York Mills C.I. students pull strings for charity The Hammer Band – From Violence to Violins gets $5,000 boost CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com A local charity that brings music and instruments to priority neighbourhoods received a $5,000 grant thanks to four students from York Mills Collegiate Institute. Grade 10 students Katrina Lawrence, Danielle Grabke, Jason Sze and Daniel Cui chose The Hammer Band – From Violence to Violins as their charity to champion for the grant provided by the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI), which has provided more than $1 million in grants to

community-based social service charities each year. The YPI process to be awarded $5,000 involves high school students working in teams to research, visit and present the work of a charity that serves the local community. “All of us are involved in music on our own,” said Katrina, noting it was one of the reasons why helping The Hammer Band appealed to them. Danielle also volunteered there two summers ago at the non-profit organization started by renowned violinist Moshe Hammer in 2006 in response to 2005’s “summer of the gun.” “It was a great opportunity to raise money for them,” said Danielle, whose mother also teaches free violin lessons through The Hammer Band program, which >>>YORK, page 11

food education. “We’ve run a monthly used clothing sale for 19 years, and people say we need more affordable and accessible fruits and veggies,” said Joy Alloway, church co-ordinator of the Fairview Good Food Market. “We’re trying this as a trial project to see how it will be received.” With slim pickings of area grocery stores, residents are often forced to drive or take public transit to buy food, she said. And with intensification slated for Don Mills Road and Sheppard Avenue, the lack of grocery store options will only become worse, she said. “This is a big experiment, but it’s fun,” she said of the pilot project.

Shoplifter sought after security guard threatened Police have released a security camera image of a man wanted in a violent shoplifting investigation from a North York grocery store Monday. Police said the suspect entered Loblaws at 5095 Yonge St. at Empress Avenue around 6:30 p.m. and left the store without paying for items. When security followed the man out of the store, the suspect brandished a knife towards the guard, who backed off, police said. No injuries were reported. The man ran off, possibly towards the subway, police said.
The suspect is described as black with light skin, 45 to 50 years old, 5’ 8” tall, with a medium build and short, curly dark receding hair. He was wearing a black windbreaker jacket, a dark checkered dress shirt, black pants and glasses. Police are advising the public to not approach this man, but to contact police if he is seen.

Ward 33 participatory budget meeting June 25 City ward has $150,000 to spend as part of pilot project DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Don Valley East (Ward 33) Councillor Shelley Carroll has $150,000 and is looking for ideas from her constituents about how to spend it to improve the northeastern part of North York. Ward 33 had been selected as one of three areas in the city to participate in the Toronto’s 2015 Participatory Budgeting (PB) Pilot. The pilot seeks to hear ideas from residents and then to vote on what they would like to be see built in the area. “It (PB) really is about the community setting priorities and then decid-
ing amongst themselves. It takes away all the acrimony that exists in political and community consultation,” Carroll said. She is hosting a public project development meeting Thursday, June 25 at Pleasantview Community Centre, 545 Van Horne Ave., at 6 p.m., where residents will be asked to brainstorm ideas for the funding. The money must be spent on capital projects, such as constructing something like a water fountain in a public realm. It cannot be used to hire more city staff to run programs. The money is coming from the city’s capital budget. Ward 33 pioneered the PB process in Toronto last year, when approximately $500,000 of Section 37 money was handed over to the community to decide how to spend it to improve the ward. This year, the city has included two other areas for the pilot project, each getting $150,000.
The other two areas are North York’s Rustic neighbourhood and the Scarborough neighbourhood of Oakridge, both of which are Neighbourhood Improvement Areas.
“
It takes away all the acrimony that exists in political and community consultation. – Shelley Carroll
While the other two are small neighbourhoods, Carroll’s area is an entire ward consisting of many neighbourhoods, which she believes is a better model for participatory budgeting. “We wanted to prove that you really get a greater benefit in terms of priority setting and really understanding your neighbours if you do a ward PB area. That’s the model they’re using in New York, Brooklyn

and Chicago.” She said in Toronto every ward has an affluent neighbourhood, a nonaffluent area, and Toronto Community Housing. She said by giving residents of the entire ward an opportunity to improve their community, they select the ones that need the most improvement, before they begin considering the frills. She gave an example from Brooklyn that she had studied. A father of a child in Grade 3 in one school came forward asking for doors to be installed on the stalls in the girls’ washroom. Another person, from the richer side of the neighbourhood, had wanted to improve the flower beds in a local park. This dad asked to remove his recommendation for funding of flower beds when he heard the dire need at his neighbour’s school. He said he would vote for the stall doors and return next year to ask for new flower beds. “That’s neighbourhoods
getting real and realizing where they need investment in their neighbourhood most. Taking the politics out of it made it possible for those two neighbours to connect to one another,” Carroll said. This could happen in Toronto, she said. “It’s an amazing process in that people sort of guardedly tiptoe in to sort of take part in it and wait and see what happens. They get about halfway through the process, when we’re deciding what’s to go on the ballot and they realize there is no ‘no’ in this process. There are only yeses.”

She said the decision is made between neighbours. City staff help with figuring out the costs of potential projects. She said it’s an uplifting process and people get invested in it. She said this kind of neighbourhood engagement doesn’t usually happen in the suburbs. Carroll wants this to become a yearly process in all of Toronto and with a bigger pot of money. This could reduce the city’s costs on consultant fees and speed up improvement of neighbourhoods by allowing members of the community set priorities. After the brainstorming meeting, the community will get back together to choose which ideas to throw on the ballot, to learn how much each one costs, and finally, likely in the fall, to vote for the ones they would like to see happen.

nformation overload is one of the defining characteristics of this generation. There’s so much of it everywhere, and often it’s unsolicited and uninformed, which makes disseminating the truth from the fiction a difficult task. When content is packaged similarly, or arrives to you en-masse at rapid speed, how do you discover the information that will help you become better informed, versus the content that may lead you astray? There’s an effort underway to shine a light on quality information where journalism is concerned. Dubbed JournalismIS, the campaign aims to promote professional journalism and all that it stands for: reliability, accuracy and accountability. Starting soon you’ll see advertisements in our print ediour view tionof The North York Mirror and other newspapers, on television ‘News is the and online touting the benefits of good journalism. lifeblood of We’re great at telling other people’s stories, but as journalists we’re democracy’ not great at telling our own stories and promoting what we do. That’s why the team at The Mirror and all other Metroland newspapers in Ontario have joined forces with major news outlets, media associations, unions and journalism schools to support the JournalismIS campaign. The volume of today’s information and range of opinion challenges the very nature of our industry, so we need to support one another in preserving and promoting the work we do. We need to demonstrate the power behind good journalism in engaging the public and fostering a stronger connection between individuals and the neighbourhoods in which they live. “News is the lifeblood of democracy,” said Mary Agnes Walsh, campaign spokesperson and Winnipeg Free Press reporter at the JournalismIS launch in Toronto last week. “Our campaign is aimed at initiating a wider conversation about the value of journalism and what we all need to do to support a robust journalistic culture in Canadian society.” So, we invite our readers to tell us what they look for in good journalism. Does that come across in the pages of The North York Mirror and online at www. insidetoronto.com? Where would you make suggestions for improvement? column
Two minutes for piling on the pylons When you head out each day, how far do you get before you run into an orange and black cone? A couple of miles? A mile? Half a mile, maybe? I can’t even make it up the street anymore without coming face to face with one of those ubiquitous party poopers. It’s as if the little devils are following me around. It’s one thing to come across them around highways, parkways and expressways, or bridges and railings, or public transit routes. We’re all aware there’s no getting away from cones in those locations. They come with the territory. But having them take over your neighbourhood, especially in summer, just doesn’t feel right. I’m not talking cones for rideathons, walkathons, 10k runs or marathons, where they’re up the night before and taken away the
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY night after. These events energize a community. What’s more, they come and go in the blink of an eye. I’m talking the cones that hang around seemingly forever, chaperoning jobs that never seem to get finished, like infrastructure upgrades or street maintenance. What’s curious about the latter scenario is there is typically a gap between when the cones are first plopped on the sidewalk and the project they’re there to oversee actually starts. It’s not uncommon to see such cones sitting all by their lonesome for long periods of time, before you see any activity. Moaning about it isn’t going to change anything, of course, so I say if you
can’t beat ’em join ’em. While the cones are out with nothing to do before the intended job begins, why not put them to work taking care of something else they are often associated with while they’re waiting, like a TV production, for example. That way you could kill two birds with one cone. During the time they’re idle, you could have them earning their keep while you shoot a reality TV series. By merging projects you could also close fewer streets, which would save taxpayer money and reduce neighbourhood aggravation. An added benefit is that you could even include the little pylons in the series. Not only would it be great PR for the cones, which are single-handedly taking the rap for slowing the city down to a crawl, they might become overnight sensations.
I can just see the shows now: Survivor Downtown Toronto: Sixteen carefree, captivating, charismatic cones protect the tallest new condo going up in the city. Who will be the last cone standing? So You Think You Can Sit There All Day Like a Bump On A Log?: Who will be the last cone sitting? Extreme Makeover: Cone Edition This Old Cone Toronto’s Next Top Cone The list is long. Who knows, if the idea catches on, they just might put smiles on our faces at rush hour, instead of frowns, as we inch our way to and from work each day. Film at 11. community to protect red hits pedestrians; oak tree deferred again one dead, four hurt wmotion wcar Toronto city council has once again deferred its decision on whether or not to protect a giant red oak tree on private property in northwest North York. Permanent protection of the tree, said to be 250-350 years old, would likely require the city to buy the property, at 76 Coral Gable Dr., located near Etobicoke. The motion, brought forth by York West Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, in whose ward the tree stands, was deferred at the June 11 meeting. The motion had originally been before council in May.
One person is dead and four others injured after a car crashed into pedestrians on a sidewalk at Yonge Street and Park Home Avenue last Thursday. Police said a vehicle was heading east on Park Home Avenue around 1:30 p.m. when it crossed Yonge Street and hit four people at Empress Avenue, which is an extension of Park Home east of Yonge Street. The car then continued into a parking lot at the northeast corner of the intersection, striking two parked cars, including a Porsche. One pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were taken to hospital with serious injuries, and two with minor injuries.

It’s warm, it’s pretty and everything is rosy this time of year, and North York’s Toronto Botanical Garden (TBG) wants to help people get outside enjoy their summer. To that end, the organization is hosting a free summer concert series, where people can enjoy the beauty of the gardens and of the music being performed. The Edwards Summer Music Series: Gardens of Song kicks off June 25, and runs every Thursday until Aug. 27. Each concert starts at 7 p.m. Admission to the garden and concert are free. Margaret Chasins, director of business and finance, and programmer of the concert series, said the series is for anyone who is a music lover. “It’s a lovely outdoor experience,” she said. “Even if it’s music they’re not familiar with, it’s just so beautiful having live entertainment amidst the trees and the flowers and natural beauty. It’s also a treat to be there among other people who are enjoying themselves. It’s a nice social atmosphere.” This year marks the fifth year of the series, paid for through a grant by The Edwards Charitable Foundation. It will feature 10 concerts this year in the courtyard adjacent to the historic barn in Edwards Gardens. There is some seating available in the Garden Cafe patio, but most visitors choose to bring their own lawn chairs. Others yet, Chasins said, will just explore the gardens while the music plays. The concert can be heard throughout the gardens. The local series is modeled after some successful concerts at other famous gardens, including Longwood Gardens in a Philadelphia suburb and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. “Many gardens do this because it’s a very beautiful combination to have
something cultural in a beautiful, natural setting,” Chasins said. She called the TBG a horticultural equivalent of a cultural institution such as a museum or performance organization. “We’re performing, but with plants,” she said. “We’re hosting people and preserving cultural traditions and creating new ones in the horticultural sphere. That’s a logical connection.” It also helps draw people into the gardens. Chasins said this year’s series features a lot of variety, as have the concerts in past years. There will be music of Indian-Canadian heritage, cabaret-folk, indie-folk, folk, roots, jazz, Brazillian-inspired music and more. One band, Toronto’s Lemon Bucket Orkestra, bills itself as Canada’s only balkan-klezmer-gypsyparty-punk-super-band. Another musician, Jayme Stone, will perform The Lomax Project. The project features a collection of music arranged by the late Alan Lomax, a researcher and folk music aficionado who toured the U.S. in the 1960s and ’70s performing and trying to preserve traditional roots music. The final concert of the series will feature Mexican-raised Quique Escamilla, now of Toronto, who won this year’s Juno Award for world music album of the year and 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for world solo artist of the year. The gardens have free guided tours on Thursdays (handheld audio tours cost $5), and an organic farmers market runs from 2 to 7 p.m. The Garden Shop and Garden Cafe remain open during the concerts. Beer and wine sales are available at the cafe.

York Mills Collegiate Grade 10 students Daniel Cui, left, Jason Sze, Katrina Lawrence, Danielle Grabke and teacher Jennifer Freudenthal recently received a $5,000 cheque by the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative for their presentation on why local charity, The Hammer Band – From Violence to Violins, was deserving of the grant.
York Mills students support grassroots music program >>>from page 1 which is now in 26 schools reaching more than 500 students from Grade 4 up to middle school. “They’re grassroots and they don’t get much funding at all,” Katrina added. Jason recalled how they first made their presentation in French as part of their civics course taught by Jennifer Freudenthal. When they were selected as the winner of their school term, the team delivered another presentation, this time in English, along with the
three other term champions at York Mills Collegiate this school year. They were selected again as the winning team and then presented a third time earlier this month with a representative from YPI as one of the judges. “They liked how clear it was where the money was going to go,” noted Freudenthal, who acknowledged the hard work put in by all four of the students. “They all really liked our passion for The Hammer Band,” said Danielle, adding they were able to see the
impact of the program in the priority neighbourhoods when they visited the kids at George Webster Elementary School and its satellite location George Webster South in East York. After the students were presented the large cheque of $5,000, they told Hammer, the program’s founder, the great news. “He was so happy. He was so ecstatic,” Danielle said.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYING...
You really took care of me and my family during our relocation period and you guided us through the entire scouting and purchase process. It is amazing how different the process is between Toronto and Montreal and we would have been lost without your guidance. We put our faith in you because you came highly recommended by Evelyn at Weichert, and you delivered. I would highly recommend your services to anyone that I would know and in fact, I already have. Take an enjoyable theatrical ride with ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ Alfred Uhry’s Pulitzer Prize winning play Driving Miss Daisy is being given a sensitive and winning production by the Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company. The performances make this play fire on all cylinders starting with Sharry Flett’s pitch-perfect star turn as Miss Daisy. Flett modulates the character’s
mark andrew lawrence front row centre gradual aging with subtle embellishments that sneak in with each succeeding scene. Over the course of 90 minutes we see Miss Daisy go from her late 60s to her mid 90s without any of the annoying gear-
changing that can often happen in an episodic play such as this. It isn’t only Flett who creates a memorable performance here. Sterling Jarvis as her driver, Hoke, matches her turn for turn. His facial expressions communicate every nuance of what the character is feeling even though his passenger can only see the back of his

head. The two create a concerto of moods as she gets more demanding as time passes and he becomes less afraid of standing up to her. Director Philip Akin avoids overplaying the race card, keeping the issue present without making it the dominant colour of the evening. He follows the ground plan laid out by the author, allowing for preconceptions each has about the other to be gradually replaced with understanding and respect. Uhry also uses the play as chance to provide a social history of southern race relations played out against several historic and now well-known events. It not only serves to support the time period of each scene, it also makes the exchanges between the two leads all the more touching. David Eisner offers a multidimensional portrayal of the loving son who above all else wants his mother protected. His scenes with Jarvis have rigidity appropriate to an employer-employee relationship, while in the scenes with his mother he displays a tenderness
Metrolinx invites you to attend a public open house to learn about plans for the MSF, the potential environmental impacts of the MSF and the recommended measures to mitigate any effects identified through our planning activities.

balanced with a firm hand of a child becoming a parent to his own parent. There are many issues this play touches on and it’s best to simply let the players push all the emotional buttons. Sean Mulcahy’s imaginative set provides both the interior and exterior looks as required and Arun Srinivasan’s subtle lighting design helps immeasurably. The formula is simple: take a great play, cast it with performers who know how to bring it to life, and provide them with the proper platform to present it. All the viewer has to do is go along for the ride. Driving Miss Daisy plays until Sunday in the Greenwin Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, 5040 Yonge St. For tickets visit www.HGJewishTheatre.com or call 1-855-985-2787.

Seek the truth at MythBusters ‘Explosive exhibition’ runs until Sept. 13 CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com
A
new “explosive exhibition” is now open at the Ontario Science Centre with interactive experiences that will help find the truth behind popular myths. Based on the Discovery Channel’s television series, MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition uses scientific method and fun experiments to test myths such as whether a dropped piece of toast always lands butter side down or if pulling a tablecloth off a fully set table is possible. “I think you’re going to see MythBusters is a great combination of fun, creativity, scientific method, experimentation and
technology,” said Maurice Bitran, CEO of the Ontario Science Centre. He added many of the problems in today’s society will have to be solved by young people who understand science and are able to put various hypotheses to the test. But to encourage youth to learn about science, it can’t be seen as boring or inaccessible. “That is the myth we want to bust here today at the Ontario Science Centre,” Bitran said. That message seemed to catch on with the Grade 7 and 8 students from St. John XXIII Catholic School on Grenoble Drive who were invited to the media launch preview event on June 4. “All the activities are interactive and challenging,” said Grade 7 student Gabriel Jae, who tried the “Killer Card Toss” display to see if he can throw a playing card and make it stick
in a foam target. Fellow Grade 7 students Claudine Gregorio and Ruvanee Singh also enjoyed trying out experiments like “Running in the Rain” where drops of water mixed with edible dye can be shown under black light to see whether running or walking in the rain keeps them drier. “It’s fun to explore and try new things,” Claudine said. Also on hand were representatives from Ryerson University as the exhibition’s education partner. “It’s a natural partnership,” said Imogen Coe, dean of the Faculty of Science at Ryerson, adding she hoped to bring science through such exhibitions as MythBusters to many young people from diverse backgrounds over the years.

Provincial Liberals to learn same lesson on carding that Tory did? Maybe those holding power in this city and this province want to eventually stamp out the odious practice of carding by police and maybe they don’t. But if they do, a word of advice: it’s hard to stamp something out walking tip-toe. That seems to be what the provincial government had in mind this week when it sent Community Safety Minister Yasir Naqvi out to announce new regulations this fall to govern police when they stop and question members of the public not suspected of a crime. The regulation isn’t a ban of the investigative practice that has been shown to disproportionately target young men of colour in Toronto, and Naqvi made that clear when he announced it on Tuesday. The regulations, yet unreleased, will simply require that stops by police not be arbitrary. It isn’t going over any better with community groups than the policy approved earlier
david nickle the city this year at the Toronto Police Services Board — a policy that amounted to little more than guidelines. Today, Mayor John Tory will make an attempt to stop carding, bringing a motion to the Police Services Board along with a mea culpa, for supporting the policy to begin with this spring. It’s a position Tory was shamed into taking, by a gathering of highly influential Torontonians and a seminal essay by Toronto journalist Desmond Cole describing the indignity and traumatizing effect of the practice. It’s a wonder that the provincial government isn’t taking a lesson from Tory’s experience and matching his newfound disdain. It’s true that police value carding as an intelligence-
gathering strategy. But one wonders at the intensity of the defence of the practise by Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders and his predecessor, Bill Blair. Crime rates have been declining for years in Toronto, and it is unlikely police enforcement, or lack thereof, has had as much to do with that as have simple demographic shifts. At the same time, there’s a wider context emerging, as evidence emerges that police across North America are engaging in sometimes quite odious acts of racial profiling and violence toward people of colour. It is perplexing to see political leadership indulge the digging-of-heels that persists in policing ranks. Tory learned the folly of that, but he had to be taught. The provincial Liberals seem bound to learn that lesson themselves.

touts improved off-peak service wTTC The TTC is promising more improvements to off-peak transit service. At a press conference Monday, TTC chair Josh Colle announced 52 bus and streetcar routes, which also includes the city’s four rapid transit lines, will have 10 minutes or better service outside of the rush hour period starting in the fall. Details are vague, but the result promised by Colle will be shorter waits, especially outside of the downtown core. The TTC board is expected to approve the improvements to service at its June 22 meeting. TO FOCUS ON NEIGHBOURHOODS wPiPS
This year’s season of Planners in Public Spaces (PiPS) will focus on neighbourhoods. The initiative, a pet project of outspoken chief city planner Jennifer Keesmaat, is intended to make the world of city planning more accessible to the public. Every year since 2013, the
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT series places civic planners in an informal setting to talk about city building themes one-on-one with locals. PiPS’ new season was officially announced yesterday at a launch party at Tranzac Club. For the full calendar, check out www. toronto.ca/planning/pips MAPS TO GUIDE TOURISTS wINTERACTIVE
This week the city launched a network of interactive signs intended to make the city more accessible to the thousands of visitors expected to attend the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. The Toronto 360 Wayfinding Strategy, a.k.a TO360, includes two sizes of info totems, descriptive pillars depicting areas of interest and local maps, as well as finger posts, which literally point the way to landmarks. The signage is found in the Entertainment District, St. Lawrence and most prominently in the
Financial District, whose Business Improvement Area helped with planning and partial funding of the $800,000 pilot project. OPEN HOUSE in north NEXT WEEK wyork
Want to know more about Metrolinx’s plans to build a new facility to house new transit vehicles to operate on the Finch West LRT? The province’s transit planning agency has committed to having the light rail line completed by 2021. It’s already purchased a stretch of vacant land on Finch Avenue West between Norfinch Drive and York Gate Boulevard which will serve as a maintenance and storage facility for the LRT vehicles if an Environmental Assessment on the project is approved. Metrolinx will hold an open house on its plans for the facility Wednesday, June 24 at 7 p.m. at St. Wilfrid Catholic School, 1685 Finch Ave. W. Rahul Gupta is The Mirror’s transit reporter. Jane is a beautiful, sweet 43 year-old nurse and looking for the right man. Jane has never been married, has no children, and no baggage. She loves football, hockey, going to concerts, and being outdoors. She is very down to earth, and easy to get along with. She is a great listener and always wants to help others. Jane is a very charitable person; she donates and volunteers for many causes including children’s charities and animal shelters. Jane doesn’t drink or smoke, she is not one to go to bars, and she has had a hard time meeting the right person in her small community. She is always up to try new things and is open to new experiences. She’s a bit shy at first, and she is nervous about dating, but really wants to meet the right person to settle down with. She is very open and accepting of people, she’s non-judgmental, and cares more about who someone is on the inside rather than the outside. She is looking for a good man who is energetic, fun, adventurous, has a good sense of humor, is down-to-earth, and a little bit romantic.
