Toronto Public Library card holders now have the opportunity to visit the Aga Khan Museum for free. That’s because the North York museum has been added to the library’s Sun Life Financial Museum + Arts Pass (MAP) program, giving residents a chance to check out the venue for free. “We see the MAP pass as an excellent way not only to introduce the museum to library patrons, but to also encourage them to develop an ongoing relationship with this museum, its park and everything else it has to offer,” said Aga Khan Museum director Henry Kim at an event announcing the addition of the museum to the MAP program Tuesday. The Aga Khan Museum is now one of 18 museums and cultural attractions across the city that are part of the MAP program. Aga Khan Museum MAP passes are available at 50 branches across the city. DEAL RATIFIED, YORK U. STRIKE OVER ◗Members of Local 3903
of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which includes teaching assistants, contract faculty, graduate assistants and research assistants at York University, voted to ratify the latest offer from the university this week, ending a strike that began March 3. The deal passed Tuesday with 94 per cent in favour. Classes were expected to resume yesterday.
Hot Pot cookbook reflects Bathurst-Finch culture FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com With a plethora of cultures nestled in the Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue area, coupled with an aging population, a group of community agencies thought a good way to socially engage seniors while celebrating different ethnicities would centre on food. The group gathered about a year ago to put together a needs assessment on how to engage low-income seniors through food and culture. The idea of creating a cookbook full of recipes provided by the seniors was pitched to North York Harvest Food Bank (NYHFB), which operates the Bathurst-Finch Community Food Bank out of Northview Heights Secondary School at Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue. The food bank serves about 700 households a month, mostly Russianspeaking seniors. Once NYHFB was on board, an editorial committee made up of nine people of Iranian, Russian, Italian, Jewish, Caribbean and Indian backgrounds was put together to come up with a vision for the cook-
All the recipes in ‘Hot Pot’ were provided by food bank clients.
book, how to get the recipes, and how to determine what went into the book. They asked older clients of the food bank to contribute hand-written recipes to be put into a box. Roughly 60 recipes were collected, double what was expected, said Lara McLachlan, director of community engagement for NYHFB, adding recipes contained ingredients supplied by the Bathurst-Finch Community Food Bank. A group of 18 taste-tasters was then formed, who cooked and sampled the recipes using Unison Health and Community Services’ kitchen in the nearby Bathurst-Finch Community Hub. Unison provided dieticians to work with community groups to pro-
mote good health through focusing on nutritious food and helping to run community kitchen groups; Circle of Care provided transportation for seniors to take part in the taste-testing and cooking sessions; and Toronto Public Health offered a dietician to help review and test the recipes. In total, 48 recipes were selected for Hot Pot: A Collection of Bathurst and Finch Recipes. Launched March 19 at the Bathurst-Finch Community Hub, the cookbook offers breakfast, dessert, main dishes, salads, side dishes, soup, and vegetarian recipes, all of which are translated into Russian. Five hundred copies of the cookbook have been printed and are available for free at NYHFB, 640 Lawrence Ave., McLachlan said. Those interested in obtaining a copy can email lara@northyorkharvest.com The project was funded through the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.

3 cloves garlic, chopped 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tomatoes, chopped 2 tsp tomato paste 1/3 tsp turmeric 1 egg, beaten salt and black pepper to taste
1. Grill the eggplant in the oven or on top of the stove. 2. When ready, set it aside and cover with paper towels (so skin comes off easier). 3. Peel the eggplant, then chop it finely with a knife or in the blender. 4. Fry the chopped garlic in oil, add eggplant, chopped tomatoes, tomato paste and turmeric. 5. Add salt and pepper. Fry until the excess water is gone. 6. Beat egg well with a fork and fry separately until half cooked. Add to eggplant mixture and fry further for one to two minutes. 7. Serve with warmed pita as an appetizer or with basmati rice for a delicious vegetarian main course.

Countdown to Pan Am Games Y
esterday marked the start of the 100-day countdown to this summer’s Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. Part of the celebrations held to mark the occasion at the Athletes’ Village in the West Donlands included a citizenship court for 100 new Canadians, including North York boxer Arthur Biyarslanov who will be taking part in the Games. The past month has seen enthusiasm for the Games begin to build across not only the Greater Toronto Area, but the province and country as well. The March announcement of the Pan Am Games Torch Relay, which starts May 30, will see the Games’ torch visit communities across Canada before settling in to tour Toronto’s neighbourhoods just prior to the opening of the Games on July 10. A number of high-profile athletic events in the city are also helping raise excitement. The Swim Canada trials to select the members of the Canadian our view team that will take part in the Pan Am Games are taking place Approach at Scarborough’s CIBC Pan Am/ Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and generates Field House through Saturday. excitement This meet will feature Canada’s top swimmers. Last week, the Scarborough pool hosted the Can-Am ParaSwimming Championships, which helped select the members of the Canadian team to take part in August’s Parapan Am Games. Both these events are examples of the many legacies the Games will leave Toronto. As well last week, residents could take in some of the world’s top wheelchair basketball teams at the Americas Challenge at the Mattamy Centre. That tourney saw the Canadian men’s team, the defending Olympic gold medal champs, in action at the court they will compete on in the Parapan Am Games. The Mattamy Centre will also host the Pan Am Games basketball, which should see a very strong Canadian men’s team including some top young NBA players from our country. There’s lots to get excited about as the Games approach. We at Metroland Media Toronto are looking forward to all of the events planned and will have extensive coverage of the Torch Relay, the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, and everything leading up to them. For more information on the Games and to view our coverage, visit our website at bit.ly/1szGJmU

An update on what kids are thinking today It seems like everybody at work has young kids. It’s always a lot fun when they bring them to the office and I get a kick out of listening to parents talk about them, too. Little ones have been the topic du jour around here since March Break, so I thought I’d provide an update on how they’re doing. What they think is their official bedtime: They’re not quite sure. When they think their bedtime should be: That they are sure about. They’d like it to be later. Much later. And that it should be mandatory to have one big book and two little books read to them before they hit the sack. How would you describe kids’ attention spans: Same as adults. They’re long if they’re interested in what they’re doing. If they aren’t interested in what they are doing, their atten-
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY tion spans are short. Is it possible to outsmart kids: Yes, but it takes a little ingenuity. Is it possible to get them dressed in less than a couple of hours: Also, yes, but it takes an awful lot of ingenuity. On saying please and thank you: They have to be reminded to do that. Constantly. Just like adults. Why kids need to go to the bathroom right after you leave home, yet when you asked them a zillion times before you left, they insisted they didn’t have to go: They say they don’t know – and I believe them. Why a toy they had no
interest in a few minutes earlier they suddenly want to play with the moment they see their brother or sister playing with it: They say they don’t know – but that I don’t believe. What about humour: They love to laugh. Their reaction to seeing another kid crying: It makes them want to comfort them. What happens when they hear somebody in the room pass gas: It makes them giggle. Just like adults. What they think about cellphones and tablets, Part I: They get antsy watching mommy or maddy yakking or texting on devices instead of paying attention to them. What they think about cellphones and tablets, Part II: They want to know when
you’re going to buy a cellphone and tablet for them. Getting their choice of ice cream or candy or chocolate chip cookies: Yummy, yum, yum. Being told that they’d have to eat all of their vegetables first: Figures. We knew there had to be a catch. Why they say they have a tummy ache: It’s not from inhaling too much ice cream, candy and chocolate chip cookies. Or being forced to eat all their vegetables first. The tummy’s not actually upset, in fact. It’s just a euphemism for feeling left out or feeling ignored or feeling sad. You know, the same reason adults say they have a tummy ache. the north york mirror examines a local issue
our exclusive look
questions with ryan noble The Mirror speaks with the new executive director of the North York Harvest Food Bank by FANNIE SUNSHINE
Photo/Courtersy
4 What are your plans and top priorities for NYHFB?
1 Tell us about your involvement with NYHFB prior to becoming executive director?
I’m not in a place to articulate a grand, long-term vision. The immediate focus is the relocation of our office in May (from John Polanyi Collegiate Institute at 640 Lawrence Ave. near Allen Road to 116 Industry St. near Black Creek and Trethewey drives). The catchment area will remain the same, the name will remain the same, there will be no impact to service. We are expanding our fridge and freezer capacity and will offer a higher degree of fresh produce and food. Our lease was up with the Toronto District School Board and they chose not to renew it. (A TDSB spokesperson confirmed the lease was not renewed as the school required additional space for its growing student body).
I was on the board of directors. Food has always been a passion of mine. I was raised in an Italian family and food was the medium in the household.
2 What made you decide to seek the executive director position? It was not part of the plan. Anette (Chawla, former executive director) announced her resignation and I stepped forward.
5 What areas of the food bank do you feel needs revamping?
3
We are looking at continually improving the board.
You come from an aerospace background. Why make the jump to the food industry? I pursued a degree in education with a focus on food sources. I worked for 14 years for Bombardier in Downsview. Then I had a career vocation as I am passionate about issues around food politics.
6 What are some of the challenges you feel are facing the food bank? We struggle strategically as we are an emergency food provider and what can we do in the longer term in that sense. It’s something we are looking into.
background: Ryan Noble took over the reins March 9 from Anette Chawla, who held the position for six years. After completing his bachelor in commerce from Queens University, Noble focused his career in the aerospace industry, working to develop new business, growing and transforming Bombardier, both locally and abroad. While completing his masters of education at the University of Toronto, Noble was able to combine
his business expertise and his passion for food security into the research and application of communitysupported agriculture and alternative food systems. Prior to accepting the executive director role, Ryan served as a member of the NYHFB strategic planning committee before joining the board. On the board he served as vice-chair, a member of the finance committee and chair of the relocation committee.
how you can help: DONATE FOOD
North York Harvest accepts nonperishable donations at more than 20 year-round drop-off locations. During major drives, non-perishable food donations can also be dropped off at local firehalls.
HOST A DRIVE
Each year, individuals and groups organize creative drives within their offices, schools and communities. NYHFB can support food or fundraising efforts by providing organizing ideas and offering free promotional materials and donation bins.
DONATE TIME
There are a variety of ways people of all ages can volunteer their time and share their skills to support their community.
DONATE FUNDS
There are several ways to make a financial donation to the food bank. You can donate online, or use your credit card to make a one-time or monthly online donation. For more on the North York Harvest Food Bank, visit www. northyorkharvest. com

Homeless pets seek new best friends
Library passes give access to attractions across Toronto
In this month’s column you’ll meet Franny and Fred, both eight years old and looking for love. Franny is a sweet Jack Russell terrier who needs pampering and Fred is a reserved feline who would like some TLC. Not only do these two needy pets have age and needs that are the same, they have the same request and goal: a new best friend. Life had not been good to Franny until a recent intervention. “She is a true delight and she still loves people despite her past. We want to see her pampered and cherished from here on in,” said Astrid Ramirez, president of Save Me Rescue. Franny, who is spayed and weighs 15 pounds, shadows her foster mom, loves playing ball, searching for treats and snuggling on the couch. She likes children, their energy and best of all - licking their sticky fingers!

Regular admission costs $20 per adult, or $15 per student, child or senior. “We are of course thrilled with our new partnership,” said city librarian Vickery Bowles at the event, held at the Aga Khan Museum at 77 Wynford Dr. “Families from across the city can experience this wonderful addition to the MAP program and to Toronto’s rich cultural experience.” Since launching in 2007, the MAP program has resulted in more than a million free visits to local attractions. Kim said joining the MAP program is an extension of the Aga Khan Museum’s mission. “We are at our core an educational institution,” he said. “Our aim is to share knowledge with as many people as possible, to welcome all Torontonians to

Unethical breeding left this sweet dog with condition that makes her legs shake. Her veterinarian says she’s likely had this since puppyhood and although it may progress, for now she does well and is not in any need of medication. Franny is best suited to a quiet home with no other pets and with people who are home during the day. If you are interested in adopting Franny, contact Save Me Rescue at www.savemerescue.com Fred is a neutered male domestic short-haired cat who was found as a stray and taken to the shelter in early March. Tory’s fortunes lie in the hands of city’s provincial, federal cousins It may well be that when all the accounts are in, the success or failure of Mayor John Tory’s debut term as mayor will be decided by factors entirely beyond his control. To a degree this is so with most political leaders. A moribund federal government can be buoyed by a robust economy; a competent provincial government, sunk by a collapse in the markets. And a mayor, particularly in a city like Toronto, succeeds or fails based on the actions of both of those levels of government. If goodwill flows from above, it will rise from the electorate. Of course, a smart mayor can make lemonade with a stack of lemons from unfriendly governments. But Tory has, through both the city’s circumstance and his own declarations, tied his own hands. Firstly, Toronto has great and immediate need for moneys beyond its means. The Spadina subway extension is in need of $150 million
david nickle the city more in order to be finished, and neither the province nor the federal government has shown willingness to assist. On Monday, Tory affirmed his election promise to deal with the repair backlog at Toronto Community Housing – spending $864 million over the next decade to fix the housing stock, and asking other levels of government to help. And that’s just this week. Toronto will need billions of dollars from the provincial and federal governments if it is to move ahead with Tory’s SmartTrack plan. Toronto really did need some $86 million this year, to balance its budget, and didn’t get it. Tory is putting everything – literally everything – on his ability to work with Liberals provincially, and nominally Conservatives federally, and do so well enough to cause
gives subway closures a rest wTTC Fans of weekend-spanning subway closures will be dismayed to learn the TTC isn’t planning any more for its signal upgrade construction. The rest of us, however, can look forward to the end of multi-day construction delays needed for converting Line 1’s antiquated signal system. In fact, the TTC thinks it can reduce the required closures for the upgrades by half thanks to a “revised strategy” that, according to TTC spokesperson Mike Palmer, entails shifting contracts and work related to the $559-million infrastructure project. It will be four years – at least – before the work is complete. NUMBER TWO – congestion winWE’RE
Toronto is ranked the second-worst city in the country when it comes to traffic congestion, according to rankings released this week by the GPS manufacturer TomTom. The study, which comes from “historical” GPS data
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT found in the company’s traffic database, finds only Vancouver has more congestion than Toronto among the study’s ranking of worst Canadian cities for traffic. The 2014 data shows Toronto’s congestion rate increased slightly from 2013 and the average car commuter here spends at least 84 hours per year delayed in traffic – five hours above the national average. Istanbul, Turkey was ranked the worst city in the world for traffic. In comparison Toronto ranked 47th globally. PACHI takes a RIDE on THE TTC A certain rainbow-coloured porcupine took to the TTC last weekend to drum up attention for the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. Pachi the official Games mascot took an impromptu ride from Spadina to Union Station on one of the TTC’s new streetcars Sunday. He

them to let these billions flow. Tory believes it’s a good bet. Since before he even joined the race for mayor, his biggest selling point has been his ability to sell the city to a blue-chip Rolodex of government and business contacts. But if in a year or so nobody’s buying, Tory may have to do things that violate his other election-year brand: that of a fiscally conservative business leader unwilling to burden taxpayers with more taxes and fees. If he does those things he might be able to fulfill at least a portion of his agenda. But for people who voted for Tory in 2014, will the shift be acceptable enough to csupport him for a second term? Tory needs the federal and provincial governments to listen. His fate is in their hands.

The next time you’re in the subway system, you may be a muse to an artist’s creation. Ten artists did just that at selected stations, sketching commuters as they waited for their ride, or sat on the train. Now, the output of that exercise is on public display as part of Sketching the Line, a showcase organized by Art in Transit. You can view around 60 of the sketches until the end of April while they screen on the Pattison OneStop video screens, found on most subway platforms. We invite you to join us at two upcoming public meetings where you can comment on the current phase of the Environmental Assessment on the future of the Gardiner Expressway East. The Study Waterfront Toronto and the City of Toronto are jointly carrying out the Gardiner Expressway / Lake Shore Boulevard Reconfiguration Environmental Assessment (EA) and Integrated Urban Design Study. The EA will determine the future of the Gardiner Expressway East and Lake Shore Boulevard East, from approximately Jarvis Street to approximately Leslie Street. The study area for the EA is displayed on the map below. The four alternative solutions that have been considered to date are: • Maintain the elevated expressway; • Improve the urban fabric while maintaining the existing expressway;
• Replace with a new above-or-below grade expressway; and, • Remove the elevated expressway and build a new boulevard.
In the last phase of the EA, the evaluation of the alternative solutions concluded that the remove option best met the evaluation criteria. Following direction from the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee of Toronto City Council, the upcoming public meeting will share the results of the following work: 1.
Review the remove option under the EA process to mitigate concerns about traffic congestion.
2.
Prepare an additional hybrid option that combines the maintain and replace components to preserve expressway linkage and functionality between the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway, and evaluates it against the EA criteria and the following: • Transportation functionality; • Public transit components; •
Impacts on key economic sectors;
•
Environmental impact; and
•
Cost benefit;
•
Neighbourhood growth and compatibility
•
Future land use considerations;

Small devices being taken at participating locations until April 30 include: w Mobile and smart phones w Digital cameras w iPods and MP3 players w hand-held gaming
consoles (Nintendo 2DS/ 3DS, Sony PlayStation Vita) In addition, this year the company also launched a similar program for companies and organizations. TRUSTED FOR GENERATIONS
Il Paesano Pizzeria has been serving up pizzas and pastas in the Etobicoke area since 1959, and it’s still a neighbourhood staple. The family-owned business uses the original recipes and the freshest ingredients available. As if fresh sauces and dough made daily in-house weren’t enough to draw people in to take a bite, Il Paesano has been distributing flyers with the Etobicoke Guardian for the past 20 years. “It’s a great paper that people in the area definitely read and take note of what’s inside,” says owner Nino Casale. “Every time we send out a flyer we see a huge increase of sales that very weekend!”
