Drama, music, dance at Yorkwoods Library The young people of the Jane and Finch community are giving back to their peers at Tweenfest, a free arts event catering to children aged eight to 12. The event, put on by Upfront Theatre Foundation, is happening at Yorkwoods Public Library, 1785 Finch Friday Ave. W., on Aug. 14 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. There will be drama, music, dance and more. Among the performers are Honest Eriamiator AKA Dhatafricanboi, Creation, Khaliah, supreme steppers, and others. Refreshments will be provided. A non-profit organization, Upfront Theatre Foundation gets youths involved in the community through culture, education and social programs. Through Tweenfest, they are producing an event that’s catering to children who live near Jane Street and Finch Avenue. The youths organizing the event have spent countless hours preparing, including producing a short film that will be screened at Tweenfest. The film features personal documentaries that show how the participants’ struggles have helped shape their unique identities.

Sunnybrook veterans honoured National tribute for Canadians who served in Second World War In front of a packed house inside the veterans wing of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, 15 Second World War servicemen and women were honoured by the federal government Friday for their sacrifices. The selected veterans, who were aged 99 and older, received commemorative lapel pins and certificates of recognition as a tribute to their service, while the other 425 veterans living inside the wing of the Bayview and Eglinton avenues hospital accepted theirs shortly afterwards. “Today, there are 33 million Canadians who owe our freedom to all of you,” Minister of Veterans Affairs and Durham MP Erin O’Toole said during
the ceremony before handing out the pins and certificates with Don Valley West M P Jo h n Carmichael. To mark the 75th anniversary of Canada’s engagement in the Second World War, the federal government announced a national tribute Sept. 10, 2014 to honour living veterans of that war. Canadians who served at least one day with the Canadian forces, or with any other allied force including the Canadian or British Merchant Navy, either at home or abroad during the Second World War, are eligible to apply for the commemorative lapel pin and

After the war he owned a drug store, and wrote an untitled book about his life at age 80. Sunnybrook began welcoming Second World War servicemen and woman in 1948 and is now Canada’s largest veteran’ care facility.

An elderly couple was injured after their car crashed into the back of a cement truck Tuesday. Police said a Toyota Corolla driven by an 88-year-old man was heading north on Keele Street when it smashed into a Mack cement truck, which had stopped to make a left turn onto westbound Maple Leaf Drive just after 11:30 a.m.
The collision caused the Corolla to go out of control, coming to a stop on the east side of Keele Street. The driver suffered lifethreatening injuries, while his 80-year-old female passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Both were taken to hospital.

York University’s Ring of Fire procession to hit downtown Aug. 9 York University is helping to set the mood for the 2015 Parapan Am Games by putting on a 300-person street procession through downtown during the Games this Sunday. The Ring of Fire procession, with commissioned work by internationally renowned Trinidadian artist Marlon Griffith, will wend itself from Queen’s Park, along University Avenue and end at Nathan Phillips Square in front of City Hall. The procession will take place from noon to 2 p.m. The procession is based on the Anishinaabe Seven Grandfather Teachings: wisdom, courage, respect, honesty, truth, humility and love. Time for the Parapan Am Games to shine W hile we’re still basking in the glow of the success of the recent Pan Am Games in Toronto, it’s important not to forget that an equally prestigious athletic event opens tomorrow. The Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games run from Aug. 7 to 15, and residents can do their part to make these Games just as successful as the Pan Ams. The Parapans officially open Friday with ceremonies at York University’s CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium starting at 5:45 p.m. The Parapan Am Games in Toronto will feature more than 1,600 athletes from 28 countries competing in 15 sports. As was the case with the Pan Am Games, competition will take place at a our view number of Toronto venues. There’s track and field at York Celebrate University, swimming, sitting and wheelchair tennis our athletes volleyball at the University of Toronto Aug. 7 to 15 Scarborough, and wheelchair basketball at the Mattamy Centre downtown. There’s archery at Varsity Stadium, and the cycling road races at Ontario Place. Markham, Mississauga, Milton and Whitby are also hosting events for those hoping to catch Parapan action beyond Toronto’s borders. As always, these Games serve as a qualifier for the Paralympics. That’s especially important for a number of top Canadian athletes and teams including the men’s wheelchair basketball team. Our men’s teams are three-time gold medal winners at the Paralympics (including gold at the London 2012 Games) and they are looking to continue their golden ways come the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Their first step on that road comes at the Toronto Parapan Am Games. The Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team also has an impressive resume, having won Paralympic gold medals in 1992, 1996 and 2000. The excitement for the Parapan Am Games begins this week with the arrival of the torch relay, which will be in Toronto today with stops at Corus Quay, Inukshuk Park, Queens Quay and Yonge Street, and David Pecaut Square for a community celebration at 12:30 p.m. that will feature a guest appearance by Rick Hansen. Tomorrow, the torch relay visits Variety Village in Scarborough, Queen’s Park, and the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto on Spadina Road in advance of the opening ceremonies.

Straight talk about the dog days of summer
M
y message box got a serious workout over the long weekend. It was standing and screaming room only in there. Everybody was whining up a storm. But it wasn’t about the hot weather. It was about the phrase du jour referring to it. Q. Jamie, I always hate the beginning of August. The only expression we ever hear is the ‘dog days of summer’. We’re bombarded with it. The dog days of summer, the dog days of summer, the dog days of summer. Enough already. This has been going on for donkey’s years. No other creatures get even a mention until they’re over. It makes me angry as a bear, I tell ya. When are we finally going to get equal time in the summer for the rest of the animal kingdom? – Gord the Gorilla A. In the next few minutes, Gordo. I don’t want
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY to let the cat out of the bag, but a little bird told me that by the end of the column all will be forgotten and you’ll be happy as a clam. Q. Do you really mean it, Jamie? I’ve had ants in my pants over this since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. – Karina the Kangaroo A. Cross my heart. This comes straight from the horse’s mouth. Q. Wait a minute. I thought you just got through saying it was a bird that gave you the news. This all sounds rather fishy if you ask me. – Arnold the Armadillo A. Don’t get your feathers in a bunch. The horse called first. The bird tweeted right after. OK? Q. Jamie, do you mind if I talk turkey for a second?
– Penelope the Peacock A. Would you be a lamb and try back around Thanksgiving? I promised to resolve this dog days of summer controversy before the end of the column. If I don’t do it, I have a hunch I’ll be hearing about it until the cows come home. Q. You’ll be hearing about it long after they arrive, too. No other animals can get on the map this time of year. It’s the nature of the beast, I’m afraid. Don’t you think it’s time to accept that you’re barking up the wrong tree? – Zoe the Zebra. A. On the contrary, I was about to pull a rabbit out of a hat here. Anything is possible. All you have to do is believe. Q. Yeah and pigs might fly, too. Sorry, but I’m with Zoe on this. – Wally the Walrus A. Boo hoo. I’m crying crocodile tears. I hate to break it to the two of you,
but it’s all just water off this duck’s back. I guarantee you’ll both be eating crow. But it’s not up to me. I’ll leave the deciding vote to the final questioner of the day. Q. I believe. I believe. I believe. Now, with that out of the way, let’s get to the most important part of this discussion. After I’m done eating, any chance of going back for seconds? As far as I’m concerned one can never get enough crow and you can see by my attached selfie that I’m a growing boy. – Harvey the Hippotamus A. That I can, and thanks for tipping the scales in my favour. But as for the extra helping? Well, I wouldn’t count my chickens before they hatch if I were you. Over the past two years, a group of Aboriginal seniors living in Toronto have been engaging with a collection of First Nations objects housed at the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto to spark memories, create meaning and connect with indigenous cultures. An exhibit at North York
Similar to choosing between contact lenses or glasses, you can decide with your hearing professional which hearing aid style would best suit you. Both styles have approximately the same performance and functions, but are fitted to the ear differently.
It’s almost a shame this technology isn’t more visible! Open-fit and Invisible-In-the-Canal (IIC) hearing aids are smaller and more beautiful than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet open-fit hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid--now with wireless technology--provides all of the outstanding features and benefits you want in a digital hearing aid, minus the stigma that came with wearing one in the past.

Finch West Maintenance and Storage Facility The Project
Metrolinx has completed an Environmental Project Report (EPR) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08 for the Finch West Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF). Metrolinx intends to proceed with the project in accordance with the EPR. In 2010, the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change issued a Notice to Proceed for the Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) including an 11 kilometer section extending from Humber College in northern Etobicoke to Keele Street. The EPR prepared for that project identified the location of the MSF as a potential site to store and maintain light rail vehicles (LRVs), but the report did not address the potential environmental effects of the MSF. Consequently, a new environmental assessment for the Finch West MSF was completed in accordance with the Transit Project Assessment Process. The new 8 hectare Finch West MSF is required to support the new LRVs that will operate along the Finch West LRT corridor. The Finch West MSF will accommodate a maximum of 75 LRVs with capacity allowance for maintenance and storage of some LRVs for the future Jane Street LRT corridor. Four main buildings will be located on site including the Main Repair Shop Facility, Maintenance of Way Building, Operations Company Building and Electrical Substation. Other elements of the site also include an outdoor storage yard, LRVs hand-over platform, sanding silo, employee parking facilities and stormwater management features. In addition, track connection to the Finch West LRT corridor will be provided from York Gate Boulevard to allow for LRVs access/egress.

These include if the Minister is of the opinion that: • The transit project may have a negative impact on a matter of provincial importance that relates to the natural environment or has cultural heritage value or interest; or • The transit project may have a negative impact on a constitutionally protected Aboriginal or treaty right. Before exercising the authority referred to above, the Minister is required to consider any written objections to the transit project that he or she may receive within 30 days after the Notice of Completion of the EPR is first published. If you have discussed your issues with the proponent and you object to the project, you can provide a written submission to the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change by no later than August 31, 2015 to the address provided below. All submissions must clearly indicate that an objection is being submitted and describe any negative impacts to matters of provincial importance (natural/cultural environment) or Aboriginal rights.
The Process The potential environmental effects of this transit project was assessed and an EPR was prepared according to the transit project assessment process as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings. Dr. Wayne Pulver honoured for service to dentistry FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com

Dr. Wayne Pulver received the Ontario Dental Association’s Barnabas W. Day Award for Distinguished Service.
A North York endodontist has been honoured with a distinguished service award by the Ontario Dental Association (ODA). Dr. Wayne Pulver received the Barnabas Day Award for Distinguished Service during a recent ceremony to install the association’s new president at the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto downtown. “It was really nice,” he said of the honour. “It’s very nice to be recognized by my peers.” A past president of the ODA, the Bayview Avenue and Hwy. 401 resident said he found out about his award when the association’s thenpresident, Dr. Gerald Smith, requested a dinner meeting with Pulver and a colleague under the guise of discussing dental specialist issues, he said. When he sat down at the table, there was a picture of the late Dr. Barnabas Day under his plate, Pulver said.
“
I chose dentistry because I like the manual part of it, using my hands and interacting with patients. – Dr. Wayne Pulver
“That’s how I found out,” he said, laughing. “It’s usual for the president to take out honourees. I did the same thing when I was president.” Awarded annually, the Barnabas Day Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the dental profession, either sustained service to the profession for 20 years or more, or a single outstanding contribution. In special circumstances, this award may be given to an individual in the human sciences (not exclusive of other fields) for an outstanding contribution to dentistry. The award commemorates Day, who practised dentistry during the 1850s at a time
when the profession was unregulated by government. Day led a group of dedicated dentists to establish the Ontario Dental Association in 1867, while simultaneously lobbying to regulate dentistry in Canada. Day was the first named officer of Canada’s Royal College of Dental Surgeons. “ The Ontario Dental Association was very pleased to honour Dr. Wayne Pulver with the Barnabas Day Award for Distinguished Service in May, the highest award bestowed upon any of our members, in recognition of his 20 years of outstanding contributions to organized dentistry,” Dr. Victor Kutcher, president and spokesperson for the ODA, said in an email. “Dr. Pulver served as president of the ODA from 1998 to 1999. Besides being an advocate for the dental profession, he is also a respected clinician in his field and a dedicated educator.” After graduating from the
University of Toronto in 1973, Pulver did an internship at a Boston hospital for a year, during which he was exposed to different areas of medical specialities, he said. It was there he decided to focus his career on endodontics, and went on to do a two-year post-graduate course at Harvard School of Medicine. “I chose dentistry because I like the manual part of it, using my hands and interacting with patients,” he said. “I like the personal relationship with people.” An endodontist for more than 20 years who currently practices in the Willowdale and Sheppard avenues area, Pulver has served as head of endodontics at Mount Sinai Hospital, and president of the ODA, Ontario Society of Endodontists, Canadian Academy of Endodontics, and George Hare Endodontic Study Club. He’s also a lecturer and board advisor to Real World Endo.

Does your home have room for an animal in need? Welcome to our August pets, She-Ra and Grace, who would both love to hear the words “welcome home.” She-Ra “Princess of Feline Power” is an amazing sevenyear-old cat available for adoption from All Creatures Rescue. This beautiful tortoiseshell lady has been bounced around a lot in her life and is looking for a stable and forever home –
lorraine houston critter chatter once and for all. She-Ra has so much to offer: she’s good with other animals (dogs, cats, even bunnies), loves to cuddle, is not only clever and confident but playful, too. She-Ra is spayed,
microchipped, current on vaccines and her adoption comes with a supply of cat food, treats and other of kitty goodies. Volunteers don’t understand why she hasn’t been scooped up as everyone who meets her loves her. Contact Daria at allcreaturesoutreach@gmail.com for more information. See She-Ra online at www.face-

She was moved to SPIN, a rescue group dedicated to helping all sizes of poodles. Although Grace is approximately 13 years young and blind, she is perky, playful and even a little goofy at times. “She just wants to follow you around, sit on your lap and love life,” says Bernice McNutt, SPIN president. “Don’t tell her she’s 13 and to act her age – she’s far too fun for that.” For more information on Grace, visit www.standardpoodlesinneed.com or email standardpoodlesinneed@gmail.com

Toronto parks are no place for TTC ponders fare increase to help offset budget shortfall foragers, city warns residents DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com T h e To r o n t o Tr a n s i t Commission’s long-held $3 adult cash fare could be among the fares to rise in 2016, as the commission’s budget committee asked for a report including that and other options last week. The fare hike would help deal with a $99-million shortfall that’s predicted for 2016, soaking up about $30 million of that. The committee is asking for the report to look at a number of scenarios, including hiking Metropass fares and having the fare increase entirely borne by the cash fares, as well as simply spreading the fare increase
across various media. It will also study the impact that the Presto fare card will have on fare structure once it’s implemented at the end of 2016. It will be a “very, very delicate issue” said TTC commissioner and city councillor Joe Mihevc, who sits on the commission’s budget committee. “It is true that many people from vulnerable communities find three dollars hard enough in and of itself – and you can’t raise it 10 cents, you’ve got to raise it at least a quarter. And yet raising it is a damn difficult thing to do.” Mihevc said that at the same time, raising the fares on tokens and Metropasses
can’t bring them too close to the cash fare, or people will simply start paying cash. “If there is a light at the end of the tunnel it is the Presto card, which will be solidly in place by the end of next year,” he said. “You can raise fares by two cents if you want to take it from the Presto card. That will allow for more variability.” Mihevc said he hasn’t given up hope on persuading Toronto Council to increase its subsidy to the TTC, and somewhat fainter hope in convincing the provincial government to fund the TTC operations.

Cases reported of people eating unsafe mushrooms and other plants DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Picking a batch of mushrooms from one of Toronto’s parks could add an exotic accent to a steak dinner. Depending on the mushroom you pick, that dinner could also send you on a hallucinogenic spiral, throw you into a seizure, send your blood-pressure soaring or, worst-case scenario, put you on a short list for a liver transplant. And other supposedly edibles found in the city’s ravines and forested areas
aren’t much safer, according to Dr. Margaret Thompson, medical director at the Ontario Poison Centre. “We’ve had calls from patients who thought they were picking wild parsnips and ended up having seizures, patients who thought they were picking wild leeks who ended up with gastrointestinal problems,” said Thompson last Friday. She said the poison centre hears from people who’ve had a bad experience with foraged mushrooms, and many more who have eaten
something else that disagreed with them. It is all a matter of correctly identifying what you’re eating. The only trouble is, with Toronto’s diverse ecology, making that identification can require a microscope and a professional. Thompson is helping Toronto get the message across that city parks are no place for foragers. Taking plants and other objects out of a park is prohibited in city bylaws, and in addition to the risk to human health, doing so can disrupt often delicate ecosystems.
i
Anyone with health concerns after eating foraged mushrooms should call the Ontario Poison Centre at 416-813-5900.

North York mom Lindsey Yeskoo hailed a ‘Hero in the Home’ Fannie Sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com
Emily Yeskoo was an athletic, artistic 8-year-old who was full of life when her mom, Lindsey, started noticing odd changes. The little girl began having absence seizures, where she would blankly stare for 30 seconds at a time. She wasn’t able to add two plus three, but could do long division. She couldn’t spell the word ‘better’ but writing out ‘chrysanthemum’ wasn’t a problem. Holding a pencil became troublesome and her writing now looked like lightning. “Emily didn’t know how to keep conversations going, how to keep friends,” her mom said. For the next two years, while the family moved from Japan, Washington and Shanghai due to Lindsey’s husband’s work as a diplomat, Lindsey took Emily to different professionals, who all agreed something was wrong, but didn’t know what. of her Shanghai school after teachers told her they didn’t know what to do with her daughter. “No one thought it was a medical problem,” she recalled. “They thought it was a learning disability.” At the height of SARS in March 2003, Lindsey and Emily boarded a plane to Washington to see if American physicians could pinpoint what was going on with the pre-teen. The diagnosis from a
pediatrician neurologist came in a day and a half: metachromatic leukodystrophy, or MLD. The fatal, degenerative, inherited illness affects the brain cells and the layer that protects the nerve cells, blocking messages from the brain to the rest of the body. “The pediatrician had treated a number of families with the disease and was pretty sure this was it,” said Lindsey, who had never heard of MLD
prior to Emily’s diagnosis. “We were told at the very most Emily had three years to live. If I had to describe MLD, it’s ALS, MS and Alzheimer’s all in one disease.” Twelve years later, Emily is now 22 and requires constant care. Lindsey is her daughter’s primary caregiver, sleeping in her room, bathing and dressing her, and making sure she receives nutrients through her feeding tube, as she is no longer able to swallow. She can’t speak and requires the use of a wheelchair and is often bed-bound. Emily, Lindsey, and her two healthy children, Christopher and Madeleine, moved back to Lindsey’s hometown of Toronto in 2005, settling in Bayview Village. Emily had been under the care of doctors at The Hospital for Sick Children, whom Lindsey credits with saving her daughter’s life when they inserted a feeding tube that delivers nutrients straight into her heart after her traditional feeding tube failed. A typical day starts with
Emily screaming in the early morning hours, with her fully awake up by 5 a.m. A nurse contracted from Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) tends to Emily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., while Lindsey gets some time to herself to do some shopping or house work. From 3 p.m. to 7 a.m., Emily is Lindsey’s full responsibility.
release. “It’s about saying thank you for their compassion and dedication to caring for others. It’s also about all of us being touched by their stories and the difference they make in the lives of others, and drawing on that inspiration as we work together to provide outstanding care at home and in the community.” Central CCAC’s group of honourees include family members, friends, community volunteers, personal support workers, care co-ordinators, nurses and therapists. Central CCAC care coordinator Sandy Hustler, who nominated Lindsey for the award, called the mother of three an “inspiration”. “I am not sure how Lindsey accomplishes all that she does, but I know she counts every day with her daughter as a blessing,” Hustler said in a release. “She is one of the kindest and most genuine women I have ever met. It’s a tough road she has to travel and she is an inspiration to all of us.”
“
She is one of the kindest and most genuine women I have ever met...she is an inspiration to all of us. – Sandy Hustler
Lindsey was one of more than 150 caregivers who received CCAC’s Heroes in the Home Caregiver Recognition Award last month during a ceremony in Markham. “Heroes in the Home acknowledges caregivers for the important work they do,” Lynn Harrett, interim CEO of Central CCAC, said in a

Public school board chair steps down to focus on federal run in Scarborough Scarborough-Rouge River Trustee Shaun Chen announced his resignation as chair of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) on Tuesday after the writ was dropped Sunday by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, which triggered a federal election campaign. Chen will be running as a Liberal candidate in the new federal riding of Scarborough North. “It’s really been a pleasure to work with this new board of trustees,” said Chen, calling this past year a time of transformation at the board. “We approved a new
whistleElection blower policy, reduced trustee discretionary expenses by over 55 per cent and became the first Ontario school board to establish an integrity commissioner.” With Chen stepping down, TDSB vice-chair and Beaches-East York Trustee Sheila Cary-Meagher will serve as acting chair until trustees meet in the near future to select a new chair. Chen noted he will also be taking a leave of absence as the Scarborough-Rouge River (Ward 21) school trustee and will not accepting any salary from the TDSB as he focuses on

campaiging for the federal election on Oct. 19. Kicking into campaign mode, Chen said one of the concerns he’s already heard from constituents in the diverse riding of Scarborough North is a lack of opportunity and support for young people to get good jobs. “There needs to be change not only in Toronto but across the country,” Chen said. “We need a national education plan that enables our young people to be successful.”

Metroland always delivers what they promise! Try using their flyers once like we did and you’ll notice a big difference in business
HOW METROLAND CHANGED THEIR MINDS
Since 1993, Teletime Superstore has been making a name for itself as the No. 1 place to shop for brand name consumer electronics and home appliances. “We weren’t using any flyer distributer before 2013 and we’ve noticed a huge difference in sales at all four locations thanks to Metroland,” says manager Jasdeep Atthi. “Our sales rep Wanda answers any questions or concerns we have and she walk us through the easiest ways to get things done.” When Teletime opened their fourth location in Markham, it was Wanda who suggested distributing in Scarborough and they weren’t surprised when more and more customers were coming in and mentioning the flyers.
