The 15-year-old William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute student decided to combine the pair and run a competition focusing on acts of kindness, with the prize being two tickets to Bieber’s Wednesday, May 18

“Donald Trump, are you still alive in 2016?” The question was one of many Georges Vanier Secondary School’s 1991 student body had for their 2016 counterparts stashed inside a recently uncovered time capsule sealed inside a school locker 25 years ago. Not only is the businessman alive and well, he’s poised to become the Republican candidate for the 2016 United States presidential election. Boarded up with a plank of wood and a combination lock (which had the code taped to the back), the locker, which served as a time capsule, was opened Thursday, April 28 as part of the school’s 50th anniversary celebrations. “We had absolutely no idea what was inside,” said principal Tamara Grealis. “We were very curious to see what was put in.” Items inside the capsule included the school’s 25th anniversary T-shirt, an old dot matrix student enrollment printout, a yearbook from 1990 (the 1991 yearbook wasn’t ready in time), a geography textbook signed by teachers from that department, a VHS tape which hasn’t been watched yet, and bristol board covered with messages and questions for the future. While students in 1991 wanted to know if Quebec was still part of Canada, if Bart Simpson was still around, and if Saddam Hussein still ruled Iraq, the Trump question drew the biggest roar from students,

Francesco D’Aquila was just 53 when he died of a massive heart attack while on the job at a downtown construction site in 1956. His daughter, Carmela, was taking a teaching course when she received word her father, a bulldozer operator and foreman, had passed away. Carmela was one of hundreds of relatives and friends who attended the unveiling of a memorial Thursday, April 28 on the grounds of Villa Colombo honouring more than 1,000 Italian-Canadian workers who died in workplace accidents in Ontario. The ceremony, held next to Villa Colombo Memorial Gardens at Dufferin Street and Lawrence Avenue, coincided with the international Day of Mourning for workers killed, injured or disabled on the job. The Villa Colombo memorial is comprised of 11 columns bearing the names of the fallen workers, including two women, identified to date. More names will be added to the memorial as additional workplace victims are identified from past records. “I think it’s amazing,” Carmela said of the memorial, which bears her father’s name. “It brings all the emotion back.”

beautiful country.” Madda Lena Perone was just four-years-old when her father, Nello Vertolli, was killed when a bulldozer pinned him against a high beam on a Mississauga construction site in 1972. His nephew, Amedeo Vertolli, who was on-site at the time of the accident as a summer student, put his uncle’s name forward for the memorial. “I think it’s important to remember and know what happened,” he said. “It’s very important this be remembered. It’s good to recognize, but it brings back memories that are sometimes suppressed.” As the memorial was unveiled, the Canadian, Italian, and Ontario flags, which flew behind it, were lowered to half-staff. The land where the memorial sits was donated by Villa Charities, with the construction work provided pro bono by Giannone Petricone Architects and Dominus Construction Group and its trades. Other costs, such as the name plates, were covered by donations from individuals, businesses, and unions. Funds are still being raised as more name plates must be purchased as new fallen workers are identified.

We must adapt to condo boom T

here’s a shift taking place in Toronto that really should not come as a surprise given the amount of condominium construction happening in our city. One need only look at the number of cranes, not just downtown, but also in other parts of the city, to recognize this building boom. But the stereotype regarding the people who these condos are being built for is changing rapidly in Toronto. They are no longer the choice for young people, seniors and those looking to be landlords. More and more families are saying no to the so-called suburban dream of a house and yard, and are choosing to buy condos and raise their families in them. Certainly some of this is driven by price, and the fact that single-family homes in Toronto are becoming more and more out of reach for many. For some, condo life is strictly a financial our view decision, but for many others it’s become a lifestyle preference. As Amy Geer told Metroland Wise to plan Media Toronto of the decision for ‘vertical she and her husband Andy made to buy a two-bedroom condo in communities’ the Fort York area, it was a question of financial balance and the kind of life they wanted to live. “If we bought a house we wouldn’t be able to afford a baby; a condo would allow us to have the lifestyle and the baby,” she said. And that’s changing the way the City of Toronto’s planning department has to think and operate. The planning department initiated the study Growing Up: Planning for Children in New Vertical Communities as it works on ways to deal with what will be the increasing needs of families with children in what had previously been condo communities geared to adult residents. The study is looking at how these high-density condo communities can better accommodate “households with children and youth.” That’s an issue for the present, and it will certainly raise some challenges as many of these communities are lacking in both recreational and educational spaces nearby. This shift also puts pressure on Toronto’s public and Catholic school boards, which will find themselves with growing numbers of students living nowhere near schools, while many schools in established “suburban” neighbourhoods are seeing severely declining enrolment. As our city changes, so must we change the way we think, plan and adapt.

Tory well versed to take on raccoons

was struck last week, attending the official launch of Toronto’s new raccoon-proof green bins on a lovely, quiet street in Scarborough, at just how suitable the event was to the talents of our current mayor, John Tory. That may sound mean, but I don’t intend it to be. When Tory arrived at the foot of the driveway of Scarborough resident Rhoda Potter, the host of the launch event, he could not have been more charming, or dare we say it, funny. He joked around with the city sanitation worker who was driving the truck. He kidded around with Ms. Potter, who was demonstrating her own raccoonproofing on her green bin as a contrast with the city’s new, Atlanta-designed higher tech solution (Ms. Potter used a rock and a bungee cord). He kidded around with reporters while demonstrating the even higher-tech robot

david nickle the city arm that is designed to lift the green bin into the sky and dump its offal in the truck from a height even raccoons would find dizzying. At least we think he was kidding when he suggested one of us try the robot arm. The whole event went like one of those stand-up comedy routines that ask the audience if they’ve ever noticed how absurd something-or-other is, how irritating whoeverwe’re-irritated-with is or (as in this case) how darn cute and clever whateveris-vexing-us is. It occurs to me that this is one of the most formidable skills that Tory brings to the job of mayor, in the post-Rob Ford Toronto: the ability to be pleasant and funny, an ability honed no doubt by his years hosting talk radio,

and one that has lent the mayor a great advantage with the public. It is no coincidence that Tory’s biggest successes fall into this category, too, first pointing out, and then dealing with, the many small irritants in city life. One of Tory’s first acts as mayor was to announce a towing blitz on those darned cars that keep parking illegally on downtown streets during rush hour. Don’t you hate those? And isn’t it absurd to pay the equivalent of a meal out, to haul your kids onto the subway for a Sunday trip? Free rides for children was the answer to that. And then there was the business of the raccoons. They’re comedy gold, those clever little, erm, bandits. Dealing with the ingenuity of raccoons has turned us all into hapless coyotes trying to catch a road runner, and Tory is more than happy to deliver

the ACME raccoon-proof bin, that (like all ACME products in Road Runner cartoons) looks raccoon proof, if possibly not fool proof. It made for a breezy and pleasant afternoon last week, having a bit of fun in Scarborough with Ms. Potter, commiserating about a silly but still troublesome problem and offering up a simple solution. As I write this, I’m watching Toronto Council try and figure out another troublesome problem – the city’s coyote-and-roadrunner relationship with UberX, and the troubled taxi industry. If only the solution to this problem were as simple as building a better green bin, our excellent mayor would know just what to do.

Student murals enliven NYGH stairwells Earl Haig visual arts students create their second mural at North York General Hospital fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com As a kid, Vanessa Cassar found great joy in blowing dandelion seeds into the air. “I know it’s a weed, but it symbolizes happiness,” she said. And since she believes getting outdoors and into a change of atmosphere vastly improves not only physical but mental health, the Grade 12 Earl Haig Secondary School student thought the dandelion, complete with floating seeds, would be the perfect image to paint inside a staircase at North York General Hospital (NYGH) to encourage physical activity. Cassar, along with several other Earl Haig students from Claude Watson’s visual arts program, took to a stairwell inside the Leslie Street and

Hwy. 401 hospital Thursday, April 28 to create a mural of Cassar’s design between the first and second floor landing.

This was the second time students from the school’s visual arts program painted a mural in the hospital’s staircase. In 2014, students created a colourful kite piece between the ground and first floors, which Cassar was also part of, to encourage staff, physicians, volunteers, patients and visitors to take the stairs instead of the elevator.

The partnership came to light after a NYGH employee suggested artwork should be created in the dreary staircase, and a connection was then made with Earl Haig.

“We are trying to brighten a dull staircase,” Cassar said, adding this was the first time a design of hers will be showcased publicly. “Walking relieves stress.”

The murals are part of the hospital’s Step It Up program, which is an eight-week challenge open to all staff. Staff are encouraged to log all the steps they’ve climbed, and for every

Sophie Nakashima, who has worked on a mural showcased at Earl Haig, said she’s in favour of art presented in different spaces. “A little bit of art spruces up the area,” said the Earl Haig student, adding she stays fit by participating in cross-country, soccer and track and field. ot a day goes by that Halle Glen, a Grade 11 student at Etobicoke’s Silverthorn Collegiate Institute, doesn’t think about her best friend Abby Fedosoff. It’s been just more than a year since Abby, a competitive swimmer, writer, and artist, committed suicide. She was only 15. Still, when Glen hears her friend’s name or catches a glimpse of someone’s long, blond hair, it’s a shock to her system. “She is always on my mind,” Glen said. Glen wished she’d known just how much pain Abby was in. Many of her friends and teachers had no idea the Markland Woods-area resident was living with ObsessiveCompulsive Disorder (OCD), an illness Abby kept secret. “I would have done anything in my power to help her,” said Glen, revealing she believed her friend kept her illness to herself for fear of what people would think. That’s why Glen is participating in the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s (CAMH) ‘One Brave Night,’ an all-night challenge to raise awareness of and funds to defeat mental illness, which takes place Friday, May 13. Glen called Abby, “one of the most amazing people I knew,” on her online CAMH One Brave Night Personal Page. “She was beautiful, kind, loving and compassionate,” wrote Glen, adding she was a fan of the group One Direction, loved dogs, her family and friends. No one is immune to mental illness, said Dr. Katy Kamkar, a psychologist at CAMH and an assistant professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Toronto. One in five Canadians will experience mental illness or addiction in their lifetime, yet two thirds of those say they feel

alone, Kamkar said. “It touches every single person either directly or indirectly,” she said. CAMH’s all-night challenge is an evolution of an event that was initiated last year called ‘From Darkness to Light,’ which raised more than $700,000 in support of Canada’s largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital and research centre. “The program has really taken off,” said Kamkar, with more than 1,500 people registered as of May 3. One Brave Night challenges participants to stay up all night because people living with mental illness indicate that nighttime is the most difficult for them, Kamkar said. The goal is to reduce the stigma of mental health as well as the suffering in silence while raising funds and encouraging people to seek treatment. Kamkar treats clients with a variety of mental health issues, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety and stress disorders as well as occupational trauma. She said it’s important to provide loved ones with the proper sup-

port – listen, ask how they’re doing, go with them to medical appointments and perhaps, most importantly, show the right attitude. “Attitudes can be harmful. Saying things like, ‘Relax, you’ll get over it’ or ‘You’ll get better,’ any of these can feed the stigma,” Kamkar said. “They can make people feel guilty and reduces their sense of self-worth and prolongs recovery. Show empathy instead. Provide the care that’s needed.” After Abby died, Glen’s sister, Kendall, revealed she had been hiding a mental illness. Once she shared what she was facing, her family and friends rallied around her. “My sister has a good support system,” Glen said. “I think the key is to find one person who you’re comfortable with to talk to.” Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Canadian youth, according to Statistics Canada 2014 data. Youth who die by suicide are frequently experiencing an undiagnosed or untreated mental illness, Government of Canada stats say.

“Young people ages 15 to 24 are most likely to experience mental illness or substance abuse than any other age group in Canada,” Kamkar said. “After accidents, suicide is the second leading cause of death among 10 to 19 year olds.” CAMH is home to the Slaight Family Centre for Youth in Transition. This is Canada’s first centre dedicated to understanding and treating severe mental illness and addictions in youth from the late teens through early adulthood and a world first. It combines research and clinical care to advance new approaches for early intervention and recovery. CAMH treats more than 30,000 people and responds to more than 500,000 outpatient visits annually. Its ER sees about 7,400 patients each year, a 76 per cent increase since 2006. CAMH provides specialized treatment for psychosis episodes, early Alzheimer’s disease, drug addiction and depression, children with behavioural issues and people with schizophrenia, among a host of other ailments. CAMH boasts as many as 3,000 physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists, researchers, educators, volunteers and students and has recruited world-renowned, award-winning specialists to many of its clinical programs and research initiatives. Glen’s ‘Team Abby’ has already raised more than $2,300 toward One Brave Night and pledge money is still coming in after an April 18 swimathon. The teen, who lives on the Brampton-Mississauga border, said she and at least 20 of her friends are ready for a night of air hockey, ping pong and, if the weather permits, swimming.

The Caregiver Show comes to the Ontario Science Centre The Caregiver Show will take place tomorrow at the Ontario Science Centre, which is at 770 Don Mills Rd. The annual show offers information, assistance and relief for those looking after a loved one who is suffering from dementia or other conditions. More than 50 exhibitors are scheduled to take part in the show, which will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Statistics from the Alzheimer Society of Canada show that in 2011, 747,000 Canadians were living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias – that’s 14.9 per cent of Canadians 65 and older. The risk for dementia doubles every five years after age 65. The show helps raise awareness of how many family members are involved in caring for loved ones in need. This year’s The Caregiver Show is sponsored by The Mobility Shop and CanniMed, and is brought to Toronto

residents by Metroland Media Toronto and Downsizing Divas. As the Alzheimer Society of Canada notes, caregiving is a critical issue for people living with dementia and for Canadians in general. A quarter of all family caregivers are seniors themselves; and a third of them (more than 200,000) are older than 75.The Caregiver Show will allow attendees to learn about various health topics, demonstrations from the participating organizations and experts as well as the resources, services and products available for caregiving needs. Participants will also have a

chance to connect with other caregivers and professionals in the industry. Also, there will be chance for caregivers to rejuvenate themselves in the Rest and Relaxation Zone where they can enjoy a little pampering. New to this year’s The Caregiver Show will be a screening of the documentary Sybil and Betts: Requiem for a Friendship by filmmaker David Bajurny. Admission to the show is free. One person suffered lifethreatening burns after a two-alarm blaze ripped through a North York apartment Tuesday. Fire crews were called to a highrise at 3400 Weston Rd. for a report of smoke visible from a balcony at 1:51 p.m. While fighting the fire in a ninth-floor unit, firefighters came across two people. “ They were removed to awaiting paramedics,” Toronto Fire Services Capt. Adrian Ratushniak said. critical condition One victim was taken to Sunnybrook hospital’s burn unit in critical condition. The other, a woman, was taken to a local hospital with minor smoke inhalation.

Supt. Kim McKinnon of Toronto Paramedic Services said a third person was treated on scene for minor smoke inhalation. The blaze was extin-

Her mom, Jill, had high praise for her daughter’s initiative. “I think it’s fantastic,” she said. “(Samantha) has never made a website before, she’s never held a competition before. We have a family friend who is a lawyer and he gave some pointers (for the rules and regulations).” So how will Samantha know the submissions are truthful? “I hope they are,” she said. “There is an authenticity to them. And some people have included links to things and websites.” But when it comes down to it, she will just have to “belieb”.

‘Oldest profession’ subject of Curtain Call Players current theatre production

Broadway has long held a fascination with women engaged in the oldest profession. For a 1930 musical called The New Yorkers, Cole Porter wrote the song ‘Love For Sale’. It was almost immediately banned from radio airplay, and naturally became a top seller in sheet music form and on records. In the years that followed, Broadway saw a parade of hookers including Sadie Thompson, Sweet Charity and Irma La Douce. Add to this colorful group Miss Mona, proprietress of The Chicken Ranch, better known as The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. The legend of the Chicken Ranch inspired Universal Pictures to bankroll a lively musical comedy with a country-flavored score by Carol Hall. The show was a big Broadway hit running for over five years. A film version starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton was released in 1982 giving the title even wider popularity. In the production by Curtain Call Players at Fairview Library Theatre, Miss Mona is portrayed by a strong-voiced Lisa

mark andrew lawrence front row centre Ferreira. Her no-nonsense approach to the role is just perfect, and her singing delights the audience with its clarion country sounds. She is given great support by the Chicken Ranch regulars including Amy Mullin as Jewel, Meg Gibson as Angel, and Glenna Conant as the newly recruited and aptly named Shy. The villain of the piece is Melvin P. Thorpe, played with all the self-righteousness of a typical TV evangelist. David Rudat brings out the smarminess of this totally amoral creature. When Thorpe comes up against the town sheriff, Ed Earl Dodd, played by Rick Schiralli, the fireworks really begin. First in his very public tirade against the TV reporter, and then later in a heated exchange with Miss Mona. Barry Flynn makes a welcome contribution with his second act number ‘the Sidestep’ as he cleverly avoids giving direct answers to any questions. The show-stopping

number features the local football team, The Aggies, who perform a spirited locker room song and dance in anticipation of their visit to the Chicken Ranch. Jon Alexander provides the choreography and it gives the production a real lift. Keith O’Connell keeps the show moving along at a brisk pace encouraging the performers to the flirtation with their wild side yet keeping everything innocent and carefree. Despite the allusions to what goes on in the upstairs bedrooms, O’Connell walks a fine line between a sexy tease and good taste and at least in public there is “nothin’ dirty goin’ on” as one lyric states. New city ground transportation bylaw covers taxis, Uber DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto Council has approved a new ground transportation bylaw that will let licensed taxis use a version of surge pricing for trips booked with smartphones, remove training requirements for drivers and maintain the old standard taxi plate system that lets taxi licenses be bought and sold for six-figure prices. At the heart of the new rules was a set of more than 100 amendments put forward by Mayor John Tory, after more than a week of behindthe-scenes negotiations with

councillors across the political spectrum. But according to councillors on the left, Tory at the last minute abandoned a set of resolutions that would have levelled the playing field between ride-hailing companies like Uber and licensed cab drivers. “To say that I’m sad today is an understatement. I can’t believe that I got up this morning thinking I had a solution to this problem and I’ll go to bed with tears,” said Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor and Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell. “I’m really disappointed

because I know people worked really hard trying to find a resolution,” said Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor Kristyn WongTam. “I’m forced to vote against the mayor’s motions because it doesn’t do what I had wanted to do. We are creating a system that’s going to become worse.” Wong-Tam and McConnell were in the minority. Council approved a bylaw that does create some level playing field by removing many regulations that taxi brokers must currently live by. To r y ’s a m e n d m e n t s

Taxi companies would also be able to use a variation on the surge pricing that Uber has used – but with a cap.

However, brokerages have no obligation to top up drivers’ pay when they discount fares. The amendments do require that vehicles in fleets that PTCs (private transportation companies) operate be inspected and background checks be submitted to the city. And they require that drivers have the same level of insurance coverage as taxis. “Members of the public were concerned about three things,” said Tory, answering questions about his amendments.

“One was insurance. Now this is going to be equivalent to the taxi industry. Two was vehicle inspections. We’re all going to end up at the same place having those done. Three, the driver background checks which will have to be done to our satisfaction.” But Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks said the plan did nothing to protect consumers or to protect drivers. “All the things that protect the consumer being changed here will be harmonized down,” said Perks. That report will come back in September, 2016.

Until now, Rhoda Potter had the best-engineered green bin on her street. ‘Idiot’ sorry for overtaking streetcar A self-professed “idiot” motorist apologized this week for cutting off riders disembarking a TTC streetcar. As detailed in a Reddit post published Monday, the user blamed a “lapse in judgement” for overtaking a stopped 504 King streetcar at Strachan Avenue as passengers got off. “I honestly had a lapse in judgement and instead of stopping when the streetcar slowed, I continued moving and as such endangered the people getting off,” states the penitent motorist. According to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, all vehicles must leave at least two metres of space from the nearest doors of a stationary streetcar.

The choices, whittled down from 884 public entries, were unveiled last week as the finalists of an online contest for the planned 1.75 kilometres of continuous public space under the Gardiner Expressway, from Strachan to Spadina avenues. Aga Khan Museum exhibit features centuries of art of mythical creatures An exhibit at the Aga Khan Museum featuring dragons, unicorns, and demons will launch Saturday Marvellous Creatures: Animals in Islamic Art, takes centre stage in artworks spanning the seventh to 21st centuries. An installation by Lebanese artist Mohamad-Said Baalbaki adjacent to the exhibition explores the human-headed winged stallion al-buraq. “Whether you’re considering Aesop’s Fables, the Brothers Grimm, La Fontaine, or a Persian epic like the

Shahnameh, marvellous creatures of all kinds play a powerful role in our collective imaginations,” director and CEO Henry Kim said in a news release. “Animals are appealing at any age, yet they can also transmit wisdom across generations and cultures. This is a fascinating exhibition that will engage the whole family.” Marvellous Creatures was originally organized by and exhibited at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar and features many works

from its collection. The exhibition has expanded in Toronto with works from the Aga Khan Museum collection and with loans from international private and public institutions, and will also feature a buildyour-own creature station and a family storybook reading nook. The museum is at 77 Wynford Dr., near the Don Valley Parkway and Eglinton Avenue.
