Xavier Mason: A voice for graduates’ futures By John Sallee

jsallee@thenorthernlight.org

He was born on the east side of Anchorage with a normal childhood, playing video games like “NBA Live” and enjoying his youth. His name is Xavier Mason, and he is the Spring 2015 Commencement speaker. Mason grew up in Anchorage and later transferred to Eagle River High School, where he had a hard time fitting in. “My freshman year, I was kind of a loner ‘cause I didn’t grow up there and I didn’t know anybody. The only person I knew for the first month was my brother,” he said. Mason then took the opportunity to join the football team. By his senior year of high school, Mason had already completed most of the credits needed to graduate, so he turned to home-school. “It was fun. I was just at my own pace, so I could go faster and just not waste any time,” Mason said. Now a UAA senior, Mason is completing his degree in management and marketing. He hopes to be a social entrepreneur and dreams of becoming the head of a conglomerate. “I really like creating, building things and I want to continue doing that, such as budding a company, make it sustainable, move on and then build something else,” said Mason. Mason has always been interested in business marketing because it gives room for creativity, which he believes is “valued and stifled.” His role models include accomplished and ambitious rappers, with a prime example being Jay Z. “You find the ambition and you find it contagious in his artistry, it goes into detail how to achieve exactly what he is

doing,” Mason said. Reaching just as high as his role models, Mason applied to be the Spring 2015 Commencement speaker in memory of his late grandfather Jean who passed away in November 2013. “He was a man of extreme intellect but due to his circumstances he wasn’t able to show the world what he can do. He really inspired me to get an education,” said Mason. As far as second guessing goes, Xavier said there were many other intelligent students at UAA who applied. “Part of me is wanting to see if I had what it takes,” he said. Mason’s friends support him in his ambitions as well. While studying abroad through the Semester at Sea program two years ago, Mason met fellow student Bryson Banks. When Banks first met Mason, he thought, “He seems like a cool dude, maybe we’ll see each other around the ship periodically.” But as the months continued, Bryson began to see Xavier’s bright personality as a light in the darkness. “From his aforementioned infectious laugh, to his words of encouragement, to his radical ideas, to his impartiality towards others no matter their race, religion, sexual orientation or otherwise, he truly is a respecter of persons and can change the atmosphere of an environment instantly as a result of his energy,” said Bryson. As far as the commencement speech goes, Bryson believes Mason is the perfect fit for speaker. “He’s candid, honest and unequivocally transparent, and is not one to mince words, but somehow communicates everything with the ultimate grace, poise and meekness, befitting someone 30 years his senior,” said Bryson.

An advisory committee composed a communications faculty member, the faculty senate president and several graduating students selects the Commencement speaker. After the application deadline, the committee reviews the applicants and decides who would best represent the class. The committee believed that Mason was, without a doubt, the right decision. “He’s done a lot for his community. He’s part of the Emerging Leaders Program. He has an array of experiences that makes him unique but also makes him a good representative of someone to look up to,” said Paula Fish, assistant director of Student Life and Leadership. “His content was really great, the kind of content you want in order to convey a message that’s comprehensive of the entire campus because there are so many types of students including traditional, non traditional, students with kids or family et cetera.” Justice major Ruddy Abam agrees that Mason is fit for the Commencement

Graduation is coming up, and what better way to celebrate your departure than with a bedazzled graduation cap! Here is your Go-To Guide to designing your beautiful headwear. Do a quick search on Google or Pinterest and decide on what your genre of décor is. After deciding what interests you (or what you find pretty) run to the store and purchase globs of glitter, glue, and colored Sharpies. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Go home. Make a mess. Eat some bananas and get your potassium. Make more mess. Create something that can be tacked on your wall for the next 20 years.

Now run to the store and grab your supplies and make a piece of art that you can wear proudly on your head for a couple hours. The next time you’ll pull it out of storage will probably be when you’re showing your cap off to your kids; that’s okay though. Any Mean Girls or Harry Potter quote will do.

speech. She met him two years ago and took courses with him, eventually becoming friends through his strong passion for leadership. “He was telling the class about his experience as a leader, and it just grew on me how passionate of an individual he was,” said Abam. Abam believes that Mason will convey a message that will be easily relatable because his humbleness balances his leadership prowess. “He is the most humble person. To be able to do as much as him and to remain that way is very admirable, and I believe people will see that,” said Abam. Mason will deliver his speech May 3 at the Alaska Airlines Center. After graduation, Mason plans to stay in Alaska, because it ultimately is his home. However, he will continue to travel in order to gain experience with various places around the world. He hopes to achieve many goals throughout his lifetime, which include giving a memorable Commencement speech.

Predicting the playout: The NBA Finals GOLDEN STATE VS. CLEVELAND

By Nolin Ainsworth

sports@thenorthernlight.org In honor (or disdain) of finals week, I look ahead to “the” Finals: the two weeks at the beginning of summer sports fans hang out with LeBron, whichever team he belongs to and whichever team is standing in his way of a title. At least, that has been the status quo the last four years. Even though the NBA playoffs are still young, with two rounds of action to go before the Finals, I went ahead and made some predictions. I gave myself the liberty of choosing two possible Western Conference champions and two possible Eastern Conference ones. Here is my best stab at the four match-ups we are likely to see in the Finals.

CONFERENCE: GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE STADIUM: ALASKA AIRLINES CENTER

LeBron’s first championship run with Miami ended when his team overcoming Kevin Durant’s in the Finals; each superstar was trying to outshine the other on the biggest stage in pro ball. In a parallel way, this is LeBron’s first championship run back with Cleveland, and he very well meet the newest A-List superstar in the Finals: Stephen Curry. Curry led the Warriors to the best 2014-15 regular season record, with a winning percentage just north of 80 percent. The Davidson-alum is the second coming of Reggie Miller but with some added playmaking. The atmosphere of these games would be outrageous. Both San Francisco and Cleveland are starving for a title — and both teams have the talent to bring one home. PREDICTION: CLEVELAND IN 7

Just one hoopster’s well-meaning take on sports and sports culture.

SAN ANTONIO VS. CHICAGO Unlike a Golden State-Cleveland matchup, both these clubs have had the “dynasty” label attached to their name in the past. The main difference is San Antonio is still coached by a hall-of-famer, whereas Chicago’s legendary coach Phil Jackson moved on a long time ago. These teams have a similar makeup, with selfless stars and reliable role players, but I would give Chicago the slight edge if Derrick Rose plays up to his potential. PREDICTION: CHICAGO IN 6

GOLDEN STATE VS. CHICAGO

SAN ANTONIO VS. CLEVELAND

Chicago may be the only Eastern Conference team with the ability to win in the Finals over Golden State. Behind guards Rose, Jimmy Butler and Aaron Brooks, Chicago can experiment with which guards can best defend Curry. Chicago has big men that can defend as well, which could give Golden State’s pick-and-roll some trouble.

This matchup would be a treat for no other reason that it would be the third consecutive year the Spurs face off against King James in the Finals. However this time, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginóbili would be facing a different, more youthful “Big Three.” So far, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love have been playing well in their first respective postseasons. But the Spurs’ Big Three have been together for over a decade, and this is the first season Cleveland’s Big Three have been together, which makes me side with the Spurs.

PREDICTION: CHICAGO IN 7

PREDICTION: SAN ANTONIO IN 6

Distance: 6 miles one way Fees: Free Difficulty: Difficult Elevation gain: 1,775 ft. Trailhead: Off Old Glenn Highway near Loretta French Park

Distance: 1 mile total Fees: $5 parking fee Difficulty: Easy Elevation gain: None Trailhead: Take Hiland Rd. exit off Glenn Highway, turn right onto Eagle River Rd. Turn right at North Fork Eagle River trailhead This easy one-mile hike is a simple out and back trail that is very flat. The trail ends once the river is reached, but hikers may walk alongside the river if they choose on the carved in foot path through the low lying bushes. The trail is accessible all year long and during the winter cross country skiers and hikers can cross the river ice to get to the far bank.

The Ptarmigan Valley trail located in Chugiak climbs high above the town back into the tundra of Ptarmigan Valley. The trail follows along lush forest and foilage for six miles all the way up to Round Top Mountain (which connects to Baldy and Black Tail trails). The trail is steep but well worth the climb as hikers come out into Ptarmigan Valley and can catch views of Cook Inlet beneath them. Hikers attempting the whole trail should plan for six or more hours to complete.

Distance: 3 miles one way Fees: None Difficulty: Easy Elevation gain: None Trailhead: Take the Seward Highway south to Girdwood. Take the Alyeska Highway to Alberg Ave., turn right. Continue on Alberg Ave. until North face Rd., take a right to get to the parking lot. Trailhead is a short walk above Alyeska Resort.

Distance: 1.5 miles one way Fees: None Difficulty: Moderate Elevation gain: 500 ft. Trailhead: Take right off Hiland Rd. exit off Glenn Highway. Turn right onto Skyline Rd. Trailhead is at the end of the road, please note that the road changes name several times.

Beginning at the Alyeska Resort the Winner Creek trail meanders through the northern most rain forest of North America. The trail has a relatively easy terrain with very slight inclines along the way. Hikers may choose to hike to just the hand tram that crosses winner creek gorge in a gut wrenching ride 100 feet above the rushing waters of Glacier creek or may contine on the loop that ends near Girdwood Elementary School. It’s 2.5 miles to the hand tram and 8 miles on the full loop. The trail is pristine, taking hikers far from the hustle and bustle of Anchorage. The path is surrounded by old tall Sitka spruce, hemlock and blueberry bushes. The 35 miles to Girdwood seem worth it all for this Alaskan gem.

This favorite of Eagle River locals goes to the top of Baldy. The entirity of the hike offers views of Anchorage, the Cook Inlet, and Matanuska Valley. It goes through a small area of Hemlocks until the trail climbs up into the tundra. The trail was renovated and rerouted in the summer of 2014 by a Student Conservation Association group based out of Colorado. The new route takes switchbacks up the face of the mountain rather than going straight up. The change was made in attempts to prevent erosion that was highly prevalent with the straight up approach of the former trail. The new path is much easier for hikers, but does make the hike longer.

Distance: 1.7 miles one way Fees: $5 parking fee Difficulty: Moderate Elevation gain: 1,300 ft. Trailhead: Take O’Malley Rd. to Hillside Dr., turn right. Take a left onto Upper Huffman Rd. until Toilsome Hill Dr., turn right. Follow the road until the Glen Alps Trailhead parking lot, please note that the road changes name several times.

Flattop is Anchorage’s and Alaska’s most hiked trail. The trail is host to thousands of visitors each year from all around the world. The trail takes off from the Glen Alps trailhead where hikers will go up and around Blueberry Hill (plentiful berry picking available late August) to the first saddle. From there hikers will continue their climb to the windy peak of Flattop Mountain by stairs until they reach the second saddle. From the second saddle onwards the trail becomes very rocky. A sign before this section of trail recommends that children and pets need not continue further. The sign also states that the section of trail is difficult and to exercise extreme caution while descending. While the sign should be taken seriously the last section of the Flattop hike is definitely doable even for children and pets. The very last part of the trail goes over a talus field and does require scrambling over rocks, but with a little extra caution and consideration hikers will be able to ascend safely.

Right before the top the climb over the rocks becomes the most difficult, hikers can choose to go straight up with more rock climbing or can take a minor path to the right. The path to the right is very thin, but does avoid the rocks more. Once hikers reach the peak a pile of rocks holds up a pole where an American flag and prayer flags fly. It’s a tradition of many to touch the pole before they officially claim they have reached the top. Flattop Mountain peak tends to be very windy so be prepared by bringing a wind breaker at the least. The 360-degree views from atop the mountain more than make up for the windy conditions that frequent the top, however. Hikers may choose to turn around after reaching the top of Flattop Mountain or can continue on to Peak 2 and Peak 3. Hikers should exercise caution on the descent from Flattop Mountain while going over the rocky areas; sometimes it’s easier to slide down on your butt.

Distance: No data Fees: $5 parking fee Difficulty: Easy Elevation gain: No data Trailhead: Take right on Hiland Rd. exit off of Glenn Highway. Turn right onto dirt road right before Briggs Bridge. Follow the dirt road to the end.

The Lower Eagle River trail doesn’t have many reports on the actual distance with reports ranging from anywhere between 3-10 miles one way. The trail is very wide and open for mountain biking as well as hiking. The trail follows along Eagle River back to the South Fork Eagle River Falls. Be aware that the trail does intersect with a trail on private property.

View on the Lower Eagle River trail.

Distance: 1 mile one way Fees: $5 parking fee Difficulty: Easy Elevation gain: 175 ft. Trailhead: Take Thunderbird Falls exit off the Glenn Highway. Trailhead is on the right.

The Thunderbird Falls hike is a short one mile hike in Chugach State Park that takes hikers either to an overlook over Thunderbird Falls or right down to the bottom of the fall. The trail goes alongside Eklutna Canyon through birch forest with very little elevation gain. Most of the gain in elevation occurs within the first tenth of a mile of the hike and then flattens out progressively. However, hikers who wish to go stand next to Thunderbird Falls must take a steep, but manageable, hike down the cliff to the river bank below. Once alongside the river hikers must maneuver across a thin bank alongside the cliff to get right up next to the falls. This bank is covered in ice for much of the year making this part somewhat tricky. With light feet and careful movements though most hikers will be able to make it closer to Thunderbird Falls. Take special notice to not go off the trail while on the hike as private property exists on one side of the trail and deep canyon on the other. The hike is open year round. The trail is busiest during the summer with tourists visiting from out of state. During the winter, the trail can be slippery in some parts, but is still very much doable.

Eagle River Nature Center Trails Distance: 3 miles total Fees: $5 parking fee Difficulty: Easy Elevation gain: None Trailhead: Take right at Hiland Rd. exit off the Glenn Highway. Take right onto Eagle River Rd. Eagle River Nature Center is located at the end of the road. Albert Loop Trail goes out from the Eagle River Nature Center and then takes a loop out across Eagle River and back, following a part of the Historic Iditarod Trail. The trail runs over large wetland/bog-like areas that can often become very muddy and cause huge puddles on the trail (most of the trail has boardwalks and bridges over the wetter parts). During summer 2014 the regular trail route was closed due to trail reconstruction and puddles as deep as three feet. The trail often closes periodically from August to October when bears are out on the trail. The trail is open during the winter and is groomed for cross country skiing use. The trail doesn’t have any considerable elevation gain until the last quarter or so mile going back to the Nature Center. During the hike glimpse views of the Eagle River Glacier and the surrounding snow covered peaks.

Eagle River Valley and Eagle River Glacier as viewed from the Albert Loop Trail at the Eagle River Nature Center.

Distance: 25 miles one way Fees: $5 parking fee Difficulty: Difficult Elevation gain: 2,100 ft. Trailhead: Take right at Hiland Rd. exit off the Glenn Highway. Take right onto Eagle River Rd. Eagle River Nature Center is located at the end of the road.

Distance: 3 miles one way Fees: $5 parking fee Difficulty: Easy Elevation gain: 400 ft. Trailhead: Take right at Hiland Rd. exit off the Glenn Highway. Take right onto Eagle River Rd. Eagle River Nature Center is located at the end of the road.

The Historic Iditarod or Crow Pass Trail can be started out of Girdwood or from the Eagle River Nature Center. Proper preparation before the hike should be taken as it generally is done as a two day hike with an overnight stay along the way. The hike does involve crossing Eagle River at the Clear Creek ford. The trail passes by old run down mines, crosses over snow and talus fields and Alpine Lake at the pass. There are also sweeping views of the Chugach Mountain Range and nearby glaciers. Hikers will also pass by Heritage Falls, Icicle Creek and Twin Falls. If hikers choose to go from the Crow Creek Trailhead in Girdwood the climb to the pass is a steep and strenuous one while the climb from Eagle River Nature Center to the pass is less steep, but a much longer climb.

The Dew Mound Trail takes off from the Eagle River Nature Center. Dew Mound Trail parallels the Historic Iditarod Trail (also known as Crow Pass Trail) three miles back from the nature center. Along the way hikers will pass Dew Mound and Dew Lake. Shortly after passing Dew Lake the trail ends at the Echo Bend Campsites. Here hikers can choose to go back the way they came, go further on the Historic Iditarod Trail or loop back on it for a change of scenery from the Dew Mound Trail. The trail has four shorter trails that branch off and lead to the Historic Iditarod Trail if hikers want to loop back before reaching the end. The first side trail is unnamed at about mile 0.5 and will take hikers quickly to the Historic Iditarod Trail. The second side trail is called Four Corners Trail, the third is Mountain Meadow Trail and the fourth is Rapid Camp Trail. Rapid Camp Trail will bring hikers to the Rapids Camp Yurt.

XAVIER MASON

STUDENT SPEAKER FOR THE SPRING 2015 COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY In the years between his high school and college graduations, Mason traveled the world. He studied in Prague, learning about different philosophies of leadership, and traveled aboard a ship through the University of Virginia’s Semester at Sea program, studying the effects of globalization. Along the way, Mason discovered social entrepreneurship and honed his public-speaking skills. Mason is graduating from UAA with a wealth of academic, community and leadership experience and has grown an impressive network of friends and colleagues. “There’s so much out there, so don’t spread yourself too thin. My advice? Just persevere. Try your hardest not just to pass the class but to take your academic weak spot and make that your strength. … Here at UAA, I’m definitely more driven. I’m a lot more confident in who I am. I found my voice in things I’m passionate about.”
