Ward 7 (York West) Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti is hoping to preserve a 25-metre-tall red oak tree that’s said to be 250 to 350 years old, even if it means buying the property on which it sits. The tree is located on a private property at 76 Coral Gable Dr., dwarfing the approximately 50-year-old house under it. The tree canopy sits over the home. The red oak is designated as a heritage tree under Forest Ontario’s Heritage Tree program; however, the designation does not give the tree protection against getting cut down. “If we’ve got a very progressive tree policy and if we’re serious about wanting to save trees and protect them, then there is no argument to saving a 350-year-old red oak, the oldest >>>HERITAGE, page 14

Allen Road lane restrictions at Eglinton set to start today Allen Road drivers should prepare to feel some added headaches due to lane restrictions as Metrolinx readies to re-launch Eglinton Crosstown LRT tunneling. Metrolinx, the provincial agency in charge of building regional transit projects, said the construction will begin today. The construction will happen on northbound and southbound Allen, north of Eglinton West subway station. For the first few days of the project there will be lane restrictions on southbound and northbound Allen for up to four hours each day after the morning rush hour and ending before the evening rush.
Once this initial period is over, lane restrictions will end, but traffic control personnel will assist construction vehicles accessing and exiting the construction site. This work will take two to three weeks. This work is necessary for the re-launch of the tunnel boring machines on the east side of Allen, set to start later this month. This three-week construction project is to prepare the staging area for the tunneling, where dirt from the dug tunnels will be taken away by trucks from this site. Metrolinx spokesperson Jamie Robinson said 150 dump trucks will be accessing the site once tunneling begins.

The North York Concert Orchestra, shown here in 2014, is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a concert on Saturday.
North York Concert Orchestra celebrates 40 years by doing what it does: playing DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Though much has changed d u r i n g t h e No r t h Yo rk Concert Orchestra’s 40 years, the important things have stayed the same. Founded by late Seneca College business professor Bill Ward as an offshoot of the North York Symphony, which he co-founded, the orchestra was open to any musician, no matter their skill level. And, the orchestra had a mandate to reach out to the community, performing at seniors residences, schools, malls and more. That has not changed, said violin player Margery Dyer, 80, who has been with the group for 38 years. “That was one of our mandates, to bring music to people who couldn’t get to us,” she said, adding it was Ward’s passion to bring music to people. While sending the symphony out to free community concerts was too cost prohibitive, the community orchestra filled that spot. “Those of us who have been with the orchestra long enough have been

The symphony no longer exists. There are still no auditions to get in. Dyer, who received minimal training on the violin in high school, jokes she’s just hanging on as the level of music has advanced so much at the orchestra. “ We’re certainly ver y proud of our progress. Can you imagine sitting inside
Beethoven’s symphony and playing most of the notes and getting to the end of the piece at the same time with everybody else,” she said with a laugh. “When we started, we were friendly, just come and have a good time and go home. Right now, it’s come and have a good time, but you have to work at it.” The orchestra, which performs four subscription concerts per year, is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a concert Saturday at the Yorkminster Citadel. Orchestra vice-president and clarinet player Bill Krangle said the group put together a special concert for the occasion. They will perform Romanian composer Ion Ivanovici’s anniversar y waltz, Waves of the Danube, along with some well known classical tunes from Felix Me n d e l s s o h n , R i c h a rd Wagner, Gabriel Fauré, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and Antonín Dvorák. Soprano Gwenna Fairchild-Taylor will perform Mozart’s D’Oreste d’Ajace from Idomeneo.

The orchestra is striving to be accessible to the community in which it plays. For years, it played at a number of venues, but this year it returned to its North York roots and began performing at the citadel. “We are trying to build our audience in this new location in North York, particularly along all of the new buildings along Yonge Street,” Krangle said. The NYCO is a semiprofessional orchestra with the majority of its musicians being amateur. The orchestra is proud of the fact it took a short time from when it was formed 40 years ago to when it began booking performances. “It has been a win-win situation where musicians have progressed and enjoyed making music, and audiences have reaped pleasure from your performances,” wrote Mary Jane Ward, the widow of founder Bill Ward, in a welcome note in the orchestra’s anniversary program.

Future of Gardiner Expressway should not be taken lightly
Write us
S
hould it stay? Should it go? When it comes to the Gardiner Expressway, it appears everyone has something to say. The future of the muchdebated Gardiner is coming up at Toronto City Council’s monthly meeting June 10. After much discussion about which option is best – besides doing ‘nothing’ – the two options left standing are the ‘hybrid’ option – re-configuring the expressway, basically – and the ‘removal’ option, which would tear down the entire portion east of Jarvis Street creating an eight-lane, ground-level boulevard. Factions have come down on both sides: The Toronto Region Board of Trade is on the hybrid side of things as is Mayor John Tory, whose SmartTrack plan plays into this option with a major transit hub proposed for a newly developed 49 acres of land, some public our view some private. On Monday, former Toronto Time to act mayor David Crombie together with the city’s former city planon Gardiner ner said tearing it down is the is now right decision. Also on Monday, the Toronto Board of Health decided not to send to council the report by Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown that stated removal would provide the most health benefits. And of course councillors also fall on different sides of the debate, as do Torontonians after they were given the chance to weigh in on the issue during meetings over the last several months. According to a recent poll by Mainstreet Technologies, 45 per cent of respondents prefer the removal option versus 33 per cent who chose the hybrid option. After all is said and done, it’s time for council to put its money where its mouth is and decide on what exactly to do with the expressway. Its future is something that must be decided – not just for now, but for the estimated 100-year lifecycle of either of the main options on the table. Councillors should decide what’s best for the city and stick to it. And if possible, find a way to make sure future councils don’t fiddle with it like they have for decades on the public transit file. Transportation as a whole in Toronto is a complex issue. It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking public transit or highways. If the Gardiner decision is well-balanced, perhaps transportation in Toronto stands a chance.

FAQs about the NHL and NBA championships Q. The NBA finals featuring the Cleveland Cavaliers taking on the Golden State Warriors starts tonight in Oakland. The NHL Stanley Cup final with the Chicago Blackhawks battling the Tampa Bay Lightning began yesterday evening in Tampa. So? Any predictions? Curious in Cabbagetown A. Just one, Curious. The next question I’m going to get will be: Why is the hockey championship series called a FINAL, singular, and the basketball championship series referred to as FINALS, plural? Q. Why IS the hockey championship series called a final and the basketball championship series referred to as finals? Baffled in Bathurst Manor A. Told ya. Not bad, eh? One for one.
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Q. Terrific. I’ll call the Guinness Book of Records right after the column is done. In the meantime, since you brought it up, can we have your explanation? Peeved in Parkdale A. To what? Q. We’re waiting. Impatient on Islington A. Questions only, please. Come on Izzy, you know the drill. Q. Islington is a street not a neighborhood. Why did you include that in here? Riled in Rexdale A. I needed the alliteration for Impatient. You try and find a community around here that starts with “I.”
Q. How long is this going to take? I’ve got a subway to catch. Distraught in Downsview A. Are you absolutely sure the subway is running in your neighbourhood? You might want to check the TTC website before you head out. I forgot to do that and had to take shuttles on the Spadina line all weekend. Q. Any chance of getting back to the matter at hand? I’m not getting any younger, you know. Agitated in Agincourt A. What are you talking about, Ags. I was going to ask you your secret ? You don’t look your ‘Agin’ at all. Q. Oh brother. For the last time: Why is the NHL championship series called a final and the NBA championship series referred to as finals? Fuming in Forest Hill
A. You don’t really believe that was the last time, do you? Q. Can we just get your final answer already? Heated in Harbourfront A. Just final, only? You don’t want to know about my finals answer, too? Q. OK, Jamie. It’s Stewing in Summerhill. I’m going to count to 10. I’ve got something for you if I don’t have your response by then. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 ... A. Oh, no. The column’s over before he could finish. He was probably going to give me any tickets I wanted for both series, too. What a bummer. With my luck they’ll both go seven games. Malcolm won a $9,707,953.30 Lotto 6/49 jackpot, the OLG announced Friday. “I’ve been playing the lottery for four decades,” said Malcolm, at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up his winnings. “I choose my own numbers. Some of the numbers are from my birth date.” The day following the draw, Malcolm grabbed a print-out of the winning numbers at the same store where he bought his ticket, a 7-Eleven on St. Clair Avenue in Toronto. He checked the numbers at home. “After I realized I had the winning combination, I sat back, relaxed and started thinking about my plans for the money,” he said. He said he plans to keep it simple and invest in property.

Heron said the festival has seen attendance increases of approximately 30 per cent year-over-year and has added second screenings for its most popular shows. “There’s always been a fascination among Canadians with things Japanese,” he said. “It used to be traditional geisha and samurai stuff, now it’s also the nudie anime and the contemporary culture.” This year’s festival features movies of a variety of genres, catering to all viewers. There’s a hip-hop style Yakuza gang action film, an anime about a true story of Japanese and Russian children becoming friends in contested islands north of Japan following the Pacific War, three samurai films (various genres), romance, drama, documentary and more. A drama film about classical music, Maestro!, will be introduced by the assistant concertmaster for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra Etsuko Kimura, who will also play before the movie. “These are the films that Japanese audiences and Japanese critics and the Japanese film academy have recognized as being the best,” Heron said. “For most of these films, there really is no other opportunity to see them. If you have any interest in Japan or seeing films from other cultures, this is a great opportunity.” Perhaps the biggest date in this year’s festival will be closing night, which will feature the screening of Lady Maiko by Japanese superstar director Masayuki Suo, who will be a guest at the festival along with his wife, Tamiyo Kusakari, who appears in the film. Lady Maiko is a remake of the Audrey Hepburn classic
My Fair Lady. The director-actor pair is known for the critically acclaimed film Shall We Dance? (1996), which starred Kusakari, a professional dancer since childhood. The film spawned an American remake in 2004 starring Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. The JCCC has a mandate to share Japanese culture and Japanese-Canadian heritage with all Canadians. Heron said film is a successful way to do that. “Because it’s subtitled, it breaks down any language barriers, so that Japanese and Japanese-Canadians and the broader Canadian community can all come together and enjoy things without any obstacles,” he said.

Heritage designation won’t protect huge tree >>>from page 1 in the city under the policy. There shouldn’t be any debate. We should just be doing this because it does a lot of things,” Mammoliti said. “It obviously saves the tree, but we’re able to talk about the history of the site. If we do it right, we’re able to perhaps encourage tourists to look at the tree.” The tree is located in northwestern North York, near Weston Road and Sheppard Avenue, in Mammoliti’s ward. The property appeared to be sold recently, but is on the market again. It has been vacant for more than a month. The realtor could not be reached for comment. Mammoliti brought a motion to city council along with Councillor Sarah Doucette, asking the city to buy the property. His hope is to turn the property into a parkette. His motion, however, was deferred for a month at the May 5 council meeting until a June council meeting. He said the month will give him time to find partners willing to invest money in the project. He’s planning to work with city staff to develop a plan to preserve the tree. Mammoliti said it’s unknown if

new owners would wish to cut down the tree, but he wishes to protect it. “In this particular case, we have a tree that we don’t want cut down, we don’t want touched because it’s so old. It’s got its own history and we want to bring that out. The families that have owned this particular site in the past have been very prevalent owners in the community. They were
settlers,” he said. Edith George, a heritage tree preservation advocate and advisor to the Ontario Urban Forest Council, who lives nearby, said the move to preserve this tree is long overdue. She has spent four years researching the history surrounding the tree. George said the red oak has tremendous historical value. It, and

another red oak in the same neighbourhood, were markers for the historic Toronto Carrying-Place Trail. “This was the First Nations’ trail, then the French and British regime used it as a military trail,” she said. “The explorers used it, map makers, missionaries. This trail went to other trails. You could follow those trails into western Canada or right down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.” There is great cultural value in the tree as well, she said, because of who has owned the property on which it stands. In the mid 1800s, the Griffith family, a family of Irish settlers, bought the property. Some of the family members fought with the loyalists during the Upper Canada Rebellion in 1837. In the 1930s, Percy and Gertrude Gardiner bought the land and made it their summer country estate. Their family members, Helen and Paul Phelan (daughter and son-in-law) and Helen Gardiner (daughter-inlaw) were named members of the Order of Canada, while their son George Gardiner was named officer of the Order of Canada. George
Gardiner established The Gardiner Museum. The most recent owners were descendents of Ebenezer Doane, whose nephew Charles Doane joined the rebels and marched against the loyalists during the Upper Canada Rebellion in 1837, clashing with members of the original family that owned the land. A city staff report said there is community support in preserving the tree, including from such groups as the Weston Historical Society, Forests Ontario, Ontario Urban Forest Council and Cabbagetown ReLeaf. Mammoliti said discussions of preserving the tree have been going on for some time in the community, but now, he said was a good opportunity for him to attempt to do the same at the council level. “The opportunity has come up because there’s so many people that want to do something with it now that I think I can actually do it. The house was for sale so I thought this would be a good opportunity,” he said.
i
The motion to preserve the tree is expected to return to council next week.

Older animals can make wonderful companions Our June pets of the month are Robert and Chloe, who are both being overlooked by adoptive families. Robert, a 10-year-old neutered male Bouvier and husky mix, was given up when his family moved. Robert is not only stunning, but smart and sweet too! He walks mannerly on leash, is completely housetrained and is not destructive when left alone. He adores people and is friendly and affectionate. He enjoys the company of older, quiet dogs but does not like young puppies who jump in his face and space. Robert has a fatty lump on his chest the veterinarian has already examined and other than that he’s in top notch health.
lorraine houston critter chatter His ideal home would be a house rather than an apartment (he has been known to howl when initially left alone on occasion) with an adopter who enjoys daily walks and snuggling up with a movie. Robert is approximately 70 pounds of love in waiting. If you are interested in Robert, call 416-444-4190 or visit him online at www. speakingofdogs.com Chloe is a four- to fiveyear-old spayed female domestic short-haired cat who has been waiting at the shelter since April for a loving home. She was given up by her
owners when they could no longer care for her, and because she is on the shy side she is not having much luck attracting adopters. Chloe would love a quiet home without too much action, perhaps another cat for company and an adopter who will understand that slow and steady wins Chloe’s heart. Her ID number is A616213. You can visit Chloe at the Toronto Animal Services East Shelter at 820 Progress Ave. or see her online at www. toronto.ca/animalservices Lorraine Houston is director of Speaking of Dogs, an organization devoted to education, outreach and rescue. Tory puts stamp on board of health It’s a wonder nobody thought of it sooner. For years, the Toronto Board of Health has been a prickly ball of left-of-centre conscience that regularly rolls into more, shall we say, pragmatically conservative debates at Toronto Council. Part of this is because of the mandate of the board to exclusively concern itself with the health and well-being of Torontonians. Part of this is because mayors and their deputies have left the city council appointments to the generally progressive councillors who ask to serve on the board. So when a medical officer of health has suggested pesticides ought to be banned or smoking in public places curtailed or casino gambling is a bad idea, board members have obediently sent that information on to city council where it might be disregarded, but cannot be ignored. You would have thought mayors in the past would have done something about it. Well, maybe not David Miller, who generally found himself
david nickle the city in agreement with the pearlclutchers at public health, but certainly Mel Lastman and Rob Ford ought to have realized this finger-wagging fifth column needed attention. Leave it to Mayor John Tory and his deputy Denzil Minnan-Wong to finally take note, and action. Through a combination of public and city council appointments, the 2014-2018 board of health is shaping up to be a very different beast. On Monday, the board had before it a report from medical officer of health Dr. David McKeown, weighing in on the Gardiner Expressway debate. Tory favours an expensive and controversial plan to rebuild the elevated highway where it connects to the Don Valley Parkway. In a fairly cursory report, McKeown joined various planning and city-building experts in sug-
gesting was a bad idea. In the last term, that report would have made its way promptly to council, and it’s not hard to see how: the councillors on the board were Ford opponents such as Raymond Cho, John Filion, Joe Mihevc, Gord Perks, Sarah Doucette and Kristyn Wong-Tam. Cue the replacements this term, where a much smaller progressive rump of Joe Cressy, Mihevc and Doucette are joined by Jon Burnside, Christin Carmichael Grebb and Frances Nunziata, along with a new crew of citizen appointees. This was enough to deepsix that awkward report. The board agreed to send it along to the planning department. But when council debates the Gardiner at its June meeting, the awkward opinion of Toronto’s chief medical officer of health will be off the table. Someone in the new administration has been paying attention.

Quay reopens to two-way traffic wQueen’s Two-way traffic is returning to the Queen’s Quay as the revamped roadway gets ready to re-open. Starting this week new traffic signals will operate at several intersections along Queen’s Quay from Bay Street to west of Lower Spadina Avenue which will allow for the return of twoway traffic to the street. The road, which was once referred to as one of North America’s ugliest, has been under construction since 2013 and has undergone a top-to-bottom facelift, including widened sidewalks, relocated streetcar lanes and a new red granite pedestrian promenade. The transitions are expected to take until next Wednesday to complete and will also include new transit signals for the 509 Harbourfront service. GO TRANSIT UNVEILS TRAINS wLAKESHORE

Lakeshore West line. Over the next two years 127 new cars are expected to join GO’s fleet with improvements scheduled to begin this summer. Part of the plan to increase service is building a storage facility for the trains in south Etobicoke that, according to the Ministry of Transportation, will provide enough space for six 12-car trains. Ministry officials say the new vehicles are roomier and have more storage space than the current fleet. ONLINE TICKET SALES UP EXPRESS wFOR
The Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link is about to launch and before the inaugural trip Saturday you can purchase a ticket online. According to Metrolinx, tickets purchased online can be redeemed for up to a year from the date they were bought. You can also buy tickets
at station vending machines or if you prefer human contact, from service counters at Union Station and Toronto Pearson Airport. It costs $19 for a one-way trip on the four-stop route between Union and Pearson if you have a Presto Card. DRIVER FINES GO UP wDISTRACTED
Higher fines and demerit points for distracted drivers are part of new road safety legislation passed this week by the Ontario Legislature. The regulations are a hold-over from the previous term. They include upping distracted driving fines to a minimum of $300 as well as three demerit points. Also for the first time, drivers who open their car doors in the path of an unsuspecting cyclist, also known as “dooring,” will face demerit points in addition to higher fines. The restrictions are expected to be in place before the end of 2015. Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. His column appears on Thursday. Reach him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT

Business plan ‘boot camp’ June 11
development in the food business wBrand
Sticking with Enterprise Toronto, in their food business series, there’s an upcoming seminar in North York on branding. The session, which runs Wednesday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., focuses on
business in brief brand development and what kind of foundation entrepreneurs need in order to have their food business beat the sometimes-daunting odds of success in this particular area of business. Topics include consumer insight, target market definition and the challenges facing new products and businesses in today’s environment. The session costs $75 and registration is required. Visit enterprisetoronto.com to articulate your resume wWays
At the Don Mills Library, youth aged 12 to 19 are invited to join Lauren Ferraro for a session on answering the toughest question in an interview: ‘Tell me about yourself?’ Ferraro, a speech, dialect and presentation coach, will lead the session and look at
ways of “lifting your resume off the page” through clear, concise articulation. The session, which runs from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, is free, but registration is required. Either register in person at the branch desk (888 Lawrence Ave. E.) or call 416-395-5710. award winner wentrepreneurship
A local resident is among the Pioneers for Change Award winners announced by Skills for Change last week. The awards recognized immigrant contributions to Canada. North York’s Itah Sadu has been announced as the winner of the Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award. A gala honouring all of the recipients is being held downtown on June 11.
