Investing in Northern Alberta - facility upgrades The federal and provincial governments are providing up to $1.3 million in grants through Growing Forward 2 to help northern Alberta food processors upgrade equipment, expand capacity and improve efficiency to meet a growing demand for high-quality, valueadded products. These investments reflect the governments’ commitment to support jobs in food processing and to help value-added businesses pursue economic opportunities and respond to consumer demand. ADM Agri-Industries is one of four Northern Alberta food processors growing their businesses with the help of government investment. The Lloydminster business, which produces renewable products for food, animal feed, and chemical and energy use, received $546,000 through Growing Forward 2 towards costs of an equipment upgrade to improve capacity and increase efficiency. Additional Northern Alberta agri-food processors benefiting from Growing Forward 2 grants include: GFR Ingredients – to purchase equipment for the production of high-protein hemp powder products. Bunge Canada Holdings Inc. –approximately $280,000 to help upgrade its oilseed processing facility in Fort Saskatchewan. Champion Petfoods LP – $288,990 for equipment and systems to increase productivity and reduce energy consumption. “Agri-food and beverage processing companies play an important role in the Canadian economy. Through these investments, we are creating opportunities for Alberta’s agri-food sector to grow and prosper, and create good jobs to strengthen the middle class.”
- Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada “The growth and expansion of Alberta’s food processing sector benefits farmers and agri-businesses across the province and builds on our international reputation as a centre for high
quality food products. Our support to the sector supports it to expand its capacity and increase efficiency. “ - Oneil Carlier, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry “The Growing Forward 2 grants have helped fund investments in Lloydminster
that provide an easy, accessible way for local farmers to access global markets for canola.” - Tim Cassidy, commercial manager, ADM Agri-Industries Ltd. “Bunge has a strong footprint in Canada. Thanks to the new equipment purchased
I M P O R T A N T Canadian Grain Commission
through the Growing Forward 2 program, we made that footprint even stronger by improving the quality and efficiency of one of our plants.” The Growing Forward 2 initiative is a federal-provincialterritorial partnership that provides programs and services to
drive an innovative, competitive and profitable Canadian agriculture and agri-foods sector. By the end of the Growing Forward 2 initiative in March 2018, it is expected that more than $406 million will have been invested in strategic programs for Alberta’s agricultural sector.

DIGGING INTO THE USDA’S AUGUST WASDE NUMBERS Whoooooooshhhh. That was the sound heard yesterday as fund money’s air was let out of the grains markets. A selloff occurred moments after noon eastern time with the release of the USDA’s August World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates. As Garrett mentioned in Grain Markets Today, corn prices and soybeans prices all ticked higher ahead of the report. And then the USDA washed away all those bullish dreams. We covered some of the reactions on Twitter. Everyone thinks that USDA analysts are nuts. While we mentioned on Wednesday that the market was expecting US corn yields of around 166 bushels per acre and soybean yields around 47.5 bu/ac, the USDA told us a different story. The USDA pegged US corn yields at 169.5 bu/ac, and American soybean yields were raised by 1.4 bushels per acre to 49.4. According to the USDA, not only does rain make grain, but so does super-hot temperatures. I, like practically 99% of the market, think that the USDA’s corn yields will be revised lower in September. There are people still sticking to their 160 bushel-per-acre estimates. With soybeans, I’m not so sure. Given some decent growing conditions, a final US yield with a 48 in front of it would not surprise me in the January 2018 WASDE report. Tighter Canola Trade? EU rapeseed production is forecasted at 22 million tonnes, meaning they’ll have to import less in 2017/18. That being said, EU rapeseed imports for 2016/17 were revised higher by 380,000 MT 4.8 million tonnes. The USDA also says that the bigger crop in the EU also offsets output reductions in the US and Canada. In the Great White North specifically, Canadian canola production was dropped by 500,000 MT to 20.5 million tonnes. That’s above almost every other estimate I’ve seen, including my own (sitting around 19.75 million tonnes). The USDA is forecasting average Canadian canola yields at 36.6 bushels per acre. This, despite admitting below-average soil moisture conditions across Western Canada and higher temperatures in Saskatchewan and Alberta. We’ll see in 3 weeks on Thursday, August 31st how StatsCan feels about this number when they release their production estimates (albeit, they’re based on July surveys). From a demand perspective, the USDA raised 2017/18 Canadian canola exports by 200,000 MT to 11.2 million tonnes in their July estimates. However, this month, that 200,000 MT was erased, and the number was moved back to 11 million tonnes. What’s Up Russia? That’s my question. They’ve got something going on in the soil over there because the USDA just increased wheat production by 5.5 million tonnes from their July forecast to 77.5 MMT. This is 5 million tonnes above last year’s record. The USDA says the reason for the increase was two-fold. First, higher yields were seen in the winter wheat areas. Second, satellite imagery in spring wheat-growing areas of Russia shows some pretty deluxe conditions. Overall, total average wheat yields in Russia are pegged at 43 bushels per acre. That’s up 10% from last month’s estimate, 8% higher than last year’s record, and 25% above the 5-year average. Ukrainian wheat production was also increased, up 2.5 million tonnes from July’s estimate to 26.5 million tonnes. The market was instead expecting a downgrade. Yes, hot weather hit part of the country that produces about 40% of the crop. Apparently, the other areas made up for it though.
Thursday Rodeo action in Dawson Creek. BROWN
The USDA pegged average nationwide wheat yields at nearly 60 bushels per acre! With 92% of the Ukrainian wheat harvest done, put a fork in this number because it’s done (READ: not being revised). Meanwhile, Canadian wheat production was dropped by nearly 2 MMT from July’s estimate to 26.5 million tonnes. Average yields are forecasted at 43.7 bushels per acre. That’s down 7% from July’s forecast and 18% lower than last year’s yields. Australian production was kept at 23.5 million tonnes despite private firm downgrades to 22 MMT and lower. In the U.S., spring wheat production estimates were lowered by 21 million to 364 million bushels (or 9.91 million tonnes). US durum output was also lowered by 6 million bushels to a 51-million-bushel crop (or 1.388 million tonnes). Overall, global wheat production is forecasted by the USDA at 743.2 million tonnes, more than 5 million tonnes higher than July’s forecast. You can blame the Black Sea mainly for this increase. This is also more than 11 million tonnes lower than last year’s record of 755 MMT. With the bigger production, global wheat carryout was raised by more than 4 million tonnes to a record of 264.7 MMT. That number will surely keep a lid on wheat prices. USDA August WASDE Takeaways? Remember, yesterday’s numbers are not final. Next week, on Monday, I’ll dig into some other numbers, but overall, the cards have been dealt by the USDA. How everyone at the table (read everyone in the market including farmers, grain buyers, and speculators) plays their hand is up in the air. Considering that production numbers are very much up in the air, my guess is that we’ll see farmers dig in and wait for higher prices to come back. Still, we have to be wary of harvest grain price pressures. Have a great weekend.

All prices are in Canadian dollars per metric tonne Market Comments - Prices on all major feed ingredients with the exception of soybean and canola meal remained unchanged across the Prairies over the past two weeks. Protein meal prices decreased by $5-10/T based mainly on the rising value of the Canadian dollar. Corn DDGS pricing likewise remained stable. Faba bean and feed peas supplies are becoming more scarce and prices across the Prairies have increased accordingly by $10-20/T. AB: $321 SK: $293 MB: $261 *Models have been updated to reflect the latest nutrient compositions of feed ingredients, which is done periodically. Feed Pea / Faba Bean Benchmark - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are intended to be used as a pricing reference. This benchmark provides a consistent and unbiased estimate of the feeding value of peas and low tannin faba beans in the three regions shown. Feed peas and faba beans will trade at various differentials to the benchmark based on local supply/demand, quality differences and other contract terms.
CALL FOR PRICING
Feed Pea / Faba Bean Feed Benchmark Calculation - The feed pea/faba bean feed benchmarks are an estimate of the feeding value of dry peas/low tannin faba beans in Western Canada, based on the value of competing feed ingredients in swine rations. Bi-weekly, tradable prices for the major feed ingredients are collected for the three regions shown above. These prices are then entered into a least cost feed formulation that is typical for grower-finisher swine in Western Canada. A feeding value is then derived for feed peas/ faba beans based on their nutritional characteristics and the prices of the competing feed ingredients. The least cost feed formulation was developed in consultation with the Prairie Swine Centre. In addition to the feed ingredients shown above, the feed formulation also includes canola oil, synthetic lysine, synthetic methionine, synthetic threonine, synthetic tryptophan, mono-dicalcium phosphate, limestone, salt, vitamins and minerals. Avoid farm work-related fatigue this summer The nature of much of today’s precision farm work requires a high degree of alertness and the ability to react quickly in certain circumstances. With extended hours of summer daylight in Alberta, farmers often stretch themselves to get the maximum out of a day’s work. Farm workers pushing their capabilities to the limits in order to
increase production run the risk of serious injury due to fatigue, and fatigue is a major factor in causing farm-related injuries.
health and safety is a worker’s most valuable asset - nothing should come before.”
“Too many farmers push themselves, especially during the really busy times and long daylight hours,” says Blair Takahashi, farm safety specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Personal
Fatigue is a mental or physical exhaustion that prevents a person from functioning normally and can often times impair safe work performance. In addition to feeling sleepy and tired, some common symptoms of fatigue include: headaches, dizziness, blurry vision slow reflexes and reactions poor concentration and judgement feeling irritable, moody and short tempered aching, weak muscles and impaired coordination “We typically see safety as being all about equipment and guards,” says Takahashi. “However, the most important safety tool a person can have is their attitude and subsequent decisions. That could mean taking a 15 minute break and stretch to refocus, have a drink of water, and a quick bite to eat.” It’s important for farmers to recognize things they can do to ward off fatigue: Get adequate sleep. This means parking your worries at the bedroom door and regularly getting a good night’s rest.

Eat nourishing food to keep your mind and body sharp. Stay hydrated with plenty of water. Incorporate some healthy activity in your day’s work. If you find yourself doing one continuous job for hours on end be sure to stop periodically and go for a walk to stretch out your muscles. Plan for physical and mental demands. This may mean adding workers to your team to alleviate the demands of spring farm work, keeping a promise to yourself that you will take a well-deserved break after a set amount of time and not making critical decisions while you are weary. “Whether you operate a family farm, employ workers or are helping neighbours, pre-planning will go a long way to preventing unforeseen injuries and costly repairs,” says Takahashi. “Although the human factor is a significant cause of farm-related hazards your safety is about the choices you make. It just takes a moment to make a decision that could literally be the difference between life and death.” For more information on farm safety best practices, go to www. agriculture.alberta.ca/farmsafety. Rash decisions: under the skin with equine dermatology Dermatology, or the study of the skin, may sound like an incredibly boring subject. However, the health of the skin is very important to the overall health of any animal. Skin forms the largest endocrine organ of the body and, like every other organ, poor skin health often impacts health and quality of life with horses being no exception to this rule! For a veterinarian, getting a thorough history of the duration, onset, progression, and symptoms may narrow a list of hundreds of possible causes to a handful of possibilities. Therefore, keeping close track of any skin issue is very important. Seeking veterinary help soon after noticing an issue will generally hasten the treatment and improve the outcome. It is important to inspect your horse’s skin and coat regularly to determine if there are any problems to report, and keep track of any changes from normal. Dermatology can be frustrating for both owners and veterinarians. Many skin diseases or disorders can appear identical, but have completely different causes and treatments. Fortunately, there are lots of different testing options to get to the bottom of skin problems. During a dermatological exam, your veterinarian will collect a history from you and then examine your horse’s entire body. They will then make recommendations for testing to help confirm their diagnosis. Common testing includes collecting samples of the skin and hair with tape, a skin scraping, impression

smears, or fine needle aspirates. The samples that are collected are typically viewed under a microscope to help figure out the cause of the problem. Sometimes skin cultures, biopsies, and bloodwork may be recommended as well. A specialist can also perform intradermal skin testing; the same kind of allergy tests used in people. Sometimes, samples are sent to trained professionals (histologists) who interpret cellular samples for a living and can provide a firm diagnosis. Skin infections are commonly seen in horses, caused by bacteria, fungus, parasites, or yeast. Atopy, also known as allergies, has many different causes. There are many forms of lumps and bumps including abscesses, hematomas, warts, hives (or ‘protein bumps’) as well as non-cancerous and cancerous masses. Below we will briefly discuss a few more of the issues we see on a routine basis. Horses can harbor two species of lice. They are the horse biting louse (Damalinia equi) and the horse sucking louse (Haematopinus asini). Afflicted horses will show signs of itching by constantly rubbing and biting at affected areas. Lice are most often found in unthrifty horses kept in unsanitary conditions. With severe infestations horses can lose patches of hair. Infestations occur more commonly during the winter when hair coats are long. Mange is a contagious skin disease caused by one of several species of mites. This disease is transmitted when larvae, nymphs, or fertilized females are transferred to a susceptible host. Mange can be transmitted directly from horse to horse, indirectly through contaminated objects that harbor the mites or through contaminated stabling quarters. Mange causes intense irritation to the skin as well as loss of hair and itching. In severe cases this can lead to debilitation and in drastic cases it may even cause death. Photosensitization is a condition in which lightly pigmented skin is hyper-reactive to sunlight due to a photodynamic agent in the skin. Horses with pink noses are good candidates for the affliction. Those affected will show discomfort and seek to scratch or rub the affected area. A reddening of the skin will develop rapidly and can be followed by swelling and later scab formation. The months of June, July and August pose the greatest danger to photosensitive horses. Another form of dermatitis that can affect horses is dermatophilosis, more commonly is known as rain rot or rain scald. This troublesome bacterial infection is most common in wet, humid climates. The bacteria that cause rain rot can live in dormancy within the skin for some time and become active when the skin is compromised in some way such as
prolonged wetting by rain, high humidity, high temperature or attacks by biting insects. When the infective zoospores reach a skin site where the normal protective barriers of the skin are reduced or deficient, they set up shop and infection is the result. Horse owners with animals who spend most of their time outdoors in the wet, rainy season should examine their horses periodically for rain rot. A handson examination is most effective. The infected horse with usually have a series of bumps along the back and croup. When rubbed, the “bumps” might come free in the form of scabs with a small hairless spot of skin showing. Your veterinarian will be able to make a confirmed diagnosis by taking a culture and testing it in a laboratory. Ringworm is a form of dermatitis that can look like a circle or a ring skin blemish, yet there are no worms or parasites involved. Instead, it is caused by a fungus. This fungus has many types and horses are susceptible to a number of them. A ringworm infection can be spread directly from horse to horse and by using common grooming tools, saddle pads, harnesses and saddles. Humans can also spread ringworm to horses and vice versa. Horses that are most susceptible are the very young, very old, or animals whose immune systems have been compromised. Ringworm is common during the fall and winter but can crop up at any time. The areas of skin under the saddle on riding horses and on the shoulder area of driving horses are frequently the sites of skin and soft tissue injury. Saddle sores are usually caused from ill-fitting tack or occasionally dirty saddle pads. The condition starts as an acute inflammation of the hair follicles and progresses to a pus-producing condition. These areas will have hair loss and possibly be hot, swollen and painful. Greasy heel, mud fever, cracked-heels, white pastern disease and dew poisoning are a number of names that horse people call scratches. The affliction usually begins with a softening of the skin behind the fetlock and the heel. It often occurs on a horse which is residing in a wet, muddy or marshy area. As the condition progresses, the affected body part is invaded by tiny mites. They feed on the epidermal debris and cause irritation to the afflicted area. The next stage can be a form of staph infection followed by a fungal invasion. This results in inflammation that is accompanied by crusty, scabby bumps or lesions. If you have any questions about your horse’s skin issues, contact your veterinarian. www. dcvet.ca

You really should consider creep feeding calves Hot, windy, dry conditions across many areas of Alberta have slowed forage growth in pastures and hay fields and, if it stays that way, could mean problems for producers. “If it stays dry the amount of growth will be limited and it’s possible that pastures will run out much earlier than normal,” says Barry Yaremcio, beef/forage specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “In general, 70 per cent of total forage growth occurs before the 15th of July. We are in early August so the potential for most grass species for regrowth is small even if significant amounts of rain do come soon. Total growth could be compromised.” Yaremcio suggests one strategy to stretch limited forage supplies is to creep feed calves throughout the summer. “Calves that are 45 to 60 days old can digest grains and use the nutrients to improve growth rates. On poor pastures, for every five pounds of creep feed consumed, calf growth rates improve by one pound. A second advantage of creep feeding calves is that the amount of grass consumed by the calf is reduced which stretches the amount of grass available for the cow.
Yaremcio says that using whole oats or barley as the sole ingredient in a creep ration for small calves doesn’t work. A creep ration requires 14 to 16 per cent protein to ‘frame out’ the skeleton properly and to develop muscle. Intakes generally are in the two to three pounds a day range for 350 pound calves and can get as high as eight pounds a day when the calves are 600 to 700 pounds. A recipe for a home grown creep feed is to include split or cracked peas at 35 per cent of the mix with oats or barley (or a combination of the two grains). If wheat is to be part of the creep feed, inclusion rate should not exceed 20 to 25 per cent of the mix to minimize the chance of acidosis. If no additional protein is added to the creep feed, it’s possible to have short fat
calves that could be discounted at the auction market come fall. Another option is a commercially prepared creep ration. “These products should contain a minimum of 75 per cent TDN (total digestible nutrients) and, again, the 14 per cent to 16 per cent protein content is required. Screening pellets generally have lower energy content than grain and don’t deliver the necessary energy needed to get the additional gains on the calves. “Creep feeding the calves for the majority of the grazing season can result in 25 to 100 pounds of additional gain compared to animals that aren’t supplemented. If 700 to 800 pound calf prices stay at the current price of $2 a pound for steers, this could increase the value of the calf by $50 to $200 per calf. It’s a good return on investment.” Contact: 310-FARM (3276)

Why Brazil’s sugar addiction is fantastic news for Canada The USDA expects Brazil to produce 39.7m tonnes of processed sugar this marketing year (MY). That’s up 1.3% from last year and its highest level of output recorded to date. The USDA also forecasts 5% year-over-year growth in Brazilian sugar exports (to 29.1m tonnes) in the 2017-18 MY. As world demand for sugar continues to grow, Brazil – the

world’s largest sugar producer and exporter – has no apparent shortage of markets. Their exports aren’t dominated by any large players; instead they’re demand-driven from numerous markets. Brazil will likely face irregular weather in several regions this year. The country’s recent financial upheaval has also reduced invest-
ment to fix aging sugarcane fields. Those two factors combined have produced a USDA forecast of a 1% fall in their sugarcane crop. Falling sugarcane production typically doesn’t lead to higher sugar production and exports. But with sugar’s increased profitability, Brazil is using more of its sugarcane in the production of sugar instead of ethanol. Current corn prices are low by historical standards, but the story would likely be worse if Brazil was devoting more sugarcane to ethanol production. As Brazil has shifted some of its sugarcane production to sugar rather than to ethanol, it has opened a wider market for US corn-based ethanol. In fact, since Brazil’s shift from ethanol to sugar production, it has dramatically increased its ethanol imports. According to the US Energy Information Administration, year-over-year ethanol exports from the United States to Brazil were up almost 600% (to 1.1 million barrels) in April 2017 (the most recent data available). The USDA expects US ethanol production to remain high and corn production to fall 5.9% in 2017-18. Ethanol and its byproducts utilized 36.0% of US corn production in 2016-17, expected to rise to 38.6% in 2017-18. The takeaway here is that the global economic conditions favouring Brazil’s increased sugar production are also helping to tighten the North American corn supply. This market opportunity for US corn-based ethanol, along with any realized weather-related impacts to this year’s harvest, will help drive down US corn stocks-to-use ratios in 2017-18. And that’s good news for corn producers and Canadian agriculture. Blair Baillargeon, FCC Ag Economics student intern.

Farm equipment expenses constant despite higher prices Farm equipment as proportion of total expenses trending sideways In 2007, farm equipment represented 9.6% of total farm expenses (using depreciation on machinery as a proxy for farm equipment expenditures). It represented only 10.2% of total expenses in 2016, after the big price jumps of the last decade. And no real surprise, the Prairie Provinces have the highest proportion of equipment expense – with equipment representing more than 10% of total farm expenses in each province – due to the region’s largescale crop production. Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia have the lowest proportion of equipment expenses at 5.0%, 6.2%, and 6.7% respectively.
represented nearly 30% of total farm expenses. In 2016, total equipment expenses represent only 20% of total expenses due to large reductions in fuel and repairs. Significant changes in the technology now used in farm equipment and better pest control have resulted in improved farm management and fuel efficiency. Farmers can maximize the use of equipment and spread costs over more acres, especially with the elimination of summer fallow.
Total farm equipment expenses trending lower Total farm equipment expenses, including fuel, repairs, and cost of ownership, have been trending lower in relation to overall farm expenses. In 1971, total equipment expenses

Feed barley pricing pulls back from summer highs The marketing season transitioned from old to now new crop at the beginning of August, and a couple of weeks ago, PFCanada wrapped up old crop marketing of 2016 production feed barley. It was a housekeeping exercise which just happened to coincide with the best old crop pricing opportunity of the past year. Prairie cash barley prices steadied in late May and turned higher into July, with Lethbridge area cattle feeders bid as high as $220 per tonne ($4.80 per bushel) for the season’s peak so far. Rising prices adjusted to reflect dry conditions in Saskatch-
ewan and Alberta. Drought in North Dakota and Montana compounded the issue. However, prices backtracked over the past two weeks with Lethbridge feeders bidding around $197 per tonne ($4.30 per bushel) for nearby delivery. September delivered bids inched up to start this week to about $202 per tonne. New crop delivered bids in Alberta’s feedlot alley (October to December) remain firm around $214 per tonne. Reduced seeded acreage to barley in 2017, combined with recent hot, dry weather, resulted in locked bins
this summer at a time when prices typically ease from seasonal highs ahead of new crop availability. But farmer selling has picked up lately. Also, it seems that vomitoxin levels are less of a concern than earlier in the year. There is no longer a notable premium on a maximum one part per million vomitoxin barley. In Saskatchewan, we also saw quite a leap in feed barley pricing,
19
with values reaching as high as $3.55 per bushel picked up on the farm earlier in July. Those prices ticked back $3.25 per bushel. Movement seems to be pushed back to an AugustSeptember timeline, but these prices are still an improvement from $3 per bushel or less seen in the late spring. PFCanada continues to forecast a tightening fundamental structure for the 2017-2018 marketing year.

Don’t boil your horse. They don’t like it. digest something they are learning. It’s a very good practice and will really speed up the amount of things a horse can learn and shorten the time it takes to learn them. “Soaking” is allowing the horse

time to relax and think. It may be standing still or walking quietly along. It is a time when nothing is being asked of the horse. When I say “Don’t boil them” I think of times when too much is asked of a horse, when it is too much of a stretch for them to learn, grasp, or get to in that session. Too much pressure is used trying to achieve an unreasonable amount. Keeping a reasonable expectation of what a horse can learn in a session is different for each horse, and the capabilities of that particular horse. Have big expectations but get there in small pieces, and let them soak and have space to think after each little improvement. Pushing for a big expectation without soaking along the way on the smaller individual improvements will just boil them up and actually slow down the goal you are wanting. I truly believe horses like to learn and are better for it, given the opportunity to soak not boil. An example of a big expectation might be to have your horse load quietly into the trailer when they are scared of it or have had nothing but bad memories every time they see one. Use any example you want, flying lead change, canter pirouette, sliding stop. I like to always remind myself it isn’t about the trailer. It is about having a horse that follows a feel on the rope. It’s about a horse that knows if they try they will be rewarded (soaking). It’s about teaching them to trust your judgment and requests. If they look towards the trailer, step towards the trailer, sniff the floor, all these little tries need to have a rub and a little time to soak. The opposite would be to boil them and the pressure stays on until the horse is in the trailer.
The ropes come out behind the butt, one person is pulling on the lead another on the butt rope and a third whooping and hollering behind the horse. In the last scenario it is all about the trailer with no thought to how many things need to be addressed or need to be working before thinking about loading. When a horse is pushed, pulled, and dragged into a trailer they don’t learn how to load or unload. They didn’t get to practice. One foot in then one foot out, then two feet step in and two feet step out and so on. That is the horse practicing. Many times people end up boiling their horses, too much pressure, unreasonable expectations and no time allowing the soak. We need time, just as horses do, to learn where each piece of the puzzle goes rather then trying to place all the pieces at once. I have found it to be true, especially for the over-achievers; slowing down and rewarding the smaller pieces more often gets us where we want to be faster. Let them soak so they will grow, if we boil them then all too often they will be cooked, and then they are done. Glenn Stewart What is your dream with horse? Unseeded prairie spring acres could see more winter crops Richard Kamchen More winter cereals could get planted in untraditional areas that were too wet to seed this spring - but extreme dryness elsewhere could stymie an overall bump in winter crop acreage. Many growers in Alberta and Saskatchewan who were unable to seed this spring are considering planting winter cereals, say Alberta Agriculture cereal extension specialist Clair Langlois and Western Winter Wheat Initiative agronomist Paul Thoroughgood. Alberta producers were hardest hit by wet spring conditions. Up to 900,000 acres went unseeded
thanks to saturated fields in the Peace, west-central and eastcentral regions of the province, and parts of south-central Alberta, says Langlois. Waterlogged soils also impeded seeding operations in parts of northeastern and northwestern Saskatchewan. First- time growers For those who couldn’t get a crop in, winter wheat represents something they always wanted to try but never could get seeded on time in previous years, Langlois says. “The majority of people, if they
plant into some of their unseeded acreage, it will be their first time, or it would be a significant time since their last experience growing winter wheat,” Thoroughgood says. Also appealing to farmers are the crop’s extra yields and simply getting their land into production, Langlois says. “Many of these unseeded fields affected are often their wetter fields, and with so much ground moisture on them – even now – it is attractive to get them planted while at their driest,” he adds. No overall acreage increase But winter cereal acreage in other Prairie regions might actually be down this season. Dryness in southern parts of the Prairies is significantly ad-

vancing harvest operations, but historically, producers have been reluctant to seed winter crops when it’s very dry, Thoroughgood says. Farmers, however, are better off seeding into dry soils than delaying in hopes of rainfall, he explains. Bottom line Thouroughgood says if farmers wait for rain, by the time it dries up again to go seed, the opportunity for germination is lost. “I’ve grown 18 winter wheat crops now and over half of them I’ve seeded into dry, hard ground,” Thoroughgood says. “Only once in those 18 years have I not had emergence in the fall because it didn’t rain until the middle of October.”

Starting formal obedience lessons; when is the time? ests. This is an indication that it is time to work on some obedience skills. The start to formal obedience should be putting a lie down on the dog. This can be done in a couple of ways depending on the pups age and nature. For a young, soft pup, a weiner or treat may work well. An older or more independent pup can be started with a leash and choke chain. To use the treat method take a few small pieces ofwiener and feed it to the dog. Once he gets eating the weiner then drag your hand down towards the floor in front of the pups nose and say “lie down’. The pup will follow the wiener down with his nose if you get your hand in the right posi-
tion. As soon as he lies down to get the weiner allow him to eat it and give him praise. Do this 2 or 3 times and then quit. Short sessions will keep the pup interested which is important. This can be done a couple of times a day until the pup automatically lies down when asked. If you work on the obedience before feeding breakfast the wiener will have more appeal and it will give the pup more motivation to get the wiener. This will lead to a quicker learning session. Carol Nelson 250-772-5315 If anyone has any questions or ideas for topics, please let me know.

If time has been spent with the young dog, then chances are there has been some obedience happening. The dog should know by the tone of your voice and your actions if you are pleased or unhappy with his behavior. As he gets older and starts to developed more independence the obedience will need to become a priority. When a pup is young he will be happy to tag along and follow as you go about your daily routine. As he gains his confidence he will no longer feel the need to be so dependent on you and will start venturing further away by himself. \When this starts to happen there will be a reluctance to come when called and a general ignoring of you if he has other inter-

THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED WITH YOU IN MIND. CHALLENGER® SERIES 500, 700 AND 750 CREW
We built the Challenger Series on the principle of possibility. It’s up to you to define its utility. Snow, sleet, mud or heat, there’s nothing that can stop you from your next challenge. Take the trails less traveled, and if they don’t exist, blaze them yourself. Own the land with a machine built to handle rough terrain. The Challenger Series conforms to your challenge, so you can give it purpose you could have never imagined.

On the ride out to Horse Thief Hideout: go there! First things first, I have to apologize for taking so long to get this lil article done. It sure has been crazy in my world. Here we go.......
walking to hopefully find the friends I was meeting up with, which took about three minutes.
........The ride out to Horse Thief was absolutely amazing. The sun was blazing and the scenery was absolutely beautiful, and the smell of the air was relaxing and put me at ease riding roads I’ve never been on........
I retrieved my bike and parked her with the others at our little dome tent village. I changed clothes and started just wandering about. There were tents as far as the eye could see, and so many bikes of every make, model and color. There was live music, a burn out pit, vendors and food trucks, which is where I found one of my favorite people and we hugged it out, (bikers really do like their hugs). As the sun was on it’s way down people started making their way to the stage to get a good seat for the band, and they were awesome. Then you could hear the revving of engines and popping of tires in the burn-out pits, so if you’re ever going to be in the burn out pits make sure you have extra tires. There were so many people to meet, but the ones I did meet I hope to see again, because they kind of felt like family.
....If you have never been to the rally at Horse Thief Hideout, you NEED to go. My time there was way way way too short. I was not able to be there for the poker runs and other rides but I still managed to have an amazing time. I was fortunate to have followed a sweet couple to the campground as I got lost, they lead me all the way to the gate. After being there for only five minutes I think I made six new friends. The folks at the gate were very friendly and answered all my questions. They even gave me a roll of toilet paper, if I needed more it would cost me a dollar. With my bike parked at the gate I started
Once I was done exploring for the night I made my way back to our campsite and found a place to sit at the picnic table and just
listened and took in all the stories and things folks had to say. Morning came, coffees were drank, and gear was packed up and pictures were taken. At either 0900 or 1000 a gentleman in a kilt went up to the hilltop and played “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes, which he did every morning during the rally. Made me cry as I thought of my mom and dad while he played. It was beautiful. I was taken on a short tour of the campground, (thank you Bear), gave hugs to all and left for home with two other riders. We stopped for breakfast at Huckleberry’s, was so good and we were hungry. The ride home was just as good as it was going out there. I cannot wait until next year, I plan on being there for the whole weekend, but what I did experience was absolutely fantastic. I would like to thank the folks at Horse Thief for giving me the opportunity to experience this wonderful weekend, next year I want the whole effect. Can’t wait.. Thanks again!!! See you next year!!!!!!

Planning crop storage before it comes off the field As harvest kicks off, getting the crop off the field is important, but paying attention to how and where it’s stored is equally as important. Agronomy Specialist Angela Brackenreed with the Canola Council of Canada says producers put a lot of work into getting the crop into the bin and it’s horrible to lose quality after it’s in there. Plan ahead She says there is plenty to think about with bins even before the combine starts. “Ensure they are clean, free of insects, other grains and mold,” Brackenreed says. She says getting both the moisture content and temperature down becomes the focus as canola is taken off the field. “It’s really critical for that safe storage of canola that we condition it down to eight per cent and ideally down to 15C or lower.” Kevin Serfas, who farms in the Lethbridge, Alta. area, took barley off earlier than usual this year. Think outside the bin While he keeps a close eye on the grain that’s stored to ensure the moisture and temperature are low, he also came up with a different solution to help him get the crop
off and manage what is going into his bins at the same time. “When we started harvesting, the grain was 35 to 36C in temperature, so we weren’t overly excited about putting it into aeration bins to cool it off because I need those bins later in the harvest,” Serfas said. “So with that stuff, we were making sure we were doing straight sale off the combine.” He says that works fairly well for a certain percentage of the crops, adding the key is about planning ahead on how much will be sold right off the field and what is going into storage. “It costs money to put it in a bin,” Serfas says. “It costs money to take it out of the bin. It costs money to truck it both ways and storage is expensive to build.” Bottom line Brackenreed says it’s important for monitoring to keep accurate records of what went into each bin and its condition on storage. “We can quickly forget the condition of grain that went into which bin and forget which bin is what,” Brackenreed says. “So if you have a good record of that you know ‘Bin D’ really needs extra attention and more monitoring than ‘Bin A’.

These are your back to school breakfast cups, kids cooking spray 18 refrigerated biscuits (unbaked) 8 ounces breakfast sausage 7 large eggs 1/2 cup milk salt and ground black pepper to taste 1 cup mild shredded Cheddar cheese Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease 18 muffin cups with cooking spray. Roll out biscuit dough on a lightly floured surface to form 5-inch rounds. Place each round in the prepared muffin cups, pressing into the base and sides to form a dough cup. Cook and stir sausage in a skillet over medium-high heat until browned and cooked through, 5 to 10 minutes; drain fat. Spoon sausage into dough cups. Whisk eggs, milk, salt, and pepper together in a bowl until well-beaten. Pour egg mixture
into each dough cup, filling each just below the top of the biscuit dough. Sprinkle Cheddar cheese on top of egg mixture. Bake in the preheated oven until eggs are set and biscuit dough is golden, 15 to 18 minutes. Cook’s Note: You may use any type of meat that you wish. This is very breakfast friendly. My family like to add turkey and bacon sometimes also. Its very tasty. Good with orange juice. Tip Aluminum foil helps keep food moist, ensures it cooks evenly, keeps leftovers fresh, and makes clean-up easy.
Chef Hal Daisy is back with some mac and cheese 1 (16 ounce) package elbow macaroni 1/4 cup butter 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/8 teaspoon white pepper 3 cups milk 1 pinch ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon salt 3 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, divided 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Fill a large pot with lightly salted water and bring to a rolling boil over high heat. Once the water is boiling, stir in the macaroni, and return to a boil. Cook the pasta uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is cooked through but still slightly firm, about 8 minutes. Drain well. Melt 1/4 cup butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. When the butter starts to foam and bubble, stir in the flour; cook on medium heat until flour just begins to turn pale yellow, 3 to 4 minutes. Add thyme, cayenne pepper,
and white pepper; cook and stir another minute, then whisk in 1 cup of milk until smooth. Pour in remaining milk and whisk again. Bring the sauce just to a simmer. Stir in nutmeg, Worcestershire sauce, and salt; simmer on medium-low heat until thickened, about 8 minutes, whisking often. Turn heat off, then add 2 1/4 cups of Cheddar cheese; stir until melted and combined. Add Dijon mustard. Transfer the macaroni into a casserole dish, then pour in the cheese sauce; stir to thoroughly combine sauce with pasta. Mix panko bread crumbs and 1 tablespoon melted butter in a small bowl, and sprinkle crumbs on top of macaroni and cheese. Sprinkle remaining 3/4 cup of Cheddar cheese on top. Bake in the preheated oven until bread crumbs and Cheddar cheese topping are golden brown, about 20 minutes.
