Seawolves eliminated by Cal State San Bernardino from West Regionals
PHOTOS BY RYAN JOHNSON
Cal State San Bernardino blockers Brenna McIntosh and Lauren Nicholson attempt a block as UAA’s Caitlin Hanson spikes it past them during the fourth set (16-25) of Saturday’s match.
UAA’s Taylor Noga pancakes as she saves the play during the third set (17-25) of the semi-final game of the Western Regional Championship against Cal State San Bernardino.
UAA’s Chrisalyn Johnson and Erin Braun put up a wall as they block Cal State San Bernardino’s spike during the fifth set (12-15) of the semi-final match of the Western Regional Championship.
UAA’s Julia Mackey is in mid-spike as she battles against Cal State San Berarndino blockers Malika O’Brien and Alexandra Torline during the fifth and final set of Saturday’s match.
UAA setter, Morgan Hooe reassures her team as they play a hard first set (28-26) against Cal State San Berardino at Saturday’s match, the semi-finals for the NCAA Division II Western Regional Volleyball Championship.
By Nolin Ainsworth
Sports@thenorthernlight.org The Seawolves were in for another highly contested NCAA Div. II West Regional game last Saturday night when they faced off against Cal State San Bernardino. This time though, there was no dog pile at center court after the final point, just disillusioned looks, some teary eyes and one tired bunch of college volleyball players. UAA was defeated 26-28, 21-25, 25-17, 25-16, 15-12 by the powerhouse Coyotes out of Southern California, bringing to an end to the most successful season in program history. With Katelynn Zanders watching
from the bench — Mizuno sneaker on one foot and walking boot on the other, freshman Leah Swiss carried most of the load for the Seawolves with a career-high 25 kills. Caitlin Hansen and Julia Mackey combined for 25 kills and 5 blocks in their final games as Seawolves. Meanwhile, outside hitter Alexandra Torline put her team on her back, sending 20 kills over the net over the final three sets alone. San Bernardino’s Lauren Nicholson and Jayann DeHoog were also locked in. Nicholson finished with 21 kills and 15 digs and DeHoog had 62 assists. The Seawolves saw a two set lead disappear as the Coyotes began put up points, quickly. San Bernardino went on a 14-4 run in the third set, giving them a comfortable lead that made UAA’s 5-1
run later in the set look cute. The Coyotes hit over over .400 in the fourth set to tie the match at 2-2 — holding the entire Alaska Airlines Center hostage — putting on a clinic in passing and hitting while erasing UAA’s lead. The Seawolves last chance came to recover came in the fifth set, but once again it was the Coyotes who jumped out to an early lead that would hold up. Cal State San Bernardino lost the following night to Western Washington in the championship game. The San Bernardino club has been one of the most dominant Div. II volleyball programs in the country over the last 15 years, losing in the national championship games in 2008 and 2011. With a 27-3 overall record, including
14-2 at home, the UAA volleyball team brought plenty of excitement to campus over the past three months. “I think we made a bunch of volleyball fans this season and hopefully they come back next year to watch us play,” Green said. Zanders and Mackey will go down as two of the most decorated Seawolves in program history. Zanders was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year at the end the regular season while Julia Mackey was named First-Team All-GNAC for the fourth time in her career. Over the past four season, the two have been major offensive contributors. Zanders’ 1,392 career kills ranks second in Seawolf history while Mackey’s 1,130 ranks fifth.

Seawolves win thriller over Dixie State in West Regional Quarterfinals
PHOTOS BY RYAN JOHNSON
Cal State San Bernardino blockers Brenna McIntosh and Lauren Nicholson attempt a block as UAA’s Caitlin Hanson spikes it past them during the fourth set (16-25) of Saturday’s match.
By Nolin Ainsworth
Sports@thenorthernlight.org Less than 10 minutes’ into their postseason lives, the UAA Seawolves suddenly found themselves without their senior ace Katelynn Zanders. The No. 1 seed UAA would prevail anyways, but not before two hours of back-and-forth drama thanks to a gutsy effort by the No. 8 seed Dixie State, 25-18, 15-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-12. With her team out to an early lead, Zanders landed awkwardly on her left foot after going up for a block on Red Storm Kailey Frei. After a short time hunched
over on her knees in pain, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year was carried off the court by the training staff. Freshman outside hitter Chrisalyn Johnson promptly checked in for the senior. Johnson has not been in the regular rotation for the Seawolves, but played a big huge role in Zanders’ absence. “You started seeing [Johnson] do some nice things towards the end of the match,” head coach Chris Green said. “Just getting a little more confidence.” Both Johnson and middle blocker Caitlin Hanson set career-highs in kills, delivering 8 and 14 respectively on a
night when every point mattered. UAA middle blocker Erin Braun also had a strong outing — posting 14 kills. UAA setter and first-team All-GNAC Morgan Hooe quietly assisted on 44 points. Dixie State was led by freshman Taylor Duryea whose 15 kills and 6 blocks nearly amounted to a shocking upset of the Seawolves. “I’m not ready to be done at all with this team,” Duryea said. “Obviously, losing sucks but the saddest part for me is losing anyone on the team.” Dixie State seniors Alex Anderson and middle blocker Makenzi Bird-Murphey
played in their final games as Red Storm. The 2015 Pac West champions from St. George Utah brought their own fan base to Alaska — themselves. At timeouts, the visitors could be seen dancing to music, yelling, and just having an all-around happy time. “We knew there would be a big crowd. We knew there would be lots of big shiny lights,” Dixie State coach Robyn Felder said. It almost worked too. The Seawolves looked to close out the match in the fourth set leading 2-1, but Red Storm Delayne Daniel had other plans. The junior outside hitter had 5 kills in the see-saw fourth set, includ-

ing one that prevented UAA from tying the game at 21-all. The fifth set appeared to be going in Dixie’s favor. Down 3-7, UAA was forced to take a timeout, only 8 points away from saying goodbye to a 26-2 season. The pause in action took the wind out of the Red Storm’s sails, and soon the Seawolves were right back in the game. UAA reclaimed the lead after Hansen and Julia Mackey roofed Daniels attack. Despite committing two more service errors later on, the Seawolves found a way to win and live another day. Freshmen Leah Swiss and Johnson combined for 5 kills in the final go-around.

Timely goals help Seawolves to road sweep over No. 17 Michigan Tech
By Nolin Ainsworth
Sports@thenorthernlight.org Hockey earns first road sweep outside Alaska since 2011 Christmas came early for Seawolf hockey fans. Three weeks early to be exact. The Seawolves swept the No. 17 Michigan Tech Huskies last Friday and Saturday in Houghton, Michigan, winning 3-2 on both nights. UAA now improves to 5-4-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play heading into Part I of the Governor’s Cup this weekend at home. The wins were easily the biggest sur-
prise of week nine of the WCHA season, a weekend in which all 10 teams were in action; that’s because the two clubs’ seasons were going in opposite directions as of late. The Seawolves hadn’t won a game in the last two weeks, whereas the Huskies hadn’t lost in that amount of time. “Tonight feels even better,” UAA coach Matt Thomas said after Saturday’s win. Thomas knew a higher level of play was needed Saturday if they expected the same outcome from the night before. That’s just what he got. After putting only 18 shots on Michigan Tech’s Jamie Phillips Friday, UAA placed 27 on net Saturday against backup net minder Matt
Wintjes. “We needed to be faster team off the rush and did that,” Thomas said. The Seawolves fell down by a goal Saturday when Husky left wing Brett Boeing scored his first on the season just six minutes into the game. The home team maintained its one goal advantage through the rest of the first period. Seawolf Jarrett Brown evened up the score in the second, after a scrum formed around Wintjes who coughed up a rebound that Brown cashed in on. The Seawolves dodged a bullet later in the period — killing off a short 5-on-3 Husky power play after Matt Anholt was called for delay of game while on the penalty kill himself.
Mens Basketball Standings
The Seawolves revisited the penalty box later in the period, and this time the Huskies used the most of the opportunity to take the lead. Tyler Heinonen was in the right place at the right time to put Michigan Tech up. Alex Petan’s shot bounced off Mantha’s leg pad within reach of Heinonen who stood off the right post. The Seawolves came out firing in the third period — first, it was defenseman Chase Van Allen’s turn. Next, it was Brad Duwe’s, who stripped the puck from a Husky player deep in their own before firing one over Wintjes shoulder and all but sealing the come-from-behind win.

Toe to Toe: Walking isn’t for everyone
Walking at commencement versus just picking up your diploma
By Nathan Burns
nburns@thenorthernlight.org
Why aren’t you going to walk for commencement? It’s a question that every student who doesn’t gets asked incessantly by people who aren’t the person graduating. There are other reasons not to walk other than being harrased by busybodies, and if you choose to save yourself two hours of grief, you shouldn’t have to defend your choices. Paying fifty-dollars for the privellege, graduating students get sorted alphabetically into their seats and get to sit through two hours of length ceremony before their thirty seconds of excitement. The commencement ceremony is always a dry affair, students get showered in generalities by a variey of university bigwigs they haven’t met, telling you how proud they are of you for contributing to the graduation rate and their sincere hope that you live productive lives, full of happiness and regular contributions to the alumni organization. Then you get to hear the commencement speakers give a series of interchangable speeches. You will hear “what an honor it is to speak to you” about an
inspiring list of cliches, ranging from “follow your dreams”, to “always keep learning”, the ever popular “pass it forward”, and the novel sentiment “the future is in your hands” as the speaker attempts to pass inspiring lifechanging advice to a crowd of thousands, all noddingly politely at the familiar sentiments. If you miss this part of the ceremony, I recommend looking at the motivational pictures on your aunts facebook wall or opening a bunch of fortune cookies for an equivalent education in trite vaugely-applicable life advice. Last, and possibly least, you get to walk to the stage, have your name read, get a handshake, and a piece of paper while the whole stadium cheers for you. Well, cheers is a strong word, everyone else isn’t here to see you graduate, they are there to see their loved ones walk, and are willing to politely clap until they hear a name they recognize. You could spend commencement packed in shoulder to shoulder like cattle, sitting with people you don’t know, having spent 50$ on robes you can never wear outside of halloween, all for a minute and a half of excitement. It’s like waiting in line at midnight for the newest Harry Potter book, but instead
of entering a magical world of friendship and high adventure, you get a recipet confirming your purchase of a college education a week earlier than you would have gotten otherwise. But what about the memories? College makes, acording to the vast majority of people who have gone, some of their fondest memories. Won’t you miss out on that by skipping coomencement? You might remember playing videogames until six in the morning, the time you crammed a semester’s worth of studying for missed classes, or completing a 20 page paper, or your first love and then first loss. You’ll fondly recall friends, relationships, and experiences. You won’t ever fondly look back on sitting through commencement. If someone thinks that commencement is important, ask them how often they think of it. ask them the name of who sat next to them, what their commencement speaker said, and which faculty members handed them their diploma. The answers will be telling. Regardless of what you choose, YOU choose. You didn’t spend the past 4 years becoming an adult, to not be able to decide for yoursel

Something is wrong when I hear more stories about graduates not bothering going to their comencement than those who do. It’s always for the same reasonms too: it ‘costs money’ or ‘it’s just for the families.’ These reasons are pathetic and you are too if you believe them. What is an extra $50 to buy a cap and gown when you just unloaded $40,000 on your education? Who cares if Mom and Aunt Martha make a big deal of this stuff? Even if you could care less, “walk” out of your love for them. After all, if it wasn’t for family support, not many of us would even be in college in the first place. It could even be the time of your life. When else will confetti rain down over you a la an Alaskan snow storm next to people you have never met before and may never see again in your life. I’m curious why being awarded for an accomplishment has gone out of fashion. I’m the type of person that revels in accom-
plishments - both big and small. Seeing as I’m still working toward my bachelor’s degree, most of them up to this point in my life have been small. I keep an old shoebox under my bed with cheap plastic soccer trophies I won as a 7-year-old just to remind myself that I’m a winner. I’m not lying to you. I may not of been a household name within the parks and rec circles of Sandy, Utah, but at least those trophies tell me that the guy at the engraver shop remembered my name (for a short time anyways). If you YouTube commencement speeches, you’ll get a bunch of ones with from Harvard and Dartmouth when some famous person who didn’t go to that college offers up their recipe for success. Here in Alaska, we can’t attract top-talent to be our commencement speaker. Then again, who is to say we even want to. The closer to home our speaker is (see profile on page. X), the more relatable their words will even be. The fact is, most of us after we graduate we live pretty typical lives, and that’s okay.

OPINION
Regarding the Northern Access Road Project By Evan Dodd Contributor
Regarding the Northern Access Road Project The U-Med District currently includes two universities as well as three health provider facilities and the Municipality of Anchorage expects the area to develop into a major economic hub. As a result, traffic congestion in the area has become a major issue and roadblock to further development. Due to this, the Northern Access Road has been proposed to increase citywide access to the area and decrease traffic congestion in the U-Med area. The road would connect the intersection of Bragaw Street through 0.7 miles of wetlands on UAA’s campus to Elmore Road. While the project has been widely reported to be an inevitability, most media reporting has neglected to note that the project will likely trigger the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) due to the wetland habitat that will be affected by construction. NEPA, enacted in 1970 by Richard Nixon to promote and enhance the human environment, is considered to be the legal foundation for environmental protection in the U.S. Broadly speaking, NEPA applies in any proposed action which involves federal funding or influence. The process involves an environmental assessment which is conducted to determine whether the proposed action constitutes a significant impact to the environment. If this is the case the EA will progress to an Environmental Impact Statement, where otherwise a Finding Of No Significant Impact will be filed. While stakeholders affected by the project have various opinions regarding the road, it is important that the public understand the implications of the NEPA process in regards to the future of the project.
