Order of Ontario awarded to Dr. Ming-Tat Cheung Cardiologist has hand in building community DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Long-time North York cardiologist Dr. Ming-Tat Cheung has been recognized by the province for his work outside his profession. Cheung, who was at the forefront of the 2003 fight against SARS, instrumental in bringing giant pandas to the Toronto Zoo and building the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, was awarded the Order of Ontario. his residency, and following graduation remained here, where he has been a clinical cardiologist for more than 30 years. The married father of four and grandfather of six became chief of cardiology and internal medicine at Humber River Hospital and a lecturer at the

University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine. He also led the community in building the Chinese Cultural Centre in Scarborough, the biggest of its kind in North America, which he says has been his most enjoyable work. While he has been presi-

North York history finds a new home at library CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com The donation of thousands of historical photographs and documents from the North York Historical Society to the North York Central Library’s Canadiana department was made official Friday. “Having these resources available in the library will be a wonderful aid to anyone researching the history and development of North

York,” said Linda Mackenzie, Toronto Public Library director of research and reference libraries. The collection now housed on the sixth floor of the library at 5120 Yonge St. includes 1,600 historical photographs of North York along with aerial photos from the 1940s and 1950s, and documents dating back to the 1830s. Bill Aird, president of the North York Historical Society, thanked all of the society vol-

unteers and library staff for sorting through the archived collection, which can now be widely accessible to the public. “This is a win for the collection, the society and the library,” said Aird, noting it was “without a doubt the best decision we made about the collection.” Ro b L e v e r t y, e x e c u tive director of the Ontario Historical Society, also commended the work of the North

York Historical Society of preserving local history since the organization was established in 1960. “What you’ve done since 1960 is absolutely phenomenal,” he said. While the North York Historical Society found a good home for its collection, the society itself is looking for a new home to gather and sort through more heritage material currently in boxes within a storage room.

The society has been without office space since it moved out of the restored Miller Tavern, formerly called The Jolly Miller, near Yonge Street and York Mills Road once occupancy charges began in 2011. The volunteer-run organization had a business office rent-free for five years when it first moved into the city-owned space in 2004.

Focus on legacy of Pan Am Games

H

ow can Toronto optimize the legacy of the upcoming Pan Am Games? What opportunities are there to create lasting change in our communities as a result of hosting the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games this summer? In this space last week, we wrote of how the Pan Am Path, an 84-kilometre trail being built to connect communities across the Toronto region, could create a living legacy for the city. It’s not the only example. Consider the facility construction and renovation that have taken place in Toronto because of the Games: The Aquatics Centre at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus. The track and field facility at York University in North York. The renovated Etobicoke Olympium. The Pan Am / Parapan Am Fields at the University of Toronto’s St. George campus. Several sites in CIBC Pan Am Park located along the shores of Lake Ontario, including Exhibition Place, Ontario Place and the West Channel. We can make use of those our view facilities in terms of promoting physical activity and Take advantage enabling community particiin local events. There of all the Games pation are significant opportunities to impact the lives of many have to offer Torontonians. Consider that there’s an entire neighbourhood – the Canary District – in the West Don Lands being constructed that will serve as temporary home for athletes this summer. Following the Games, that neighbourhood must integrate into the surrounding community and the city as a whole. How that transpires can serve as an example for other neighbourhoods when they experience a major development. And it’s not just bricks and mortar examples. There are opportunities for local businesses. There’s the opportunity to learn more about another culture being represented at the Games. There’s the volunteer experience. This isn’t about whether having the Games in Toronto is a good idea or not. We’re past that point. This is about making use of what the city will have after the Games and building the best possible legacy. There is potential to enable positive change on a grand scale. Learn more about the Games. Learn more about the facilities and parks being built. Understand how you as a resident of Toronto can take full advantage of Games facilities to create a better lifestyle once the Games are done. Anything less would simply be a wasted opportunity.

Hats off to your Family Day celebration A friend of mine, Who Shall Remain Nameless, is going to a special gala on Monday called Hats Off To Family Day and she’s beside herself with worry. Nameless is her maiden name, by the way. She made me swear under oath not to reveal her married name. For what it’s worth, I also had to sign an affidavit and have it notarized. It embarrasses me to say, I actually had to Google ‘affidavit’ before I agreed to do anything. But please don’t tell her that. Anyhow, the invitation said it was a come as who you are party (not to be confused with a come as you are party) and anyone not attired in such a manner would be refused entry. No wonder she was on edge. She says she finds it tough enough to pin down who she is at the best of times, but on Family Day it’s even more difficult because her relatives have seen her wearing so many different hats over the years.

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY First off, the majority of the crowd knows her as mom so showing up in a mom hat would be a good choice. Ditto for a mommy hat. Throwing on her proud grandmother hat would be a nice idea. She has that hat on a lot these days. She’s also known as Nana by many in the family, so being decked out in her nana hat would work just as well. So would sporting a daughter hat. She’s been a daughter the longest of any of her many identities over the course of her life. She’s a sister as well, which she’s been for only two years less than she’s been a daughter, so donning her sister hat would make a lot of sense. She’s been a niece, for considerable time, so a niece hat would be fitting, even if said hat doesn’t quite fit like it used to once upon

a time. She’s known as aunt and auntie so an aunt hat or an auntie hat are both worthy possibilities. Additionally, she’s a sister-in-law, so a sister-in-law hat would be well received. And she regularly reminds everyone that she’s also an aunt-in-law and auntie-in-law, so nobody would be too surprised if she showed up in her familiar aunt-in-law hat or auntie-in-law hats. Her prospective hat list is long. “You’ve got to help me, Jamie. Please. Who should I go as?” “Are you going to make me swear under oath one more time, sign a new affidavit and have it notarized, before I tell you?” I grumbled. “Of course. And I’d expect you Google ‘affidavit’ again, too,” she giggled. “Hey, how do you know I did that?” “What can I say? I read your column. Just don’t let that get around, especially

on Family Day. I have a reputation to uphold. Several actually. But back to the matter at hand, which hat should I wear?” “Why not put on all of them? On top of one another. In the order that they’ve been a part of your life. When you all doff your respective hats in honour of Family Day, you’re sure to be the hit of the party.” “That’s not half bad, even for you. So, do you promise that’ll happen?” “I’m not swearing under oath again, signing yet another affidavit and getting it notarized, if that’s what you’re looking for,” I sighed. “I hear you. I’ve put you through enough already. So forget the guarantee. How about this: Any chance you could you just Google ‘affidavit’ one more time? You know, for old times’ sake?” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. the north york mirror examines a local issue

our exclusive look

1 What is Theatre 20?

Theatre 20 is a professional theatre company that was founded in 2010 by a group of Canada’s top musical theatre artists – many of whom are Broadway and international theatre stars – with a mission to advance the development of musical theatre in Canada. The company aims to nurture the talent of writers and composers, and foster the development of young artists through mentorship and education programmes. Theatre 20 is artist-led and strives to present story-driven musicals, either by developing new Canadian works or by re-imagining existing classics.

questions about theatre 20

The Mirror spoke with North York’s Brian Goldenberg, a newcomer to the artist-led music theatre company, who steps into a new role as executive director. by DOMINIK KUREK

2 What is your role as executive director? My role as Theatre 20’s executive director is to oversee the overall management of the organization, its strategic direction, and its artistic vision. Working with the Theatre 20 board of directors and the founding artists, I have a responsibility to give direction and leadership toward the achievement of the organization’s philosophy, mission and strategy. Some of my specific responsibilities include fundraising, finances, accounting, marketing, operations, strategic planning, outreach and education, and production management. With the new leadership team at Theatre 20, we now have a dual leadership model, which is a very common and successful structure for arts organizations across North America. In collaboration with David Keeley (artistic director) and Nora McLellan (associate artistic director), my role is to facilitate and implement our strategic plan, goals and objectives. In addition, I have a responsibility to represent Theatre 20 publicly, acting as a company spokesperson.

4 Being in a management position and not an artistic position at Theatre 20, how do you hope to shape the company? In my role at Theatre 20, I believe that I have a fantastic opportunity to shape the future of the company. The beauty of the dual leadership model is that the artistic leaders work collaboratively with the artistic managers, so all of the major strategic decisions are being made as a collaboration between both parties. The artistic and management side of the company are co-dependent, and ultimately the collaboration involves a strong understanding of both sides of the company. In my career, I have held many artistic roles, and I believe that my knowledge and understanding of the artistic side of a company makes me a stronger leader. In my previous role as Angelwalk Theatre’s artistic producer, I was fulfilling the role of both the executive director and the artistic director, so it’s very exciting for me to be collaborating with David and Nora. I believe that Theatre 20 is at a turning point in its development as we approach its fifth anniversary in March. With an amazing group of founding artists, a supportive board of directors, a strong mandate and mission, I am hoping to leverage our past successes and current strengths in order to fulfill Theatre 20’s potential.

3 Being the first executive director of Theatre 20, how much pressure is there on you to deliver results? I believe that the organization has high expectations for what I will be able to bring to Theatre 20. To date, Theatre 20 has been very successful, and in bringing on a new leadership team, the board of directors is hoping for us to take the torch from the previous leadership and continue the good work that Theatre 20 is known for. With any leadership change, the direction is likely to shift slightly, and I know that David, Nora and I definitely have aspirations for where we believe that Theatre 20 can go in the future. I think that the sentiment at Theatre 20 these days is definitely supportive and encouraging, and I am excited about what we are going to be able to achieve.

5 What roadblocks do you foresee in achieving your goals for Theatre 20? The constant roadblock in the arts is funding. We are blessed in Canada with a very supportive arts community and as we evaluate our goals and opportunities, I am very optimistic about the support that we will receive from our patrons, donors and industry colleagues. The big question ultimately will come down to whether or not there is the funding available to support all of our aspirations. At this point, I believe that there is, but only time will tell.

6

What exciting things can people expect from Theatre 20 this season?

We are hoping to announce our 2015/2016 season in a few months, so I’m not going to give away everything just yet. However, people can definitely expect to see us continuing and expanding our role in advancing the development of musical theatre in Canada. Education and mentorship programs for emerging artists will definitely be on the plate, and we have exciting plans for how we will contribute to developing and producing musical theatre.

Predictably, Toronto council didn’t want to trouble itself this week with more questions about the Scarborough subway plan. Councillor Josh Matlow dared them to do otherwise, submitting five fairly uncomfortable administrative inquiries poking holes in council’s plans to hike taxes and build an expensive three-stop subway along a route that had been slated for a fully funded seven-stop light rail line. Questions asked, questions answered, council decided, voting to approve a motion from Deputy Mayor Glenn De Baeremaeker to receive the inquiries and not send them along to Mayor John Tory’s Executive Committee. The questions were answered, by city manager Joe Pennachetti as the rules require. Given those answers, one might have thought councillors would be interested in a little more talk. Matlow wondered about the sunk costs that the city will be responsible loss on Scarborough RT wpower Scores of Scarborough RT riders were forced to switch to emergency shuttle buses over the weekend following an extended outage on the aged transit line. The TTC blamed “electrical power loss” for the hours-long shutdown of the line from Kennedy to McCowan RT stations which lasted much of Saturday. This year should have marked the opening of the Scarborough LRT, which would have replaced the RT. But with plans switched to building a subway extension it won’t be until at least 2023 when Scarborough residents have a new transit option. Until then the TTC hopes to extend the shelf-life of the RT and should it eventually break down beyond all repair, replace its operation with buses. WORKERS seek backing from mayor wTTC

Mayor John Tory got a rough ride from transit workers this week demanding he take a position on the possible contracting out of

david nickle the city for paying on the cancellation of the light rail line. Pennachetti said he’d report later, although leaked documents indicate it sits at $75 million. In 2013, they were estimated at $10 million more. What will the new subway cost to run? Pennachetti said $30 million to $40 million a year for capital maintenance. What of SmartTrack and its impact on ridership of the subway? All of that will be factored in to further studies emerging as the subway environmental assessment unfolds, and the SmartTrack preliminary work proceeds. And what is that ridership? In 2006, the city estimated 9,500 people per hour. In 2013, ridership was estimated at 14,000. In the end, only six councillors thought those questions required more study. De Baeremaeker, with the

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT TTC union jobs. The mayor was greeted with chants of “keep transit public” from workers at the TTC’s Hillcrest maintenance facility when he toured the site Monday. At issue is an agreement signed with the province giving the TTC the right to operate the planned lines, including the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, but leaves design and maintenance responsibilities to the provincial government. OF SNOW BLOCKS BIKE SHARE STATION wPILE

For days, a mound of snow has blocked access to a Bike Share Toronto station. Last Thursday, TTC board member Alan Heisey first tweeted a photo of the snow-covered station at the northeast corner of King Street and University Avenue, which looked like it was covering at least half of the available bicycle docks where members of the bike

blessing of Tory, carried the day and the matter is shelved. After the vote, De Baeremaeker pointed out that many of the questions Matlow posed had been answered in 2013 when council made the leap from light rail to subway. But things change. Among other things, De Baeremaeker is proposing another $150 million for a fourth station on the line. Matlow is not the only one uncomfortable with this. Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong voted against the subway in 2013 and still thinks there are problems. But that’s not the same thing as wanting to reopen the matter. The public wants to get on with things. There is one more question, though: are Torontonians tired enough of debate to sign a blank cheque for a transit plan that’s looking more and more like a bad fit? Guess we’ll find out.

share pick up or drop off their rented rides. Heisey then tweeted another picture Monday showing the snow had still not been removed. City councillor Pam McConnell confirmed through Twitter the snow was left by a private contractor. STATION TO GET INTERNET ACCESS wSPADINA

Spadina Station will soon have access to subway Wi-Fi, the TTC announced last week. Museum and St. Patrick were the latest stops connected to the list of stations already offering the TCONNECT wireless network that riders can access for free from their smartphones. Spadina is set to go online next month. Last year, service provider BAI Canada pledged to have the downtown subway loop completed in time for the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games this summer

23rd January, 2015 To Whom it May Concern, It is with pleasure and gratitude that we share comments on our experience with Bill Thom in the listing and sale of our home. The experience at each phase of the sales effort was superior: useful insights on pre-listing work of preparing our house; pricing strategy and effective showings. As a result we received multiple offers and our house was sold in two (2) days. The guidance he provided and proactive facilitation during the sale negotiations was precise and clear. All of these tasks, whether business-related or interpersonal, were accomplished with a noticeable degree of competence and integrity. Thus, we highly recommend Bill Thom for your real estate needs.

Sincerely,

George and Eileen Tso * Based on Toronto MLS Listings Sold (C14 & C15 combined)

TDSB trustees vote to comply with final three provincial directives Toronto District School Board ( TDSB) trustees voted to comply with the remaining three provincial directives Tuesday, which include providing the Ontario Education Ministry with a list of underutilized schools that could be considered for sale. It’s part of the three-year capital plan, one of the 13 directives issued by Ontario Education Minister Liz Sandals, in the report by Margaret Wilson who conducted a review of the board’s performance. The plan includes the board looking at 48 operating schools over the next three years as well as 20 additional school properties, which include sites that are already closed and recommended for sale in last June’s capital budget.

We’re not making any surplus declaration tonight.” Chen agreed, saying the decision to close or sell a school still has to come back to the board and there’s no guarantee that schools on the list will come back with a recommendation to sell. He noted the process is also a lengthy one with the earliest a school can be closed would be in the 2016-2017 school year. “We will continue to make sure we’ll reach out to our partners,” added Chen, which includes further discussions with both Toronto Mayor John Tory and Education Minister Sandals.

Chuvalo, Ruddock involved in event >>>from page 1 to hone their skills. These kids need that strong mentorship that we provide.” The Fight for Youth dinner and boxing event is happening Thursday, March 5 at Arcadian Court, 401 Bay St., Simpsons Tower, 8th Floor. Happening on Bay Street, where many of the dropin centre’s supporters are located, the event will feature seven bouts of elite amateur boxers from Ontario and Nova Scotia. The drop-in centre is open six days a week and sees 45 to 60 youths each night. It provides meals, homework help, computer rooms, teaching guides and a number of programs. There are also boxing classes, but Jones said this is just another way to help build the youths’ confidence. “These aren’t just community centres, these are empowerment centres,” Jones said. “We expect these kids to leave at night with a little more insight, a little more confidence, a little more self-

worth.” Born in Windsor and raised on the streets of Detroit, Jones dealt with a learning disability, fell behind in class, became disillusioned and dropped out of school in Grade 5. He then turned to a life of crime with juvenile detention and prison to follow soon after. However, he returned to school and became a boxer,

an award-winning journalist and radio personality, author and motivational speaker. He also wanted to make sure no child goes through the kind of life he did. “My mission has always been with kids because I come out of that background,” he said. As a motivational speaker, he did a prison tour and found

many of the inmates were hardened prisoners. He said the path towards that type of life starts early, and Believe to Achieve works to direct children on a different path. “I thought we have to stop kids from getting this far, so how do we do that? We have to get them when they’re young. That’s what we do at Believe to Achieve,” he said. He said many of the children who attend the drop-in centre, located at 160 Chalkfarm Dr., come from the Jane and Finch area and are ashamed of the negative perceptions about the community. But, he said, there are a lot of good kids in the neighbourhood. “At Believe to Achieve, it doesn’t matter where you come from, it’s where you’re going,” Jones said. Fight for Youth will include such personalities as boxing greats George Chuvalo, Horace “The Mighty” Hunter and Razor Donovan Ruddock.

Grant will help build Success without Limits >>>from page 1 Toronto Foundation, one of Canada’s largest community foundations, has now awarded 106 recipients with the Vital People grants since 2004 – an investment of nearly $510,000. For Penrose, the grant will allow him to take a couple of courses including the Rotman School of Management finance and accounting for non-financial managers course, and Ryerson University’s social media for executives course. But the more exciting opportunity afforded to him is a learning trip to Chicago to see the progress of The Remix Project, which started in Toronto and expanded to the U.S. to help accelerate the careers of young artists. Penrose hoped to empower himself to continue helping high school youth and building up Success Beyond Limits. “A big part of it is access whether it’s access to mentors,
