North York’s Toronto Centre for the Arts will merge with the city’s other two civic theatres effective today, Toronto Council has decided. The consolidation of the three theatres – the Toronto Centre for the Arts, the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts and the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts – is a result of more than two years of work by the Theatres Working Group, looking at better ways to govern the three theatres. But the CIBC Pan Am/ Parapan Am Athletics Stadium located at York University’s Keele Campus was intended to be much more than just a state-of-the art facility that can hold up to 12,500 spectators during the Games. York University president Mamdouh Shoukri remarked back in 2012 at the ceremonial groundbreaking event that the

pan am games venue athletics stadium will create a lasting legacy for community members for years to come. Three years later, the $45.5-million stadium is still expected to benefit both York University students and the greater community after the Games are done. “It’s actually going to get a much more extended use,” said Jennifer Myers, director of sport and recreation at York University. While the stadium is currently a fully accessible venue with a Class 1 track suitable for hosting Olympic competi-

tions, Myers said there are plans to add turf after the Pan Am Games, and possibly a dome down the road. That opens up the use of the stadium for other sports such as soccer, and with full broadcasting capabilities already available, the athletics stadium is capable of hosting other major events. Other than set times in the spring and early summer when Athletics Canada intends to use the stadium as a training facility for its high performance athletes, Myers said there will be plenty of opportunities for the community and university students to have access.

“It’s really well designed and it will be able to accommodate a lot of variety,” said Myers. This includes local sports leagues being able to rent out the field or organizations being able to host community festivals. And with the university’s Keele campus being situated near highways 400 and 407 as well as the subway extension from Downsview Station to York under construction, the stadium will draw even more visitors for years to come. “You couldn’t ask for a better location,” she said.

Torch arrives at Mel Lastman Square DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The Pan Am Games flame arrived at Mel Lastman Square to a chorus of cheers and applause from hundreds of spectators yesterday. Previous Canadian Idol winner Eva Avila ran to the celebration square and lit the community cauldron on stage at the North York Civic Centre on Yonge Street with a crowd chanting her name. “It’s such a thrill, such an honour,” the Quebec-raised, Toronto singer-songwriter said. “It’s very emotional and something I’ve never experienced before. When I was asked to be a torchbearer, I couldn’t believe it. It’s such a thrill, especially the last stretch, people cheering me on.” Avila recorded the Spanish version of the 2015 Pan Am/

Avila received the flame from former NBA player and current ESPN analyst Bruce Bowen just outside Mel Lastman Square. Bowen called it an honour to be invited to participate in the Torch Relay. “When I think about torchbearing, I think about the ’96 Olympics in Atlanta where Muhammad Ali lit the torch. That’s the vision I’ve had for a long time,” he said. “Now, to be able to participate in something like that, I’m thrilled.” Mom Laura Gamboa and her five- and three-year-old boys, just missed the cauldron lighting by a few minutes, but their efforts to get to the celebration were redeemed

when Avila posed with them for a photo after she lit the cauldron. “It was amazing,” Gamboa said, adding she wanted her sons to witness how amazing an experience the Games can be. Wednesday was a busy day for the torch. The 39th day of the Torch Relay started in northern Etobicoke at North Albion Collegiate Institute, then made a stop at Driftwood Community Recreation Centre before arriving at Mel Lastman Square at 12:30 p.m. A large crowd came out to the event, where there were free games and activities geared toward children, music performances and more. North York traffic guide for Pan Am Games DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com North York commuters should brace themselves for heavier volumes of traffic on local roadways, highways and on transit during the Pan Am Games, which run July 10 to 26. The province anticipates approximately 250,000 visitors will come to Ontario for the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games (Aug. 7 to 15), most of whom will be in the Greater Toronto Area. Games officials are asking anyone who can avoid driving at heavy traffic periods to do so, such as by working from home, changing their shift time to off-peak hours, or taking transit. Officials hope for a 20 per cent reduction in local traffic, to make way for Pan Am Games-related traffic. A 20 per cent traffic reduction is needed to maintain near-normal commute times, officials said. traffic around York U. N o r t h Yo r k ’s Yo r k University is the site of two Games venues, so people should expect heavier volumes near the campus. The area around the Canadian Tennis Centre (1 Shoreham Dr.) will see heavier traffic volume July 10 to 16 during tennis events, while the nearby CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium (Ian MacDonald BoulevardOttawa Road) will experience heavier traffic July 21 to 25, Aug. 7, and Aug. 10 to 14. On the highways, North York drivers should anticipate the greatest traffic volume increase on the Don Valley Parkway. Games officials predict a best-case scenario of an added two minutes to commute times headed north and one minute going south. The worst-case scenario,

pan am games traffic however, adds 15 minutes going north and 10 minutes heading south. Going past the DVP and onto Hwy. 404, the situation improves. The stretch from Hwy. 401 to Hwy. 407 should see minimal changes, up to an extra one minute of travel in a best-case scenario. A worstcase scenario prediction anticipates an added three minutes headed north and one minute traveling south. HOV lanes To help ensure athletes and Games officials can get to their destinations, the province has installed temporary high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes on major highways in Toronto and neighbouring municipalities. This includes Hwy. 404 and the Don Valley Parkway in North York. Hwy. 401 drivers are spared the lanes through the North York stretch. Hwy. 401 has HOV lanes west of Hwy. 427 and east of Warden Avenue. The HOV lanes rules are in effect until Aug. 18 from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. HOV lanes take up one lane of existing traffic lanes in each direction. There will also be traffic changes around the two Games venues until Aug. 27 around York University, with heaviest traffic from now until July 26. he Pan Am Games are here and they are taking place right now, so it’s time for Torontonians to stop complaining and start showing off our great city to the rest of the world. We all need to look beyond the personal inconvenience and embrace the bigger picture. Yes, those HOV lanes are annoying but it will only be for a short period of time. The Games are bringing a lot of positives both economically and culturally. Let’s celebrate that. In today’s edition we’re looking at the Pan Am Games’ impact on businesses, sports groups and people in our communities. One of those positives was this weekend’s celebration on the Prince Edward Viaduct that saw the Pan Games Torch Relay ignite a our view Am community cauldron and the lighting up of the Luminous Veil. The Share your lighting on the veil is one of the permanent legacies brought support and many about by the Games which also excitement include a number of world-class athletic facilities. Also, athletes are thrilled to have the opportunity to show their stuff for hometown fans. It’s a rare opportunity for them, and one they will cherish. As Toronto sports fans, we need to share their excitement and show our support for our athletes. As Torontonians we should also be embracing the chance to show those visiting from the 41 countries competing in the Pan Am Games that we are a great city in which to live, work and play. The Toronto Region Board of Trade looks at the Games as a chance to further establish the city as epicentre of global business. “From the business community’s perspective, we have 350,000 people coming into the GTA. These are folks who if they like what they see, will be coming back, and telling their friends. So hopefully we can look at this as a point in time where we can really showcase what we’ve got,” said TRBOT president Janet De Silva. With athletic events now underway, there’s plenty of enthusiasm from volunteers and athletes. And if sports isn’t your thing, there’s no end of social and cultural events to enjoy during the Games. Dealing with Pan Am gridlock a step at a time I wish I could tell you I had a gold medal solution on how to deal with the inevitable Pan Am Games gridlock, but the best I could come up with is just grin and bear it. I get the feeling that won’t get me in the running for the silver either. Or bronze. Or tin for that matter. But hey, that’s my game plan and I’m sticking to it. traffic angst With Friday night’s opening ceremonies just a hop, skip and a jump away and traffic angst already reaching a fever pitch, all I know is carpooling with co-workers isn’t going to make it disappear. Nor is SUVpooling. Nor rickshawpooling. Nor is Pan An Games office pooling of any kind. That includes being picked up by the corporate limo. Or the corporate helicopter. Or the corporate blimp.

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Everybody hopping on public transit isn’t the answer, either. But I’m not going to lose any sleep over the impending congestion. We all knew the moment it was announced Toronto had been awarded the Games that getting around wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. So I’ve decided to do the next best thing. I’ll make it a walk in the ravine instead. With a walk across a bridge thrown in, and a walk through a field, a walk on a front lawn or two, a walk down several alleys, a walk on the sidewalk and a walk through an occasional parking lot, too. Wherever it takes me and whatever it takes to get there, I’m walking to work during the Games, sports fans. Nothing’s going to stand in my way.

You won’t hear me joining in the expected road rage chorus no matter how chaotic things get on our streets, highways and byways. I’m going to let my feet do all the talking. making it fun Who says getting there is half the fun? I’m going to make it all the fun. My strategy is to take a different route every day of the Games. What’s more, I’m going to make things up as I go along. So that means you could see me head off the beaten path one day, then head back on the beaten path the next. It’ll all depend on my mood. I might take the underpass or the overpass. Or I could go under the overpass or over the underpass. I may go up hill and down dale or just as easily go up dale and down hill. You never know. I might stop at the junction or just as easily start

at the junction. Or I may just avoid the junction all together. I could travel hither, thither and yon, or yon, thither and hither. Or vice versa. Or versa vice. And what if I come across two roads diverging in a yellow wood, you ask? No sweat. I’m not going to worry about which one to choose. Or which is less travelled than the other. I plan to take both. Many times. Not even a fork in the road will wipe the smile off my face. If I come across one, I’ll scoop up that spoilsport without even skipping a beat and recycle it along the way for good measure. Same goes for a knife and spoon. Breaking up really is hard to do Those of us who’ve been in and around Toronto and its constituent municipalities the last couple of decades probably don’t need the Fraser Institute to tell us what terrible problems amalgamation caused. Before 1998, Toronto was six cities: North York and Scarborough and Etobicoke sprawling to the north and east and west, the tiny municipalities of East York and York huddling on the edge of old, urban Toronto. When then-premier Mike Harris and his municipal affairs minister Al Leach announced plans to amalgamate us all, everyone in Toronto not connected with the governing Progressive Conservative party knew instinctively it was a bad idea. It wouldn’t save money. It would make governing these cities of neighbourhoods more difficult, not easier. It would, we were sure, be largely unpleasant. We were, in the main, right. And now the Fraser Institute, in a study cutely subtitled

david nickle the city “Breaking up is hard to do,” suggests the biggest reason for Toronto to stay together is precisely for that reason: re-establishing Toronto’s old municipal boundaries, or indeed new ones that might be more rational from a 21st century perspective, would be a big job. The question is, do the problems Toronto has now warrant that kind of work? If we were talking a year ago in the dying days of the Rob Ford administration it would be an easy one to answer. The shotgun marriage of municipalities had descended to such a dysfunctional state that suburban Toronto had elected Ford to its top job. And although the mayoralty has passed to steadier hands, it is too soon to say whether the wounds of amalgamation have significantly healed. It is probably also too soon to say that they haven’t healed,

or that they won’t. But as the Fraser Institute’s report notes, other municipalities have managed the split, and Toronto might too. If we were to do so, best not follow the example of Montreal, which ended up with a jumble of small municipalities and a new regional government. We would need some other model that took the lessons of history and the realities of the present into account. In the meantime, it might also be healthy to recognize that there exists the simple possibility of separation: that the bike-riding, latte-sipping denizens of the downtown core might be able to debate in a different room from the suburban, fiscal conservatives of the old suburban communities, and each might elect a mayor according to their needs and aspirations. Sometimes, there’s nothing to spur compromise in a relationship like the serious contemplation of its end.

Its future was once in doubt, now Bike Share Toronto has announced plans to expand its operations. The once cash-strapped bike share program that was handed over to the Toronto Parking Authority last year now has 4,000 members. This week it announced Metrolinx will contribute $5 million to double the bike share’s offerings to 2,000 bikes and 160 docking stations by the end of 2016. Under the terms of the deal, the new rides will appear not just in Toronto but in other Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area municipalities where there are currently no bike share stations.

Artists paint salute to Pan Am athletes See the exhibit until July 28 in North York DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Portrait Society of Canada founder and chair Veronica Kvassetskaia-Tsyglan says athletes and artists are not so different, though sports have historically been more popular than arts in Canada. Now, the organization, along with North York Arts, is bringing the two together in an exhibit that will be displayed at the Toronto Centre for the Arts as part of the sixth annual Cultura Festival. “Artists and sports men and women have a very similar life. They’re busy creating, achieving goals,” the North York portrait artist said. “With this exhibit we’d like to show we’re here and we paint these portraits and we contribute. The artists are ready to achieve goals and we’re the same citizens and we’re building the community with power and sense of purpose.” The exhibit, Canadian Athletes: A Flame within History, will be open until July 28 in the lower gallery. It features 24 portraits of Canadian athletes by 12 portrait artists. The subjects of the portraits include athletes who are participating in the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games or past sporting events, including Olympics and Pan Am Games.

pan am games entertainment The Portrait Society has done this in the past, including during the 2010 Olympics, but with little financial support. Now, with support from the city and the province, the art gallery in North York, and as part of a popular festival in the community, the society hopes for a successful show. Kvassetskaia-Tsyglan hopes the exhibit helps display Canadian pride, fosters artistic creativity and inspires Canadians to cheer on their athletes. She will have four of her own portraits in the show. The portraits are of Olympic triathlete Simon Whitfield, gymnastic champion Patricia Bezzubenko, Pan Am judo champion Sasha Mehmedovic, and heptathlon silver medalist at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games and gold medalist at the 2007 Pan Am Games Jessica Zelinka. Kvassetskaia-Tsyglan called portraiture a unique and interesting form of art. “I can only compare it to opera singing,” she said. “Everybody can sing, but just some can sing opera. Portraiture is the same. Everybody can paint, but just a few can do portraits. It’s a very unique and specific form of art. It’s just people with a passion who can do this.” The opening reception for the exhibit was last Saturday. The centre is at 5040 Yonge St.

Growing up, Shanice DennisRussell planned to have a career in interior design. But something changed after the Weston Road and Finch Avenue resident got into sports – namely flag football and volleyball – while attending Richview Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke. It was then she turned more towards athletics, and has worked for a multitude of sports organizations and events in hopes of landing her dream job as an events and games day co-ordinator for the New York Jets. And Dennis-Russell will gain even more sporting experience when she volunteers with the press operations crew for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games July 10 to 26. “I’m super happy it’s in Toronto,” she said of the Games. “I love Toronto and I’m excited for other people around the world.” A sports enthusiast who loves both watching and participating in athletics, DennisRussell has worked for the Ottawa Redblacks, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Argonauts, and Honda Indy. Wanting to gain as much experience as possible in all aspects of the sports business, she decided to apply as a volunteer for the Pan Am Games. After filling out an online application, she was placed with the press operations crew at Exhibition Stadium, where duties will include, among others, directing athletes to media, she said. “It worked out well,” Dennis-Russell said of where she is stationed. “I wanted to do something with media relations.”

She eventually hopes to move to New York to work for her favourite football team, the New York Jets. She had an interview with the organization in April, but couldn’t get a work visa in time for the start date, she said. In the meantime, she’s racking up experience in the sports world and plans to re-apply with the Jets in

two years. As for the Pan Am Games, the Ottawa born, Toronto raised Dennis-Russell said she’s hoping to catch a beach volleyball event and share her passion for sports. “I am excited to bring my

enthusiasm and charisma to this role and spread my infectious personality to everyone I come in contact with,” she said.

But on the other, once the hoopla is over, the focus shifts to if the venues built specifically for the events are attracting new tenants and if costs have been recouped,

Some might argue the $2.5-billion cost of the Games, which will include new and upgraded venues and facilities in Ontario built specifi-

cally for the large sporting event, will never be recouped and the money should have been put to better use, like constructing community centres, he said. “One side will suggest it’s not a good investment,” Pilon said, noting the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics was one of very few profitable mega sporting events. “The facilities will be underutilized. But if the public is fully apprised of the costs and benefits and have no prob-

lem with public money being spent, it’s hard to make the argument the Games weren’t successful. The question is, does the success match the cost to the community as a whole? Once the event is over, the focus on it disappears, the bills come due. We’re told the facilities will be put to use in the future and will be paid off, but will they be? We shouldn’t be basing this on hope.”

Crawford, a Scarborough-Southwest councillor, will chair the

board. Filion, who has dealt with the problem of making the Toronto Centre for the Arts functional since amalgamation, said the solution was the best possible. He noted that in the Ford administration, the risk was real that the arts centre could simply be sold off. “We were talking about shutting down theatres or selling off theatres, the boards were shell shocked and ducking for cover,” he said. “Now we have a path forward that I think will really make these three buildings hum.”

my time with the pan am torch T he energy inside the Regent Park Aquatic Centre was heating up as the 19 Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games torchbearers – myself included – prepared for the relay Monday, July 6. As an employee of Metroland Media Toronto, a signature supporter of the Torch Relay, I had the honour of being selected as one of five company torchbearers to run a 200-metre segment in the days leading up to the start of the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. After finding out in March I was selected, I eagerly awaited being part of a once-in-lifetime experience as Toronto geared up to host the large sporting events. We torchbearers arrived at the Dundas and Sumach streets aquatic centre several hours before our start time to change into our uniforms, familiarize ourselves with how to hold the 65-centimetre long, 1.2-kilogram aluminum torch, and do some fun stretches as we chit-chatted and got to know one another. Before we knew it, it was time to head outside and onto Dundas Street for some group shots (and pictures with Pachi, the Games’ mascot) before we boarded a bus which would drop us off at our various start locations.

It was around this time some people’s nerves started to kick in, once they saw the large convoy of police and media vehicles which would surround us. But there was also a lot of excitement inside the small shuttle, and a smile seemed to be permanently marked on each face. With loud cheers from my fellow torchbearers, I exited the bus at my starting point on Gerrard Street, just east of Sackville Street. There weren’t a lot of on-lookers in the area, but I did get some curious looks from passing motorists. While I waited the minute or two before my segment started, I was surprised by just how uncharacteristically calm I was. I have a bad habit of over-thinking things, and shockingly no thoughts were running through my mind. Finally, the moment arrived when

the flame from Brynn Metherell’s torch would light mine. This was the same flame lit May 25 during a traditional ceremony in Teotihuacan,

Mexico at the Pyramid of the Sun before touching down in Toronto May 30 for the start of the 41 day Torch Relay. After high-fiving Metherell, it was my turn to bask in the 30-degree heat as I slowly jogged along Gerrard Street to Wakely Lane, police flanked around me. Pedestrians and I waved at each other, and I made sure to smile and wave at westbound passing motorists, some of whom slowed down to snap pictures. I tried my best to take in the moment (and not drop the torch, as we were told it would be a first), knowing it was going to be over in a flash. Before I knew it, the cowbells (courtesy of Metroland Media) my parents and boyfriend were ringing could be heard, and the green foam flames (again, courtesy of Metroland) they either waved or wore on their head could be seen. The flame from my torch then lit Hana Klimczak’s, my flame was turned off, and my time as a Pan Am Games torchbearer had come to an end. But the memory will last a lifetime.

Kailah Macri ready to roll at Toronto 2015 York U. grad to represent Canada in roller figure skating FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Kailah Macri glides on skates around the rink in her dress and leggings, executing jumps and spins with precision. But ice is not under the recent York University graduate’s skates. The 24-year-old Whitby resident is a roller figure skater, and Canada’s only representative in the littleknown sport at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games this month. “People think it’s roller derby, and it’s not,” she said. “It’s the summer version of ice skating.” Macri, who recently graduated from York with a bachelor of science degree in kinesiology, was in the dark about her sport until age nine, when her best friend suggested she come out to watch her practice. A natural, Macri found herself at her first World Championships

pan am games athlete four years later at age 13, and would go on to become a multiple national champion with seven World Championships under her roller skates. Her last major competition was the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she placed fifth. She retired shortly after the Games, choosing to focus on school, but laced up her skates in December to start training for a chance at competing in the Pan Am Games in Toronto. “Part of me knew I would be coming back for the Games,” she said. She headed to Calgary, Alberta in May for a tryout in an effort to secure Canada’s lone spot for one female roller figure skater in the Pan Am Games – Canada could have also sent one male, but didn’t have any competitors – and Macri rolled away as the country’s representative. “I’m pretty excited about it,” she said of the Games. “A medal would be nice. I’ve skated against all these

girls and (Argentina’s Giselle Soler) is my biggest competition.” Splitting her six-day-a-week training between Scooter’s Roller Palace in Mississauga and a facility in Oshawa, Macri said she’s feeling stronger and her triple jumps are “better than they’ve ever been.” “I have a few new triples and new combinations,” she said of her program. And while she’s debating about competing in September’s World Championships in Colombia, she does know she’d like to get into the coaching side of the sport and apply to medical school. She’s also confident she likely won’t be skating anymore if roller sports makes it into the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The sport is one of eight up for consideration, and Tokyo organizers will decide in September which sports to propose to the International Olympic Committee for inclusion. The final decision will be made in 2016. “I’d like to help increase awareness (of roller figure skating),” Macri said. “Roller skating has gotten a lot of media attention (leading up to the

Committee and Rugby Canada announced the 12 men’s rugby sevens athletes who will compete in the Toronto Pan Am Games. The 2015 Games will mark only the second time the sport is part of the Games. Rugby sevens made its debut at the 2011 Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, where Canada won gold. The rugby competitions run July 11 and 12 at Exhibition Stadium.
