A young North York philanthropist will sell lemonade Sunday to raise funds to help find a cure for Angelman syndrome (AS). The fundraiser will be held at 43 Fairholme Ave., near Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue, from 9 a.m. to noon. Sunday Since starting her fundraiser last summer, Na’ama Uzan, 5, has raised $25,000 for the neurological condition affecting her brother, Nadav, 7. Na’ama, who runs lemonade stand fundraisers in the summer and hot chocolate stand fundraisers in the winter, hands the proceeds over to the Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics (FAST). According to the Canadian Angelman Syndrome Society, AS is a neuro-genetic disorder characterized by intellectual and developmental delay, sleep disturbance, seizures, jerky movements (especially hand-flapping), frequent laughter or smiling, and usually a happy demeanor. It’s diagnosed in about one in 25,000 live births.

Hong Weil Xing finds another treat during the Parkway Forest Community Church’s Easter egg hunt held Sunday at Forest Manor Public School.

The oldest house in North York still standing on its original site now has a plaque marking its significance to local history. Built in 1824 with its steep gabled roof in a Georgian architectural style, John Bales House is located within Earl Bales Park on the south-east corner of Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue. The plaque was unveiled yesterday at Dublin Heights Elementary and Middle School where the grades 2 and 3 students learned about the history of the house just a few minutes from their school. “History is really about how things change over a period of time,” said Kaitlin Wainwright, director of programming at Heritage Toronto, citing the importance of teaching students to recognize that local history is valuable, interesting and tangible. A plaque is one way of telling stories about history, she added, noting it was a “collaborative >>>house, page 6

ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com Residents of the Flemingdon neighbourhood now have more access to free family law services as part of a new initiative by Legal Aid Ontario. The service is provided by family lawyer Ana Rico at Flemingdon Community Legal Services, 1 Leaside Park Dr., every Friday. “We provide legal advice about a variety of family law topics so that would be separation, divorce, custody, access, child support and spousal support,” Rico said. “We provide information about the family court process, including how to go about getting mediation. We also help fill out court forms for people who are representing themselves.” Rico also makes an assessment to determine if the client could be referred to a lawyer that’s covered by Legal Aid. Rico’s service is geared toward those making less than $19,000 per year. But people who don’t meet the low-income criteria are still entitled to 20 minutes of free legal advice. Rico said she sees people from all walks of life. “I’ve seen newcomers, and very vulnerable people, people who have experienced domestic violence and people who for a variety of reasons are unable to pay child support so they need help with reducing or changing their child support amounts.” Anyone interested in the service should first call the family law co-ordinator who will conduct a needs assessment and perform a brief eligibility test before booking an appointment with Rico. The co-ordinator can be reached at 416696-2992.

oronto is a fantastic city! You can do virtually anything your heart desires, and with today’s launch of Enjoy Toronto – Metroland Media Toronto’s newest online Arts & Entertainment portal – you can start enjoying so much of what this great city has to offer – all from a community-focused perspective. Toronto was recently ranked the best place to live, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit, a unit of The Economist magazine. There were 50 global cities included. Granted, Toronto has ranked high in similar studies before, so it’s no surprise the city welcomes more than 25 million visitors annually, spending more than $5 billion and more than $1.5 billion on food and entertainment. However, what many tourists understand we Torontonians sometimes overour view look, even take for granted. Despite Toronto being conArts and culture sidered one of the most livable in the world, life for the make Toronto a cities millions of people who call world-class city this city home is ‘wake up, go to work, come home, repeat’. There is so much more to hear, see, read, taste, and do from Etobicoke to Scarborough, North York to Lake Ontario, Parkdale to the Beach. With today’s launch of Enjoy Toronto (www. insidetoronto.com/EnjoyToronto), we’ve taken a look at what was missing from the pages of the local media, and online. What we discovered is there are so many amazing stories about Torontonians starting a band that suddenly becomes huge (Broken Social Scene comes to mind), or a filmmaker who grew up in the city and is now world-renowned (David Cronenberg for one), or an award-winning author who started filling pages in Hogtown (Margaret Atwood for instance). We took all those great stories and put them under one roof: Enjoy Toronto. When visiting the site, make sure to click around the various sections – Hear, See, Read, Taste, and Do – and get an idea of some of the events, movies, music and stories told by Torontonians, both new and old. We build the city we want to live in, and not just in a brick-and-mortar way. The arts and culture scene across the city adds to what a truly world-class city is all about. We owe it to ourselves to get to know Toronto through different lenses; taking in the arts, entertainment and culture builds a better city.

Guess what happened at the fortune teller? A visit to the psychic leaves many questions unanswered I was out walking around on the weekend and strolled by a building with a sign out front advertising a psychic on the second floor. It caught my eye, so I thought I’d drop in for a chat. Psychic: “Hi there, I’m Cassiopeia. But just call me Cassie. What’s your name?” Me: “Oops, sorry. I guess I’m in the wrong room. I was looking for the psychic. Must be down the hall. Have a nice day, Cassie.” Psychic: “Don’t leave. You’re in the right room. That’s me. In the flesh and flowing robes.” Me: “The name’s Jamie. But just call me Jamie. And shouldn’t you know that, being a psychic and all? I

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY figured that’s got to be like page one of Psychic 101.” Psychic: “It’s actually before page one, Jamie. It’s in the preface. But I didn’t say I didn’t know it. I always ask that up front to get the old crystal ball rolling. So how can I help you today?” Me: “You don’t know that either?” Psychic: “I always ask that, too. Force of habit. So, you came here for a reading, right?” Me: “Are you sure I’m in the right room? I thought I was the one who was supposed to be asking all the questions. I figured that’s also got to be on page one of Psychic 101.” Psychic: “It’s actually in the preface, too. It’s a really long preface. What can I say? But I wasn’t asking because I don’t know. It’s just more small

talk. I don’t start the clock until I get paid. It’s an adorable grandmother clock, by the way. You want to see it?” Me: “Again I ask, shouldn’t you know that, too, Cassie?” Psychic: “And again I respond, I don’t get into any actual fortune telling stuff without first being remunerated. So enough with the idle chit-chat. Show me the money.” Me: “OK, you win. I’ll put it on a credit card. Is Visa alright?” Psychic: “Sorry, I don’t take Visa.” Me: “How about MasterCard?” Psychic: “I’m afraid not. I don’t take MasterCard either.” Me: “No worries. It’ll have to be my debit, then.” Psychic: “I hate to break it you, but you’re barking up the wrong tree. I don’t take any plastic, period. Do you have a cheque, perhaps?” Me: “Shouldn’t ...”

Psychic: “Uh, uh, uh. Remember what I said earlier.” Me: “My bad. I’ll look in my back pocket. I’m pretty sure I have a chequebook in there.” Psychic: “Don’t bother. I don’t take cheques either. It’s got to be cash only.” Me: “So why’d you let me go on and on like that if all you take is cash?” Psychic: “I was just messing with you to help break the ice. Just because I’m a psychic, who says I don’t have a sense of humour?” Me: “Oh no, you don’t. You know how this business works. If you want to know that, you’re going to have to fork over some money to me first. And unlike you, I take anything but cash. But you know that, right?” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at jamie.wayne@sympatico.ca

House remains where it was built in 1824 >>>from page 1 effort” to commemorate the John Bales House and the family that owned it. Members of the North York Historical Society contributed through fundraising and research for the information on the plaque. “Today is one day in a very long process that goes into creating a plaque like this one,” said Glenn Bonnetta, president of the North York Historical Society, estimating

that it took about three years. “We’re pleased that the Bales family, who contributed so much to North York, is also being honoured.” Dorothy Floyd, a great-greatgrandchild of John Bales, attended the unveiling along with Councillor James Pasternak and school trustee Howard Kaplan. She recounted her family’s history beginning with John Bales and Elizabeth Bales who built the house on 60 acres of land they purchased

more than 190 years ago. Since 1824, the house has been lived in continuously for more than 150 years by the Bales family, then subsequently the greenskeeper of the York Downs Golf and Country Club when the house was sold and incorporated in 1887. In 1975, the house and surrounding land was purchased and converted into Earl Bales Park, which was named after John Bales’ great-grandson Robert Earl Bales,

the youngest reeve to serve the Township of North York. “It remains a tangible memory of the early days in Canada,” said Floyd, who noted as a former teacher that she was pleased to address the attentive students that day. “They probably know the park a lot more than I do.” The plaque itself will be installed in front of the John Bales House at a date yet to be scheduled.

Image/COURTESY

The plaque will be installed on the John Bales House located within Earl Bales Park at Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue.

Sunnybrook Hospital’s iNavigait program aims to keep pedestrians safe on our streets

SAFE CROSSING FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com With a high number of pedestrian fatalities this year – and the youngest victim aged 57 – Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is trying to get the word out about safety through its foot-travelling education awareness program. From Jan. 1 to April 5, 14 pedestrian fatalities have been reported, according to Toronto Traffic Services. During the same time period last year, three fatalities occurred. Joanne Banfield, manager of trauma injury programs for Sunnybrook, helped develop the iNavigait program at the Bayview and Eglinton avenues hospital in 2005, which replaced the Dare Devil program she founded in 1997. While Dare Devil focused specifically on seniors, iNavigait (“i” for taking responsibility, and “gait” because a strong gait is needed when walking) is for all age categories, with programming tailored to specific age groups. “It was developed because of the number of pedestrian patients we saw in the trauma room,” she said. “Collectively, seniors are over-represented.” According to iNavigait, “despite an overall reduction in pedestrian trauma, the elderly continue to have the highest pedestrian mortality and morbidity rates of any Canadian population

segment,” it said in a recent report. Not only is the number of pedestrian fatalities this year alarming, but there has been no consensus to the time of day or the location of the collisions that have occurred, according to a recent release by organization Bringing An Awareness of Seniors Safety Issues to the Community (B.A.S.S.I.C.), of which Sunnybrook is a member. Other members include Baycrest Centre Health Sciences, City of Toronto Transportation Services, OPP, Toronto Fire Services, Toronto Police Service and Toronto Public Health. According to Toronto Police Service, half the fatalities this year have occurred mid-block, while the majority of the others have occurred at intersections and have involved turning vehicles. Many pedestrian collisions and fatalities occur during early evening hours just after daylight saving time in November, with decreased daylight playing a role in reduction of pedestrian visibility, Banfield said. And with the City of Toronto forecasting a 42 per cent increase in the senior population from 2006 to 2031, the number of elderly pedestrian fatalities will only go up if the current trend continues. Banfield said she makes presentations at seniors centres to highlight the need of pedestrian safety. “Make sure you’re not

distracted, be visible, wear reflective material, if the (traffic light) countdown is going, wait for a new signal to start before crossing, make eye contact with the driver,” she said. As for why older people tend to be victims, Banfield said it’s a combination of reasons, i n c l u d i n g s l ow e r response time and impaired senses. “When you’re older, you might not move as quickly,” she said. “Vision and hearing might not be as good as it was. (In winter) people wear long black coats, a scarf, a hood and aren’t as visible. If you’re walking along the sidewalk, you’re not thinking of cars backing out of driveways. You can never assume the driver sees you.” Sometimes there’s no obvious reason why older adults are the victims of pedestrian fatalities, she said, adding it can come down to living in a distracted society. “Are we busier and busier and not paying attention? At the end of the day, we need to get back to the basics. Look both ways before crossing the street. Those few seconds can save your life.”

young children and seniors are over-represented in the pedestrian injury statistics

so far this year in Toronto, 14 pedestrian fatalities have been reported to police

iNavigait’s message: cross the street as if your life depends on it

B.A.S.S.I.C. (Bringing An Awareness of Seniors Safety Issues to the Community) recommends the following tips to keep pedestrians safe:

at intersections ◗ Be aware of your walking speed to ensure you are able to cross in the allotted time ◗ Ensure you do not enter roadways once the countdown has started ◗ Stop and look (left-right-left) before stepping off the curb ◗ Cross when all cars have come to a complete stop ◗ Make eye contact with the driver ◗ Draw attention to yourself - be visible, wear bright colours

general tips ◗ Don’t talk on a cellphone or be otherwise distracted while crossing the street ◗ Be cautious and assume that drivers do not see you ◗ Don’t assume the vehicle will be able to stop even if you have the right of way, don’t step onto the roadway until the car has come to a compete stop ◗ Use mobility, hearing or visual aids as recommended or required ◗ Wear proper and well-maintained footwear ◗ Cross at intersections with traffic signals, marked crosswalks or stop signs ◗ Use your eyes before your feet ◗ Cross the street as if your life depends on it because it does

transportation Diamond public panel wDavenport

Metrolinx is set to reject an official request from the city to have Toronto’s chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat sit on a public panel studying options for improving the Davenport Diamond rail-crossing lands. Before a council vote approving the request took place, Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins said while city staff is providing “key” assistance for the project, the panel itself should be open only to residents. Councillor Ana Bailao (Davenport) tabled the motion at city council last week to have Keesmaat join the 36-person panel to ensure city planning standards are taken into consideration for the project.

set to KICK OFF IN JUNE wIMPROVEMENTS

The Queens Quay revitalization under way by Waterfront Toronto now has an official opening date. CEO John Campbell announced the restoration of the waterfront’s main avenue will be officially

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT unveiled to the public on June 19. Campbell, who made the announcement during last week’s Waterfront Town Hall, also promised a “big party” to celebrate the opening of the $130-million project that is intended to transform Queens Quay from a drab roadway – considered one of the ugliest on the continent – to one of the city’s most iconic streets. It’s already been announced the project won’t be fully completed until after the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. ADDS NEW STREETCAR TO FLEET wTTC

Toronto’s delayed new streetcar fleet expanded by one last week. The TTC announced the low-floor streetcar, number 4406, had entered service as of April 1. It will run for the time being, along with the four new streetcars already in service, on the Harbourfront

509 line as the TTC continues track replacement work on the 510 Spadina line, where the new rides made their debut in 2014. The TTC said it can have all new vehicles in service by the end of 2019. EXPRESS EXPECTED TO LAUNCH IN MAY wUP

With the Union Pearson (UP) Express getting set to make its debut, Metrolinx says it will announce an official launch date once safety and emergency testing for the four-stop rail connection between Union Station and Pearson International Airport is completed. The testing is scheduled to take place Saturday, April 11 and Tuesday, April 28 and is intended to evaluate UP’s readiness in case of emergency. Part of the testing will include simulating an evacuation of a train as well as testing how quickly first responders can be summoned in a real emergency. Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. Allen Road scheduled to close for spring maintenance DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com

*Promotion is valid from now until May 3, 2015. No tax apply on purchase of 1500$ and more on regular priced item. Some conditions may apply. Details in store.

april

Allen Road will be closed for spring maintenance the weekend of April 17 to 20 from Eglinton Avenue to Sheppard Avenue. The southern stretch of the road from Eglinton to Lawrence Avenue will close at 9 p.m. Friday, April 17, while the area north of Lawrence up to Sheppard will be closed at 11 p.m. The road won’t re-open until Monday, April 20 at about 5 a.m. The work will not affect transit. Buses will take a slightly different route to get to Downsview/ Sheppard West subway station. Hector Moreno, manager for road operations for the city’s Transportation Services, said people should see an improvement immediately

Fri-Mon

17-20

when the work is done. The top layer of the road will be ground and paved, particularly south of Hwy. 401 where every lane northbound and southbound will be repaved. Road sweepers will be deployed, the catch basins will be cleaned and repaired, guardrails will be repaired, lines will be repainted, street lighting will be rehabilitated, some bridge and fence repair will occur and dead trees and branches will be removed from the road’s embankments. “A lot of this stuff is left over from last year’s ice storm,” Moreno said of the dead branches. “There’s a lot of debris

on the banks at the side of the boulevard and on the side of the road. This tends to cause a lot of issues, particularly during spring rain or in the fall, causing flooding.” He said the maintenance work will involve many departments, including the city’s Transportation Services, Forestry, Pavement Markings and Signs, Solid Waste Management Services, and Toronto Hydro and various contractors. “It’s a joint venture from many different agencies,” Moreno said. The city has an alternative date of May 8 to 11, with the same road closure sequence, in case work must be postponed due to weather.

By the end of 2017, as the baby boomer population ages, that number is projected to increase to 300,000. Metroland is investigating the kind of impact this dramatic increase will have on individuals, families and the health-care system. Are we prepared for it? Former Humber River Hospital doctor earns neuroscience honour FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com The former chief of psychiatry for Humber River Hospital (HRH) has been awarded for his lifelong contributions to neuroscience. D r. A G e o r g e Aw a d was recently honoured with the Andrew C. Leon Distinguished Career Award from the International Society for Central Nervous System Clinical Trials and Methodology (ISCTM), of which he is a founding member and first founding president. A professor emeritus in the department of psychiatry and on the faculty of graduate studies at the Institute of Medical Science, University of Toronto, Awad held the top position at HRH’s psychiatry department for 13 years, which was created when the three HRH sites merged. His reign ended last year. A University of Toronto neuroscience professor for 40 years, Awad founded the ISCTM when talks began with four colleagues in 2003 for the need to create an international forum to include system clinical trials, he said. “At that time there was concern with the process of drug development and side effects,” Awad said. “To develop new psychiatric medicine is $1 billion from beginning to end. It’s a huge

investment. My concern was if it was not right, it wouldn’t be used.” After meeting informally with the four colleagues, Awad decided it was time to get an international group of people together to provide experience and advice on how to improve drug development. “The five of us started (the ISCTM),” he said. “I was chosen as the founding president and the first (ISCTM) meeting was in Montreal in 2004.” Now internationally known, Awad said all of ISCTM’s objectives for improving methodology have been successful.

Traffic monitoring has a price One of the big problems that Mayor John Tory came into office promising to solve was also one of the most ubiquitous: traffic. He started out strong and without even a council vote behind him, rallying city staff and law enforcement into a blitz against illegal parking during rush hour, and very quickly claimed at least anecdotal success. It was harder to quantify, though, because as it turns out the city doesn’t really do much to reliably monitor the intensity of rush hour traffic. It looks as though that’s about to change. O n T u e s d a y , To r y announced the city would be looking at high-tech ways to monitor traffic density, pedestrian congestion, bicycle efficiency, all of that. How? Big Data. This, of course, is a simple phrase for a complexity of information about all of us provided by everything from bank transactions to web-page visits – but principally, in this case, by our smart phones.

david nickle the city The idea is to use the smart phone networks that help us use our navigation functions to tell traffic planners where we are, and what we’re doing. So whether it’s a crowd of us trying to decipher the scramble intersection at Yonge and Dundas, or a line of us trying to manage a left turn at Yonge and Sheppard, city traffic planners will know. For the purpose of traffic management, it’s a powerful tool. Unchecked, it is a privacy nightmare. Of course, Big Data is unchecked. Edward Snowdon, currently hiding in Russia, provided evidence of just how unchecked it is. Huge amounts of information about our private lives are neatly filed in NSA (National Security Agency) computers in the United States. Almost as much is in the hands of Google and Facebook and

I will pay $15 for the kettle

even of the developers of games about angry birds, and those little flashlight apps on our smartphones. We signed the end user agreement on that information a long time ago and barely realized it. Given that, maybe it’s worth it to allow a little more information about our whereabouts to be collected and collated, so the city can manage its traffic light energy grid more efficiently and keep streetcars running more effectively. It is naïve, however, to expect that Toronto will be able to access that kind of service without giving up quite a lot of the presumed privacy of its citizens – and particularly as the city engages private sector data mining firms to do the work, it’s unreasonable to think the best ones will limit their measurements to the amount of time it takes to drive the Don Valley Parkway from Queen to Eglinton at four on a Tuesday.
