Marilyn Catherine Ross

December 1, 1941 – August 22, 2018 It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of Marilyn, beloved matriarch of our motley clan. Marilyn was born in Castor Alberta on December 1, 1941 to Luella and James (Jim) Drever. Her early years were happily spent on the farm with Blackie the horse, Sunday picnics and cousins and cows all around. The family moved into town to make the school commute less arduous. Marilyn had a self- professed happy childhood, sandwiched between sister Mona and brother Dale, later followed by Kent. She was involved with CGIT, piano lessons, and, later on, a fairly active social life as witnessed by the several male class rings still in her jewelry box. Marilyn traveled to Red Deer for summer school where she met Al, who was also there upgrading for university. The stories they tell of this era are full of youthful hijinks. Marilyn received her probationary teaching degree in 1961 and did her student teaching not far from home, in Brownfield. In 1962 Marilyn pulled up her central Alberta roots and came to the Peace Country to continue her teaching career at the Blueberry Creek School and her relationship with a certain Mr. Ross. Marilyn often admitted that she had a weak spot for those kids others may have labeled as troublemakers. She would prefer ‘piss and vinegar’ over ‘wanna-be teacher’s pet’, any day. Al and Marilyn were married in July of 1962, and their first son, Warren, was born in 1964, followed closely by son Bradley in 1965. Marilyn taught for a bit in Spirit River but ultimately gave up teaching to raise her family. Brad and Warren

spent weeks at a time at Moonshine Lake with Marilyn, her girlfriends and their combined 13+ children. In 1976, daughter, Stacy, completed the family. In the late 70’s, a shared family cabin near Invermere entered the lazy summer plans and Marilyn and Stacy would drive down through Radium, with Al flying down to join them for a few days when he could get away. Marilyn was heavily involved in her kid’s activities, Cubs, Hockey, Figure Skating etc. Marilyn developed into an avid curler and made many of her dearest, lifelong, friends ‘bonspieling’ early in her married life. ‘Bonspieling’ often involved some pretty creative costume choices. Curling took her all over the Peace Country, up to Whitehorse and even a jaunt to provincial playdowns. The Kinsmen/Kinette organization was also near and dear to her heart and she was part of the original fundraising for the community pool and KinPark. She received the Elspeth Rogers Kinette Life Membership award in 1985. Marilyn was a dangerous combination of night owl and card-shark, she and her friends would play scrabble and canasta until the dawn broke. When the golf bug bit Marilyn, it bit her hard and she helped with ladies league for

years. Weekend tournaments saw her gallivanting again, often in the little Triple E motorhome with the youngest in tow. Marilyn won several Peace Country Opens. Anyone that ever golfed with Marilyn also knew that she enjoyed collecting lost balls almost as much as the game itself. In 1990, with the kids all away from home, Marilyn joined Al at Dave Ross Equipment, working in accounts. She loved numbers and took great pride in her work, as did Al. She often lamented that she should have taken accounting but that career wasn’t pushed for girls in her era. Nothing got past her. Marilyn worked by Al’s side until 2012 when she retired. One of Marilyn’s favorite life chapters started in 1994 when she became a grandmother. Four grandsons, followed by 5 granddaughters over a 20 year span, all living just minutes away. There were always Christmas concerts, skating carnivals, ball games, dance recitals and HOCKEY! Hockey kept Al and Marilyn busy driving from town to town to catch the maximum amount of games in a day. Grandma was a supplier of cookies, and the #1 mender of favorite jeans and sports gear. Grandma also enjoyed yardwork and gardening with her grandkids. Whatever the child’s passion, she got behind it. Al and Marilyn were fortunate enough to travel throughout their married life and later became part-time snowbirds, disappearing to Palm Desert from January to March. They had many friends with them in their little enclave, many from back home. The golfing was good but the best stories seem to involve exploring and visiting with their partners-in-crime! In the last few years, fighting illness, Marilyn, chauffeured by Al, likely travelled down most of the rural roads in the Central Peace. It was nothing for them to disappear for a ‘crop tour’ and reappear 6 hours later. Marilyn’s wish to see the 2018 Harvest was partially realized as the pea crop was off before she passed away---- a feisty battle with lung cancer. Marilyn is survived by her husband of 56 years, Al, children Warren (Goldie), Brad (Everdien), and Stacy (Matthew) Packard. Grandchildren Spencer, Bailey, Noah, Taitt, Tessa, Dayle, Catherine, Charlie and Maeve. Also left to mourn her passing is brother Kent (Trudy) Drever, nieces and nephews and many dear friends who supported her through life and now, through death Marilyn was predeceased by her parents, younger brother, Dale (Darlene, l.) Drever and older sister Mona (Jack, l.) McManus, as well as granddaughter Thea, born still.

Peace Region Pest Update – sclerotinia

Breakfast Brief BEARISH CROP TOUR WEIGHS ON GRAIN PRICES (August 22, 2018) Grain markets are all in the red this morning as the complex digests Russian wheat rumors and this year’s bearish ProFarmer crop tour numbers. In yesterday’s Breakfast Brief, we reviewed how the ProFarmer crop tour was offset by some slightly bullish crop progress datapoints. However, there’s no such catalyst to keep corn prices, and soybean prices elevated today (and in yesterday’s trading session). More explicitly, the USDA’s record corn yield estimate of 178.4 bushels per acre (BPA) might not be such a pipedream. Wheat prices have seemingly lost their uptrend that started in mid-to-late July, albeit we know that global wheat stocks will not be a record. There are some ideas that Russian wheat quality and quantity issues are overblown, which is supporting the retreat of wheat prices. However, the amount of wheat still held by major wheat exporters at the end of the 2018/19 crop year is expected to be at their lowest levels since 2007/08. That being said, it’s unlikely wheat prices will see 2008-like values, since major importers (i.e., North Africa) are in a better position this year, thanks to some decent harvests of their own. Canada will be one of those countries with slightly fewer wheat supplies. Back in their July report, the AAFC lowered were wheat (excluding durum) 2018/19 carryout by 700,000 metric tonnes to 4 MMT. For some, this is a significant level as people start to get bullish if Canadian ending stocks fall below that number. However, what’s more, noticeable in this month’s report is that AgCanada raised its forecast for wheat prices. For our GrainCents subscribers, we’ll be providing more in-depth coverage of the AAFC reports in the Weekly Digest. This report will be especially important if you’re in the business of buying or selling durum, barley, lentils, and peas. Questioning Nebraska Crop Tour Results On Day 2 of the 2018 ProFarmer Crop Tour, scouts toured through the rest of Nebraska and Indiana, as well as part of Illinois. For the Hoosier and Corhusker states though, the crop tour showed some impressive results. In Nebraska, average corn yields were seen at 179.2 BPA. That’s nearly 10% better than the 3-year average of 163.1 BPA and about 8.5% more than last year’s 165.4 BPA found on this stretch of the crop tour! The range of yields was from 79 BPA on dryland fields to 250 BPA on irrigated land. Currently, the USDA is forecasting an average corn yield in Nebraska of 196 BPA up nearly 8.5% over last year’s yield. Karen Braun of Reuters points out that, since 2001, on average, Nebraska’s corn yield has consistently been 15.5 bushels below the USDA’s final number.

Our pest of interest today is not a pest but can affect many canola producers’ yields if not checked for. Sclerotinia (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) is a fungal disease that can cause a white mold to be formed on many crops. Canola, Sunflowers, Field Peas and potatoes are just a few crops that can be affected by the Sclerotinia disease. It can appear as white mold like structure where the plant meets the soil and may eventually turn into black mold as it matures and produces spores, along the way causing the base of the plant to rot. Sclerotinia is commonly found in areas with poor drainage and pooling issues. Like most fungi, Sclerotinia needs moisture to help infect its host and eventually start to rot the plant. As a rule of thumb, one might assume that ideal Canola growing conditions are also ideal Sclerotinia growing conditions. Depending on the timing during the season, one can scout for Sclerotinia in many ways. First, early in the season before the Canola flowers, you can be out in the field looking for small “golf tee” like mushrooms. This is a strong indication that the disease is present. These mushrooms are called Apothecia

and help to produce spores early in the season to help spread disease. After podding has started typical diseased plant signs include premature ripening, white/pale grey lesions on the stems, branches or pods. Later into the Canola’s growth, indicators include ‘lodging’ and if the stem shatters during swathing. Some infected plants can look bleached with the pods becoming brittle and breaking quite easily. There is fungicide available to help treat infected fields as all Canola varieties are known to be susceptible to Sclerotinia. Before using the fungicide though, consider the following parameters; the potential yield and price of the crop, cost of the fungicide, current and predicted rainfall, presence and level of disease inoculum, e.g. petal infestation, sclerotia/apothecia and the host crops vulnerability/susceptibility. We hope you found this helpful and for further information check out the Canadian Canola Councils Canola Disease and Risk Assessment. https://www.canolacouncil. org/media/516526/canola_disease_scouting.pdf Happy Harvesting!

This is because the ProFarmer Crop Tour has historically toured through an equal percentage of dryland and irrigated corn, despite, the fact more Nebraska corn fields are irrigated versus dryland. Last year, the USDA said that 65% of Nebraska’s cornfields are irrigated. On this year’s crop tour in Nebraska though, 43% of the corn fields sampled were irrigated versus 50% in 2017. Soybean pod counts on the Nebraska crop tour also impressed, averaging nearly 1,300 in a 3’x3’ area. This is 9% better than the 3-year average and 15% better than last year’s count. Indiana Crop Tour Shows Double-Digit Gains In the east, Indiana’s average corn yields on the crop tour were pegged at 182.3 bushels per acre. That’s 6.5% above last year’s yields and 12% more than the 3-year average of 162.5 BPA. It’s possible that the final number could be even bigger, as the crop tour has a history of understating the Indiana corn crop by 2.3 BPA. For soybeans pod counts, Indiana numbers in a 9-square-foot section was 1,312. This is also a significant 14% better than the 3-year average of 1147 pods, and 12% better than 2017’s count.

Today’s leg of the ProFarmer crop tour will finish up Illinois and then tour through eastern Iowa. The western leg of the crop tour will be exclusively focused today on the west half of Iowa. Part of yesterday’s crop tour in the east went through Illinois, which showed also showed some impressive early numbers. However, the soybean crop is less developed in Illinois than Indiana, and corn yields in the state varied by more than 115 BPA.

Fox family, Cathy Busche named 2018 pioneers of the year The North Peace Fall Fair Society bestowed its annual pioneer of the year award to three individuals on Aug. 19. Glenn and Ellen Fox, along with Cathy Busche earned this year’s recognition for their contributions to the North Peace agricultural community, as well as the fall fair. Glenn and Ellen Fox Ellen Fox was born in Salem, Oregon, but has lived in Northern B.C. since 1964, first in Dawson Creek where she worked at Lawrence Meats, and then to Fort St. John in 1985. Ellen, 83, has always had a great love for flowers and gardening. Ellen started the North Peace Horticultural Society back in the 1980s. She has continuously volunteered with the horticultural society and helped with plantings at the cultural centre, the flower show, garden tours and the North Peace Fall Fair. Ellen has contributed many entries throughout the years at the fair and is also a well-known certified horticulture judge through the AHA. She has judged across the North and South Peace areas at fairs throughout her years. At the North Peace Fall Fair, she held numerous positions and was the flowers

and foliage chairperson for many years, and more recently was the president. She was always very concerned with safety and fire lanes throughout the grounds. She always did whatever she could at work bees and getting things done through the fair. At the fair, she supported different horticultural exhibits with surprise prizes for best in show and many other sponsored sections. Ellen encouraged exhibitors and volunteers with her passion for horticulture and community by sharing her knowledge and experience with all. Glenn was born in Forestburg, Alberta, and moved to Northern B.C. in 1957. He arrived in the year where the Taylor bridge was out and you had to cross the train bridge. He brought his young family in a threeton flat deck truck. He had come for a winter to drive truck and planned on going back to Alberta to work his farm. As everyone knows, once you drink the water here, you never leave. Glenn, 90, gave up farming and drove truck for companies in the Fort St John area. He built a house in Annoefield by the high school where one of his children still lives. He built his company in the late 1960s and is still in charge of it today. Glenn has donated tons of

sand, gravel, material, equipment, and lots of prizes to the fair throughout all his years. He was an active member too, always helping to do all sorts of jobs about the grounds. In fact, he was one of the volunteers that assembled the bleachers at the tractor pull. Glenn and Ellen are true pioneers of the north with a huge commitment to the community. Cathy Busche Catherine Rose Busche was born and raised, and has lived all her 80 years in the North Pine and Montney area. She was the eldest of 11 children, so was accustomed to hard work, and ethic she still displays today. Cathy married Norm Busche and moved to land homesteaded by Norm’s father, Frank. Here, Cathy and Norm raised their four kids. A large garden was put up as well as all the other pioneer chores to be

done: canning, bread and butter making, washing, and the list goes on. Cathy and Norm were good neighbours, often helping others before their own work. Volunteering is a huge and happy part of Cathy’s life. She is very involved with the church and community club at Montney. She taught Sunday school for many years, and help with all events at the community club in some way: baking, taking minutes, you name it. Cathy helped establish Montney Centennial Park at Charlie Lake. The fall fair is an event Cathy loves, and she helps out in many areas. Best of all, Cathy is an encourager and displays her Christian faith by being there for others, and is always ready to listen to those who need support. There is not a neighbour Cathy hasn’t helped, nor an organization she has not given her time to. Thank you, Cathy!

Canadian farm equipment market likely softer in second half of 2018 In the 2017 Economic Snapshot of Canada equipment sector, FCC Ag Economics forecasts for total tractor sales and combine sales were relatively close (total tractor sales projected 13.1% vs. 15.4% actual, combine sales projected 27.3% vs 23.9% actual). 4WD sales are typically more difficult to predict given its complement to seeding units. Our forecasts for 2018 will likely be different given the current global trade environment. The demand for new equipment is highly dependent on the health of the agricultural economy. During the first half of 2018, Canadian farm equipment sales have had moderate growth, averaging close to 5%. Rising interest rates, price pressures on farm equipment, slow growth in farm revenue along with a weaker Canadian dollar is expected to lead to softer farm equipment sales in the second half of 2018. FCC Ag Economics expects farm equipment sales to be flat to lower for the remainder of 2018: Overall total tractor sales are projected to increase 1.4%. 4WD tractors sales are projected to decline 6.4%. Combine sales are projected to decline 6.9%. 2019 farm equipment sale projections: Total tractor sales falling 1.6% 4WD tractor sales falling 12.5% Combine sales falling 12.8% Sales are expected to slow due to trade uncertainties around commodity prices and from lower expectations for crop yields due to the dry growing conditions in Canada. As a result, Canadian crop receipts are expected to have moderate growth of 2% in 2018 and 1.3% in 2019 reflecting

the slowdown in both 4WD and combine sales in both 2018 and into 2019. Increased production over the last several years has supported crop receipts and farm equipment sales. Livestock receipts particularly those of beef and dairy operations are also a good indicator for 2WD horsepower tractors, reflected in our projections for overall total tractor sales to remain relatively flat. Livestock receipts are expected to grow 3% in both 2018 and 2019. At the current time moderate growth in farm cash receipts means softer farm equipment sales. Despite a slowdown, relative to five-year average total tractor sales remain in-line with their fiveyear average of 25,829 units sold. We continue to expect both combine and 4WD tractor sales to normalize between the 2000-2007 and 2013-2017 period averages. Combine sales averaged 1,347 units during the 2000-2007 period and 2,341 units sold in during the 2013-2017 five-year average. Similarly, 4WD tractors averaged 633 units sold during 2000-2007 and averaged 1104 units over the past five years. Factors that impact farm equipment sales: The Canadian dollar – For every $0.01 movement in the value of the Canadian dollar, sales of farm equipment tend to change on average by 0.5%. The Canadian dollar is expected to average $0.78 in 2018 and $0.763 in 2019. Further declines in the value of the Canadian dollar will further reduce farm equipment sales. Interest rates – For every 50-basis point increase, farm equipment sales decline on average by 1.25%. Interest rates are forecast to gradually continue rising in 2019. Commodity prices and crop production re-

flected in farm cash receipts –Moderate growth in farm cash receipts is leading to softer farm equipment sales. Growth of Canadian economy - Overall tractor sales are the result of a stronger Canadian economy and low unemployment levels leading to strong sales in the lower horsepower tractors generally not associated with agriculture. Price of equipment - (Farm equipment sales are expected to soften in 2019 given a decline in crop receipts, a pressured Canadian dollar and increases due to advancement in technology and higher prices of raw inputs in the manufacturing process like steel). Rising farm equipment prices also have an impact on farm equipment sales, as most farm equipment is priced in U.S. dollars, the price of the new technology will also be impacted by the value of the Canadian dollar. Our projections do not account for the impact of the current trade tensions and how the steel and aluminum tariffs may impact farm equipment sales. Predicting where sales will go during uncertain times can be extremely difficult. Check back next week where I will examine how current global trade tensions and the steel and aluminum tariffs impact farm equipment sales. Nitrogen management strategies in dry conditions - Frequently Asked Questions

lose N back to the atmosphere. Fertilizer losses from these products depend on a combination of soil and environmental factors (Table 2). Nitrogen losses from broadcast urea or UAN applied when the soil is cold, such as in late April and early May, are minimal during the first 1-3 days. However, 25-50% N losses can occur in the first 7 days with the same products broadcast on warm soils. How can I make topdressing work even though there are limitations with the practice? Decide ahead of time that more nitrogen will be applied if precipitation changes yield expectations. Perhaps set a target precipitation by a certain crop stage for decision-making purposes. Without predetermined conditions, too often post-seeding fertilization is never done even if there is rain. Fertilize as soon as possible after yield potential changes. The earlier the fertilizer reaches the rooting zone the greater the potential benefit to the crop. Evaluate gassing off loss potential and choose appropriate fertilizer. Keep in mind that rain is still needed after fertilization to move the nutrients into the root zone. Evaluate the potential for N immobilization. Increase N application rate if fertilizer is going into considerable crop residues Apply enough N to make a difference. Approximately 30% of broadcast N ends up in the crop under good conditions, and cereal and canola crops require about 2-3 pounds of N for every bushel of grain produced. Consider applying a minimum of 25-30 pounds of actual N per acre in addition to any estimated losses from gassing off or immobilization.

When it’s dry, doesn’t it make sense to only use minimal nitrogen (N) fertilizer with canola and cereals and then broadcast more N when moisture conditions improve? Delaying N fertilization until after seeding will work in some situations, but the window of opportunity to make it successful is narrow and the decision about adding additional N must be made within a few weeks of seeding. Since topdressed N is inefficient, and usually requires a custom floating operation, the total costs of broadcasting after seeding are considerably higher than if a comparable amount of N would have been applied at seeding. When do crops need nitrogen? Nitrogen is a significant component of proteins which are essential for growth. The N uptake pattern and dry matter accumulation of spring wheat by growth stage is depicted in Figure 1. At the 5-leaf stage, wheat starts to accumulate N rapidly while overall plant growth lags behind. Canola’s N uptake pattern and peak demand period are similar to that of wheat. Canola must have assimilated a substantial portion of its total growing season N requirements prior to bolting. Nitrogen fertilizer must be in the root zone and available for uptake as crops enter their rapid growth period, perhaps within 4-5 weeks of seeding. Canola and cereal crop residues will immobilize N during the initial phases of decomposition. Nitrogen fertilizer applied into these residues will be tied up for weeks or possibly months. It is estimated that 20 to 30 pounds of N per acre will be immobilized for every ton of cereal crop residue from the previous year.

A reason to care…physically and mentally stimulating horses By Glenn Stewart We have all heard that it is the release that teaches. However, there needs to first be a contrasting stimulation in order for the release to be meaningful, otherwise it is very hard to give the release in the first place. After the horse offers a try, allowing him time to rest and relax can be a release, as is sometimes allowing the horse to move. Rubbing or stroking the horse in a way the horse appreciates can be a release; these concepts have great value to the horse and are much needed and appreciated if they have been physically and/or mentally stimulated. When and if you are using a rub as a release, it has to be done like you mean it. Sometimes you may only be mentally stimulating the horse because you didn’t ask them to move their feet. In those times when you do ask a horse to move their feet, it should be to mentally

stimulate them, not to play them out. We should always be striving to create a calmer, braver, smarter horse; not one that is just tired. The key to this is to be sure to stimulate the growth in the horse mentally and physically. It is not possible to rub a horse smart or brave. It can become a reward for them if done at the right time and feel. If you think about someone following you around the house rubbing your back, where ever you went, for no particular reason. Your back isn’t sore, but it is starting to get sore and a blister from all the rubbing. On the other hand, if you were picking rocks all day, trimming horses, or weeding the garden, a nice massage might be very welcomed. If you have been standing in one spot for a half hour and someone come along and said “Hey why don’t you stand still for another half hour?” it might be torture rather than pleasure. Again, on the other

hand, if you had been climbing a mountain for the last three hours and someone said “Lets sit down and take a half hour breather” it would have some real value. Most horses enjoy a good rub, but many don’t. The dislike of being rubbed can be very obvious with horses that have not been handled much with no trust or understanding established yet. Being that they are prey animals, and we are predators, it is not high on their list in the beginning. It is possible that horses that have been handled plenty may not really enjoy a rub or rest, because they haven’t been stimulated mentally or physically and all the standing around and or rubbing just becomes an annoyance. Another example of what I’m trying to explain is if you offer a piece of pie to someone that just finished supper, ate too much and has already had two pieces of pie and you offer them more, it doesn’t have the value

as it would to someone that hasn’t had any pie for months and are still hungry from supper. Asking a horse to do the same thing over and over when they already understand the exercise and have been doing it for a year is not stimulating for them unless you are some how asking them to improve how they are doing that exercise. A rest for a horse when they are looking for one is a release. A rub when they are looking for one is a release. A well timed rub or rest after a horse has been physically and mentally stimulated becomes somewhat of an addiction for them and something they look for and crave rather than something they have to put up with. Create a trying horse by mentally and physically stimulating them and then offering them the contrast that they are looking for. With the correct amount of ingredients mixed together it is nothing short of amazing the speed in which horses can learn. It is equally amazing how very little change there can be, when components are missed or in short supply. Keep your weaned calves healthy If your fall marketing decision involves retaining weaned calves, keeping heifer replacements, or purchasing calves for feeding there are simple ways to ensure maximum feeder health. Basically we need to think of these calves as walking immune systems that have to be nourished in order to fight off diseases which are common throughout the weaning and initial feeding period of the animal. First, calves are only as strong as the cow herd in which they originated. Excellent cow vaccination programs, cow herd nutritional status, herd genetics and general husbandry are all very important factors which affect the immune status of the weaned calf you plan to feed successfully. Calves purchased from well vaccinated cow herds have been protected in gestation from diseases and receive colostrum rich in antibodies. The herd nutritional status also affects the quality of the colostrum and vigor of the newborn. Numerous studies have confirmed that calves receiving too little colostrum at birth are far more prone to succumbing to feedlot disease. Once again we see how important nutrition is.

weaning is probably the ideal program that can fit some operations. If a preweaning round-up and processing is not possible the second ‘booster’ can be put at weaning. However the stress factor comes into play again and these newly weaned calves may not respond as well to a vaccine during this very stressful time. Prevention programs and stress management will help decrease shipping fever, and antibiotic use in these calves. A good nutritional program is vital to allow these calves to consume enough energy during a low consumption period to maintain a healthy immune system. Also, low stress handling and weaning techniques may fit into your program to help minimize the shock of weaning and feed changes. Being flexible with your weaning timing and try and schedule when the weather is favorable is also very important. Our veterinarians will be more than happy to consult you with the appropriate program which fits your needs. Please give us a call and we will set up a herd health plan with you.

Stress is another detrimental factor when dealing with post weaning sickness in calves. Studies have shown the most profound stress on these calves is mixing. The weaning process itself, transportation, feed changes, and new environment are all considerable stresses. Committed to friendly, quality care

September is Dental Awareness Month! Regular dental care is important in dogs, cats, horses and even exotic pets. Dogs and cats can get tartar and periodontal disease requiring professional cleaning of their teeth. Horses can get sharp points and abnormalities on their teeth that can affect their performance and their ability to chew their food. Our veterinarians have training in a variety of dental procedures to help keep your animals healthy and happy. www.dcvet.ca Small Animal: 250-782-5616 Large Animal: 250-782-1080 1080 238-116th Avenue, Dawson Creek, BC Across from the Fairgrounds

Silver Valley Gospel Fellowship The first church meeting was in the home of Aron Derksen, the min meeting place at the time. Don Campbell, Presbyterian minster from Wanham was the first to serve the Silver Valley area prior to 1960.

In October 1960, Silver Valley was declared a preaching point within Blueberry Mountain. Ministers or student ministers came on Sunday afternoons. The minster resident in Wanham would look after Belloy, Blueberry, and Silver Valley.

PROCESS THIS.

The Vermeer BPX9000 is built for operators who want a simple, durable and versatile bale processor that can process round or large square bales (with optional square bale kit) of varying qualities and distribute it where it’s needed. Produce uniform ribbons, hit tight spots along the bunk line or spread evenly up to 40’ (12.19 m) for bedding – all while monitoring how much is being fed from each bale (with optional scale kit). For a better process, start with a better processor. What’s influencing grain markets? With farmers rolling ahead into the busy harvest season, I thought I would compile a few bigger picture issues influencing grain markets. Weather is a market-driver in any year, but there are other influencers at work too. Weather is a market-driver in any year, but other influencers like trade and politics also exert their stimulus on grain markets. Trade Governments and industry must continue discussions promoting a rules-based trading system which lays the foundation for free and fair exchange of good and services. Backlash against trade globalization in recent years has inspired re-emergent protectionism. If left unchecked, it could slow the pace of global economic growth. A trade system that promotes “might is right” will not be beneficial for sectors like Canada’s agricultural industries and therefore, changes at a World Trade Organization level will be needed. Grain markets and outlook Reflecting on some broader world grain and oilseed trends, I should note world gross domes-

Proud to be your one stop source of quality trailers for 25 years in the Peace Country

tic product is increasing at a steady rate. The likelihood of further U.S. interest rate increases are likely to push the value of the American dollar higher relative to other currencies. There has been steady growth in demand for crude oil. However, there could be limited upside in global oil markets and this could make it harder for other commodities (such as grain/oilseed futures) to rally. Current U.S. Department of Agriculture data suggests the corn stocks-to-use ratio is tightening compared to recent years, despite a large corn crop this year. This has the potential to induce a reasonable rally in Chicago corn futures. Higher corn equals higher wheat. Global wheat markets were dragged down by the supply side between 2012 to 2016. After hitting a floor in 2016, the world wheat market moved sideways for a period of time. It now appears these same markets are recovering from this slump. Despite production concerns across the northern European Union and into the former Soviet Union, wheat and other grain exports from Black Sea countries are likely to keep growing in the coming years. This could, however, be the second successive year of declining wheat production in major exporting nations and has the potential to support wheat markets.

Changing politics of global trade The U.S. midterm elections and looming elections elsewhere, including India and Brazil, have the ability to throw something of a wild card into the global trade environment. At present, Indian gross domestic product is looking positive in terms of growth. However, with Indian elections set to take place in May 2019, it seems likely that more attention will be placed on rising food prices for all Indians, as opposed to supporting Indian farmers with higher prices. There is a need to support farmers with higher prices, while still providing affordable food to the wider population - two key opposing forces present in right now. The import tariff imposed on pulse crops in the past year represents one example of the government supporting their farmers. And that is likely to stay in place for the foreseeable future. Bottom line Weather typically has a strong influence on markets, but other matters like trade and politics also exert their stimulus on grain markets. Let beneficial insects help you Beneficial insects offer growers a major helping hand in controlling pests and weeds, experts say. Some insects provide beneficial protection against pests and weeds. Experts recommend creating inviting areas for these insects. “Sometimes it’s easy to take for granted the fact they’re there,” says Manitoba Agriculture entomologist John Gavloski. “In many years, they’re the reason we don’t have more regular outbreaks of some of our pest insects.” Beneficials versus pests Wasp parasitoids are among the beneficials that can do an incredible job in managing crop pests. The egg-larval parasitoid Macroglenes penetrans controls an average of 31.5 per cent of the wheat midge across Saskatchewan. “You take away that one biocontrol, and you’d have a lot more spraying for wheat midge,” Gavloski says. He adds that without aphid predator parasitoids, farmers would experience much more regular and frequent aphid population explosions that’d require a good deal more spraying. Weeds

Some species of beneficials even consume weeds and weed seeds, states Manitoba Agriculture. “There are some insects that are specific weed bio-control agents,” Gavloski says, noting some have been imported for that purpose. In Saskatchewan, James Tansey, pest management specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, adds there are carabid beetles that consume weed seeds. Spraying To protect beneficials, growers should target insecticides at the pests in question, and only when they’re above economic thresholds, Tansey says. Also consider whether an entire field requires spraying, or if it can be limited to patches and edges, adds Gavloski. New economic threshold models are taking beneficials into account, including an aphid adviser out of Ontario and one from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. “Part of what we try to do through extension is preach to incorporate natural enemy populations into spray decision,” Tansey says. Identification is key, and Tansey praises web-

sites like the Prairie Pest Monitoring Network and the Field Heroes program. Better environment One result of modern agriculture is the creation of large monoculture fields, resulting in less enticing environments for some beneficials. “If you don’t have some flowering plants around, it’s harder for some of these parasitoids to sustain themselves and to be as productive,” Gavloski says. Adult parasitoid wasps and flies that lay their eggs into other insects, killing them, need to feed on nectar and pollen. Some predator beneficials will also supplement their diet with pollen. So having flowering vegetation around or within a field or in a shelterbelt can be helpful to beneficial populations, Gavloski says. Bottom line Beneficial insects are natural tools for weed and pest control. Growers could reduce input amounts with the right combination of conditions. Article by: Richard Kamchen

ON THE

OPEN ROAD R0011490554

We’re rolling through Two Hills again I had stayed in Camrose the night before in order to be fitted for a gown for a ceremony that I will be part of in September. Ladies, if you are in need of a formal gown Tish’s Fashions & Finery in Camrose is the place to go! Wow what incredible service - but more on that another day, I promise. Back to Two Hills and my reason for being there, the Run to the Hills Memorial Bike Rally....

haulers and tents everywhere. Easily 300+ people were already here! Laurie and I headed over to the Junction Inn which is where I would be staying this year for the rally. I had my favourite room, #107 on the ground floor.

In Beaver County, just before the little community called Viking, there was BRAND NEW blacktop, about 10 K worth, not a whisper of wind and amazing blue skies. What a happy, happy place to be!

Laurie had to head back to Fort Saskatchewan so we said our goodbyes and I proceeded to get settled in my room when all of a sudden the thunder hit and a few minutes later, so did the hail. That was followed by 2-3 minutes of a total deluge, an absolute downpour....

I pulled into the grocery store in Two Hills to meet up with my girlfriend Laurie from Fort Saskatchewan. She had picked up the order of Scavenger Hunt Maps that Staples had printed for us. All 20,000 of them, her poor little Ford Thunderbird sports car!

On Friday night the rally serves up a welcome dinner as part of your rally fee, and this year was no different except that lightning had knocked out the power to the better part of the entire town for about an hour and as a result dinner was late getting underway.

Well, we set about dropping off maps to lighten her load and then went to the Two Hills Inn for some Chinese for lunch. Lemon Chicken and Special Fried Rice! As usual the portions were so huge that Laurie took enough leftovers home for her and her hubby to have for super!

Josee Milroy and her team of volunteers including Twiggy did an amazing job serving up ham, veggies, lazy cabbage rolls, buns, salad....

Although the Two Hills Inn is an old building, Julie and her hubby, Chow, have renovated all of the rooms and they are really decent rooms, with individual air conditioners, bathrooms, albeit small ones in each room, comfy beds and a really good price point. After our scarf, we headed down to the rally site at Galeta Park and dropped off a ton of the maps in the beer gardens so that the various advertisers could pick up their share of the maps for distribution. There had been vicious rain the night before but low and behold, there were motorhomes, toy

In spite of Mother Nature’s hissy fit, the riders just kept coming, and coming and the unofficial headcount was about 485 people registered, down from 700+ of the year before, but still an admirable and respectable number! Of course the poor ice-cream vendor didn’t sell a lot of ice cream, but the mini donut vendor did a decent trade. MJ Hearing didn’t do big business, but the Golden Gopher Tattoo Studio & Cafe in Derwent (Reneta and Dana) worked their fingers off until the wee hours of the night on both Friday and Saturday and Dana was tattooing on Sunday morning. WARNING....it will steal your heart and cause you to be a repeat attender! If you are blessed enough to be riding today, please remember to Ride like everyone around you is blind and can not see you! Belt Drive Betty Editor & Rider

Music got underway with Anthony Poirier the one man band and people started coming in from their soggy campsites to listen to him. The Steven Spencer band came on at about 10 pm and rocked the house out. When my time to hit the hay came I took the shuttle sponsored by Wing Shot Guiding Service over to my motel room and closed the door on an amazing day. Weather people don’t seem to have a very good handle on the weather, it had been calling for partly cloudy and 22 on Saturday, but that never materialized until Sunday. (At least everyone had a nice ride home weather wise!) The sun finally came out late Saturday afternoon/early evening, but the temperature never hit 22 and the wind was cold and bitter.

How to protect pastures in dry times Dry conditions in various parts of Canada means some pastures are in rough shape, experts say. So much so, there’s talk that in some cases, cattle producers are considering selling off their calves early, simply because there’s no feed or it’s not economical to feed them. A general lack of rain over long stretches of the summer prevented regrowth. Producers in the Prairies, as well as eastern Ontario, parts of Quebec and the Maritimes faced similar circumstances during the last several weeks. Alberta Agriculture and Forestry says during dry conditions, cattle producers should be focused on how to “buy feeding days” of forages and/or grazing while maintaining a reasonable level of productivity. Budget projections will involve maintaining all, some or none of the core productive asset base: the cow herd. Similar approaches are appli-

cable to feeder cattle operations. Don’t jump the gun Harry Brook, a crop specialist with AAF, says the key to protecting pastures both in the short and long term is not to push cattle out too early. He says to make sure there is a good six-inches of growth before it’s grazed. Make sure there’s six inches of growth before grazing pasture, says crop specialist. “The plant, to regrow in the spring, takes energy out of the roots,” Brook says. “If you graze it down before it can replenish that energy, basically you start shrinking the root mass.” If that’s done year after year, it creates a situation called root bound where the vast majority of the grass roots are bound to the top two to four inches of soil. That opens the door to making the grasses more prone to drought, nutrient

deficiency and poor production. Rotate Andy Hart, a farmer from the Claresholm, Alta. area, is a big believer in frequently rotating his cattle between paddocks. He says around five years ago, the farm operation revamped its pasture management plan and now rotates the 200 cow-calf herd around 40-acre paddocks every three to four days in the early growing season. The benefit is measurable. “One thing I have noticed is we have fewer bare patches in our pastures now, their favourite species of grass, which they generally graze on the hardest, has a chance to recover and overall productivity and grass quality is generally higher,” Hart

says. Productive pastures aren’t about how much rain falls, but how the rain is used. “Most of us tend to hang on, hang on, hoping it is going to rain, but there comes a point where, in the best interest of your grass, you have to have a drop-dead date to prevent overgrazing,” he says. Bottom line This summer’s hot, dry weather is leaving many pastures in rough shape due to overgrazing. Planning ahead for next year can help break poor production cycles and assist with sufficient pasture amounts for animals. Article by: Craig Lester

Rebounding ag markets hit a bump

Auction Sale

After a promising recovery from the mid-July lows, grain markets hit a jarring speed bump in the form of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Aug. 10 release of U.S./ world crop production and supply/demand updates. The numbers projected larger than expected U.S. crop production, which weighed heavily on Chicago soybean futures, while also pulling corn and wheat futures lower. Soybeans U.S. soybean average yield and production were estimated at 51.6 bushels per acre and 4.59 billion bushels. Both figures exceeded the range of pre-report expectations, highlighting the biggest U.S. bean crop in history. USDA’s new-crop soybean ending stocks estimate is at 784 million bushels, also far exceeded pre-report trade expectations. World ending stocks for newcrop soybeans came in at 105.94 million tonnes, while stocks of old crop were pegged at 95.61 million tonnes - both again far higher than expected, especially on new crop. Chicago soybean futures tumbled in response last Friday, but stabilized to start this week. We can’t yet rule out a soybean market

retest of the mid-July lows following these bearish USDA’s numbers, but projecting yield remains a guessing game right now as the soybean crop is truly made in August. Also, U.S. soybean prices are already cheap - essentially on sale with Brazilian supply priced $1.50 per bushel higher than U.S. export origin. You would think that any buyer but China is coming to the U.S. for soybeans these days. Still, the USDA’s record large carryout estimate amid ongoing Chinese trade tension uncertainty was enough to send a serious chill down the spine of the market. Wheat After posting its own impressive rebound rally from its mid-July lows, U.S. wheat markets also took an open-ice body check with its head down following the release of the USDA report. Ironically, the agency’s numbers were really not all that bearish for wheat. Sure, the USDA’s forecast for 2018-2019 world wheat production and ending stocks were not reduced to the degree that many in the trade were expecting in this report, but they are trending lower and will likely be revised lower still in coming reports.

For years, government reports stated the large quantities of wheat. For the first time since 2012, that will not be the case for the coming marketing year, as USDA reduced its estimate of world wheat production in August to 729 million tonnes, supported by cuts in crop estimates for several major wheat-producing nations. Global new-crop wheat ending stocks are seen falling to 259 million tonnes. While that’s up from trade expectations of 255 million tonnes, it’s still down 14 million from last year. European wheat production was cut as expected, though still above trade ideas. Supply-scare rallies need to be constantly fueled by fresh bullish news. Even a hiccup in the bullish news, and markets typically roll over. Last Friday’s USDA report increased U.S. wheat export prospects for the year ahead. But thus far, despite talk of eroding crop potential from major producer/exporter regions like the European Union,

former Soviet Union and Australia, there has been little evidence yet of increased exporter buying of U.S. wheat. But that is likely to develop in the weeks/months ahead. Aside from the short-term disappointment, the fundamental situation is more bullish for wheat in 2018-2019 than it has been in several years, since exportable global supplies of wheat are expected to end the new crop marketing season lower. The USDA is likely to lower its global production estimates and increase its U.S. export outlook in the next round of supply/demand projections in September. Bottom line The summer’s rebound rally stalled in the August USDA supply/ demand report, but this year’s upward price potential is not snuffed out yet.
