Breakfast Brief NEW TRADE DEAL (IRONICALLY) DOESN’T HELP GRAIN PRICES

(FarmLead.com, January 17, 2020) Grain prices are mixed this morning as trade deal headlines swirl and the complex (especially soybean prices) tries to rebound from the last few down days of trading. To the obvious eye, the trade deal signed between China and the U.S. on Wednesday should’ve been a positive for grain and commodity prices in general, but the complex as faltered with many questioning the vague language and corresponding math (more on this in a bit). Also in the new trade deal camp, the U.S. Senate overwhelming passed the new trade agreement between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, or the USMCA.Unsurprisingly, the new North American-wide trade deal was praised by most agriculture groups. This leaves only Canada to sign the new North American trade deal, but it should be known that the Canadian Parliament is not back in session until the last week of January. Not really moving soybean prices was Wednesday’s NOPA crush report from December 2019, which showed 174.8M bushels of soybeans were used. That was about 3.2M bushels more than the pre-report average guesstimate from analysts and it was also good for a 1.8% over what was used in December 2018.That said, through the first 4 months of the 2019/20 marketing year, the total crush volume is about 0.6% behind last year’s pace, whereas the USDA is targeting 0.6% growth from 2018/19. In the wheat complex, some warmer weather in the U.S. Southern Plains could inadvertently restart the growth of the winter wheat crop in the region. While this is bullish for new crop 2020/21 winter wheat prices, I’m reminded by the record carryout of wheat around the world, and how that might cap any significant rally (at least above what we’ve already seen over the last few months). Does the U.S.-China Trade Deal Mean Much?

If we’re looking at the language of the Chinese-U.S. Phase One trade deal signed on Wednesday, it’s very ambiguous. In Chapter 6 of the deal, item 5 states that “The Parties acknowledge that purchases will be made at market prices based on commercial considerations, and that market conditions, particularly in the case of agricultural goods, may dictate the timing of purchases within any given year.”Basically, it’s been argued that in this trade deal, China basically agreed to buying American whenever they feel like it.While many of us can agree that this new trade deal should be bullish for soybean prices, the opposite has happened in the past few days of trading since the trade was signed. So what the heck is going on? In my opinion, Todd Hultman of DTN has done the best job of digging into the math around the trade deals, specifically as it relates to Chinese purchasing of American soybean exports.Mr. Hultman explains that China, in past years, has never spent more than 51% of total U.S. import spend on soybeans. That said, while current soybean prices at the port are sitting around $10 USD/bushel as per the DTN chart below, one could generously assume that as China buys more America, soybean prices could theoretically improve. If that’s the case, then U.S. soybean prices would likely trade much higher than the $10 USD/ bushel they’re at now, as Mr. Hultman points out. Higher soybean prices in the U.S. should also drive Brazilian soybean prices higher, but that’s far from a certainty. That said, if we assume a bullish increase to $11/bu for an average price in 2020 and at 51% of total spend of the suggested $36.5 Billion would mean about 1.69 billion bushels bought by China (or about 46 MMT of soybeans if converting bushels into metric tonnes).Worth noting is that U.S. 2019/20 soybean exports through Week 19 are tracking 24% higher year-over-year with 23.24 MMT sailed so far.

Legault elected to National Farmers Union Fort St. John has a seat at the table at the National Farmers Union. Bess Legault was elected by acclamation as Women’s Vice-President for the NFU at its 50th anniversary convention in Winnipeg Nov. 24 to 27. Legault is a first-generation farmer and the owner/operator/educator of Hip Peace Produce, which has been operating at Bear Flat the last four years and producing more than 131 varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Legault also leads the Northern Co-Hort, a part of the Northern Environmental Action Team working to address food security challenges in the Peace region and grow the local food economy. The NFU is a membership based group made up of Canadian farm families working to develop “economic and social policies that will maintain the family farm as the primary food-producing unit in Canada.” Katie Ward of Woodlawn, Ont., was re-elected by acclamation as president. Results of the national officers elections are as follows: Katie Ward of Woodlawn, ON, ac-

claimed as President Coral Sproule of Perth, ON, acclaimed as Women’s President Stuart Oke of Saint-Andre-Avellin, QC, acclaimed as Youth President Glenn Norman of Red Deer County, AB, acclaimed as First VicePresident (Policy) Stewart Wells of Swift Current, SK acclaimed as Second Vice-President (Operations) Bess Legault, of Fort St John, BC acclaimed as Women’s Vice-President Jessie MacInnis of Tatamagouche, NS, acclaimed as Youth Vice-President

Mr. Hultman argues that the more likely guesstimate of the percentage of total spend that China uses on soybeans could be closer to 40%, not 51%. Theoretically, the number of bushels that China buys from the U.S. with this trade deal in place would then be likely closer to 1.33 billion bushels of soybeans (or 36.2 MMT). This would be closer to the value and tonnage of U.S. soybean exports bought by China in 2016, but still a very high number (albeit certainly more bullish than what I suggested in my 2020 soybean prices outlook!) in today’s trade environment. The Impact of the Trade Deal on Everyone Else

All things being equal, if the Chinese start to buy more American, despite prices being cheaper elsewhere, there may be a case for a World Trade Organization challenge. Brazilian or Canadian soybean exporters could arguably make a case that the U.S. has an unfair advantage for trade with China. However, I suspect the language in the trade deal mentioned above is intentionally written vaguely so as to combat any challenges at the WTO level. SIdenote: more global trade players are even questioning the credibility of the WTO anymore thanks to the U.S. dropping funding of its Appellate Body and stalling the selection process for filling six judicial vacancies on it. While the signing of the trade war deal has largely been centered around soybeans, as mentioned in Wednesday’s FarmLead Breakfast Brief, soybean and canola prices are facing some challenges from its main substitute: palm oil. A recent decision by India to restrict palm oil imports from Malaysia will likely disrupt tradeflows of all vegetable oils.Put another way, to make up for the reduction in palm oil from Malaysia, India may import more canola oil from Canada, more soy oil from the U.S., Brazil, or Argentina, or even more sunflower oil from the Black Sea. India could also just import more palm oil from Indonesia. Speaking of India, make sure to dig into my outlook for pulses in 2020 on the FarmLead Insights page!

Larry Yaremcio, beef and forage specialist at the Alberta Ag-Info Centre, says to start by adjusting rations to meet requirements, as there is a limit to the amount of heat cattle can produce by digesting feed. “Cattle can stay warm down to -20 C without wind chill, and the heat from digestion when they consume their feed will keep them warm. I am referring specifically to cattle, but these principles apply to other animals that are staying outside.” It is a natural response for animals to eat more feed when it gets cold. Provide extra hay or silage along with extra grain. Feed intake changes when the temperature drops below -20 C. “You can’t just let them pick extra hay or pick straw off the bedding pack to make up the intake differential,” he adds. “Straw is a low protein, high fibre, low energy feed that takes a long time for the animals to digest. If they eat extra straw, the total protein content in the ration goes down, and bacteria can’t digest the fibre. In reality, their feed intake in reality may drop 2, 3 or 4 pounds a day, and the animals will drop condition by eating only extra straw.” “At -30 C, increase grain intake by an extra 2 lb of grain per head per day over and above what was previously being fed at -20 C. If temperatures drop to -40 C, 4 lb of extra grain per head per day needs to be added.” Thin animals get cold faster than those that are in good shape, as they do not have the fat

layer that provides insulation. “The recommendation of 4 lb of additional grain during the cold weather might have to be stepped up to 6 or 7 lb to maintain their body weight or hopefully get them to gain a little bit,” he explains. “It is difficult to do in cold weather but it is possible.” Next, producers need to be concerned with the protein content of the ration. “If the ration’s protein content is not adequate, the microbial populations cannot reproduce efficiently, as some of those microbes are needed to digest the fibre in the feeds. If the fibre is not digested efficiently, feed intake will be reduced, restricting the amount of nutrients the animal is getting.” He says that one way to evaluate the protein content of the ration is to look at the manure. “If the ration contains adequate amounts of protein for proper rumen function, the ‘pats’ will be flat and appear normal. If the ration is deficient in protein, the pats will be more pyramid shaped and be rough in appearance.” Providing shelter behind a wind fence and providing a lot of bedding helps reduce the amount of energy needed for an animal to keep warm. If possible, move the thinnest animals into a barn to protect them from the weather. “A cow laying on snow could potentially lose 25% of her body heat, especially if that snow is wet or the animal has a dirty hair coat.” He adds that the implications of not lessening the stress from cold temperatures could compromise the animals. “During cold weather, cows can lose anywhere between 1 to 3 lb a day. If the cow is losing weight in the last trimester of pregnancy, there could be more calving difficulties because the cow’s muscles are not as strong as they should be. Nutrient requirements for a lactating cow increase by 25% compared to one in late pregnancy. That is when the large weight losses can occur.” “Colostrum quantity – and possibly quality – will be compromised if the cow is losing weight prior to calving. The calf may not be as healthy or get up as rapidly after birth if the cow has lost weight in the cold weather. You could have a few more problems with disease. A cow with very little fat reserve will not be able to produce as much milk as one that is in good condition. The growth rate of the calf could probably reduce as well. Long term, if that cow stays skinny all the way through lactation, reproductive efficiency can be reduced by 20 to 30%.”

Biting, kicking and ear pinning I’m amazed that to some people, horses pinning their ears at other horses, even when they are being ridden, is quite common and accepted. A horse that pins its ears at another horse or even at people is a horse that is threatening to do more like kick, bite or strike. As the owner of a horse that is threatening other horses or people, it should not be ok or acceptable in any way. Some people will say that the horse is just worried, nervous, uncomfortable or unconfident. So does that mean if we feel any of those things we can start biting and kicking other people if we are uncomfortable? Of course not! It is important to know the reason why a horse feels it needs to have those behaviors so we can help change them. But regardless of what the reason is, it is our job as an owner, rider or handler to put an end to it. That type of behavior says that the horse is the leader and they barely know that their handler exists. The horse’s mind is not with the person that is supposed to be in charge. It is our job to make sure our horse knows that it cannot threaten other people – ever, and never other horses when they are with us. They can kick high enough to break a person’s leg even in the saddle when they are trying to kick your horse. If our horse is threatening others when we are with them, we need to do something to change what it is thinking at that moment when it is having the thought such as touching a rein, moving a hip or shoulder. Generally, the ear pinning horse will look towards the other horse. That is when you could pick up a rein and tip his nose back where it is supposed to be. Sometimes they stand there looking straight ahead with their ears pinned when a horse goes by. The sooner you can do something to get your horse’s mind on you and not the other horse the better. Catch it when it’s small and the correction can be smaller. Be consistent don’t allow ear pinning at other horses or people ever. You’re not trying to punish your horse, just change its mind about things and do enough so that it’s uncomfortable for it to have that thought.

horses. Ride the horse that has the issue up to the horse or horses that don’t have issues. Getting closer and closer stopping every step to allow them to see that they are fine, until you can stand stirrup to stirrup. Get the other rider to rub your horse and you can rub theirs. It seems to help solve the issue quicker. You can tie them near another horse and if anybody starts trouble give them a little flick with a rope or string to say mind your manners and don’t start fights with the other horses. If your horse kicks at other horses that ride up behind it, yield your horse’s hip with a purpose if it tries to kick. There will usually be other signs before it kicks like ear pinning; that’s when the rider needs to pick up a rein or do something to interrupt the thought and let them know it’s not ok to even think about it. A horse that is acting that way is no fun, is taking over and is dangerous to other riders. The good news is that it is easy to fix with the right timing and some consistent corrections. NORTHWAY

Annual Bull and Select Female Sale • 1st Friday in Free bull insurance, wintering and delivery available (conditions apply)

Northway Cattle Co. is situated in the beautiful Peace River region of Alberta. We raise and sell purebred Black Angus cattle for sale as seedstock. We’re Angus enthusiasts, and as the breed has come a long way, we can now hit all our targets within the Black Angus gene pool. We run approximately 1,000 cows and are no strangers to a variety of different breeds of cattle and their respective performances in a commercial setting. We still have a lot of exotic and Angus-crossed cows in our commercial herds, but the type and kind of Angus cattle that we have been breeding are outperforming our exotic and Angus-crossed cattle at contributing more profit to the bottom line. Can we say that all Angus cattle can do that? The answer isn’t simple. With the breed as big and diverse as it is, there’s plenty of versatility today. At Northway Cattle we breed with a balanced approach: we aim for high maternal qualities with top-end performance in growth and feed efficiency. As the cow is responsible for 50% of the genetic makeup of her calf, we challenge our purebred cows to calve in the early summer on pasture by themselves where their maternal mentality, calving ease, udder and teat conformation and a vigorous calf are a huge asset. Fertility is also one of the traits at the top of our list, and select replacement heifers are only bred one cycle—if she don’t “get ‘er

This is a horticulture checklist for January Register for relevant winter workshops. Consider specific training courses for both yourself and staff, such as first aid, advertising, electronic bookkeeping, record keeping, etc., and book it! Are all of your licences or certificates up-to-date? Review your insurance coverage. Do you have sufficient coverage for your activities? Are all the items or activities that happen on your farm covered? Has anything changed? Review your project to do/wish list from the end of last season. What are some of the things you identified? Start thinking about and planning your field layouts for the coming season. Does your current set-up work for any new crops? Do you have sufficient space for everything you have planned, such as headlands, activities, parking, etc.? Consider field orientation, irrigation systems, shelterbelts and traffic movement – foot, equipment, vehicles, etc. Have you ordered the plant material that you will need for the next season? Planning and ordering in advance can save many headaches in the spring.

Are you ordering transplants? Growing your own? Cleaning up the greenhouse might also be in order. Update, tidy up and repaint sales sheds and signs. Contact Connect with the Alberta Ag-Info Centre: Hours: 8 am to 5 pm (open Monday to Friday, closed statutory holidays) Toll free: 310-FARM (3276)

Can I deny access to a wellsite? Well. Well?

Michele Del Colle, energy, policy and utilities specialist at the Farmers’ Advocate Office (FAO), has been receiving calls from landowners asking if they can deny access to a wellsite. “In light of the economic conditions in Alberta, some landowners are not receiving their surface lease payments. Despite this, landowners cannot deny access to energy infrastructure located on their land and title. It is important to note that denying ac-

cess may result in the loss of surface lease payments.” Landowner Rights for Annual Rental Payment Reductions and the Surface Rights Act (PDF, 72 KB) There are some reasons why companies other than the one listed on title may be accessing the site. Orphan Well Association (OWA) The OWA is the independent non profit organization that operates under the delegated legal authority of the Alberta Energy Regula-

tor (AER). The OWA’s mandate is to safely decommission orphan oil and gas wells, pipelines and production facilities that do not have a legally or financially responsible party that can be held accountable, and to restore the land as close to its original state as possible. The OWA is not responsible to pay arrears for annual rental payments that operators failed to pay. Recourse for landowners for unpaid rentals is available through the Surface Rights Board

(SRB) in the Section 36 application process. Through the AER, the OWA – along with their contractors – have the legal right to access and work on any well, facility, or pipeline declared as an orphan. The OWA does not take the place of the former operator, and they do not hold any surface lease or license for the well or infrastructure. Working Interest Participants (WIP) WIP is a company with a beneficial or legally undivided share in the licence, under provincial legislation. The WIP received some sort of financial benefit

when energy resources were being developed. When a primary licensee becomes insolvent, the AER can look to the WIP to lead on the closure, abandonment or reclamation of the site. The WIP is responsible for the cost proportionate to their share of the investment, with the rest covered by the OWA. It is not responsible to pay any overdue annual rental payments. Through the AER, the WIP has the legal right to access and work on any well, facility or pipeline identified in the closure or abandonment order that was issued to

Collie Corner By Carol Nelson

Dogs contribute to personal safety work cows into a smaller area much better than a person if the cows are a bit suspicious or fearful, as the cow does not get the same trapped feeling from the dog as they do from a person. A cow that is a bit apprehensive of people may feel less threatened if the person keeps a good distance away and the dog is the one to get in closer and direct her movements. If the cow is extremely suspicious the person can stay outside of the pen or behind a gate so they are not as visible and use the dog to slowly ease the cow in the direction she needs to travel. If the cow is a bit raunchy a dog is far more agile on its feet than most humans and can duck underneath corrals or get out of the way quicker. This keeps the handler away from the cow who may acquire dishonorable intentions toward the person! A dog should not be put into a dangerous position either but his safety zone and agile ability to move is different from a human. One is always hearing about accidents with livestock that often have debilitating or fatal results. The safer a person can set up circumstances to prevent wrecks the better. Using dogs in a constructive manner can increase the working safety for people around livestock.

There seems to be a trend in the modern generation of ranching where cattle and handlers do not interact the same as they did in the past. I believe one of the influencing factors to this scenario is that many people now have off farm jobs that prevent them from spending a lot of time with their stock. In days past the rancher spent a good part of the day feeding and working around the stock during each day so he would stop and visit or scratch a cow as he went by. This daily interaction made the cows quiet and they learned to look forward to human contact. Now days cattle are often fed for a few days at a time and just checked daily with an eye towards the time clock. This does not apply to everyone but is getting quite common with people’s schedules and work load, so the cattle do not necessarily look toward humans with quite the same enthusiasm or trust as in the past. Cattle that are not handled often may initially desire a larger flight zone distance from people when they are being worked or moved. This is where the dogs can be a tremendous help as the handler can keep a good distance back from the stock while still controlling their direction with the dog. A dog can often quietly and slowly

Top 3 disruptors of 2020 and their impact on Canada’s ag, food Climate change, protectionism and automation are three forces Bloomberg identifies as major disruptors to the global economic outlook. They’re also among the biggest trends for Canadian agri-food supply chains to watch in 2020. With the potential to both promote and inhibit growth, these forces will shift the profitability of Canadian businesses. Climate change and protectionism shift ag production and profitability

According to a recent climate change report, Canada is warming at twice the rate as the rest of the world. That’s the long-term forecast. But while forecasts for Canada in 2020 vary, partly due to the challenge of forecasting precipitation, it’s safe to say that both weather and trade disruptions have recently increased volatility of Canadian ag production. Canada’s 2019 production of canola, corn and soy fell year-over-year, as a result of either challenged growing conditions or protectionism (or both) that resulted in fewer seeded acres. In 2020, these are the production and trade risks that will still be present for Canadian agri-food businesses. They’re significant because they’re global. New market access issues disrupting trade patterns Seasonal drought or excessive rain at seeding and harvest (and the disease and pests too much moisture brings) Any shutdown in food manufacturing poses a risk for the entire supply chain, especially in sectors lacking recent investment. Major global co-occurring heat events are becoming more likely. These hold the potential to re-charge global food insecurity and boost import-dependent countries’ efforts to stockpile ag and food commodities. We may see more intense bidding for available crops. Uneven global growing conditions can raise input costs for Canada’s food processors who import ag commodities or semi-processed food products. Why emerging trends aren’t just bad news It’s tempting to think of the disrupters as inherently negative, but that would be inaccurate and short-sighted. Disrupters are merely change

agents, for good or ill. Businesses must have a solid risk mitigation plan and a vision of the future to overcome any risks. But that’s hardly news. Here are 4 ways disruptive forces can boost Canada’s agri-food system: Extended growing season: a warming country has some upside for Canadian agriculture. Increases in both annual and seasonal mean temperatures may extend growing seasons, with more days that are hotter. New export opportunities for ag and food products. Challenged market access for Canadian exports results in lower commodity prices benefitting domestic buyers. Conversely, new alliances like the tentative China-U.S. agreement can boost prices of commodities in the North American market. Enhances Canada’s agri-food system as environmental stewards. McDonald’s and Cargill’s initiatives support Canada’s cattle-beef supply chain; the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform, formed in 2002, brings together more than 100 companies and farmer co-ops worldwide to collaborate on sustainable agriculture and includes Rahr Malting of Alberta, the Grain Farmers of Ontario and McCain Foods. These programs make it easier for producers to adapt to consumer preferences. Automation diminishes costs in food processing. Perhaps the disrupter with the most potential to offset the threats to production, automation solves the long-term challenges of labour shortages, especially for skilled manufacturing labour. In ag, Canadian producers are adopting precision technology that provides better monitoring to reduce costs and maintain profitabil-

Those Canadian disruptors of 2020 continued ity in highly-variable growing conditions. Will Canadian businesses investment rebound in 2020? Many ag operations are cautious about making new investments with 2019’s net income below the five-year average. Technology adoption will depend, at least in part, on greater certainty around market access. Producer hesitation is a great example of how disruptive forces shape each other. Uptake of automation and innovative technologies can do a lot to combat the volatility of extreme weather events and climate change. But such investments only make sense when they show returns, which are hard to come by when protectionist policies limit market access. The Canada-US-Mexico Agreement and other recent trade agreements are a step in the right direction. Food

demand has also grown both domestically and globally and, despite some economic headwinds, is expected to continue in 2020. Interest rates are expected to remain low. These conditions, together with productivityenhancing technologies can build a more profitable outlook. The bottom line Different forces – African Swine Fever, among others – will influence profitability in the Canadian agri-food system in the year ahead. But these three disrupters will provide some of 2020’s biggest headlines, dominating the risks and opportunities facing Canadian producers and processors. Canada’s agri-food complex has a history of innovation and resilience in eras of shifting sands. And in a year when the sands will be shifting, it’s good to know that

Companion animal dental health month Dr. Katrina Barth, DVM In February, all across North American veterinary clinics boast about companion animal dental health awareness (as well as January at the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic). Not only are there great discounts to ensure optimal pet dental care, it brings the joy of reviewing why dental care for your furry pets (and horses!) is vastly important. Even though most of us humanoids are quite aware about oral health: plaque control, preventing cavities and avoiding bad breath; many pet owners aren’t aware animals can be subject to similar mouth problems and dental pain. Caring for your pet’s teeth helps prevent the most common oral health problem: periodontal disease. As do most mammals, dogs/cats have four periodontal tissues in which surround and support the teeth: cementum, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament and gingiva. These major structures are responsible to prevent oral bacteria from eating away at the bones teeth erupt from and hence, prevent rotten, stinky teeth. When any of these structures are affected, periodontal disease can occur. The first step in dental health and preventing periodontal issues is to look at your pet’s mouth on a regular basis. You may notice red or inflamed gums (gingivitis), foul breath (halitosis),

pus (potential tooth root abscessation) or broken teeth. Gingivitis and foul breath are caused by prolonged plaque build-up on teeth, or the invisible film of bacteria inflaming the gums. Plaque becomes visible calcified tartar, or calculus, once it hardens; this happens within 48 hours, which is why brushing your teeth every day is important (and your pet’s every other day minimally)! The tartar is the tip of the iceberg as the periodontal disease that is happening below the gum line can cause severe dental pain and systemic infection. Once gums are inflamed, they can detach from the teeth and bone, causing gingiva to recess and potentially reveal tooth roots for bacteria to infect. When the bacteria eats away at the tooth and bone, the potential for a tooth root abscess vastly increases as infection, or a pocket of pus, can develop. If this pus is left untreated, infection can spread into the jaw and cause swelling of the face, jaw or surrounding lymph nodes. It would be warranted to seek veterinary attention if you notice any of these signs in order to formulate an individualized treatment plan for your pet. When you bring your pet in for an annual wellness examination we may express to you that your pet has a combination of then the above three things: gingivitis, tartar, or periodontal disease. In the conscious awake dog/cat, we can see the crowns of the teeth and assess how much tartar exists, but it’s the calculus deposits below the gum line responsible for periodontal disease. The only way to assess how deep the pockets between the gingiva and teeth are or how much jaw bone loss there is, is with mouth x-rays. Dental x-rays, gingival pocket probing, scaling and polishing the teeth are performed to assess and prevent periodontal disease. This procedure is called dental surgery and is performed under general anesthetic. Periodontal disease leads to loose teeth, oral pain and infection, as well as systemic inflammation. Vast amounts of evidence show how chronic infection or inflammation in any part of the body, including nasty rotten teeth, can negatively impact systemic health: diseased teeth contribute to liver, kidney, and early heart disease. In the below images from www.toothvet.ca, you can see how during a routine physical exam would have missed severe periodontal disease and tooth root abscesses without a dental x-ray. This crown actually has minimal tartar and gingivitis, whereas the x-ray of the same tooth on the right shows large black shadows around the tooth roots and jaw-bone loss, diagnosing periodontal disease.

If tartar is present, the only way to remove it is for your pet to undergo a dental cleaning. Prophylactic dentals benefit your pets overall health and your pocketbook too! A prophylactic surgical cleaning and polishing reduces gingivitis and periodontal disease. The prophy does not require any surgical extractions by the veterinarian, which means it is much more affordable. Pets who undergo a prophy dental vs prophy and extractions are under general anesthesia for much less time and able to eat their kibble/play with toys the following day vs being on soft food and no toys for up to 2 weeks after extractions. Surgical extractions increase the cost of dental surgery and reducing the amount of extractions is best achieved when your pet’s teeth are cleaned on a regular basis. A regular basis can be anywhere from 6 months – 2 years depending on the specific pet. Thus, Dawson Creek Veterinary clinic would be thrilled to book your pet in for a routine wellness exam and preventive dental procedures so your pet can maintain a healthy, happy mouth!

Nut job : Intake for enhanced hazelnut renewal funding open

“This is a great opportunity to help farmers get farming,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “We remain committed to supporting the province’s hazelnut growers. This important sector is getting back on track in B.C., and orchards around the province are being replenished with eastern filbert blight resistant varieties. I’m so excited that growers are accessing the funding and seeing results.” The ministry has improved the program this year by expanding the amount of land that farmers can get funded for planting. This increase allows farmers to grow their businesses, and the B.C. hazelnut industry, faster than before.

36 different flooring choices

“As president of the BC Hazelnut Growers Association, I am pleased to say that as a result of the Hazelnut Renewal funding, we are seeing hazelnuts being planted in other parts of the province like the Okanagan, Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and the Gulf Islands,” said Neal teBrink, president, BC Hazelnut Growers Association. “The program is bringing underutilized agricultural land into production for hazelnuts,

The B.C. government is providing the BC Hazelnut Growers Association with $300,000 over three years to help growers replace hundreds of acres of dead and diseased orchards with eastern filbert blight resistant varieties, and further expand hazelnut acreage in B.C. with new planting. The program is accepting new applications until Feb. 7, 2020, for spring planting. B.C. hazelnut growers can apply here: https://www2. gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/farming-natural-resources-and-industry/agriculture-and-seafood/programs/hazelnut-renewal/2020-21_project_ap-

plication-spring.pdf Quick Facts: The Hazelnut Renewal Program’s ongoing goal is to offer greater flexibility and accessibility for farmers. The 2020-21 program eligibility changes include: The maximum eligible acreage for 2020-21 planting is four hectares (10 acres) for double (maximum 269 trees/acre) or single density planning, and eight hectares (20 acres) exclusively for single density planting (maximum 132 tree/acre) per farm operation. The B.C. hazelnut industry is comprised of approximately 40 growers with about 141 hectacres (350 acres). B.C. hazelnut farmers grow about 21 tonnes of nuts per year.

Since the Hazelnut Renewal Program launched in 2018, the first two application intakes — fall 2018 and spring 2019 — resulted in 11,503 new trees planted (21 hectares, or 52 acres) and the removal of approximately 3,025 infected trees (10 hectares, or 25 acres). The results of the fall 2019 planting season are expected to be as successful and will be reported in February 2020 after field inspections are completed. New eligibility requirements that accommodate different planting densities are expected to attract more farmers into the program.

which are a great source of protein and healthy oil for our diet. The program is helping build momentum in the renewal of the industry as a portion of province has the ideal climate for growing hazelnuts. We hope the program continues to be successful so the industry can reach the level needed to be sustainable.”

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) is hosting the 2 workshops – Level 1 CanadaGAP on February 4, 2020 and Level 2 CanadaGAP on February 5, 2020 in Lacombe. Implementing CanadaGAP helps producers meet customer requirements for safe food, positions their business to access new market channels and increases their opportunities for success. As well, those businesses with CanadaGAP meet the preventative control plan requirements of the Safe Food for Canadians Act and Regulations (SFCR). Level 1 is for those producers enroled in and working towards CanadaGAP certification as well as those interested in enrolling. Level 2 will assist those producers already certified in CanadaGAP to maximize their investment and continue to improve food safety processes within their operations. It will better position producers to take corrective action and maintain certification on their own or with the support of an industry consultant.

Workshop participants will receive a pre-workshop assignment to assess their own CanadaGAP journey. The completed assignments will assist the instructor to understand each participant’s operation and business needs within the CanadaGAP program. Workshops begin at 8:30 am and run to 4:30 pm at the Agriculture Building in Lacombe. Register for either workshop by calling the AgInfo Centre at 1-800-337-6030. Deadline for registration is January 27, 2020.
