Hard work paying off CNE Rising Star contest for baseball-loving teen attracts North York talent Robert Battista heads to CNE tourney with North York Blues AAA team CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com All kids can learn from Robert Battista’s story of how he got onto the North York Blues AAA team after trying out multiple times. That’s what his coach Steve Kauffman said about the 13 year old who tried out for the team three times and was cut each year. “A lot of kids at that point would have quit and gave up,” Kauffman said. “But he never gave up.” It wasn’t easy, but Robert, who lives near Avenue Road and Lawrence Avenue, persevered as he committed to living a healthier lifestyle, losing nearly 50 pounds by sheer determination and working with a trainer. “I felt amazing because I worked so hard to get to where I am now,” said Robert, who weighed 165 pounds when he was just eight years old. Not only did he make the team this year, Robert plays catcher and bats third, in the heart of the order, where his power at the plate is evident. “He’s, at that age, probably one of the best hitters,” said Kauffman, who’s been coach-

ing at the AAA level for about eight years. “He’s probably the hardest working kid I’ve ever coached.” Robert, in turn, also thanked his coach for helping him achieve success. “He’s an excellent coach,” said Robert, adding Kauffman is a great motivational speaker as well. His mother, Paola, was also “overjoyed” when she heard Robert made the AAA team. “It’s been amazing,” said Paola, who’s seen her son grow to love the game since he started playing when he

was five years old. The North York Blues have had a great season this year and will be playing next in the prestigious, annual Lions – CNE PeeWee Baseball Tournament, which runs from Aug. 21 to Sept. 3 at a temporary location at Coronation Park downtown. This year, 32 teams will compete in the single elimination event. “It’s extremely competitive,” Kauffman said.

More than 100 young performing artists will hit the International Stage at this year’s CNE in the hopes of entertaining audiences and beating out their peers. Among them are six North York youths, who were selected to the CNE’s Rising Star Talent Competition through an online video submission. The contest runs Aug. 21 to Sept. 6, 6:30 to 8 p.m., inside the Enercare Centre (formerly Direct Energy Centre). The junior (ages six to 12) finals are Saturday, Sept. 5 and the youth (13 to 21) finals are Sunday, Sept. 6. Recent York University graduate Sasha Liknaitzky, 20, is returning for a second go-round at the competition after a humbling and learning experience in 2014. The singer-songwriter who performs original tunes with vocals and acoustic guitar did not make it past the preliminary round a year ago, but she knows where she must improve to advance further – stage presence. Contestants are judged on their natural ability, audience appeal, stage presence and the quality of their performance. ‘dress like a star’ Judges told Liknaitzky she did not bring a star’s look to match her performance. “It was an interesting moment of humility that I had,” the Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue area resident said.

Aleksander Uvarichev, left, and Sasha Liznaitzky will take part in the 2015 CNE Rising Star competition.

Competition runs Aug. 21 to Sept. 6 “They gave me the feedback – you’re a star and you need to dress like a star. I just wore a tank-top and jeans,” she said. She understands there’s more to being a performer than just the performance; it requires the look, too, and she intends to bring it this year. “I’m just going to dress the part and when I stand on the stage, I’ll stand straight instead of slouching over, and be the star that they’re asking me to be,” she said. “I think I have the talent, I think I have the skill and I have the song.” Liknaitzky said she intends to perform her original song Uh-Oh, which is about the early stages of a relationship between a boy and girl. Fellow North York singer Aleksander Uvarichev, 12, said he’s excited to hit the stage at the CNE. “I love to be on stage. It’s like my second home,”

said Aleksander, who will be entering Grade 7 at Willowdale Middle School. “I want to try and I want to see if I can move on. I want to make friends and meet people there. I’m pretty excited.” contest newcomer It’s his first attempt at the CNE competition and he signed up after his mom told him about it. Aleksander started singing at home, where he would sing along to music his mom listened to. In 2011, he enrolled at the Star School Academy in North York where he practices vocals, dance and drama. The other North York performers are nine-yearold singer Aviv Cohen, 12-year-old singer Nikki Karimi, and singing duo of Cynthia Marhue, 20, and Brant Garrat, 21. The competition is open to Ontario residents and accepts various disciplines of performing arts.

The Ex: marking a special time of year for Toronto families

Write us

T

oronto summers have an ebb and flow to them marked by different events and traditions that define the season, but with the opening of the Canadian National Exhibition tomorrow comes the clearest sign of all: the end of summer is approaching. It’s part of life in the city and of being a Torontonian, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. The 137th annual version of The Ex opens Friday and continues until Labour Day on Monday, Sept. 7. The fair itself has its own traditions, including lots of wacky food creations, concerts, displays, theme days and the Canadian International Air Show to wrap it all up on the Labour Day weekend. Toronto families carefully pick the days they will attend based on events they want to see, and those are handed down our view traditions through the generations. You can pretty much bet that if your A Toronto parents made a point of going to The Ex on the air show weekend tradition because that’s what they wanted to see, you will now be taking returns your own kids, or maybe even grandkids, to also see the air show. Others make attending on Warriors Day or for the Labour Day parade a part of their family traditions. Respecting those traditions has been one of the reasons the CNE continues to be so successful and holds a special place in the hearts of Torontonians. The Ex, though, is not bound by tradition as it is also the place to see the newest innovations and products. The CNE makes sure it offers new events and experiences every year, and this year one of them is the Craft Beer Fest that takes place for the first time this summer. Though often referred to as bittersweet for kids who start counting the days until school starts again, the CNE is far from the only thing going on in Toronto over the remaining days of summer. Just a quick look around shows us this weekend has the Scarborough Afro-Carib Fest at Albert Campbell Square, the Tirgan Iranian Festival at Harbourfront, Ukrainian Independence Day at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, and the Tommy Thompson Park Butterfly Festival in the Beach, to name but a few. As always, if you’re looking for things to do in the city, visit us at insidetoronto.com/toronto-events

column

Welcome to the dog days of summer Summer camp must have ended Saturday morning, because when I walked up the street and parked myself on my favourite bench on the corner that evening, the neighbourhood was teeming with kids we hadn’t seen since the end of school. A group of four nearby was trying to figure out what to do on their first night back. Tristan: “So, what’s it going to be, gentlemen? We’ve been standing here for half an hour and haven’t been able to come up with anything. So why don’t we just head over to my house and download a movie? What would you like to see?” Serge: “Somebody else pick. I’m too excited and nervous following the Blue Jays to even think about anything else.” Arjun: “I’ll choose then. How about 102 Dalmatians? There’s three alone on the other side of the block as we speak.”

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Jake: “I never saw 101 Dalmatians. Will I be able to follow the plot?” Tristan: “What plot? They ran out of story lines by 48 Dalmatians.” Serge: “It was closer to 25 Dalmatians if you ask me.” Arjun: “What are you both talking about? They were classics. All of them. Starting with One Dalmatian.” Jake: “I don’t get what the big fascination is with Dalmatians? You take away the spots, what’s left?” Tristan: “You can’t take those spots away. They’re stuck on forever.” Serge: “He’s right. I tried once. They wouldn’t budge.” Arjun: “One thing I always wanted to know, in 102 Dalmatians, is it the same original 101 plus one more? Or are they 102 new ones?”

Jake: “You really think there are actually 102? Come on. Ask yourself, when do you ever see them all together in the same room at the same time? My guess is that were probably only five or 10 of them, max, and the director filmed them from different angles to make it seem like there were 102.” Tristan: “There might not have even been one real one. They were probably all computer generated.” Serge: “I heard Flipper wasn’t even a dolphin. It was Lassie in a wetsuit.” Arjun: “Yeah, right. And I suppose Skippy the Bush Kangaroo was really Lassie in faux fur with Minnie Mouse in faux fur in her pouch.” Jake: “Actually, it was Mini-Me in faux fur. Minnie wanted too much money.” Tristan: “Thanks a lot for spoiling the ending, man. I haven’t seen Skippy the Bush Kangaroo yet. Good friend you are.” Serge: “I think I’ll pass

on the Dalmatians, if that’s OK. Now, if there is a 102 Dachshunds movie, count me in. Everybody loves dachshunds.” Arjun: “I thought it was Raymond everybody loved. And what are dachshunds?” Jake: “You’re joking. They’re those cute little wiener dogs nobody can resist.” Tristan: “You got that right. Every time I see one of those adorable pooches I just wanna pick it up and give it a big hug.” Serge: “I wouldn’t if I were you, Tristan. You squeeze one with those big arms of yours and it won’t be a wiener dog anymore. It’ll turn into a pancake dog.” ...to be continued. In the meantime, it’s official, the kids are back. Now playing at a corner near me. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. WANTED 30 PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS Qualified Participants Needed for Technology Field Test

During this Limited-Time event, we are looking for people like you, who may be experiencing varying levels of hearing loss to evaluate a remarkable new line of digital hearing aids and a rehabilitative process that could be the solution to your difficulties. Call us toll-free today at one of the numbers below to see if you qualify for this Field Test. Potential candidates will be given a FREE hearing test to determine candidacy. Participants will be given a FREE in-office demonstration, and the opportunity to evaluate the latest, most advanced hearing aid technology for 30 days at drastically reduced rates. A refund* is available at the end of the test period if you feel your test aids do not improve your hearing. A full range of sizes are available in this new technology, including the exceptionally disscree reet open-fit and IIC models shown here:

August 17 - August 21 Show us a picture of your worn out gear for back to school.

Similar to choosing between contact lenses or glasses, you can decide with your hearing professional which hearing aid style would best suit you. Both styles have approximately the same performance and functions, but are fitted to the ear differently.

Enter every day for a chance to

It’s almost a shame this technology isn’t more visible! Open-fit and Invisible-In-the-Canal (IIC) hearing aids are smaller and more beautiful than ever, striking the perfect balance between size and performance. The elegant and highly discreet open-fit hearing aid fits perfectly on top of your ear, and the thin tube in your ear canal is designed to disappear against your skin. The new IIC hearing aid--now with wireless technology--provides all of the outstanding features and benefits you want in a digital hearing aid, minus the stigma that came with wearing one in the past.

Covering up is theme of Modest Fashion and Design Festival >>>from page 1 the knee, more conservative dress. It’s like the ’40s and ’50s, more covered and more reserved, not too much of the chest exposed.” A self-proclaimed former party girl who converted from Christianity to Islam in 2011,

Pitter said it can be frustrating finding clothing that conforms to her religious beliefs. “The (conservative) market is more work-related clothing, not day-to-day wear,” she said. “If you go to the malls it’s hard to find. Most have splits in the clothing or sheer panels.

Even when I was Christian, I attended Anglican, Pentecostal and Baptist churches and used to wear long skirts. When I converted, I didn’t drastically change the way I dressed.” The IMFDF will showcase designers of modest clothing from Africa, Malaysia,

the Middle East, the United States and Canada. There will be a workshop on the modest business woman, a “girl talk” forum, and a fitness demo, Pitter said, adding United Kingdom designer Pearl Daisy will be in attendance. “It’s not just a fashion

show, it’s a fashion event,” she said. The IMFDF is open to women of all religions and backgrounds, and will feature plus and petite sizes, day-today wear, and evening attire, she said. “In Canada, there aren’t

many events catering to such a niche market,” Pitter said. Tickets are $20 for the fashion show and $45 for the VIP party. Admission to the shopping expo is free.

There’s a federal election coming up on the distant horizon. For now, the talk on Toronto airwaves is about criminal justice, cheques, and other matters related to the Mike Duffy trial. At some point in the long weeks leading up to Oct. 19, one hopes that talk will centre closer to Toronto and our needs. Earlier in the summer, Mayor John Tory held meetings with representatives of the Liberals and New Democrats, and earlier in the year spent time making Toronto’s case to the federal Conservatives. As he pointed out then, things were looking pretty good for Toronto: two of three parties were committed to funding his Smart Track transit plan, and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau appears to be waiting for the right time to say so. So really, for Toronto, there is no downside. Well, that would be the case if transit weren’t the only story. Toronto has other needs that only the federal government can properly meet.

david nickle the city We could use help with our crumbling stock of affordable housing. We could do with a federally funded national child care program. And back at transit – once we get finished building a Scarborough subway along about the same route as the Smart Track plan, we’re going to need money for the downtown relief line that everyone agrees is the really crucial transit improvement. These all should be, at some point, deal-breaking or dealmaking policies in making a rational choice for our next prime minister. As matters are unfolding, however, a rational, Toronto-centric choice is not what will be on most Toronto voters’ minds. If voters were taking simple enlightened self-interest into account, the child benefit cheques the federal Conservatives sent out just before the writ was dropped

should have had some impact on polling for them. While it’s early days in this very long election, it’s a safe bet that voting Torontonians will be dividing along lines more familiar from the past couple of elections: Harper Nation, if you will, and the remainder of the city looking to turf the bum out. That divide was in evidence when Harper stopped by Etobicoke (ground zero for that other Nation) in the company of an angry, foulmouthed man who swore at reporters and suggested they all cheated on their taxes. From another part of the city, I and other Torontonians watched the display with a horrified recognition. Many elections ago, former prime minister Kim Campbell made the point that elections were no time to discuss issues. Those things get sorted out afterwards, when we’ve all gotten the bile out of our systems.

Summer is almost over - the CNE returns Aug. 21 to Sept. 7 The 137th annual Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is almost here and we can already smell the deepfried Oreos. Along with the shop-

ping and goodies at the international pavilion, this year has a handful of new shows to check out including RUSH: Parkour Demonstrations, the

West Coast Lumberjack Show, Bon Voyage! Acrobatic & Ice Skating Show and The XPogo Stunt Team. But if you get tired of stunts, you can also rock

out to the line-up of free concerts from Cody Simpson, Tokyo Police Club, Rick Springfield and Dallas Smith to name a few. Carnival-goers will

also be able to gear up for the CNE’s first Craft Beer Fest, which will have 11 regional master brewers at the returning Food Truck Frenzy. Returning favourites

ONTARIO GOVERNMENT NOTICE NOTICE OF DETAIL DESIGN COMMENCEMENT Replacement of the Avenue Road Bridge over Highway 401 – G.W.P. 2087-13-00 Detail Design and Class Environmental Assessment Study THE PROJECT AECOM has been retained by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to undertake a Detail Design and Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Study for the replacement of the Avenue Road Bridge over Highway 401. The project limits are located in the City of Toronto. PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS The Avenue Road Bridge over Highway 401 will be replaced with a new structure that will generally follow the existing alignment of Avenue Road and maintain the existing Highway 401 interchange configuration. The new bridge will be four lanes wide to accommodate two (2) northbound and two (2) southbound lanes. Existing and future traffic volumes do not require a separate deceleration lane for the ramp to Highway 401 westbound therefore this lane will be eliminated but the connection to Highway 401 westbound will remain. During construction it is anticipated that one through lane will be maintained on Avenue Road in each direction and pedestrian access will be maintained on one side of the bridge. No other long-term lane or ramp closures are anticipated. THE PROCESS This project is following the approved planning process for a Group ‘C’ project under the MTO Class EA for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000). An Environmental Screening Document (ESD) will be prepared to document the study process, design details, consultation undertaken during the study, and potential environmental issues and mitigation measures. The ESD will not be made available for public review and comment, but can be made available to interested persons upon request. A. Macdonald’s name carved in stone wJohn The plaza outside Union Station has been officially renamed after Canada’s first prime minister. At a ceremony Tuesday, the newly renovated space was christened Sir John A. Macdonald Plaza and a plaque erected in honour of the man most credited with building the Canadian Pacific Railway. But the designation doesn’t come without some controversy given Macdonald’s role in instituting a “head tax” on Chinese migrants and his policies on First Nations people during his near20 years as prime minister. The move represents a diminished plan to honour Macdonald after a city survey found the majority of respondents were opposed to naming the station after him.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT ROAD CONSTRUCTION back on track after pan ams The Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games are over and construction projects that were suspended are now set to resume resulting in more road closures. The work includes repairs on the Gardiner Expressway, which were scheduled to get underway yesterday, between Strachan Avenue and Bathurst Street and will require a reduction of one lane in each direction. Other projects ready to resume this week are roadresurfacing projects on Dufferin Street, O’Connor Drive and The Queensway.

STREETS FORUM SCHEDULED FOR OCT. 1 wcomplete

tests aNNOUNCEMENTS for visually impared riders wTTC

You can now register for this year’s edition of the Complete Streets Forum. Organized by the Toronto Centre of the Active Transportation (TCAT), the event is dedicated to the idea of making streets open to use by all – pedestrians, cyclists, public transit users, and drivers. It is taking place Thursday, Oct. 1 at Hart House at the University of Toronto and will feature input from local and international transportation professionals and advocates for complete streets. Early-bird pricing is available

Until the end of the year the TTC will test the effectiveness of pre-boarding announcements intended to assist visually impaired riders. The pilot project will take place on a handful of buses on the 11 Bayview and 7 Bathurst routes. When the bus approaches a stop, as the front doors open, an external speaker will broadcast what route it serves and where it’s headed. Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. TTCriders seeks members to fight rising transit fares Advocacy group seeks ‘route captains’ to solicit support RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com TTCriders wants to start a revolution. The city’s largest transit advocacy group is recruiting volunteers to act as “route captains” to engage transit users at bus stops and subway stations, advocate for local service improvements, and lobby city councillors to speak out in favour of better TTC funding. According to group spokesperson Suhail Barot, the recruitment drive is meant to give voice to a mass of transit riders, particularly with transportation a key issue in the October federal election,

and a TTC fare hike all but sure for next year. “1.8 million people take transit in Toronto every day,” said Barot during an interview last week. “If we can get them engaged we can really build a movement.” The group is planning a day of action on Monday, Sept. 13 and will canvas approximately 50 transit locations on the importance of better funding for the perpetually cashstrapped TTC, which has reported a preliminary operating budget shortfall of nearly $100 million for next year in the wake of announcements to improve and restore service to pre-2011 levels. TTCriders has made a name for itself of late with agitprop protests and social media shaming of political figures through awareness campaigns such as #TTCsardines, which has captured the level of disenchantment by transit

Photo/CourTesy

TTCriders and supporters rally against higher TTC fares at City Hall in January 2014. The group is currently recruiting new members to continue its fight against transit fare increases.

users. Even elected officials are frequently spouting the group’s catchphrases and

slogans. That politicians are eager to co-opt TTCriders’ message is a sign they

understand the importance of public transit for a city like Toronto, Barot said.

“They seem to be getting the message of the importance of better transit. And if they don’t do anything else we will hold them accountable,” he said. Barot said the group will also continue to target the provincial government for failing to provide adequate operational funds for the TTC, which relies overwhelmingly on fare box revenue and city subsidy to meet its budget needs. “We’ve worked to get the province to fund the TTC’s operations which they stopped doing over 15 years ago,” he said. “You need funding to expand the system and lower fares. Funding comes from the city and it could come from the province and the federal government as well. You can’t make the system better unless the resources are available.”
