Variable weather forecast makes waves

Your

Owen Roberts With rain across much of the country resulting in flooding in many regions, weather experts are also looking at long-term forecasts to the summer ahead. And farmers are hoping many predictions made in a recent national weather forecast are wrong, because if they’re right, it could be a tough growing season. The AccuWeather Global Weather forecast of

May 3 calls for everything from high temperatures and little rainfall on the western and central Prairies – extending all the way north into the Territories - to cool, rainy conditions in much of Quebec and Atlantic Canada. It’s soup to nuts, a variable mixed bag, a hot-tocold sweep from west to east. For example, the forecast includes warnings about more wildfire potential in Alberta due to very hot and dry weather. At the opposite end of the spectrum, thunderstorms and severe weather are predicted around the Great Lakes. And finally, unseasonably cool yet humid temperatures are forecast for Canada’s east coast, owing to below-normal sea-surface temperatures and a greater number of days with fog. Who’s looking good? AccuWeather says areas close to the Pacific coast are forecast to have temperatures closer to normal. And predictions call for eastern Manitoba and much of Ontario to be warm, but not hot. “Warm’s better than cool,” says Cedric MacLeod, executive director of the Canadian Forage and Grassland Association. “But we need rain to back it up. The major driver for forages is water.” MacLeod says most of the Prairies had a wet fall and went into the winter with reasonable moisture reserves. That’s good for seeding – as long a there’s not too much water. But those reserves will get used up quickly if hot, dry weather persists. And that can have long-term ramifications. For example, the 2012 drought resulted in a dramatic drop in feed production. Beef producers flooded the North America market with animals, causing shortages later and a spike in consumer prices from 2014 to 2016. Dale Cowan, senior agronomist with AGRIS and Wanstead Co-ops in southwestern Ontario, says weather forecasters have more tools than ever available to make the most accurate predictions possible. So he’s urging farmers to take forecasters’ warnings seriously and manage appropriately. For example, soils with good structure and drainage help maintain productivity during wet conditions.

Overwintered cereals for feed: what you need to know Richard Kamchen

Overwintered cereal crops can be used to feed livestock, but there are risks, a joint SaskatchewanAlberta report warns. Approximately 2.3 million acres of 2016’s crop went unharvested in both provinces combined. The report, Risks of Using Over-Wintered Crops as Livestock Feed, was co-author by Barry Yaremcio, Alberta Agriculture’s beef and forage specialist. He advises against using 100 per cent of spring harvested grains to feed chickens, pigs, sheep, cattle or other species. “Include it at roughly 20-25 per cent of the total ration and blend it off with other feeds that are better quality and better condition,” Yaremcio says. Several options exist for farmers when incorporating overwintered cereal crops: swath grazing, feeding spring threshed crop and baling. “There are uses and risks to each option,” says co-author Murray Feist, Saskatchewan Agriculture’s ruminant nutritionist, who says he doesn’t

favour one option over the others. “Each operation is different in the choices available to them.” Wintered crops become weather damaged and their protein and energy contents drop, as well as their digestibility, the report says. Digestibility could be 10 per cent lower in greenfeed or swath grazing, further reducing the suitability of unthreshed crops or spring threshed grain as a major component or sole ingredient in a ration. “Feed tests for nutrient content are very important,” Yaremcio says. “Consult with nutritionists and a veterinarian if you’re not sure, or problems start appearing.” Spring-threshed crops are at risk of contamination from ergot, fusarium, moulds, dirt and fecal matter. Microbial levels that existed in the fall will be present in the crop going into spring. Mycotoxins can be found in cereals as well as corn, and pigs, chickens and dairy cattle are most susceptible, Yaremcio notes. Weather conditions last fall heightened myco-

toxin risks, giving greater importance to screen testing spring-threshed crops for mycotoxins. “Testing for mould types and concentration provides little; you must do mycotoxin testing,” Yaremcio says. Baling for use as greenfeed next fall and winter is perhaps the most common option selected by farmers, Yaremcio says. The crop material, however, must be dry before baling. Bales containing moisture content above 16 to 18 per cent may potentially heat and lose quality and energy content, as well as develop mould. Raking or inverting overwintered crop windrows helps with the drying process to produce more uniform moisture content. “You need to use kid gloves when you try to bale up and use greenfeed for spring salvaging,” says Yaremcio.

Breakfast Brief “I hate newspapermen. They come into camp and pick up their camp rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are.” - William Tecumseh Sherman (U.S. Civil War-era soldier)

Coffee Row Rumours Grains this morning are in the green as they rebound from yesterday’s sell-off but traders and analysts are still cognizant of the political drama happening in the U.S. and Brazil (and that there may be more to come!). Outside of the geopolitical risk, the market positively took in healthy U.S. export sales from last week while concerns continued to be raised over the pace of Plant 2017 with some recent storms hitting the Midwest and Southern Plains (U.S. winter wheat crops continue to face some challenges). We heard yesterday of some very tough facts for those that did a spring crop in early in Western Canada and U.S. Northern states, but it’s important to remind yourself that one story does not equal consensus. If it was consensus, the market would’ve reacted accordingly…but it didn’t. That being said, there are some below-average temperatures expected throughout the next week or so, which the market may start to price in. Until then though, this noise is only being extensively talked about at coffee row (what percentage of coffee row rumours would you say that you believe?). Yesterday’s sell-off in soybeans was nothing short of impressive as Brazilian producers seemingly got into a selling frenzy as the Brazilian Real dropped 8% against the U.S. Dollar, hitting a 6-month low. This pushes up the domestic price of exportable goods in Brazil, meaning those Brazilian farmers who having been holding out for better price, went to the market aggressively as they saw some of the best prices in the past 3 months (or just before their harvest started). It’s already been rumoured that at least 3M tonnes of soybeans were sold by farmers yesterday. Literally about 3% of the entire Brazilian crop in 1 days. Sold. As such, soybeans lost about 2.5% while dragging down other grains with it. Next door in Argentina, the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange says that there’s still about 11.4M acres of soybeans left to harvest and about 2/3s of this is in areas that are set to get some moisture over the next few days (stalling harvest) or where rainfall has already been plentiful and yields / quality is up in the air. Strategie Grains recently dropped its estimates for wheat and barley production in 2017, citing frosts in France, Germany, and Poland and dryness in Spain, France, Belgium, & the U.K. as the main reasons for the downgrade. The E.U. soft wheat crop was cut by 1.1M tonnes to 142.7M tonnes, which also meant that European soft wheat exports were cut by 200,000 MT an even 26.2M tonnes. The larger cut was seen in the barley crop though, with Strategie dropping it by 1.7M tonnes to 59.6M tonnes, a multi-year low, but still accounting for about 40% of global production. The corn crop was downgraded by 300,000 MT to 60.1M tonnes while the European durum crop was felled by 300,000 to 8.6M tonnes. Digging regionally, the Germain Farm Co-Op Association (DRV) dropped the Germany corn crop by 744,000 MT to 3.74M tonnes, pegged the rapeseed crop at 4.7M tonnes, and 25M tonnes of wheat.

Finally, U.S. President Donald Trump officially moved to start renegotiations on the North American Free Trade Agreement, seeking to modernize things by addressing or adding new provisions for “intellectual property rights, regulatory practices, state-owned enterprises, services, customs procedures, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, labor, environment, and small and medium enterprises.” For the American, Canadian, and Mexican agricultural industries, the stakes are high. Case in point, U.S. ag exports to Mexico and Canada have gone up 5x and 3x respectively since NAFTA was implemented as the 2 countries now buy about $40B USD in agricultural goods annually. With the required 90-day consultation period with Congress/American industry officially started by the top U.S. trade negotiator, Rob Lighthizer, yesterday, the countdown is on until August 16th, 2017 when new tri-lateral talks could begin. This likely isn’t something that will be solved overnight but it’s likely to be another item to discuss at coffee row, especially as mid-August approaches.

StatsCan releases its grain stock report Statistics Canada recently released its Canadian grain stocks report, pulling from a March survey of 11,600 Canadian farms. Farmers were asked to report the amounts of grain, oilseeds and special crops in on-farm storage. Data on commercial stocks of western major crops originate from the Canadian Grain Commission. As expected, total stocks of canola, soybeans and oats were lower compared with the same date in 2016. Meanwhile, total stocks of wheat, corn and barley were up. Total wheat stocks at 16.6 million tonnes are up 15.5 per cent from 2016, and came in well below the average of trade expectations of 18.3 million tonnes. In fact, the 2017 figures is below the lowest of pre-report trade estimates. What can be inferred by this is that domestic feed use for wheat has moved along at a rapid pace. Last year, wetness resulted in a large amount of lower quality grain. This report does not change the milling wheat situation, but means Canada is chewing through off-grade wheat faster. That suggests a turning point to a firmer domestic feed grain price trend may be closer at hand. On durum, while supplies were well-above last year, market watchers expected “monster” durum stocks much higher than StatsCan’s 4.1-million-tonnes estimate. Here too, perhaps we are using up this durum faster than we thought, as lower prices drive up domestic feed usage. As of March 31, total canola stocks were down 23.3 per cent from 2016 to 6.6 million tonnes - a four-year low. The number seems to confirm market speculation that old-crop canola supplies will continue grinding down towards a fairly tight level by marketing year-end on July 31 before the new

crop harvest. However, the trade is still of the opinion that StatsCan’s current estimate of 2016 canola production at 18.4 million tonnes is too low. Nonetheless, this report indicates there is potentially a tight stocks scenario going into the end of the marketing year. Soybean stocks decreased 4.2 per cent to 1.9 million tonnes as of March 31, despite a 1.4 per cent increase in production in 2016. Onfarm stocks were down 19.6 per cent to 930,000 tonnes, mainly driven by Ontario, where they fell 33.8 per cent to 460,000 tonnes. Commercial stocks increased 18.6 per cent to 925,000 tonnes. Total barley stocks increased 22.6 per cent to 4.6 million tonnes as of March 31, following a 6.8 per cent gain in production in 2016. That’s slightly above trade expectations, though not enough to have a market impact. Implied feed barley consumption stays high, and it remains tough to dispel a 2016-2017 carryout that hovers around two million tonnes. That’s a large number, but smaller than many industry expectations. StatsCan pegged lentil stocks as of March 31 at 1.1 million tonnes, and dry peas at 1.7 million. I don’t think there is anything here that really changes the story on lentils or peas enough to affect price. In fact, demand issues outside of Canada matter more to pulse price trends matter more than Canadian supply. While pulses are not in a bull market at this time, prices have improved with an extension of a fumigation policy from India. Canada remains well-supplied on pulses, but I don’t think the numbers quoted by StatsCan will put any new pressure on the market that wasn’t

already there. Mike Jubinville of Pro Farmer Canada offers information on commodity markets and marketing strategies. Call 204-654-4290 or visit www.pfcanada.com to find out more about his services.

Good farm succession plans allow for change The following fictional case study, the first in a series from BDO Canada, provides insight into how a rock-solid retirement plan can be tested when family dynamics change. The intent is not to provide a definite correct course of action, but rather to illustrate that the process can be emotional and complex, and highlight tax and planning issues to consider. Bill and Donna had done it right. They had worked hard and built a successful mid-sized grain operation. But it was apparent early on that taking over the farm was not in the cards for their three children (two daughters and a son). The interest wasn’t there, and the kids had moved away from the farm after university to build their lives. With the next generation out of the picture, Bill and Donna started thinking about a wind-down plan in their early 50s. Both enjoyed good health and were still enjoying actively farming. The plan was to retire at 60 and live in a small house newly built on a lot severed from one of the properties. For tax reasons, the farm was set up as a corporation and all the equipment was owned by B&D Farms Inc. When the time came, the plan was to have an auction and disperse the equipment. All owned farmland was held outside the corporation to maximize capital gains exemptions. Bill and Donna planned to sell one property upon retirement to provide a comfortable nest egg. They were in no hurry to sell the rest of the land, and planned to use land rental income to supplement their investment and savings. A comprehensive will established how the estate would be executed. The land would pass to the three children – who were made aware of the plan – and all were comfortable with the way the plan was laid out. Life was good. Then their son Brandon and his new wife Amy, at Thanksgiving dinner at the farm, announced they wanted to come back to run the farm and raise a family. There was talk of converting the farm to organic and even starting a bed and breakfast. With their retirement date only a few years away, Bill and Donna felt like the rug had been pulled out from under them. Brandon’s sisters Kate and Diane were not impressed with Brandon’s about-face, and felt Amy’s urban background didn’t provide a realistic perspective on running a farm business. Fireworks ensued. Brandon’s new-found interest in farming meant major changes to Bill and Donna’s retirement plans. Bill and Donna held a family meeting, and it was agreed that Brandon would have the opportunity to slowly integrate into the existing operation. The biggest challenge facing both families was how to make an operation that had supported only one family now support two. Aging equipment would need to be replaced, and there was still the matter of where Brandon and Amy would live. The severance of the lot and construction of the new retirement house would have to happen years sooner than planned. Bill and Donna also updated their wills so Brandon would receive the shares of B&D Farms Inc. and their daughters would receive the new house. Things don’t always go according to plan. People, situations and expectations can change – sometimes quickly. A succession plan is rarely written in stone. It’s more often an undertaking.

What’s influencing Canadian farm numbers in 2016?

Between 1996 and 2011, the number of farms declined at the national level by about 10% in each 5-year Census period. But this overall rate of decline hides some important details. Between 2006 and 2011, the number of farms declined in all size categories at the national level, except for the largest farms (> 3,520 acres) which grew 10.1%. Small (less than 10 acres) only declined 1.3%. And in certain provinces, their smallest and largest farms increased in number. In this post, I discuss some of the different factors that have clearly influenced the rate of change in Canadian farm numbers: farms consolidating to take advantage of economies of scale; and the emergence of smaller farms responding to consumer demand for specialty products and fresh produce.

The historical decline in the number of farms illustrates the presence of economies of scale in agriculture and competitive pressures in the farm sector. Between 2006 and 2011, Canada’s mid-sized farms (560 - 2,240 acres) experienced the largest decline in farm numbers. Economies of scale are defined as the ability to lower the average cost of production by expanding production. For example, a farm can spread fixed costs over more units of production, resulting in important economies. A farm can also be more efficient as it grows bigger – so economies of scale aren’t simply related to fixed costs. This is important in sectors with tight margins. Two factors producing farm consolidation: Increasing competitive pressures for more acres. Value within an operation can be generated through production efficiencies and the resulting lower costs which are partly a function of size. This is certainly true for grain and oilseed operations producing a standardized commodity. Technological advancements in equipment. Larger, more efficient equipment covers more acres. Typically, the adoption of new technology decreases the per acre costs of production – especially (but not strictly) when the number of acres also increase. Value-added ag helps boost number of small Canadian farms Increasingly sophisticated urban food preferences have created an opportunity for some farms to focus on supplying value-added products across the supply chain. Food preferences evolve for many reasons, including demographic changes, (an aging Canadian population, immigration, etc.), the desire to know where food comes from, an emphasis on health and wellness and a need for convenience. More and varied food preferences make it possible for smaller operations to be profitable serving niche markets. In specialized supply chains, the objective is to meet buyers’ unique needs with an eye to controlling production costs. But in these cases, the scale of production that drives the business decisions of

There was a trend for the number of small farms (less than 10 acres) to increase between 2006 and 2011. This is a trend recorded in several provinces, including British Columbia and Quebec. In B.C., the roughly 12,000 farms of less than 10 acres in 2006 grew to almost 13,000 farms in 2011. And Nova Scotia’s total number of farms increased from 3,795 to 3,905 farms – with a 27.3% increase in the number of farms under 10 acres. There were also more Nova Scotia farms between 10 and 129 acres in 2011 than there were in 2006. Economies of scale help explain the consolidation trend for Canadian farms, a trend that has produced fewer mid-sized farms and more of the largest farms. We expect the 2016 Census of Agri-

culture to show this trend has continued, perhaps at the same pace as the last twenty years. Farms between 1,100 and 2,500 acres are likely to see the largest decline, as competitive pressures and changes in technology force these farms to expand or merge with other existing operations. The development of different food preferences and proximity of larger populations with more diverse food interests have also shaped the Canadian farm landscape. Together, they’ve produced more farms that are small and niche. But economies of scale will apply here as well, even if to a lesser extent. The 2016 Census might show a larger decline in the number of the smallest farms (those with less than 10 acres) and potentially an increase in the number of farms between 10 and 69 acres. The very small farms will be able to expand their acreage in response to continued growth in market evolution.

Volunteer crops may challenge prairie farmers Richard Kamchen

Millions of acres of unharvested 2016 crops could cause some challenges for Prairie farmers this spring in the form of volunteer crops. “High densities of volunteer crops are just as

competitive and detrimental to yield as high densities of wild, weedy species,” says Clark Brenzil, Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weed control specialist. About 1.3 million Saskatchewan acres were left

unharvested last fall, and he predicts higher densities of volunteer crops in 2017 as a result. “The combination of weathering of the seed bearing structures and a full six months of being beaten around by wind will likely have resulted in some additional shattering through the winter.” James Wright, a risk analyst with Alberta’s Agriculture Financial Services Corporation estimates 1.2 to 1.4 million acres weren’t harvested in his province, but adds recent cool weather may stymie volunteers somewhat. “If it had been much warmer, we could have had a fair amount of shatter that started growing, but that could start-up the last couple of weeks made that a lot less of an issue,” Wright says. Manitoba’s 2016 harvest was far less problematic by comparison with only about 100,000 acres unharvested. Severity The amount of volunteer seeds will partly depend on whether crops were lying in swaths or standing, Brenzil notes. Actions How farmers manage unharvested crops this spring also will have a bearing on volunteer density. “If a standing crop is mowed rather than combined, the densities of volunteers are likely to be extremely high as all of the seed is being returned to the soil,” Brenzil says. Crop burning could reduce the number of viable seeds returning to the soil – particularly in swathed fields – while combining will remove most of the seeds from the field.

Trail walk to improve your horsemanship

I’m fortunate here because I have miles of trails; wide ones, nar-

row ones, ravines, and gentle and steep hills to go play on. When we are out on the trails, we ask them to walk up and down hills at the speed of the person, stop on the hill if needed, and even back up and down the hills. We will also back them down crooked trails even when there are up and down hills. In the corral we practice sending them over poles and logs, so out on the trail we send them jumping over windfall. The goal is to really check them out and to expose them to the bush and trails so they can become relaxed and thinking. The person gets to see that their horse is very capable being lead quietly up a steep hill and doesn’t need to run or lunge and that they can stop or walk slowly going down. We also have water holes that we send them through and a few man-made scary for horse obstacles to use as well. This tests the horse’s ability to navigate the trails and find out that it is easy to do and nothing that they need to get emotional about. At the same time, the humans get to work on the same thing. It is very common to see people get very worked up even when they are leading their horse through the trails. If they were

on the horse, the horse would really feel the anxiousness of the rider and if the horse weren’t anxious before he probably would be now. All you need to have is some bush and preferably some hills, then head out with your horse and have a play. It is also fantastic for older “broke” horses. It’s surprising how many horses that have been ridden for years that won’t back up or down a hill or between two trees. Heading for the bush to play after you can do all the 7 patterns with your horse is a great experience. I

It seems like not too many people have heard of trail walks with their horse, but we like to do it here at the Horse Ranch often throughout the camps in the summer. It is a very enjoyable way to develop a horse. It gives the horse and the person a chance to get out of the corral and test some of the stuff they have been working on in the corral. Basically, a trail walk is taking your horse online out on the trails and asking them to do some of the things you might want them to be able to do if you were riding them. It is a great way to see what their behavior is going to be like without being on their backs. We have had people and horses here that compete in horse shows of different sorts but can’t actually leave the confinement of the corral. They don’t have enough control or depth in their horse to ride in a field or down a trail. Yes, believe it or not. Sometimes it’s only the person that is worried and the horse would be fine if their owner would relax. So, one way of bridging the gap, whether it is a horse or human problem, is to do a trail walk.

How to keep animals happy, healthy in the heat by Rose Tubman RVT As summer arrives and the weather warms up, it’s time for us to start thinking about how to keep our animals healthy and happy in the heat. For both large and small animals, the benefits and joys of summer – increased temperatures, long hours of sunshine, minimal rainfall – can also be a potential source of illness and injury. It’s important to be prepared and aware of possible hazards so that you can spend your season splashing, sunning, and generally enjoying life rather than worrying about your animals! Increased temperatures are the biggest source of problems during summer. Most people are aware of the dangers of leaving a pet locked in a vehicle, but did you know that if the outside temperature is 23°C, the inside temperature of the car will reach 37°C in just ten minutes? That’s more than enough for a dog to develop heatstroke or potentially pass away. Even leaving the windows cracked or parking in the shade won’t help. The best thing to do is leave your pups at home – the fun of the car ride

isn’t worth the potential brain damage. The high temperature hazards aren’t limited to the inside of a car, either. In the summer, asphalt and concrete heats up rapidly and holds onto that heat, leading to burnt paws. If it’s too hot for you to hold your palm on the road for more than thirty seconds, it’s too hot for your animals! Try using booties to protect sensitive pads or simply walk your pet in the morning before the road heats up, or in the evenings as it begins to cool down. This will also benefit animals who are more susceptible to heat exhaustion, such as animals which are older, unfit, have a heavy coat, have heart or lung disease, or any of the bracycephalic (short-faced) breeds such as bulldogs, pugs, Shih Tzus, and French bulldogs. These dogs have a much harder time controlling their body temperature and can easily develop heatstroke. If your dog has been in the sun and is now showing symptoms such as heavy panting, restlessness, thick ropy saliva, dark tongue and gums, vomiting, and/or diarrhea, get them somewhere cool and call your veterinarian for advice. If your pet is in distress and having difficulty breath-

ing, get them to the vet immediately! Long days and short nights means plenty of sunshine, and unfortunately also plenty of sunburn. Gray horses or those with large white markings and pale skin are particularly prone to sunburn, and just like us, these burns cause discomfort at best and serious skin damage at worst. If your horse has visible pinkness showing through their white coat or white markings, it’s a good idea to make sure that area is covered somehow. Equine sunscreen can be used for small markings such as snips, while UV-protective fly masks and flysheets might be a better option for animals with large white markings and lots of pink skin. Minimal rainfall is great for camping and bonfires, but it can deplete natural water sources. Ensure that cattle and horses always have access to plenty of fresh water and check frequently that it is not being drained, as the heat will cause them to drink more than usual. Dehydration is a serious problem which can lead to death if not corrected, and will prevent weight gain and cause poor health even when it is not severe. If natural water sources are drying up, water may need to be brought in or animals may need to be moved. This goes for small animals too; ensure dogs and cats which spend their time outdoors have access to clean, fresh water and refill it frequently to prevent dehydration, particularly in animals with urinary or kidney problems already. We wish you and your animals a safe, happy summer filled with sunshine and fun!

Soybean fun: only May, late planting is a month away Horst Bohner estimates there are only several hundred acres of soybeans planted in Ontario and he’s OK with that. As rain continues to saturate soils across the province, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs soybean specialist is reminding growers that it’s early for planting soybeans. In this episode of RealAgriculture’s Soybean School, Bohner says there’s still plenty of time to plant the crop before surrendering significant yield.

“If you think about long-term planting date studies, there’s no doubt that we prefer early planting,” says Bohner. “But by early, we mean May 10, and we’re not even there yet.” In what is turning into a challenging spring across the province, Bohner says growers are not losing anything by leaving the seed in the bag until planting conditions improve. “That cold, wet soil is going to produce a lot of soil-borne disease in those early seedlings so we haven’t missed anything… and the long-term data would show that you don’t lose significant data until you get past May 20.”

Bohner adds that he still considers the entire month of May as the normal planting window for soybeans. “We’ve pushed to earlier planting because we see some advantages, but what I’m suggesting is that during the month of May, there really aren’t any changes that we should consider.” That means the same management, varieties and populations, he adds. For Bohner, late planting in the province begins when the calendar flips over to June. Only then do management considerations start to change.

into a single thick patty.

Here is it: the juiciest hamburgers ever INGREDIENTS (9) 4 slices American cheese (about 3 ounces) 1 1/2 pounds ground chuck (15 to 20 percent fat content), chilled 1 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Vegetable oil, for oiling the grill 4 (4-inch) hamburger buns, split and toasted Sliced pickles, for serving Cut each slice of cheese in half, then in half again to form 4 squares. Stack the pieces on top of each other to form 4 stacks; set aside.

2Place the meat in a large bowl and add the salt, garlic powder, Worcestershire, and pepper. Mix with your hands until just evenly combined. 3Divide the meat into 8 equal portions and place on a work surface. Using your fingertips, press 2 portions of the meat into 2 rough 1/4-inch-thick patties that are each about 1 inch wider in diameter than the hamburger buns.

Transfer to a plate. Repeat with the remaining portions of meat and cheese to form 4 patties in total. Refrigerate while you prepare the grill. 4Heat a grill pan or outdoor grill to medium high (about 375°F to 425°F). When the grill is ready, use tongs to rub the grate with several layers of paper towels dipped in vegetable oil. 5Place the reserved patties on the grill, close the grill, and cook undisturbed (do not press down on the patties) until dark grill marks appear on the bottom, about 3 to 4 minutes. Using a spatula, flip the patties, close the grill again, and cook until grill marks appear on the second side and the patties are cooked through, about 3 to 4 minutes more. Remove to a clean plate and let rest in a warm place or tent loosely with foil for 5 minutes. Place a patty on each bun bottom, top with pickles, and cover with a bun top. Serve immediately.

Place 1 stack of cheese in the center of 1 of the patties. Place 1 stack of cheese in the center of 1 of the patties. Cup each patty with your hands to round out the edges, and press on the top to flatten slightly

Grilled Texas T-Bone steaks with charred O-rings INGREDIENTS 2 cups mesquite or hickory chips 4 garlic cloves, coarsely chopped Kosher salt Four 1-pound T-bone steaks, about 1 1/4 inches thick 2 tablespoons ancho chile powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 2 tablespoons Tabasco sauce

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 2 large sweet onions, such as Vidalia or Walla Walla, each cut crosswise into four 1-inch slices 2 tablespoons pure olive oil Vegetable oil, for the grill Lime wedges, for serving HOW TO MAKE THIS RECIPE Soak the mesquite chips in water for 30 minutes and drain. On a cutting board, sprinkle the garlic

with a pinch of kosher salt and crush with the side of a knife until a smooth paste forms. Lay the steaks in a large, shallow baking dish. Rub both sides of the steaks with the garlic paste. In a small bowl, combine the chile powder with 2 teaspoons of salt, the cumin, oregano and pepper. Sprinkle half of the rub on both sides of the steaks. In another small bowl, combine the Tabasco with the Worcestershire sauce and spoon over the steaks; then pat the liquid into the spice rub so it forms a paste. Refrigerate the steaks for 30 minutes or for up to 4 hours. Light a grill. Thread the onion slices onto skewers and brush with the olive oil, then sprinkle both sides with the remaining spice rub. If using charcoal, scatter the wood chips over the coals. If using a gas grill, place the chips in the smoker box or on a 12-inch square of foil; fold the foil into a 6-inch square and poke 12 holes in the top. Place the package near the flames and heat until smoking. Lightly brush the grate with vegetable oil. Set the steaks on the grill and cook over a medium-hot fire for 4 to 6 minutes per side for medium rare. Grill the onion slices until tender and nicely charred, 6 minutes per side. Transfer the steaks to plates and serve with the onion rings and lime wedges. SUGGESTED PAIRING An inexpensive, juicy Shiraz or Zinfandel with bright berry and spice flavors, not too much oak and low alcohol will stand up to the spicy, smoky flavors of the steak.

“Once you have decided what tree and shrub species you would like to plant and have done proper planning, design and site preparation, it is time to start planting,” says Toso Bozic, bioenergy/agroforestry specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Edmonton. “The best time to plant trees or shrubs is early morning, late afternoon or during a cloudy day. Don’t plant trees during the hot noon or afternoon as they will dry up very quickly.” There are two common methods of planting - manual and mechanical. Each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages. “For hand planting, don’t pull the tree out until you have made a hole,” said Bozic. “Create the hole large enough to keep roots straight. Trees should be planted in the same depth as they were planted in the nursery. You may notice changes in colour of the seedlings’ bark close to roots. You will see the soil line which is the depth that you need to plant the trees. Once you have put the tree properly in the hole, put soil around it and step on the soil to make it firm. The easiest way to test is try to gently to pull the trees out - if they come out easily, you have not used enough soil and pressure. Keep seedlings as straight as possible.” For mechanical planting have the soil prepared prior to planting, says Bozic.

“Regulate the speed of planting by adjusting the speed of the tractor and planter to the time needed for proper planting and spacing. You will need to have somebody go after the tree is planted to make the soil firm around

the trees and ensure that the trees are properly planted.” Once planting is complete, the trees will need to be watered. “Watering can be done with drip irrigation or leaving a small bucket with holes next to the trees. Don’t water too quickly as water will run off and nothing will get to the roots, or it will create surface roots for trees that may die during a drought. The goal is to create trees and shrubs with deep roots that can withstand drought. Check soil moisture regularly by putting a sharp object such as a knife into the soil. Do not water if there is some soil on the knife. If the knife comes out dry, you may water.’ Once the trees are successfully planted, they will still need some attention to protect them from weeds, diseases, animals and insects. “Weed control is an ongoing process the first few years following planting. There are several methods of weed control including mechanical weed control, herbicides and using various mulches. In any case, without proper weed control, the chance of the trees dying increases. It may require up to five years of controlling weeds until the tree can stand itself. It’s also crucial in the first few years to monitor your trees once a week for any potential damages for insects, diseases and animals.” Planting trees is a fun activity but also very hard work, adds Bozic. “Involve friends and family members in planting and look forward to a beautiful reward for your hard work in your yard or future forest.”

The Savanna Lighthouse Assembly The Savanna Lighthouse began as a series on circumstances. In March of 1976, several families attended a Max Solbrecken meeting in Dawson Creek, resulting in several becoming born again Christians. A year later a reverend out of Grande Prairie conducted a funeral of Benny Dyck, who was killed in a tragic accident. With this, contact teams were set out forth from the GP Evangel Assembly and services were

held in the Silver Valley Hall, Savanna Rec Plex and people’s homes. In June of 1979, pastor Brian Moffat and family took up residence in the school. An assembly was formed and was called the Savanna Lighthouse Assembly. Ten acres of land was purchased and in October of 1980 sod was turned and building began of a new church. The official opening was in March of 1982 with MLA Grant Notely and district superintendent Ivor Rossett in attendance.

The first year of a pup’s life is often taken for granted sponsibilities need to be relative to age and experience. A mentally mature dog is a pleasure to train.

The first year of a pups life is often taken for granted. This is an impressionable age and we often miss learning opportunities that are invaluable. He is not officially ready to “go to work” so it may be assumed that nothing needs to be done with him. This is not so. The more he leams at this age the sooner he will become a competent working dog. A pup is like a sponge and soaks up everything new at a remarkable rate. Some things a pup should be teaming are: manners, such as not jumping on people, staying in a specified place in the house such as a boot room, laying down and staying where asked, coming when called, jumping in and out of vehicles, quads, tractors etc., laying down and waiting while barn stalls are being cleaned and staying outside the fence while you water livestock. This is just to name a few places and ideas for helping build obedience in the dog. A pup that is left loose to roam the yard will often develop an inquisitive and curious nature. He fills his days exploring, touching and chewing. As he gets himself into new situations he learns how to get out of them. He teams to use his brain to think and not just go through motions because someone tells him to. An example of this is always going through the barn door. One day dan’t let the pup in, you go through to the other side of the barn and then call him. See if he will search until he finds his way around the corrals or pens until he gets to you on the other side. Little exercises like this teach them to problem solve on their own. The more a brain learns the more it is capable of teaming because it gets trained to absorb information. Mental growth also comes from having responsibilies. These re-

Here’s the scoop on Pulse markets recalibrating Canadian pulse seedings this spring could end up being higher than initially projected by Statistics Canada. The agency pegged lentil seedings at a relatively low 4.39 million acres, well down from last year’s record 5.86 million and an average trade guess at closer to five million acres. StatsCan also put Canadian field pea acres at 3.99 million, a six per cent drop from 4.24 million last year. The StatsCan acreage survey was conducted in March when the pulse industry was still under threat of losing access to the Indian marketplace over a non-tariff fumigation-related trade barrier. There was a cloud over the pulse sector during that time. But some of that uncertainty has lightened since then. Now, as farmers take to the field to plant the 2017 crop, there is hope that a more permanent arrangement for Canadian pulse exports to India is at hand. The Saskatchewan Pulse Growers say the Indian government recently posted draft amendments to its Plant Quarantine Order regarding import requirements for several products, including pulses from Canada. SPG says the document suggest current concerns may be resolved through India’s recognition and acceptance of Canada’s approach for dealing with phytosanitary concerns in Canadian pulse crops imported into India. There are still some potential limitations to trade outlined in the draft document, including a continued fumigation requirement. However, SPG says it’s “encouraged by the positive steps towards the resolution.” Cash bids for pulses such as red lentils and yellow peas have bounced back a bit since SPG posted its update, resulting in a sigh of relief in the trade and probably inspiring some confidence in growers to boost acres a bit more than StatsCan forecasts - unless spring weather issues force last minute changes. Lentils Large green lentils buyers are slowly starting to show interest in locking up new crop acres, with fall delivered prices sitting at 38 cents for No. 1 grade, 36 cents for No. 2, and 34 cents for No. 3 grade. Red lentil bids range from about 24 to 26 cents per pound - not great but it still compare well with their five and 10 year averages. Even if StatsCan area ends up higher than stated in its April 21 report, we cannot assign a lentil production number higher than 2.75 million tonnes today. This would mean about 1.8 million tonnes of reds (2.5 million tonnes last year), 650,000 tonnes of large greens (500,000 tonnes last year) and 300,000 tonnes of small greens (215,000 last year). Export interest would be poised to expand because importers need competitively priced quality greens early and due to ongoing demand in reds. Price prospects for next year should at least give an opportunity for a rising red price at some point in 2017 and 2018. Peas Yellow pea prices have strengthened. Line company old crop bids are back up to around $9 a bushel. Canada’s pea story is not told by a Canadian pea supply/demand balance sheet, rather is told by the fact that Canada’s huge 2016 crop was disposed due to ongoing interest from India affordable as a pulse choice versus expensive chana), China demand (starch), and domestic use (protein fracking and pet food). With desi and chickpea prices poised to be strong throughout this calendar year, buying interest from India should continue despite the trade policy uncertainties. Meanwhile, the Chinese and our domestic use story are only expanding. While trade issues make India a risk, we do not think Canada will be in a position to overproduce relative to still strong demand. I suspect yellow peas remains a good 2017 crop choice - assuming weather and agronomics cooperate. Canadian ag is getting bigger and better with age, says the Census of Agriculture Martha Roberts Economic Research Specialist The 2016 Census of Agriculture was released today, providing an updated snapshot of the sector. The last 20 years have shown Canadian farms declining by a steady 10% in each Census period. That stability was upended this year, when the total number of farms declined by 6.0%, a pace cut almost in half from each of the previous four periods. A move to more cropland As I pointed out last week, the

face of Canadian farms is changing. The efforts to find efficiencies have meant farms are getting larger in the Prairies, especially in Saskatchewan, where the number of farms continued to decline in 2016, but the average farm increased 7.0% in size. The total number of Canadian farms in grains and oilseeds increased between 2011 and 2016 (from 30.0% in 2011 to 32.9% in 2016). They increased in most provinces except, most notably, in Saskatchewan, where they declined. But Quebec’s 17.1% increase (from 3,849 to 4,506 G&O farms) and Alberta’s 6.0% increase (from 12,692 to 13,451 G&O farms) helped spur a

The farming population is, very slowly, aging. In 2011, the average age of a Canadian farmer was 54; in 2016, it was 55. And the number of young producers (operators under 35 years) increased everywhere except New-

Canola continues as the largest Canadian crop; the area devoted to soybeans (Manitoba) and pulses (Saskatchewan) both dramatically increased. The number of cattle and dairy operations declined as the number of other livestock farms (pig and poultry) increased. Canada’s dairy sector produced more with less between 2011 and 2016: milk production grew 8.7% with gains in productivity and despite fewer cows. Who are Canada’s producers?

nationwide move to more area devoted to field crops. Increasing from a total of 69.7 million acres in 2011 to 78.5 million acres in 2016, the gain in field crop area was still most pronounced in the three prairie provinces. Some of that was due to area recovered from flooding as reported in 2011 and converted acres from hay and pasture to cropland.

foundland and Quebec. While they made up 8.2% of the total farm population in 2011, these youngest producers now make up 9.1% of Canadian producers. In Manitoba, young farmers comprised 10.8% of the province’s agriculture, up from 8.8% in 2011. The number of farms headed by males and females both shrank, but farms with one female operator were the only farms to increase in number between 2011 and 2016 (from 10,740 to 13,110 – or a 22.1% increase). Rented acres increase There’s now less owned land being farmed, falling from 64.6% in 2011 to 62.8% in 2016 – a decrease of 3.8 million acres. The number of overall acres rented or leased grew 8.8% between 2011 and 2016. Rented acres showed the greatest increase in Saskatchewan (from 14.7 to 17 million acres, or a 15.8% increase) and B.C., where an 11.7% increase – or almost 100,000 more acres – were reported as rented in 2016. Alberta saw close to an additional million rented acres in the same period, an 8.9% increase.
