materials for public health providers. In Ontario, Lyme disease is spread through bites from infected blacklegged ticks, also called deer ticks. In May, Toronto Public Health held a press conference in Morningside Park to discuss the city’s growing blacklegged tick population and warn residents to protect from bites. Along with Morningside Park, Rouge Park and Algonquin

Island have been identified as areas where the ticks are most likely to be found in Toronto. Ticks from Rouge Park have tested positive for Lymedisease-causing bacteria. First identified in Toronto in 2013, blacklegged ticks, which can’t fly or jump, migrate by attaching to birds and other animals, so they can be found outside known areas as well. Two swimming events and two Olympic medals, so far, for Toronto east-end teenager Penny Oleksiak at Rio 2016. On Sunday, she earned a silver medal in the 100-metre butterfly, one night after she anchored the Canadian women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team to a bronze medal. The individual silver medal for the 16-year-old east-end Toronto resident, who finished up her Grade 10 year at Monarch Park Collegiate in June, marked Canada’s first individual female Olympic swimming medal since Marianne Limpert at Atlanta 1996 – four years before Oleksiak was born. It also marked the first Olympic medal of any kind for a Canadian woman in the butterfly event. She is also the first Canadian woman to win two Olympic medals since Anne Ottenbrite did in 1984 in Los Angeles. Her time of 56.46 seconds was also a world junior record, breaking her own record that she set in the preliminary round. Ahead of her for the gold medal was Sarah Sjostrom from Sweden who won the event in world record time of 55.48 seconds, smashing her own world record. In third place was defending Olympic champ

Tragically Hip’s Toronto shows spark fundraising events throughout city for Sunnybrook hospital JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com G o rd D ow n i e a n d h i s Tragically Hip bandmates’ musical legacy is secure in Canada. Following Downie’s diagnosis with glioblastoma in May, their legacy will live on at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre as well. As the band traverses Canada on its Man Machine Poem Tour – the band’s last – fans in various cities have set up fundraisers in support of Sunnybrook, where Downie received care. With the Man Machine Poet Tour coming to Toronto this week for three shows on Aug. 10, 12 and 14, Toronto is pitching in for the cause as well. Sunnybrook has set up the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research (https:// donate.sunnybrook.ca/

braincancerresearch), and the Firkin on Harbour (10 Yonge St.) is hosting Courage for Gord Toronto events from noon to 6 p.m. before each Toronto show, with proceeds going toward the fund. The Junction City Music Hall at 2907 Dundas St. W., meanwhile, will screen the Hip’s final show Saturday, Aug. 20 at 8 p.m. While admission is free, the music hall will take donations for the Gord Downie Fund. A portrait of Gord Downie will be on display at the Leslie Jones restaurant, 1182 Queen St. E., until Aug. 20. Fans can bid on the painting, with proceeds going toward the Gord Downie Fund, at http:// gordasgerry2016.eflea.ca Dr. James Perry, head of neurology at Sunnybrook, said that while advances have been made in research to combat glioblastoma, more

funds are always needed in finding treatment options and searching for a cure. “It’s still relatively underrepresented – less than two per cent of all cancers – and that leads to a lot of difficulty in making a strong case for funding,” he said. “Hence the need for philanthropy and special events to bolster the funding that we do have.” He said the Tragically Hip have made it clear they want to funds raised to go toward glioblastoma work and research. “This will be used exclusively to build our brain tumour program,” he said. Sunnybrook already has a significant brain tumour centre, and the funds raised will ideally allow the centre to amalgamate brain tumour resources, bring in top scientists, buy new equipment and more.

The Canadian women's rugby team earned the Olympic bronze medal in Rio. Toronto residents include Central Tech grad Charity Williams (third from left) and Lawrence Park Collegiate grad Ghislaine Landry (second from right).

Toronto pair helps Canada earn bronze in women’s rugby sevens NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com A couple of Toronto residents played a key role in helping Canada earn a bronze medal in women’s rugby sevens at the Rio Olympics Monday. And both say they were introduced to the sport in Grade 9 at their respective Toronto high schools – 28-year-old Ghislaine Landry at Lawrence Park Collegiate and 19-year-old Charity Williams at Central Tech. “As a kid it was my dream, today it’s a medal around my neck. What a feeling!,” tweeted Landry, who again led the Canadian team in scoring with 41 points. Both Landry and Williams quickly graduated to club level – Landry, who grew up in the area of Lawrence Avenue and Avenue Road, with Toronto Scottish, and Williams with Markham Irish – and then on to provincial and national teams. The Canadian team earned the bronze medal with a

33-10 win over Great Britain Monday, avenging an earlier 22-0 loss in a preliminary round game. Canada was relegated to the bronze medal match with a 17-5 loss to eventual gold medalist Australia earlier Monday. Canada won its quarter-final game Sunday 15-5 over France to go along with wins in its two other preliminary round games, 45-0 over Japan and 38-0 over host Brazil. The bronze was not unexpected – Canada had been Top 3 in the world the last couple of years. And Landry leading the Canadian team in scoring over the six games in three days in Rio with 41 points, including a team-leading 18 points in the bronze medal win over Great Britain, was also not a surprise. She has led the world rugby sevens series in scoring over the past three years, and is the series second top scorer of all time. Williams chipped in her

only try (five points) in Rio, scoring the lone Canadian try in the semifinal loss to eventual Olympic champion Australia. It capped two incredible summers for the Canadian team, which won the rugby sevens event at the Pan Am Games in Toronto. Williams in a July interview just prior to leaving for Rio, told Metroland Media it was not a given that she would make the Canadian team at this early stage of her career despite being in the national team program for the last three years. To say she was excited to get the call was an understatement: “To be going to my first Olympics is such an accomplishment for me, especially because I am only 19,” she said. “My one and only dream has come true while leaving me the opportunity to seize it again and again in future games.” - with files from Mike Hayakawa

>>>from page 1 Canadian Olympic Committee website, said she followed the advice of her first coach. “I definitely don’t try to hold back but I think that last 10 metres you just have to put in everything else you have left because once the race is over you’re probably going to regret it if you don’t put everything else in it,” she said. It didn’t immediately sink in she had earned silver. “The first few seconds after I touched the wall I didn’t look back, I was just trying to catch my breath,” she said, in the COC media release. “I wasn’t even sure I medalled until I looked up and I saw the Canadian flags in the air around me. Getting to see that and then getting to see that you medalled is just an amazing feeling.” She immediately looked for her parents and siblings who were all in the stands to watch her remarkable performance. “I saw my dad, he stood up and waved to me. He was literally the only person I saw, everything else was just blurred.” Sports runs in Oleksiak’s family – brother Jamie Oleksiak is an NHL defenceman with the Dallas Stars, Hayley Oleksiak is in rowing at Northeastern University. Hayley attended Malvern Collegiate in the Beach while Jamie, who also suited up for Northeastern for one year before switching over to the Ontario Hockey League for two years, attended Crestwood Prep in North York. Prior to Monarch Park Collegiate, Oleksiak attended Glen Ames Senior Public School after previously attending Kew Beach Junior Public School. On Saturday night, Oleksiak proved to be a world-class closer as Canada

came through to capture the Olympic bronze medal in a historic women’s 4 x 100metre freestyle relay. It marked Canada’s first swimming relay medal since 1988, and first in that event since 1976.

I wasn’t even sure I medalled until I looked up and I saw the Canadian flags in the air around me. – Penny Oleksiak

Veterans Sandrine Mainville of Boucherville, Que., and Chantal Van Landeghem of Winnipeg, delivered a strong opening two legs at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium. That left the job ending the nation’s 40-year Olympic medal drought in the event to Oleksiak and another 16-yearold, Taylor Ruck of Kelowna, B.C. On the final lap, Oleksiak separated from the other bronze hopefuls, setting off a celebration on the pool deck as she touched the wall at three minutes, 32.89 seconds – a Canadian record. Michelle Williams of North York, who swam in the morning qualifying, also earns

Olympic bronze. Oleksiak delivered a 52.72-second anchor leg after swimming her 100-m butterfly semifinal about a hour earlier. “I wasn’t super-nervous because the other girls had all done their job and got us in position,” Oleksiak said, in an interview posted on the Swimming Canada website. “I just did my thing ... I’m only 16 so I don’t get as much lactic acid built up (between races). An hour is a long time for me. When I was in agegroup meets sometimes I only had five minutes. “It (earning the bronze medal) is surreal because no one expected us to win a medal and now everyone is talking about it.” Alison Oleksiak in an interview half a decade ago said the family are longtime beach residents. “My husband has lived in the Beach for over 30 years, my parents and I for 20,” said Alison. “We moved 12 years ago from the east end of the beach closer to the box and pool, so the kids could play shinny and swim.” And she added. “Great place to bring up kids!” - With files from Swim Canada and Canadian Olympic Committee

Torontonians need to take precautions against Lyme disease

Write us

T

icks that carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease are confirmed to be in at least three Toronto locations, which should be a cause for concern but not panic among residents. In the case of protecting ourselves from this disease, an ounce of prevention will go a long way. Part of that includes knowledge about the causes of Lyme disease, its diagnosis and in what places to be especially careful – not just in Ontario but anywhere you might travel. In today’s paper, we’re giving readers that valuable information. Be aware that Toronto Public Health has identified Algonquin Island, Morningside Park and the Rouge Valley as city locations where blacklegged ticks (that carry Lyme disease) have been located. In the case of Rouge Park, ticks have tested positive for the Lyme-disease-causing bacteria. When in these areas, please use Our VieW caution. Our stories today provide some safety tips for you. Take Diagnosing Lyme is a chalresponsibility lenge for the medical community, says Jim Wilson, the president for tick safety of the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation. His organization wants Canada’s testing for the disease changed as they do not consider it to be accurate or able to cover all the different strains of Lyme disease. Wilson also says treatment plans need to be re-examined at the federal level, specifically the decision to treat for Lyme disease and the course of antibiotics used and for how long. Canada is only now working on federal public health framework on dealing with Lyme disease. It’s been a long time coming on the federal level, but fortunately the Province of Ontario has been moving ahead on its own and putting its emphasis on reducing risk. That’s a sound strategy by the province, but it will require a high level of public education and personal responsibility on the part of all residents. “It’s really very much in the hands of the public, because they’re the ones that choose to get exposed, they’re the ones that choose to go see a doctor or not, and choose to ask about it, so we want them as knowledgeable as we can get them,” said Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health in an interview with Metroland Media Toronto.

Ten sure signs the Olympics are in full swing Here are 10 signs the Summer Olympics are in full swing: 1. TV announcers say “repechage” a lot. It flows so easily off their tongues you’re in awe. Hard as you try, you still can’t pronounce it properly after all these Olympics. 2. When heats are being contested in any sport, you scan each lane to see if a local athlete or team qualified. If you come up empty in your search, you quickly switch channels until you find a heat in which you have a rooting interest. The semifinals and finals you tune in regardless of who’s involved, but when it comes to those preliminary heats it seems to take hometown faces and logos to keep you glued to your set. 3. Many of your favourite Olympic events have judges decide who wins or loses. Alas, all too often, you don’t agree with their decision. An athlete winning because he/she crosses

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY the finish line first you can understand. A team winning because they score the most points, you also understand. But after being mesmerized by a gymnastic routine and then having the judge give a much different score than you, you’re baffled. It doesn’t stop you from watching gymnastics, but you can’t help wish there was a system more in line with the non-judged events. 4. The Summer Games are a veritable athlonfest and Rio is no different. Pick an athlon any athlon and you’ll find it here. Each captivates in its own way, but the modern pentathlon is in a league of its own. How can you not love an event that was created back in 1912, still proudly calls itself modern and nobody gets their shorts in a knot over it?

5. Many of the official sponsors differ from Summer Games to Summer Games, but two never change and they’re both back again in Rio. The Official Pickle: traffic congestion and the Official Excuse: lack of government funding. 6. It seems every newspaper headline during the Games has to be a play on words. “So-and-so swimmer makes a huge splash.” “So-and-so gymnast jumps for joy.” 7. The Games always feature a blend of familiar veterans and the introduction to some exciting new stars. For Canada, two of the former who come to mind are 33-year-old soccer sensation Christine Sinclair and men’s doubles tennis standout Daniel Nestor. Sinclair, the most accomplished Canadian soccer player of all-time, leads the women’s team and is in her third Olympics. Nestor is in his sixth. As for the

new Canadian kids on the block? First up is 16-yearold Penny Oleksiak who got a bronze medal Saturday and followed it up with a silver on Sunday. And she still has three events to go. 8. When an athlete or team from home wins a medal, you can’t help but get a tear in your eye. 9. If they get gold, it’s tears plural and you automatically rise for the playing of the national anthem. Even if you’re just watching by yourself at home. 10. The Olympic mascot never fails to be a weirdlooking creature. But darn if you don’t want to give it a hug. Rio’s is named Vinicius. He’s a big hit. So be prepared for a long wait. And no shoving if you’re behind me. I plan to take my sweet time. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist who takes writing very seriously. The topics? special report

On the path to understanding Lyme disease >>>from page 1 work, there was a public consultation in June 2015 and a conference in Ottawa this May. Jim Wilson, president of the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation, was one of the conference chairs. “I hope the end result will be that physicians recognize that Lyme disease is neither easy to diagnose, nor is it easy to treat,” said Wilson of the framework. “I think the evidence that was presented (during the conference), and the evidence that is published in many different research papers, has shown that the testing protocol that we’ve been using (in Canada) over the past decades is not accurate. It will not cover all of the strains of bacteria that we know we have and they’re still discovering more.”

Diagnosing lyme Disease Along with funding for more research, including human tissue study, Wilson hopes the framework will change how Lyme disease is diagnosed and treated. “Tying the diagnosis to the patient having been in a known endemic area is foolhardy in a disease that’s transplanted randomly, so we hope that’s going to change,” he said. “Limiting the treatment to a specific period of time, three-to-four weeks of antibiotics for example, considering the evidence that was presented (at the conference) and the many research papers, that too must change. Doctors must be free to treat the patient based upon the symptoms.” He also hopes diagnosis will stop being tied to people having a “bull’s eye” rash. While Lyme literature notes most people with the disease develop the mark, Wilson said current research and his foundation’s experience indicate many people don’t develop any sort of rash at all. Wilson wants transparency in the framework and people with Lyme disease to have a say in it. “I just want to make sure that the patients and their experts are given the voice they deserve at the table where the policy decisions are made. We want to be engaged in the writing of policy, and not just token representation, and not just as reviewers of something that somebody else has written.” Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David Williams, said the province’s main focus

is helping people reduce the risk of getting Lyme disease. “So we have a public that is more aware, more knowledgeable on ticks, on handling of ticks, on accessing their physician in a timely fashion,” he said. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure ... It’s really very much in the hands of the public, because they’re the ones that choose to get exposed, they’re the ones that choose to go see a doctor or not, and choose to ask about it, so we want them as knowledgeable as we can get them.”

waiting for those experts in various areas to continue to review all those standards in that, and definitions, and assessments, and diagnosis around that, as well as the federal paper.” Once the framework is released, the Ontario government will review it, see what it agrees with and ask questions about points of difference. “And to see then what kind of so-called federal-provincial-territorial conjoint activities can, or should, or would we do,” Williams said. “Or what can we do more in our own respective jurisdictions.”

engaging the public

gatheRing the Data

To help, Ontario launched a public awareness campaign as part of its “Combating Lyme Disease Through Collaborative Action: Ontario’s 10 Step Education and Awareness Plan” that was released in July. Williams has seen “snippets and bits” of the federal framework, but noted it hasn’t been finalized, because some aspects are still being discussed. He hopes it will help provinces and territories better understand how other parts of Canada approach the issue, and how it varies throughout the country where different strains of Lyme-disease-causing bacteria are found.

He wants a better picture of how many Ontarians may have been exposed to infected ticks, because monitoring is done through testing and doctors sometimes use preventative medicine instead of ordering tests. Testing isn’t effective in the very early stages of infection, when medical intervention is thought to be most effective, because tests rely on antibodies that need time to build up. Instead, doctors sometimes prescribe antibiotics to keep a potential infection from setting in. “We would like to document that a bit better, so we can understand the work that our primary care doctors are doing in that regard, so it’s part of our surveillance system,” Williams said. He believes Ontario’s testing method is the best. “We have a standardized one that we use, the same as CDC Atlanta and the other top-leading laboratories, it’s a two-stage one. We’re continually looking at our testing to make sure we’re trying to standardize it with other leading centres, and we feel ours is the gold standard.” He added, “We take (Lyme disease) very seriously, and we’re very concerned about it.” The provincial government will continue its awareness campaign. “We really want to make (the public) aware of what we are doing, that we want to do more of it, and want to do it better.” he said. “And keep raising that bar up on a prevention mode.” Visit www.ontario.ca/lyme for Lyme disease information from the Ontario government, and www.canlyme.com for more on the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation.

“And keep pushing the research agenda on a go-forward basis, so not just sitting and saying, well this is as it is. Let’s keep driving and looking for solid evidence and science that would move all the aspects of it, and so we’re really hoping that (the federal government) might stimulate that and keep that moving ahead,” he added. “I know a lot of people are wanting to look at the actual treatment, concepts around chronic Lyme disease, and we’re

Carole Hardacre demonstrates how she would remove a tick if she found one on her dog Morgan.

KNOW YOUR TICK

KNOW YOUR TICK BITES WHERE: Blacklegged ticks sit on tall grasses and shrubs, with arms outstretched, waiting to grab on to animals or humans. HOW: People can reduce the risk of tick bites by staying in the centre of trails, and wearing DEET-based bug repellents and light-coloured clothing that makes it easier to spot ticks, which can be as small as poppy seeds. Wearing long-sleeve shirts, and

pants tucked into socks, also helps prevent bites. WHAT: Early symptoms of Lyme disease can include headache and fatigue, fever and chills, and muscle and joint pain, as well as a stiff neck and rash. Left untreated, the disease can cause heart and neurological problems. For more information, visit www. toronto.ca/health or call Toronto Public Heath at 416-338-7600.

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com William and Emsie Williams watched from the stands as their 25-year-old daughter, Michelle, helped earn Canada’s first medal of the Rio Olympics. Michelle, who is a member of the North York Aquatic Club (NYAC), captured a team bronze in the women’s 4x100 freestyle relay. And she has her finance, Guillermo Toro, to thank for her parents cheering her on in Brazil. Noting the high cost of travelling to Brazil, Toro secretly set up a GoFundMe page in April, with the goal of raising $7,000 to send his future in-laws to Rio. In three months $5,570 was raised by 34 donors, which was enough to fully cover William and Emsie’s expenses in Rio. Toro, who met Michelle at the NYAC in 2003 and will marry the Olympian in December, noted his fiancee’s family immigrated from South Africa to Toronto in

1997 when Michelle was six and not only had her high training costs to deal with, but also those of her sister, Lydia, a former gymnast on the Canadian national team. “When Michelle qualified for the Olympics I knew that it was time for us to find a way to help them,” Toro said in an email to The Mirror from Rio. William, who said this was the first time he and Emsie were able to attend one of Michelle’s big away meets, is humbled by the support they’ve received. “We are so grateful for the GoFundMe system and for

Michelle’s fiancé, Guillermo Toro, who took the initiative to set up the campaign,” he said in email from Rio, also thanking the donors. “For us having been there at the moment when her relay team got the Olympic bronze medal is priceless.” Michelle was not in the pool for the final race, but had helped qualify Canada in the earlier heats. She returned to Toronto in 2014 to train at the High Performance Centre of Ontario in Scarborough, winning gold at the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games in the 4x100 freestyle relay.

The Aga Khan Museum’s newest exhibition, Syria: A Living History, will open Saturday, Oct. 15. The exhibit at 77 Wynford Dr. will bring together more than 5,000 years of art highlighting the contributions that the diverse cultures within Syria – Mesopotamian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Persian, Ottoman, and Arab – have made to world heritage. The exhibition, which represents collaboration between eight international museums and private collections, will run until Monday, Feb. 27, 2017. “We hope that a better appreciation of Syria’s priceless contributions to the world’s heritage over five millennia will add urgency to the efforts to bring about peace and reconciliation in that country,” Aga Khan Museum director and CEO Henry Kim said in a release. “The sheer variety of these artifacts and their cultural breadth reveal just how multi-

Taking place at 2972 Islington Ave. from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., the festival aims to connect residents to some 15 agencies such as settlement services, youth, legal, and employment, along with local businesses, said Lindsay Van Dekerkhove, Delta Family Resource Centre community event assistant. “It’s really meant to help build community,” she said. “There aren’t a lot of resources available (in the area). We are inviting agencies in North York and our catchment area to promote themselves. We are also inviting local businesses, people who are self-

No security with nuclear weapons, says Hiroshima bomb survivor Celebrate Creativity, Community and Culture!

North York: Revel in the Arts and Relish the Food toronto.ca/culturalhotspot

As long as nuclear weapons exist, there is no guarantee of security. Those words were spoken by North York resident Setsuko Thurlow Saturday at the 71st commemoration of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings at Nathan Phillips Square. The event, held by the Hiroshima/Nagasaki Day Coalition, called for the abolishment of nuclear weapons. Thurlow, a Hiroshima bombing survivor and peace activist, was the keynote speaker. Thurlow was a 13-yearold living in Hiroshima, Japan, when the U.S. military dropped the first of two atomic bombs on Japan on Aug. 6, 1945. While others around her died, the Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue resident only sustained cuts and bruises. The two bombs combined

a social worker and her husband a history professor. For the past five decades, Thurlow has travelled across Canada and the United States as a sought-after speaker, sharing her story of survival. In her Saturday address, Thurlow said the world is “getting more dangerous with over 15,000 nuclear weapons, which are far more destructive than those which were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, while the majority of the world’s people continue to live in denial, blissfully ignorant and complacent of the reality. Survivors...became convinced of our mission to warn the world about the reality of those indiscriminate, inhumane, and cruel nuclear weapons, and their utter unacceptability. Thus, we have been calling for the total abolition of such devices of mass murder. We believe that as long as nuclear weapons exist there is no guarantee of security.”
