Two new exhibitions, distinct but connected by one man’s passion for India, open to the public starting Saturday at the Aga Khan Museum. One of the exhibitions called the Visions of Mughal India: The Collection of Howard Hodgkin features 60 historical works from the British artist’s personal collection. DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com After two years of advocacy work, North York residents will gain easier access to the Black Creek Community Farm. City council voted to approve a traffic control signal at the intersection of Jane Street and Hullmar Drive that will open up the farm to pedestrians, cyclists and transit users. Nancy Smith Lea, director for Toronto Centre for Active Transportation (TCAT), which led the charge for the new signal, said currently the only way for walkers from the residential side of Jane Street to access the park is to walk up to the nearest intersection at Steeles Avenue to cross the road and then walk back down. The community farm is on the east side of Jane Street, while the homes in the area are on the west side. “This will be a huge improvement for people who want access but don’t have a car, and live close by and would like to walk or cycle and get there safely,” Smith Lea said. “This could have a significant impact on people living there.” A pedestrian count by Ryerson University students indicates that >>>easier, page 22

Willowdale dad prints TTC subway car for wooden train set DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The classic wooden train set has been around a long time and can be customized with a variety of cars, all capable on riding on the same tracks. There are above-ground passenger and freight trains – you can even get Thomas the Tank Engine – and underground cars resembling those from some of the world’s largest cities, from New York’s subway vehicles to London’s tube cars. Thanks to a North York dad, you can now add Toronto to the list. The Willowdale father of two girls has designed and 3D-printed a scaled TTC H6 subway car, the utilitarian, grey vehicle that ran the Toronto underground for nearly 30 years. The H6 cars were in service from
1987 to 2014. His design is available online to anyone. “We have those wooden tracks,” Richard Audette said. “For my kids, it’s the train they ride when we go to the ROM, when we go wherever, so it’s neat to have something you can more closely associate with. It was just something that was local that you couldn’t buy off the shelves.” Audette admitted his daughters, aged seven and four, don’t use the TTC car any more than any of their other trains. Audette is a business analyst, but has an undergraduate degree in engineering. He recently began tinkering with 3D printing, first downloading a design off the Internet and printing it at one of the Toronto Public Library’s accessible 3D printers. He then made a design

of his own, a polar bearshaped bicycle tire nipple using CAD software. “If you can buy it commercially, it doesn’t make sense to make. So I looked for simple things that are within my skill set,” he said. He then went on to design the subway car. He said the design and build took him about 20 hours. Printing the vehicle took three two-hour sessions. At a cost of approximately $6 per session, printing the train costs about $18. The printer prints the train’s plastic body, trucks and wheels. Final assembly requires screwing the pieces together (10 screws) and painting the vehicle. Anyone who is planning to use his design to make the toy will need their own screws. “It’s just neat. You design something and you

He said it’s not difficult to make your own design. “Anyone who has used any drawing tool, you’re just adding depth,” Audette said. “It’s harder, but it’s not infinitely harder than what people do already in two dimensions.” Up next, Audette said he wants to design and print a winged unicorn resembling the characters from a show his children watch, Mia and Me. The library’s 3D printers can be reserved at the Toronto Reference Library and the Fort York branch. There’s a two-hour limit on each job. You’ll need to take a short certification course before being allowed to use the printers.
When Hugo Marrello realized years ago he was gluten intolerant, he set out to make products free of the protein composite. Problem was, when you remove gluten, you also remove protein, and that did not digest well with the North York resident. So Marrello, an engineer scientist by trade, set out to make gluten-free and lactosefree protein bars, starting up company ProteinBake about a year and a half ago after a decade of research. Pure protein isolate is added to all his products, keeping the ingredient list short and simple and without words that are hard to pronounce or added sugar, he said, adding he used to make his products in his home kitchen and now has a facility in Markham.
He stresses ProteinBake is not diet food, and people can still eat what they normally do. But he claims with the proprietary baking method of his products, protein stays in the body for four to six hours, meaning people often eat less food for the rest of the day without feeling hungry. He also believes he is the first person to successfully bake appetizing products using pure protein isolate.

His products have received positive feedback from doctors and professional athletes, as posted on his website. Marrello, who credits his products with helping him lose 50 pounds over six months, said many people told him he couldn’t bake with protein isolate, but he was undeterred. After years and “thousands of pounds of food into the garbage,” the 65-year-old has
finally perfected his products, which include almond protein bars, sesame protein bars, protein cubes, fruit cake and muffins. “Other protein bars have 27 ingredients,” he said, adding he has never tasted protein bars other than his. “When I can’t pronounce the words, I shouldn’t be eating the food. The real complexity is to make it simple.” His almond bar has five ingredients: honey, almonds, cocoa, black currents and protein isolate. The same goes for the sesame bar, except sesame seeds replace almonds. Marrello calls them universal bars, meaning people can use them anyway they want, as a snack or a meal replacement. After losing such a large amount of weight so quickly, Marrello said his friends persuaded him to appear on Dragon’s Den to pitch ProteinBake. Marrello’s pitch was part of the Jan. 28 show, which failed to get a deal. Clad in a black overcoat and pants, he ripped off his clothes, leaving him in only short red shorts and shoes, revealing his slim down
and muscle gain. He also appeared to insult Dragon Arlene Dickinson’s weight, which he said was all for entertainment. And ironically, it was Dickinson he had hoped to partner with, noting her successful marketing skills. All five Dragons declined to invest in ProteinBake; Marrello asked $500,000 for 10 per cent of his company, evaluating it at $5 million. Marrello believes ProteinBake, which had $40,000 in sales last year, has the potential to be worth billions. The morning after his segment aired, Marrello said his phone had been ringing off the hook and he’d made several thousand dollars in sales from customers across Canada, along with inquiries to sell his products in stores. “ The exper ience (on Dragon’s Den) overall was extremely positive,” he said. “They let me get my message across. I advise anybody who wants their product exposed to go on air. The experience is worth it.”

Feds smart to back SmartTrack
M
r. Mayor goes to Ottawa, and with him a pitch for those in our nation’s capital to consider his SmartTrack transit plan, the key plank in John Tory’s run to become mayor of Toronto. With the city already on shaky budgetary/financial footing – Toronto is to borrow from itself to fill the 2015 budget hole, and city manager Joe Pennachetti is looking at “new” revenue tools to fund growth – all levels of government need to step up. Especially when considering how much money Toronto sends to Ottawa and Queen’s Park. Tory’s Tuesday and Wednesday itinerary includes meeting with Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair, federal Transportation Minister Lisa Raitt and several Toronto MPs. These are discussions that must happen, something Tory started with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in December, shortly after being sworn in as mayor. Whether Harper drops the writ our view before the fixed Oct. 19 federal election date is uncertain, but it is time to start talking transit with Talk transit our local MPs – and it’s their job to bring our concerns and ideas with those to Ottawa. seeking votes Transit has been one, if not the main municipal issue for nearly a decade. With that comes the necessity to keep that discussion going on a daily basis. Not just during elections. Transit issues stretch beyond Toronto because the city is an economic generator for the entire country, and congestion is an economic killer – the social and economic costs across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area are estimated at $6 billion annually. The federal leaders have been in Toronto recently – making announcements, shaking hands – so it’s obvious interest in Canada’s largest city is there. SmartTrack will not solve the entire issue; however, getting people around the city more quickly on transit will help take some cars off the streets and quicken commuters’ trips. Tory has often repeated his position that the federal government needs to sign on to a 10-year agreement to fund transit in big cities across the country, and that SmartTrack should be next on the prime minister’s list. It is now our responsibility to make sure that position extends to our doors, when federal hopefuls start knocking. It is up to us to make sure transit – not just Tory’s SmartTrack – stays top-of-mind leading to the federal election.

We should pay more for services we enjoy To the editor: I recently moved to the Roncesvalles area from Burlington and quite honestly was astounded at the low taxes residents are paying in Toronto. Our home is valued at $920,000 and we are only paying $3,600 in taxes. In Burlington, we would be paying almost double that amount and I feel the services are better in Toronto. The only way for the
city to achieve the money needed to maintain the infrastructure and have convenient and affordable public transit is to raise our taxes. If a young family can afford to spend these large amounts for their homes, they can certainly afford another $500 in taxes. We, Torontonians, have a deal and we must start playing catchup. n innovative program run by WoodGreen (WG) Community Services is helping youth of African descent from the city’s east end develop into responsible adults. Rites of Passage, which is based on a well-tested, internationally recognized afro-centric curriculum that also includes volunteering, leadership training and employment, kicked off for 2015 earlier this month. This time around, 23 young people aged 14 to 17 from several Toronto high schools have signed up to take part. Tashawn, a Grade 10 student from Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts, learned about the program after attending an information session hosted by WoodGreen. He said he was interested in taking part because he wants to learn more about his African roots. Beoncé, a Grade 9 student who attends Victoria Park Collegiate Institute, learned about the program from her older brother who also took part in Rites of Passage. She was especially interested in joining after attending the graduation event that included traditional African items and activities. Albert Munyorovi graduated from Rites of Passage last year but is back as a leader-in-training. He knows first-hand the benefits of the program. “Like these guys, at first I didn’t know what to expect. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it but my parents encouraged me to stick it out,” he shared. “Then I started making connections and we did a lot of fun stuff. I learned a lot of things they don’t teach you in school.” A Grade 11 student at Leaside High School, Albert said Rites of Passage taught him a lot about himself and where he comes from.

“After graduation I felt more confident and I have more goals for the future,” he said. “I feel because of this program I’ve seen a lot of people who know where they want to go.” The life-changing program, or process as it’s called, runs twice weekly on Mondays and
Wednesdays for 18 weeks after school at WG’s Victoria Village location at 1533 Victoria Park Ave. at Eglinton Avenue. It also includes retreats outside the city and in some instances trips abroad. Developed in the United States, the Rites of Passage process is modeled on the West
African Akan tradition, which aims to instill leadership in participants by nurturing responsible adulthood, developing a sense of purpose, building a community perspective and fostering resiliency. To do so, facilitators lead discussions and activities that centre
around helping participants develop and nurture their sense of self-respect, self-determination and a responsibility to the community around them. “(Rites of Passage) is a vehicle to engage young people,” said Sipho Kwaku, who brought the program to WG eight years ago and continues to help run it. Kwaku, who also serves as the east end social services agency’s director of employment services, said Rites of Passage is all about reinstilling a sense of pride and dignity in youth of African descent. Paul Osborne, who has been with WG for seven years, is the program’s manager as well as a facilitator. “It’s a great program for youth, especially those from marginalized communities,” he said, adding as a leader he feels a great sense of pride when he sees participants grow from one stage in life to another. “The majority of the more than 100 graduates are doing well and many have come back to help with the program…To this day, many are very close, very connected and they support each other.” WoodGreen recently received a significant, multi-year grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Youth Opportunity Fund and is working to expand Rites of Passage to the Jane/Finch and Jane/Wilson, Don Mills/Steeles and Kingston/Galloway communities by 2018.

NOTICE OF COMPLETION OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY REPORT WILKET CREEK CHANNEL WITHIN WILKET CREEK PARK REHABILITATION STUDY TO ADDRESS EROSION HAZARDS THREATENING INFRASTRUCTURE, GEOMORPHIC SYSTEMS & HABITAT Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), on behalf of the City of Toronto has completed a study to assess the geomorphic systems and habitat of the Wilket Creek subwatershed in developing a long term strategy to address ongoing hazards to municipal lands and infrastructure within Wilket Creek Park as a result of stream erosion. Four Public Information Centers (PICs) were held in order to gather comments and input from stakeholders and members of the public. The first PIC was held on June 29, 2011, the second on December 18, 2013, the third on February 25, 2014 and the fourth on June 5, 2014. The study was completed as a Master Plan under the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process. The Environmental Study Report has been prepared and is available for a 30 day period from February 19, 2015 to March 21, 2015 for review at the Lock Library, 3083 Yonge Street and the North York Civic Centre at 5120 Yonge Street. Interested persons may provide written comments to TRCA within the 30 calendar day period. Police retrieve $75,000 in stolen goods; five charged Five people face charges after police executed a search warrant and recovered more than $75,000 of stolen goods. Police allege that at 6 a.m. Feb. 9 five people were arrested and charged with property-related thefts from a number of department stores in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue area. Margorzata Zakrzewska, 53, of Toronto is charged with theft under $5,000 and possessing property obtained by crime over $5,000.

For the first time in more than a year Metrolinx will provide a public update on efforts to electrify the Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link. The provincial transit planning agency has already promised to convert nearly all of the GO rail network from diesel to electric within a decade. The first step of that transformation is supposed to be UP, but neither Metrolinx nor the Ontario Ministry of Transportation have confirmed when it will happen, or how much it will cost to electrify the fourstop line. Next Tuesday, Metrolinx electrification director Karen Pitre will take part in a question and answer session hosted by the Roncesvalles-Macdonnell Residents Association from 7 to 9 p.m. at Fern Avenue Public School.

A report to the city’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee recommends closing the Allen between Eglinton and Lawrence avenues April 17 to 20 to allow Metrolinx work crews to lift and transport a pair of 81-metre-long machines to east of Eglinton West subway station. The report also recommends closing off Allen between Sheppard and Lawrence on the same weekend for maintenance. The committee will debate the proposed closure at its meeting Monday.

Joe Pennachetti’s long goodbye There must be something liberating in the long goodbye. Just look at Joe Pennachetti, Toronto’s long-suffering and ever-efficient city manager, who agreed to hang around for a few months after his planned retirement to help Mayor John Tory make a budget for 2015. Pennachetti’s been good to his word – directing first one staff budget and then another, once the political realities of provincial-municipal relations became apparent. Last week, Pennachetti delivered that second one with a neat fiscal flourish, forgoing a loan from either province or bank to “borrow” money from Toronto’s own capital investments. The plan raised some eyebrows but got Tory out of a pickle, made by the failure of his fledgling administration to negotiate a good deal with the provincial government to soak up $86 million in lost revenue in time for March. It is unlikely that if Pennachetti were planning on staying longer than a month or

david nickle the city so he would have delivered his third piece of parting advice as he did. Toronto, he said, needs to look at new sources of revenue, and it needs to do it now. The City of Toronto Act is under review, and with strong council support it is possible the province might allow Toronto to find sources of revenue beyond the ones that it has now: specifically, a sales tax. That new source of revenue could make a dramatic difference in the city’s finances – allowing it to deal with its crushing public housing and transit responsibilities, and manage everything else on its own terms. Shelley Carroll, who served as budget chief under former mayor David Miller, is going to bring forward a motion on the plan. Tory, meanwhile, is united with his budget chief Gary
Crawford in thinking it a terrible idea. On Tuesday, Tory told reporters that first he wants to find efficiencies and get money from the federal and provincial government. New revenues should only be considered after all that’s failed. Tory’s nervousness is understandable, but it’s not acceptable. Toronto Council is on its way to approving a budget that is built on short-term profligacy, paid for over time. It’s like raiding your kid’s college fund to get a new car: if you have any hope for pleasant holiday dinners and visitors at the retirement home, you’re going to have to spend the next few years cutting other things you may need – or go get a better job to pay it back in time. Or you could do both – cut back on frills and get some more money. That’s the gist of the parting advice from the guy who knows.

TCAT, with financial support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and in partnership with Toronto Public Health, began its community engagement process in the area two years ago. It heard from residents and those connected to the farm that better and safer pedestrian access to the farm was needed, and that active transportation conditions need to be improved in the area.
