Home opener for merged Astros Sunday The North York Astros are hoping a merger with the Toronto Vasas organization will help turn around their fortunes in the 12-team Canadian Soccer League. The merged club, now known as Astros Vasas FC, has opened its season with two road losses: last Friday, May 17 3-0 to Etobicoke-based Serbian White Eagles, and May 12 1-0 to York Region Shooters.

“It will take a few games,” said Laszlo Deak, assistant GM and president of Toronto Vasas, a branch of the Budapest-based club, on the CSL website. Astros Vasas will host their home opener Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Esther Shiner Stadium against Kingston FC. The Astros sported two wins last season (2-19-1) and were winless in 2011 (0-19-6).

HOW DOES YOUR FRONT GARDEN GROW?

North York gardeners, it’s time once again to get out your spades, trimmers, hoses and competitive spirits. The third annual North York Great Front Gardens Awards is now underway. Sponsored by the North York Garden Club and Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation, the awards recognize North York residents and organizations that turn their front yards into gardening works of art. This year, non-residential spaces, including schools, businesses and hospitals, are invited to compete. Awards will be presented in the categories of traditional residential front gardens with lawn, environmental alternative gardens with little or no lawn, condo and apartment buildings with front lawns viewable from the street, and non-residential spaces. Gardens must be in the area bounded by Steeles Avenue on the north, Hwy. 401 on the south, Allen Road/Dufferin Street on the west and Victoria Park on the east. The deadline for submissions is July 8. To nominate a garden, visit www.northyorkgardenclub. ca, email info@northyorkgardenclub.ca or call Gail Bebee at 416-733-0221. Gardens will be judged in late July or early August on such criteria as design, use of plant material, condition and maintenance, hard landscaping such as pathways and stonework, and environmental practices. Awards will be presented Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Edithvale Community Centre. YORK DENTAL HYGIENIST ON BOARD ◗NORTH

The role of the volunteer organization is to advance the profession and raise public awareness about the importance of good oral health for overall health. Dental hygienists work in a variety of public and private settings. A growing number are opening their own clinics and mobile practices, which gives the public access to more affordable dental services, the association said. That is a benefit to low-income families, those without insurance and patients unable to get to a dentist’s office because they are housebound or live in a long-term care facility or a remote community. The association is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Weekend event an invitation to connect

T

he annual Doors Open event takes place again this weekend giving residents across the city access to culturally significant buildings within their own neighbourhoods. It’s an excellent opportunity to learn more about the community by visiting the 150 local buildings with historical, architectural and social significance selected this year. Visit Applewood, The Shaver Homestead in Etobicoke, which is an example of a typical 19th century farmhouse. In North York, the Gibson House Museum built in 1851 in the Georgian Revival style of architecture will be open to visitors. Or step inside Fool’s Paradise, the former home of Canadian artist Doris McCarthy, situated on the 12-acre property on the Scarborough Bluffs, which she bought back in 1939. New venues include the Toronto Police Service 11 Division building built on the site of the historic 1914 Carleton Village Public School. OUR VIEW Scarborough Arts is also welcoming visitors to its current home in 1920s house in Harrison Estate Opportunity aPark. to learn about But Doors Open is more than just about exploring old buildings community for the first time. The weekend event allows residents to better understand the history and fabric of their own community. For example, the interfaith communities of South Etobicoke have come together allowing residents to explore the diversity of faith communities by opening the doors to such buildings as the Bosnian Islamic Centre, Mimico Baptist Church and the Canadian Sufi Cultural Centre, to name a few. The theme of Doors Open this year being “Creators, Makers and Innovators” also features many older buildings that have been “redesigned, reinvented and repurposed into modern 21st century spaces that host collaborative teams of imaginative people who are creating new ways of thinking, making and doing.” It’s an exercise the whole community can be a part of beyond the Doors Open event where people can challenge themselves to view where they live differently and contribute creatively to make a positive impact in their neighbourhood. Start this weekend by taking a look inside those buildings you might normally walk by every day. Doors Open runs Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26. Visit the city’s website at www.toronto.ca/ doorsopen/2013 for a full list of venues and the specific hours open to the public.

Toronto attractions more than just downtown To the editor: Re: ‘Without a casino, city needs to look at touristfriendly’ project The City, May 9. David Nickle wrote that Toronto needs downtown projects to draw visitors. Toronto has already invested in a wonderful tourist attraction that is currently being overlooked by the politicians. In Scarborough, the Toronto Zoo is one of the

largest zoos in the world, promotes itself as Canada’s premier zoo and has a reputation of being one of the top zoos in the world. In times past, the Toronto Zoo was a valued asset. It attracted visitors from near and far. It was a part of what made us proud to be citizens of Toronto. We still have the opportunity to make our zoo into a major a tourist attraction. Part of what is needed to do

that is for the current crop of politicians to begin to believe in the zoo as something more than a line in the city’s budget. To convince the politicians of the value of our zoo, call your councillor and tell them what a great time you’ve had visiting your local, world-class zoo. We can draw visitors to parts of the city that are not downtown. Allan Baker

Worried about vision loss? Get regular eye exams May is Vision Health Month and according to CNIB research, Canadians are more afraid of losing their eyesight than almost anything else. Given that one in seven of us will develop a serious eye disease, it’s a fear that’s certainly not unfounded. Fortunately, 75 per cent of vision loss can be pre-

vented or treated and there are many things we can do to prevent blindness and vision loss. The most important step is to get regular eye exams by a doctor of optometry. The problem is that many Canadians aren’t getting their eyes checked as often as they should because they think their eyesight

and their eye health are the same thing. They’re not. 20/20 vision and eye disease are not mutually exclusive. The reality is that many eye diseases have no symptoms in their early stages, so someone may not realize they have an eye disease until it’s too late to get treatment that could save their sight. That’s why

it’s crucial to have regular, comprehensive eye exams, regardless of how old you are. In recognition of Vision Health Month, we recommend people take action for their eyes and book an eye exam today. Dr. Keith Gordon vice-president, research, CNIB

The TTC should provide bike racks To the editor: Re: ‘TTC bike racks a waste of money,’ Letters, May 7. Reader Kenneth Singh thinks the installation of bicycle racks at the front of TTC buses is a waste of taxpayers’ money. My daughter and her family live in east Mississauga, but she works in west Toronto. When they were first trying to manage with only one vehicle, she would cycle to the first Mississauga bus stop near her home. She then would secure her bike onto the bike rack at the front of the bus and travel on the bus to its furthest eastern destination in Toronto, disembark the bus and retrieve her bike and cycle the rest of the way to work into Toronto. Meanwhile, my son chooses cycling as his principle means of transportation. But he chose to take his bike on public transit one time in order to

accompany me part of the way home. I know there are other times he combines the two modes of transportation. So it is incorrect to suggest, as this reader does, that “buses are for carrying passengers and bicycles are for people to ride.” In this “new” economy, people are looking for alternate and cheaper ways of getting around. So whether it is a couple with young children trying to manage with only one car or a single male choosing to have no car at all, availability of different transit options can only enhance their quality of life. The bike racks are not ornaments. They are a necessary addition to accessing public transportation and I am happy to have my tax dollars go to support this relatively inexpensive installation. Myrna Markovich

Bike racks serve important function To the editor: Re: ‘TTC bike racks a waste of money,’ Letters, May 7. Do the people who complain about bicycle racks on buses have the same sentiments about elevators in the subway station, ramps and automatic doors at barrier-free entrances or sidewalks in suburbia? Do these people choose not to purchase the spare tire to save a few dollars on a new car? There are many occasions when the bicycle racks are needed – when one doesn’t have the nerve to cross the DVP along Lawrence Avenue East by bicycle; when one is too far away from home to get back before sunset; when one is caught in a rain; when the bicycle is damaged or when one is suffering with a leg cramp. The next time you see a bicycle rack on a bus that

is not being used, be glad the cyclist who would be using it is safely riding on the road, which is what he wants to do. I certainly hope those who complain about bicycle racks are not the same people who complain about strollers on the bus. If the racks are removed and a cyclist needs to take the bus home, guess where the bicycle will be? David Louie

School boards need to be run more efficiently To the editor: Ontario’s education system is experiencing some challenges. It seems that a few education boards in this province are having difficulty in balancing their books in spite of our present government’s mandate. I believe they can do this by cutting the fat in their school boards, which they don’t want to do. They have highly paid, large bureaucracies, which do not want to do this as it cuts their own jobs. Look at the recently released Sunshine List that shows people making $100,000 or more and you will see many names belonging to various school boards. I think it is time our government takes bold action and creates some kind of competition for these education boards. I recommend: a) The government should allow charter

schools to be operated here. The charter school concept has been successful south of the border. Results show they are getting amazing results operating in tough inner-city neighbourhoods. b) Parents should be able to send their children to private school with the province putting into place a system where parents get a voucher to be used at their school, with extra costs being the responsibility of the parents. c) The last solution would be to force these school boards to balance their books and send in independent forensic auditors if they don’t. It is our money and it should be spent on highquality education for our children. Our children must have high standards of education so they can compete in today’s global world. They are our future. Annual festival had its launch in North York this week >>>from page 1 This partnership is a natural fit for us.” Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival will officially launch July 9 at Nathan Phillips Square downtown from noon to 2 p.m. and will wrap up Aug. 4. Due to construction on the CNE grounds, the route of the Grand Parade Aug. 3 will be different this year. The staging area for some 16,000 costumed masqueraders and floats is being moved to the north end of the property, meaning the parade will travel the width of the grounds before moving onto Lake Shore Boulevard. Admission must be paid for those watching from inside the CNE, while spectators along Lake Shore can view the parade for free. Dr. Hooley McLaughlin,

The trouble with writing a weekly column that appears on Thursday, is that when a mayor finds himself in allegedly hideous and frankly filthy trouble on the previous Friday, it’s tough to find something new to say. So it is with Mayor Rob Ford, and revelation last Friday of the cell phone video that according to two respected journalists at the Toronto Star alleges to show our mayor smoking crack cocaine. Earlier in the cycle, I might have joined the chorus of every other columnist working in Toronto media, and said it was time for the mayor to resign. I’ll take a slightly different tack, and speak directly to Ford Nation. It might be time, Ford Nation, to call it quits. Regardless of what happens with the video, it has come time to face some facts.

david nickle the city The mayor, when you elected him, came with a certain amount of baggage including a 1999 impaired driving conviction in Florida. There was a certain amount of baggage that you were willing to forgive, because you are a forgiving bunch. Some commentators say, in fact, that Rob Ford’s foibles have been a part of his charm to Ford Nation: that it shows him to be a regular guy, a guy that sometimes screws up, and not one of the elites. It is time, Ford Nation, to give up on forgiveness – at least inasmuch as that forgiveness translates to continued fealty, and worse, identification. Because Rob Ford is not like you. You do not leave impor-

tant work meetings to coach football; you don’t court disaster by ignoring potential conflicts-ofinterest in your job. You don’t, as a rule, embarrass yourselves, your family and your community. You are stand-up people, and you don’t need to stand up for this. In giving up on forgiving our mayor, you need not give up on the agenda he ran on. There are other good fiscally-conservative politicians in the wings – many of whom have assisted in our mayor’s fulfillment of his agenda this term. In 2014, you will likely have the opportunity to support one or more of them to continue that agenda. Call this, Ford Nation, your moment of clarity.

One in three Canadian kids are left on the side of the rink In Canada, one in three families cannot afford to enrol their children in organized sport or recreation activities because of financial barriers (Vision Critical 2011). Six years ago, Marlee Stein wanted to learn to skate, but she didn’t think it would be possible coming from a family of four kids and facing the struggles of a parent battling illness. Through a family support service in her community, Marlee and her family were introduced to Canadian Tire Jumpstart. The Jumpstart program supported Marlee’s skating lessons and skate Canada membership through financial assistance. A year after lacing up her skates for the first time, Marlee decided to turn her desire to skate into a goal – to one-day join the Canadian Olympic Figure Skating team. Through Jumpstart, Marlee is able to continue her skating lessons and is working to achieve this dream. “Jumpstart helped me get the lessons I needed to enter some very challenging provincial and national figure skating competitions in Canada,” says Marlee Stein.

“With all the lessons I have taken, I hope it opens up opportunities to eventually become a part of the Canadian Olympic team.” “The benefits of kids participating in sports affects their entire lives,” says Johnny Misley, President, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “Jumpstart is dedicated to removing barriers so financially disadvantaged children can simply participate, and ultimately pusue their dreams.” Kids who are able to participate in organized sport and recreation,

outside school hours, gain many short and long term benefits including increased self esteem, greater self confidence, leadership skills, and better grades. Despite the financial hardships many Canadian families face, there is a way to get kids into the game, no matter what barrier. By covering the cost of registration, equipment and/or transportation, Canadian Tire Jumpstart has helped 570,000 (and counting) children like Marlee participate in the sport of their choice. Help kids from your community by visiting Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Atmosphere, Mark’s and Canadian Tire Gas+ stores as well as Pita Pit locations throughout the month of May to donate $2 in exchange for a red ball, with 100 per cent of all donations going to help kids play. The May campaign will be celebrated on Jumpstart Day on Saturday, May 25, with fun activities taking place at participating Canadian Tire Retail stores across the country, including charity barbeque’s or GoClean waterless car washes. Visit jumpstart.canadiantire.ca to learn more.

Transportation minister weighs in on plans prior to Metrolinx funding meeting RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com As Metrolinx gets set to release recommendations for new taxes and fees at its meeting on Monday, Ontario Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Glen Murray said he was not surprised municipalities such as Toronto opted not to endorse a single revenue tool. In an interview Tuesday, Murray said he and Premier Kathleen Wynne had expected dissent from some politicians, regarding their opinions of the 11 proposed taxes and fees Metrolinx sought feedback on. Those revenue tools would raise $2 billion annually to pay for the completion of the $50 billion Big Move transit plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). “If you go into a conversation only looking for people to agree with you, you’ll be most sadly disappointed,” said Murray. “I think there have been

some very good ideas put forward by most municipalities and there’s been some, as we expected, who haven’t agreed, and we respect that.” During a marathon Toronto City Council meeting during the second week of May, councillors voted to reject staff recommendations on the Metrolinx revenue tools and to support a Scarborough subway line to replace a fully-funded light rail transit line already agreed to by the province and Metrolinx. Murray said the City of Toronto has the authority to build new transit projects separate from the Master Agreement, and the City of Toronto Act allows them to enact new revenue tools to pay for whatever projects they desire. “Toronto has invested in subways and transit before and nothing in the The Big Move stops them from building anything,” he said. “If the city wants to bring other projects and proposals

it wants to pay for, it is quite capable of making those decisions.” Murray also said the Ontario Liberals would continue to support electrifying the Union Pearson Express (UP) air rail link, but insisted it wouldn’t happen until after the 2015 Toronto Pan American Games at the earliest. While mentioning 2017 as a potential target date for completion, he said “clean” diesel trains ordered by Metrolinx will run along what will be the city’s first express rapid transit connection between Pearson airport and Union Station when UP starts operating in time for the Pan Am Games. “We have to have the UP service in place for the Pan Am Games, which was part of our commitment,” he said. “It is simply not possible to electrify with enough reliability by 2015.”

Catholic trustees to debate Gay-Straight Alliance club ban CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s Catholic trustees are set to debate a motion calling for the ban of GayStraight Alliance (GSA) clubs this week. The motion, submitted by Trustee Garry Tanuan (Scarborough) and seconded by John Del Grande (Scarborough/North York), challenges Bill 13, The Accepting Schools Act, a piece of provincial legislation passed last June that states “neither the board nor the principal shall refuse to allow a pupil to use the name gay-straight alliance or a similar name for an organization.” In his motion, which is set to come before the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s (TCDSB) monthly meeting this evening, Tanuan argues that by enforcing Bill 13, “the provincial government is breaking the law by violating section

93 of the Constitution, which enshrines the denominational rights of Catholic schools.” “Gay-Straight Alliance clubs promote a positive view of homosexual activity, which undermines Catholic teaching on chastity and marriage,” Tanuan’s motion states. “The church’s solution to bullying is being ignored and church teaching is being undermined by these clubs.” In an email statement to The North York Mirror, Education Minister Liz Sandals said it is her expectation all school boards in the province comply with the Accepting Schools Act, including the support of GSA clubs in any school where a student requests one. “It is our responsibility to help ensure all students feel safe and welcomed at school. That’s why the Act states that neither the board nor the principal can refuse to allow students to have a gay-straight alliance or a similarly named

club,” she said. “Catholic school boards and stakeholders have demonstrated leadership and support in providing safe, positive and inclusive environments for all students. I know that Catholic values of acceptance and love make them natural allies in the fight against bullying. I hope the board will continue to foster an accepting environment for all students.” In place of GSAs, Tanuan is renewing calls for the creation of Respecting Differences clubs, which TCDSB trustees endorsed as the board’s “antibullying solution” at a special board meeting March 7, 2012. Respecting Differences is a club template proposed by the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association in consultation with Catholic bishops. The TCDSB’s monthly meeting takes place tonight at the Catholic Education Centre, 80 Sheppard Ave. E., at 8 p.m.

Council rejects proposal for Toronto casino DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com An expansion of casino gambling anywhere in Toronto is no longer in the cards, after council voted to reject both a downtown casino and expansion of the Woodbine Racetrack into a full-blown casino in north Etobicoke. Council made the decision after a relatively swift debate at a special meeting Tuesday, May 21. Mayor Rob Ford had attempted to cancel the meeting late last week, declaring a downtown casino dead, but 24 councillors pushed to hold the meeting anyway, to settle the matter. At issue for both Ford and opponents of the casino was the amount of the provincial hosting fee. Ford and casino supporters had said that Toronto needed a minimum of $100 million annually in hosting fees to host a major casino. But the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation only offered a total of $65 million to $70 million for a downtown casino. Ford moved a motion that would cancel the downtown casino, but keep

the ball rolling on letting the province establish a second casino at the Woodbine Racetrack. He rested the blame for the failure of the downtown casino on the shoulders of Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. “One year ago the government of Ontario asked Toronto to host a new casino in this great city,” he said. “Since then Toronto has spent a year grappling with the issues. We carried the load and did a lot of the hard work. It now appears that Premier Wynne has chosen a different direction.” He continued, “I will not support a casino that is not in the best interest of Toronto. Hosting a casino in Toronto that does little to address Toronto’s needs and makes the provincial government richer is not in the interests of Torontonians.” Council rejected Ford’s motion, with a vote of 13-31, instead supporting Trinity-Spadina Councillor Mike Layton’s motions that would reject a new casino downtown, and oppose gaming expansion in the C2 zone where the Woodbine Racetrack is located. That last vote carried by a narrower margin: 24-20. Nick Eaves, president and CEO of Woodbine Entertainment, said the vote was disappointing. Woodbine faces a tough

time, he said, if the province locates its casino outside Toronto in Markham or Vaughan. That would create a competition that the racetrack couldn’t necessarily meet without its own tables and slot machines. “We had over 200 people here showing their support,” said Evaves. “We sent 600 letters, there’s a petition signed. I feel most badly for those people whose jobs depend on Woodbine’s racetrack.” Layton, however, pointed out that council’s rejection of gambling was a matter of principle, and noted that Woodbine would be able to maintain its existing operations. “The motion put forward reflects that this wasn’t just about a hosting fee, this was about the impact on the citizens of Toronto,” he said. “We don’t want the province to put forward a policy that encourages more people to become addicted to gambling.”

Lots to reflect on in ‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’

n Robert Anderson’s play You Know I Can’t Hear You When the Water’s Running, a writer pitches a producer on including small human moments in their upcoming play, moments that the audience will take delight in identifying with their own lives. He calls it “the shock of recognition.” That phrase best sums up much of the appeal of the long-running off-Broadway show I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. This musical revue enjoyed a 12-year run in New York and has gone on to be presented all over the world. Angelwalk Theatre, joining forces with the Koogle Theatre Company of Burlington, is reviving this popular show at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. It remains a crowdpleasing delight thanks to the four vibrant performers who take us on a tour through the trials and tribulations of dating,

mark andrew lawrence front row centre marriage, raising a family and growing older. Much of the credit for the success of this production rests with director Evan Tsitsias, who keeps the staging brisk, simple and uncluttered. A few chairs and a table are all that is needed to establish the setting for each number. Early on, Leslie Kay and Alison O’Neill present their lament about a Single Man Drought, winning laughter and applause. Both ladies have strong voices that blend nicely without overshadowing each other. Kay has delicious way of throwing us a knowing look as she delivers some of the more acerbic lines, while O’Neill finds subtle ways to explore the touching truths that thread through most of the songs. Opposite them, Dean

a sweet voice and plays many scenes with a dopey innocence. Gray is a more traditional leading man type and the contrast between the two severs the subtext very effectively. That subtext is greatly supported by the tender violin of Tamara Hrycak supplying the romantic counterpoint to Evan Tsitsias’ driving keyboard. It’s a small “orchestra” but even so provides a rich range of musical colours to accompany the performers. Most of all, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is light-hearted fun. The best example of this is a family auto trip in the second half called “On the Highway of Love,” which is loaded with simple truths that will have many viewers thinking, “Hey, that’s just like us.” Robert Anderson was right: nothing pleases an audience more than seeing their own lives reflected
