Sar Levy: ‘his vibrant spirit will always be remembered’ LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Although Sar Levy struggled with health challenges from the moment he was born, his smile and spirit could light up a room. Sadly, the North York man died last Friday at the age of 27. A funeral was held Sunday, at Steeles Memorial Chapel. Sar had been in hospital since February with advancing liver damage brought on by cystic fibrosis. Over the past several weeks, his family had unsuccessfully searched for a live liver donor after they were ruled out as donors. In a live liver donation, part of the donor’s liver is transplanted into the recipient. Unlike other organs,
the liver can grow back to its normal size. Sar’s family could not be reached for comment this week but tributes posted on Steeles Memorial Chapel’s website spoke to how much he was loved and admired. “Sar is gone much too young. His legacy, however, is one of strength, determination, joy in life, and love of family and friends. His vibrant spirit will always be remembered,” one message said. “My deepest condolences on the loss of Sar, a determined young man with a great sense of humour and a charming smile. He was a very special person,” a second said. “We are so sad to hear of Sar’s passing. The world will be less bright now,” another

Police and Toronto Animal Services continue to search for the suspect or suspects who abused a dog so badly it had to be euthanized. “We have really not identified who did this to the dog, unfortunately,” animal services program manager Mary Lou Leiher told The Mirror yesterday afternoon. “We did get one tip but it was a dead end.” Officials are discussing strategies to keep the case in the public eye in hopes of catching whoever is responsible for the cruelty inflicted on the young, male, black Labrador mix found last Friday on a residential property near Jane Street and Finch Avenue. A resident found the dog with an elastic band around its muzzle, which had caused severe swelling, and an injured ear. The resident sought treatment for the dog at a clinic. Tests revealed it had multiple broken ribs and burns, possibly chemical in nature, to its head, ears, feet and approximately 30 per cent of its body. The dog was taken to animal services’ north clinic, where it was treated with antibiotics and pain medication. Sadly, it was determined the injuries were too severe and the dog was euthanized. Toronto Animal Services has reported the case to police and the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA).

Brotherly love fuels the search for live liver donor LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com

orth York twins Gavriel and Sar Levy came into the world together, their lives dramatically different but always entwined. Born 12 weeks prematurely and each weighing about two pounds of butter, Gavriel soon thrived while Sar has struggled with severe health problems including cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, a rare form of meningitis, diabetes, massive seizures and burst veins in his esophagus. Through it all, Gavriel has been by his brother’s side. So, when Sar was admitted to hospital in February with advancing liver damage brought on by cystic fibrosis, Gavriel eagerly offered to donate part of his liver to his brother. Unlike other organs, a severed liver in both the donor and the recipient grows back to normal size. Unfortunately, Gavriel was ruled out as a donor because he wasn’t an anatomical match, while their parents were disqualified for health reasons. Now, Gavriel and his parents are reaching out to the community to find a live liver donor for Sar, who is also on Ontario’s waiting list for a liver from a deceased donor. “In the past five years, his condition has worsened,” said Gavriel, who along with Sar is 27 years old. “Now, we’re at the point, I don’t want to say any day, but any time soon, he could be in liver failure. The doctors say within a week (of that happening), he could perish.”
Twin seeks a ‘special person’ to help save the life of his brother, whose liver has been damaged by cystic fibrosis Because there isn’t any other family who can donate, their only hope is finding a live donor from the community, said Gavriel, who lives with Sar and their parents in the area of Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue. “We’re hoping some special person out there will come forward and save my brother’s life,” he said. “He’s hanging in, that’s the best way to phrase it. He’s a fighter. We’ve had some real health scares. By some miracle, his will, his drive, he continues to find a way.” Although Sar can’s speak (he uses a communication board and pictures) and he can’t walk (he had two operations as a child that allowed him to walk but he lost the ability as he grew) he has so much to live for, Gavriel said. Sar is a fighter who is active and sociable. He wakes up happy every morning. He loves watching
television shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy because he enjoys seeing people’s happiness when they win. Before he was admitted to hospital, he was thrilled to attend a day program for adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. “He is a past alumni of Zareinu Educational Centre and also attended Park Lane (Public) School where he was the recipient of the principal’s award for student leadership,” Gavriel said. Sar has attended a summer camp in Catskills N.Y. for the past 12 years and is an enthusiastic participant in events run by Yachad Canada, an organization that envelopes people with disabilities into the Jewish community. He loves horseback riding and attended a program through the Community Association for Riding for the Disabled (CARD) for eight years. He adores music, swimming, outdoor activities and “is a keen lover of food,” Gavriel said. “He really loves life and little things. You just give him family and food and all that and he is happy.” Gavriel said it hurts him terribly to see Sar so ill, adding the brothers go through his health struggles together as a team. “I’m very appreciative of my health and I try to give him everything I have so we’re doing it together. I look at us like a package,” he said. “Hopefully, somebody touched by our story will want to save Sar’s life.”

Sar Levy suffers from multiple disabilities that have caused him to develop cirrhosis of the liver, necessitating a transplant. Gavriel Levy, Sar’s brother, and his family have mounted a campaign to find a living donor for the procedure.

Civic leadership is a critical issue Toronto remains a city with strengths and advantages that others around the world can only emulate. However, the lack of true political vision has disrupted serious progress on key issues such as economic and transit development. Political culture has been fractious and detrimental to building trust in leadership for the city moving forward. All of this means civic leadership has become a key issue in Monday’s municipal election. We had a record number of advance poll votes cast this year. The 161,147 votes cast is far more than ever before at advace polls. We hope that means residents take this election seriously and have taken the time to seriously question candidate platforms. Here are key issues a voter needs to consider: Leadership: Thankfully, there has been no major preelection alignment between mayoral and council candidates. We need council members who openly fight for the needs and desires of their individual ward – and are not expected to blindly fall into line with mayoral direction. This city needs a leader who can work with council members from the most liberal to the most conservative. We need a mayor who can lead a council that works together – and leaves the cheap shots and uncalled-for language and accusations behind. We need a mayor who speaks in facts – and can competently back up their view. That mayor must expect the same from council members. A mayor must work aggressively and respectfully with provincial and federal governments. A mayor must build a profile on an international level and be respected as an ambassador on behalf of every resident. Transit: It would be hard to find two Torontonians who believe there is a focused plan for our transit future. Confusion, hostility and easily debunked transit plans have ruled four years of discussion. Yet, congestion increases. Transit builds take decades to complete. Meanwhile, the quality of life in Toronto erodes with no clear direction. Economic development: As do most major cities, Toronto suffers from unacceptable unemployment rates and is lacking in opportunity for the socially disadvantaged. We face stiff competition all the time from other lesser communities who woo industrial and retailer developers. If asked what issues were priorities of this past council, would economic development even rise to the surface? Toronto needs a new, unified vision for the future and fast. We believe John Tory is the only candidate who can deliver the unity, the vision and the results the city needs. That said, it’s you who does the voting. Please take the time to study the platform of your mayoral and council candidates. Consider the past four years simply lessons learned, and choose wisely on Monday. For more information on the Toronto election, including a look at our endorsements for some key wards in the city, visit our election website at www.insidetoronto. com/2014torontovotes

column
See you at the polling station on election day
I
’m ready for the election. I mean, really, really, really ready. It seems like the campaign has gone on forever. But I have to admit, I do have one major concern before I cast my ballot next Monday. It’s the same anxiety I have every time I go to vote, too. It’s not the wondering if I qualify part. I know I do. I’m still a Canadian citizen, through and through. Nor do I worry about the age requirement. I’m at least 18 years old. I never get tired of telling people that I’m over 18. I’m a resident of the City of Toronto as well. Yet another biggie in the qualification department. Though I barely recognize the city anymore through all the traffic. But that’s a column for another day. That’s actually a lot of columns for a lot of other days. But back to the matter at hand, the column for this day, my worrying as the big day approaches. It’s not the wondering
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY if I’m eligible part that makes me nervous either. I’ve got the official Voter Information Card that automatically ensures I am an eligible elector. Hey, wait a minute: eligible elector. Does that sounds like a new mega hit reality show, or what? I can just see hear the TV announcer now: “Coming up next, right after the hockey game, Canada’s Sexiest Eligible Elector. Who will be voted out of the booth this week? Sorry. I got sidetracked dreaming of winning an Emmy. Where was I again? Oh yeah, the election. It’s not the actual voting part I’m worried about, either. I’ve got that down pat after all these years. Although I do have to admit, the process still seems rather old-fashioned with all the
technological wizardry at our disposal. I’m also not worried abut trying to figure out where my polling station is located. I don’t have to take out a GPS or go to Google maps for help. It’s just around the corner. A veritable hop, skip, jump and sprained ankle away. Which reminds me, I’d better stick to walking there this year. And no, it’s not the picking of the candidates either that makes me uneasy as I go to vote. I make up my mind who I’m voting for long before I go in. You have no choice but to do that. With the seemingly endless list of candidates’ names on the ballots you have to know in advance or you’d never get through them all. Nope, it’s the proving who I am part that concerns me. When I get to the desk in the polling station, somebody whom I’ve never met and who has never met me asks for some identification to prove I actually am me. The only photo I can
provide is on my driver’s license, which is curious, because it’s a picture that even I don’t recognize. Not that it matters, because it doesn’t say you need a picture with your ID. All you need in addition to your Voter Information Card is identification showing your name and qualifying Toronto address such as a cancelled personalized cheque, income tax assessment notice or an insurance policy, for example. But even though I’m apprehensive, I’ll be there Monday. Flashing said driver’s license, complete with photo, which, incidentally, looks back at me just as quizzically as I look at it. Good thing the unfamiliar guy in the picture is not running the polling station. If he were in charge, I’d never get in. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. the north york mirror examines a local issue
our exclusive look
local author rona Arato based ‘the last train’ on her husband’s liberation from the nazis
Holocaust story related through children’s book FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com
‘W
hat are we going to do with all these
people?” That question was wondered out loud by First Lieutenant Frank Towers and soldiers George Gross and Carrol Walsh, who happened on a train in Farsleben, Germany on April 13, 1945 and forced it to stop. When the doors opened, 2,500 Jews held captive by Nazis spilled out onto the hillside. The young American soldiers had heard talk of Jewish people sent to concentration camps under Adolf Hitler’s rule, but this was the first time they had seen proof. And by stopping the train, they unknowingly liberated thousands – and captured the moment on film, thanks to a camera the now-deceased Gross carried. One of the train’s passengers was a young boy named Paul Auslander. The six-year-old happily ate up the Tootsie Rolls the soldiers gave him and, decades later when he had a chance to once again come face to face with one
of them, never forgot their kindness. Young Paul’s life, from the time Nazis occupied his hometown of Karcag, Hungary, in April 1944, to his liberation in November 1945, is chronicled in his wife Rona Arato’s book, The Last Train: A Holocaust Story. His family changed their last name from Auslander to Arato in 1952 from a German to a Hungarian one after the war due to pressure from the Sovietcontrolled communist government in Hungary because anyone holding a public position, such as teacher like Paul’s father, had to have a Hungarian last name. Released in 2013, the 144-page children’s book published by Owlkids Books tells the story of how one family, made up of a mother, two sons and other relatives, were forced from their home by the Nazis to a ghetto, then to Strasshof Concentration Camp, then to an Austrian farm work camp, back to Strasshof, then to the Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp, to being stranded with thousands of other Jews on a freight train in Farsleben, where they finally tasted

freedom when they were liberated by the 30th Division of the US 9th Army. In the years that followed, Rona’s husband didn’t talk much of the Holocaust or his own experiences during that time, including with his own children. survivors’ histories In an effort to help understand what her husband went through, Rona became an interviewer for the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation in 1995, and convinced Paul to be interviewed. That’s how their three children ended up learning his story. His past would be brought to light once again when Arato got an email from one of their children about an article focusing on the train from which young Paul and his family were liberated. A high school teacher from upstate New York had interviewed Walsh for a class project on the Holocaust when the former soldier mentioned the train. The teacher, Matt Rozell, then held a symposium with the soldiers and train survivors in 2009, which
Rona and her husband attended. It was then Paul shared his story with the high school students in attendance, but not before embracing Walsh, who became a judge and has since passed away, thanking him for saving his life more than 60 years earlier. Though Paul was quiet when it came to talking about the Holocaust with people, he was happy letting his wife tell his story through The Last Train, Rona said. “He was very proud (of the book),” she said recently from her Bayview and Steeles avenues apartment building. Though he lived to see the book published, Paul died in July 2013 from esophageal cancer. The Last Train is based on actual events, but Rona imagined most of the dialogue, she said. And some of those events one might wish were imagined: Jews standing in the freezing cold for hours, making sure not to move for fear of getting shot, to only being fed watery soup of turnips and dirty potato peels for their daily meal, and, perhaps most shocking, the shooting death of a
young boy at the hands of a Bergen Belsen Nazi. The child’s crime? Telling the guard it was his birthday. When Paul’s train was liberated, it had been travelling for four days. There was no food or water and sanitary conditions were horrendous. It was later believed the train was heading into the forest, and all passengers on board were to die, when the American soldiers happened upon it. Nazi atrocities “The Germans dropped their guns and ran off,” Rona said. “The soldiers said they had heard stories of Nazi atrocities but thought it was propaganda. I called the book The Last Train because it was the last train Paul’s family was on (during the war).” Perhaps the most emotional part of The Last Train comes towards the end, when Paul is reunited with his father, Ignaz, who was in a forced labour camp in Russia when his family was initially forced from their home. Paul worried he wouldn’t recognize his dad after being apart for so long, but those fears were quickly
quelled when they set eyes on each other. “I love the scene where they reunite,” Rona said. Paul’s mother, Lenke, became ill with typhoid fever in the book, for which she never fully recovered. She died in 1951 when Paul was 13. As Paul got older, he had dreams of moving to the United States so he could design cars in Detroit. His love of design started when an uncle taught him how to whittle while they were in one of the concentration camps. But the United States was tough to get into, and Canada welcomed him. He graduated from the Art Centre College of Design in California and worked for Mattell Toys before opening Arato Designs in Toronto. He and Rona married in 1968. Rona, who has published several books for Owlkids, has told her husband’s story in presentations to both children and adults, as she feels both groups can benefit. “It’s not just for Jewish audiences, it’s a universal story,” she said.

Teen driving: Take the responsible road While an RBC Insurance survey1 shows that 9 in 10 parents rate their teens as fairly good drivers, many teenagers still fall prey to common driving misconceptions. “Being a teenage driver isn’t easy. You’re developing a new skill and learning the rules of the road, and because of this, are more likely to fall victim to myths,” explains Natalie Dupuis, Senior Product Manager, Auto, RBC Insurance. “The consequences of making a mistake on the road can have serious ramifications, including the impact to your pocketbook, with teens in an accident seeing substantial increases in premiums upwards of 50%. However, knowing what types of mistakes you’re most likely to commit can help teens make the right driving decisions.” While a number of these activities are already illegal, still many dangerous driving misconceptions persist. To help set the record straight, RBC Insurance debunks the three most common driving misconceptions among teens: Myth: “I can safely text or talk on my phone while driving.” Fact: Cell phones are a significant visual and cognitive distraction for drivers, with average “eyes off the road” times that increase the risk of collision considerably. Drivers engaged in text messaging on a cell phone are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash or near crash event than non-distracted drivers.2 Myth: “I’ve only had one drink so I’m fine to drive.” Fact: Any amount of alcohol impairs driving and increases the risk of collision. Even one drink can cloud your thinking, dim your vision and slow your reflexes.

Alcohol also affects your attention span, alertness and coordination. A driver with a blood alcohol content of 0.10% is 50 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than a driver with no blood alcohol content.3 Myth: “Driving under the influence of cannabis is not as bad as driving under the influence of alcohol.” Fact: Your driving ability can be impaired by pot just as much as it can be impaired by alcohol, as both can impact your ability to concentrate and lower your reaction time. In fact, drivers between 16 and 24 years old are equally split between drinking-driver fatalities (27.6%) and drug-positive driver fatalities (26.9%).4 To learn more, visit www.rbcinsurance.com/ insuranceneeds/safety-tips-for-teenage-drivers.html 2012 RBC Parent and Teen Driving Study. finds fault with BUS bike racks wMinistry A recent Ontario Ministry of Labour ruling means cyclists for the time being cannot make use of the bike racks found on most TTC buses. The Ministry ordered the TTC to lock the bike racks found on the front of its Orion VII and Nova articulated buses – which make up the majority of the fleet – because of sight line concerns when the racks are full. Until the issue is resolved, the TTC will allow bikes on board its buses, if there’s enough room.

The return of streetcar service to Queen’s Quay last week did not come without some technical issues. Following the resumption of both the 509 Harbourfront and 510 Spadina services Sunday, Oct. 12 on the street’s newly built transit rightof-way, riders complained of excessive wait times and vehicle bunching, which
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT the TTC blamed on an interim signaling system put in place by Waterfront Toronto. Waterfront Toronto, which is co-ordinating a wholesale renovation of Queen’s Quay including the installation of a modern set of transitpriority signals, promised to tweak the system by the end of the week to help the streetcars run smoother. LEAVES SUSPEND STREETCAR SERVICE wLOOSE In the wake of flooding last week, the city is urging residents to do a better job ensuring loose piles of leaves don’t get onto the streets. Improper disposal of leave and debris was identified as a key culprit for flooding on St. Clair Avenue West after a freak thunderstorm last Thursday evening that temporarily suspended streetcar service.
In a statement, the city’s head of transportation services Stephen Buckley said loose leaves and other yard waste can create dangerous conditions and urged residents to dispose of them properly so they don’t get onto sidewalks and roads. GIVE GO BUS FEEDBACK wPASSENGERS
GO bus passengers have the opportunity to provide feedback on the quality of their rides and maybe win a travel voucher in the process. Candidates dispute best solution for Finch West transit SUBWAYS, LIGHT RAIL, RAPID-EXPRESS BUSES PRESENTED AS OPTIONS DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The subway dreamers along Finch Avenue West have had a lot of work to do over the past four years. By the end of the David Miller years in 2010, hopes were effectively dashed: Transit City, the light rail plan that put surface rail along avenues across the city, was set to lay down LRT tracks along Finch from the new Finch West subway station at Keele Street west to Humber College. Within hours of taking office in 2010, Mayor Rob Ford killed that plan, famously declaring Transit City (and therefore the Finch West LRT) “dead.” But he offered no subway to replace it . It took not two years for the Sheppard subway plan to collapse and a little longer for the other Scarborough subway to emerge, extending the Bloor-Danforth line eastward. Tunnelling westward on Finch, council offered little hope, undoing the mayor’s unilateral obituary for light rail and giving its blessing to the continuation of work on the Finch West light rail line. In 2014, hope for the revival of the Finch West subway line is faint, but present nonetheless. Mayoral candidate front-runner John Tory has made it clear he’ll be supporting the Finch light rail line, as has trailing candidate Olivia Chow. But city councillor Doug Ford, polling in second place for the mayor’s seat, is a different story: he has promised to enact his ailing brother Rob Ford’s transit plan – which is to say, build 32 kilometres of subways for $9 billion, using money raised by a variety of means other than property taxes. The prospect has two of three incumbent city councillors along the line salivating. “I’m more convinced than ever that this is the direction we need to go,” said Vince Crisanti, who is defending his Ward 1 (Etobicoke North) seat on Toronto council in the Oct. 27 election. “The main issue is the commute time – door to door this is the No. 1 issue,” he said. Crisanti, along with neighbouring Ward 7 (York West) Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, maintains the northwest of the city has been neglected. Mammoliti has been pushing for subways in the west end since before his abortive 2010 mayoral bid, when he proposed subways not only on Finch but also on Jane Street. He has also been a staunch opponent of the $1.2-billion Finch LRT currently being designed by Metrolinx.
“It’s very clear to me that Ward 7 doesn’t want a train going down the middle of the road,” said Mammoliti. “It doesn’t want a St. Clair streetcar atmosphere on the largest industrial pocket in the city that uses Finch Avenue. Tractor trailers won’t be able to make three-point turns or U-turns...What the province is proposing will kill Finch Avenue.” Mammoliti is proposing the LRT be scrapped, and Metrolinx instead construct a temporary busway, also down the middle of Finch, in a manner yet to be devised so as not to interfere with truck traffic. The plan is not supported by Metrolinx’s environmental assessment of the LRT line. Bus rapid transit, according to the study, would not
provide sufficient carrying capacity and would require bypass lanes to keep the same efficiency. It would also not encourage development to the same extent that a light rail line would, and while capital costs are lower, it would cost more once the line reaches its capacity. And as to ridership: according to the study, by 2031 demand will be in the range of 2,300 to 2,800 persons per hour. That’s more than a bus rapid transit line can handle, and a subway isn’t justified until ridership approaches the range of 10,000 people per hour. Others along the route seem to have reconciled, for now, the reality
that light rail will probably be coming to Finch Avenue West. The Emery Village Business Improvement Area board has been negotiating with Metrolinx since Transit City was announced, about implementation issues regarding the light rail line. Emery Village project manager Al Ruggero said the concern remains traffic issues along Finch, which is used for heavy trucking access to Hwy. 400. The BIA hired traffic consultant, Cole Engineering to look at ways to resolve the issue. The bottom line is that a portion of the surface line, particularly as it approaches bottlenecks underneath Hwy. 400 and a Canadian Pacific railway bridge, ought to be buried.
Ward 7 candidate Nick DiNizio is on board with a partially buried light rail line. “Let’s be honest, subways are the way to go, but it’s cost prohibitive now,” he said. “My goal is now that they’ve decided to put an LRT coming through, I would rather see it buried because of the heavy trucks we have... it’s going to be a dog’s breakfast having it above ground.” The debate over subways versus buses versus LRT perplexes transit watchers like blogger Steve Munro. “There are some things to be said about having subways in some locations, but so much of this is a combination of an old-time revival meeting and also the notion that... ‘we are the downtrodden and if only we had subways our lives will be so much better.’ And I have a real problem with that.”
You’re their world. And that’s worth protecting.

Chow the choice for this columnist It is something of a cliché to say a municipal election marks a cross-roads for a city. But after four years of the Ford family’s wild reign at Toronto City Hall, any kind of road seems a relief. Based on the polls, a small majority of voters believes themselves to have found that road in the form of John Tory. Fiscally conservative, gracious of manner and civically engaged, the former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader, business executive and talk show host has presented himself as an agreeable antidote to the melodrama at City Hall. Tory would follow the rules. He would maintain cordial relationships on council and with other levels of government. His history of volunteer work on matters of social inclusion make it clear he could be expected to govern from a fiscally conservative centre. Elements of his platform, however, make him maddeningly difficult to
david nickle the city endorse. Key among these is the $8-billion (or so) SmartTrack surface rail plan that has been criticized for its vague and risky tax increment financing plan. With that said, SmartTrack is an improvement on the plan put forward first by Mayor Rob Ford and then his brother Doug, to pursue an unsupportable plan to build 32 kilometres of subway and kill the remaining planned light rail lines. Which brings us to Olivia Chow. For those voting strategically, third-place Chow seems a terrible bet. Yet she offers the most fiscally conservative and civically constructive platform in the race. Chow is promising tax increases marginally higher than Tory’s, and a land transfer tax premium for $2-million-plus real estate transactions. But she would

push to return the costly Scarborough subway to its provincially funded light rail predecessor, and put the billion dollars in tax revenue slated for the subway toward a necessary but unfunded downtown relief line. Some aspects of Chow’s platform might not come off as planned – notably, her plans to increase bus service and build affordable housing. But these failures would leave Toronto in a status quo, not in ruinous debt. Chow may have proven to be an inexpert campaigner and an often tenuous debater. But on Oct. 27, the debating and campaigning is over for nearly four years. And Chow’s work as a city councillor and Member of Parliament has demonstrated an ability to lead allies and parlay with opponents that Toronto’s next mayor will need in spades. By those measures, Chow is the best choice on Oct. 27.

Local MPs out of harm’s way in wake of shootings >>>from page 1 one of two shootings – one at the National War Memorial – that broke out in Ottawa around 10 a.m. A soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial, who was a member of the Hamilton Argylls of Canada – 91st Canadian Highlanders, died. An armed gunman was inside Centre Block as MPs gathered for their weekly caucus meeting. “We know little about what’s happening,” Sullivan said around 2:30 p.m. yesterday. “We’re in a safe room now. Until we were moved to the safe room, we were in a room with windows. It was pretty tense. I’ve never been so terrified in my life.” Though Sullivan said security favoured freely allowing visitors to roam Parliament Hill, that stance might have to be revisited. “Our security forces are first rate,” he said. “I can’t say enough good things. news is, a soldier was shot and has not made it. I’m very sad about that.” Greg McClinchey, chief of staff for York West MP Judy Sgro, said he’s spoken with her and she’s “safe, sound and out of harm’s way.” Sgro was in caucus at the time of the Parliament Hill shootings for the weekly caucus meeting, he said, adding he got in touch with her immediately. An employee at Don Valley East MP Joe Daniel’s Ottawa office said Daniel is fine and still in lockdown as of The Mirror’s deadline. imaging, pharmacology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology and geriatrics, the hospital said in a statement released last Thursday. The unprecedented approach will allow the multi-disciplinary team to accelerate research and slow the progress of brain disorders, it said. “We are the only place in Canada where world-class researchers and clinicians
in all three of the most common brain disorders – dementia, stroke, as well as depression and anxiety – work closely together to transform care,” Dr. Anthony Levitt, Chief of Sunnybrook’s Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program, said. “We do this because the three are inter-related. People with any one of these conditions are more
likely to suffer from one of the others. What we learn about one will help us with all. Bringing this work together is an absolutely critical next step in understanding the causes and developing new treatments for these brain conditions.” The $20 million donation is almost half the $50 million needed for the centre.
The centre will be housed in Sunnybrook’s existing F wing, which will be renovated, and a new building of the same size alongside it, the hospital said. Garry Hurvitz said his family is pleased to support the centre. “I am extraordinarily proud to have my family’s name associated with a
