ike any birthday boy given a Maple Leafs jersey with the name and number of the team captain, James Houston was thrilled. At his party, he posed for photos with the cherished sweater and smiled as guests sang Happy Birthday before he tucked into his birthday cake. But it wasn’t the name and number of current team captain Dion Phaneuf on the jersey and this wasn’t a birthday party for a child. Instead, Houston was the guest of honour last Friday at a party at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre’s veterans’ centre, a day before he turned 105. The jersey carries the number 10 and the name Syl Apps, who was the Leafs’ captain from 1940 to 1943 and again from 1945 until his retirement in 1948. Apps led the Leafs to three Stanley Cups.

That includes 1942, when the Leafs came back from a 3-0 game deficit against the Detroit Red Wings to win the next four matches in a row to take the Cup, the only time the feat has been accomplished in the Stanley Cup final. In fact, the feat has only been accomplished three times ever in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL). “He was a good man,” said Houston, who lived

near Lawrence Avenue and Bellamy Road in Scarborough until his wife, Lou, died in June 2007 at the age of 99. “That’s a wonderful sweater.” Syl Apps Jr., who attended the party, said his father, who died in 1998, would have been honoured by Houston’s request for his jersey. “I think my dad would have thought it was kind of special. It’s nice,” he said.

“It’s a very select group of people who saw the Leafs play back in those days and can comment on it.” Mike Ferriman, the Leafs’ manager of game presentation, said the team doesn’t get many requests for Apps’ jerseys but the team was pleased to provide the gift to Houston, especially since he is a veteran. Although Houston was in a wheelchair during the party, the father of two, grandfather of two and

great-grandfather of three with another on the way next month, often gets around just using a cane. He has trouble hearing but remains quick-witted, his 71-year-old son, Braden Houston, said. “He’s got a great sense of humour,” said Braden, who grew up playing hockey in the Leafs’ system before joining a team in South Africa. “He can remember anything back from the ’20s and ’30s in detail. He’s still telling me what to do. ‘Time to get a haircut, son.’” When Braden showed his dad a 1942 photo of Apps and other Leafs, mistakenly telling him a man in uniform was one-time team player, coach and executive King Clancy, Houston was quick to point it couldn’t have been because Clancy wasn’t in the military. Turns out it was Leafs owner Conn Smythe. A life-long fan of the Leafs, Houston now has trouble following the puck on TV, Braden said. His biggest complaint is that players wear helmets, making it difficult to make out their faces, and that some don’t keep their hair cut short enough, he added. Houston’s party and gift came through Sunnybrook’s Grant a Wish program, which helps make the

dreams of veterans come true. “Veterans are encouraged to wish for whatever their hearts desire,” said program co-ordinator Leanne Hughes, a recreational therapist. About 850 wishes have been granted since the program began in 2005, the Year of the Veteran. “I once heard someone say, ‘Veterans are the nobility of Canada’s population and we can never do enough to show our gratitude for all they have done.’ I tend to agree,” Hughes said. Born in 1908, Houston, who worked for Eaton’s for 45 years, was 34 years old when he applied to the airforce in 1942. Because of his age and the fact he had a family, he never saw duty overseas. Instead, he provided some training and was assigned to security detail, once even escorting a prisoner to Toronto from up north, Braden said. Watching his dad being made a fuss of at his party, Braden said his father was thrilled with the celebration and his gift. “It’s really a highlight. He’s very happy,” he said.

Sunny skies greet environment minister at storm centre LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Maybe the only person in Canada who was not wishing for a gorgeous summer day last Thursday was Rob Kuhn. Kuhn, a senior meteorologist, was demonstrating weather-tracking equipment to Canada’s new environment minister, Leona Aglukkaq, as she toured North York’s Ontario Storm Prediction Centre on Dufferin Street south of Steeles Avenue on Aug. 15. There wasn’t much to see. “It’s a beautiful day from coast to coast,” said Kuhn, who was left asking Aglukkaq to imagine how the screens would look if storms were

happening somewhere in Canada. At a press conference following the tour, senior climatologist Dave Phillips joked the day’s temperature of 20 C would appeal to Aglukkaq, who is from Nunavut. “We’ve outdone ourselves in welcoming you here. We’ve even brought you a Nunavut summer day here in Toronto. Not a great day for drinking beer on outdoor patios, but it must make you feel right at home here,” he said. Weather is a topic that is near and dear to all Canadians, especially those from the North, Phillips said. “All Canadians are passionate about the weather. We love

Last week, the Insurance Bureau of Canada reported the storm caused $850 million in damage, making it Ontario’s most expensive natural disaster. It is important to take lessons from the storm to ensure cities are in a better position to handle extreme weather, Aglukkaq said.

Emerald ash borer: time running out

ime is running out for Toronto property owners looking to save ash trees from the emerald ash borer beetle. We urge property owners to educate themselves about the beetle, the tree it feeds on, and the best course of action to take depending on the tree’s condition. The beetle, first discovered in Toronto near Hwy. 404 in North York in 2007, is an invasive species that is highly destructive to ash trees. According to the City of Toronto, there are an estimated 860,000 ash trees on private and public lands in the city. Michelle Bourdeau, program manager for LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests), said provided a tree’s infestation is not visible already, TreeAzin is a viable solution, “likely cheaper” than getting a large tree removed from your property. If this route is viable, Bourdeau advises the use of licensed professionals and obtaining more than one quote. Consider joining your neighbours for a group discount if there are a number of trees in your neighbourhood. It’s important that property owners educate themselves about what’s on their land and how to care for it. Use this as an opportunity to avoid potentially costly tasks in the future. Time to repair public confidence in police

harging a police officer with murder in the shooting death of a youth is so troubling. Troubling, not only because of the circumstances and the tragedies now impacting those directly affected, not only because of the severity of the charge, but also because the incident is eroding Torontonians’ confidence in their police. The outrage that grew as over a million viewers downloaded a video of the shooting also latched on to additional events, such as the number of emotionally disturbed individuals killed by police and the difficulties in laying charges arising from the G20 disturbances. In this case authorities were quick to react. The police chief asked for a review on the use of force. The Ontario ombudsman will study how the police defuse situations. As well, probes are underway by the Special Investigations

david soknacki beyond the headlines Unit and the Toronto Police Service itself. Many hope that once these reports are presented, and the recommendations implemented, all will be well. After all, crime is down and Toronto is perceived as a safe city. To think that Toronto’s policing requires just a bit of tinkering is to miss the warnings revealed by these incidents and the latest crime statistics. While Toronto’s crime has fallen, it has fallen much faster, and to significantly lower levels, in many other cities including in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Compared to other Ontario jurisdictions, and by a number of measures, the ability of Toronto’s police service to solve or otherwise clear criminal code incidents is among the least efficient.

At the same time the world of policing is changing rapidly. Demographics, new legal requirements and policing techniques are all in flux, as are public expectations. Perhaps the most obvious example is the ubiquity and impact of bystanders posting images online, an activity that forever changes the balance of power among the public, our institutions and the police. It is clearly in the public’s interest to have confidence in its police force, a priority with which our police chief and the Toronto Police Services Board constantly struggle. Along these lines they have encouraged inclusive hiring practices, regularly implemented demands for reform and met with whoever has a complaint. Yet these responses, as well as the probes underway, only address the symptoms of change. It has been almost a generation since the police

services board has worked through, with residents, a vision and direction for the police, advising on priorities and setting expectations. It’s time to do it again. Developing and implementing a new strategic plan for the police will achieve many goals. It will refocus the chief and his officers to meeting residents’ needs. It has the potential of opening up new perspectives to enhance police productivity. Even the process itself will go a long way in refreshing the critical relationship between our police and the public. Should the consequences of the shooting include a complete review of policing that restores our public confidence then at least there will be some lasting benefit from the incident. Just as it seems as if his marriage is falling apart, Bruce realizes that his relationship with his wife is more important than his pursuit of social status. “It’s really important to me as a director to create comedies with truthful, believable performances,” said Stark, who wrote, directed and produced the film. “Tennis is already an ego driven sport, and then you add money, class and status. I really wanted to capture people in their pursuit to belong. The character really wants to rub elbows with the elite.” The film was inspired by Stark’s experiences growing up playing tennis in North York, he said. Invited as a guest by friends, he witnessed first hand the attitudes that can come with belonging to a prestigious private club. “I was struck by the little micro society culture and the types of pretentious people you meet,” Stark said. “It’s a great topic for comedy. I’m really happy with how (the film) turned out. When the performers are really good, it takes on a new life. I was really lucky to find four fantastic actors.” Making movies is something Stark has done from a young age. He picked up a camcorder at age 11 and made his first movie while a student at

Denlow Elementary School. By the time he finished high school, Stark had shot 30 short films. His love of film continued to grow in his teen years and Stark found himself making movies for class projects at Earl Haig Secondary School whenever possible, never giving up on his goal of becoming a filmmaker. But with Hollywood a far off dream, Stark enrolled at the University of Toronto and studied biology. After completing his undergraduate degree, Stark felt unsettled and decided he needed to pursue his passion for film and applied and was accepted into the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. His big break came in the fall of 2008 when he edited Fonzworth Bentley’s music video Everybody featuring Kanye West and Andre 3000. It was then Stark began work on The Legend of Neil, a web television parody of the video game The Legend of Zelda, which aired on Atom TV on Comedy Central. His work as director of photography for the web series earned him a nomination for Best Cinematography at the first annual Streamy Awards – web television’s version of the Academy Awards – in 2009 in Los Angeles. Stark’s work has made it onto screens at various film festivals over the past two

years, including at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2011 for Afternoon Tea, for which he received a 2012 Leo Award nomination for Best Screenwriting in a Short Drama. His short comedy An Innocent Family, which won him the Best Director award at the 2012 Nevada International Film Festival, also earned him a nomination for Best Short Film at the Milan International Film Festival Awards in 2012. Stark’s script My Son’s Big Bris was a finalist in the screenwriting competition at the 2011 Los Angeles Comedy Festival and the 2011 Beverly Hills Film Festival. He’s hoping to make the film his feature film directorial debut and is currently looking for funding, he said. Taking on a darker topic, Stark was recently in Vancouver shooting a short film about a girl dealing with her sister’s suicide. “I like both drama and comedy,” he said. “Both genres, for me, have common aspects. I want them to be universal stories that deal with human experiences.” Along with Friday’s premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival, 30-Love will also be screened Sunday and will have its United States premiere at the LA Shorts Film Festival in September.

Property owners in Toronto have until the end of this month to protect whichever ash trees can still be saved, say people involved in fighting the emerald ash borer beetle. A tiny invasive pest, the beetle was found near Hwy. 404 in North York in 2007. It has exploded across Toronto, slowly killing every ash tree it finds – around 860,000 in the city’s yards, parks, streets and ravines. The only proven defence is a pesticide called TreeAzin, but it must be injected between June 1 and Aug. 31, when the tree’s vascular tissues can use it to kill beetle larvae under their bark. Toronto’s infestation, much of it still hidden in seemingly healthy trees, is so advanced next summer may be too late for most ash tree owners to try the pesticide. “The time is running out,” Josef Ric, Toronto Urban Forestry’s acting supervisor of forest health care said in an interview. The City of Toronto’s online resource page on the beetle (www.toronto.ca/ trees/eab.htm) includes a map showing the infested areas in February 2012, but Ric said the map will be taken down because it’s obsolete; the beetle is simply everywhere, he said. “It’s very aggressive. It has surprised everybody.” City contractors injected 4,000 trees with TreeAzin last summer and are treating 9,000 more this year – ash along streets or in parks selected, ward by ward, for being in good condition and not showing a lot of the leaf dieback that first marks the infestation’s effects. At eye level, contractors staple small green aluminum plates on the injected trees, a sign of the city’s commitment to keep injecting them every two years until the pest is gone. It has also planted 15,000 replacement trees in a variety of species, said Ric, adding next summer good candidates for TreeAzin may still be found, but predicted there will be far fewer. “What we’ve done so far (in selecting for injections) is almost final.” As the peak of ash mortality in the city approaches – Ric guessed that will be “next year, probably, and the year after” – ash looking OK now may soon be dead or in severe decline. Businesses or homeowners with ash trees on their land are on their own as they weigh the considerable cost of injections with the cost of removing their trees. The Canadian Forest Service and other agencies are testing natural predators for the beetle, parasitic

wasps, but it’s thought it will take 10 years for the ash borer population to crash along with its food supply. Michelle Bourdeau, program manager for LEAF – Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests – said TreeAzin, provided a tree’s infestation is not visible already, is worth a shot. “It’s likely cheaper to treat if you’ve got a large tree,” than pay to remove it, she said. “It’s an irreplaceable thing.” TreeAzin applicators must be licensed, and property owners should get more than one quote, said Bourdeau, adding a few interested people on a street should ask for a group discount. The non-profit group, advises people to plant trees as a response to the continuing losses to Toronto’s tree canopy, even if they had no ash trees on their land.

It was a great experience, an unforgettable experience.” The competition, open to foreign-born post-secondary students under age 30, or overseas-born Chinese whose first language is not of Chinese origin, is made up of Chinese language (Mandarin) proficiency, knowledge about China, Chinese cultural skills and comprehensive learning abilities. Students who win the preliminary rounds held in their countries qualified to go to China for the finals. Pokorn won the preliminary competition in May, which was held at Seneca College. Pokorn, along with four others, made it to the Top 5 of the contest, and each won the title of champion of their region, with Pokorn taking home Champion of the Americas, he said. “A lot of the contest was performance related,” said

Pokorn, who also won the popularity contest. “There w e re s k e t c h e s, m u s i c , speeches. It’s like American Idol but for foreigners trying to show off their Chinese skills.” The competition also included some Amazing Race-type activities, with an amusement park styled as an old Chinese village that had participants look for people dressed as well-known Chinese figures, he said. Pokorn, who is doing a double major in international and Hispanic studies, took a gap year after his first year at Glendon and headed to China to study Chinese, he said. It was there he heard of the Bridge competition. Upon resuming his studies at Glendon, Pokorn took a Chinese course, with professors encouraging him to participate in the Bridge competition, which was paid for by the Chinese National Hanban organization. Pokorn trained for the competition with the assis-

tance of a professor and two Chinese friends, who helped him with performance and speech tips. “I don’t think I would have been able to win without their help,” he said. Pokorn, who splits his time between his mother’s home in Scarborough and his father’s place in North York, won an all-expensespaid scholarship for a full study program in China, in a discipline and university of his choice, thanks to his Champion of the Americas win. “I might do acting or diplomacy,” Pokorn said. “It was my childhood dream to become an actor. I’m thinking of pursuing that. My dad took me to plays and exposed me to theatre early on, and I’ve done some community theatre stuff. “The whole experience (competition) was like an internship for show biz.”

is in the right on this one. An appointment is essentially undemocratic. It delivers a cut-rate councillor for eight or nine meetings who arrives already beholden to the councillors who supported him or her in the appointment process. And that debt is considerable. The caretaker steps into a six-figure job that will either be abandoned after eight months of lacklustre performance, or parlayed into a potentially long political career by supplying the advantage of incumbency in the next general municipal election. Granted, one expects Mayor Ford will bring to bear his considerable knack for campaigning to help his favoured candidate win the byelection. But that is fair play in any election. And if a moderate or left-leaning candidate wants to take a stab at the ward Holyday has represented for decades – well, the considerable knack for campaigning that forces on the left and centre can muster can enter the game too. That’s fine. Because if we’re going to be playing this high-stakes game, we owe it to everyone – particularly the residents of Ward 3 – to play it fair.

At-risk youth from across Toronto have been given a unique opportunity to beautify the city’s subway stops thanks to a partnership between Arts for Children and Youth (AFCY) and Pattison Onestop. The pilot project, called Art Responsibly, will see the youths’ art replacing traditional advertising posters in a number of TTC subway stops. The initiative came when young AFCY participant Fitzroy Facey raised issues about being responsible when it comes to painting graffiti and other forms of art in the city. “The subway posters were given to us and the young artists erased them and painted over

them to express their thoughts on what it means to be responsible by being artful,” said AFCY executive director Julie Frost. The posters tackle issues such as inclusivity, embracing diversity and shining a positive light on the LGBTQ community.
