Every second counts: it’s Northern Horizon fire prevention week Your
Team
In support of Fire Prevention Week, the Horizon encourages all Peace region households to develop a plan together and practice it. A home escape plan includes working smoke alarms on every level of the home, in every bedroom, and near all sleeping areas. It also includes two ways out of every room, usually a door and a window, with a clear path to an outside meeting place (like a tree, light pole, or mailbox) that’s a safe distance from the home. “Home escape planning is one of the most basic but fundamental elements of home fire safety, and can truly make the difference between life and death in a fire situation,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. NFPA and the Dawson Creek Fire Department offer these additional tips and recommendations for developing and practicing a home escape plan: • Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit. • Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out. • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them. • Make sure the number of your home is
clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find. • Close doors behind you as you leave — this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. • Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building. To learn more about this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Every Second Counts” visit firepreventionweek.org.

October 2017 BOARD ON THE ROAD
The September 7 Board meeting was held in Tumbler Ridge at the Visitor Centre.
PRRRDY Dayz in the Region The Regional District Prrrdy Dayz at DC Recycling and Recycle It went well! These events were held to entice people out to visit the recycle depots and learn about recycling with games and prizes! The Dawson Creek Prrrdy Day had about 150 people attend and the Fort St. John Prrrdy Day had over 350 attendees.
Keep your family safe by having an escape plan for all household members. When the smoke alarm sounds, everyone must know what to do and where to go. Develop a fire escape plan and practice it with your family, keeping the following in mind: Know two ways out of every room, if possible. The first way out is the door while the alternate route could be a window that can be exited safely. Make sure all designated escape routes are accessible and free of clutter. Leave the building as quickly as possible. Once outside, don’t re-enter the building for any reason. Call 9-1-1 from outside the building using a cell phone or a neighbours’ phone.

Brian Williams headlines FCC forum speaker series
Breakfast Brief GETTING COMPETITIVE AGAIN Grain prices have pulled back a bit from yesterday’s gains, but are mixed this morning. Canola and Minneapolis hard red spring wheat are leading the positive gains. For canola, prices are up mainly thanks to the Canadian Loonie falling back below 80 cents USD for the first time in about 5 weeks. Rains are slowing down the U.S. harvest. The wet weather helped push up corn and soybean prices yesterday. As Garrett discussed in Grain Markets Today, U.S. corn exports announced yesterday were pretty healthy at 814,000 MT.
Over the last 11 years, more than 61,000 people involved in Canadian agriculture have been inspired through Farm Credit Canada’s (FCC) Forums and this year promises more uplifting insight. In the coming months, FCC Forums will feature presentations from Brian Williams, award-winning sportscaster, Manjit Minhas, Beer Baroness and star of CBC’s Dragons’ Den, Dr. Georges Sabongui, psychologist and stress expert, inspirational speaker and author and Wendel Clark, ambassador and former captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The cross-Canada events allow producers and other members of the agriculture community to hear from a lineup of high-profile speakers at no charge. Past participants say the events are a great networking opportunity and they leave feeling inspired, ready to set new goals personally and professionally. Brian Williams is a decorated sports broadcaster for more than 40 years. His respected broadcast style has endeared him to millions of Canadians from coast-to-coast. He has covered a total of 14 Olympics (12 for CBC, 2 for CTV) – his first in Montreal in 1976 – and every high-profile sporting event around the globe. “I was born in Winnipeg and as a young boy lived in the small town of
Mexico was the largest buyer of U.S. exports. This trend is interesting given that U.S. President Trump has been a very vocal critic of Mexico. While Mexico has been exploring alternative sourcing options, no one has been able to meet their needs. Argentina is the likely next best supplier, but the nation seems a little unreliable at times, relative to America’s geographical supremacy and stronger supply chain. U.S. soybeans exports came in on the lower end of expectations at a little more than 1 million tonnes. That said; the rains helped keep the oilseed in the green. In other export news, American oil shipments are soaring. Last week, a record of 1.984 million barrels per day got exported last week. That’s almost 500,000 barrels more than the previous week, which was when the country set its previous record. To give some context of how large this oil export program is, Kuwait, a major oil player, usually ships out just over 2 million barrels per day. Coming back to the farm, U.S. government checks are in the mail this week. Nearly $8 Billion in Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs will hit farmer’s mailboxes across America. There’s another $1.6 billion coming from the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Given the drought issues in the Northern Plains and lower grain prices, one hopes these payments will help the individual feel competitive again with a bit of a stronger bank account. Brazil Running Out of Grain? The Brazilian government recently said that the country shipped out 4.3 million tonnes of soybeans in September. That’s another monthly export record and slightly above what the private shipping data had indicated. Ag Resource says that there are 2.7 million tonnes of Brazilian soybean scheduled to get shipped out in October. They are speculating, however, that this number could come in above 3 million tonnes, given the trend of final numbers surpassing expectations the last few months. It’s worth mentioning that 75% of Brazil’s exported soybeans have gone to China. This means that China is more important to Brazil than it is to America. With a record crop getting shipped out a record pace, the carryout numbers that are currently being estimated may be on the high side. Conversely, despite shipping out a lot of corn, there’s likely to be a record amount of corn left over in Brazil by the end of the 2017/18 crop year. This is intuitively keeping farmers more interested in planting more soybeans.
Invermere, in the East Kootenay region of eastern B.C.,” said Williams. “I am well aware of the role that farming and ranching and the people involved in those industries have played and continue to play in building our country. Today’s emphasis on health, good food and a healthy lifestyle speaks to the importance of and respect for farming. I am looking forward to being part of the FCC Forums and learning more about your great and very important industry.” The FCC Forums, presented in English, stop at Kingston, Ont. (November 25), Regina, Sask. (November 29), London, Ont. (December 6), Red Deer Alta. (December 14), Brandon, Man. (March 2), Saskatoon, Sask. (March 14) and Grande Prairie, Alta. (March 27). See Brian, Manjit and Dr. Georges at FCC Forums in Regina, Red Deer, London, Brandon, Saskatoon, and Grande Prairie, or catch Manjit, Dr. Georges, and Wendel in Kingston. Another FCC Forum, presented in French, will be held in Drummondville, Que. (March 21). “Our impressive lineup of speakers will inform, engage and inspire participants of any age and no matter what role they happen to play in Canada’s agriculture food chain,” said Todd Klink, executive vice-president and chief marketing officer at FCC.
EU Wheat Woes The UK’s Ag Ministry says that this year’s wheat harvest will be 15.2 million tonnes. This is much higher than the International Grains Council’s estimate of 13.9 million tonnes and Coceral’s forecast of 14.75 million tonnes. However, there is a tight wheat carryout in the UK, mainly thanks to the ethanol plants’ use of wheat. As such, farmers are hoping for better prices and are not selling. Agrimoney notes that the spread between feed wheat and feed barley is widening in the UK. This comes as malt barley prices are also improving, mainly because of some quality issues. In Europe, wheat exports are down significantly compared to a year ago. 2 million fewer tonnes were exported this week than a year ago. Corn exports in the EU are up 1.3 million tonnes compared to the same week a year ago. What’s certain is that the size of the Russian wheat export program is weighing on the ability for Europe to compete. With some poorer quality in Germany, France has become the only major player that can export decent quality in droves. Have a great weekend!

The oat market stabilizes
Oat futures have built a modest amount of price premium back into the market since bottoming on Sept. 5. However, after gaining about 20 cents from the early September low, the nearby December oat futures contract stabilized around the US$2.50per-bushel level for the better part of the past two weeks. In terms of overhead chart resistance, the 100-day moving average serves as a near-term price ceiling right about $2.55 per bushel, which is keeping things from going higher on a technical perspective. Also noteworthy, the $2.55 level marks the 33 per cent Fibonacci retracement of the move from the contract’s July high to September low. Cash oat bids remain quiet on this side of the border, with Prairie bids spotty and location sensitive. Milling oats likely trade around CAD$2.50 to $2.60 per bushel picked up in southern Saskatchewan, with freight knocking down the price as you move further northeast. Ongoing price sluggishness in
the cash oat market is not so much a demand issue, but rather the result of bigger than expected Canadian oat production this summer, last pegged by Statistics Canada at 3.802 million tonnes, up from 3.2 million tonnes last year. With a big crop here and good quality, it should help replenish commercial inventory. Other than periodic deferred demand reloads, winter cash oat rallies are likely to be contained, something like 25 to 40 cents per bushel may be about the best we can expect. Price appreciation in Southeastern Saskatchewan canola sees price bounces towards the upper end of that range because of closer proximity to the U.S. market. I find it doubtful that oat miller drawing from northeastern Saskatchewan needs to surpass $3 per bushel in a deferred delivery position, which makes high $2’s generic elevator. Add 25 cents per bushel to Manitoba.

Farmers face stress, but help is available Long, stressful days spent working alone is taking its toll on farmers’ mental health. “They (farmers) are living their distress in isolation,” says Montrealbased Amir Georges Sabongui, a PhD in clinical psychology. “They’re not reaching out for help when they need it.” One of this year’s FCC Forum speakers, Sabongui said he’s known as Dr. Georges. He’s a motivational speaker specializing in resilience and organizational leadership solutions. During the past several years, there’s more stress, depression and a higher risk of suicide among farmers compared to the general population and compared to historical data, he says. Andria Jones-Bitton, of the University of Guelph’s population medicine department, agrees. Her online, nation-wide farmers’ mental health survey, done from September 2015 to January 2016, found producers have high levels of stress, anxiety, emotional exhaustion and burnout. The survey received more than 1,100 responses. 45 per cent of respondents said they had high stress,
while 58 per cent had varying levels of anxiety and 35 per cent said they were depressed. Forces beyond farmers’ control Saskatchewan grain farmer Norm Hall says stress levels are high among farmers because they depend on forces beyond their control, such as the weather, for their livelihood. “We depend somewhere between 50 and 60 per cent on Mother Nature to do our jobs, and she can be quite fickle,” he notes. Check your dashboard Sabongui says farmers should develop good ways to evaluate their mental health. Green lights on their dashboard indicate they’re happy, engaged and motivated. Yellow lights signify possible trouble. “You start chewing on negative thoughts, start isolating yourself socially and have more trouble motivating yourself,” he says. With red lights, farmers begin having suicidal thoughts. It’s critical for farmers who are distressed “to break the silence and reach out and get some help,” Sabongui says. Varying levels of resources across Canada In Ontario, Jones-Bitton is leading a group creating a mental health literacy-training program for farmers. Mental health literacy “is about understanding the common mental health struggles people in our communities might be facing,” she says. Sabongui says Quebec has peersupport programs where trained farmers check in on neighbours. Farm equipment and other industry representatives serving farms could do this type of checking in too. “Take five to 10 minutes in addition to talking about all these great new products you want to sell to the farmer and just ask them how they’re doing,” Sabongui says. Here’s a list of mental health help lines across the country: British Columbia: 1-800-784-2433 Alberta: 1-877-303-2642 Saskatchewan: 1-800-667-4442 Manitoba: 1-866-367-3276 or 1-888322-3019

Please prepare for fall tree planting Whether spring or fall, preparation and planning are key components of the tree planting process. “Even though most farmers and landowners plant their trees for shelterbelts or around their yards in the spring, fall tree planting is much more common for city landscape and home yard projects,” says Toso Bozic, bioenergy/agroforestry specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “That being said, there are very few differences between spring and fall planting.” In the fall, there is more moisture in the soil due to summer and fall rain and higher humidity. “This gives the root system a better chance to get established so it can be ready to get growing earlier in spring. In early spring, the soil is often dry and there is little humidity in the air.” Bozic says there are several steps to consider prior to planting trees in the fall. “When it comes to picking a tree species, many rural owners are very familiar with shelterbelt tree species selection. However, they may be less familiar with tree or shrub species that are not designed for shelterbelts, and with species generally grown in urban areas. Tree species diversity is crucial for the health and well-being of your yard or shelterbelt.” A variety of trees and shrubs species can be found in urban areas including ones that, in theory, should not be grown here at all due to Alberta’s harsh climate conditions. “However, they are doing just fine in our cities and towns, and provide great beauty and diversity alongside our native tree and shrubs species. A quick look around cities and towns may give you some ideas for what to plant - be creative and experiment!” In the spring most people plant small trees, while in fall choosing larger trees and shrubs is a common practice, says Bozic. “At season end, there are many trees and shrubs on sale at local tree nurseries or various retail stores. They come in containers or basket and burlap.
“If you buy trees in the typical black container stock that comes in various sizes, always inspect them prior to buying. Check for any broken branches, weak branch crotches, signs of insect or disease, irregular shapes and, most importantly, for a bound root system. If you see the roots already coming out of the container, most likely the root system is bound which can create future problems. If you see the roots are excessively bound or the tree is damaged – simply don’t buy it.” Balled and burlap trees are usually larger caliper (diameter) trees that are dug up, balled in a wire basket and wrapped in juta burlap. Bozic recommends doing an inspection of the overall health of the tree prior to buying it. As for selecting a planting site, there are many things to pay attention to, such as soil, moisture, slope, exposure, and physical barriers like a house, fence, or power line. Bozic says that to avoid potential future problems that trees can cause to yard, home and buildings, make sure to see mature trees of that species before choosing the planting site. “Planting trees in fall requires some planning and diligent work ahead of time. It’s hard work, but very rewarding in the long term. Always have fun.”

Alberta’s agriculture and agri-food sector took centre stage Sept. 30 to Oct. 9 in a trade and investment mission to the European Union led by Minister Oneil Carlier. The mission supports Alberta’s agriculture and agri-food producers’ efforts to increase exports to the EU’s growing markets and attract value-added firms and investment capital. Minister Carlier met with EU agri-business representatives to promote this province as a preferred destination for investment. He will also meet with companies that have existing operations in Alberta. The minister will participate with Alberta companies at the Anuga trade show, which bills itself as the world’s largest and most important trade fair for food and beverages. Alberta and France will sign an amended letter of intent to include forestry along with agriculture as an area for collaboration and research. Under the provisional application of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, Canada will have preferential access to the world’s most lucrative market, with 500 million consumers across 28 EU member states and almost $17 trillion in annual economic activity. On Sept. 21, 2017, 94 per cent of agriculture tariff lines became duty-free for Canadian goods, with an additional one per cent to be phased out over seven years. The EU is Alberta’s fifth-largest export market, with agriculture and food exports valued at $404 million in 2016. The region is a major export destination for Alberta’s wheat, canola seed, prepared animal feed, beef and bison. The region is also an important source of foreign direct investment for Canada and Alberta. The EU is Canada’s second largest source of foreign investment after the United States with stock totalling $259 billion in 2015. The EU offers great potential for investment in grain and agrifood processing, functional foods and natural health products, and bio-industries. The estimated international mission cost for Minister Carlier, one minister’s office staff and two department officials is $41,625.
Prairie crop quality more encouraging than yields As the Canadian Prairie harvest gets closer to completion, signs are pointing to reduced yields but good or better crop quality. Alberta “Provincially, crop yields are down 10 to 20 per cent from last year, and five to 10 per cent from their five-year averages,” says Agriculture Financial Services Corporation risk analyst James Wright. Hot, dry weather impacted south and central areas, while late seeding and too much rain affected the northwest, he says. Areas experiencing dry conditions had many expecting poorer quality crops, due principally to light-weight grain, but quality is surprisingly good. “I think it’s a combination of the plant itself restricting kernel development in difficult times, and farmers using production methods which conserve moisture such that it is available for use by the plant,” says Wright. Harvest delays, however, will
likely downgrade the crops remaining in fields, Alberta Agriculture says. Also negatively impacting both yield and quality is recent frosts. “Most crops were well along and damage will be limited to grade loss, but I’m anticipating some crops seeded late this spring will be caught as immature and will incur some yield loss,” says Wright. Saskatchewan Saskatchewan is experiencing similar crop yield and quality dynamics. “Quality is the best we’ve had for years,” says provincial cropping management specialist Shannon Friesen. The same can’t be said for yields. “All crops have been affected by the lack of moisture in southern and central areas.” Lentils came off before the rain fell and disease like fusarium was minimal. There are, however, lower protein content and lighter bushel weights in cereal crops, and northern Saskatch-

ewan has reported some sprouting and bleaching in cereals due to heavy rains, Friesen adds. Manitoba Both yields and quality are good for Manitoba cereals and canola, says provincial crop specialist Anne Kirk. “Compared to the five-year average, yields would be considered a good growing year for Manitoba farmers for spring cereals and canola,” Kirk says. Yields have ranged from 55 to 100 bushels per acre for spring wheat; 110 to 180 bushels per acre for oats; 75 to 120 bushels per acre for barley; and 30 to 65 bushels per acre for canola. Average soybean yields for the central, eastern and south Interlake regions of the province ranged from 20 to 45 bushels per acre. Bottom line Prairie 2017 crop quality looks good so far, but hot, dry conditions in Saskatchewan and Alberta has depressed yields.

Input sought on sustainable beef indicators Ranchers, consumers and others who have thoughts on how beef and its cattle should be sustainably produced in Canada are asked to speak up again, this time by early November at the latest. The Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB), in the midst of developing a Verified Sustainable Beef Framework, has released its new draft list of sustainability indicators, which “reflect what will be measured to evaluate sustainable practices across the beef value chain,” for public consultations. “Based on feedback from the first consultation, indicators have been refined, and more detailed metrics across the three levels of the scoring system have been added,” Page Stuart, an Alberta cattle feeder who co-chaired the roundtable committee that developed the indicators, said in a release Thursday. The comment period for “final public input” on the sustainability indicators opened Thursday and will run until Nov. 4. Along with verification protocols, “chain of custody” guidelines and sustainability claims, the final production and processing indicators will form part of the CRSB’s Verified Sustainable Beef Framework, which is expected to be launched in December. “I believe these indicators will provide the beef processing sector with the support to implement sustainable practices in their operations, and will assist the Canadian beef industry to meet consumer demand for programs that show our commitment to sustainable beef production,” Calgary-area cattle producer and CRSB chair Cherie CopithorneBarnes said in the same release. Criteria for sustainable use of natural resources include ensuring water resources and air emissions are “responsibly managed” and land resources and ecosystem health are “maintained or enhanced.” In terms of impacts on people and communities, the indicators include ensuring operations show a “safe and healthy” work environment, “equity and respect” in treatment of workers, community involvement, career development opportunities, and a provincial or federal license to operate. Indicators for animal health and welfare include ensuring cattle are regularly monitored and have sufficient quantity and quality of water and feed, when required, to meet their physical needs. Operations must also take actions to “minimize animal pain and distress,” and that compromised and sick animals are “managed appropriately.”

Do I need to feed my horse more in the winter?
nal furnace for your horse. Straw is excellent in this regard, but you should make sure your horse has good teeth and chews straw properly before you feed it to avoid any risk of impaction colic. He should not drop any of his feed as he chews (called quidding), should appear to chew evenly with both sides of the jaw and should not make any abnormal movement in his head as he swallows. In general, I recommend at least one extra flake per day of hay during the winter, and two to three extras (and perhaps some straw) on colder days. Provided a horse is in good body condition (not overweight), however, I prefer offering horses hay free choice, so they can eat what they need to maintain overall energy balance with the additional calories to keep them warm.

Shannon Pratt-Phillips, Ph.D. When horses digest forage it generates heat. Find out how much you need to feed to keep your horse warm. Additional hay in the winter can provide two things for your horse – calories to help fuel him so he can withstand colder temperatures, and fibre, which, when fermented in the horse’s large intestine, also provides heat. Horses produce body heat by shivering and conserve heat through vasoconstriction (constriction of blood vessels) and piloerection (when body hair stands on end). This requires additional calories, or the horse will use its own reserves and eventually lose weight, which often happens in the winter if you don’t feed more. Hay has calories, and is safe to feed free choice or just more of it, unlike grain. When feeds are digested by the horse, it is an inefficient process, where energy is lost as heat. This heat increment of feeding, that is, the heat energy lost during digestion and fermentation, is highest in feeds that are high in fibre (forages, beet pulp, etc). Therefore, giving your horse some additional hay, or even straw, in winter provides additional fibre that can create a bit of an inter-

Foot rot and sole abscesses - know the difference By Dr. Mike Ross Almost every beef producer has encountered foot lameness in their herd. In this article I am going to discuss the differences between two of the more common forms of foot problems and how to handle them when they occur. In our practice we see a lot of Sole Abscesses misdiagnosed and treated as Footrot. Accurate diagnosis of these foot lameness has a direct effect on successful treatment outcome. Footrot in cattle is a common disease caused by a bacterium gaining entry into the foot through a break in the skin around the foot or tissues between the claws. The bacterium and its toxins cause severe inflammation in the soft tissue structures. Characteristic symptom of Footrot is swelling of the foot and lower limb combined with severe lameness. The claws are usually spread apart. If there is not any swelling and they are very lame you probably are not dealing with Footrot. Sole abscesses or toe abscesses also cause severe lameness in cattle. They can be sudden onset, and are not usually associated with swelling of the lower limb and spreading between the claws. They occur when an infection occurs under the sole, or in the toe region and are caused by infection gaining entrance to the region through cracks, punctures, abrasions etc. The infection then seems to pressure up causing extreme pain. Usually one claw is affected causing them to walk in a base narrow or base wide posture, depending on whether the inside claw or outside claw is affected. When untreated they sometimes break out and drain at
the hairline or coronet commonly in the heel region. Treatment of Footrot is usually accomplished easily if caught early. The bacteria responsible is very sensitive to penicillin and responds to treatment quickly. If it is allowed to become chronic the infection can enter vital structures of the foot including the bones, joints, and tendon sheaths. These chronic infections are almost impossible to treat and don’t respond to antibiotics. Once they get to this stage they get the typical “one big claw” appearance, break open and drain, and need to be surgically amputated. Sole abscess can be diagnosed by doing a good examination of the foot and finding the claw responsible, usually using hoof testers among other hoof trimming instruments. They are usually treated by trimming the foot and opening up the hoof capsule to facilitate drainage. Antibiotics will not treat routine sole abscesses. After the abscess is drained and the claws are trimmed, a wooden block is glued to the good claw to remove the abscessed claw from weight bearing. Therefore, Footrot caught early includes diffuse swelling and severe lameness, sole abscess have no swelling and severe lameness. Also, Footrot caught early responds to antibiotics, sole abscess
do not need antibiotics. Footrot caught late will have the characteristic enlarged pastern and claw on one side and will not respond to antibiotics and most need surgery. There is a condition called toe tip necrosis. This happens when wild cattle, usually young animals, spin out repeatedly on concrete or rough footing causing them to wear through the tip of their toe, causing a severe sole abscess- like condition. This results in death and infection of the coffin bone inside of the claw and most animals diagnosed have to be euthanized. Proper diagnosis and treatment of these conditions also prevents inappropriate use of antibiotics in our cattle. It is becoming very important to use antibiotics only when they are needed and effective. Too many lame cattle get a blanket treatment of antibiotics for Footrot when they don’t have Footrot. Therefore if you don’t see diffuse swelling, spreading of the claws, coupled with severe lameness you probably don’t have Footrot and it probably does not need antibiotics. If little or no swelling is present, take a closer look you probably have a sole abscess or something different. Call your veterinarian if you have any questions about a lameness in your cattle.

Broken finger cookies! Ingredients ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened ½ cup white sugar 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla pinch salt 1 ¾ cup all-purpose flour 2 tsp baking powder 2 Tbsp milk
2 Tbsp red cake-decorating sugar 20 whole blanched almonds OR 20 pieces banana chips Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. 2. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. 3. In bowl, using electric mixer, beat butter until fluffy. Gradually beat in sugar. Beat until mixture is no longer “scratchy” sounding against bowl. 4. Beat in egg, vanilla and salt. 5. In separate bowl, mix together flour and baking powder (tip for measuring flour: stir flour, spoon into measuring cup, then level).
6. Gradually beat flour mixture into butter mixture. 7. Switch to working in flour mixture with hands when dough gets too stiff to beat. 8. Knead into smooth dough. Roll into 3/4inch thick “ropes”. Break ropes into 3-inch sections. Pat one end smooth. Dip tip of other end of each piece into milk then red sugar. 9. Place on lined baking sheet. Pressing in sides of rope to prevent flattening, insert almond or piece of banana chip into rounded end. Repeat process to make 20 fingers. 10. Bake on middle rack of oven 17 minutes, or until dough is lightly golden.

Crispy phyllo wrapped hot dog mummies. Chilling. Ingredients 1 (16-oz) pkg bun-size hot dogs (8 hot dogs), each halved crosswise 2 oz Cheddar cheese, cut into 16 thin slices ½ tsp kosher salt ¼ tsp garlic powder ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper 8 sheets phyllo dough 4 oz (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted Ketchup, yellow mustard, barbecue sauce or your favorite dipping sauce, for serving and decorating Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 400ºF and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Cut a slit in each hot dog piece and stuff with a slice of cheese. Set aside. Combine the salt, garlic powder and pepper in a small bowl. 2. Working with one sheet of phyllo at a time and keeping the rest covered under a damp towel or
paper towels, lay a phyllo sheet on a large cutting board or counter and lightly brush with melted butter. Lightly sprinkle with some of the spice mix and fold in half lengthwise. Brush the top with more melted butter and cut into 1/2-inchthick strips. Using 2 pieces of stuffed hot dogs per phyllo sheet, wrap half of the strips around each piece of hot dog to create a mummy look. Leave a small section of hot dog exposed towards the top so it looks like the top part of the face peeking out from the phyllo wrappings. Don’t worry about frayed edges or tears-- it will add to the mummy look. 3. Place on the prepared baking sheet and repeat with the remaining phyllo, melted butter, spice mix and hot dogs. Remelt the butter if it cools down too much while forming the mummies. 4. Bake until the phyllo is crisp and golden brown, about 25 minutes. If desired, dot ketchup or mustard eyes on each mummy using a toothpick and serve with extra sauces for dipping.

beef, egg, bread cubes, onion, tomato, garlic, chili sauce, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Wash the peppers, and cut jacko’-lantern faces into the peppers with a sharp paring knife, making triangle eyes and noses, and pointyteeth smiles. Slice off the tops of the peppers, and scoop out the seeds and cores. Stuff the peppers lightly with the beef stuffing, and place them into the prepared baking dish so they lean against each other. Bake in the preheated oven until the peppers are tender and the stuffing is cooked through and juicy, about 1 hour.

6 bell peppers, any color 1 pound ground beef 1 egg 4 slices whole wheat bread, cubed 1 small onion, chopped 1 small tomato, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup chili sauce 1/4 cup prepared yellow mustard 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon salt

Call the someone, we have a zombie meatloaf! 1 1/2 pounds ground beef 1 small onion, finely chopped 3/4 cup buttery round crackers, crushed 2/3 cup milk 1/2 cup finely shredded sharp Cheddar cheese 2 eggs 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon seasoned salt 1 hard-boiled egg, cut in half
Sauce: 1/2 cup ketchup 1/4 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons barbeque sauce Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and grease the foil. Mix ground beef, onion, crackers,
milk, Cheddar cheese, eggs, Worcestershire sauce, and seasoned salt together in a bowl. Transfer beef mixture to the prepared baking sheet and form into a skull-shape, leaving holes for “eye sockets” and a “mouth”. Place hard boiled egg halves into the “eye sockets”, shaping the beef mixture around them to hold in place. Mix ketchup, brown sugar, and barbeque sauce together in a bowl until sauce is smooth. Spread 1/2 of the sauce onto the entire beef mixture, including the “eyes” and “mouth”. Bake in preheated oven until no longer pink in the center, about 50 to 60. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 160 degrees F (70 degrees C). Arrange the garlic pieces in the
mouth for the “teeth”. Brush the remaining sauce over the meatloaf or serve on the side. Notes Can be molded into any desired shape. Juices from ground beef may collect in the holes while baking and can be spread with a basting brush over the head after cooking contribute to the effect of “rotting flesh”. Dehydrated garlic chips can be found in health food stores in the bulk section. You may substitute sliced almonds or anything else that resembles teeth. You can do just one hard-boiled egg “eye”, if desired.

Tools to assess your ag business value
Knowing the economic value of your business is important – especially when it’s time to start succession planning. Whether you’re looking to assess the fair value of a business for sale or putting your own on the market, here are three common business valuation methods you should know. 1. Earning valuations Fair value is assessed according to a business’ likelihood of future earnings. Here, we look at a common method known as capitalization of earnings.
For example: A maple syrup farm has generated $200,000 in revenue every year for the past five years and has had annual expenses of $100,000. Its annual earnings are $100,000. We’ll assume there is no growth in average revenue on the horizon. Future earnings must be adjusted for the risk involved in the operation, the buyer’s aversion to risk and the opportunity cost of the investment in the business. For the sake of the argument, let’s assume the capitalization rate is 10%. That means the farm’s “earning value” valuation is $1million ($100,000/0.10 = $1,000,000) 2. Market valuations A market value approach compares the sales values of businesses similar in size, industry, comparable location, and when valuing ag operations, the land quality. This method works well, but only if comparison data is available. 3. Asset-based valuations
The liquidation method simply subtracts the value of a business’ liabilities from its assets, calculating how much cash the business would net by selling all tangible assets and paying off all liabilities. Asset-based valuations are seldom used to value healthy operations. While it’s often difficult to separate business from personal use of assets (e.g., aircraft used for aerial applications are often dualpurpose use), this valuation method is most often used to assess businesses being liquidated. Which valuation should you use? Other valuation methods exist, and most professionals tend to use more than one method. What’s most appropriate however varies by industry and business outlook. Whether looking to sell or buy a farm, plan for family succession, or trying to find new investors, business owners with a strong understanding of the business’ economic value are better situated to negotiate fair terms. Business owners should always consult with a professional before using the valuation tools above.

Handler responsibilities; there are some you know Often when we decide to train a dog it is just assumed that the dog needs to learn. The dog does need to learn in order to have a larger working role. However, it is the handler who has the largest learning curve. The dog starts with more knowledge

than the handler because he is born with an ability to read livestock and a working instinct. The handler is handicapped from the beginning as he has to learn this set of skills. There are a few options available for the handler to explore besides trial and error. Some choices

are: working with an experienced person, taking clinics, reading books or watching DVDs. Clinics are the fastest route to learning as they provide a view of different dogs at different levels of training. You may be starting a pup but it is also important to know the next stage of training when you go home and are working alone. Clinics provide this overall view the best. Clinics also allow you to build a network with people whose interests and goals are the same. Training dog and handler to a higher level of work takes a firm commitment on the part of the handler. Training progresses best on a daily basis. A dog that is worked for a few minutes every day will team and progress steadily as time is not continually spent going back and refreshing him and you on the last lesson learned. If a dog only has a lesson occasionally there is not a lot of progression as you spend most of the time reviewing previous lessons. The dog may be working at chores but that does not increase his knowledge base as quick as structured training sessions. The
best scenario for growth is to spend 10 minutes a day on training and use him doing chores the rest of the time. This will keep the dog learning as well as give him good solid practical work. The handlers skill will also grow with this formula white he teams how to keep control and communicate to the dog as new circumstances arise. If there is more time for training that will be even better. These days everyone seems to be short of time so this balance of training and practical work is doable Training yourself and a dog takes time. Getting help and making a firm commitment will be the starting point of success. It is important to find someone to work with and keep getting updates to stay on track. Developing bad habits can be hard to overcome so it is time and money well invested to keep moving forward rather than regressing. Carol Nelson 250-772-5315

Fertilizer prices working higher The long-term story of the nitrogen fertilizer market continues to develop. We saw what seems to be a five-year major rise in global production as countries and businesses arbitrage profit through a cheap natural gas price trend. We are probably in about year three or four of this. World demand growth for urea is about three million tonnes per year. I read a report that stated 2017 should bring on about an extra eight million tonnes of capacity from Iran, Algeria and the United States, which drops to 5.3 million tonnes in 2018, 5.7 million in 2019 and 3.8 million in 2020. I suspect demand growth also ramps up due to attrition and relatively low prices, such that there will be market equilibrium between supply and demand in about two years. United States urea imports are expected to shrink a further three million to stand at four to 4.5 million tonnes a year once all U.S. plants (new and expansion of existing facilities) are operational. This
means the traditional price arbitraging reference point of working New Orleans back to Western Canada, while still relevant today, becomes progressively diluted. Favourable for farmers With increased North American production, profit margins tighten and domestic competition increases. This suggests the prospect that a more favourable basis environment develops for consumer/farmers. As North America becoming progressively less reliant on global imports, we should also experience fewer supply disruptions that can cause prices to unexpectedly surge. Prices can still periodically spike when a nitrogen plant goes down - the same as we see with fuel prices when a petroleum refinery temporarily slows to cuts production. In the current market environment, retail urea prices appear to have bottomed for the season back in July, but still remain in the lower end of a two-year price range. Price gains may be attributable to prices falling too low for too long this
summer, to the point of violating manufacturing cost of production thresholds. That in turn, led to reducing supply. Of course, throw in a too bearish sentiment amongst the major players and change occurs. At mid-August, PFCanada suggested to its clients that risk/reward favoured securing future nitrogen fertilizer needs on the assumption that US$175 per short ton in New Orleans had minimal further downside potential. Depending on Canadian Prairie location and regional situation, the C$375 per tonne retail price level at the time favoured grower ownership, for all of 2018 needs if possible. As measured by the benchmark price set at New Orleans, the price of urea since firmed at about US$60 per short ton since the summer low. It now comes in at about $220 per ton. At Prairie retail, I hear reports of Saskatchewan retail urea prices moving up into the $410 to $420 per metric tonne range.

THE BIG BEND Talking the Ray Teghtmeyer family The spring of 62 was the beginning of the biggest change they would ever see in their lives. Ray and his brother Earl, and a handful of others took a trip to Blueberry Mountain to see about new homestead lands the government was opening up. It being wet, they never got to lay eyes on the land, but filed sight unseen on the land in Grande Prarie. The land was $306.25. They were surprised to see the homestead light of brush, only poplar and willow in December. The family began to arrive in April of 1963. This was the end of the road, only cutlines and an old oil road. After unloading the Cat, plowing and clearing began, the first thing done was to put up a tarp lean to, to stay in while the 12 by 12 shack was built. By end of July, we were busy building a 16 by 24 hour, working on on the few acres of cleared land, as well as putting up fences and fixing on the barn. By 1966, power arrived from Spirit River.
Above, homestead in 1962, left, Teghtmeyer children with a baby moose in 1963, below the homestead in ‘63 and 1975, from above.

Consultations open for beef processing sustainability indicators The Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) is looking for public input on how the sustainability of beef processing should be measured. “With guidance from a steering committee of diverse expertise, the CRSB has developed sustainability indicators for beef processing that supplement indicators for beef production,” says Cherie Copithorne-Barnes, chair of the CRSB. “I believe these indicators will provide the beef processing sector with the support to implement sustainable practices in their operations, and will assist the Canadian beef industry to meet consumer demand for programs that show our commitment to sustainable beef production.” The CRSB accepted input on their first draft of the beef processing sustainability indicators this summer. And after refining them, the group is asking for input on the updated version.
R0011343991
The scoring system is structured with five areas or principals of sustainability: natural resources, people and the community, animal health and welfare, food, and efficiency and innovation. “Committee members from across the beef value chain contributed diverse perspectives in identifying areas to support the beef processing sector in enhancing its practices across all five principles of sustainability,” says Page Stuart, an Alberta cattle feeder and co-chair of the committee that developed the indicators. “Based on feedback from the first consultation, indicators have been refined, and more detailed metrics across the three levels of the scoring system have been added.” The comment period will run from October 5 to November 4, 2017.

There were money raises such as donating homemade pies and doughnuts, then selling them with coffee at ball games. They embroidered flour sack squares with our name on them and made spreads to raffle off. During winter months, when only a few people stayed in the Valley, ladies would get together to make bandages for lepers and baby clothes for needy countries. Some were sent to Mexico. In 1962 the name change occurred changed Busy Bees to the Auxiliary, then to the Community Club.

Pulse Canada still waiting on word from India
The latest in a series of exemptions related to India’s fumigation requirement expired at the end of September. “We’re sitting here on the 4th of October and we haven’t heard from India what the policy will be for bills of lading that are dated October 1st or later,” noted Pulse Canada CEO Gordon Bacon on RealAg Radio on Wednesday. “We’re very hopeful we will hear today or tomorrow from India as to what the new policy will be.” Bacon is optimistic that India will continue to import pulses from Canada, the largest pulse exporter in the world. According to Saskatchewan Pulse Growers, the Indian government issued a six-month
extension in June relaxing fumigation requirements until the end of the year. However, Canada only received a threemonth exemption from additional inspection fees, which would apply to shipments leaving Canada as of October 1. If a new exemption isn’t granted, Bacon says it’s unclear how pulses shipped after October 1 will be treated. “We don’t know, and it’s hard to speculate, because India has policies in place for France and the U.S. that are different from some other countries, so India has a range of options,” he says. “I think we just have to be patient for a couple more days. We do expect to hear back from India as to what clarity will be, in terms of whether it’s from now to til the end of December, or as we’ve been asking for, some long-term clarity on what the import policy for Canadian pulses destined for India will be,” he said. BD Betty’s Port Alberni adventure continues My time in Port Alberni was rewarding. After partaking in a toy ride that saw well over 1,500 bikes come out (the official count was under 1,300), we pulled into the parking lot at the Glenwood Centre, everyone dropping of their toy and then off to buy tee shirts, get an adult beverage and a seat to watch the rodeo. The games were run with a precision I have not seen in years! Everyone in the stands were hooting and cheering the competitors on. Man does this toy run get crowd participation happening! There was no shortage on competition, these folks love their rodeo! During the Toy Run I was blown away by the number of signs thanking the riders for supporting their community. During the event that followed I was blown away by how much the community at large participates in what the committee hosts. The number of families and children that were present just made you smile - this is what a toy run should be. The guy that was cooking up the pig, a 200
pounder, had his son and a friend helping debone the meat and get it ready for the midnight luncheon at the toy run dance. He was handing out cracking like it was crack and people were gobbling it up - me included! He was also playing in the band Big Daddy for the dance! After the rodeo, I went back to the hotel for a bit to change footwear and ended up having wonderful conversations with a number of my Island friends. At 9:00PM I headed back over to the Glenwood Centre and the dance. They had two bands playing and both were really freaking good! I was shocked to see how many people were already there and dancing - the dance had only been on for a half hour or so! By the time I got done interviews the hall and the beer gardens were packed. Everyone was dancing, having fun. The Shuttle bus was busy making sure no one risked drinking and driving. There was one other rather interesting observation that I made.... all weekend long did I see
a police car or an officer other than for one walk through for the liquor permit. This event is attended by people who have great respect, there was not one harsh word, no one disagreeing or fighting, and I guess that means the police feel good about the precautions the Toy Run Committee takes and what transpires with the attendees! Port Alberni British Columbia on Vancouver Island is a must do for any rider, but if you love Toy Runs, the Port Alberni Toy Run is also a MUST do! You need to see for yourself why Port Alberni IS Canada’s MOST Rider Friendly Community! To see the interviews and video from the Toy Run, tune into Ride Like a Local on EastLink TV or YouTube in December! If you are blessed enough to be riding today, please ride like everyone around you is blind and cannot see you. Belt Drive Betty Editor & Rider
