Parents accuse TDSB, trustee of failing them RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Parents at John Fisher Junior Public School say the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) hasn’t worked enough with them

to address concerns related to a high-rise tower development to be located right next to the school. The 35-storey construction project at 18-30 Erskine Ave. was upheld by the Ontario Municipal

Board amid vociferous opposition from parents and city officials, and construction could begin as soon as fall. Parents say the TDSB, and local school trustee Gerri Gershon in particular, failed to support expressed con-

TECHNOLOGY

City considered the place to start, establish a tech-based business HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s technology ecosystem is a breeding ground for the latest startups and innovative technology. Companies like Uber, Google and Twitter have flocked to Toronto to establish Canadian headquarters because it’s seen as the place to foster the next wave of technology to move society forward. And it’s not on a whim. There are more than 400,000 people employed in the tech sector in the city and it is still growing. Because of that, the City of Toronto is putting more emphasis on nurturing its tech talent. According to Scarborough Southwest councillor Michelle Holland, the city’s first appointed official as advocate for the innovation economy, it starts by tackling the sector’s branding issue. "Toronto really punches above its weight when it comes to being a tech city. It’s the number 1 city for startups and a great place for people to start and grow a business," Holland said. "But the problem is our own Canadian-ness, we don’t beat the drum enough. These guys are top talent at the forefront of thought leadership and innovation and we need to show that. The tech talent in Toronto is doing phenomenal and we just need to get the word out and not be so shy about it. We need to get over that." Her role, although still in its

She aims to create growth in the technology sector in Toronto and the Toronto-Waterloo Corridor, with a focus on attracting and retaining talent with diverse backgrounds. Holland is currently working with a team out of the Civic Innovation Office at city hall to develop "a narrative" for Toronto’s global tech brand. "We’re trying to retain talent and talent stays because they have opportunities to build their business. It’s not about the cuisine or the diversity, as amazing as that is. In this ecosystem to retain talent and

draw it from other countries you need opportunities, and we’re always looking at how to do that," Holland explained. In the last few years, Toronto has continued to push and create these opportunities for startups by offering incubators, accelerators and access to the tech community and it’s beginning to pay off. Toronto has a growing startup ecosystem containing between 2,500 and 4,100 active tech startups, according to a 2016 report released by TechToronto. It also states Toronto is the strongest startup ecosystem in Canada. "There’s this vast network of support

like MaRs and OneEleven that (help at the) post-seed stage. So there’s support for tech companies at every level giving them a chance to connect and get the right support at the right time." But Toronto wasn’t always that way Rickett describes. Grant Brigden, the founder of Rover Parking, an app that allows residents to rent out their driveway as a parking spot in the city, remembers a time when Toronto was floundering to grasp what startups needed to thrive in the city. "It’s gotten 300 per cent better in the last year and half.

and there’s great talent here. I think there’s also a really good community you can tap into," said Chris Rickett, the manager of entrepreneurship services with Start Up Here Toronto. The economic development initiative was launched to support startups and connect entrepreneurs to programs, resources and events to help them start, grow and scale their business. "There are over 60 incubators and accelerators from idea-stage programs like The Founder Institute to early-stage incubators like the DMZ, and bigger organizations

Just the way people are thinking about startups in Toronto will push it to become one of the top leaders for tech," Brigden told Metroland Media. He launched Rover Parking about two years ago and for eight years, until 2010, he worked in Silicon Valley for the company OpenWaves, which was later sold. He admits that when he decided to try and get funding for the company in the city, it was different from Silicon Valley, Toronto was "super frustrating". "When we started there wasn’t much help. The problem Toronto had, if I had to simplify it, was they were confused between scale up and startup," he explained. "When we went looking for money, they asked for things like metrics that startups don’t have yet. Those numbers come at the stage of a scale up." But Toronto has improved, he said, mainly due to the rush of companies like Facebook, Autodeck and Slack taking notice of Toronto’s potential. "We’re starting to see a lot of organizations starting to realize they need to set up in Toronto because the next wave of entrepreneurs and startups will be a lot bigger in Toronto than the wave before that," Brigden said. Rickett agrees: "The tech landscape in Toronto has kind of blown up. That global recognition of talent and innovative thinking is happening. We’re just starting to scratch the surface on what Toronto’s tech communities can do."

Caregiver Show can offer help, ideas

’It takes all of you. 24/seven you’re dedicated to these two people …’

JASMINE HUI jhui@metroland.com Carm Di Piazza became a full-time caregiver for her parents 10 years ago after her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2007 and her father’s health was declining. She took care of her father until he died in 2014 and is still caring for her mother. "It was challenging at first. I had two nervous breakdowns at the beginning because I was doing it all on my own," Di Piazza said. "It required a lot of patience, energy and time. It wasn’t easy." Her parents did not want to be in a nursing home, so Di Piazza fulfilled their wish by taking care of them every day, do-

Cowman became extremely ill in 2011 and her mother became a caregiver for her. "Mum looked after me for close to one year," Cowman said. "After three years of people looking after me, mum and I moved into an apartment together." Cowman recovered from her illness, but her mother went through severe dehydration and developed bowel issues.

THE CAREGIVER SHOW The Caregiver Show takes place on Friday, June 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ontario Science Centre, 770 Don Mills Rd. Admission is free. It showcases more than 50 exhibitors, including government agencies, organizations, health associations, hospitals and service agencies. Speakers will talk about brain health, palliative care, downsizing and self-development.

Two months ago, her mother was not able to sit up one morning and doctors diagnosed her with vertigo. Cowman became her main caregiver, cooking meals and helping with tasks, such as grocery shopping despite having severe neuropathy in her hands and feet, which classified her as disabled. "It’s worked out well, considering what we’ve both been through," Cowman said. "It was a bad three years for me and mum was there for me the whole time. I’ve done the same for her." Mary Bart is the chair of Caregiving Matters, a registered Canadian charity that offers an online forum for peer support where caregivers can learn the issues and efforts that go into caregiving. The charity has been an exhibitor at the Caregiver Show before and is return-

"Caregiving does matter and we have years of understanding what caregivers want." Di Piazza said the Caregiver Show helps give her ideas on how to help her mother at home. "I always leave there with a few tips," Di Piazza said. "It’s always good to get ideas."

ABOUT US

Weathered flags should be grounded With Canada Day celebrations, marking the 150th year in our nation’s history, rapidly approaching, flags will be flying from coast to coast. In many cases, bright, pristine Canadian flags will be front and centre at legions, government offices, businesses, and private residences. They’ll be prominent at countless special events and even attached to cars and trucks. And, unfortunately, there might be a few cases It might surprise where our cherished some to realize symbol looks less than maybe even a that there are some pristine, bit ragged and threadpretty specific rules bare. It might surprise regarding the some to realize that there are some pretty display of our specific rules regarding the display of our nation emblem, nation emblem, the the Maple Leaf. Maple Leaf. Policies are in place to govern how the flag is flown from everything from attaching it to a vehicle or building, to suspending it above a street, or using it on a flagpole. For example, if a flag is suspended above a street, the rule is: "The upper part of the leaf (the points of the leaf) should face north in an east-west street. The upper part of the leaf should face east in a north-south street." If you want to hang a flag flat against a surface, here’s the rule you’ll need to follow: "If hung horizontally, the upper part of the leaf (the points of the leaf) should be up and the stem down. If hung vertically, the flag should be placed so that the upper part of the leaf points to the left and the stem to the right from the point of view of the observer facing the flag." Want to fold your flag? The ceremonial folding of our national flag involves six to eight people following six specific steps. Has your flag seen better days? "When a flag becomes tattered and is no longer in a suitable condition for use, it should be destroyed in a dignified way." We’re not quite sure what constitutes a ’dignified’ disposal, but we do concur with the notion that the Maple Leaf should fly only in a pristine condition. To display Canada’s national flag is to demonstrate one’s patriotism and appreciation for our good fortune in being able to live in the best country on the planet. To display a weathered, shabby version is to do a disservice to this most important symbol of our nation.

Bringing stories of Toronto’s suburbs downtown I remember being disappointed two years ago when the Toronto Public Library released the Toronto Poetry Map. It’s a great idea: dots on the map, each linked to a snippet of verse describing that place, or this intersection in the city. Except, some downtown places had overlapping dots, swollen with multiple mentions. All of Scarborough had just four dots. The Toronto Zoo, Scarborough Bluffs, and the Hav-A-Nap Motel got mentioned, but not much else. For our other suburbs, things weren’t much better. Etobicoke, on that map, was a poetry desert. Ditto, East York. Where were the words describing them? How can this be a city whose stories

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto are all set south of Lawrence, east of the Humber River, or west of Victoria Park? Catherine Hernandez, the author of Scarborough, a novel published this month, is one of the first to take this challenge head on. Her book crams in so much Scarborough: women working at a nail salon and a massage parlour,

men going to East Point Park for sex, the Scarborough East Pow Wow, a school literacy centre, a Caribbean restaurant, fights at a dollar store, fantasies of orangutans escaping the zoo. The best-known Toronto novels and poetry are about the old Toronto, partly because many are set in Toronto of the past. So, I’m grateful for the "What’s Your Story?" contest from which the Ontario Book Publishers Organization started to draw out diverse, but unpublished, writers from Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke and East York. "Diverse people produce diverse stories," says Holly Kent, executive director, but it’s hard to get suburban writers to literary

events happening downtown. "It can seem very insular to an outsider." This is the second year the group has received stories and poems inspired by these four former suburban cities. Once again, Kent says, the contest jury was "floored" by their quality. You’ll be able to see this year’s winners reading their work this fall. Now that the city’s major art groups and festivals are finally discovering the suburbs, the literary scene is making it out there too. Through fiction, we’ll find more of the truth about this city. We might finally understand each other. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

Primary care service to replace urgent care FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com With the imminent closing of the Urgent Care Centre, North York General Hospital (NYGH) is working to establish a primary care service at its Branson Ambulatory Care Centre which could open as early as June, said the hospital’s president and CEO. The Urgent Care Centre at the Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue site, housed inside Branson Ambulatory Care Centre, is set to close Thursday, June 1, with NYGH citing drops in patient volume and the majority of visits from outside the catchment area. The hospital announced in March plans for the closure of the Branson Ambulatory Care Centre in 2019 after opting out of a lease renewal with landlord Advent Health Care Corporation. Tim Rutledge, NYGH’s president and CEO, said they hope to have a sameday access, primary care family physician service running "as soon as possible" likely out of Branson

beginning in June, before moving to a satellite location along the Bathurst Street corridor prior to the lease expiry. "It won’t be anything like emergency or urgent care," he stressed in an interview with The Mirror Wednesday, May 24. "It’s primary care, family doctors. We will start at Branson and the long-term plan is to move to other satellite locations." This was welcome news for Dufferin Street and Steeles Avenue resident Shelley Stillman, who made a presentation before a NYGH board of governors meeting Tuesday, May 23. "I think this is good news," she said in an interview Wednesday morning. "It’s not what we want, but it’s something." In her presentation, Stillman, a member of the Branson Community Action Group (BCAG), an ad hoc group formed after news of the closure broke, noted many area residents are immigrants or working poor and must rely on public transit, which would

"You are pulling the rug out from under our community," she told the board. "Many of us only found out within the last

six weeks that the Urgent Care Centre is closing.yes, we know you rent the facility and understand that it is in need of repair, but everything needs maintenance and repair. There is no other facility of its kind close to us. The effect of re-

ducing operating hours and the lack of promotion, visibility and utilization has created a negative trend that could have been avoided. This certainly is the view of the community." BCAG held a rally

Wednesday, May 10 outside North York General Hospital and followed it up a week later with a rally at Queen’s Park. During the Queen’s Park rally, York Centre Councillor James Pasternak said he opposed the decision to close Branson. Ideally, he would like the Urgent Care Centre to remain open until the lease ends in 2019. "One thing you don’t want to do when it comes to medical services is to provide instability, and that’s exactly what they (government) are doing," Pasternak said. The Branson Ambulatory Care Centre also houses the total joint assessment centre, Gale and Graham Wright Prostate Centre, cataract high volume centre, mental health services, an adolescent eating disorders program, a diabetes education centre, and medical imaging. Programs and services will be transferred to the General site, and possibly satellite locations, over the next two years. - With files from Jasmine Hui

North York Community Council to vote on issue June 13

Colleen Rabie, who has two kids enrolled at John Fisher and is a member of the school’s parent-teacher council, said the TDSB has not been forthcoming about construction impacts despite pledges for transparency. "If they were interested in working with the parents on the concerns instead of behind closed doors that could improve things a great deal," said Rabie during a Wednesday morning rally opposing the project. "Things have been promised and then not followed through on." Gershon had to apologize last year after she was spotted playing a game on

her phone during a meeting held at the school on the construction concerns. She also did not turn up at the OMB hearing for the project. "She’s an elected official who is supposed to advocate on behalf of the children she represents, and she has not done that," Rabie said. In an email to the Metroland Media Toronto, Gershon said she has "vigorously" worked with parents on safety at the site. She also included a letter from an unnamed parent praising her involvement. "I have attended innumerable meetings, written countless emails, met with officials from the city and Province and communicated often with parents," said Gershon in the email.

Dan Pearce/Metroland

John Fisher Public school students and their parents held a rally yesterday morning to protest a planned condominium development on this property at 18-30 Erskine Ave. which is right beside the school. "I have been assured by the TDSB staff that all of the 14 recommendations of

the risk management plan have been meticulously addressed."

Don Valley West city councillor Jaye Robinson, who spoke at the rally along with colleague Josh Matlow about the construction concerns, said parents have told her the safety plan agreed with KG Group - which was unanimously approved by the TDSB’s Planning and Priorities committee prior to the board vote - is watered down. According to the plan, developer KG Group will pay $500,000 for the safety measures, with the board responsible for approximately $65,000. The money will pay for a 12-foot construction fence to surround the site, air conditioners for some classrooms as well as monitoring for air quality, noise and vibrations plus

enforcement during construction.Provisions were also made for designating parking space for the school. "The number one concern for everyone is the kids’ safety, and a lot of parents feel that’s not being addressed," Robinson said. In April, Robinson and the rest of North York Community Council voted to defer approving a demolitions permit for the project, pending approval of the TDSB safety plan. The matter is scheduled to be revisited at the June 13 meeting.

Multi-Tenant House Zoning Approach

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com

Public Consultation Meeting Learn about the City's proposed zoning approach for Multi-Tenant (Rooming) Houses and share your thoughts. All meetings 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday June 6 University of Toronto Scarborough Campus, Room HW305 1265 MilitaryTrail, Scarborough Wednesday June 7 James Cardinal Mcguigan School, Cafeteria 1440 Finch Ave W, NorthYork Monday June 12 Oriole Community Centre, Multipurpose Room B 2975 Don Mills Road, NorthYork Tuesday June 13 Stephen Leacock Community Centre, Main Floor 2520 Birchmount Rd, Scarborough

A Jane Street and Finch Avenue organization aimed at mentoring young people to be productive members of society is hosting a fundraising gala Saturday, May 27. Operating since 2003, Inner City Outreach (ICO) is a grassroots nonprofit organization offering a homework program, a basketball league, mentorship, and summer camps to some of the city’s most vulnerable youth. ICO runs programs one to three times per week

during the school year at Oakdale Park Middle School, Yorkwoods Public School, Brookview Public School, and out of ICO headquarters at Christian Centre Church, 4545 Jane St. Students enrolled at the three schools can attend ICO’s programs at their respected learning institutions, while neighbourhood youngsters not enrolled at the schools can participate in programs at Christian Centre Church. ICO also employs area youth to act as leaders, something executive direc-

tor Jennifer Jegede believes is imperative for setting children on the right track. "They sit beside (students) and help," she said, adding some 100 students are currently enrolled in ICO programs. "The positive interaction they have with adults will help them later in life." The gala’s fundraising goal is $20,000, with proceeds going toward funding a full-time after-school program five days a week out of the church. For gala tickets or information visit http://innercityoutreach.ca/gala2017/
