It’s great that we’re able to provide this opportunity for our students.” Students like Emily Tran, 15, and Enmin Zhu, 16, seemed to enjoy their time on the ice over the past year. “It’s my first time trying to play ice hockey,” Enmin said. “It’s good.” Emily agreed. “It’s exciting,” she said, adding it’s a nice fun break from being in class. Mascalidis planned to continue the program so more kids can experience hockey, which he himself has played since he was four years old. “We’re definitely going to keep it going,” he said. “They appreciate everything you do for them and they take care of each other. It’s so nice to see.”

CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com When students from Drewry Secondary School hit the ice Friday to play hockey, they showed how much they’ve improved since the beginning of the school year. “Most of the kids have never put on skates before,” said Dan Mascalidis, a teacher at Drewry Secondary, who helped start the program to give students the opportunity to learn and play Canada’s pastime. It’s an opportunity many of the grades 9 to 12 students, attending the small special needs school near Yonge Street and Cummer Avenue,

olunteer recognition: it’s important, but doesn’t need to be expensive. As we’re in the midst of National Volunteer Week, many organizations across the country that rely on volunteer efforts are busy acknowledging those efforts. And for good reason. According to Statistics Canada, 12.7 million Canadians volunteered for nearly two billion hours in 2013. That’s a lot of work being put into making our communities stronger. Though it may seem counterintuitive – as volunteering tends to be a selfless act – recognition is nevertheless important. According to Volunteer Canada, studies show that volunteer retention rates are linked to recognition. So what are organizations and causes to do? Resources are limited. Yet the time and expertise of volunteers are critical cogs to getting jobs done. One recent study, published by Volunteer Canada, suggests there’s reason for optiour view mism. The study entailed a pair of online surveys – one for volunteers Recognition and another for non-profit organiThere were 379 responses. of service zations. According to the organizaa win-win tion’s 2013 National Volunteer Recognition Study, the ways people want to be recognized tend to be the most cost-effective ones, such as “being thanked on an ongoing, informal basis.” Least-preferred methods included items like banquets and formal gatherings. “Few volunteers want to be thanked in public ways,” states the Key Findings section. “But they do want to know the impact of their contribution.” So here’s a challenge: if you’re an organization, take this week as an opportunity to review your recognition practices and get to know your volunteers a little better. Engaging your volunteer base may spark conversations and ideas that can be of mutual benefit. If you’re a volunteer, don’t be afraid to ask how your efforts are making a difference. Finally, if you’re not already a volunteer in some capacity, consider becoming one. The average contribution in Canada ranges from two to four hours per week, according to Statistics Canada. It may not be about the recognition, but the benefits of meeting people, learning a skill and contributing to your community (a key point in the Volunteer Canada survey). If you’re looking for ideas, Volunteer Toronto lists several opportunities on its website: www.volunteertoronto.ca

Hockey draft lottery is McMust-see viewing

W

hile 16 NHL teams battle it out for the Stanley Cup, the consolation trophy for the 14 clubs that didn’t qualify is nothing to sneeze at: the chance of getting the No. 1 draft pick overall, expected to be junior phenom Connor McDavid. The Newmarket native plays for the Ontario Hockey League’s Erie Otters and is considered to be a budding superstar in waiting, the kind of player a team can build a franchise around. A league, too, for that matter. You can’t take your eyes off McDavid when he’s on the ice. He helped lead Canada to victory at the world junior tournament this year and that was after recovering from a broken hand and not having played for more than a month. He didn’t skip a beat after the tourney either, putting together another big season at Erie. He’s the

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY current points leader in the OHL payoffs including a dazzling five-goal game last week against the mighty London Knights. Small wonder he’s being spoken of in the same breath as the likes of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Sidney Crosby and the New York Islanders’ John Tavares, two standouts who were under the same glare as youngsters and for whom the same big things in the NHL were also predicted. While the actual draft isn’t until the end of June after the Stanley Cup has been handed out, the much anticipated draft lottery, which will determine the picking order, will be aired just prior to Saturday night’s Penguins/Rangers game. Each of the 14 non-playoff teams is eligible to win

the lottery. Their chances are weighted in reverse order of their position in the standings. The percentages range from 20 per cent for the last place club, Buffalo, to one per cent for Boston, the team 14th from the bottom. Toronto, fourth from the cellar, has a 9.5 per cent possibility. Everybody keeps asking me who I think will end up with McDavid, but given that it’s a lottery, I don’t have a clue. However, I think I can guess what the newspaper headlines will be the next day in the 14 cities hoping to get him. First up, the probable headlines in the losing markets: 14. The McDream Is Over 13. We Just Can’t Catch A McBreak 12. There’s No McJustice 11. As If We Didn’t See That McComing 10. Big McSurpise. McSame Old, McSame Old 9. Oh Well. Nothing

McVentured, Nothing McGained 8. There’s Aways McNext Year 7. C’est La McVie 6. You Can’t McWin ’em All, As They McSay 5. That’s McShowbiz 4. Ah, McRats 3. McSigh. So McNear And Yet So McFar 2. McClose, But No McCigar Lastly, the most likely headline in the city of the team who gets the top pick: 1. How McSweet it is And the icing on the McCake? That’s draft day, when NHL commissioner Gary Bettman asks the team with first overall for its choice. No doubt the lucky GM will beam into the microphone: “Number 97, please, with everything, for here.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. Nurse Lisa Hung, left, Dr. Roderick Purzner, Dr. Jonathan Carr, Dr. Nancy Down and Dr. Fahima Osman perform a radioactive seed localization procedure at North York General Hospital last Thursday.

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Dorothy MacNeill was going for a routine mammogram at Mount Sinai Hospital in February when the doctor noticed a change in the tissue of the left breast. She was told to return to the downtown hospital about a week later for an ultrasound, which confirmed the irregularity. A biopsy was done that same day, and several days later the doctor called with news no one wants to hear: cancer cells were detected. After the news sunk in, MacNeill realized her breast cancer diagnosis came almost 10 years to the day she was diagnosed with colon cancer. Dr. Nancy Down, medical director, integrated care collaborative and division head of general surgery at North York General Hospital (NYGH), had been her colon cancer surgeon, and MacNeill asked her family doctor for a referral to the Leslie Street and Hwy. 401

a radioactive seed can help surgeons pinpoint breast cancer tumours

Location

Location

Location North York General hospital procedure a first in Toronto hospital with the hopes of having Down remove the tumour from her breast. Surgery was scheduled for last Thursday. Shortly before the Bayview

Avenue and York Mills Road resident’s procedure, Down called to ask if MacNeill would be interested in being the hospital’s first patient to undergo radioactive seed

localization. The minimally invasive procedure is done on small tumours in the breast that can be detected by mammograms or breast ultrasound but not by touch. It involves injecting the breast with a “seed” about the size of a caraway seed either the day of surgery or up to a week before to help surgeons pinpoint the exact location of the tumour and remove early-stage breast cancer with the best possible accuracy. The seed gives off just enough radiation to be detected with a handheld Geiger counter in the operating room at the time of the lumpectomy, and is removed along with the tumour; no radioactivity is left behind. Seed localization is an improvement over the widely used technique of wire localization, which can be uncomfortable and must take place the day of surgery, which may add to patient anxiety. The wires may also shift in advance of surgery and pose a small risk of inaccu-

racy during lumpectomy, whereas the seed does not move. “It made sense to me as a patient,” MacNeill said from inside NYGH, clad in a hospital gown about an hour before the surgery. “They know exactly where the tumour is.” The 62-year-old has gotten routine mammograms every two years since age 50, and didn’t think anything was amiss for her February appointment. “I work out, I eat healthy, I’m not someone you might expect to get cancer,” she said, adding her breast cancer is not related to the colon cancer diagnosis a decade ago. “There’s no breast cancer in my family.” MacNeill, who was upbeat when speaking to The Mirror, said she feels good

about radioactive seed localization, as the procedure was thoroughly explained to her during injection the day before surgery. While she once didn’t put much thought into mammograms, the Urban Squash Toronto program director, who is retired from her corporate telecommunications job, now credits them with potentially saving her life. “You do mammograms to find things like this,” she said. Although radioactive seed localization has been performed in trials in the city, MacNeill’s surgery marked the first time the procedure will be a regular part of small breast tumour removal treatment in a Toronto hospital, Down said. “This can be used for other lesions that aren’t necessary cancer,” she said, adding the procedure is strictly for the breast. “Starting ( Thursday), this is the way we will do all localized lumpectomies.”

Toronto 2015 Games are North York woman’s next international experience >>>from page 1 interview process. “It was an amazing experience,” said Yeganegi, who ended up being chosen as one of the thousands of performers during the opening ceremonies. Two years later, in 2014, she took part in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and then recruited to Sochi, Russia that same year for the Winter Olympic Games. More recently, she was a medal and flower bearer at the Canadian National Track Championship in Milton earlier this year. Throughout her journey traveling around the world, Yeganegi also studied sports medicine at York University before going to medical school and studying at Yale University to become a child psychologist. “To be perfectly honest, I don’t know how I fit everything,” said Yeganegi with a laugh. But the experience was worth the time and sacrifice she needed to make to fit everything in her already busy schedule. “It was truly an honour,” she said, reflecting on her whirlwind adventure. “Being involved in the Games in different countries, one of the best things is that you learn so much. And the people you meet around the world is absolutely mind-blowing. I’ve built so many friendships.” Yeganegi’s looking to make even more friends at the Toronto Pan Am Games where she’ll be active in a number of roles including performing in the opening ceremonies, escorting dignitaries and athletes, as well as again 2900 Steeles Ave East fountains, patio sets, being a medal mailboxes & other & Hwy 404 and flower fine products for the Markham, On L3T 4X1 home & garden bearer. 416-961-0915/647-909-3839

opinion to ride transit for a week wpoliticians TTCriders has launched another transit awareness campaign, this time challenging Toronto MPPs to take a ride on the Better Way. So far, only Peter Tabuns and Cheri DiNovo of the NDP and Arthur Potts of the Liberals have taken up the advocacy group’s challenge to commute to and from Queen’s Park for a week solely by TTC to see how cramped conditions are for riders. You can find out how the elected officials fared by visiting www.ttcriders.ca TTCriders is also planning to canvas TTC stations and stops on Monday, April 27 to call for better provincial funding for the transit commission. TO SHUT DOWN WESTON OFFICE wMETROLINX

With infrastructure work along the Georgetown South Corridor winding down, Metrolinx will close its community office in Weston at the end of the week.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT The office at 44 King St. is one of three Metrolinx opened to deal with community concerns related to construction upgrades along the rail corridor, most of which needed to be done before the Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link begins running. Completed projects for Weston included a new tunnel and bridge. As well, the John Street pedestrian bridge is scheduled to open in the summer. The office officially closes Friday. SUBWAY LOOP OFFER WI-FI w‘U’STATIONS

You can now connect to the TTC’s subway Wi-Fi system at every downtown subway station. The transit commission announced last week all 15 stations in the downtown core – comprising the “U” subway loop, as well as Bay and Spadina stations on the Bloor-Danforth line

– now offer access to the TCONNECT service which can be logged on to from the subway platform or station concourse. It will still be a couple of years or so before the entire subway network is hooked up, and there’s no timeline as of yet for getting the service onto the subway cars. GO TRANSIT TO TAG BICYCLES wABANDONED

If you left a bicycle – or even part of one – at a GO Transit station rack over the long term, beware: the regional transit provider is planning to tag and remove it. As part of its spring cleaning drive, GO staff will affix orange tags to the bicycles or the parts of bicycles deemed abandoned. If your ride was tagged improperly, all you have to do is remove the tag and resume riding. GO is planning to remove any tagged bikes by the first week of May. Two options for Gardiner’s future Ah, what a relief! Councillor Jaye Robinson and Mayor John Tory – and with any luck a voting majority of Toronto Council – are going to end the debate over the Gariner Expressway’s future once and for all, and will do so by the summer. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime decision and we need to make sure we get it right,” said Robinson, in her capacity as chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee. Robinson said that at a news conference on Tuesday, made necessary by a bit of reporting by Oliver Moore at The Globe and Mail, about certain leaked details of an environmental assessment report looking at options for the crumbling elevated expressway. By now (as you read this) the report will be out and the first public consultation on its contacts will have occurred. But as I write this, I have only Moore’s word on its content: Robinson and city staff would not confirm the most likely option, a hybrid that reroutes part of the express-

david nickle the city way at ground level, would cost about $900 million. That’s a lot of money, but it would provide a lot of benefit to a lot of people: first and foremost, the developers at First Gulf who are planning a massive redevelopment of the Unilever site. The development would create thousands of jobs, and generate millions of dollars in revenue to be put toward Tory’s SmartTrack plan – the surface rail project that would run right through the First Gulf project. Given that, council really only has two choices on its plate: either tear down the whole highway as earlier suggested, or go with this hybrid model. This will not only help with vehicular congestion, but political congestion, too. For more than a decade, the future of the Gardiner has been a political pinch point for the left and right on council. The

left has, broadly, favoured the simple removal of the elevated highway. That option dovetails with views that it would open up the city’s waterfront to pedestrians. The broadly defined right on council, meanwhile, has put considerable political energy into maintaining the thing on the largely correct theory that right-of-centre voters from the suburbs feel the expressway there is a kind of entitlement, even as every spring and summer it flings pieces of itself onto the hoods of cars travelling below it. These and other engineering conundrums surrounding the Gardiner have been subsumed in an existential fight between left and right on council for the course of the debate. The future of the Gardiner has always been something that could wait. But not anymore. The injection of First Gulf might be what it takes to break the standoff. Here’s hoping.

‘West Side Story’ brings feuding gangs to North York stage When West Side Story exploded on Broadway in the fall of 1957, there was unending praise for its cohesive mix of music, dance and drama. It was the Rent of its day, drawing younger audiences to the Winter Garden Theatre for repeat visits. The songs became well known and, yes, popular. The story of rival street gangs, The Jets and The

mark andrew lawrence front row centre Sharks, staking out their turf still has the power to move audiences when performed with enthusiasm and sincerity. It’s a difficult show for non-professionals to pull off successfully. Truth be told, it’s a difficult show for some professionals to pull off, as the recent misguided

Broadway revival proved. That’s why it is a particular pleasure to report that Curtain Call Players have put together a West Side Story that is beautifully sung, affectingly acted and excitingly danced. The Tony and Maria here are for once portrayed by age-appropriate performers. Michael Donnelly quickly establishes Tony’s romantic yearning with his

rendition of Something’s Coming. Soon he meets his Maria (Lauren Lazar) who joins him in the ageless duet Tonight. As their voices soar we enjoy the magic that this show is so capable of generating. There’s more. Mayla Fiona delivers Anita’s lines with a sharp tongue and joins Kristen Bovin and the other Shark Girls to make America into a lively showstopper. The Jet boys and girls follow with a vigorous dance routine to Cool. Then the Jets and Sharks join forces for a Quintet as everyone prepares for the big rumble. Normally The Rumble ends the first act, but here director Keith O’Connell uses the Quintet as the Act One finale. It’s a fine idea, but slightly muted in execution. Somehow the drive of the music is undercut by static staging and unenthusiastic singing. Once Act Two kicks

details

‘West Side Story’ is playing at Fairview Library Theatre, 35 Fairview Mall Dr., until Saturday, April 18. For tickets, visit www.curtaincallplayers. com or call 416-703-6181. off with The Rumble we are back on solid ground with Jon Alexander’s realistic choreography and O’Connell’s staging blending into another winning sequence. A ballet follows centered on the song Somewhere, superbly performed by soloist Chelsea Lau. Soon after this the Jets, led by Jeff Hookings in the role of Action, parody the bleeding-heart liberals who make excuses for juvenile delinquents in the amusingly staged Gee Officer Krupke. Mayla Fiona returns with a dramatic outburst, A Boy Like That. Lazar as Maria responds with the passionate I Have a Love. This leads into to story’s tragic conclu-

sion. The real strength of this production is O’Connell’s focused story-telling moving briskly from one incident to another. In addition to the performers already mentioned, Glen Burgess gives us a determined Riff and Kyle Fiore makes a strong impression in the underwritten role of Bernardo. The gang members on both sides are especially effective in the athletic prologue and the jivey Dance at the Gym. The Leonard BernsteinStephen Sondheim score is well sung and the lyrics clearly articulated. West Side Story has lost none of its power over the past 58 years. Its relevance grows with each passing day. All it needs is finely tuned production, and that is what we have on stage now. Sarah is 38, a down-to-earth, simple living, country girl & a natural beauty. She has never been married & has no children of her own. She grew up on her parents farm, then moved away & started her own bakery when she was 23. At 29 her mother passed away suddenly, leaving her father by himself & Sarah with a very difficult decision. As much as she loved her bakery, family comes first, so she sold her business & moved back to help her father operate the farm. She is very happy there and it’s expanded with extra employees. Sarah is very hard working & success driven, but she has not had much time to herself to find a serious relationship. Now that her father is retired & she has help on the farm, she has a lot more time to enjoy herself & is hoping to find that special someone to spend her life with. She is looking for a man who likes the country life, is energetic, active & outdoorsy.
