James Pasternak, which drew quite a bit of interest from those wishing to see North York thrive when it comes to the arts, Pasternak said. “It was standing room only,” he said of the Thursday, Oct. 22 meeting at Bathurst-Finch Community Hub which he cohosted. “People were interested in how we move forward declaring North York a cultural hot spot.” According to the city, the Cultural Hotspot program aims to provide opportunities for young people in underserved >>>CALENDAR, page 6

The city’s Cultural Hotspot program is coming to North York. The program will run May to October 2016, with the goal of highlighting arts, culture, and community in the area bounded by Finch Avenue, Hwy. 404, Lawrence Avenue, and Jane Street. Two community consultation sessions were held in October by Toronto Arts and Culture, North York Arts, and councillors John Filion and

Helen Lu Road named for community leader The City of Toronto has named a street after a tireless community leader in North York’s east end. Helen Lu Road, which intersects with Forest Manor Road near Sheppard Avenue East and Don Mills Road, was officially unveiled Saturday. The late Helen Lu, also affectionately known as Mama Lu, was a recipient of the Order of Ontario. She was a founding member of the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care. She volunteered for many other organizations, including the Hospital for Sick Children, the United Way, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Daily Bread Food Bank and the Canadian Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor Registry. She also did fundraising work for victims of natural disasters and famine in China, Haiti, Taiwan, Somalia and North Korea. She died in 2013 at age 82. The street name was unveiled by Don Valley East Councillor Shelley Carroll who had championed its naming after the woman who dedicated 40 years of her life to community work in North York.

ith fall’s darker days now taking hold, and the turning back of the clocks early this Sunday morning as we go back to standard time, pedestrians are at an increased risk of being struck by a vehicle on our city’s streets. Toronto police will be warning drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to be extra cautious once Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday. Caution should be the operative word at all times, but it’s especially important in these dark days of November as the number of incidents in which pedestrians are struck by vehicles rises significantly in Toronto. The first week of November last year saw five incidents in the city involving pedestrians being struck in one day (Tuesday, Nov. 4, two days after Daylight Savings Time ended). What we – drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and everyone else who uses our roads – need to do is be that much more aware of the dangers, focus on the safety of all, and take some basic precautions to increase the odds of everyone our view going about their day safely, but especially in the morning and evening rush hours. We can all That’s when the advancing take basic darkness, along with confusion to the time change in the precautions due morning hours, has its greatest impact on the roads. The most dangerous time of day is between 5 and 7 p.m., police say. Pedestrians being struck by drivers making left turns are the most common incident, as it takes a moment for driver’s eyes to adjust from the brightness of the headlights coming toward them to the darker intersection. This problem is made worse if the pedestrian crossing is wearing dark clothing. Obviously, pedestrians need to think about wearing brighter clothing and not to be distracted by cellphones while crossing the street. Along with the increased need for caution Sunday due to the time change, we also remind our readers to be extra careful on the roads Halloween night this Saturday as excited trick-or-treaters hit the streets. By taking a few moments to think, and being aware of the increased dangers, we can make this Halloween and November safer for all.

Trudeau’s election comes with lack of mandate Politics often seems a kind of echo chamber. Themes and movements bounce back and forth, distorting as they go but recognizable for longer than might make sense. It’s tempting to trace the election of Justin Trudeau’s majority back through the election of Kathleen Wynne, the improbable spectacle of an NDP government in Alberta – even the ascent of gentleman John Tory in Toronto – as a particularly resonant echo. nod to the left wing All of these elections mark a repudiation of the hard right conservatism exemplified by the nowformer Harper government, the Progressive Conservatives in Ontario, the depraved populism of Etobicoke’s Ford family, and a nod, at least, to the left wing big-government ideas that the New Democratic Party used to get behind.

david nickle the city In none of these cases, of course, is it a sea-change toward precisely those ideas. When Tory won the 2014 Toronto mayoralty race on a platform of big transit infrastructure and progressive social policies, he was closely followed by Doug Ford in support, leaving New Democrat candidate Olivia Chow in the dust. Similarly, Wynne and Trudeau may have their majority governments, but they didn’t mop the floor with their right-leaning opponents. Trudeau did very well, but it was hardly a rout. If Harper had chosen to stay, he would have led a healthy official opposition – a far cry from the electoral massacre visited upon the federal Progressive Conservatives

in 1993, when the caucus was reduced to only two. Lots of people supported Harper, and the Fords, and former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak in his plan to gut the public service. The common thread? Lots more people decided that they definitively did not want any of those politicians anywhere near the levers of power, and collectively sent someone else along instead. voter trust It’s a funny sort of mandate – not really a mandate at all, when you think of it – that makes it more difficult than usual to chart success. Do a plurality of people in Toronto really think Tory’s central campaign promise of building SmartTrack is a good idea, or are they just relieved to know that the Fords won’t be in power? Voter trust in Ontario

Premier Wynne is a big question, as her Liberal government embarks on a very Conservativesounding sell-off of Hydro One. And as for Justin Trudeau and the new Liberal government in Ottawa: do his supporters also support his deficitrunning plan, his support of Bill C-51 in some form or another, or whatever else the Liberals choose to bring about? Perhaps, but it appears from polls and the numbers that what Trudeau’s supporters really want is that he replace Stephen Harper. This is the downside of strategic voting. It is both a way of saying what it is that you don’t want, and not particularly caring about what it is you do. The echo is, as echoes often are, discouragingly empty.

Police urge motorists to be vigilant after clocks fall back As clocks go back an hour this weekend, police are urging motorists to pay extra attention to the roads. “With the change in time, we do ask that drivers be more aware of pedestrians,” Const. Clint Stibbe said. “Drivers in general seem to be doing a pretty good job in the first week after the time change. However, after that we do see an overall

increase in collisions right through until the middle of December.” About 1,400 pedestrians have been struck in Toronto so far this year, including 29 who have died. “We can cut our fatalities in half if pedestrians used marked crossings only,” Stibbe said. Police traditionally start to see a rise in collisions in late September. “In November it spikes,” Stibbe

said. “So longer nights are resulting in more collisions.” - Andrew Palamarchuk flags to cover Sunnybrook lawn wCanadian

Murals project has created one of Canada’s largest outdoor art galleries >>>from page 1 “The Bell Box Murals Project has created one of Canada’s largest outdoor art galleries, free to all and open 24/7,” said mural project program director Michael Cavanaugh, in a news release. The North York portion of the murals project included partners such as

StreetARToronto (City of Toronto), North York Arts, Ward 10 York Centre Councillor James Pasternak, Community Matters Toronto, and Bell Canada. Benjamin Moore Paint donated the paint. “Between the growing number of Bell box murals and other utility box murals, there is a growing awareness of these

anti-graffiti initiatives,” said participating North York artist Cresswell. “Most passers-by do not question painting the boxes, they are more interested in how they can get involved.”

Blue Jays Appreciation Day declared in Toronto Toronto is rallying around the Blue Jays once more, to congratulate the team on an outstanding season. Tuesday Oct. 27 was officially declared Toronto Blue Jays Appreciation Day by city council. Mayor John Tory issued the proclamation, encouraging everyone in the city to honour the team by wearing blue and white. “The Toronto Blue Jays captured the hearts of Canadians and became Major League Baseball’s (MLB) 2015 American League East Division Champions,” read the proclamation. “A potent offence that could not be tamed, outstanding shutdown pitching, an unforgettable MLB trade deadline week and an amazing post-deadline day run of 42 wins and 18 losses made this baseball season one of the most exciting seasons in Blue Jays history.”

The team reached the playoffs for the first time since 1993, finishing the regular season with the best record in the American League East and a MLBleading 891 runs and 232 homers. After falling behind 2-0 in the five-game American League Division Series, the Jays went on a dramatic run, winning three in a row to beat the Texas Rangers and advance to the American League Championship Series. They fell 4-2 to the Kansas City Royals, narrowly missing a trip to the World Series. “The excitement of Blue Jays fans was felt throughout the city,” the proclamation continued. “The City of Toronto would like to thank the players, coaches and staff for a wonderful year. We are extremely proud of the Toronto Blue Jays and look forward to an even better 2016 season.”

NOTICE OF INTENT EAST DON RIVER BEHIND 30 NORTHLINE ROAD EROSION CONTROL AND SLOPE STABILIZATION PROJECT CITY OF TORONTO Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has commenced a study to address riverine and valley slope erosion behind a City of Toronto maintenance yard at 30 Northline Road following the July 8, 2013 severe weather event. The study area includes the slope on the northeast side of the East Don River where ongoing erosion and slope instability have created a risk to existing infrastructure, including three one-story brick buildings and a greenhouse at the top of the slope. This study will evaluate and identify the preferred solution to provide long-term protection for the maintenance yard and surrounding structures at 30 Northline Road. This project is being planned in accordance with Conservation Ontario’s ‘Class Environmental Assessment for Remedial Flood and Erosion Control Projects’ (amended 2013), the approved process for this type of undertaking. The process includes public and stakeholder consultation, evaluation of alternatives, and identification of measures to mitigate any adverse impacts. If you have any additional inquiries or are interested in receiving further information related to this project, please contact the Project Coordinator by one of the methods below: Courtney Rennie Project Coordinator, Engineering Projects Toronto and Region Conservation Authority 1 Eastville Avenue, Toronto, Ontario M1M 2N5 Phone: (416) 392-9690 Email: crennie@trca.on.ca TRCA intends to proceed with this project pending the receipt of all necessary funding and approvals. Forty Carats is a light-hearted romp Many programs and events taking place that plays out like a television sitcom to honour Holocaust Education Week

E

ncore Entertainment goes out true to form with a charming and amusing production. Forty Carats tells the story of Ann Stanley, a middleaged real-estate agent and divorcee who meets Peter, a much younger man while vacationing in Greece. Their summertime fling is revisited when he shows up at her Manhattan apartment as an arranged date for Ann’s daughter Trina. As Ann tries to sort out her feelings, she has to contend with her meddling mother, an ex-husband and an overly amorous client. Forty Carats is a fun, light-hearted romp that is given an entertaining staging. Lawrie Hopkinson makes Ann a fascinating character, giving an assured performance as the somewhat insecure divorcee who clings to her romantic notions. As the motorscooter-riding Peter Latham, Dylan Maloney easily captures the free and easy youthful “live for the moment” attitude that makes his character so winning. He could easily be a perfect match for any of the characters he encounters, but his focus is most decidedly on Ann. Carmel Warman scores a

mark andrew lawrence front row centre number of laughs as Ann’s outspoken mother, Maud Hayes. The younger member of the family trio, Trina is played with refreshing perkiness by Allyson Landry. Richard Hoffman plays Ann’s ex husband, the very full of himself TV actor Billy Boylan. Billy provides many amusing moments throughout the show. Eddy Edwards is Ann’s client who is pushing to make their relationship more than strictly business. Eddy Isenberg plays up the overbearing character without making him thoroughly obnoxious. If it all sounds like a formula for a TV sitcom that is exactly how it plays. Jerrold Karch has directed the show in a style of the 1970s show Maude, which also dealt with divorce, multi-generational relationships and conflicts amongst various age groups. He keeps the pacing tight with only an occasional pause to give us a glimpse of the characters’ emotional standings. He also uses the ’60s setting to comment on that particular period with great affection. This sadly marks the

end of the line for Encore Entertainment. Under the leadership of Merle Garbe, this company has been offering enjoyable, affordably priced productions for local audiences. They have also served as a launching pad for many young performers who have gone on to appear on professional stages at Shaw and Stratford. I have been covering Encore’s shows since 1994 and always looked forward to seeing what Merle and her co-conspirators would come up with. I am distraught that with the final curtain falling on Encore, as it has on Angelwalk and Teatron, the Studio Theatre will be dark for so many weeks each season. Celebrate Encore Entertainment by taking in this very fine production of a popular ’60s play that has rarely been seen in recent years. Forty Carats is playing in the Studio Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts until Sunday, Nov. 1. For tickets, visit www.encoreshows.com or call 416-8042722. Students make six-foot subs as part of Feed Tomorrow campaign DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com What’s the best part of making a six-foot long sub sandwich? You get to eat it when you’re done. That’s exactly what students did in 18 schools across Toronto to kick off Feed Tomorrow Week last Tuesday. “I’m very hungry. I want to eat it right now and the bread is so warm,” said Grade 6 student and sandwich-maker Vicencia Boadi at Rockcliffe Middle School, as she was laying slices of ham, cheese and vegetables on the large baguette. Vicencia was among a group of students who are regular participants of beyond 3:30,

an after-school program put on by the Toronto Foundation for Student Success. To kick-off Feed Tomorrow Week, students in the program made sandwiches during the ACE Bakery Student Snack Down Event. Jennifer Cabral, an ACE Bakery staffer and the company’s fundraising campaign chair, said ACE Bakery and its staff are supporters of numerous charities and beyond 3:30 was a great fit because of its food component. Last year, ACE Bakery staff raised $25,000 for beyond 3:30. Beyond 3:30 offers a variety of programs, from homework support to sports and physical fitness, to the arts and much more, five days a week. Students also participate in a

junior chefs program, where they learn to make economical and wholesome meals, then

they eat it and do the dishes too. Making a six-foot long

sandwich allows the students to learn how to make variations of a meal, said Sandra Lett, nutrition coordinator at Rockcliffe Middle School’s beyond 3:30 program. “The kids are going to be getting a good breakdown, in terms of variation, how you can make one type of bread for a variation of sandwiches,” Lett said. Beyond 3:30 has 1,400 participants, said Shannon Quesnelle, associate director of development and communications at the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, an arms-length charity of the Toronto District School Board. She said any student attending the 18 participating schools can register.
