Elisabeth Linton is not interested in personal recognition

for the work she does as director of The Sanfilippo Children’s Research Foundation. But if shining the spotlight on the North York resident will help bring awareness to her foundation and a cure for her daughter, Elisa, who suffers from the disorder, Linton is more than

happy for the attention. The mother of three is one of 20 finalists for Walmart’s Mom of the Year Award. “I was quite humbled and very surprised,” Linton said. “A neighbour and a friend nominated me, and I had to choose between the two (to be

the official nominator). I went with the friend because she had the more accurate write-up.” Linton was also nominated last year, but didn’t make it through to where she is now, she said. The contest started last year >>>AWARD, page 2

A three-year-old North York girl with severe disabilities won’t get the therapy she desperately needs in Chile this fall after a fundraising campaign for her fell far short of its goal. But Mia Somogyi’s mother, Andrea Toth, is thrilled with the support her daughter has received and is vowing to continue raising money so the family can travel to the South American country next spring for Mia’s treatment. “Every little bit helps and we are very grateful for the people who donated and believe in Mia,” said Toth, whose campaign raised less than four per cent of its goal. “I’m not disappointed. I’m actually happy.” Toth and her husband, Janos Somogyi, launched a fundraising campaign on the crowdfunding website Indiegogo with hopes of raising $32,000. >>>PARENTS, page 8

Award nominee works tirelessly for her family >>>from page 1 to celebrate “amazing mothers across the country,” according to Walmart Canada. Almost 17,000 stories were submitted. This year, the Top 20 finalists will be narrowed down to eight finalists. One finalist will be chosen by online voting, with the other seven selected by a committee. Voting closes Thursday, Aug. 1, and the eight finalists will be announced around Aug. 6. The winner will be chosen at a red carpet dinner in Toronto around Oct. 6. The Mom of the Year will receive a $100,000 donation to the cause or charity of her choice; $10,000 for herself; a day of pampering in Toronto and a seat on next year’s selection committee. title. How do you pick one winner? There are so many amazing moms out there. Getting to the final 20 is an opportunity for me to share my journey at being a mom.” Linton’s daughter, Elisa, was progressing normally until age four,

when she began to develop speech problems. Doctors at The Hospital for Sick Children diagnosed the little girl with Sanfilippo syndrome, a rare recessive autosomal genetic disease and one of seven mucopolysaccharide disorders. It occurs in about one

in 24,000 births. Children with Sanfilippo syndrome are missing an essential enzyme that breaks down sugars, resulting in a build-up of them in the brain and other organs, ultimately stopping development. Loss of speech typically occurs by age seven, and by age 10 sufferers are generally confined to a wheelchair, then bedridden by 14. The decline will be accompanied by hyperactivity, sleep disorders, mental regression and dementia, and will finally lead to an early death. There is not currently treatment or a cure. Most children do not live past their early teens. Now 19, Elisa can no longer speak or walk and can’t feed herself, Linton said. Noting very little research into Sanfilippo syndrome has been done, Linton and her husband, Randall, decided to start up The Sanfilippo Children’s Research Foundation 14 years ago. To date, $4.5 million has been raised, with 96 per cent of the money going to research and four per cent towards overhead costs.

Sentencing in Sunrise Propane explosion set for Dec. 9 Sentencing in Downsview’s deadly Sunrise Propane explosion almost five years ago has been set for Dec. 9. The company and directors Shay Ben-Moshe and Valery Belahov were found guilty last month of several provincial workplace safety and environmental protection charges. Sunrise employee Parminder Saini, 25, was killed in the Aug. 10, 2008 explosion when vapours ignited as propane was being transferred from truck to truck. District fire chief Bob Leek

died while responding to the blast. About 12,000 residents had to be evacuated from their homes. Madame Justice Leslie Chapin of the Ontario Court of Justice delivered her guilty ruling on the provincial charges Thursday, June 27. A government lawyer had accused Sunrise of being negligent in its environmental protection practices and its training of Saini. A defence lawyer disagreed, arguing Saini had been properly trained.

Ryan Gotesman knew he achieved a high average, but had no idea he tied for the top scholar in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) this year. With an admitted passion and thirst for knowledge, the 18-year-old William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute student, along with fellow Mackenzie student Geoffrey Yu, earned an average of 99.7 per cent. “It came as a big surprise,” he said. “It felt good.” Gotesman and Yu, along with their parents and principal Marcia Diakun, discussed their success at a media event outside the Wilson Heights Boulevard and Sheppard Avenue school last Thursday. With a love of math and science, and an emphasis on calculus, Gotesman said he spends three to four hours a day studying, unless a project is due. Then it’s more like four to five hours. “I try to manage my time well,” he said. Gotesman, who graduated Grade 12 and plans to study health sciences at McMaster University in the fall, doesn’t spend all his time buried in the books. An art and music lover, the teen attends concerts and art galleries regularly. And when he’s not doing that, he can be found playing a variety of sports, including badminton and basketball.

Geoffrey Yu, left, and Ryan Gotesman are the Toronto District School Board’s top two scholars with identical averages of 99.7 per cent.

A member of Mackenzie’s computer science club, Gotesman has competed in numerous math and science competitions, finishing several times in the top one per cent, he said. After studying hard last year, he plans to spend the summer reading and experimenting with 3D modelling for Androids or iPhones. “I’m really honoured to be the TDSB’s top scholar and I couldn’t have done it without the support of my parents and teachers,” he said. G o t e s m a n’s p a re n t s, Alexander and Galina, said they were very proud of their son, who has always been a hard worker. “At an early age we knew he was extremely capable,” Galina said. Yu, who tied with Gotesman, said he most enjoys physics, computer science and calculus and plans to study software

engineering at the University of Waterloo in September. “I did my best, but I didn’t aim for this,” he said of receiving top marks. “I didn’t expect it. It’s pretty humbling and a really great honour.” Aside from watching television, the 18-year-old Grade 12 graduate indulges in personal projects, including working on Android and web apps, he said. The former head photographer of the yearbook club, Yu co-founded an aviation and train operations club at the school, noting a fascination with flight simulation. And before he starts postsecondary studies in the fall, Yu plans to visit his grandparents in China in August. His father, Rui Yu, said he knew his only child was doing well in school, but not this well. “I was surprised and proud,” he said of his son’s high scores.

ur city is a bustling place where the day-today grind can take a toll. For those looking for a little back-to-nature respite, we’ve got the perfect adventure waiting for you, just steps away from your front door. In this edition’s special feature, we highlight local hiking trails and others across the city where people can go to spot wildlife, keep active, socialize and reenergize. Other stories we’ve collected online will take you butterfly watching along the Leslie Street Spit, jogging through the ravines of the Don River and exploring the ecosystems of the 250-acre Humber Arboretum in north Etobicoke. our view There’s a surprising number of hiking and walking trails in Get close to our city. There are so many, we list them all within our nature in your couldn’t feature. neighbourhood When you walk some of them it’s easy to forget you’re in the middle of a bustling urban centre – like when you’re following the winding trails through the tall, dense forests of High Park. Others have landmark reminders, like the condo tower that looms over the meadowland of the Humber Arboretum. But all, some would suggest, have the power to refresh the spirit. The federal non-profit group Turtlefeather True Nature uses outings along these trails to help women who have experienced abuse gain confidence and reduce stress. It’s also a welcome outlet for groups like the Metro Toronto Fitness Club, who has been taking to the trails for years (nearly 50 in this case), seeking not only outdoor activity but new friendships. The group meets weekly for social walks and organizes social activities on a regular basis. Though one wouldn’t normally associate hiking and city life, these protected green spaces prove the two can compliment one another and we hope our feature will prove to our readers that hiking is accessible here in our communities. So pack a lunch, grab the sunscreen (and bug spray) and head out on your own trail adventure. These green spaces provide a natural oasis that can’t be fully appreciated until you’re there. Take time for yourself, or bring the family and discover the great outdoors right in your backyard.

How not to plan and build transit It looks like we’re planning and financing the Scarborough subway extension the same way we did for the Spadina subway extension. Toronto’s procedure isn’t found in textbooks. Maybe it ought to be, under a section on how not to plan and build transit. Neither subway extension started with professional justification. For the Spadina subway extension, once it passes York University, there is sparse population, little development and the route is well served by highways. Over in Scarborough, professionals have been consistent in advising that light rapid transit will serve more people less expensively. In both cases, staff pointed to higher priorities, some of which have been needed for decades. Never mind. Both subway extensions sprang from the same justification: a basic need to get re-elected. In the case of Spadina, the provincial Liberals were down

david soknacki beyond the headlines in the polls, and would soon be facing the electorate. With the Scarborough extension, they wish to assure the election of their candidate in a byelection. Provincial financing strategy is basically the same. Subways will be provided if the provincial government wins. When the Spadina subway extension was under consideration, the federal Conservatives governed a minority parliament. Although their principles and the constitution advised them not to meddle in provincial matters, the Conservatives found the prospect of suburban seats tempting. Practical considerations won, the subway was funded, and Conservatives gained 16 seats. There are similarities this time. Prior to calling a Scarborough byelection, the provincial Liberals were ada-

mant that council had prioritized a non-subway project. In any case, they said there was no more funding. After the writ dropped, money was found, as was flexibility. If polls said electors wanted a subway, the province would not object. Ministers now joined local MPPs in demanding a subway. Once again the province told the public the project required a substantial contribution from the federal government. But the situation in Ottawa is different this time. The Conservatives hold a majority government. Although the mayor seems to be on the best personal terms with the prime minister and finance minister, federal electoral considerations take precedence. For Ottawa, it is a question of what their investment of about $400 millions buys. Indecision or deliberate delay has its own impacts. If the federal government does not finance the Scarborough subway extension, the provin-

cial Liberals cannot use the announcement in the general provincial election expected within a year. On the other hand, a lack of federal funding will frustrate the mayor. Taxpayers and residents alike will find delaying building transit costly. Already tens of millions have been invested, or perhaps now wasted, in the light rapid transit option. Should the project become a subway extension there will be the need for new studies and re-approvals. A project that has been on the books for years, and which commuters desperately need, has been deferred again. Even beyond the selfcentred politics, and wasted dollars, two similar examples show how subway projects are prioritized and funded in Toronto. These cases are beginning to look like textbook examples of how not to build transit. David Soknacki is a former City of Toronto councillor and budget chief. Contact him at www.soknacki.com

Council rebuffs taxpayers’ coalition proposal for more immediate reduction in numbers Showdown at Ontario Municipal Board a possibility DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com A petition from the Toronto Ta x p a y e r s C o a l i t i o n demanding that city council immediately reduce its size by half was rebuffed by council. In doing so, it may have set the stage for a battle at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) that could see voters elect a 25-member council as early as next year. “We’ve been talking about

going to the OMB, we’re prepared to do so, and we’re going to consider everything that happened today,” said Matthew McGuire, president of the organization that he claims represents between 3,000 and 4,000 Toronto taxpayers. The group, which was formed following the 2010 municipal election, has been a consistent advocate for many of the policies supported by Mayor Rob Ford, including the Sheppard subway plan. When last month Toronto council supported going forward with a process to redraw ward boundaries in time for the 2018 election, the group launched a petition, demanding the move happen sooner and that council cut its membership in half.

The petition carries weight, because the City of Toronto Act includes a provision allowing a petition of 500 electors to force a municipality to vote on their proposal for redrawn electoral boundaries.

matter can go to the OMB, and any decision they make can also be appealed there. Councillors debated the matter July 18, and voted 25-13 to deny the request. Ford urged councillors to approve the smaller council. “I truly believe that we must do what the taxpayers want,” Ford said. “They want less politicians and more action.” Ford suggested the move would be “risky” for councillors to support, because “you’re going to run against an incumbent.” His brother, Councillor Doug Ford, took matters a step further and accused councillors opposing the immediate reduction in the size of council of simply attempting to protect their own jobs. “It’s not about working

for the people – it’s about working for themselves,” Ford said. “It goes across all political stripes.” As he finished, however, he noted, “I got all the lefties chirping behind me, folks, they want to get that gravy train going again.” Other councillors, however, pointed out the process council had set in place would do the same job. And many of them suggested Torontonians wouldn’t be well served by fewer representatives. “You can reduce politicians,” said Trinity-Spadina Councillor Adam Vaughan. “Keep reducing ’til you get to one. Lots of countries do that. It’s called dictatorship.” Do you feel the size of city council should be reduced? Email your thoughts to nym@ insidetoronto.com

Parents hope to take Mia to Chile for medical treatment >>>from page 1 The campaign raised US$1,235. After deductions, the family, who lives in an apartment in Flemingdon Park, received $1,060 to put toward Mia’s care. “Every little bit helps. It’s $1,000 towards the goal,” Toth said. “I’m really, really, really thankful to everyone who contributed.” The money was to have paid for medical care and travel expenses this fall and next spring for Mia to be treated by physiotherapist Ramon Cuevas, who, 40 years ago, developed Cuevas Medek Exercises (CME), a treatment used to develop gross motor skills in babies and children at risk of delay through, for example, premature birth, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy or brain injuries. Mia suffered severe brain injuries during a traumatic birth that deprived her of

oxygen during the final 45 minutes of her birth, leaving her with many serious disabilities. But she made huge strides in her development after

receiving care from Cuevas for five weeks last fall. Ideally, her parents want Mia to receive treatment from Cuevas twice a year until she is able to walk, saying critical development happens in children before the age of seven. Because the campaign only raised a fraction of its goal, the family will forego taking Mia to Chile this fall, Toth said. “Even if I stand on my head, I won’t come up with the money for October,” she said. However, she is now focused on raising money so the family can take Mia for care next spring. A friend has offered to put on a comedy show with all proceeds going to Mia’s treatment. Toth is hoping someone will donate the use of a venue able to hold more than 100 people.

For the first time this year, mosquitoes in Toronto have tested positive for West Nile virus, the public health department announced yesterday. The public is reminded to take precautions,” she said, adding public health monitors 43 mosquito traps across Toronto on a weekly basis. There have been no reported human cases of the virus in Toronto this year, Pacheco said. In 2012, there were 100 positive mosquito pools and 94 human cases. Ross Lord Park to learning about local historical sites.

While the club enjoys activities inside and outside Toronto, North York trails offer access to the great outdoors close to home, Kay said. “Within minutes, you can be enjoying nature at its best,” he said. “We are fortunate to have deep ravines cutting through our neighbourhoods. With little effort, we can be surrounded by the sounds of birds, little mammals and rustling leaves. The noise of traffic has disappeared.” Members of the Metro Toronto Fitness Club have been meeting every Sunday morning since 1964 to run or walk the trails of North York, regardless of extreme heat alerts, raging blizzards or any weather in between. “People are really keen and they come winter and summer. failed to meet one Sunday since the club started,” said board member Edie Tisch, who has served as manager, vice-president and social convenor during her 30-plus years with the club. “Somebody is always there. It’s a tradition that no Sundays are missed. We’re dedicated. Not everybody comes every Sunday, but there are always people who come. That’s amazing.” Tisch, a North York resident for 29 years before moving to mid-town Toronto about 14 years ago, recalled one Sunday morning when a

snow storm prevented her from getting her car out of the driveway. Rather than put her feet up, she walked from her home to the club’s home base, at the pavilion at Wilket Creek and Sunnybrook Park at Eglinton Avenue and Leslie Street, to join her fellow club members. Tisch wasn’t disappointed when she arrived. Another 15 or so hardy souls also showed up. During a stroll through the park last week during an extreme heat alert, Tisch explained the club has evolved over time from its early days as a running club for people older than 40 to today’s group for runners, walkers and pole walkers of all ages. Much of the club’s appeal is its camaraderie and social activities, including the weekly “social mile” where

members share jokes and stories, barbecues, the Egg Nog Jog holiday event and dinner/dances, including one planned for next May to mark the club’s 50th anniversary. Members love the weekly hikes, which begin at Sunnybrook Park and then follow any number of routes such as through Edwards Gardens or over to the Ontario Science Centre, said Tisch, adding the club now meets during the winter at Banbury Community Centre. “(This is) a beautiful area, all the trees and the wonderful greenery. It’s really something that you don’t find everywhere,” said Tisch, a long-time volunteer with a number of organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. >>>LOOKING, page 17

Looking to nature for healing, revival and relaxation >>>from page 16 Lesley Blackmore is the founder and executive director of Turtlefeather True Nature, a federal not-for-profit organization that helps women who have experienced abuse heal through encounters with nature. Through its Turtlefeather: Women in Nature program, participants “are introduced to the wonders of spending time in nature while improving their outdoor skills, increasing confidence and reducing stress,” she said in an email. “It is our hope that through nature experiences, working in conjunction with other agencies, we can help stop the abusive cycle from continuing. The natural environment is a catalyst for exploring personal fears, facing challenges, and decreasing or eliminating self-imposed limitations. Women can’t help but feel good and powerful when immersed in the beauty and mystery of nature.” Among Blackmore’s favourite walks

are the trails at G. Ross Lord Park and the Forest Valley Outdoor Education Centre southwest of Finch Avenue and Bathurst Street. “It’s a little piece of wilderness in the city; I have seen large adult buck deer running through the fields. There are a variety of areas to explore from river front trails, wooded areas and of course open fields,” she said. “Wilderness/nature outings can refresh your spirit, allow you to reconnect with yourself, reflect on your needs, revive your power to create and enable you to relax and tune into the natural rhythm of the world around.” For information about trails, visit the Ontario Trails Council at www. ontariotrails.on.ca GO ONLINE to read more about hiking in the city: bit.ly/hikingTO

This month you’ll meet Sadie, a shy yet loyal little chihuahua, and Willy, a handsome, affectionate cat. Sadie is a nine-year-old spayed female chihuahua weighing in at about 12 pounds. Sadly, her original owner had to go into assisted care and Sadie could not go with her. She is in foster care with Tiny Paws Dog Rescue where she gets lots of cuddles and belly rubs from her devoted foster mom and dad. Although Sadie lives with other dogs, she much prefers the companionship of humans and is always close by. She gets excited when dinner is being served and is learning, through gentle training reminders, that sitting politely and being patient is more lady-like. She has also learned to sit pretty for treats. Sadie loves her walks and is getting better at going for car rides, but is still a bit anxious. She is a shy gal and would be happiest as an only dog, but would do fine with a feline friend. Her ideal home would be a quiet one with someone who is retired or works from home. She is not a fan of too much excitement or loud noises; she prefers a life of serenity. If you are interested in adopting or knowing more about Sadie, email Tiny Paws Dog Rescue at adoptions.tpdrc@gmail.com, visit their website at www. tpdrc.ca or call 1-800-7748315 A filmmaker friend of mine refers to Willy as the George Clooney of cats: “Salt and pepper hair, extremely handsome, confident, slightly mischievous and affectionate, but on his own terms.”

lorraine houston critter chatter Willy, who is an adult domestic short-haired cat in the care of Urban Cat Relief, loves to watch the world from his scenic window view and play with his toys. He enjoys listening to music and relaxing in his doughnut bed or his cardboard cat lounger. He also likes to sleep on the bed if he’s allowed – and really, who would kick George out of bed? Willy knows the command for ‘sit’ and will sit pretty for a treat. He also knows the ‘come’ command (of course, expecting a treat when he arrives). Willy is completely vetted, neutered, up-to-date

with vaccines and microchipped, however he tested positive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) but has a long and healthy life ahead of him. FIV is not curable, but is a manageable. Urban Cat Relief is happy to send a free e-book that fully explains FIV or put potential adopters in touch with their veterinarian. If you would like a George Clooney of your own, contact Urban Cat Relief at roz. ucrcats@live.ca, visit their website at www.ucrcats.com or call 647-716-2287 and ask about Willy. Lorraine Houston is director of Speaking of Dogs, an organization devoted to education, outreach and rescue. Her column appears the last Thursday of every month. Contact her at lhh4dogs@rogers.com
