Jake Gardner finishes fourth at PBR Global Cup USA Jake Gardner was in Arlington, Texas last weekend for the 2020 PBR Global Cup USA as a member of Team Canada. After a strong start on day one of the competition, Canada struggled on day two, coming in second place.
Canada scored on just three of their 16 rides, with Gardner one of the few who stayed on their bull for the full eight seconds. His score of 87 points was the second-highest mark by a Canadian rider, behind Zane Lambert’s 87.75 point ride.
Team Canada earned $67,900. The American team scored on six of their 16 rides to win the competition and earn $362,022.22 in prize money.

Canadian owned bull wins at Denver show with celebrates the second highest attendance in stock show history The 114th National Western Stock Show (NWSS) celebrated sixteen days with 707,922 guests, making it the second highest attended show in Stock Show history. The grand champion attendance record of 726,972 guests was set in 2006 during the 100th Anniversary. “Thank you to every single stock show fan, exhibitor, family member, contestant and volunteer who joined in the celebration this year,” said Paul Andrews, NWSS President and CEO. “Each person plays an important role, helping us keep the Western tradition alive right here in the heart of Denver.” In addition to strong attendance, the three major funding events for the National Western Scholarship Trust also had a successful year. The Auction of Junior Livestock Champions hit an alltime high of $1,066,000 in sales. The Citizens of the West dinner, honoring Marcy and Bruce Ben-
son, once again sold out, and the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale tallied nearly $850,000 in sales. “These three events fund 100 scholarships that range anywhere from $2,500 to $15,000 per student,” Andrews said. “We are incredibly grateful to all the supporters who contribute to these events, as they are directly funding the future of agriculture by helping students who are studying in the fields of agriculture and rural medicine.” Andrews also contributes the success of Stock Show to the dedication and hard work of more than 800 volunteers; the support of the City of Denver; the WSSA Board of Directors; sponsor partners; the livestock, horse and rodeo committees; and again, to the amazing fans who come out every year to celebrate the “Best 16 Days in January.” The 115th National Western Stock Show is January 9-24, 2021.

How a land sale forced me to re-evaluate my commitment I’m pretty sure we’ve all experienced a period in our relationship where it seems like every conversation you have with your spouse has a specific theme; money. Financial conversations seem to happen even more acutely in a Farm situation. When I met my husband, I was sixteen and I had a different plan in mind for the path I was going to take. Inevitably, my plans changed after I met a handsome, hard-working, third generation farmer who had no intention whatsoever of leaving. I came to adore the lifestyle, but it has always been full of challenges, including but not limited to; financial stress. On a rough year like this one, times get even more tight. A recent land sale forced me to re-evaluate my priorities and my commitment to the farm. For weeks our Farm strategized and calculated and worried. I understood why there was anxiety and I knew what was at stake, but it wasn’t until we were driving to the auction that I started to really feel it. Firstly, have you ever been to an auction sale of any type? It is a fast paced, almost aggres-
sive atmosphere, there are tons of people, fast talking, occasional shouting and the smell of burgers wafting around through it all. It’s a busy place. Have you ever been to an auction sale where you will be bidding? Emotions are amplified. Your brain is overloaded with sights and smells and sounds and you are left to try and sort through it all to focus on your strategy. Adrenaline is pumping and your heart is on the line. Before the auction began, the butterflies in my stomach were literally making me queasy. Then it started. My palms got cold and clammy. My leg started to bounce vigorously up and down, I chewed my nails, I pulled my hair as I attempted to follow the action. It wasn’t until the sale was over that I felt like I could breathe again. It proved to me, in a way I wasn’t expecting, just how much I want the life I have. How much I desire to sustain that for my children and for their children. We walked away elated, knowing our farm had just fought hard for what we stand for, what we believe in and for the future generations. That being said, I hope there isn’t another land sale for a while!

Genetic Evaluation Definitions
What does that mean? EPD (Expected Progeny Differences) are expressions of the relative genetic merit of beef cattle for various traits. EPDs are used to compare the predicted progeny performance between two bulls (or females) within a breed, regardless of age or herd location. EPDs are expressed in the actual units of measure for a given trait. Interim EPDs (indicated as PE+) are calculated using a calf’s sire's and dam’s National EPDs plus the calf’s own performance data. Possible Change Table: EPDs are predictions of an animal's breeding value for a given trait. As with any prediction, there is a margin of error, or possible change, associated with an EPD. When the accuracy is low, this margin for error is high. As more information (i.e. progeny data) becomes available, the margin of error becomes smaller. Percentile Table: used to quickly rank a sire or dam within the breed for a given trait. Active Sires/Dams: animals that have at least one progeny with a weaning weight recorded in the past two years. Black/Red Carrier: an animal whose coat colour is black, but carries the recessive gene for red coat colour. ----------------------------------

(PE) Parental Average EPD: indicated as PE, is an average of a calf’s sire's and dam’s National EPDs. These have minimal accuracy as they do not incorporate the calf’s own performance.
(CEM) Calving Ease Maternal EPD: is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater probability of unassisted births in firstcalf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire's daughters will calve as firstcalf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.
(HPG) Heifer Pregnancy EPD: the percent probability in a bull’s daughters’ ability to conceive and calve as two year olds. Just like the stayability EPD, heifer pregnancy EPDs are expressed in terms of a percentage difference. For example, two heifer pregnancy EPDs, 5 and 10, differ by 5%. Daughters of the bull with the EPD of 10 are 5% more likely to conceive than daughters of the other bull. (MARB) Marbling EPD: a prediction of future

This year, over 75 Charolais and Simmental yearling bulls will be on offer in the Drysdale Centre at Evergreen Park.

THE RAY AND DUNNIGAN FAMILIES NAMED THE 2020 FARM FAMILY OF THE YEAR. With over a century of farming history in this area and an entrepreneurial spirit that has helped shape the local agri-business landscape, this family has exemplified longevity on the land and a deep commitment to agriculture and family. The Ray and Dunnigan families of the Halcourt Land and Cattle Company are being honoured as the 2020 County of Grande Prairie Farm Family of the Year. The award recognizes a local farm family that has made significant contributions to agriculture and their community. This year marks the 52nd year of the award. The family has been in the Halcourt area since 1911, starting with Gary’s grandparents, Scotty and Helen Ray and continuing with Gary’s parents, Eldon and Thelma Ray. Today, Gary and Daphne Ray, their son Josh, and his wife, Catherine, along with their three children, son-in-law Don and daughter, Chelsea Dunnigan, and their three children, work together to make their family farming operation a success.
cattle operation, the family keeps busy year round. They also own and operate All Peace Realty, Artesian Insurance Beaverlodge and the Riverbend Golf and Country Club. During the summer, the family takes time to camp on the shores of the Redwillow River and the winter months always include coaching hockey, as well as volunteer work for the minor hockey association and daycare. All of the kids participate in activities including hockey, baseball, volleyball, swimming, and dance. They fundraise extensively to support their involvement in sports. The entire family enjoys the time spent at games. “We’re thrilled with this honour,” said Josh Ray. “It’s important to be able to carry on a long-standing family tradition and raise our children to be proud of this heritage. We love our farm life and being part of the local community.
