Jamie Young knows first-hand how even the smallest acts of kindness – like holding open a
door – can make a big impact. With the stress and anxiety that comes with taking exams and applying for post-secondary studies, the Grade 12 York Mills Collegiate Institute student is
well aware that a lot of her peers feel overwhelmed. And as project manager for the York Mills Road and Leslie Street area school’s Kindness Week, organized by her busi-
ness management class, she’s hoping the initiative will raise awareness of the benefits good deeds have on mental health and wellness in schools and >>>KINDNESS, page 11
North York’s multi-awardwinning author of Holocaust books for young readers Kathy Kacer is thrilled her second play is featuring some pretty wellknown actors. Even more thr illing is that one of them is her son, Gemini Award-winning actor Jake Epstein (Degrassi: The Next Generation, Broadway’s Spider-Man and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) who also co-wrote the play Therefore Choose Life. “The opportunity to work with my son was probably one of the most remarkable experiences I’ve had,” Kacer said. Therefore Choose Life, written by Kacer and Epstein, is being presented by the Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, 5040 Yonge St., from April 23 to May 10. Alongside Epstein, the cast features Genie Award-winner Sheila McCarthy (Little Mosque on the Prairie), Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company coartistic director Avery Saltzman, >>>PLAY, page 11

Strong Raptors play strengthens Toronto, videographers show ‘We The North’ co-created by North York fan DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The Toronto Raptors are in the playoffs for a second year in a row and a huge fanbase is hoping for strong play this year from their team. Among those fans is North York-raised Andres Ramirez, a 25 year old who has been a Raps fan since day one. He and videographer Steven Lopez have found other fans across this city to ask them what the Raptors’ We The North movement has meant to them for a 10-minute video called WTN Tribute. “It’s a tribute to We The North. It sums up what the

whole movement has done for the city,” said Ramirez, who now lives just north of the city at Steeles Avenue and Bathurst Street. “It brought a lot of tourism, it made the Toronto name
bigger than it already was, in the music industry and in the sports industry. A lot of basketball players from Toronto are getting recognized as well.” He pointed to Andrew
Wiggins and Anthony Bennett, two Toronto-area-raised basketball players who went first overall in the past two NBA drafts. The video features interviews with six individuals, from different walks of life, about how the We The North movement has impacted them and how they celebrate the Raptors. There is also footage from Raptors games, commentators’ discussions and more. Ramirez said he and the others involved in the video are trying to capture what the Raptors have done for the city. The Raptors currently trail the Washington Wizards two games to none in the playoff series. Game 3 is set for tomorrow .

Police officer hailed a hero for saving life of man wounded in Driftwood mass shooting ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com A 31 Division police officer is being hailed a hero for saving the life of one of five people shot at a North York townhouse complex last Thursday. Sgt. Steve Hicks of the community response unit was leaving a youth sporting event in the Jane and Finch area when he heard the shooting call come over his radio at 5:50 p.m. on April 16. The sergeant arrived at 404 Driftwood Ave. within minutes and performed CPR on
a man in his 30s. The victim was revived and is receiving treatment at Sunnybrook hospital. “He directly saved someone’s life,” 31 Division Supt. Tony Riviere said of Hicks. “One of the doctors at Sunnybrook pretty well said that the person who initially administered CPR to that individual saved his life.” Riviere noted Hicks has “a long and decorative history of service” in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood and knew some of the shooting victims. Four people face attempted

murder charges in connection with the shooting, which sent a woman and four men to hospital with gunshot wounds. Two victims remain at Sunnybrook. One is listed in critical condition. Police said several people were standing out front of a townhouse at 404 Driftwood when a group approached and fired numerous rounds. Four people were arrested on Elmhurst Drive near Islington Avenue in Rexdale about 25 minutes later. One suspect was shot by police during the arrest and was taken to hospital for treat-

ment of serious but non-lifethreatening injuries. Police haven’t established a motive in the mass shooting. Riviere said there’s no evidence to suggest the victims were involved in any illegal activity. The victims are in their 20s and 30s. Some were residents of the townhouse complex while others were visiting friends. Akeem Bailey, 25, Clifton Vassel Youria, 29, and Maurice Smith, 21, all of Toronto, and Daniel Duarte-Alvarez, 20, of Mississauga face a string of charges, including five counts of attempted murder.

T
oronto’s new police chief, Mark Saunders, is going to be hearing from a lot of people telling him how he should do his job. The one voice he most needs to listen to is his own. He is a 32-year veteran of the Toronto Police Service, most recently serving as deputy chief prior. He has also served in a number of high-profile units including guns and gangs, and homicide. Saunders also makes history as being Toronto’s first black police chief. He said he understands many may view that as meaning he can magically improve the relationship between our view police and the black community, which has been strained Mark Saunders due to the “carding” policy critics say unfairly targets is a police chief, that black youth in the city. However, he warned resinot a politician dents at his introductory press conference at police headquarters that he does not have “superpowers.” Fair warning, and the right approach, we believe. Saunders has to be careful in these first few weeks about overpromising and making people think he will change things done by the outgoing chief, Bill Blair, that were considered unpopular. He needs to remember he is a police chief, not a politician. That, of course, won’t stop the politicians from coming after him if we won’t bend to their will. Saunders can have an impact by reaching into Toronto’s different communities. Blair held numerous town hall meetings hosted by the various police divisions, which were usually well attended but rarely confrontational. This wasn’t enough to convince some of the city’s communities he was a chief of the people, understanding life in the streets. Saunders must get this message through. He must be highly visible to residents. He must show an intimate understanding of the daily challenges of life in marginal neighbourhoods and he must motivate the leaders in these communities to advocate on his behalf. Saunders should go a step further and attend town halls organized by youth groups and organizations representing multicultural communities. Having visibility and compassion for circumstance will go a long way to winning the trust and respect in the neighbourhoods and communities where he needs it most.

Sad Leaf fan discovers his smile Mario, a long-time Leaf fan who has been down in the dumps since the NHL draft lottery Saturday night, called Sunday evening while I was watching Game 3 of the Montreal Canadiens/ Ottawa Senators series. Mario: “I need your help, Jamie. I haven’t been able to crack a smile since we didn’t get Connor McDavid.” Jamie: “Who?” Mario: “Very funny.” Jamie: “You’re welcome. Glad I could be of service. Later, big guy.” Mario: “Very funny.” Jamie: “Hey. What can I say? It’s a gift. Now that I cured you, can I go now?” Mario: “Very funny.” Jamie: “Come on, man. Coach’s Corner is coming up. You know how cranky I get when I miss Grapes. Have your people call my people during the week and we’ll do lunch, OK?” Mario: “Very funny.” Jamie: “Oh yeah, I forgot. You don’t have people yet. You’re still working on your
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY first person. Have you tried Kijiji?” Mario: “Very funny.” Jamie: “Stop. You’re embarrassing me with all these compliments.” Mario: “I hate to break it to you Jamie, but when I say ‘Very funny’ I’m being sarcastic. As if you didn’t know.” Jamie: “Is that each time? Or just some of the time? Mario: “What do you think?” Jamie: “Beats me. Can I get a choice at least? Like: A, B, C, D and E, but not G?” Mario: “Very funny.” Jamie: “You mean I left some letters out?” Mario: “Is that the best you can do?” Jamie: “I get the feeling you want me to go back to the drawing board, right?” Mario: “Very funny.” Jamie: “You want me to go front to the drawing
board?” Mario: “Very funny.” Jamie: “Not middle to the drawing board, I hope. Who ever goes there?” Mario: “Very funny.” Jamie: “You don’t even want even in the same jurisdiction of the drawing board? What, what, what? Throw me a bone at least.” Mario: “Very funny.” Jamie: “What the heck did you come over here for again? For the life of me I can’t remember. This sudden preoccupation with drawing boards has made me completely lose my train of thought. It wasn’t to see if I could help you get over the Leafs losing out on Connor McDavid by any chance, was it?” Mario: “Who?” Jamie: “Very funny.” Mario: “Really? Now you’re making me blush.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at jamie.wayne@sympatico.ca

Heritage makes a city world-class To the Editor, Re: ‘Preserving our heritage requires city’s competence,’ Editorial, March 26. I read your fine editorial and it impressed me greatly. Toronto has long fancied itself as a world-class city. However, I do not believe that it is there yet. First, we have to look at the real world-class cities to see what they have that gives them this most desirable ranking. World-class cities all have one thing in common – historical sites. What has Toronto got that would make it a world-class city? Not much I’m afraid. Until we learn to preserve our historical artifacts rather than destroying them we will never have a world-class city. It is time we had sincere people in charge who really want to preserve the history of our community. Bill Tee

Toronto Tool Library sets up shop in North York
Do you have tools to spare? The Toronto Tool Library is looking for tools to populate the Downsview Library location.

To sweeten the deal, TTL founders are raffling off prizes for tool donations, including a lifetime membership to the Tool Library, annual Tool Library memberships, Makerspace memberships, workshops and more.

isitors to the Downsview branch of Toronto Public Library will soon have the option of signing out both books and power tools. In a first for the Toronto Public Library, tools will be available to borrow from a branch, albeit from a separate entity from the library, starting Thursday. The Toronto Tool Library (TTL) already operates two sites – one in Parkdale and one in East York – and wanted to offer its service in the suburbs, said Ryan Dyment, executive director of the Institute for a Resource-Based Economy (IRBE), a non-profit that runs the TTL as part of its mandate to foster a more sustainable economy. For an annual cost of $50, TTL members can access a wide range of hand, power and gardening tools for home renovations, repairs and projects. And anyone who has a Toronto Public Library card will get $5 off their yearly TTL membership, Dyment said, adding TTL members do not need to have a library membership to access tools. The TTL will be open at the Keele Street and Wilson Avenue area branch four days a week, with hours to

be determined, Dyment said. Members will have access to “thousands of tools,” he said, adding roughly up to 10 tools can be borrowed at once for three- to four-day stretches. “You move into a place, you need a drill, but you don’t use it regularly,” he said. “You need it to hang up a picture or build a shelf. Members can sign out tools as often as they want.” Since opening its doors at Parkdale ActivityRecreation Centre (PARC) two years ago, TTL has loaned more than 13,000

tools ranging from power drills and ladders to pressure washers and rototillers from that location and one at 1803 Danforth Ave., Dyment said. Most of the tools have been donated, and some are purchased based on demand, he said, adding items such as hammer drills and circular saws are less likely to be given away. “We are modeling (the Downsview site) the same as the other two sites, but the big difference is it’s in a library,” Dyment said. Several other branches were looked at to house the
TTL, but Downsview was ultimately chosen based on the available space and supportive staff, he said. Theoretical or small building workshops will be offered, such as Tools 101, Dyment said, adding he’s aiming to sign up 1,000 members at the 2793 Keele St. site. And he’s not worried people might forgo returning tools like they do books. “Of 13,000 loans, less than 10 tools have not come back,” he said. “It’s actually closer to five. And the market value of selling tools is so low. The risk (of theft) is low and I’m not worried.” The idea of opening a place where tools could be borrowed stemmed from a video Dyment watched about a library in California
that offered that exact service, he said. “I pitched it to my friends and they loved the idea,” he said. “We started going to different community events and PARC loved the idea. Then within six months of the first one opening, the second one opened.” Luidmila Cibic, head librarian of the Downsview branch, said they are always looking at ways to bring more people out to the site. “We are really excited,” she said of partnering with TTL. “People can borrow tools and do it yourself books at the same time. We hope this will attract a younger demographic to the library. We welcome everyone to Downsview library.”
Donate lightly used tools to either the location at 1499 Queen St. W. or at 1803 Danforth Ave. during opening hours until April 29. Donations of five hand tools or one power tool will get one raffle ticket to be used in the draw, which will take place April 30 at the Downsview library location. You can arrange for pickup of large donations by calling 647-965-5604. For more information, visit www. torontotoollibrary. com

Kindness Week brings to light what we should be doing regularly. But we get caught up in our own lives so it’s hard to spread kindness on a regular basis.”
This is the third year York Mills Collegiate has organized Project Kindness. The first initiative in 2013 came to light following the release of the 2011 student census by the Toronto District School Board, which noted 66 per cent of students in grades 9 to 12 said they felt stressed sometimes or all the time. In an attempt to lower the numbers, the business management students decided to focus their project on the promotion and awareness of kindness.

Holocaust survivors who immigrated to Canada in 1951, Kacer has written more than a dozen books, all of which focus on the Second World War and the Holocaust, both fiction and non-fiction. Kacer’s first book, titled Secret of Gabi’s Dresser, is based on her mother Gabi’s survival story of how she hid as a girl inside a cabinet in her home. That cabinet is now in Kacer’s home. That story, along with others like it of both her parents surviving the war – her father spent time in concentration camps and her mother in hiding – is what she heard growing up and which she shared with her own children, Jake and Gabi. It inspired her writing career. Her daughter Gabi is also an actor and musician. Her son, who has a busy acting career that takes him between Toronto and New York, also writes and he and

comparing TTC to global networks wSurvey Got a few opinions on the state of local subway service? You can make your feelings known by taking an international survey comparing the TTC’s service levels with that of 20 global subway networks. The survey was prepared by subway research agencies CoMet and Nova and consists of several questions related to customer service, safety, reliability and other factors. The survey takes about five minutes to complete, according to the TTC. Take the survey until May 10. Visit www.ttc.ca residents PROMISED LRT BY 2022 w905
A major transit infrastructure project was announced this week by the provincial government for the 905. Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca announced plans to build a 22-stop LRT line by 2022 connecting Mississauga and Brampton’s city centres. The Hurontario-Main LRT would stretch 23 kilo-

Construction crane operator Rob Mac was about to start his shift last Thursday at the L Tower site above Yonge Street and The Esplanade when he was greeted by the unexpected sight of a raccoon that had clambered up the crane – some 213 metres – in Mac’s words to “take a crap”. Mac is better known by his Twitter moniker @SkyJacked793 where he shares stunning and often surreal shots taken from his vantage point high above the Toronto skyline. Sweeter deal for food trucks Our new mayor spent last year campaigning on a great many things, but one of John Tory’s earliest causes was also one of his most common-sensical. It boiled down to this: What the dickens is wrong with a food truck at the side of the road? Tory raised the issue about a year ago, when the notably mayor-free Toronto Council was wrestling the deep philosophical question of how many food trucks can one fit on the doorstep of a restaurant. Council wasn’t sure. Owners of restaurants of the stationary variety thought there shouldn’t be any, as food trucks offered unfair competition. Food truck owners, meanwhile, called baloney, and pointed out that the rest of the world seemed to be able to sustain both fine dining establishments and roving food vendors. In the end, council supported a twisting knot of a compromise: food trucks needed to operate no closer than 50 metres to the front of a restaurant, should they park in pay and display spots
metres as the minimum distance between restaurants and food trucks. Tory and council could stand to relax that distance regulation even further. Food truck operators would of course be happiest with no distance requirements but would settle for 15 metres. All of which might make restaurant owners – particularly those with smaller restaurants that specialize in take-out – nervous about the competition. Food trucks do have one advantage, in that they can pull up stakes and set up somewhere else. A failing brick-and-mortar restaurant has no recourse but to close up. But restaurants on the edge have far more factors affecting them than the prospect of an RV-sized lunch counter pulling up outside for a few hours. And for the rest of us, a little more choice can only be a good thing.
david nickle the city downtown. Tory offered tacit support for the policy as council approved it, but made it clear he thought food trucks should be encouraged rather than restricted. No more red tape, at least not very much. The food truck industry could use that kind of TLC. Over the past year, the restrictions of the original policy were such that only 17 food trucks bothered to lay out for the $5,000-a-year licence. On Tuesday, Toronto’s Licensing and Standards Committee took a baby step toward that vision, on the one-year anniversary of the approval of the food truck bylaw. Licences need not be yearround affairs, and sensible food-truck operators who really only want to operate in warmer months can purchase them for a bit less. Fifty metres becomes 30

North York night move attracts overnight crowd DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com
Witnesses were treated to an overnight spectacle at Eglinton Avenue West and Allen Road when a pair of 400-tonne tunnel boring machines were pulled out of the ground and moved this past weekend. Both machines, one per night, were pulled out of a shaft on the west side of Allen Road, transported 100 metres by a 208-wheeled trailer, and then put back in the ground by a gantry crane on the east side of the roadway into a similar shaft. Metrolinx, which is in charge of building the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, said the move of each tunnel boring machine went smoothly. Approximately 200 spectators came out Friday night and 400 Saturday night between 2 and 5 a.m. to watch the event, including families with young children and pets. Metrolinx had set up bleachers and provided hot chocolate and coffee to spectators. Each machine has a diameter of 6.5 metres, a length of 10 metres, and a weight of

approximately three GO train locomotives. Ontario’s transportation minister Steven Del Duca called it an exciting weekend, and touted the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project, which is part of a larger, Southern Ontario-wide transportation infrastructure initiative to get the province moving. “It really is an exceptional example of the kind of largescale infrastructure that
Premier (Kathleen) Wynne and our government are so committed to, making sure that we start and complete these projects on time and on budget,” Del Duca said a few days before the boring machines were moved. Now that the machines have been owered into a shaft on the east side of Allen Road, they will begin their eastward tunneling by mid-June, said Metrolinx president and CEO

“After that, the next step is to build all the stations, built the signalization and the track system and the maintenance facility, all towards that date that we’re all looking forward to, which is the first in-revenue service date for our customers,” McCuaig said. When the tunnels have been dug, the four boring

et ready to pick your jaw off the floor. I am a personal injury lawyer who is encouraging you to spend more money on insurance coverage. It may seem strange given that I spend my days fighting against these very companies on behalf of injured plaintiffs. Let me explain why. Most people in Ontario have 1 million in coverage. Sounds like a lot right? It’s not at all. If you are in a car accident with minor injuries that is more than sufficient, however, if you are involved in an accident where you cause someone else major injuries (e.g. brain injury, paraplegic, quadriplegic) then you are on the hook personally for everything over that 1 million. This can have devastating

machines will be removed from the ground during the station construction phase at Yonge Street, so all the disruptive work will done simultaneously in an effort to minimize the impact on the community. Del Duca acknowledged that the work to build the Crosstown LRT is disruptive, but the transit infrastructure is crucial to moving the city. “When you’re going to invest upwards of $5 billion in this kind of public transit infrastructure, there’s really no way around causing some kind of disruption,” he said. He said the multi-billiondollar project is still on time and on budget and he anticipates it will be finished that way as well. The 19-km Eglinton Crosstown LRT will run from Mount Dennis in the west to Kennedy subway station in the east. The line is scheduled to open in 2020.

effects on both an emotional and financial level. You may think you are such a great driver that the Indy 500 is second from knocking down your door. Unfortunately, that doesn’t really matter. If some joe shmo (that is the legal term) hits you and you or your family member is injured badly, and good old joe has 1 million of coverage, you only have 1 million to access. Now, this is where it gets complicated so pay attention, if you have 2 million and he has 1 million, your insurer will kick in the extra million. So basically if your policy has 2 million you are covered for 2 million regardless of the insurance policy of joe shmo. Make sense? The best thing to do is speak with a broker. Make sure you have enough insurance to cover you if you are hit. Think about how much you would need if you could never work again. This is a very real possibility for some of my clients. Then once you have that number, make sure you are covered for that amount. Yes, insurance is already expensive, however saving money could cost you dearly later. Don Mills Toastmasters raise a glass to 60 years Past members invited to attend May 2 celebration DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Don Mills-based Gavel and Glass Toastmasters is observing its 60th anniversary and the club is inviting past members to come out and celebrate with current ones. The club will hold a celebratory dinner Saturday, May 2. “We’re celebrating the history of the club. Former members are part of the history. We would love to hear and learn from them about their experience to enrich our own knowledge of our own club,” said Carol Pratt, who has been a member of the club for the past nine years
and is an area governor for Toastmasters. The Don Mills club is the second oldest in its district (District 60 consists of more than 200 clubs). It also has a lot of longevity in its membership, with some members having been around 15 to 20 years. Despite this longevity, none of the current members are in contact with anyone from the early days, but club members hope to reach past members for the celebration. The club was chartered in May 1955. Toastmasters, founded in California 90 years ago, has more than 300,000 members in 126 countries. Toastmasters helps members become confident speakers and leaders. The Don Mills club began meeting in a restaurant, which is probably how it got its name. The gavel is used
at every Toastmasters meeting, while the glass would be associated with the restaurant setting. Members now meet at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church on Greenland Road, but continue to go out for drinks together. “I think the fact that we meet in the evenings and then we go to a pub afterwards on a Thursday night, that aspect of it has helped forge a lot of friendships, that’s developed a loyalty to the people in the club and to the club itself,” Pratt said. The anniversary dinner will be at the Prague Restaurant, 450 Scarborough Golf Club Rd., May 2 at 6:30 p.m. Dinner starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $35. To RSVP, contact club president Rosti Brankovsky at rostib@rogers.com
