You suspect spray drift ... now what? The Farmers’ Advocate Office (FAO) says that open communications are key when it comes to dealing with spray drift. “Spray drift is the aerial movement and unintentional deposit of pesticides outside of a target area,” says Jeana Schuurman, rural engagement and communications specialist, FAO. “When spray drift is suspected, we encourage landowners to start by documenting the details as much as possible to try and identify the source of the drift.”
sibility to ensure that their pesticide application does not cause harm to adjacent properties or people. Some landowners will opt to hire a customer applicator to help minimize their risk. “When spray drift occurs, we recommend opening the lines of communication as soon as possible. There are practices that can help minimize spray drift, such as creating buffer zones or spraying a lower wind speeds. It’s common for adjacent landowners to request a courtesy notice before their neighbour sprays.”
Spray drift can come from a variety of sources including adjacent landowners, municipalities, custom applicators, or industry.
More details on how to address suspected spray drift from municipalities, surface leases, and right of ways is available on the FAO website.
“The most common spray drift concern we receive is between adjacent landowners,” says Schuurman. “Landowners have a legal respon-

On-farm water management program drying up. Yep. As of this year, this program will enter its fifth and final year of operation. The program will terminate March 15, 2018. Grant applications to the program for completed projects, that were identified in an approved Long Term water Management Plan, must be received before then. Grants for projects in this final year are subject to budget availability. This program provides technical assistance to agricultural producers to complete a Long-Term Water Management Plan (LTWMP), and shares the cost of related enhancements of their on-farm water supply management. The Growing Forward 2 On-Farm Water Management Program (20132018) addresses two key industry priorities. Improved resource management. The program helps producers achieve greater water security and more effective and efficient management of their on-farm water resources, enhancing the sustainability of those resources. Improved production capacity. Producers who improve their water management capability advance the long-term competitiveness of their operation, making them better

able to embrace business opportunities Producers, corporations and notfor-profit organizations with an active agricultural business in Alberta and a minimum of $10,000 of farm commodity production income are eligible. An eligible on-farm water project can be located on private land, rented land, and certain types of Crown land subject to prior written approval from the landowner. All participants must have completed a Long-Term Water Management Plan (new or amended) and have it approved by an AF Water Specialist before starting a water project for their application to be considered eligible. LTWMPs that were approved during GF1 are still valid if they are accurate and identify the eligible water project you are interested in completing. The On-Farm Water Management Program shares costs relating to enhancements of a producer’s on-farm water supply management, arising from a Long-Term Water Management Plan (LTWMP). Additional On-Farm Water Management program information, is available on-line.For more information about the content of this document, contact Ag-Info Centre.
Meet your new BC Minister of Agriculture! In 1996, Lana made her home in Saanich South. She co-founded and operated Barking Dog Vineyard, the first certified organic vineyard on Vancouver Island. She also managed a crew of vineyard workers who took care of many vineyards on the Saanich Peninsula, and has been a strong advocate for food producers in Saanich for many years.
Lana was raised on Quadra Island in a do-it-yourself community, where growing food, raising animals and harvesting from the sea was a way of life.
Lana served on Saanich’s Planning, Transportation and Economic Development Committee and on the Peninsula Agricultural Commission. She was also president of the Vancouver Island Grape Growers Association, chair of the Certification Committee for the Islands Organic Producers Association, and a member of the Investment Agriculture Board.
Her interest in urban planning led her to UBC where she graduated with a degree in geography.
After being elected in 2009, Lana served as Opposition critic for agriculture for eight years.

Science Daily says researchers at North Carolina State University have found a specific gene in corn that appears to be associated with resistance to two and possibly three different plant leaf diseases. In a paper published this week in Nature Genetics, NC State researchers pinpoint the gene -caffeoyl-CoA O-methyltransferase -- that seems to confer partial resistance to Southern leaf blight and gray leaf spot, and possibly to Northern leaf blight, a trio of diseases that cripple corn plants worldwide. Finding out more about the mechanisms behind complex traits like disease resistance has the potential to help plant breeders build the best traits into tomorrow’s corn plants, says paper corresponding author Peter Balint-Kurti, a research plant pathologist and geneticist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agriculture Research Service (USDA-ARS) who is housed at NC State. Balint-Kurti’s group and colleagues identified several regions of the genome where genetic variation had a significant effect on variation in resistance to multiple diseases. “There were hundreds of genes in this region and identifying the specific genes affecting disease resistance was a challenge,” Balint-Kurti said. “It’s like looking for a particular restaurant in a city -- without Google to assist you.” Using an approach called fine mapping, NC State postdoctoral researcher Qin Yang winnowed the region down to a small segment of DNA carrying just four genes, and then with a number of collaborators from NC State, Iowa State University, the University of Delaware, Texas A&M University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Cornell University and the USDA Agricultural Research Service she performed more tests to narrow those four genes down to one. “It’s interesting that this gene also seems to be involved in lignin production,” Yang said. “Generally, more lignin production seems to be linked to more robust disease resistance in plants.” Balint-Kurti says the gene appears to confer a small but important disease-resistance effect. “It’s difficult to see these small effects, but it is also difficult for pathogens to adapt to counter them,” Balint-Kurti said. “Much of the resistance to Southern leaf blight and gray leaf spot is conferred by multiple genes that each have small effects.” Southern corn leaf blight is a moderate problem in the southeastern United States, BalintKurti says, and can be a significant problem in Southeast Asia, southern Europe and parts of Africa.

Summer anthrax outbreaks in cattle on pasture By Dr. Christa Harder Anthrax is a highly fatal disease that is caused by the bacteria called Bacillus anthracis. Although, anthrax has not been a significant problem in the Dawson Creek area, cases of anthrax have been reported in the Peace Country within the last 10 years. The most significant outbreak in Canada was reported in 2006 where approximately 800 animals died on over 150 farms in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The disease can affect many species of mammals, including humans; cattle and sheep seem to be more susceptible than horses and goats. Bacteria quickly (1-2 hours) turn into a spore form when exposed to air and can survive in the environment, especially alkaline soils, for decades. Anthrax outbreaks are more likely to occur during dry summer months: July, August and September. There is greater chance of anthrax outbreaks after heavy rain or flooding in spring that brings the spores to the surface and a drought later that causes cattle to graze close to the ground and pick up the spores. The spores are ingested from soil particles, dust on plants, or drinking water where the spores accumulate. Water or wind erosion, pipeline clearing, deep tilling of hay or crop land, or water sources can expose the spores. Infection occurs when spores are ingested, inhaled or penetrate the skin. Once in the

animal it takes about seven days for the anthrax bacteria to develop which then takes only a few hours to produce the deadly toxin. The first sign of disease is usually sudden death in otherwise healthy cattle. After death, a bloody discharge oozes from the mouth, nose and anus and there is often lack of rigor mortis (stiffness) since the blood does not clot in the body. The carcass of a dead animal is highly contagious however the bacteria needs oxygen to turn into the spore state therefore it is very important not to disturb or cut open the carcass. If suspected do not move the animal, cover it with a tarp to keep scavengers away and contact your veterinarian immediately. We are able to diagnose an-
thrax by taking samples of the oozing blood for laboratory conformation. Treating anthrax is rarely effective. The disease progresses very quickly, hence there is often insufficient time to start treatment before death. Anthrax can be prevented by vaccination. Annual vaccination is recommended for cattle and sheep 2-4 weeks before turning out on pasture and during disease outbreaks in endemic areas. To aid in the control of anthrax, it has been labelled as a federally reportable disease. All confirmed carcasses should be burned. If you have any further questions regarding anthrax please contact us at the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic.

Beef cattle feed study could lead to more efficient breeds SCcence Daily A change is coming to the cattle seedstock industry. Breed associations have long been interested in finding the genetic basis for feed efficiency, with the aim of breeding more efficient animals. But the first step -- accurately measuring how much cattle eat across different life stages and diet types -- has been a missing piece. A new study from the University of Illinois helps fill the gap. “Grain intake in the feedlot is relatively easy to measure and the industry now has a substantial number of feed intake records. But forage intake while a cow is grazing is extremely difficult to measure. We need to get a handle on that to really capture feed efficiency for the entire beef production system,” says Dan Shike, associate professor of beef cattle nutrition in the Department of Animal Sciences at U of I. The concern relates to the fact that intake regulation varies depending on diet type. In other words, a cow can fill up on forages before meeting her basic nutritional requirements. The same cow being fed grain in a controlled setting like a feedlot will likely meet those requirements on less feed. However, feed intake evaluations are typically done in the feedlot, potentially misrepresenting the efficiency of the animal over her lifespan. “Prior to our study, there were limited data evaluating the relationship of intake on a grain
diet with intake on a forage diet. If they are related, we may be able to use the intake data we have from the feedlot to extrapolate throughout the cow’s life,” Shike explains. Shike and a large team of collaborators from 11 institutions set out to determine if there was a relationship between feed efficiency in foragefed cattle and in grain-fed cattle. Both heifers and steers were fed out of a GrowSafe system, which precisely tracks intake to individual animals. Heifers were fed forage during a growing period of 70 days, then switched to grain for a 70-day finishing period. Steers were fed grain for both periods. The team looked for relationships between dry matter intake and average daily gain in the two periods, and found a strong correlation for both heifers and steers for dry matter intake. “The study suggests that dry matter intake is repeatable across varying stages of maturity and diet types in cattle, and accurate feed efficiency measures can be obtained in either the growing or finishing period,” Shike says. “And our results show that measures of dry matter intake and feed intake in heifers are relevant, no matter what they were fed.” The team also analyzed the data by breaking
the intake evaluation period into smaller chunks. “We found that intake evaluation periods can be shortened from the standard 70 days. We’re not suggesting going clear down to 7 or 14 days, but I think you could go from 70 to 42,” he says. Some breed associations are already adopting a shorter feed intake evaluation period as a result of this and other work. Having more information about feed intake can lead to a more economical operation. Raising more efficient animals can reduce feed waste and potentially increase profits. The article, “Effects of timing and duration of test period and diet type on intake and feed efficiency of Charolais-sired cattle,” is published in the Journal of Animal Science. The project was supported by a USDA NIFA grant, and the study’s authors include researchers from the National Program for Genetic Improvement of Feed Efficiency in Beef Cattle, as well as associated graduate students and staff.

Mustard: the little seed on the prairie Starting with only 40 hectares of mustard crops in Alberta in 1936, Canada has now become the world’s largest exporter of this ancient condiment. How? Simple: the Canadian prairies have ideal conditions for the drought-resistant, cool-weather crop. Today, research is focussed on producing varieties fine-tuned for improved nutritional benefits. The hub for much of this research is the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre. Here, scientists have created new yellow and brown mustard varieties with reduced oil and increased protein content.

Ingredients
Cdn. strong mustard (Dijon style) 10 ml Cdn. whole grain mustard 20 ml White wine (Riesling) 200 ml Wild leek or shallots 1/4 cup Butter 1 tablespoon 15 ml Rye whisky 1 tablespoon 15 ml Turmeric a pinch Thyme a few sprigs Chicken or vegetable broth (unsalted) 3/4 cup + 1 tablespoon Cream (35%) 3/4 cup + 1 tablespoon Salt to taste. Grilled mustard seeds to taste
Canadian mustard’s uses extend far beyond food, as well. From environmentally friendly pesticides, to a bio-diesel additive, to a natural fertilizer, the world will soon see even more advanced applications for Canadian mustard. But don’t fret: making sure hot dogs and hamburgers have that extra zip will always be a top priority. Canada is the world’s largest producer of mustard seed. The United States is Canada’s largest market accounting for nearly 55% (67,500 metric tonnes per year) of Canada’s total mustard seed exports.
Melt butter in a frying pan, and sauté the wild leek or shallots until soft. Add rye whisky, then the white wine, a pinch of turmeric and the sprigs of thyme. Reduce to 3/4 and add the chicken or vegetable broth. Reduce once again to half the volume. Add cream and bring to a boil. Remove the pan from the heat and remove the sprigs of thyme. Whisk in the two mustards. Taste for seasoning and serve hot. Garnish with mustard seeds.

Cedar planked salmon with cucumber noodles Ingredients (salmon) Cedar plank 1, 15 × 36 cm Salmon fillets 680 g total Dijon mustard 90 ml Brown sugar 6 tablespoons 90 g Salt and ground pepper to taste Ingredients (cucumber noodles) Seedless cucumbers, peeled 3 Unsalted butter
2 tablespoons
Mint, finely chopped 2 tablespoons Salt 1/2 teaspoon Black pepper 1/4 teaspoon Lemon zest 1/2 teaspoon Fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon Method (salmon) Soak the cedar plank in salted water, then drain. Remove skin from salmon fillets. Rinse salmon under cold water and pat dry with paper towel. Generously season both sides of the salmon with salt and pepper. Lay the salmon skin side down on the cedar plank. Spread mustard on the salmon fillets. Generously sprinkle the brown sugar over the mustard. Set half the barbeque grill on medium/high heat. Place the cedar plank salmon on the grill away from the heat, cover the grill
and cook 20-30 minutes until cooked through. Internal temperature should read 275°F/135°C. Serve with a side of cucumber noodles. Method (cucumber noodles) Cut each cucumber into long 1/8 inch julienne strips. Slice until the core is reached, then rotate in ¼ turns, slicing until nothing is left but the core. Blanch cucumber noodles in boiling salted water for 1 minute, and then drain in a colander. Immerse noodles into a large bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. Drain cucumber noodles and transfer to a clean kitchen towel to pat dry. Heat butter in a heavy skillet on moderate heat until foam subsides. Cook cucumber noodles, zest, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Toss the noodles to mix well. Serve immediately. Quick tip You can purchase reusable cedar planks or thin one-time versions at cookware and grill stores or simply go to a lumberyard and ask to have untreated cedar board cut into lengths long enough for a salmon fillet.

2017-2026 ag outlook emphasizes “weak” growth Some good news from the OECD-FAO last week: World demand for oilseeds will continue growing. Their newly released 2017-2026 Agricultural Outlook emphasizes “weak” growth throughout the outlook period. But, how weak is “weak?” Crop markets have shown a remarkable strength that pushed Canadian farm revenues to record highs in 2016. Canadian producers remained profitable as new players entered the market, world stocks soared and prices declined. In this context, “weakening” growth loses some of its sting. That said, a waning market warrants your attention. After having read the Outlook, I think three opportunities and challenges are of particular importance for Canada: 1. China’s insatiable appetite for oilseeds China’s demand for oilseeds has been the single biggest driver of the global crop markets over the last decade. Chinese imports of soybeans climbed 314% between 2006 and 2016, a pace they’ll likely maintain.
Projections from the last ten years show that in 2007, the OECDFAO expected China’s oilseeds imports to top 47.7 million metric tonnes (MMT) in 2017 (Figure 1). And even with evidence of the increasing rate of growth of Chinese consumption, the projections done in 2012 still grossly underestimated import levels in 2017 – by 20 million MMT. 2017’s forecast for the current year effectively doubles initial projections. Chinese imports are now forecast to be 93.6 MMT in 2017. 2. Biofuel production still trending up; share of corn used for ethanol declining If China’s love of oilseeds was the story of the past decade, it replaced the story of biofuels as a key driver in the first decade of the new millennium. Corn-based ethanol production in the U.S. climbed from 6.2 million gallons in 2000 to 10.6 billion gallons in 2010. Corn-harvested acreage grew 12% which, combined with higher yields, increased corn production 26% - all of which went to ethanol production. But even this
on the assumption of a 1.5% increase in acres, while Ukraine’s 13% growth is expected to require an additional 2.1% area devoted to wheat. These numbers suggest the OECD-FAO expects a big jump in Ukraine’s yields over the next ten years. Productivity key to keep Canada’s longterm outlook positive
increase couldn’t meet the new demand; between 2000 and 2010, feed usage and corn exports also declined in efforts to grow ethanol production. Going forward, expect ethanol-related demand for grains to stabilize. The OECDFAO expects by 2020, U.S. growth in cornbased ethanol will still be positive, but much slower (less than 1% annually). Weaker demand for gasoline is expected to reverse that growth slightly between 2022 and 2027. In contrast, Brazil’s sugar-based ethanol production may jump more than 20% over this period. 3. Canadian leadership in wheat exports to be tested
BENWYN FARM LTD. PROGRESS, BC V0C 2E0
Canadian wheat exports are expected to grow 6% by 2026 compared to the 2015-2017 average. Based on a projected 7% growth in wheat production to 2026, our export growth will fall behind that of the EU, the U.S., Russia and, most notably, Ukraine. Ukraine’s exports are expected to increase 15% by 2026. That growth reflects, in part, a relative lack of Ukrainian capacity to process raw commodities. When domestic processing is unable to keep up to production, the excess must be exported. Unlike Canada, where some additional production will be absorbed into domestic processing, the expected 13% increase in Ukrainian production will mostly

go to exports. The sources of production increases will also differ. The 7% Canadian growth is based
Currently a leading exporter of grains and oilseeds, Canada will maintain its elite ranking only with efforts to enhance productivity to meet growing demand amidst growing competition in export markets.

Environment contributes to abilities think and team. Another example is a dog that spends most of his time with other dogs. The other dogs become the focus in life as they are fun to be with and life is a hoot. When you start to work these pups, and put some rules in their life they woutd rather go play with the other dogs. The above dogs may have good working genetic abilities but they are a product of their environment. Their work habits will be shoddy and they may never reach their potential because the instinct was not nurtured and grown. The handler whose dog is great is likely because he has spent the time with the dog in a constructive manner long before it was time to start working stock.

A conversation that comes up on a regular basis is when people are discussing a pup or young dogs abilities. One person may be completely happy with their dog and its working while another may feel their dog is not very interested in work or is lacking. At this point the conversation usually comes around to where the dog was purchased and who the parents were, etc. This does play a large factor in who and what the dog is. However, if the dog has working lineage and you liked what you saw with the parents work, there is maybe a more logical explanation for the pups lack of desire. The hardest thing in life is to look at ourselves and say we may not be doing our end as well as we should. Not doing our end may not be done intentionally but rather be the product of not thinking about how our actions may be affecting the pup. An example of this is a pup that has been kenneled a lot. He may be well looked after in terms of necessary items such as food and water ,but there is nothing to stimulate his mind and curiosity. I compare this with putting us in a cell surrounded by four walls with nothing to do all day. How long until we lost our zest and zeal for life. The less one does in life the less one feels like doing. Why would it be any different for a dog. We breed them for their physical and mental talents and then we expect them to sit and do nothing until they are old enough to work. This often catches up down the road when we need the dog to

Weather worries rally oilseed markets
Winnipeg canola futures have rallied impressively over the past two weeks as concerns mount about how adverse weather will affect crop production across Western Canada. In addition, speculative fund buying amid short covering in front-month canola contracts has
also served to lift futures. A notable rally in Chicago soybean and soyoil futures during this same period of time fed the bullish vibe of oilseed markets, reacting to its own concerns about hot and dry conditions in the western U.S. Midwest and northern U.S. Plains
states, along with the extended outlook for hot and dry conditions to continue. November canola futures surged up to $530 per tonne (July 10), up $57 per tonne ($1.29 per bushel) from the June 22 bottom. Traders are growing increasingly concerned about an expanding region of excessive heat as the canola crop enters its flowering stage of development. As long as this condition continues, trade sentiment on crop size shrinks daily. Ironically, central and northern Alberta has been battling excessive wet conditions, so the yield potential is apt to be quite variable across the Canadian Prairies. November canola this week has now tested the market’s upper-end trading range which has held firm for better than two years now in the $530 to $540 per tonne zone. The widely volatile weather markets, though, resulted in a dramatic sell-off of all grains and oilseeds following a bearishly-viewed supply and demand report released by the United States Department of Agriculture and shifting weather forecasts. Chicago soybean futures have also powered aggressively higher these past two weeks amid weather concerns of their own, until selling off after Tuesday. While eastern ar-
eas of the U.S. Midwest have been reasonably well-watered, conditions remain generally hot and dry further west and the extended outlook calls for hot and dry conditions across the U.S. Corn Belt. Chartwise, November beans gapped above the $10.20 per bushel level to finish at $10.39 (July 10) and briefly traded above the November 2016 high. Of note to this date, November beans have rallied more than a $1.32 from the June low, before pulling back to $10 a bushel. The managed money spec fund crowd is still net short bean futures and the end user is not well covered. With a ridge pattern potentially setting up, it brings in hot/dry conditions in the long range forecast. At some point large U.S. old crop stocks, record South American crop production and mostly favourable foreign crop conditions will assume centre stage. But for the hereand-now, the trade is more worried about deteriorating U.S. yield potential. Wednesday’s (July 12) supply/demand report from USDA could generate fresh impetus to at least temporarily drive market direction one way or the other, but weather issues will continue to dominate trader actions for July into August.

TALES, TRAILS & GUMBO
Stories and recollections from the settlers of Cotillion, Silver Valley & Fourth Creek
R0011314306
30 The Northern Horizon, August 4, 2017
The Homecoming, 1987 by A. Dolan We came from many provinces, some across the sea, sharing one dream in common, landowners we must be. The Peace River country called us with miles of virgin land “come here, would-be farmers, build a future with your hands.” For some dreams soon faded fate beckoned elsewhere for the earth only yields riches to those who really care. For those who facing challenges
the road was long and rough we can all tell tales of hardships that made us cry, “Enough!” Forest gives way to farmland, now fields wave grain, large tractors, combines like ships across the plain. Now younger generations steps into dusty shoes facing a different challenge, pray they do not lose. As we gather to enjoy, reminisce, let’s give thanks and all blessing, God surely had a hand in this.

Kevin Kulak 1.888.686.4407 PEACE COUNTRY SALES REP:
The Big Bend is dedicated to the pioneers who changed the face of this area from timber and Parkland wilderness to a prosperous farming community. “We acknowledged the work done by all who responded to requests for stories and pictures as without these there would be no history of “The Big Bend’, said Wilma K Bird upon publication of the book. Bird took time to note sponsors as well, the Blueberry Mountain Goodwill Society and Big Bend
Historical Committee, which was formed specifically for the Big Bend publication. “We hope our combined efforts with with your approval as you read The Big Bend.” After WWI, the government allowed each veteran a half section of land, so many of the first settlers of Blueberry Mountain were veterans. “This book is a history of the opening up of the country - a permanent record of our past.”

Considering an off-farm gig? Questions to ask
Ever want to have a business outside of farming? It could be a great way to learn new skills, earn extra income and keep busy at times when farming’s quiet. Back in 2003, Drumheller, Alta. grain farmer Gary Chambers was looking for something beyond the farm. He settled on real estate. Today, the farm’s as successful as ever and Chambers is a well-known real estate agent in the area. What made his decision the right one? Looking back, he thinks you can put your potential sidegig to the test by asking these three questions. 1. How well does it work for the farm?

Chambers is the fourth generation of a family farm that’s well over a century old. No way was he willing to risk the farm for a new venture. As he sees it, to be sustainable, a side-gig must respect the times when you need to be in the field. “You might have a big grain truck and be able to haul grain as a business,” Chambers says. “The problem is: everyone wants their grain hauled at the exact time you’re busy with harvest.” Chambers manages his real estate business remotely during seeding and harvest. His clients know he farms and his real estate colleagues can cover the occasional open house if Chambers can’t be there. Once harvest is done, Chambers can devote his full energy to selling houses. It’s a good fit. 2. What grabs you about it? “If it’s just a job, it’s not going to work,” Chambers says. “If you’re looking at a second occupation, it has to be something you’re passionate about and good at. A lot of grain farmers do something with livestock because it’s a fit for the farm, but I didn’t like working with animals.” On the other hand, Chambers had a sales background, enjoyed sales and liked working with people. Real estate ticked this box too. 3. What’s your total investment? To get going in real estate, Chambers needed to get his real estate licence and set up an office. Compared to farming, the financial investment was modest but his investment of time was significant. Before you press play on your side business, be sure you understand what it’ll take to succeed. If you can follow your interests, make some money and still put farming first, why not go for it? Farmer and realtor Gary Chambers is glad he did. “You definitely want to go into it with a solid business plan,” he says. “This will help you decide if you’re willing to part with a few dollars and invest your time in that opportunity.” From an AgriSuccess article (June 2017) by Kieran Brett

Straight shooting, the oat market stable and supported I have not touched on the oat market in some time, but Chicago oat futures rallied sharply through June and July. However, in my opinion, that marketplace no longer serves as a good proxy for what is happening in the Prairie cash market. Still for interest sake, Chicago oat futures are currently trading at 2.5 year highs. Cash prices hold steady While Prairie cash oat bids saw modest improvement from the spring into the summer market, they have in no way been as explosive as the Chicago Board of Trade oat futures gains. In fact, cash prices held steady in the last few weeks with a few buyers still floating around at $3 per bushel picked up at the farm in the southeast part of Saskatchewan. Ceres at Northgate appears to be the best in Saskatchewan at $3.15 to $3.20 a bushel.
crop acreage contracts surface.
United States miller inventory is low and they reportedly have a big first half 2017/18 import program in the works normal demand attrition smaller U.S. oat crop (100,000 few harvested acres and a return to lower more normal yield) expectation that if Canada 2017 quality is decent, millers will choose to build-up reserves, especially knowing the price of spring wheat and malt barley will create strong competitors for acreage in spring 2018. New crop 2018 oats in northeastern Saskatchewan should be all of $3 per bushel when new

Prices, of course, weaken the farther you move to the north and west in the province. Similar advertised bids at that top end are seen in the Red River Valley of Manitoba. Overall though, a rather ho-hum trending market.
Bottom line The story in oats is dependent on weather, much like all grain markets at this time of year, but sprinkled in are crop quality considerations and the transportation logistics to move product in a timely fashion. Mike Jubinville of Pro Farmer Canada offers information on commodity markets and marketing strategies. Call 204-654-4290 or visit www.pfcanada.com to find out more about his services.

Key regions hold steady Most of the key oat growing region of Western Canada(essentially up and down the Yellowhead Highway from western Manitoba to Edmonton) are in stable or even improving condition. Thus our bias is to still use trend type yield expectations at this time, with normal acreage abandonment rates when sizing up production potential. At this time, we judge Canadian oat crop potential for 2017 in the area of 3.53 million tonnes, and we will adjust according to evolving weather developments. To come to such a forecast, we use seeded acreage of 3.22 million acres as per the latest Statistics Canada projection, acreage abandonment of 20 per cent (normal) and a trend type yield of 89 bushels per acre.

Why detecting disease in your cattle herd is an art
A southern Alberta veterinarian says they are seeing an increase in the number of farmers they have to train on how to diagnose and treat sick calves. Dr. Steve Hendrick, from Coaldale, says this is a result of changing demographics with fewer people growing up in livestock agriculture. “More and more we are training people that have no previous livestock exposure and suddenly they are in a new position where they have to identify these, so we work and train, to help mentor and guide them through that process to do their jobs,” Hendrick said. Experience counts Hendrick believes the ability to pick out which calves are sick early
on is an art, which seasoned livestock handlers can do easily. “Lameness is something that is a little more obvious, but there are some other disease conditions that are tougher to pick up external signs, a lot of it takes a lot of training and mentorship to know what to look for and a lot of it is knowing what abnormal behaviour in cattle is.” A point that’s not lost on Soderglen Ranches cattle manager Jared Sherman.
cluding how they normally behave and their habits when they start to become sick. Good and bad days “Just seeing those cattle when they are healthy, some of those subtleties they won’t pick up on until symptoms become very severe and that is when damage has been done and you start to run into death-loss problems,” said Sherman. “It really
takes some time, some coaching and experience to be able to identify symptoms of cattle early on.” Bottom line While time and experience are valued for early disease detection in cattle, new entrants in the industry recognize they need education and are taking steps to learn more about their livestock from professionals.
Sherman says while they ensure everyone working on their ranch has a solid understanding of the science, it’s the amount of experience and time spent with the cattle day in and day out that truly allows them to understand their herd, in-

Organic producers promote need for standards uptake OWEN ROBERTS Organic producers are calling for new measures to promote uniform standards across the country, to advance the sector and compete against imports. In a new report, The State of Organics: Federal-Provincial-Territorial Performance Report 2017, the Organic Council of Canada says a lack of uniformity is hurting Canadian producers. Imports with an advantage In particular, it says inconsistent organic standards across provinces gives organic imports a leg up, and stymies organic production here. “Limited and unequal” support for organic agriculture across the country has put Canadian organic businesses at “a serious disadvantage,” it says. Provincial regulations The council wants provinces to regulate the term organic and adopt the Canadian organic standards approved by the federal government seven years ago. Only four provinces have done so - British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Quebec, the country’s leader in organic production, created its own standards before the national standards were created. Quebec has since adopted the federal standards. Ontario, the province with the biggest organic consumer base, has not adopted national standards. Any organic products that are traded solely within the province can use the word organic without certifying. Carolyn Young, lead consultant with the Organic Council of Ontario, is hoping that will change. “We are seeking an Ontario regulation that would adopt the federal standards but also create a provincial program to support small-scale producers,” she says. Production lagging Many believe disparities in organic legislation are holding the sector back. Production in Canada is lagging; despite steady consumer demands, just one to two per cent of Canadian farm production is organic. Compare that to Europe, where several countries have national organic plans and the Common Agricultural Policy helps fund transition from conventional to organic.
For example, France, which already has 4.5 per cent of its farms in organic production, has plans to raise that figure to 10 per cent by 2021. France has seen a 30 per cent increase in the number of organic operations in the past five years, with land in organic production growing to 1.5 million hectares, a 50 per cent increase. Likewise, the United States, where about four per cent of the total acreage is organic, a national effort encourages transition, provides organic extension and funds standards maintenance. In Canada, industry pays for its own updates in standards. Uneven standards Ontario organic council president and family farmer Tom Manley says uneven standards between provinces lead to a lack of consumer confidence. People can’t be sure what constitutes organic from border to border, he says. “Consumers are confused by unverified organic claims,” he says. “And conventional farmers who might want to switch over to organic production are reluctant to do so, as long as regulatory confusion remains.”
