Ghouls and goblins are gearing up to take over Sunnybrook Park for the fifth annual Monster Dash Sunday, Oct. 30. Toronto’s largest Halloweenthemed run, Monster Dash is raising money for World Wildlife Federation Canada again this year. The event takes place at Sunnybrook Park, 1132 Leslie St. The family-friendly fright night features adult and youth 5 km and 10 km walk and runs, and a spooky mile fun run for young kids. Participants of the 5 km and 10 km routes will be chip timed for prizing and finish results. All races start and end in the Wilket Creek Park area of Sunnybrook Park. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to show up dressed in their Halloween best. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. Visit www. monsterdash.ca for more information, including registration pricing and options.

Heddington Halloween haunt returns for another year

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Back when her son was just a toddler, Barbara Gordon got the idea to do something a little special for Halloween. She painted two large paintings based on Disney’s 101 Dalmatians, which she placed on her front lawn at 44 Heddington Avenue, to great acclaim from neighbours and trick-or-treaters alike. Encouraged by the feedback, Gordon decided to start a tradition, painting new panels and setting up creative displays based on different movies, TV shows or superheroes each year. Nearly two decades after her 101 Dalmatians paintings turned heads, her artwork has become a must-visit for families from across the city. “I love Halloween because it’s a non-denominational thing where everyone can enjoy it,” she said while taking a short break from this year’s Finding Dorythemed exhibit. “It’s a positive thing for everyone, and it’s a neighbourhood builder as well. People will come up and just talk to each other about the paintings.” While Gordon’s house features a different theme

Barbara Gordon finds Disney character Dory on Monday in the seascape erected outside her Heddington Avenue home, as part of her annual Halloween display. This year's 'Finding Dory' themed event will once again benefit SickKids Hospital.

each Halloween, paintings from past years always find a home on the lawns of neighbours, who are eager to turn Heddington

into Halloween central. Neighbours have also gotten into the act in other ways, pitching in to create the display on Gordon’s property.

This year, that display will include a giant cellophane “ocean,” fish, a papier mache sea lion and a giant octopus made of pumpkins.

“I was going to make it easy this year, but I’ve got to remember there’s never a n e a s y ye a r,” G o rd o n laughed.

The Finding Dory theme will be far more childfriendly than last year’s exhibit, which revolved around the hit television series The Walking Dead. For that one, zombies chased people down the street, and while it was a hit, Gordon wanted to do something that would appeal to younger crowds. Whether funny or frightening, her artwork always draws a crowd. Last year, she estimates about 900 kids came trick-or-treating, and Heddington Avenue was blocked to traffic to ensure safety. While handing out candy, Gordon also takes donations for the Hospital for Sick Children. This year, she hopes to surpass last year’s impressive haul of $3,000. For more information on the displays or to donate, visit http://www.barbgordonsings.com/halloween. html

Sunnybrook nurse named oncology nurse of the year FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Angela Leahey said she’s still processing being the recipient of the 2016 Boehringer Ingelheim Oncology Nurse of the Year Award. The professional leader in oncology nursing and m a n a g e r f o r a d va n c e d practice nurses in oncology and palliative care at the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Leahey was nominated by her peers for her lead in developing the nurse triage role and teletriage (a live voice nursing phone line) for cancer patients, initiatives geared toward quickly identifying patients in distress and with the

greatest need for nursing resources both in clinic and while at home. She was presented with the award, which recognizes the unique contributions of an oncology nurse who consistently demonstrates the highest level of nursing excellence and leadership, Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO/ ACIO) annual conference in Calgary, Alberta. “I’m absolutely thrilled,” she said. Leahey graduated from Laurentian University in 1991 and did her placement at Laurentian Hospital in Sudbury, landing in the oncology department.

“Everyone was trying to get into emergency or critical care,” she recalled. “With oncology, I was completely taken in. You learn all the IV skills, technical skills and at the same time, you’re dealing with mortality. You people who are in and out of hospital.” Leahey was hired on in the unit before graduation, staying on for two and a half years before finding fulltime work at Sunnybrook where she’s been for 23 years - 21 of those years in oncology. She’s seen a lot of change in her two decades working in oncology, including a greater complexity in treatment and fine tuning

chemotherapy treatment to make it more individualized. “We are pleased to recognize Ms. Leahey for the fifth annual Boehringer Ingelheim Nurse of the Year Award, and we acknowledge all the passionate and caring nurses like her who were nominated,” Richard Mole, president and CEO, Boehringer Ingelheim (Canada) Ltd., said in a release. “It is clear from Ms. Leahey’s work that she is a skilled innovator and leader, and it is nurses like her who help move this specialty forward.” The winner is awarded $5,000 towards further education and professional development.

n a few days our streets will be full of miniature ghouls, princesses and witches, excitedly going door-to-door to fill up their treat bags. At this time of year, however, it’s not just on Halloween that drivers and pedestrians need to be cautious of each other. The days are shorter and it’s usually under the cover of darkness that people busy themselves getting to and from work, or kids make their way to school. Last week Toronto police reported 18 pedestrians were hit on the road in one day - with one of those incidents resulting in a fatality. We’ve all seen that video from Pickering where the girl getting off a bus is nearly Our VieW little hit by a careless driver zooming past. Distracted The close call was enough to walking can make staff gasp in the newsroom. The reality is, for our streets to cause injuries be safer, both drivers and pedestrians need to change their ways. Drivers cannot be distracted. Put your cellphones away, don’t drive while juggling a burger, pay attention to what’s happening in front of and around your car. Watch crosswalks and check blind spots - particularly curbside - for approaching pedestrians or cyclists. For those on the sidewalks, attention needs to be on your surroundings too. As Peel Regional Police Const. Mark Fischer told us this week, “Just like distracted driving, there’s distracted walking that can cause injuries.” Make eye contact with drivers as you approach crosswalks. If it’s raining, use an umbrella so you can monitor the traffic around you. Adult and children pedestrians also need to be mindful of their appearance. Dark clothing limits visibility; choose reflective gear instead. Parents should talk with their kids about street safety and wearing the right clothing in darker hours. If children can walk with a parent, a friend, or in a group - all the better. Some neighbourhoods organize ‘walking school buses’ that pick children up at their front doors. It’s on all of us to change our behaviours and make the effort to keep pedestrians safe.

column

Do voters need a rest from byelections? What with the tenor of the presidential election nearing its close south of the border, maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that the good voters of northeast Scarborough are tired of being voters and would like a rest. Still, it was hard not to be a bit surprised when at the last council meeting Councillor Chin Lee suggested that some 900 residents of Ward 42 (Scarborough-Rouge River) were interested in abandoning their franchise until the next municipal election and seeing the seat vacated by long-time councillor Raymond Cho filled by council appointment. Lee said he had a petition of that size, asking for an end to what they called “musical chairs” between the various elected offices in Ward 42. There have been a lot of byelections there. Cho departed for Queen’s Park in the last one, this past summer. School trustee Neethan

david nickle the city Shan, a New Democrat, was recently elected to the Toronto District School Board in a January byelection, and ran against Cho in the summer. Perhaps, the petitioners worried, the enthusiastic legislator Shan (identified in everything but name in the petition) would do so again. And so with the support of Mayor John Tory, his executive committee members and really everyone else but the left-wing minority, council is waiting a month so that Lee (whose ward borders Ward 42) might consult further with the community. Sympathy for weary Scarborough electors aside, one can’t ignore the possibility that the majority wing of city council wants more of a say in the representation of Ward 42 (and one vote in 45) than a quick byelec-

tion - you know, the sort of thing that people expect in a democracy, two years out from a general election might otherwise allow. There’s going to be more of this as time goes on. On Wednesday, Mayor Tory’s executive committee had a look at the final report from consultants charged with recommending changes to Toronto’s ward boundaries for the next election. The meeting occurred after the deadline for this column, but the matter must still move to council next month and when it does, I predict a vigorous if occasionally arcane fight over the recommendation to add three new wards bringing the total to 47. Now, the discussion as to whether the number of politicians should be increased is a bit more nuanced: democratic representation can be balanced with 47 councillors, the current 44 or even the 22-member council that the late Rob Ford advocated. And

councillors do cost money. These ones would cost a total of $870,000 a year, with another $210,000 to set up the three city hall and constituency offices in the first year. Aside from the money, there is also the matter of all that debate. Those old enough to get tired of voting are also old enough to remember when Toronto Council had 57 members, just after amalgamation, and how exhausting that bunch was. Of course, the real answer is that whether we want to or not, the right to vote in an election and have one’s views and interests represented in government is important in itself - and as well as being a right, a responsibility. One might think that everyone should understand that.

Stay safe by being visible, police remind pedestrians DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The day after Toronto police reported 18 pedestrians getting hit on the roads, including one fatality, police are reminding pedestrians that they must watch out for cars as much as drivers should watch out

for them. A 63-year-old female pedestrian who was killed on a rainy Thursday, Oct. 20 in Toronto was the 35th pedestrian fatality of the year in the city. Over in Peel Region, police have reported eight pedestrian deaths so far this year in Mississauga and Brampton.

“Wear reflective clothing, reflective bands, footwear, jackets, anything is helpful,” said Peel police Const. Mark Fischer. “Put your cell phone away. Just like distracted driving, there’s distracted walking that can cause injuries.” He reminds pedestrians to pay attention when they are

walking. When it’s raining, use an umbrella. “Then you can keep your eyes up and you don’t need to be looking down. When you’re getting wet and cold, you often huddle downwards,” Fischer said. With the shorter daylight

Pokemon GO is holding an in-game Halloween event from Oct. 26 to Nov. 1.

Get more Candies in Pokémon GO’s Halloween event DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Pokemon GO players can get extra treats this Halloween season. Players are receiving more rewards during the in-game Halloween event that started Wednesday, Oct. 26 and lasts until Nov. 1. During the event, players are getting awarded with double the amount of Candies they normally would get. Players get six for catching a Pokemon, two for transferring a Pokemon to the professor, and double for hatching an egg during the event. A d d i t i o n a l l y, y o u r Pokemon Buddy will accumulate Candies four times faster than usual. For example, a Buddy that requires a player to walk 1 km. to produce a Candy, now only needs 0.25 km. In addition to extra Candies, players should expect to see more ghost type Pokemon when they’re out walking.

Why would a cemetery want you to live longer? THE MORE YOU LIVE, THE MORE YOU LEAVE TO REMEMBER. It’s not that we don’t like you. On the contrary. It’s because we want to see you get the very most out of life before you need us. Check the batteries in your smoke detectors. Avoid shark-infested waters. Skydive only with a certified instructor.

hours this time of year, children are now finding themselves walking to school in partial light. Fischer tells children to walk in groups, rather than alone. “Children of any age should always find a friend or family member, someone to walk with. That increases the rate of safety compared to walking alone,” he said. Walking in a group makes you more visible to drivers, but also makes you less likely to be approached by a dangerous stranger, he said. Children should avoid crossing in between intersections, and should stick to crosswalks, or lighted intersections to cross the road. For anyone wishing to make himself or herself more visible in the dark, Toronto-based Paisley Canada has a solution. The distribution company carries a Swedish-based product called Albedo100. The product is a reflective spray. It can be used on clothing, bikes and more, and it’s rain-resistant but washes off in a machine, and makes clothing reflective. “It increases your visibility,” said Bobbi Garrow, a territory manager for Paisley Canada and a Toronto mom of three. “It will increase the opportunity for drivers to see you. Cyclists can spray their helmets, clothes and use it alongside lights and reflectors. You can put it on any piece of clothing.” She and her children use Albedo100, and even a month after using the spray, a coat will remain reflective. She said the reflective spray can make you visible from 500 feet away to drivers, whereas you would normally be visible from only 80 feet. On Halloween night, she said parents can use the product on their children’s costumes to improve their visibility.

Toronto has Ontario’s fourth highest car insurance rate: study Toronto is the fourth most expensive place to insure your car, according to a list of Ontario’s 10 most expensive cities to drive. Toronto’s car insurance rate is 30 per cent higher than the provincial average.

In Ontario, the average driver pays $1,448 per year. A Toronto driver pays $1,886, according to a list prepared by online insurance marketplace Kanetix.ca. The numbers used for comparison are based on a single 35-year-old driver with

a clean driving record. Brampton is highest on the list, where a 35-year-old driver with a clean record pays approximately $2,392, which is 65 per cent more than the provincial average. Kanetix.ca notes there are

several variables that come into play when premiums are calculated, including driving record, make and model of vehicle, how likely it is the vehicle could be stolen, and where the driver lives. The lowest premiums -

around $1,000 annually - are found in Hawkesbury, Renfrew, Petawawa, Pembroke, Port Elgin, Kincardine, Smith Falls, Perth, Gananoque, Carleton Place and Brockville. There are also several cities where drivers pay premiums

estimated below the provincial average, according to the company, such as Whitby ($1,443), Windsor ($1,375), and Barrie ($1,366) to name a few. - With files from Pam Douglas, Brampton Guardian

‘Beautiful heartfelt messages from strangers’ More than $100K raised to help Ethan’s family

Left, Rachel Faria dresses her son Ethan, 2, with therapeutic stockings before getting his prostheses on for a physiotherapy session at the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com The first thing you notice about Ethan Faria is his mop of curly brown hair. The second thing is his chubby cheeks and big smile, the latter of which lights up when playing with firetrucks or munching on bacon, his favourite food. The almost two-and-a-half-yearold has come a long way since a bacterial infection claimed both legs, his left hand, and most of the fingers on his right hand. The then 14-month-old baby from North York was first admitted to North York General Hospital July 24, 2015 after his family doctor became concerned with what a chest X-ray showed after the youngster developed a slight cough and fever. After his lips began turning blue, the young child was rushed by ambulance to The Hospital for Sick Children. It was then his parents, Rachel and Humberto, were told by two doctors their young son may not make it. After three days of running tests, Ethan was diagnosed with Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) type B, a disease caused by bacterial infection. Typically the disease is mild, but severe infection can occur if the bacteria gets into certain areas of the body, including the bloodstream and brain. Ethan’s brain and heart were free of the infection. Ethan’s legs were amputated just below the knees, and soon afterwards surgeons removed his right hand just above the wrist and partially removed three fingers and the thumb on his left hand, leaving his middle finger. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, there are several types of Hi bacteria, with Ethan’s type B the most serious strand. Hi bacteria can be passed through coughs and sneezes from an infected person, or touching objects which were recently exposed to an infected person’s mucus or saliva, then rubbing your eyes, nose or mouth. After spending three months at Sickkids and enduring numerous skin grafts, Ethan was ready to come home. The transition wasn’t easy at first. If he was placed on the floor he would just sit there, and Rachel was resigned to the fact this might be their new reality for the foreseeable future - a reality which also included tube feeding Ethan and administering needles

twice a day to prevent blood clots. “It was very overwhelming to say the least,” Rachel said. “There were many days where I thought, is this the way our life is going to be like? You accept it and keep going.” But thankfully Ethan has flourished, learning to roll, crawl, and even feed himself. These days he can be found playing with cars or lining up his toys, spending time at the park, visiting animals at African Lion Safari, and watching his favourite shows The Wiggles, Paw Patrol, Barney and Friends, and Dino Dan. And in April, Ethan was fitted with prosthetic legs, which he is learning to use during physiotherapy sessions four times a week at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, which he has attended since January. He also uses a walker at both his Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue area home and at Bloorview. On the day The Mirror observed Ethan during a session, physiotherapist Lisa Engle and Rachel worked together to get Ethan into the prosthetics while he played with a firetruck, oblivious to the attention. Once his legs were on, Engle held Ethan up as he took several steps before the walker was brought over. “When he first came in he was deconditioned,” Engle said. “Our goals were to work on overall level of strength and transitioning from one position to another, like rolling, which contributes to his independence and getting around.” Ethan is now learning to sit, lie down, and stand with his new legs, and can use the walker on his own with supervision. “Our goal is getting him walking

around at home and walking around the community,” Engle said. “He’s the hardest working two-year-old I’ve ever met.” Rachel marvels at how independent her son has become, adding he also attends music and speech therapy at Bloorview. “He’s learning to talk again, walk again,” she said, adding Ethan’s speech development was halted during his time at Sickkids. “We will raise him to believe anything he wants to do, do it and not be afraid to do it. We look at Ethan and thank God he made it.” Knowing Rachel and Humberto faced financial distress due to Ethan’s situation, as she immediately left her customer service job when her son fell ill and has not gone back to work, solely relying on Humberto’s construction job income, her friends set up a GoFundMe page in August 2015 with the goal of raising $50,000. To date, $101,331 has been collected. “There were beautiful heartfelt messages from strangers,” Rachel said of the page’s comments. “This touched so many people.” The public will have a chance to meet Ethan when a children’s book inspired by him is launched Nov. 16 at Artscape Sandbox, 301 Adelaide St. West, from 6 to 9:30 p.m.Written by Kari Ward and published by Wire Publishing, a portion of proceeds from Marley and Maverick Find Ethan’s Magic Legs will go to the Faria family and to Sickkids. “He’s taught me anything is possible and to be the best mom I can be,” Rachel said of Ethan. “He smiles everyday.” To purchase the book visit www. ethansmagicbook.com

Former federal finance minister Joe Oliver will be running for Patrick Brown’s provincial Progressive Conservatives. Here, Oliver addresses his supporters at the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club after his defeat during the 2015 federal election.

Oliver to run provincially for York Centre seat Former federal finance minister Joe Oliver is throwing his hat into the provincial political ring. Oliver, who lost his seat in the riding of EglintonLawrence in last year’s federal election, will seek the Tory nomination in York Centre for the June 2018 provincial election. In a series of Tweets

Tuesday Oct. 25, Oliver wrote “Ont suffering too long from waste incompetence & scandals of Wynne Gov’t. Ont can be prosperous & secure again with Patrick Brown as Premier” and “Proud to run for nomination for Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario in York Centre We need change @ TorontoStar.”

Most importantly, you’ll stop worrying about your hearing and get back to enjoying conversations with your friends, colleagues and loved ones. Don’t wait any longer – A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation.

Oliver, 76, will challenge veteran York Centre Liberal incumbent Monte Kwinter, 85, the oldest MPP in Ontario history. The long-serving MPP was first elected to the Ontario Legislature in 1985 and is now in his ninth term. The Tories expect to nominate a York Centre candidate between December 2016 and February 2017.

Transit Project Assessment Process - Public Meetings

n Provincial funding for east-end Toronto settlement programs n Father-son duo close the book on tour of 100 Toronto public libraries

Our Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is now home to nearly 7 million people – heading towards 10 million by 2041. This growth is a sign of success and opportunity. But as we grow, so too must our transportation network – the lifeblood that connects this great region and each of our communities. Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, is bringing more transit and more connections to more places within the GTHA. Every community transit project, big or small, plays a vital role in the regional transportation system. We want to share our plans and get your feedback. Starting in November we will be hosting community open houses to share information and updates on three of Metrolinx’s projects to build new track and electrification infrastructure. We will be seeking your input on these specific plans and feedback on proposed mitigation strategies: GO Rail Network Electrification Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) (Hydro One as co-proponents): gotransit.com/electrification • Environmental Baseline Condition Reports have been prepared, Impact Assessment Reports to evaluate potential environmental effects of the project are underway, and stakeholder consultation is in progress. The project is currently in the Pre-Planning Phase of the TPAP. • The focus of this round of public meetings will be to provide an update on the project and conceptual design of the Traction Power Supply and Distribution components. Barrie Rail Corridor Expansion TPAP: metrolinx.com/RERBarrie • The environmental assessment studies are prepared, which include a detailed overview of impacts to evaluate the environmental effects of the preliminary design. The project is currently in the Pre-Planning Phase. • The focus of this round of public meetings will be to provide an update on the project and seek feedback on the environmental impacts.

French Programs at the TDSB Applications for Early French Immersion are open from November 1 to December 1, 2016. Information evenings run throughout November.

Lakeshore East-Don River to Scarborough Expansion TPAP: metrolinx.com/DonRiverScarborough • The project is currently in the Pre-Planning Phase with existing conditions studies completed. • The focus of this round of public meetings will be on existing conditions. These meetings will also include information on the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) which guides the work being done to transform the transportation network in the GTHA. A review of the RTP is underway, providing the opportunity to formally incorporate new insights into the plan, while ensuring we maintain momentum on the projects underway. Information updates on other key studies and projects in your neighbourhood will also be provided. We invite you to join us in person at the public meeting nearest you to find out more. (Or, participate online at metrolinxengage.com) Meeting time: 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. / Presentation: 7:00 p.m.

Scarborough light rail advocates are vindicated by a newspaper report stating misleading information was passed on to Toronto Council ahead of a crucial subway vote. The Toronto Star story states city and TTC staff presented misleading data for the seven-stop Scarborough LRT project, leading undecided councillors to support the onestop subway extension instead championed by Mayor John Tory and chief city planner Jennifer Keesmaat. In a statement to Metroland Media Toronto, Scarborough Transit Action says the story confirms “distorted facts and figures” were used to push through the $2.9 billion subway project. TRANSIT WANTS YOUR OPINION wGO

Got an opinion on GO Transit? The regional transit provider has launched an online survey to broach customer attitudes towards the service. GO wants feedback on its performance over the last six months and tips on to improve

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT for next year, from the service provided to the state of its bus terminals, along with customer service and safety. To sweeten the pot, GO is also giving away $50 fare vouchers to five survey respondents. The survey is open until Nov. 5. Email marketingresearch@ gotransit.com PITCH YOUR IDEAS ON BENTWAY’ w‘THE

The Bentway, the public space project planned for under the Gardiner Expressway, is looking for programming submissions. The 1.75-kilometre plan below the Gardiner between Strachan and Spadina avenues is promising to provide plenty of recreational options, including walking trails and cultural performances. From now until November 25, you can pitch your ideas for how to program the space.

Information sessions are also planned for November at the Fort York Visitor Centre. Visit www.thebentway.ca FOR BLOOR VIADUCT wBOLLARDS

Bloor Viaduct cyclists finally have some separation from the rest of traffic with the installation of “bollards” along the roadway. The Viaduct has had a painted bike lane since 2010, but only just received the added separation, which the popular cycling blog Biking Toronto notes has increased at least the perception of safety. “Instead of having traffic whip by you with only painted lines between them and you on your bike, these new bollards are not only a physical ‘thing’ but also a constant visual reminder to cars that the bike lanes are for bikes,” reads a recent post related to the new infrastructure. WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYING

Dear Sam, Please find below my thoughts around the great service that you provided: I was being relocated due to a job promotion, which is exciting and stressful all at the same time. With two teenage boys who needed to transfer schools early in the school year, time was of the essence. I was put in touch with Sam who immediately assessed our needs, wants, must haves and budget so we could start looking at houses right away. During our first house hunting trip I discovered that Sam had set up all the showings while out of the country on vacation, which was amazing that he would jump right in to help us. He walked us through several houses, provided us with insight into the Toronto area real estate market, which is very different than our previous location and gave us guidance as we searched for the perfect home for our family. Once we found the right house, Sam wasted no time to negotiate a deal that worked for us to secure the property, even in a tough competitive market. Throughout the entire process, Sam maintained fabulous communication with us to ensure we were always informed and updated through every step. He truly made us feel that our house search was important to him and he provided terrific customer service. Thank you Sam for sharing your knowledge, always being patient with us and for guiding us through this process to finding our new home. Great job! Rachael & Sam

Oct. 23. Police said they found an unconscious man behind the wheel with vomit inside and outside the vehicle. Police say they also recovered a loaded .45 calibre pistol inside the car.

Police search for suspect in two North York sex assaults Police are looking for a man after two women were sexually assaulted in the Don Mills Road and Sheppard Avenue area last month. On Sept. 24, a 20-year-old woman walking near Don Mills and Leith Hill Drive was approached from behind by a man who then

grabbed her and sexually assaulted her. Police believe the same man sexually assaulted a 37-year-old woman at nearby Trailside Drive and Lescon Road at about 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 29. The suspect is white, about 5’1”

to 5’6” tall with a thin build and wore a black hooded sweater with white and red stripes on the back and a blue and red bandana with stars on it. Anyone with information should call police at 416-808-7474 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

Tennyson’s RettSyndrome

When you throw food scraps in your Blue Bin, food residue and particles get soaked up by paper and can ruin large batches of otherwise good recyclables. In fact, last year an estimated 45,000 tonnes of organic waste and garbage was mistakenly put into recycling. Meaning a lot of ruined recyclables ended up in the City’s landfill. And that is a very bad thing indeed. Learn what goes in your Blue Bin and what doesn’t at toronto.ca/recycleright

SUBMISSION OF THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION REPORT DETAIL DESIGN AND CLASS ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT STUDY

Re-Alignment of Eastbound Off-Ramp at the Highway 401 and Leslie Street Interchange (G.W.P. 2061-13-00) THE STUDY The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has retained MMM Group Limited, a subsidiary of WSP Global, to undertake the Detail Design and Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) Study for the re-alignment of the eastbound offramp at the Highway 401 and Leslie Street Interchange, in the City of Toronto. The study location is identified in the key plan. Submitted photo

The Detail Design plan includes:

Amanda Joy (Mo) and Samantha Wan (Jen) star in Second Jen, premiering Thursday, Oct. 27 on City.

• Re-alignment of the eastbound off-ramp; • Replacement of the Metrolinx pedestrian bridge; • Upgrading of traffic signals at the W-N/S ramp terminal intersection; • Replacement of the noise barrier wall where impacted by construction.

Show stars two Asian female leads

During construction, traffic will continue to exit Highway 401 at Leslie Street using either the existing ramp or a detour ramp. There is the potential for short-term lane closures to accommodate construction activities, such as the intersection work at Leslie Street. The pedestrian bridge that provides access to the Oriole GO Station will be replaced during construction and will remain open, with the exception of a small number of short-term closures for specific construction work. THE PROCESS This project is following the approved environmental planning process for Group ‘B’ projects under the Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000). A Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) for Highway 401 from Leslie Street to Warden Avenue, which included recommendations for the re-alignment of the eastbound off-ramp at Leslie Street Interchange was filed on the public record in 2011 and received environmental assessment approval in April 2012. A Design and Construction Report (DCR) has been completed and is available for a 30-day public review period from October 25, 2016 to November 25, 2016 at the locations listed below. The DCR documents the detail design plan, construction staging, potential environmental impacts and proposed mitigation measures. >>>from page 1 That evolved into cowriting a script and selling the pilot to a network, which eventually became the six-part, Second Jen series. Joy, who studied music and film at Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts and contemporary studies at Ryerson University, credits a high school teacher for encouraging her to hone her script-writing skills following several school film projects. “I never thought of myself as a screenwriter,” she said, adding she considered getting into musical theatre but “fell in love” with film. Second Jen is different from most other shows currently on air because it stars not one, but two Asian female leads, a nod

to the diversity being embraced on Canadian television. Canadian sitcom Kim’s Convenience premiered in October on CBS, which centres on a KoreanCanadian family who run a convenience store in Toronto’s Regent Park neighbourhood. Little Mosque on the Prairie, which took a satirical look at a Muslim community living in Saskatchewan, ran from 2007 to 2012. But even though she’s pleased with how Canadian television has welcomed showcasing diversity, Joy hopes one day it won’t be a point of discussion. “I’d like to stop seeing it as an intentional choice,” she said. “I’d like to see it as just what’s normal.” Second Jen airs Thursdays at 8:30 p.m.

Emergency crews were called to Beecroft Road and Park Home Av e n u e a t about 7:30 p.m. Police said the victim was found lying face down on the ground, bleeding from the face.

Toronto Paramedic Services spokesperson Supt. Kim McKinnon said the man, in his 40s, suffered “an injury from being struck by a car” and was taken to a trauma centre in serious but nonlife-threatening condition. Police investigated on scene for several hours. - Andrew Palamarchuk

Canadian army invades Toronto’s western beaches Tamara Shephard tshephard@insidetoronto.com Some 51 reservists with Canadian Forces’ 32 Combat Engineer Regiment, based out of Denison Armoury near Downsview Park in North York practised their assault boat landings on Toronto’s western beaches last Saturday, armed with their C-7 rifles, and jumped off the inflatable crafts in pairs as if faced by an opposing force. The soldiers, in full green CADMAT digital camouflage combat uniforms, landed from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Sunnyside Park, Sir Casimir Gzowski Park and Hanlan’s Point Beach on Toronto Island. Soldiers were practising their core skills and techniques used on operations overseas and in response to domes-

tic emergencies, Lieut.-Col. Steven Boychyn, the regiment’s commanding officer, said. “We were practising our skills with the boats themselves and our waterman skills. “We work with the infantry and other Canadian Forces to help transport them over rivers and lakes,” Boychyn said. “It also helps us with one of our main tasks: building bridges.” Many of the regiment’s soldiers have engaged in similar landings in combat in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Eritrea, Boychyn said. In fact, the regiment built a number of bridges in the aftermath of Hurricane Hazel on Oct. 15, 1954, he added. Hurricane Hazel struck southern Ontario on Oct. 15, 1954.

Soldiers of 32 Combat Engineer Regiment (32 CER) practice assault boat landings on Toronto’s west-end beaches, as part of Exercise Arnhem Sapper. The landings were at Sunnyside Park, Sir Casimir Gzowski Park and Hanlan’s Point Beach, practicing the skills and techniques they would use on operations overseas and in response to domestic emergencies. The beach landings took place from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22.

In January 1999, the regiment’s soldiers, armed with large chainsaws, were pressed into service at home to help hydro companies during the

On Saturday, the soldiers’ assault boat landings garnered much public attention, Boychyn said, some people snapping photographs or asking questions. “By and large, people were saying, ‘Wow. That’s pretty cool,’” Boychyn said. “It’s good for us to reconnect with the community, especially as reservists. One of our

primary functions is to have good, positive relations with civilians.” Toronto police humourously advised the public Saturday of the regiment’s training exercises on Twitter: “PUBLIC ADVISORY: Canadian forces conducting armed simulated training exercises in the Beaches area. We are not being invaded.”

winter storm in which thenmayor Mel Lastman called on the Canadian Army to help. The regiment also responded to the ice storms of 1998 and 2013. Boychyn said his reservists hail from myriad civilian careers, including plumbers and electricians, police officers, firefighters and teachers.
