North York Harvest Food Bank (NYHFB) is hoping to collect $100,000 and 100,000 pounds of food for this year’s Spring Food Drive. The drive, sponsored by organic and natural products company Hain Celestial Canada, wraps up Friday, April 10. “This spring help us fill more than an empty plate by donating food and funds to North York Harvest Food Bank, assuring that we can stock up for the summer months ahead when shelves are at their emptiest,” Ryan Noble, NYHFB executive director, said in a release. “Together we can share the joy of a healthy meal and make sure families have enough food all summer long.” Needed items include canned meat and fish, dried beans, cooking oils and whole grains. Attempted murder charge after attack at North York police station A Brampton man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking a Toronto police officer with a hammer in North York last Friday. Police said the man, armed with a hammer and knife, entered the front lobby of 31 Division, 40 Norfinch Dr., around 4:20 p.m. and approached a female officer in the front counter area. He then allegedly swung the hammer at her head, striking her at an angle but not directly. The injured officer, along with another officer assisting with the arrest, were treated in hospital for minor injuries. Both have been released. Norman Badria, 41, has been charged with seven offences, including attempted murder and assault with a weapon.

North York student named Woman Leader Of Tomorrow North York’s Azar Allasvandi, a George Brown College student, has been awarded for her leadership by Enactus Canada and HSBC Bank Canada. She received the 2015 HSBC Woman Leader of Tomorrow Award for Central Canada at the 2015 Enactus Canada Regional Exposition in Mississauga earlier this month. Allasvandi is one of eight regional winners across the country. “At HSBC, we strongly believe in the importance of a diverse, highperforming and inclusive culture – in our organization and in the wider business community,” said Sandra Stuart, HSBC Bank Canada CEO, in a news release. “We are delighted to be working with Enactus to recognize and encourage emerging leaders at the start of their careers through the delivery of the HSBC Woman Leader of Tomorrow Awards and HSBC Women’s Leadership Forum.”

Azar Allasvandi with her award.

Allasvandi’s Enactus teammates are drawn to her ability to accomplish concrete results and

are inspired to contribute more themselves, Enactus Canada said in the release. The local student is currently managing two Enactus projects; the first is a women’s empowerment initiative and the second teaches at-risk youth how to grow and sell their own produce, which allows them to fund their education. Enactus Canada is the largest student leadership development organization in the country, the organization says. The awards recognize, celebrate and honour female university and college students, regionally and nationally, who exemplify success and inspire their peers, community and country through entrepreneurial leadership. The eight regional winners will travel to the 2015 Enactus Canada National Exposition in Toronto in May in the hopes of being named the national 2015 HSBC Woman Leader of Tomorrow.

More York University classes resumed this week Strike continues for more than 2,500 teaching assistants More classes resumed Tuesday at York University despite the ongoing strike by union members representing teaching assistants and graduate assistants. “If prevented from returning to class, many of our students face serious and urgent consequences, including those related to accreditation, certification, placement and graduation,” said Mamdouh Shoukri, president of York University, in a statement released yesterday. “At the same time, we know that there are difficulties associated with crossing picket lines, and that some students have expressed a reluctance or refusal to do so. The challenge is

that both positions are legitimate, and so we have done everything possible to give our students the choice to return to their studies in order to complete their terms.” Only the unit representing contract faculty in the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 3903 accepted the university’s offer. About 2,600 teaching assistants, graduate assistants and research assistants remain on strike since March 3. Shoukri noted that with contract faculty no longer on strike, an “overwhelming majority of our courses and services can be available, and in a context where we are so close to the end of the academic year, it would be irresponsible not to consider resuming as much academic activity as possible.” Additional courses from the following faculties that have resumed this week include the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and

Design, Faculty of Education, Glendon, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Health classes not already resumed. Classes for the Faculty of Environmental Studies and Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies that have not already resumed are scheduled to begin Monday. “Please note that some courses directed by CUPE 3903 (Unit 1) members and who remain on strike will not resume unless those members express a desire to return,” added Rhonda Lenton, vice-president academic of York University. “In addition, tutorials and labs associated with these and other courses may not be active. Some assignments may not be graded until after the strike is settled.” Meanwhile, the union called on the university’s senate executive to refrain from opening classes until a settlement is reached, noting 5,000

undergraduate students have also signed a petition, pledging to refuse to cross the picket lines. “We need York to come to the bargaining table and negotiate a fair deal,” said Faiz Ahmed, chair of CUPE 3903, in a statement released this week. “Opening classes before reaching a settlement will create chaos and confusion among students, who should not be pressured to cross picket lines. It also runs the risk of prolonging the strike unnecessarily, by taking a business-as-usual approach.” Although classes have resumed, Shoukri said the university remains in contact with the provincially appointed mediator and looks forward to resuming negotiations. – Clark Kim

Diversity Our Strength Diversity Our Strength – it’s Toronto’s motto. It’s also the name of the newest Metroland Media Toronto online portal. Launched this week, www. insidetoronto.com/diversity is a growing compilation of news, events and resources dedicated to reaching Toronto’s diverse communities. The city is home to people who speak more than 140 languages, half of Toronto’s population was born outside of Canada and the city is a place where nearly half of residents’ first language is something other than English. “Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world,” said Paul Futhey, project lead and editor with Metroland Media Toronto. “It’s important that we find new ways to present our content to our readers.” Included in the website: w NEWS: Metroland Media Toronto’s news coverage of Toronto’s diverse communities: available in a general feed and also accessible in sections based on world geography. A world news feed is also available. w EVENTS: an events section with photo galleries of recent cultural celebrations as well as links to upcoming multicultural events. w RESOURCES: a section that includes some helpful tips for newcomers to the city, key statistics and a call for directory submissions. As the site grows, we’re looking for significant community involvement, whether it’s news tips, event submissions, or community organizations and cultural centres creating online profiles to be part of a directory. “Our goal is always to find ways to better connect people to their communities,” Futhey said. “We want the community to be a part of this.” Questions? or coverage of one of North America’s most multicultural cities, our newest online project is a great fit. This week marks the launch of the latest web project on insidetoronto.com: Diversity Our Strength. It can be accessed at www.insidetoronto.com/diversity Borrowing its name from the City of Toronto’s motto, this project is an online source of news, events and information about Toronto’s diverse communities. And there’s plenty to cover. A city of nearly 2.8 million people, Toronto is home to more than 140 spoken languages. Nearly half of Toronto’s residents learned a first language other than English. Seemingly every corner of the city hosts vibrant cultural festivals whose roots come from other lands. In Diversity Our Strength, you can: • Visit the news section for Metroland Media Toronto’s coverage of Toronto’s our view multicultural communities and view stories organized by world geography. There is a feed of world Share your news coverage as well. • On our events page, see photo perspectives galleries of recent festivals and with us preview upcoming events in the community. • Find helpful tips in our resources section to acclimating to life in Toronto. Find out more about the services available to newcomers in the city. Check out a linguistic breakdown of Toronto’s population by neighbourhood. As the site prepares to grow further, the community and the organizations that serve it have roles to play, too. Are you a non-profit agency that serves Toronto’s immigrant population or a cultural centre? We want to list your profile. Do you have a story idea? We’d like to see it. Do you have an event to share with the community? You have a platform to do so. Toronto is a city that prides itself on its citizens being able to celebrate and respect their differences. Anything that enables citizens from diverse backgrounds to gather together can help forge lasting connections at the community level. Communities benefit greatly when a wide variety of perspectives and experiences are at the table. column

Breaking into song on March Break Questions I was at a loss for words heading into March Break, but as luck would have it, not at loss for song. My name is Jamie and I’m here to say, I almost didn’t get this column in the paper today. I mean it, folks. I’m not making this up. It’s not my usual silly poetic license stuff. I can send you a selfie with me crossing my heart. I was getting nowhere fast, right from the start. I was at my wit’s end, I tell ya. Didn’t know what to do. Not having a topic by now was something new. And taunting me was the blank screen on my Mac. There was nary a word on it – that’s a fact, Jack. To be honest, I couldn’t even remember my name. I had no idea how to get in the game. Most perplexing of all, is this is the ideal week, and I’m not saying that tongue in cheek. March Break is a treasure

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY trove of topics aplenty. No way I was expecting to come up empty. Why would I, with so many great festivals in store? And bustling malls filled with entertainment galore. Then there’s the Ontario Science Centre and the zoos. Ripley’s Aquarium, the ROM, how could I lose? So I sought inspiration in the neighbourhood. Visited every rink, field and park I possibly could. Hopped on the subways, buses and streetcars. Even headed to Yorkville to reach for the stars. Checked out YouTube. Called my nephew on Skype. Googled and Twittered away long into the night. But after looking hither, thither and yon and back again,

I still couldn’t put pen to paper or paper to pen. I had a mental block bigger than the CN Tower. And the seconds were ticking down to the very last hour. Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five ... ah what’s the use? No way to make it in time, I needed an excuse, Like my dog ate the column. They’ll swallow that line. Or the server was down. That works every time. Then a light bulb went off inside my head. Why agonize over this? Why not sing about it instead? So, I put two and two together and just like that, Came up with the I Barely Beat My March Break Deadline Rap. Oh yeahhhhh. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at jamie.wayne@sympatico.ca

remain on sex ed course

To the editor: As a retired teacher I have been most interested to hear about the new course for sex education. However, there has been no mention how this will be implemented with the present financial shortfall. Will teachers be taken out of their classes to attend courses for teaching these new aspects or will they merely be confronted with the new syllabus with instructions to “teach this”? Also, who will be responsible for the teaching in high schools: The home room teacher? The phys-ed teacher? Will the students in elective programs be covered? There are still many questions to be answered and explained. Marian Yorke

Mulcair’s support affords Tory some much-needed leverege david nickle the city Affordable daycare and a higher minimum wage would mitigate the income inequality that is degrading the city. The $90 million in gas tax money would go a long way to improving and just maintaining the sputtering Toronto Transit Commission system. Poverty and transportation have been widely identified as pressing issues for Torontonians, and Tory has put both of those things at the top of his to-do list. Tory and Mulcair met Monday at Toronto City Hall, the day following Mulcair’s speech. The two faced TV cameras and reporters immediately afterward, comfortably side-by-side and clearly on the same page. Our mayor was generous in his praise for the policy, but careful. He noted the gas tax promise was one that built on transit funding that had been initiated by the Liberals and

safety blitz for March Break wPolice Toronto Police Service has launched a safety blitz for pedestrians through March Break until Sunday. As part of the March Safe campaign, police are pledging to pay special attention not only to jaywalkers, but also vehicles making conditions unsafe for law-abiding pedestrians. According to a news release for the campaign, at least half of all fatal collisions involve pedestrians, of which there were 31 in 2014. “All officers will be paying particular attention to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians who commit traffic violations that may jeopardize pedestrian safety,” reads the release. It is a good thing former Ontario Progressive Conservative party leader John Tory is taking the non-partisan part of his job so seriously. Otherwise, his meeting with federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair would have been very awkward indeed. Mulcair came to Toronto early this week bearing gifts – or at least the promise of gifts. The leader of Canada’s Official Opposition told a crowd at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre that Toronto was his and his party’s favourite: that the city and the region were the most important in Canada, and that money and attention would flow here from a federal NDP government. To specifics: the NDP would create 164,000 affordable daycare spots in the Greater Toronto Area over the next eight years; the minimum wage would be set federally at $15 an hour; and the GTA would receive $90 million a year more in funding from an increased share of the gas tax. enshrined by the Conservative government. It was more, and that was good. And it was hard not to like that notion that Toronto was the most important place in Canada. Still, Tory wouldn’t endorse – and he would likely be foolish to do so. Mulcair and the NDP are the Official Opposition in only the most tenuous sense; the party gained its unprecedented influence under the irreplaceable leadership of the late Jack Layton. The promises Mulcair made are more powerful as ideas right now than they are as likely outcomes. But that is all right. Mulcair has put forward the best and most reasonable federal agenda for cities since another unlikely prime minister, Paul Martin, almost a decade ago. And that gives Tory some leverage in an arena where until recently it seemed as though he had very little.

Visentin began the administrative work in his home’s basement office and provided music lessons at Yorkwoods along with other instructors. Then they close each two-hour after-school program by going into one of three classes: choir, orchestra, and drumming. The students play on string instruments, including violin, viola, cello, flute and clarinet. Visentin said hearing the children speak for themselves is the best way to gauge whether the program is successful or not. Mabbott said he hopes the music program does more than churn out future musicians. “They’re kids, but they seemed like an extraordinary group of kids to me. They were so kind and disciplined. They were incredibly polite and thoughtful and articulate. I’ve worked with all sorts of people in this industry and these guys were my favourite and they called me Mr. Mike.” Additionally, music offers indirect benefits to life, Mabbott said. “It’s almost a catharsis. If I pick up a guitar and play for half an hour after a hard day, it doesn’t solve the problems, but it just gives you a few minutes of mercy and of calm and of joy,” he said. “It makes these children happy and hopeful.”

Mayor John Tory announces Francis Atta of North York as one of the torchbearers for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games during a ceremony Monday at the Ontario Science Centre.

Residents get ready to carry the torch >>>from page 1 kids who grew up with challenges in life but made the most of it. “This is more about inspiring the youth of our neighbourhood,” added Atta, 28. “It’s not for me. This is for all of us. There are good people that come from Jane and Finch.” Patricia Israel, 63, who lives in the Victoria Park Avenue and O’Connor Drive area, said she was “absolutely thrilled” after being notified she was chosen to be a torchbearer. Israel applied online where she wrote about her love for sports and how she’s been able use sports to keep active in a wheelchair.

“It’s an honour,” she said, especially looking forward to having Toronto host the largest multisport event to be held in Canada. “It’s going to be busy but it’s our city and it’s a great city.” Thousands of torchbearers will carry the torch through 130 communities with the relay in Canada starting May 30 and making its final stop on July 10 at the opening ceremony of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. Public school board cuts hundreds of teaching jobs to balance budget CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Hundreds of teaching jobs at the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) will be cut after trustees approved the staffing allocations and passed a balanced operating budget for the next school year. But TDSB chair Shaun Chen said the board is confident most of the cuts will be made through attrition or by not

replacing teachers who plan to retire this year. “Getting here has been no easy task,” said Chen, after trustees passed the budget at the regular board meeting last Wednesday. The budget presented to trustees included cutting 88 elementary full-time equivalent (FTE) teaching positions down to 10,719, and 168.5 secondary FTE teaching positions down to 4,896.5.

Board staff noted the allocation of jobs are primarily driven by enrolment numbers, which the Ontario Ministry of Education uses to determine how much funding to give to each school board in the province. In Toronto, enrolment of high school students is expected to decline by 2,000 in 2015, but increase by about 200 elementary students. While trustees approved the

staffing allocations for all positions, they voted against cutting 33.5 FTE special education support staff positions that include noon-hour assistants and special needs educational assistants. Beaches-East York Trustee Sheila Cary-Meagher expressed concern about losing congregated classes, where special needs students receive more specialized support, and integrating those students into

regular classrooms with less individual attention from teachers as a result of cutting special education support staff. “I’m blaming the province for forcing you to do this,” Cary-Meagher said to board staff that’s had to find cuts to balance the operating budget, which faced a $16.5-million projected deficit this year. A motion to add 10 FTE special education support

staff back into the operating budget was passed, reducing 22.5 FTE positions overall down to 2,462.5 for the next school year. As a result, the balanced budget plan that included a requirement to find $2.9 million of in-year savings will have to find another half-million dollars totalling $3.5 million.

Get started with spring renos and maintenance Spring is just around the corner, and that’s usually the time when homeowners start looking around the home and consider what improvements they might like to make when warm weather finally hits. Perhaps you’d like to breathe new life into an outdated kitchen. Or you’ve been dreaming all winter about hosting a BBQ on a new deck. But few renovation projects go off without a hitch. Homeowners considering doing it themselves may be surprised at just how much work and coordination goes into any project. “People think it’s easy, I can do

it myself, I can find a cabinet guy,” says Paul Switzeny, co-owner of The HandyForce, who recently opened a second location in North York. “No project goes totally as planned, but we’ll be there to deal with it.” The HandyForce is a full solution company. From small maintenance repair jobs, to complete renovations, everything is done inhouse by the team of tradespeople and experts coordinated by a dedicated Customer Experience Manager assigned to each project.
