A GoFundMe page has been set up for a cancer-stricken Jane Street and Finch Avenue area woman to help cover medical expenses while she awaits permanent Canadian residency approval. Maureen Johnson came to Canada from Jamaica on a visitor’s visa in 2011. The following year she was approved for a work permit, which was good for four years. In 2013 the 55-year-old was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, which metastasized to her lungs.
But because her work permit expired in February, Johnson’s medical treatments are no longer covered under OHIP, which means she pays out of pocket for doctor’s visits, medication, and cancer treatment, which involves travelling to North York General Hospital by bus once a week to have fluid drained from her lungs. She originally applied for permanent status as a refugee in February 2015, but was denied by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). She then applied for permanent status on humanitarian and compassionate grounds in >>>APPLICATION, page 18

Paramedic delivers his baby on side of the road Toronto paramedic Pascal Turmel had delivered five babies while on the job. His sixth delivery was extra special: his own daughter. And it took place at the side of the road. Pascal’s wife Lisa began having contractions on the evening of May 1. “Up until about 9 o’clock, they were still a good 10 minutes apart, and then all of a sudden it started accelerating,” Pascal said. The couple then left their Weston home and made their way to North York General Hospital. But while on Hwy. 401, Lisa told Pascal, “We’ve got to pull over.” Pascal stopped at Avenue Road, called 911 and hopped in the back of his minivan. “At that point the head was crowning. You could see the head during contractions,” Pascal said. “My fear was just if there’s a complication. It’s one thing to be at work where you have all the equipment. ... We’re trained, but without equipment you can’t do a lot.” Once an ambulance pulled up, Pascal was more relaxed, >>>BABY, page 11

Heart of Fashion gala raises $1.2 million for NYGH More than $1 million was raised from a fashion gala to support a second Interventional Radiology (IR) suite at North York General Hospital (NYGH). The Heart of Fashion gala held Saturday on private property in the Bridle Path brought in $1.2 million for the Leslie Street and Hwy. 401 hospital. “The Heart of Fashion event was a huge success and we are thrilled to have exceeded our goal of raising $1 million,” Terry Pursell, president and CEO of North York General Foundation, said in a release. “We couldn’t have done it without the generous support of our sponsors, donors and guests.” According to NYGH, IR is a subspecialty of medical imaging and surgery that uses high-resolution imaging to perform minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in nearly all organ systems. Compared to conventional surgeries, IR procedures minimize incisions, reduce risk of infections, shorten hospital stays, speed recovery times and reduce long-term cost and health outcomes.

Canadian fashion icon Jeanne Beker makes an appearance during the North York General Hospital Heart of Fashion gala on Saturday in the Bridle Path ravine. The event raised $1.2 million in support of a new interventional radiology suite at the hospital.
NYGH currently provides oncology, vascular and non-vascular intervention for some 4,000 patients annually. “Our dedicated multidisciplinary IR team is so thankful for the generous support of everyone involved in Heart of Fashion,” Dr. Ryan Margau,
clinical director for vascular and IR at NYGH said in a release. “The new suite, with gold-standard technology, will allow us to offer both improved and an increased number of services, better patient outcomes, and shorter recovery times for our patients.”

Parents oppose sale of McNicoll Public School site Child-care centres using the North York site propose turning school into children’s hub FANNIE sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Hundreds of parents, some with their children in tow, came out to a public meeting to unanimously oppose the possible sale of a school building that houses two child-care programs, including one for children with developmental needs. Some 250 people packed inside the cafeteria of A.Y. Jackson Secondary School last Thursday to voice their opposition to the potential sale of 155 McNicoll Ave., the former site of McNicoll Public School, which currently houses Adventure Place Child and Family Centre and city-funded McNicoll Avenue Child Care Program.
McNicoll Public School closed in 2000 and was transferred to Toronto Lands Corporation, the real estate arm of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), for management and leasing after the 3.33-acre site was deemed surplus. Cheryl Webb, executive director of Adventure Place, said the site should be recognized as a hub – something Premier Kathleen Wynne called for more of in 2015 – for children and families. “The solution is not as easy as selling off the property,” she said, adding 150 children and parents are on the premises daily. Adventure Place offers programs for children up to age 12 who are experiencing difficulties with devel-
opment, learning, communication, behaviour, social/emotional functioning, attention/regulatory functioning and pervasive development disorders. Lynn Lewis, executive director of McNicoll Avenue Child Care Program, said the program will likely close if the building is sold. “We have 49 families at all times and we are still full with a waiting list,” she said. “It’s so scary that this can be taken out, and then what? Where would families go?” Willowdale Trustee Alexander Brown said his hope is the property stays open as a community hub. “I don’t believe any of the trustees will vote to sell it,” he said. Attendees supported the idea
of turning the site into a hub, with some suggesting the building could be rented out evenings and weekends to help with funding. Don Valley East Councillor Shelley Carroll, whose daughter attended Adventure Place years ago, said the site was originally designated for educational purposes and should remain as such. “It’s not a site that’s going to get anything but a small amount of one-time money and embarrassment from the province,” she said. The public can make deputations at the Wednesday, June 15 TDSB planning and priorities committee meeting before trustees make a final decision at their Wednesday, June 22 meeting. If the sale is approved, the property will be offered to other public
agencies, including school boards, colleges, universities, Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs), and the three levels of government, starting in September for roughly six months. If an interested buyer comes forward, negotiations will begin in September 2017. If no buyers express interest, the property will be taken to the open market. Any sale of the property would be at fair market value, with an acre of land in the Don Mills Road and McNicoll Avenue area, the site of the property, valued between $2 million and $4 million, according to the TDSB. So far, informal interest has not been expressed in the property.

Be safe this Victoria Day long weekend
A
long weekend is just about here, and many of us will hit the road for this Victoria Day holiday. No matter when you go – be it in the city or on a longer road trip to a cottage or to pitch a tent – your main focus should be arriving at your destination alive. The excitement of having a few days off from the everyday sometimes causes people to throw common sense out the window (along with some litter – don’t do that by the way). While you and other drivers snake through slow traffic, you can expect the Ontario Provincial Police to be keeping a close eye on how you drive. Last year, a total of 27 motorcyclists and four passengers died, our view with 17 of those motorcycle drivers reported as driving properly Share the at the time of the crash, the OPP road and be reports. While speed and loss of control firework safe also played a role in the deaths, the OPP is cautioning both motorcyclists and other drivers to do a better job of sharing the road. These weekends away from our routine don’t have to be reckless. Speeding, careless lane changes and unnecessary risk taking can cause more than a rush – it can end your life or someone else’s. If you follow the rules of the road, and the person driving next to you does the same, along with the vehicle ahead of you and the other trailing a safe distance behind, there’s no reason this shouldn’t be a holiday to remember – for all the right reasons. And if you want to celebrate the birthday of the late Queen Victoria with fireworks – be safe about it. The Canada Safety Council believes it’s best to enjoy fireworks at a show put on by professionals such as the City of Toronto set for Monday night at Ashbridges Bay Park. But if you’re going to be your own pyrotechnic protege, follow these tips: • Read the instructions, cautions and warnings on each firework item. • Set up outdoors in a clear, open space. Light fireworks on a hard, flat and level surface to ensure stability. • Spectators should be at a safe distance. • Only adults (18 years or over) should handle the fireworks. • If you are impaired, do not handle fireworks. Council needs to step up to make Toronto sustainable If recent history has taught us nothing else, let us remember this: that left to their own devices, Toronto’s political leadership is about as good with a budget as a pack of 12 year olds with their parents’ credit cards. It had always been so, at least within the lifespan of amalgamated Toronto. In 1997, Mel Lastman was elected the city’s first mayor on a promise of a three-year property tax freeze – delivered at the same time as the city was reconstituting itself into the largest municipality in the country at the behest, but without the support of the provincial government. Lastman’s first term set a tone that subsequent councils have maintained: namely, that marginal property tax increases are the most injurious thing a government might inflict upon homeowners – about an equivalent evil to reducing services upon which those homeowners had come to rely and limiting promises of improved ser-
david nickle the city vice to come. And so over the years, council has approved projects, maintained services and kept property tax increases slim to none. This week, Toronto’s city manager Peter Wallace brought out another in what is developing into a series of despatches, delineating what to many has been obvious for years. Toronto has been able to maintain the fiction of a growing city and a low property tax environment thanks to factors that are either entirely beyond its control (a booming real estate market that pours in revenue through the municipal land transfer tax) or measures of which council should frankly be ashamed (approving capital projects for future years with no means of financing). At some point, very soon, the boom’s going
to end and the projects will have to be built. Wallace first pointed this out to councillors in the fall shortly after he took the job. That early report gave Mayor John Tory a small amount of political cover, to propose that the city maintain a 0.5 per cent levy on the property tax bill currently in place to help finance the Scarborough subway, to finance more transit infrastructure. This report, coming to next week’s Executive Committee, provides an imperative for more of the same: a debate on what other ways we might find, to support ourselves in the style to which we’ve become accustomed. To whit: revenue tools. These conversations haven’t gone well in the past. In the last term of Council, politicians balked at supporting any revenue tools, even as they voted to go forward on subway expansion in Scarborough. Former mayor David Miller was able to get a couple
of major revenue tools through council, but the battle over the land transfer tax and vehicle registration tax nearly broke council. Will it be any different now? It’s not encouraging. Toronto council this term has shown just as little appetite for long-term financial planning as ever. Under the leadership of Tory, council approved a billion-dollar rebuild of the Gardiner Expressway’s elevated lanes, against expert advice. The Scarborough subway, absent all but one stop, remains on the books. And this week, Tory made it clear himself that one thing he won’t support is any significant increase to Toronto’s bargain-basement property tax rates. There’s no doubt about it: the arrested 12 year olds on Toronto council have a lot of growing up to do.

Firefighter Sara Rosen remembered at funeral as ‘genuine, selfless, smiling’ TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com A sea of hundreds of Toronto firefighters wearing their dress black and white gloves stood solemnly with family and friends Monday, May 16 morning to pay final respects to their fallen colleague Sara Rosen, whom one remembered as “genuine, selfless, smiling and full of life.” Mourners packed Benjamin Park Memorial Chapel on Steeles Avenue West near Keele Street in North York for Rosen’s 90-minute funeral. Jackie Gaistman, Rosen’s partner, called her “my compass.” “Sara is the fiercest, most genuine, brutally honest, inspirational, joyful, free-spirited, soulful, generous, strong, determined, feisty, loyal, courageous person I’ve ever met,” Gaistman said, calling her his wife. “Sara loved her parents and her brother Mark with every ounce of her heart. Mark is living testament to Sara’s love, generosity, caring and courage. She was, and still is, such a hero.” Twelve years ago, Rosen donated her kidney to her brother, Mark. Since then, the siblings would celebrate an additional “birthday” every year marking the date of the transplant, said Rosen’s father, Allan. Rosen, 38, was a 15-year Toronto firefighter, who worked out of Station 443 on Islington Avenue in central Etobicoke. She had planned to take a year’s sabbatical from her job this September to attend law school on a full scholarship. Rosen died last Thursday in a mountain biking accident while out riding with a colleague at Kelso Conservation Area in Milton, Ont.
Gaistman called his life with Rosen a “magical journey” because of Rosen’s “joy of life, excitement and passion. You made everyone around you laugh, feel happy, feel worthy, feel respected. You made everyone want to enjoy life. You always fought for what was right. “It is your strength that is helping me get through this terrible tragedy.” A strong sense of self, determination, and a spirit to fight for what was right were themes woven throughout the stories Rosen’s father told from his daughter’s life. “Nothing would stop Sara,” Allan Rosen said. He recalled how she stood playing with water in a sink while other children in her class gathered as per a teacher’s instruction. How she pulled an astounded 240pound male firefighter, wearing 75 pounds of weights, from a smoke-filled room during a training exercise. How she persevered to another fire hall and was hired when the platoon chief of the first hall she approached said they weren’t set up to accept women firefighters. “Do you have a lock on the door? Do you have a bunk?” Rosen had asked. How unreservedly she had offered a kidney to her brother when his health began to fail. And how she then became a vocal advocate for organ donation. Many mourners wept when Allan Rosen closed

his eulogy by saying, “I won’t hear my daughter say ‘I love you’ anymore. Goodbye, Sara. I love you.’” Mike McCoy, Toronto fire deputy chief of operations, said her colleagues will remember Rosen “as a truly compassionate person, a humanitarian with a zest for life and a person with a strong, determined personality.... She was generous and caring, and always eager to lend a hand.” McCoy encouraged mourners to take some comfort in the knowledge Rosen was doing what she loved when her life ended. “On a beautiful spring day,
she was living life to the fullest and enjoying every minute of it,” he said. Rosen “made us all better people,” John Getty, acting captain of Rosen’s firehall, said of the colleague he had known for a decade. Getty shared how Rosen had often tried to co-opt him into endurance races like Tough Mudder, miles of mud and obstacles designed to test mental grit, strength, and physical fitness. “When Sara mentioned a race, I learned to Google it first,” Getty said to the laughter of mourners. Getty said Rosen will be remembered for living true to her values. “These are some of the

values that meant so much to Sara: Speak your mind. Listen to people. Give everyone a chance. Work hard and play hard. Love your family and friends. Don’t be afraid to go into the tide; it will make you a stronger swimmer. Love animals. Never stop learning. Consent to be an organ donor. And of course, follow your dreams.” Getty said. Hundreds of firefighters stood at attention in two lines on either side of Alness Street outside the funeral home as members of the Toronto Professional Fire Fighters’ ceremonial unit piped Rosen’s funeral procession to the
cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Sara Rosen Memorial Fund, which benefits organ transplants at Toronto General Hospital, mental health causes, and The Positive Space Anti-Bullying Campaign. Donations may be made c/o The Benjamin Foundation, 3429 Bathurst St. Toronto, M6A 2C3. Visit www.benjamins.ca or call 416-780-0324. Rosen leaves her partner, Jackie Gaistman, children Frelan and Alex and her beloved dog, Brownie, her parents, Allan and Ann, and her brother, Mark.

Pathways to Education celebrates 15 years of supporting at-risk students across Canada
Former high-level cyclist Claudine Labelle founded teen-focused program fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Claudine Labelle knows a thing or two about the importance of physical activity. A former high-level cyclist, Labelle suffered a major brain injury in 2004 after she was hit by a car while training. She was able to regain function, but had to give up racing. It was during her recovery she decided to focus attention on getting young people moving. Labelle launched running program FitSpirit in 2007, with the goal of helping girls aged 12 to 17 complete a five- or 10-kilometre run – without the competition factor. Over the past nine years, more than 110,000 girls in Ontario and Quebec have taken part in the program, which is run out of participat-
ing schools. The eight- to 10-week program is mainly run by teachers, with visits from FitSpirit ambassadors who provide guidance in living an active lifestyle, healthy nutrition and developing positive selfesteem.
“
Girls don’t usually do things unless their friends can do it with them, and you can do this with your friends.
– Angela Ryoo, Grade 8 student
Participants train three days a week, with culmination of the program ending in a five- or 10-kilometre run. More than 3,000 FitSpirit participants from the Greater
Toronto Area laced up inside Downsview Park Tuesday, May 17 to take part in the runs. “Teenagers are more conscious about themselves and face judgement,” Labelle said. “We are trying to remove all barriers. (The run course has) no ranking, it’s all fun, and you can walk it.” Calling FitSpirit “cool and interesting”, Donview Middle Health and Wellness Academy student Angela Ryoo said the program gave her the chance to run a 5K. “I’ve liked running since I was little,” said the Grade 8 student, adding this was her second year taking part in FitSpirit. “I think FitSpirit is a good thing. Girls don’t usually do things unless their friends can do it with them, and you can do this with your friends.”
In 15 years, Pathways to Education has helped not only to dispel the myth that children from low-income backgrounds could not suc-
ceed in school, but increased the percentage of students going to post-secondary education from 20 per cent to 85 to 90 per cent.
Pathways gave a future to those children, says a local councillor. To read the full story, visit bit.ly/stuhelp

THE BRAIN
PROJECT
Public art installation to bring public awareness of brain health FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com A downtown open air public art exhibition this summer focusing on the brain is hoping to raise $1.5 million for Baycrest Health Sciences. Running Friday, June 3 to the end of August, The Brain Project exhibit will be made up of 100 customized brain-inspired sculptures designed by artists and sponsored by philanthropists and corporations. The brains will be on display at venues across the city, including Nathan Phillips Square, MaRS Discovery District, and OCAD University. Once the artwork is on display, the public will have a chance to vote on their top five. A number of sculptures will then be auctioned off in October, with all proceeds going to Baycrest to support crucial care, research, education and innovation in the fields of aging and brain health at the Bathurst Street and Hwy. 401 site. Toronto’s Baycrest is home to the Canadian Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation (CC-ABHI), a new national hub and network of seniors care organizations dedicated to the development, validation, commercialization, dissemination and adoption of brain health and seniors care products and services. The brain sculptures are designed by world-renowned and emerging members in the arts community, including street pop artist Mr.
Brainwash, and artists Gary Taxali and Karim Rashid – along with some added star power. Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy will have his brain sculpture design on display, along with a sculpture created by North West – who had a little help from her mom, reality TV star Kim Kardashian West. Artist Dani Cooperman knew she had to be involved with The Brain Project the second she heard about it. “Two of my grandparents battled Alzheimer’s disease so this cause is very close to my heart,” she said. “My grandmother was also an artist, so to open the conversation of brain health through the arts is quite fitting. Based on my personal history, I have a strong connection to Baycrest and to their groundbreaking work and research. After witnessing it firsthand, I truly believe that no brain deserves to go blank.” Her sculpture, titled The [Em] powered Brain, showcases how gray matter can be improved and strengthened. “Graffiti-styled descriptors like ‘pow’, ‘flash’ and ‘zing’ illustrate the conceptual sound of neurons firing, while arrows show the expanding hippocampus,” she said. “Prisms demonstrate the creation of new neural connections, and colourful neural pathways change direction and travel throughout the brain. LED lights within the sculpture are
constantly changing colour and intensity furthering this point. Recent advances in brain research demonstrate that we have the ability to reshape and strengthen our neural connections – a huge paradigm shift that empowers us to be active participants in our brain health. I hope to be a part of this conversation and to inspire people young and old to take active steps to benefit their brains.” Garry Foster, president and CEO of Baycrest Foundation, noted the number of people with Alzheimer’s disease is set to rise dramatically as the baby boomer population ages in the coming decades. “The impact will be huge – on families, the healthcare system and the economy,” he said. “This is our area of expertise, a place where we’re already making a difference. Baycrest is a leader in finding ways to keep brains healthy. Our researchers continue to discover more about what we can all do
throughout our lives to potentially reduce our risk for Alzheimer’s and related dementias. We’re excited that The Brain Project is helping to spread the word, and make people more aware of the importance of their brain health – whatever their age.” Inspired by New York’s Fabergé Big Egg Hunt, Erica Godfrey, cochair of The Brain Project, said the fundraiser expands the role of art programing at Baycrest, while highlighting brain health. “Three of my husband’s grandparents lived at Baycrest and we are firm believers in what they do,” she said. “Art plays a fundamental role in Baycrest’s continued care and rehabilitation of its residents so we knew this would be an amazing project for them to lead. The Brain Project expands the role of art at Baycrest in a very organic and meaningful way.” To find a brain sculpture location, visit www.brainproject.ca

If you remember recess... you’ll remember the joy of racing from behind your school desk and picking up a bat, ball, skipping rope or marbles. Of going from what you had to do to what you wanted to do. We remember too. That’s why Tridel created Delmanor retirement communities. It’s your opportunity to leap into an active retirement. We call it the Delmanor experience. You’ll call it continuous recess. Come tour our community and discover recess in retirement... that’s the sound of the bell. Baby weighs in at seven pounds, 14 ounces >>>from page 1 and a few pushes later, the baby was born. “It was pretty special. The pride level was quite high,” Pascal said. Baby Madelaine made her entrance at 10:11 p.m., weighing in at seven pounds, 14 ounces and surrounded by flashing emergency lights. Despite the unusual circumstances, Lisa noted she had a very positive birthing experience. “And it was private. It was just me and my husband right to the end, until the last two pushes.” Pascal had planned to experience the birth as a father, not a paramedic. “It happened so quickly, I really didn’t have a choice,” he said of putting his skills into action. How does Pascal feel about delivering his own baby? “Well, my wife did the work. I just assisted,” he said. Paramedic supervisor Supt. Application for permanent status as refugee could be expedited >>>from page 1 September 2015, with that application currently before IRCC. If her application is approved, she will be eligible for OHIP coverage. “It’s too much stress,” Johnson said, adding her entire family is in Jamaica. A GoFundMe page was set up Wednesday, May 4 with the goal of raising $10,000 to help Johnson pay for medical expenses. As of the afternoon of Wednesday, May 18, $290 had been raised. “If it will help, I appreciate it,” said Johnson, who rents a room in a Driftwood

According to the IRCC’s website, permanent residency applications filed under humanitarian and compassionate grounds can take up to 40 months to process, but IRCC spokesperson Jessica Seguin said that time frame “may not apply in this case”, adding she could not give an exact time frame. She also noted the IRCC is awaiting documents from Johnson before the expedited application process can proceed, though she wouldn’t go into specifics. “Once Ms. Johnson has

Public meetings on waterfront transit Two public meetings are coming up this month to discuss transit proposals for the waterfront. Waterfront Toronto and city officials will present preliminary design and planning concepts for possible new, yet currently unfunded, transit routes which may include the East Bayfront LRT. Two meetings are scheduled for the study, with the first taking place Wednesday, May 25 at Brigantine Room inside Harbourfront Centre starting at 6 p.m. Another meeting takes place in Mimico the next day at John English Junior Middle School at 95 Mimico Ave. at 6 p.m. CHANCE TO TAKE wLAST IN TUNNEL VISION
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT The Tunnel Vision subway exhibit is down to its final month. The installation inside St. Lawrence Market features photographs, maps and other artifacts from nearly 100 years of transit planning, dating well before the opening of the city’s first subway stations. Organized by the Toronto Transportation Society, the exhibit, which opened in February, closes June 11. OVER UBER, HERE wMOVE COMES APPLE
The legalization of Uber is well at hand, but could another tech giant one
day enter the ride-hailing market? It certainly seems like Apple is interested, with the company announcing last week it is investing $1 billion in a Chinese competitor of Uber, and acting as a “strategic” investor to the company, Didi Chuxing. It’s certainly conceivable Apple will never operate a ride-hailing service on its own. But the company’s deep pockets combined with the burgeoning growth of the industry could mean there’s a day when Apple-branded vehicles are providing private rides in this city, and rivalling Uber in popularity.
