It’s been nearly a year since the last Ford Fest in Thomson Memorial Park, and Ford Nation’s been silent on when the party might return to Scarborough. Former mayoral candidate Doug Ford, however, says Ford Fest isn’t dead - and it may soon transplant itself to a new territory, North York. On Tuesday, he said the family were checking possible dates and locations and would make an announcement “probably in the next week.” Ford added he’s talked with younger brother Rob, former >>>FORD, page 20

Mary ‘Pat’ Stocks obit entertains people around the world DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The obituary for North York’s Mary “Pat” Stocks is personal, funny and full of inside jokes. The one thing that her son, Sandy Stocks, who wrote it, did not anticipate is that it would delight anyone other than her family and close friends. But, the 600-plus-word obit has struck a cord with readers

beyond family and friends, so much so that Sandy is missing time off work to do media interviews and respond to hundreds of emails being sent to him from across the world. “I would say it’s a huge reaction. I guess it hit home with some people,” Sandy, also of North York, said. “I have so many emails to write back to people that I’ve never heard from or heard of. I’m trying to

reply to them all to say thank you for the kind words about the obituary.” He said he and his family have received messages from such places as Scotland, Dubai and New Zealand. Pat died July 1 at age 94 in her home. She lived on Underhill Drive, near Lawrence Avenue. The obituary starts off with an attempt to give away the mother, grandmother and great-

Order of Canada bestowed on two Sunnybrook researchers FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Two Sunnybrook Research Institute researchers have been appointed to the Order of Canada. Dr. Sandra Black has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada (O.C.), which recognizes national service or achievement, and Dr. Martin Yaffe has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada (C.M.), which notes outstanding contributions at the local or regional level or in a special field of activity. For Black, there was a poignancy to the timing of when she received word of her appointment, as it came the day she buried the ashes of her mother – an Order of Canada appointee 30 years ago – in Sault Ste. Marie. “I felt the torch was being passed somehow,” she said, adding she was thrilled and humbled to receive the honour in early summer. Director of the Hurvitz Brain Sciences Research Program at Sunnybrook Research Institute, Black is an internationally renowned cognitive and stroke neurologist and a leading clinical trialist in dementia. She is the executive director of the Toronto Dementia Research Alliance, a multi-institutional collaborative network of memory programs at the University

Dr. Sandra Black, above, the director of the Hurvitz Brain Sciences Research Program at Sunnybrook Research Institute, was recently appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. of Toronto, and is the Sunnybrook site director of the Heart and Stroke Foundation Canadian Partnership for Stroke Recovery. She has authored and co-authored more than 430 papers in a 25-year research career that has bridged dementia and stroke using neuroimaging to study brain behaviour relationships, with a recent focus on interactions of small vessel disease and

Alzheimer’s disease. Black acknowledges focusing her practice on both dementia and stroke is an unusual combination, but believes there is a connection between the two. She has been involved in some 50 to 60 clinical trials over her career, and most recently is looking at biomarkers to see who is at risk of betaamyloids – a protein strongly implicated in Alzheimer’s dis-

ease – developing in the brain by focusing on characteristics of the eye. Another trial is looking at healthy adults aged 65 to 85 with a family history of dementia to see if they have an uptake of beta-amyloid, which would increase their cognitive decline within five to 10 years. Treatment would include removing the protein from the brain. “We are still in the early

stages of understanding dementia,” she said. Yaffe said he was “delighted” when he received the news July 1. “It’s such an honour to be recognized for your work, your contributions,” he said. A senior scientist in the Odette Cancer Research Program at Sunnybrook Research Institute with a focus on breast cancer, Yaffe helped pioneer digital mammography technology, which is now used as the diagnostic standard in North America over the old film mammography, for earlier and more accurate detection of breast cancer. He is also a leading researcher in 3D breast imaging for breast cancer screening, which aims to detect the disease earlier and with greater accuracy and reduce false positive results, specifically for people with dense breasts. Yaffe credits his uncle, the late Dr. Leo Yaffe, who was also appointed to the Order of Canada, with influencing his love of science. “Growing up with an uncle who was an outstanding scientist motivated me to go into the sciences,” he said, adding his PhD advisor, the late Dr. Harold E. Johns and fellow Order of Canada appointee, was also instrumental in his career path. After helping to develop digital mammography in the

what is it? Established in 1967 by Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation in all sectors of Canadian society. Since its creation, more than 6,000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order. 1980s and going through clinical testing in Canada and the United States, the study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2005, and has been used world-wide ever since, he said. “Breast cancer is the second highest cancer killer in women in Canada,” he said when asked why he chose this particular field to study. “If women die in their late 40s or early 50s, they may have a kid who no longer has a mother. For me, that’s important motivation.” Yaffe, who is a professor in the departments of medical biophysics and medical imaging at the University of Toronto, stresses the importance of preventative procedures like mammographies, which he believes plays an imperative life saving role.

Centennial College to get up to $18.4 million for Downsview Aerospace Campus Clark Kim ckim@insidetoronto.com Centennial College will receive up to $18.4 million in federal funding for its new Aerospace Campus at Downsview Park. Local dignitaries including York Centre MP Mark Adler, Mayor John Tory, and federal Finance Minister Joe Oliver attended the funding

announcement yesterday at the former De Havilland aircraft assembly plant where it will be renovated into an aerospace hub. “For decades, this place has been a hub for aerospace development and manufacturing,” said Adler, noting De Havilland’s past contributions in building aircrafts particularly during the Second World

War. “I’m proud to say, it will be again.” He added that according to a KPMG study, the investment made into the future aerospace campus will create more than 14,000 high-skilled, high-wage jobs and develop the next generation of aerospace workers. Tory thanked the federal government for its commit-

ment to the project as well as Centennial College for its vision of building the new campus in Downsview Park. “This is good news for Toronto,” said Tory, adding that it will especially be beneficial for the local neighbourhood, which should attract education and business opportunities as well as becoming more accessible to

students and workers with the new Downsview Park Station. “It’s going to connect people to jobs.” Brad Chapman, CFO and vice president of business development at Centennial College, assured that while the college is new to York Centre, they are committed to working with the community to enhance the local neighbour-

ast week, Mayor John Tory took to Twitter to ask Torontonians where the ‘Toronto’ sign, now in front of Nathan Phillips Square, should travel

next. Ideas for where the huge multi-coloured sign will be accepted until the end of the Parapan Am Games (Aug. 15) and should be Tweeted to @JohnTory with the hashtag #TORONTOsign The fun social media campaign is looking to crowdsource ideas for where the sign should be placed next – it’s scheduled to stay in front of Toronto City Hall until the end of the year. In a short video introducing the campaign, Tory cites places such as High Park, YongeDundas Square, and even jokes about putting the sign outside the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, home of the NHL’s Senators. Suggestions and photographs our view with the sign plunked somewhere in Toronto have started coming in: Build unity the new George Brown Campus, the Scarborough Bluffs, a resiby sharing dential neighbourhood, and even our sign perched atop the CN Tower. Some ideas are funny, others logical, and some just ridiculous. However, what this sign does offer Torontonians is a way to weigh in on how the city can connect. It’s one city, so the #TORONTOsign should visit every corner of Toronto. It would be a great way to build unity across the city. Imagine coming upon the sign in Mel Lastman Square, at Artscape Wychwood Barns, or the Guild Inn Park. Maybe as an entry point along the major highways coming into the city. How about walking along Queen Street in Parkdale and coming upon the sign at the amphitheatre at Dufferin Street? Maybe Councillor Norm Kelly is right, and the sign could sit above the Scarborough Bluffs looking out across Lake Ontario. How about Sunnyside Beach, the Financial District, Todmorden Mills or the Junction train platform? Toronto is considered a city within a park so why not do a travelling park tour? One thing is certain: the sign, installed for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, shouldn’t outstay its welcome. It should be on a tour of the city until it lets Torontonians feel they have connected with other Torontonians. This tour could pique interest in other areas of the city many people have not seen. It’s tough to get the west to travel east, or the north to head south. But, a #TORONTOsign might jump-start that migration.

column

Hoping Pan Am Games can stick the landing The moment the closing ceremonies for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games conclude Sunday night, discussion will begin in earnest about what Torontonians will take home with them from the Pan An movement. I’m hoping that all of the Games’ inherent messages are taken to heart, starting with a rediscovery of the joy of movement itself. A growing fascination with being glued to screens day and night is leading to a sedentary lifestyle for far too many. But, judging by the expressions on the faces of the young kids looking on in the crowds, it seems that seeing Canadian athletes running, swimming, diving, splashing, pedaling, riding, skating, grappling, boarding, jumping around – and grinning from ear to ear while doing it all – is being perceived as a very appealing alternative. Imagine that. Physical activity is cool again. Take that, technology. Another potential boon

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY from the Games is that single-tasking, which existed once upon a time but was never actually called that, could also be on the verge of making a big comeback. The original concept of multi-tasking was to be able to work on several projects simultaneously while giving equal effort to all. But that was before we were at the beck and call – and text – of intruding portable devices. Since then, multi-tasking has been downgraded from positive enhancement to negative distraction and quality has had to take a back seat to quantity. Athletes know better than to be preoccupied with anything other than what they have to do while on the job. It’s called being focused. If their minds wander for a fraction of a second it can mean the difference between success and failure.

The impressive number of medals that Canada has earned here has provided these Games with the perfect platform to repeatedly drive that point home. But the potential offshoot from these Games I’m rooting for most is an appreciation for the value of teamwork. Sadly, few seem to be able to relate to that concept in this day and age. But athletes can. They are taught from day one about its importance. Teamwork is part and parcel of the mission statement of every sport. I’m not just talking team sports either, such as baseball, softball, soccer and rugby that we have been witnessing since retired NBA superstar and future Hall of Famer Steve Nash lit the Games cauldron. I’m also referring to the individual sports we’ve been watching, such as golf, boxing and wrestling. Listen to the athletes in any of the Pan Am sports and they’ll all speak enthu-

siastically about the commitment they make and the pride they feel representing their local teams, their Pan Am team and the biggest team of all, their country. It’s also readily apparent that simply putting on the uniforms of each team they represent is enough to fill them with inspiration. The Pan Am Games have flown by so quickly. It would be a shame if this message has not sunk in yet. But there’s plenty of time. There are still a few days left and the Parapan Am Games, which begin on Aug. 7, are just around the corner. All the same attributes just discussed will be on display there, too. The names and events may change, but the stories will be just as uplifting. I have a feeling the best is yet to come. U. professor named to Order of Canada wYork York University music professor and internationally renowned violinist Jacques Israelievitch has been named a member of the Order of Canada. I’m completely fulfilled by all this. If my career is like a wonderful cake, receiving the Order of Canada is the cherry on top.” Israelievitch was one of 100 appointments announced on July 1 by Gov. Gen. David Johnston. A ceremony for the appointees to be officially invested into the Order of Canada will be held at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. hold with 311? Listen to Toronto musicians wOn

Next week, the tunnel connecting the mainland to Billy Bishop Airport on the Toronto Islands will be open to the airtravelling public, becoming the second piece of air-travel infrastructure to come online in Toronto this year. The first opened its doors less than a month ago: the Union-Pearson Express train service running from Union Station through Weston to Pearson International Airport. It is telling that these two pieces – one privately funded and the other using federal and provincial dollars – are providing transportation services to people with passports and plane tickets and cash. Meanwhile, transit improvements for the rest of us, simply trying to get around town, plod along at their own pace, in the best case fully funded and at worst pie-in-the-sky political dreams. It is in this context I look at the TTCriders’ suggestion last weekend, that Metrolinx simply give up the Union Pearson Express as a masstransit route, with a bit more

david nickle the city sympathy than usual. The advocacy group based its argument on what seems a dubious study of their own, spending a morning rush-hour counting the number of riders going in and out of the Pearson station of the line, and counted just 14 on each train. Metrolinx offers up slightly better numbers and maintains that the new $27.50-a-ride train to the airport is a success. Yet, there is compelling reason to think about what the express might do for the morning commute. The TTC is busting at the seams, and city council has decided to prioritize costly transit improvements that won’t soon provide relief and will likely become even more costly. The Scarborough subway extension council approved will likely have to be realigned to make way for Mayor John Tory’s SmartTrack surface rail that follows at a

point the precise same route as the subway. And SmartTrack could run into its own problems, particularly in the west end through Etobicoke, on land that the city no longer owns. Putting commuters on trains on the UP line would immediately reduce the need, if there ever was one, for that western SmartTrack line. It is not, of course, as easy as that. The 15-minute service currently available in each direction for SmartTrack would probably have to be increased. Politically, abandoning air travellers for transit users would involve a mea culpa for the Wynne government and Metrolinx that might be untenable. It is, however, easy to get resentful while packed into a subway car, thinking of the ease those few well-heeled travellers have now, making their way from their suite at the Royal York Hotel to the departure lounge at Pearson.

Fundraiser in memory of North York infant A second fundraiser in support of The Hospital for Sick Children’s cardiac critical care unit in honour of a young North York baby who received treatment at the downtown site Friday will be held tomorrow in Vaughan. 5 to 10 p.m. in memory of Alivia Nina Pileggi. The infant underwent open heart surgery at two weeks old for her condition of pulmonary atresia with intact septum, which obstructed the outflow of blood from the heart to the lungs due to a completely closed valve. Though the surgery was successful, blood clots later formed all over her body, including her kidney and

liver. Alivia died at 18 days old on July 26, 2011. The fundraiser will feature various vendors and prizes, with a goal of raising $25,000 in order to purchase an honourary plaque in Alivia’s name for the donor wall of the downtown hospital. Admission costs $2.

Rush’s Neil Peart replica drum auction supports Princess Margaret Fans have a chance to bid on a unique snare drum, the very same one used by North York-based Rush’s drummer Neil Peart, and one of only 250 such made. The Neil Peart Icon Snare Drum auction runs until July 27 at www.ebay.ca. The proceeds of the auction will support The Princess Margaret

Hospital in Toronto. The snare drum is a replica of the one used in Peart’s oneof-a-kind #R40 drumset. The snare is made from 1,500-year-old Romanian River Oak salvaged from the bottom of the Olt River. It is inlaid with intricate, lasercut exotic woods and complemented by gold-plated

hardware. Only 250 of these were produced by DW (Drum Workshop) and each one is signed and numbered. Also on auction is a 17-inch Sabian Neil Peart Paragon Crash Cymbal, autographed by Peart and the two North York members of Rush: Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson.

of Leslie Barns delayed again wOpening

rahul gupta

The Leslie Barns maintenance and storage facility for the TTC’s new streetcar fleet is delayed yet again. Leslie Street was supposed to have re-opened in July, delayed from June after a private contractor’s error required the concrete track bed from Commissioners Street to Queen Street to be torn up and rebuilt. The problem is now fixed but more time was needed for the project’s engineering contractor to review final designs for the work which TTC spokesperson Brad Ross termed as more complicated than usual because of technical requirements. Leslie is slated to re-open next month, but the facility won’t open until late September.

advocacy group went to the UP station at Toronto Pearson airport last Thursday to count the morning rush-hour passengers using the four-stop premium transit line. They claim to have spotted an average of 14 people using the service over a two-hour period – eight per cent of total capacity per train. Metrolinx reported recently ridership is at 3,250 passengers a day, in line with its first-year projections for UP, which began running in early June. It’s projecting 2.5 million annual UP customers over the long-term, enough to recover day-today costs.

CONFLICTING NUMBERs OF UP EXPRESS RIDERS Metrolinx may be touting early ridership numbers for the pricey Union Pearson Express as being promising, but TTCriders isn’t convinced. Members of the transit

of the sleek new rides, 204 of which are supposed to replace the existing fleet within five years. A revised production schedule by Bombardier promises 27 of the vehicles will be in the TTC’s possession by the end of the year. Two of the new streetcars are running on the 509 Harbourfront route, three on 510 Spadina and two on the 511 Bathurst service. EARLY SUNDAY SUBWAY STARTS CONSIDERED This Sunday will be the last scheduled early opening for the subway as the Pan Am Games come to a close. For the past two Sundays, trains have started operating at 6 a.m., three hours earlier than usual, to help transport Games spectators. While the TTC claims it needs the three hours to get the trains ready for regular 9 a.m. service, it is looking into options for speeding up the work to allow for consistent early openings.

>>>from page 1 children wanted a decadeold toaster, TVs “weighing 350 pounds” or a 14-yearold car and they all laughed about it. “I came home and told my wife about it and said I got to write the obit and sit down and do it. The first thing that I thought of was that little story. And from there it just flowed,” Sandy said. “My mother was the type that said ‘I don’t want a funeral. I don’t want anything, just take my ashes and throw them down at Yonge and Bloor where I first kissed my husband,’” Sandy said. Pat was predeceased by her husband, Paul Stocks. “I thought I have to do something that people, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, should remember her by. It was done for the family, not for anybody else.” While some jokes would only be known to the family, the obit created a reaction to many more people, with responses on social media, hitting the news and with tons of messages being sent to the Sandy. One person wrote to Sandy saying he thought their moms must have been separated at birth, because they were so alike. Other letters were funny.

The Stocks family gathers together.

“One letter, I think on Sunday, said, ‘Oh my goodness, thank you so much for this obituary. I was having the worst day of my life, it was absolutely terrible and I read your mother’s obituary and couldn’t stop laughing and I’ve had the best day since,’” Sandy said. “It’s kind of cool. Mom, you’re cheering people up and you’re not even here to do it.” Sa n d y s a i d h e l ov e s the positive reaction he’s received. He’s still working on giving away his mom’s belongings and anticipates much of it, such as clothes, will be donated. The obit lightheartedly looks back at Pat’s penchant for “overcooking everything until it chewed like rubber”,

her school of hard knocks method of parenting and her liking “four letter words as much as she loved her rock garden.” But it also talks about her wit, tenacity and undying love for her family. “She was a great lady. There was no neutral or reverse with her. It was always full speed ahead,” Sandy said. She was even driving at age 94, until a few months ago when she developed an arrhythmic heartbeat. “She was all there, her mind, her body, she was absolutely an amazing lady. We have tons of memories,” Sandy said.

Ford ponders venue change for traditional community festival >>>from page 1 Toronto mayor and current Etobicoke North councillor, about hosting Ford Fest in a new location. “Rob’s really itching to do it in North York.” Ford supporters were never shy before about promoting these annual parties for the public, which started, by their recollection, in Etobicoke back yard of the Ford family home in 1995. After Rob Ford became mayor, the Fords kept up the tradition until 2013, when, in an apparent nod to Ford’s strong Scarborough base, they staged a Ford Fest at Thomson

Park on Brimley Road. That event, offering free hamburgers, beer and T-shirts, drew thousands. The family’s decision to stage another last July 25, as Rob Ford was campaigning for re-election, drew complaints from many, but the Fords, insisting it was a family celebration and not a campaign event, got their city permit. They have also said the parties aren’t welcome any longer at the home of their mother, Diane Ford. The last Ford Fest was held in an Islington Avenue parking lot late last September, after Rob Ford had started cancer

treatment and Doug Ford had taken his place as candidate for mayor. This week, Doug Ford said the family knows a lot of its support comes from Scarborough and Etobicoke, where the parties are appreciated. But the family has supporters in North York, too, he added. “We may do a tripleheader.”

Pair of Ward 9 candidates to have election spending audits DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Two unsuccessful candidates in the 2014 Ward 9 city council election will have to undergo audits of their election spending, Toronto’s Compliance Audit Committee has decided. The committee met July 15 to consider complaints against Gus Cusimano and Anthony Fernando, both of whom ran and lost against incumbent councillor Maria Augimeri. To complicate matters, the complaint against Cusimano came from Fernando. Fernando complained that during the election, six billboards were purchased in the final six weeks of the campaign, four of them promoting Cusimano’s insurance business and “at least two other billboards encourage(ing) residents to ‘make their vote count’ by voting for Gus Cusimano.” Fernando argued that all six billboards should have been listed in Cusimano’s campaign expenses. Lawyers for Cusimano argued the billboards “were put up entirely for business purposes. They resulted from a “chance encounter with a salesperson for CBS

Outdoor to Mr. Cusimano” and were arranged by an employee of Deerborne Insurance. Cusimano also submitted a statement from Renato Sannuto, a Ward 9 resident and business owner, who said he paid for the political billboards, and he did not communicate with Cusimano. The committee was not persuaded by Cusimano’s arguments and ordered a compliance audit be done. At the same meeting, the committee ordered a compliance audit of Fernando’s campaign expenses. The complaint suggested there was a missing lease for an Aug. 9, 2014 event called The Taste of the Downsview, at Downsview Park, and questioned other expenses, including rent for wooden stakes for signs, printing services and what appears to be a discounted rent on the campaign office. In his response, Fernando called the complaint by Stephen Stroolivitch “confusing and baseless.” He maintained that The Taste of Downsview event was, while designed to promote Fernando’s candidacy, also a business opportunity to the vendors who took part,

and their payments were to help defray costs. “Each of these parties signed a contract acknowledging that their payment and participation was in recognition of the business opportunity the event afforded,” he wrote. “Moreover the contract noted that their payment was not a political contribution to my campaign or statement of political support.” Fernando maintained he wasn’t required to submit the full lease with Downsview Park to the city in his campaign expenses, and then dismissed or offered clarification for the other complaints. The compliance audits ordered against both candidates will mean an outside auditor will be hired to look through the campaign books and determine whether they have violated the Municipal Elections Act by overspending or failing to declare proper expenses. If the committee finds either candidate breached the act, they could be prevented from running in the next election.

On track: a glimpse of sprint sensation Andre De Grasse Fannie Sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Beverley De Grasse admitted she was a little nervous – yet excited – waiting for her son, who is considered to be the future of Canadian track, to run his heat in the men’s 100 metres at York University Tuesday at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games.

pan am games athlete Turns out she didn’t have anything to worry about, as Andre De Grasse, the recent NCAA champion in both the 100 metres and 200 metres and current Canadian record holder in the 200 metres, easily clinched top spot in his heat with a time of 10.06 to advance to the semifinals for 100 metres the following day. The crowd roared when the 20-year-old Markham sprint sensation’s name was announced before the race began, and many were on their

watching from the stands close to where her son was racing. “(His quick rise) has been a bit overwhelming for him, but I think he’s enjoying the

ride now.” Sporting a white T-shirt with two pictures of her son on it, with the words “nothing personal” underneath – a

saying Andre repeats to his competitors at the end of each race – Beverley said having the Games in Toronto was a big boost for her son. “I think it’s great,” she said. “The support of the fans, friends, I think it’s a good thing for him.” One of those friends is Mikhile Jeremiah, who claims responsibility for getting Andre involved in track. Jeremiah, who used to run track until an injury put him out of commission, said he begged his friend to run track at a high school meet years ago. “He ran 10.9 (in the 100 metres) without training,” he said of Andre, who he met through mutual friends in Grade 9. “It was impressive.” Dan Little and Cheri Busch drove from Dundas, ON to see the track star – and others – in action under the hot sun. “We are big track fans,” Little said, adding he most wanted to see Andre compete, while Busch was interested in the women’s 5,000 metres. “It’s

awesome the Pan Am Games are here. I’m just excited. This is a beautiful venue.” Busch, who travelled with Little to London, England to watch track during the 2012 Olympics, said she thinks the competition name should be the Ontario Pan Am Games and not Toronto, as venues are spread across the southern part of the province. “The Games are taking place in other places, like St. Catharines, Welland, Milton,” she said. “I would like to see this recognized.” Rob Jacobs said he mainly came out to see Andre compete, but was enjoying the other events, which included the women’s 5,000 metres, women’s 100 metres, and men’s pole vault. “It’s not too often you get to see something like the Pan Am Games in your backyard,” said the Hamilton resident. “It’s been thrilling. I am very proud of our athletes.”
