The show is kicking off its third season Monday. For Szymanowicz, this is her second season as Thalia. “I’m really excited for the third season to begin. My character’s transition and growth and development from season two to season three is pretty big. I’m pretty excited to see how the fans will react to that,” the 18-year-old said. Passover Food Drive helps Jewish families in need FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com More than 2,000 food boxes will be assembled and delivered as part of this year’s Passover Food Drive to help Jewish families in need celebrate the holiday. Each of the 2,600 boxes will contain most of the essentials needed for one Seder meal and a lunch to GTA residents who may be living in poverty, are recent immigrants, have disabilities or are in financial dire straits. The Passover Food Drive, organized by the National Council of Jewish Women of Canada, Toronto Section, will run March 15 to 25. The boxes, filled with traditional Passover food such as matzo, apple sauce, farfel and canned tuna, will be packed and delivered to those in need in Toronto and the GTA, said Passover Food Drive chair Glenda Ephron Cooper. Volunteer drivers are needed March 29 to deliver boxes between 8:30 a.m. and noon, Ephron Cooper said, adding those who are interested can show up at 4700 Bathurst St. the morning of. Each driver is expected to deliver six to eight boxes. Along with volunteers, the food drive is also looking for monetary donations, with cash going towards purchasing perishable items such as chicken, she said. Passover, which celebrates the deliverance of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt, begins the evening of Friday, April 3 and ends the evening of Saturday, April 11. To help supplement the donor program, the food drive is holding a Buy a Chicken

raffle this year to help cover costs of purchasing the birds. Raffle tickets cost $10 each or three for $25. Tutorials and labs may be affected during the strike with further details to be provided by the relevant programs. The union said it remains committed to returning to the bargaining table as soon as possible to get a fair deal for its members, end the strike, and get students back in the classroom.

ayor John Tory’s first 100 days have been momentous: he’s waged a war on those who park on arterial roads during rush hour; he’s headed to Ottawa to discuss city issues; he’s discussed bringing the city’s outdated methods into the 21st century; he’s put into motion the beginning analysis on his SmartTrack transit plan; and he’s tabled his first budget. Exciting times for Tory. Equally exciting times for the City of Toronto. But all this excitement, whether admitted or not, will come with a price: fare hikes, tax hikes, service fee hikes – hikes, hikes, hikes. This is not to say hikes are necessarily a bad thing; you have to raise money to run this city. But where does this lead? While these steps feel like the our view city is heading in the right direction in terms of government relations, transit planning and Long-term economic development, goal is what even we assume they are planks in a short-, medium- and long-term matters strategy for the city. We think the public would be served with the ever-craved transparency of a public document that shows what those strategy benchmarks might look like for key municipal files. Tory has done an admirable job of being available to the media – what seems like any time of the day – and he’s also brought a necessary calm to the chain of office. But this is window dressing when it comes to the big picture. It’s clear Tory wants to see Toronto on solid ground – he has to, he banked on the city’s economic outlook by borrowing in the future to pay for a present-day budget shortfall. Regardless of all the things accomplished during his first 100 days, it’s the next 265 days, the next 1,095 days until the next election that matter more. The short-term gains are welcome, but the long-term goal is what needs articulating. If we are to be the world-class city Tory and Torontonians want to be, we will need to pay for it – we’ve said as much in many editorials. However, we also need to know from those in charge of the municipal purse what their long-term vision is – two, three, four even eight years out. The first 100 days sets a tone, but what is the entire song they’ll be playing?

Enjoy the benefits of daylight saving time It’s the same story every year when we move the clocks ahead an hour. People get all worked up over it the night before and then moan and groan about the enormous impact it has on their lives the following morning. Thankfully, the grumbling over the switch to daylight saving time doesn’t last long. By the next day everyone is back to their regular complaining routine. What’s surprising about the upheaval that arises over one measly lost hour is that the purpose of the time change is to have the opposite effect. It’s supposed to lift our spirits, not dampen them. Extended daylight is good for the system. What’s more, like any form of savings, it’s great for the bottom line, too. For my money, given that this has been the coldest winter in recent memory, the timing for the recent move to daylight saving couldn’t be better. People

For those of you who have been reluctant to embrace the idea in the past, but are considering investing in daylight savings for the first time, you won’t be disappointed. Here are just a few of the myriad benefits you can expect. 1. Interest accrues daily The sights, the sounds, the air, the atmosphere, the whole shebang, it doesn’t take long to get hooked on daylight. 2. High-yield bonds go hand in hand There’s just something about getting together in the great outdoors that helps relationships grow. (The same holds true for the average outdoors and the so-so outdoors, for that matter, if that’s all that’s available to you.)

3. The value of its liquidity should never be underestimated Is there anything more relaxing than sharing a coffee under a deep blue sky? 4. Don’t forget about the convenience inherent in this plan Partaking in the benefits of sunlight is never more than an open door away. 5. Start-up costs are waived With good reason. Nobody charges you admission to see the sun. 6. There are no monthly fees as well See above. (Sea below, too. If you live near water, that is.) 7. It’s also tax-free Whatever you do, don’t blab that around. We don’t want the government getting any ideas. The last thing we need is a DSTT (Daylight Saving Time Tax). 8. In addition, daylight saving is not mentally taxing It’s not rocket science, nor do you have to think

outside the box to participate either. You don’t have to think at all. You just have to head outside. 9. Reducing debt is just a walk in the park All the experts agree that most debt is accumulated inside during daylight hours. So put your wallet away and get reacquainted with fresh air. In other words, it’s time get a new set of priorities. The best way to say goodbye to rising debt is to say hello to raison d’etre. 10. Lastly, nobody will try to convince you to get a points card along with it That’s because you can’t accumulate multiple points in this plan. There’s one point and one point only when it comes to daylight saving: enjoy. And nobody can redeem that. The experience is priceless. Man, 19, charged with sex assault, robbery Police have charged a 19-yearold man with multiple counts of sexual assault and robbery involving sex trade workers in North York. During January and February, police said a man would contact the female workers, then sexually assault and rob them while brandishing a knife or firearm. Grade 12 students in Toronto successfully landed on Mars last month. It wasn’t with NASA or the Canadian Space Agency – it was at the Ontario Science Centre’s Challenger Learning Centre. Students participated in Voyage to Mars, a simulated journey to the red planet that divided them into two rooms: the spacecraft and mission control. They acted as pilots, geologists, engineers, scientists and doctors, all with specific tasks to perform for a successful landing. Upon landing on Mars, roles were switched. The Challenger Learning Centre is an interactive science experience that promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) learning. “Imagine reading everything about skateboarding, and then trying to skateboard. It won’t happen,” said the centre’s science educator Martin Fischer. “You need to do it to really know how it is. The more senses you involve, the faster your brain can learn.” Fischer, along with his colleague Liona Davies, led the teams in the Mars mission. He said the class “did really well,” but it wasn’t all smooth sailing as students had to confront major problems that mirrored real-life scenarios. Radiation from the sun was a risk, solar flares that could damage electronic equipment were a problem and even landing the craft in the planet’s crags and canyons proved difficult. But the purpose of those challenges was to show students

Virtual ﬁeld trip a success for Ontario Science Centre students what space scientists experience in their jobs. “It’s only a fraction of what they must experience,” said Chloe St. Amand, a student involved in the mission. “We have a great team here, but they also have a great team of professionals and a lot higher stakes.” It was with that mission that the Challenger Learning Centre was founded in 1986 to honour the crew of shuttle flight STS51-L; seven astronauts aboard space shuttle Challenger died after the launch failed and the shuttle broke apart 73 seconds into its flight. Now, there are more than 40 centres in United States with one in Canada and others in South Korea and the United Kingdom. Canada’s centre, which is situated inside the North York-based Ontario Science Centre, opened in 1992. The science centre’s Science

School gives Grade 12 students the opportunity to spend a semester at the Centre to earn science and math credits. And it was clear by the enthusiasm and knowledge demonstrated by students that they had a profound interest in science. “I’ve always loved science,” St. Amand said. “I would love a career in science. To all parents, I say bring your kids to the science centre. It’s a wonderful experience.” The Challenger Learning Centre offers a Return to the Moon mission as well. “I love how the students get into the pressure of the situation,” Fischer said. “They take it seriously, they try really hard and that’s the most rewarding part. When they leave, they sometimes say that was the best field trip ever.”

City planners must present alignment and station location recommendations for the Relief Line – which is forecasted to be the third largest TTC route as soon as it’s completed – for council to endorse by the end of the year. TERMINAL DESIGNS TO BE UNVEILED wFERRY Future looks for the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal will be unveiled at City Hall next week. At 6 p.m. Monday, officials from Waterfront Toronto will present “bold and innovative” submissions from five architectural design teams vying to transform the leaden ferry terminal along with Harbour Square Park. The submissions will also be displayed inside the City Hall main rotunda until March 20. Public feedback from the challenge will go to the jury panel tasked to pick the winning design.

Tory sets tone in first 100 days

ne hundred is a nice round number and instinctively, one thinks that if you have 100 days at a job or with a new employee or dating a new paramour, it ought to be enough time to tell if things are working out. It’s fair to say that 100 days into our four-year relationship with Mayor John Tory, things are working out. The former provincial Progressive Conservative leader and radio talk show host has set a standard of behaviour and leadership that’s pretty comforting in the moment and shows potential in the future. The phrase “unlike his predecessor” could show up in sentences throughout this column, and I’ll try to just use it this once, because the fact is that Tory’s success so far is made all the greater by the contrast with what went before. Since taking office, Tory has shown a good-

david nickle the city natured work ethic and a willingness to modify his preconceived agenda based even on inconvenient facts. Tory’s only interest outside of his new job appears to be his wife, Barbara: there are no afternoon field trips for football coaching or any other games. And beyond those baseline virtues? Speaking with reporters on his 101st day, Tory summed up his sense of his own accomplishments and aspirations. “This was not going to be an administration of ideology and slogans… I hope what people see of it so far and I hope that what they do see is that it’s an administration of common sense, an administration of compassion, an administration that serves all the people and has a balanced city government.” That is actually a pretty

fair self-assessment as far as it goes. My, but he is green, though. Tory is the first person to hold the mayor’s office in Toronto with no municipal experience. He is easily tripped up when he chairs a meeting, and naïve when it comes to intergovernmental negotiations. Sometimes this is inconvenient, sometimes it creates a real problem. Tory misread the mood of the provincial government woefully when he left a meeting with Premier Kathleen Wynne believing that the $86-million hole left by the end to housing pooling might be filled. In dropping that ball and deciding not to raise property taxes to cover the shortfall this year, Tory risks turning the next few hundred days in office into a much larger challenge than he signed up for.

She just grows a lot in terms of her story line.” The Next Step follows the lives of an elite group of young dancers who train at The Next Step Studio. After winning Nationals in season two, the group’s celebration is cut short when they are evicted from their studio. The only way to keep their spot at internationals is to merge with their arch-rivals, Elite Dance Studio. The dancers must learn to put their differences aside and work together in order to show the world what they’re really made of. Szymanowicz grew up with athletics, but her mom enrolled her in ballet classes, which she didn’t like. She later took jazz, which she loved and began expanding her dance repertoire. “As I grew up, my dancing matured,” Szymanowicz said. “It was really a way for me to express myself and was a way for me to create and to be creative in terms of movement and making shapes with my body and making these beautiful pictures on the stage or in the studio. I just fell in love with it. It drew me into the arts.” She attended Cardinal Carter

Academy for the Arts for dance, saying being surrounded by other artists was inspirational. Szymanowicz has an extensive dance background that includes having been an apprentice faculty member at Fresh Dance Intensives, dancing with the Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre, Toronto Dance Industry and The Dance Zone, and being the “Face of Fever” at the 2013 Fever International

Dance Championships. Szymanowicz was already a fan of the show and knew a number of the dancers on it when she auditioned hoping for a small dance role. The producers liked her enough to give her a main role on The Next Step, while in her final year of high school. She fell in love with acting and has started taking acting lessons and got an agent, she said. A high school graduate now, Szymanowicz is taking time off school to pursue dance and acting, saying she has a few projects on the go that could end with her appearing on television outside of The Next Step. She intends to eventually pursue a post-secondary education for business. She’s excited for this season of The Next Step. “The fans are going to love all the dancing, the acting, the drama. It’s just a really good step up,” she said. The show airs at 7:30 p.m. It will run each weeknight leading up to the mid-season finale in April.

But along with teaching the young people in the 51 elementary and middle schools he’s responsible for about traffic, personal and Internet safety, he hoped to establish relationships that went beyond typical duties. For the second time in his four years as school liaison officer, Gonsalves organized a chess tournament at St. Jude Catholic School, which brought together about 50 grades 1 to 8 students from five schools last month for the day-long event. “I always love to play chess,” he said. “There are a lot of benefits for students. It involves creativity, critical thinking skills, and boosts memory retention.” Funded by ProAction Cops & Kids, students were treated to a pizza lunch and participation certificates, he said. “It’s important (students) know me in different lights,” Gonsalves said. “This is the age when they are most impressionable.” St. Jude’s physical education teacher Dino Casciato, who helped with scheduling the matches and purchasing

Coming soon to North York: MEC Fannie Sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com With its final hurdle cleared, the city’s second Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) store is set to open in North York next year. The mixed-use development, which calls for a 42,000-square-foot store and a 50-unit townhouse complex at 784 Sheppard Ave. E., west of Leslie Street, received final approval from the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) the week of Feb. 9 following a bylaw technicality that sent the matter to the adjudicative tribunal, despite North York Community Council and city council approvals last year. “We’re really looking for-

ward to being there,” MEC’s CFO Sandy Treagus said of the North York location. “We are a member-based organization, and of our 600,000 members in the GTA, 100,000 are in North York.” The location, which used to house Sheridan Nurseries, is steps away from Bessarion subway station and close to Hwy. 401, making access to the 1.8-acre site fairly easy by various modes of transportation. The North York store will mark MEC’s sixth location in Ontario – second in Toronto. The North York store will stock an assortment of equipment and apparel for a range of outdoor activities, such

as hiking, cycling, running, camping, snow and water sports. The store will front onto Sheppard Avenue, and the townhouse development will be situated behind the store. Because MEC is not in the residential development business, it has partnered with developer Broccolini to build the townhouses, Treagus said. The new store will employ about 142 people once it’s up and running in spring 2016. The townhouse development is scheduled for completion in summer 2016.

Developers propose 39-storey condo at Sheppard and Yonge DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com A group of developers is proposing to spend $150 million to revitalize the Sheppard Avenue and Yonge Street area, including facelifting and expanding the Sheppard Centre and building a 39-storey condo. Officials at the nearby Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts, which would share a roadway with the redevelopment, however, fear the construction and the added traffic volume once the project is complete will become a safety hazard to their students, who study in a split campus and are required to cross the road between periods. The project would add the new

condo, demolish and relocate 25 existing residential units, and renovate the Sheppard Centre, including expanding it by building on a vacant space. The project would also retrofit retail frontages along Yonge Street, Sheppard Avenue East and Greenfield Avenue. The school is directly across Greenfield from the proposed development. “Please do not ever put me in a position to have to call a parent that their child is injured because of some concern that was not taken seriously,” said school principal Anne Bellissimo at the Feb. 18 North York Community Council meeting. The principal asked that all

safety concerns be addressed by the developers before, during and after construction. The matter was before community council this month, but Councillor John Filion (Ward 23, Willowdale) asked to defer the decision to give the developers time to address the concerns of the school. Bellissimo’s concerns were mostly related to the added traffic volume, saying students aren’t always paying attention when out walking. She asked that the school be consulted regularly on construction plans, that a crosswalk be installed directly in front of the school and sidewalks widened, and that the construction truck

With money provided by the provincial government, Metrolinx estimates it would take at least three years to electrify UP station and track infrastructure as well as vehicles. The unclear timeline for electrification has proven a major bone of contention for opponents of the

project. The rail spur rises to 28 metres above street-level at its highest point, and according to Metrolinx is the longest rail bridge in the province. It also has six curves with varying levels of sharpness requiring different speed restrictions. Trains are limited to around 40 km/h entering and leaving the Pearson station. The route spans over at least five separate roadways in the airport area including Airport Road, Viscount Road, Network Road, Zahvy Way and Goreway Drive and is buttressed by a series of concrete piers ranging in height from five to 25 metres. Designing the elevated route presented a special challenge for completing the project, said Barnett. “One of our challenges constructing this, other than the fact we’re way up in the air, was working around all the roadways,” he said. “We needed lots of co-ordination, not just for road closures but working around utilities like power lines.”
