Jordan Belchos seizes bronze at Pan Ams North York clinic with

Olympic ice dancers a thrill for young skaters

Third place in roller sports speed skating

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir give on-ice tips at Downsview Park

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Jordan Belchos recognized a “now-or-never moment” Monday, and it got him Canada’s only roller sports speed skating medal of the 2015 Pan Am Games. It was that, and his ability to bear down and keep skating after he broke away from the pack in the latter half of a punishing 10,000-metre points race. Born in Scarborough and raised in North York, Belchos, 26, was being outskated by other competitors during the first half. They kept “dumping” him – overtaking him on the straightaway of a track newly refurbished for the Games at Saint John Paul II Catholic Secondary School – as Belchos tried again and again to finish laps in a position to score points. ‘Man, these guys are better than I thought,’” he recalled thinking. But Belchos also realized the pack was slowing down. Then, Mike Paez of Mexico broke into the lead. “I saw him go, and I saw them not chase him,” said Belchos, who saw this was his chance: “It’s now or never. I’ve got to do it now.” Paez reached the line and

Jordan Belchos races in the Pan Am Games roller sports speed skating 10,000 m points final on Friday at St. John Paul II Catholic Secondary School track. Belchos, who was raised in North York, went on to place third and take the bronze medal.

As Canadian fans cheered, he kept following the leader Paez and moving up the standings until the final lap, where Belchos also finished in second position. Those last two points for

the Canadian in the race’s 25th lap weren’t enough to take silver away from Colombia’s Juan Sebastian Sanz Neira, but they won Belchos the bronze. A medal was all the sweeter coming a few kilometres from where he was born. Belchos grew up in North York, where his family moved when he was two. They later moved to Thornhill, and

Belchos now studies at the University of Alberta in Calgary. “This is big for roller sports in Canada,” said his father, Mike Belchos, adding his son started as an inline skater at age eight or nine before being recruited by Own the Podium to skate on ice. It is first time Canadians have won a roller sports speed skating medal, he said.

North York police warn Russian grandparents of fraud North York’s 32 Division is warning residents of a “grandparent scam” targeting seniors of the Russian community. Police said the scam involves a grandparent receiving a phone call from a person claiming to know or

be their child or grandchild. The caller states they are in some kind of trouble, usually an accident, and needs immediate cash. The grandparent is then spoken to by someone claiming to be a lawyer, who instructs the grandparent to

count all available cash within their home. The grandparent is then told a man would be stopping by their house to collect the cash. Police are requesting the public’s assistance to share this information with anyone they know who may

be a grandparent. Police are urging anyone who has been a victim of this fraud to contact police.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416808-3200 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.

For 60 young local figure skaters, getting to learn from Olympic ice dancing champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir at the Scotiabank Pond at Downsview Park was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The registered participants were selected through an application process as part of the cross-Canada series of Master Class skating clinics presented by Lindt. “I was really, really excited,” said Mackenzie Gauthier, 15, who is a member of the East York Skating Club and came to the session with her mother Samantha. Emily Schick shared in her excitement recalling when she found out she would have the chance to skate with Virtue and Moir on Thursday, July 9. “I was speechless,” said Emily, 13, of the Innisfil Skating Club, who attended the session with her mother, Retta. It didn’t take long to warm up to the ice dancing champions who have been skating together since 1997 and have garnered attention for their many accomplishments including gold and silver medals in the Olympic Games as well as being sixtime Canadian National Champions. “They’re really nice and they’re funny, too,” Emily said. For Virtue and Moir, the experience of getting to teach the next generation of skaters

in six cities was like coming full circle. “It is kind of a cyclical moment,” said Virtue, who remembers being inspired by her own on-ice Canadian heroes Victor Kraatz and Shae-Lynn Bourne. Having already held skating clinics at Richmond, BC, and London, ON, before arriving in Toronto, Moir said he was impressed at what he’s seen on the ice so far. “There’s so many great skating schools and so many talented kids,” he said. They both noted all the support they’ve received growing up was key to their own success and to be able to give back in some way now is a special moment for them. “We’re really blessed to have the opportunity that we have,” Moir said. Virtue agreed, adding she especially enjoys the question and answer period they have with the young skaters off the ice after their session. “We can interact with people one-on-one,” she said. “It’s so special.” And the kids had plenty of questions for them, including what their practice routines were, why they started to skate, and how they kept in touch with family and friends while they were away training and competing. Before the session ended, they offered some advice on how to remain driven for success. “It’s all about loving what you do,” Moir said.

hen a gun falls into the hands of a child or a teen, the blame for it cannot be placed on one person. It’s a community’s collective failure to provide opportunities, outreach and ongoing dialogue for these youth that allows gun culture to take root around them. For there to be a meaningful change, it has to be more than just the police coming to the door and patrolling the streets. There needs to be change fostered from within these neighbourhoods, but it has to happen in tangent with support from those on the who may have the means our view outside to help keep up the momentum. The Jamestown community in Collectively north Etobicoke is mourning the loss of 14-year-old Lecent Ross, we can do who died from a gunshot wound in a friend’s home last week. Though something police continue to investigate and have not laid charges, nor said who fired the gun, they did say the weapon was an illegal, semi-automatic handgun – a .40-calibre Smith & Wesson. Lecent was the third resident on this particular street to be killed by a gun in the past two years. Pastor Allan Bowen, of Abundant Life Assembly in north Etobicoke, told Metroland Media Toronto his community needs saving from drugs, guns and gangs. He says they need a champion to come forward to change the community’s fate. And while the police have their obvious role in eradicating crime from these areas, there are other players that need to come to the table. We, the media, need to keep the spotlight on these issues and these communities. It defeats the purpose of serving the broader, public good when we swoop in on tragedy and fly out at the first sniff of the next breaking news story. Politicians can help push for change within government. They can secure funding for community investment and investment in at-risk youth. But their actions rely significantly on the will of the people. And it’s people who live outside of these neighbourhoods who need to start caring. There are world issues that get more support than the problems happening in our own backyard. This is our city’s problem and these people need our support.

column

The Pan Am Games are picking up steam I have to admit I never paid much attention to the Pan Am Games before, including the two times they were in Winnipeg, in 1999 and 1967. In fact, I wasn’t even aware of the Pan An Games in 1967, let alone that they were going to be staged in Canada. Back then, amateur sports in this country didn’t have the visibility they do now. Compounding matters was that the big push during our centennial year was for the world’s fair, Expo 67, held in Montreal. Expo 67 was a great experience. We went there on a family vacation and I still have souvenirs from it tucked away. But given that I played just about every sport imaginable when I was growing up and was obsessed with sports 24/7 – my parents always claimed it was a lot closer to 28/7 – if amateur sports had the same profile back then as they do today, I likely would have lobbied my folks for

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY a trip to catch the Pan Am Games instead of Expo 67 considering Winnipeg, like Montreal, was just a hop, skip and flight away. Flash forward to the present. Well, the Pan An Games have got my attention. Not my undivided attention, mind you. There’s no such thing anymore it seems, particularly in a city of this size. There are always a lot of great festivals and activities going on in Toronto at this time of year and the list keeps expanding. Throw in trying to keep up with the exploits of the Blue Jays, TFC and the Argos and all of the offseason moves of the Leafs and Raptors. Well, we’ve got our summer hands full around here. But, the Pan Am Games have the majority of my attention. I still don’t know what

they’re all about exactly, but I’m learning quickly. In the meantime, I’m enjoying the benefits of having such a spectacle just around the corner. There are numerous by-products of being part of a host city. Topping that list are a generous amount of free festivities complementing the paid ones, so the huge number of people who don’t have the wherewithal to put the word “only” in front of $20 when talking about ticket prices can feel as much a part of the excitement as those who can afford to be in the stands. There is much speculation that these Pan Am Games are a dress rehearsal for an Olympic bid for 2024. But I don’t think any of us are in need of a run-through. I sure don’t need any help. I know the Olympic spectator script by heart. I’ve been following it on cue since Friday night. I was glued to the TV for the opening ceremonies. I’m checking the updates

regularly to see how the Canadian athletes are doing and keeping a close eye on where Canada sits in the overall medal standings. At night I’m watching the highlights of all our medalists. Over and over and over. And I’m getting chills seeing our smiling athletes waving to the adoring crowd. With the Games in town, I also get the added bonus of being able to catch a couple of live events and take in a few freebies. Yeah, though we’re just a week in, I’m already in fine Olympic spectator spirit form. But I’ve still got work to do. I’m determined by the time the closing ceremonies arrive, I’ll finally have Pan Am spectator spirit down pat, too. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Toronto Japanese Film Festival wraps up ‘best year yet’

DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Toronto Japanese Film Festival organizer James Heron couldn’t be happier with how the event went this year, attracting record audiences and A-list directors, showcasing highly regarded films, and setting up the fledgling festival for another great year. The fourth annual festival, put on by the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC), concluded June 26 at the organization’s North York location. The two-week festival attracted more than 7,000 visitors to see 20 films at 25 screenings (some films had a second screening). The festival also featured the world-premier of Kakekomi, a samurai film by director Masato Harada. Harada was at the festival to introduce the film on opening night. “It was our best year yet, without question,” said Heron, JCCC executive

director. “The exit surveys were incredibly positive, so people enjoyed the films, and people were really complimentary about the programing.” The festival didn’t concentrate on any one genre of film, but captured the best of it all, he said. Harada wasn’t the only

big-name guest at the festival. Closing night featured an a A-list couple of Japanese film in director Masayuki Suo and his actor wife Tamiyo Kusakari, who introduced their film Lady Maiko at its North American premiere. The film was sold out, but will have a second screening this summer.

In both instances, Heron said, the directors were pleased with their experiences, which helps the festival build a reputation that will help attract more A-listers in future years. “They were very complimentary. They said there isn’t anything else like this out there, on this scale,” Heron said. He said the directors who come out are pleased by the audiences who turn up for the films, as there are people from backgrounds other than just Japanese. “The directors are saying, ‘We really understand the multicultural nature of Toronto and we’re seeing it in the audience. We feel that our films are being seen

by Canadians, and also by people with backgrounds as diverse as India and Middle East, and Europe and Africa.’ It really is an international film festival.” Heron said the festival took a big step forward this year and organizers will continue to build on that and the festival’s strengths. Heron anticipates future festivals will attract more top talent from Japan, more quality films, more screenings, and larger audiences. For those who missed the festival, the JCCC puts on a monthly screening of Japanese film. Kazuyoshi Kumakiri’s My Man was selected the winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Best Film at the festival. Kakekomi came second. Shinobu Yaguchi’s Wood Job! received the festival’s Kobayashi Audience Choice Award.

Story about The Hammer Band in North York Mirror inspires donation >>>from page 1 the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) after making several presentations on what the organization does. The Hammer Band, which was started by renowned violinist Moshe Hammer almost a decade ago, currently offers free violin lessons in 26 schools reaching more than 500 students from Grade 4 through middle school. “I hope somebody will play it,” said Gray, admitting her husband, who received the

violin as a gift from his cousin, never really picked it up. “My husband wanted to learn.” But she’s happy for the opportunity to give it to a worthy cause. Hammer picked up the violin from Gray recently and appreciated the kind gesture. “It was wonderful,” said Hammer, noting continued support for the program, like the ones he’s received from Gray and the York Mills Collegiate students, has

offers pan am games car-pooling wUber Uber has launched a new carpooling service in Toronto to take advantage of projected congestion levels during the Pan Am Games. From now until July 26 UberPool allows users of its contentious UberX ride-share service to split fare costs with a fellow customer headed in the same direction. The service has been around since 2014 in five cities including San Francisco and Paris, and Uber claims it has led to “thousands” of users making use of it more than five times a week. Uber is also promising the carpooling option will make use of the temporary HOV lanes installed for the Games on major roadways. That will not be music to the ears of Toronto taxi drivers who’ve opposed Uber’s operations from the start. PETITION COLLECTS NAMES FOR BIKE LANES With Toronto council

w

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT endorsing the expansion of bike lanes on Adelaide and Richmond streets, attention from the city’s cycling community has shifted to Bloor Street. The street has long been an aspiration for cycling activists looking for a major east-west lane network, but adding lanes has faced opposition from some storefront business owners who fear a loss of street parking will negatively affect bottom-lines. But that hasn’t stopped nearly 860 people from signing a CycleTO petition calling for a pilot lane on Bloor by 2016, and for the street to be included within the city’s 10-year framework for cycling. View the petition via CycleTO’s website www.cycleto.ca WIND USERS GET CELL ACCESS wSUBWAY

WIND mobile users will now be able to use their phones at every TTC station

on the U subway Loop. The company became the first-and so far onlymobile provider to sign up to provide cellular access in the subway system. Now with this week’s announcement, cellphone reception will be available within 18 downtown stations, though not on the trains themselves. ikea offers eLECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING IKEA will install Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations at its Canadian stores including its two Toronto locations. The move is expected to take place by the end of August and two stations will be available per store, the company announced last week in a statement. EV use is slowly growing in Canada with top brands including the Chevrolet Volt, Nissan Leaf and the stylish Tesla Model S. Around 10,650 cars were sold from 2011-2014.

Press conference just part of story

Don Mills (895 Lawrence Ave E)

Scarborough (520 Ellesmere Rd.)

REBEL READER Is your child a Rebel Reader?

An epiphany came upon the city hall press gallery Tuesday, after Scarborough Agincourt Councillor Jim Karygiannis finished a morning news conference offering a scaremongering interpretation of the Highway Traffic Act. It was not that Karygiannis was being irresponsible when he warned Torontonians and visitors they could be fined up to $20,000 for booking an Uber ride. He was being irresponsible, of course, selectively reading sub-clauses from the Act to conflate the responsibility of a customer with that of a driver and dispatcher. It was straightforward work for journalists at the event to dismantle that fallacy. Had Karygiannis consulted a lawyer in coming to this position? He had not. Had he spoken with the police about the likelihood of such charges being laid against passengers booking a ride with the Uber app? He had written them but not heard back. Had he heard of anyone in any jurisdiction being charged for calling an

david nickle the city Uber cab? No. The epiphany didn’t have much to do with Karygiannis. It had to do with us. The fact is that while the councillor and former Liberal MP was twisting facts, cameras were rolling and his words were going out live on CP24 across the Greater Toronto Area. And before anyone got a chance to ask any questions – including CP24’s own journalists – Karygiannis had the floor. And that is the epiphany: the institutionalization of liveTV coverage of press events has made it easier than ever for demagoguery to take hold. The Ford brothers used live television news conferences to great effect, shouting down reporters who challenged assertions that were flat-out and self-evidently wrong. Former councillor Doug Ford was a master at this live-

TV obfustication, often picking out a particular journalist by name, and insisting their questions were inspired by personal animosity to his poor brother Rob Ford, the mayor. One wonders how much of Ford Nation is comprised of people waiting to get the keys to their car from the muffler shop, watching half or twothirds of these oh-so-distorted spectacles? Karygiannis’ bit of mischief will likely have a similar but smaller effect, driving uninformed visitors and inattentive Torontonians from Uber cars to the waiting arms of Toronto’s licensed taxi drivers, a group that has enjoyed the unwavering support of Karygiannis. Others, who partake of the good, balanced work broadcast journalists do, won’t be so easily fooled. But that’s just damage control. The medium has already delivered its message.

Contractor charged after elderly Italian homeowners scammed A contractor who focused on the elderly Italian community has been charged with construction fraud. According to a release issued by North York’s 31 Division, a 77-yearold woman paid a man $25,000 for renovation work to her home between June 2012 and May 2015. Police allege the renovations never happened. Po l i c e a l l e g e t h e accused offers paving or renovation services to elderly Italian residents, requesting a deposit or large sum up front for his services. He then continues to demand money for materials, but work is never done and materials are

not purchased. Matteo De-Paola, 66, of Toronto, was arrested June 23 and charged with fraud over $5,000. Police said De-Paola has operated under business names Paveland Paving Inc., M. Erwin Mendoza at 416-808-3189 or Det. Const. Jennifer Rae at 416-808-3107, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.
