Havergal College student Angelina Pan participated in the International Summer School for Young Physicists at Perimeter Institute in Waterloo.

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com For the past 15 years, Sodexo Foundation and Second Harvest have fed thousands of innercity campers over the summer months. Though free or subsidized breakfast and lunch programs are offered by various schools over the academic year, nothing is in place to feed youngsters in July and August. The Feeding Our Future program was developed by food and facility management company Sodexo Canada in 2000 to help alleviate child hunger over the summer, with Second Harvest quickly jumping on board. Havergal College student Angelina Pan was surrounded by brilliant physicists this summer as a participant in the International Summer School for Young Physicists (ISSYP). From July 12 to 26, Pan along with more than 40 high school students from around the world, attended the intensive two-week program at Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, tackling modern physics topics ranging from quantum mechanics to black holes. “We feel like we’re a big family,” said Pan, who has worked with students coming from as far as Singapore, Brazil and Tunisia. The Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue area resident said her experience at the ISSYP has been “really great” as she received mentorship from researchers at Perimeter, the world’s largest theoretical physics >>>NORTH, page 6

TTC pledges better off-peak rides on busy bus, streetcar routes RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The TTC is pledging improved crowding conditions on 33 busy bus and streetcar routes during off-peak travel periods. The routes in question will see more frequent service, shorter wait times and offer riders a far greater opportunity to get a seat outside of the usual rush hour times, promised TTC chair Josh Colle, who was joined by Mayor John Tory and Etobicoke North Councillor Vincent Crisanti for the announcement. Colle said the move reverses past service reductions to off-peak service through TTC budget cuts mandated during the mayoral term of Rob Ford.

We’re addressing crowding standards and moving toward more comfortable and customer-friendly levels. – TTC chair Josh Colle

“I think we got to a point where the previous administration was saying just cram as many people onto a bus as possible and it will take care of itself,” said Colle during a press conference Monday at Finch station, which has six bus routes slated to receive better off-peak service as of September. “By implementing this service improvement we’re addressing crowding standards and moving toward more comfortable and customer-friendly levels. We’re listening to our loyal and very patient customers.”

improvements in north york The service improvements will be implemented on the following bus routes in North York, to take effect in September: 7 Bathurst, 24 Victoria Park, 25 Don Mills, 34 Eglinton East, 35 Jane, 36 Finch West, 39 Finch East, 42 Cummer, 54 Lawrence East, 60 Steeles West, 84 Sheppard West, 95 York Mills, 100 Flemingdon Park, 106 York University, 199 Finch Rocket. The new service will be funded through a $95-million budget boost made by city council earlier in the year for the TTC’s annual operating needs, and includes previously announced commitments for better all-night bus service and an enhanced 10-minute-or-better network. The funding commitment also funds the TTC’s recent move to make service completely free for kids. Currently the TTC’s off-peak loading standard for frequent service routes is to carry more riders than seats – articulated buses large enough to seat 46 have an acceptable standard of 53, for example – a move that was made simply to save money following the 2012 cuts, admitted TTC deputy CEO Chris Upfold. “This move today is to say it doesn’t actually makes sense to have a different crowding standard based on the frequency of service,” said Upfold.

From North York to New York and back: Karen Burthwright Panamania-commissioned Obeah Opera runs Aug. 4-8 DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com

posed by Culchahworks Arts Collective co-artistic director Nicole Brooks, who also plays Tibuta, a character taken straight out of history and one of the first people accused of and arrested for witchcraft, which set off the witch trials. The play features 14 actresses and tells the story of the witch trials from the perspective of Caribbean slave women. “The show has a huge spiritual component,” Burthwright said. “The music is unbelievable. The story is very unique and touching. It’s very historical and steeped in tradition and religion and spirituality. The custom of music and story-telling, survival, resistance, it’s from the Caribbean slave perspective.”

Broadway and U.S. national touring actor Karen Burthwright is back home in North York for some much needed Jamaican home cooking. And, while she’s enjoying her mom’s meals in the home she grew up in near Leslie Street and Finch Avenue, she’s also appearing on a local stage, away from the bright lights of New York. Burthwright is appearing in the Panamaniacommissioned world premiere of the musical/opera Obeah Opera, which runs from Aug. 4 to 8 at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts in The Distillery District. The actor, a first-generation Canadian of Jamaican descent, plays Candy, a Barbados-born slave engulfed in the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts in 1692. Obeah Opera features a wide array of musical styles, including spirituals, blues, jazz, gospel, traditional African, Caribbean folk, calypso, ska, R and B and reggae, all sung a cappella. It’s a challenging role, but one Burthwright relishes. “The music is challenging because it switches into many genres throughout the piece,” she said. “To learn something that is a cappella also requires a whole different skill set and a way of learning and switching of gears. It’s a challenge you want to step up to.” The show is an up-tempo musical written and com-

North York schooling Burthwright attended the Claude Watson School for the Arts in elementary school and then graduated from Earl Haig Secondary School, before getting a bachelor of arts degree in anthropology from McMaster University. She acted growing up, appearing on children’s television programs and did voice-over work while attending elementary school. She landed a role on the Toronto production of Mamma Mia! (2000), which later went on tour in the U.S. She did two more national tours in the U.S., with Hairspray and Dirty Dancing.

North Yorker Karen Burthwright is appearing in the Panamaniacommissioned Obeah Opera.

By 2009, she’d become a permanent U.S. resident and in 2012 got her Broadway debut in Jesus Christ Superstar. “It was the best thing that ever happened to me, no exaggeration. It’s a dream come true,” she said of her Broadway role. Burthwright said getting permanent resident status in the U.S. has opened her up to a world of possibilities as an actor, being able to book roles in Canada and the U.S. without the handicap of needing a work visa each time she lands a role. She said she’s proud of her Toronto roots and enjoys surprising her mom every time she returns home. When a recent Broadway show in which she was a cast member closed, the opportunity to appear on a Toronto stage came up, which she took without hesitation, saying the timing was perfect, helping her escape the hectic New York City scene for a little while.

“It’s nice to come back and see things that are familiar and have memories and recollections and work with a bunch of Canadian actors and actresses for a change,” Burthwright said. Another perk, of course, is her mom’s cooking, which she gets to enjoy for a few weeks before she returns to New York following the close of Obeah Opera. “My mom’s home cooking is the best thing in the world. There’s just nothing like it. She’s one of the best cooks I know. That Jamaican food goes down real fast,” she said with a laugh. Obeah Opera is presented by Cu l c h a h w o r k s A r t s Collective and Panamania in association with Nightwood Theatre and b current. Shows start at 7 p.m., plus there’s an additional 1 p.m. matinee performance on Saturday. The theatre is located at 50 Tank House Lane.

Olympic prudence needed in wake of Pan Am afterglow

Write us

W

e like the enthusiasm, goodwill and optimism Toronto’s Pan Am Games appear to have generated. But we must stress this is a time for prudence and caution as it relates to the Olympic Games and the city considering a bid. With the Pan Am Games portion of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games complete, what were once merely isolated whispers of a future Olympic bid for our city have grown noticeably louder – and in fairly fast fashion. As a concept, a Toronto Olympic bid is not an outrageous one. It really isn’t. Reviews of the Pan Am experience are largely positive. While there would be work needed to bring facilities up to Olympic standards, there’s been a good start made with the Pan Am/Parapan Am our view Games facilities. Also, the city’s and cultural diversity Objective review ethnic make Toronto an ideal showof Pan Am Games piece for a global event. And as the Pan Am Games the first step have shown, these kinds of events can serve as an important catalyst for needed infrastructure improvements that serve the community at large well after the Games have left town. But... one thing at a time, people. First, let’s have a proper assessment of the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games – which aren’t even over yet. This review should provide relevant, objective information that can help inform not only an Olympic bid decision, but also ongoing aspects of life in the city, particularly as it relates to traffic and transit. Also, Toronto has been down this Olympic bid route before. The two most recent bids being the one for the 1996 (which went to Atlanta) and 2008 (which went to Beijing) Games. The bids alone are a significant undertaking. It’s worth examining what happened in those instances. The post-Pan Am Games euphoria for Toronto is understandable. Indeed, it’s better than the alternative. But it will take more than euphoria to fuel a legitimate Olympic bid. The city must assess its needs and capabilities. So let’s rush to the finish line, not to the starting gate. We all need to take a deep breath, and understand just what something like this would entail before we decide it’s the right course of action.

There’s a holiday on Monday? Seriously? Well, once again the civic holiday long weekend seems to have snuck up on everybody. It’s been a fixture on the calendar for a long time now, but just can’t seem to get on the public’s radar. The fact that it’s simply known as the civic holiday probably isn’t helping much. Its catchier handle here in Toronto, Simcoe Day, and one would assume more marketable one, never caught on for some reason. But it’s summer for heaven’s sake. The hottest part of the season, too. Shouldn’t that alone be enough to inject some serious pizzazz into the occasion, no matter what you call it? Anyhow, if it’s caught you by surprise, not to worry. There’s still plenty of time to make plans and lots to see and do in and out of the city. Here’s just a small sample:

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY w Number One Spot To Camp Out In front of the window of the boss’s office on Friday afternoon, just to catch the look on the faces of employees after they find out the civic holiday is not a statutory holiday and therefore they will not be receiving stat pay. w The Place In Town To See Flora and Fauna One of my favourite hangouts, Cedarvale Ravine. My neighbours Flora and Fauna will be walking their dogs Snowflake and Cream Puff there throughout the long weekend in the early morning, early afternoon and early evening. For what it’s worth,

Lunch program feeds young Toronto campers

Tory urges caution on Toronto Olympic bid

>>>from page 1 summer, 40,000 lunches are distributed to youngsters attending 17 camps throughout the city. Every day, each camper receives a meat or vegetarian sandwich, fruit, cookies and juice. The Sodexo Foundation provides the food, kitchen space and volunteers to prepare the food, and food rescue charity Second Harvest is in charge of delivering the lunches. Funding is provided by the Geoffrey H. Wood Foundation. Debra Lawson, executive director of Second Harvest, said hunger is something often forgotten. “It’s something we don’t think of every day,” she said, “It was crucial the program was developed. It’s easy not to think about kids in the summer, but these kids deserve a right to have lunch.”

Basking in the afterglow of a successful Pan Am Games, Mayor John Tory urged caution before a decision is made on whether Toronto makes

The ISSYP is geared for grades 11 and 12 students from Canada and abroad who have a passion for physics and mathematics and intend to pursue physics studies in university. One of the highlights for her is to just be able to learn from a place where so many ideas have been developed. “Being inside Perimeter Institute, it’s so inspirational,” said Pan, who also has a keen interest in other sciences as well and is contemplating doing a double major in computer sciences and math. Greg Dick, director of educational outreach at Perimeter, said the selected students in the program are the next generation of exceptional physics talent. “The ISSYP program is meant to spark their imaginations, challenge their physics knowledge, and prepare them for the pursuit of physics at the university level,” he said in a statement. Students also heard from awardwinning theoretical particle physicists Natalia Toro and Philip Schuster, as well as cosmologists Latham Boyle and Kendrick Smith. another Olympic bid. With positive public perceptions of the Toronto region’s hosting of the Pan Am Games as well as the record number of medals won by Canada, chatter has risen about Toronto throwing its hat in for a shot at the

2024 Summer Olympics. But while figures such as Canadian Olympic Committee President Marcel Abut have enthusiastically voiced their support for Toronto 2024, Tory said more study will be required before the city can endorse a bid.

“We’re getting ahead of ourselves here, there are no letters being prepared or being readied for my signature,” said Tory following a press conference at Finch station Monday. Before a decision is made Tory promised city council, the public, organized labour and other stakeholders will have a chance to weigh-in on a potential bid. A full review of the Pan Am Games, which ended Sunday, will also play a part in determining whether the city, which lost out on bids for the 1996 and 2008 Summer Games, goes ahead with another Olympic aspiration. Even with a mid-September deadline looming for cities to formally register a bid for 2024 – or as in the case of Boston, withdraw from consideration – Tory insisted he was in no rush, and more concerned with the successful staging of the Parapan Am Games in August. “There’s a lot of work to do, starting with a successful Parapan Games and then a consultation process as extensive as possible,” he said. TTC deputy CEO Chris Upfold said an Olympic bid wasn’t on the transit commission’s radar at the moment, but could generate badly needed investment in transit should one succeed. “I think you would need an awful lot more investment in transit,” said Upfold. “Olympics are often a good way of driving that investment.

Paralympic swimmer takes role with Canadian team’s staff DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Chelsea Gotell is a bit jealous. The three-time Paralympic swimmer and five-time Paralympic gold medalist has competed around the world, but never once at home. “As a retired athlete I’m pretty jealous,” said Gotell, waiting with

a crew of Pan Am athletes to purchase tickets for the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games. “I never got to compete on home soil, to have this awareness-building opportunity, not for sport in Canada but for Para Sport. This is absolutely ginormous.” Gotell is participating in the Games that begin Aug. 7 as a

member of Team Canada’s Mission Staff. “I’m the athlete mentor for the whole team,” she said. “I’ve done this in London and in Socchi. I’m glad to support the athletes with whatever they need, whether it’s help with the pressure or they could just be asking for chocolate milk.”

On Tuesday, she was on hand to help encourage Torontonians to buy tickets for the events. According to TO2015 spokesperson Neala Barton, so far the Parapan Games have sold 50,000 out of 200,000 tickets. The Games open at the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium Aug. 7 and continue to Aug. 15.

Lowe’s to occupy former Target location at Centerpoint Lowe’s is moving into the former Target location at Centerpoint Mall in North York. This will be one of 12 Canadian locations left vacant by Target that the home improvement retailer is moving into, and one of 14 new stores it plans to open in the country. The company plans to have 54 stores in Canada, up from the current 40. Its 40th store is

scheduled to open in August in Saskatchewan. No opening date has been provided for the North York store. This is one of two former Target locations Lowe’s has purchased in Toronto. The other is at East York’s Shoppers World Danforth. The company said the timing of each of the store openings will vary on construction and permitting schedules.

“These 14 new locations are a tremendous win for us in Canada, accelerating our growth across the country and bringing our total store count to 54 locations,” said Sylvain Prud’homme, president of Lowe’s Canada, in a news release. “We continue to receive a positive reaction from our customers on our store experience and this helps us reach additional communities more

quickly.” The company said the n e w s t o re s w i l l c re a t e approximately 2,000 jobs in Canada. Lowe’s acquisition of 12 former Target locations and its Milton distribution centre cost about $148 million. Lowe’s has retail operations in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico through its stores and online and a workforce of more than 265,000.

HOV lane update Beginning Tuesday, vehicles with two or more occupants have been able to use the temporary high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes that were in place for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. During the Pan Am Games, the HOV lanes were restricted to vehicles with three or more occupants. The lanes will also remain open to the following vehicles:

w emergency vehicles w public transit w licensed taxis w airport limousines w electric vehicles with green licence plates (on provincial 400-series highways only) w motorcycles (on city roads only such as the Don Valley Parkway, Gardiner Expressway, Lake Shore Boulevard) The temporary HOV lanes will be in place until Aug. 18.

Showdown in Spadina-Fort York the city best bet to replace Stephen Harper and the Conservatives in government. Things appear very different in 2015. It’s not trending well for the Liberals, and the fortunes of Mulcair’s New Democrats have risen considerably. If the trend in polls continues, Vaughan will have to rely principally on his own record as a local representative – which is not inconsiderable. Chow, conversely, will be riding an orange wave propelled further by the profile she built during the 2014 mayoral campaign. She didn’t win, and didn’t, in the end, even run a terribly effective campaign. It was an honourable defeat. And there is that orange wave. In most elections, the NDP policy book shows up as a utopian document no one seriously thinks has a chance of being implemented. But this

time, promises to fund child care and public housing and transit infrastructure carry the weight of possibility. It will be a hard fight, for that. A year ago, Vaughan was a serious catch for Trudeau and the Liberals. On Tuesday, he made it clear he still is. “Olivia Chow has never given me a free ride in this city and I’ve prevailed,” Vaughan told reporters. And that much is true. He took over Chow’s seat on council when she left for Ottawa by beating her preferred candidate: now-city councillor) Joe Cressy. And the new riding concentrates Vaughan’s support, and contains polls where Chow did not do as well in her bid for mayor. What it boils down to: in 2015, it’s a good bet the new Member from Spadina-Fort York will be a member of the governing party. All other things being, in this case, nearly equal.

It is going to be a hot time in Spadina-Fort York this summer and fall. Two of Toronto’s highestprofile progressive pols, Olivia Chow and Adam Vaughan, will be facing off in the newly minted riding. Vaughan, a former broadcast journalist and city councillor, is the incumbent of sorts; he has held the vanishing federal riding of Trinity-Spadina for a year, winning it for the Liberals in a byelection necessitated by New Democrat Chow’s departure to run an unsuccessful mayoral bid. It wasn’t a great surprise when Vaughan took the byelection. Indeed, voters in the NDP-supporting riding could have been forgiven for not realizing they weren’t voting NDP again when they elected Vaughan. Several of his colleagues privately wondered why he hadn’t joined Thomas Mulcair’s team, given all that. But Vaughan threw in with the Liberals for a pragmatic reason: in the spring of 2014, Justin Trudeau seemed the

Community Council aims to protect pair of heritage buildings North York Community Council is aiming to protect a pair of heritage buildings, one a 1945-built industrial building and the other a 1893 farm house. Community council stated its intention to designate the home, located at 1299 Don Mills Rd. (George Gray House), under the Ontario Heritage Act, at its June 16 meeting. The home is already listed on the city’s heritage registry. The community council decision was approved by city council at its July meeting. The city must

The owners of the home stated their objection to the designation at last

month’s community council meeting, asking the city to hold off on the designation a while longer. City staff said the home, north of Lawrence Avenue East, is the only surviving farm house of its type and vintage in North York. Following the notice to designate if there is an objection to the designation, the matter is referred to the Conservation Review Board. If there is no objection, the city will be able to issue a bylaw to designate the property. Heritage designation

acknowledges a property’s cultural value to the community and helps ensure its conservation. Owners of such properties can apply for heritage grants to assist with the conservation of such buildings. In another move, community council has voted to add 33 Laird Dr. to its

heritage register. Adding a property to the register flags it against demolition or alteration and gives the city 60 days notice before issuing a demolition permit. This gives the municipality time to consider pursuing heritage designation. The listing was approved by city council

in July as well. The building is a brick and cast stone, one and two-storey office, showroom and workshop. It is the original building of the Sheridan Equipment Company Ltd.

The TTC ran plenty of extra service during the Games, including earlier Sunday subway starts, and received sterling reviews for the most part. Queens Quay was recently re-opened after an ambitious redesign that saw the dingy concrete afterthought transformed into a multifaceted promenade that has proved a hit, judging by the hundreds of revellers last weekend. But with increased traffic comes confusion – and sometimes fisticuffs – as evidenced by a recent video of an altercation between a cyclist and pedestrian captured on the street, which added signage hasn’t been able to prevent. I even saw a vehicle traveling on the Martin Goodman Path on Saturday night, which is supposed to be reserved for cyclists’ use. Rahul Gupta is the Mirror’s transit reporter.
