The total number of human trafficking convictions in Toronto since 2014 now stands at nine; in the first week of July alone, Toronto police arrested seven men within a four-day span on human trafficking charges, one case involving a victim as young as 14. More than 1,000 attend official Canadian launch party at the base of the CN Tower KELsEY ChEnG kcheng@insidetoronto.com Marina De La Peña remembers playing and watching Pokemon when she was little. Now at the age of 20, she never thought she’d be meeting more than a thousand people who shared a collective memory of Pokemon – at the same time. “I grew up with Pokémon – I’ve watched all of the anime and played most of the games,” said De La Peña, who gathered at the base of the CN Tower Monday night with her brother Rodrigo and many other Pokemon Go players to celebrate the official release of the game in Canada. “I am so happy about this launch because I get to meet people who love what I love. It’s brilliant.” The launch of the game was particularly special to De La Peña, who was inspired by

Pokémon to study animation at Toronto’s Max the Mutt college in Toronto. She said the augmented reality aspect is what draws her to the new game. “Pokemon has always been about travelling,” she said. “Now you get to explore the city while playing the game and you get to meet new friends along the way. It’s a really positive experience.” The highlight of the evening was when a life-sized Pikachu mascot showed up, attracting hundreds of fans. Tanisha >>>PLAYERS, page 11

Six-year-old golfer off to kids world championships in U.S. Summit Heights Public School student who lives in North York is ranked sixth in Canada fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com

Canadian Junior Golf Association photo

Zach Lederer is heading to the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships in August.

Most two-year-olds can be found discovering Play-Doh, playing dress-up, or creating masterpieces with crayons. North York’s Zach Lederer was practising his golf swing. Gravitating towards a set of plastic clubs meant for an older sibling, the toddler would emulate the slow swing of the professional golfers on the television. By age three, Zach was teeing off on the golf course. Now, at age six, the Bathurst Street and Wilson Avenue area resident is heading to the US Kids Golf World Championships after qualifying as the Canadian Junior Golf Association’s (CJGA) sixyear-old representative. Set for Thursday, Aug. 4 to Saturday, Aug. 6 at Pinehurst, North Carolina, the event for junior kids aged six to 12

will feature more than 1,500 participants from over 50 countries. A full-length documentary, The Short Game, was filmed during the 2012 world championships and executive produced by Justin Timberlake and his wife, Jessica Biel. Zach, who currently plays and competes in the CJGA in U9 division tournaments and is ranked sixth in Canada - and is the top-ranked six-year-old - admits he’s feeling a little nervous about the big competition, but is looking forward to making new friends. The Summit Heights Public School student, who is heading into Grade 2, found out three weeks ago he was eligible for the world championships. His dad, Ian Lederer, who acts as his swing coach and caddy, said he doesn’t push his son to play. “He’s into it,” he said. “He wants to do it. Nine times out of 10 when I come home from

work, he asks if we could go to the course.” That course would be located at The Country Club in Woodbridge, where Zach practices three to four times a week during the summer, and at the Metro Golf Dome in Scarborough after school.

Nine times out of 10 when I come home from work, he asks if we could go to the course. – Ian Lederer, Zach’s dad and coach

The best part of the sport for Zach is “winning medals, chipping, putting from far away because it’s fun,” said the soft-spoken youngster, admitting he does have an area that needs work - his turn.

“Sometimes I only turn half way and my dad says to turn all the way,” he said. His best score of 34 happened just two weeks ago, with four pars, four birdies, and one double bogey on the nine-hole modified golf course. Zach’s mom, Courtney Lederer, said although her son can be quiet and reserved off the golf course, he’s an entirely different boy when it’s game time. “He has confidence,” she said. “There’s a different walk. He struts. He’s in his element.” Zach, who admires American PGA golfer Jordan Spieth, said his dream is to land a hole in one. In fact, Zach and his dad have a bet - whoever lands a hole in one first gets to pick where dinner is. And where would Zach choose? “Burger King,” he said.

Some colour will brighten up grey retaining wall on Don Mills Road fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com A grey retaining wall on Don Mills Road is getting a splash of colour in the form of a mural. The Connections Legacy Mural, spread out over 760 feet just south of Sheppard Avenue, uses 500 different shades of colour and applied fabric textiles representing a smorgasbord of different cultures. The project is part of the city’s third annual Cultural HotSpot program, which focuses on North York this year. Running May to October, the goal is highlighting arts,

culture, and community in the area bounded by Finch Avenue, Hwy. 404, Lawrence Avenue, and Jane Street. Work on the mural, spearheaded by not-for-profit arts service organization Mural Routes, began in early July and will be unveiled in August. “This wall is seen by thousands of people daily, from all over the world, as the wall is nestled by one of Toronto’s busiest intersections and public transit terminals,” lead artist Rob Matejka said in a release. “The fragmented tiles of colour symbolize diversity in complimentary harmony, while the colour gradients

mirror the movement of transit as well as residents moving in and out of the community. The multi-cultural diversity

of the local communities and Toronto as a whole will be further represented by pieces of multi-cultural textile and

tile patterns woven into the gradient.” Karin Eaton, executive and artistic director of Mural Routes, said the easterly North York neighbourhood is made up of a mosaic of cultures that isn’t defined by one particular group. “It’s a diverse community,” she said. “There are so many different cultures, so many different people.” As for the mural’s location, Eaton said it’s a well travelled route that is sure to garner a lot of attention. The mural project began when participants of Mural Routes’ Introduction to Mural Art program gathered over six weeks at Fairview

library branch to discuss ideas. Mural designs created during this program were on display at Parkway Forest Community Centre for a week in June, alongside Matejka’s proposed design. The community was invited to give feedback on the design during this time, with Matejka settling on a concept encompassing different cultures. I’m really happy with it, I think it’s lovely,” Eaton said. Mural Routes has been part of some 50 murals throughout the city, including on Sheppard Avenue, just west of Leslie Street.

Laws to stop texting and walking would fall on deaf ears

Write us

I

n hastily snatched hindsight, it’s fair to say that last week probably wasn’t the best time for Toronto Council to vote to ban texting while walking. The same time as councillors supported a motion by York South-Weston Councillor Frances Nunziata to ask the province to change the Highway Traffic Act making it illegal to text and otherwise distract yourself while walking, Torontonians were downloading the walking, distracted gaming app Pokemon Go to their smartphones. The provincial government, no doubt sensing trouble, made it clear that Toronto can make an antitexting bylaw if it likes, but really, should Toronto enact such a bylaw, compliance will be, to put it mildly, an issue. It’s not to say that pedestrians shouldn’t take some responsibilOur VieW ity for their own safety, or that streets aren’t safer when Council fails by Toronto everybody has their eyes on the not speeding road. But really: it doesn’t take a up plan trending gaming app to tempt reasonable adults to check their smartphone for texts, emails or just to make a change to the music they’re listening to, as they move around the city. And frankly, pedestrians aren’t the ones who are responsible for the genuinely deadly players on Toronto streets; the multi-ton motor vehicles that almost inevitably come out on top when collisions occur are. Nunziata’s motion came as Toronto Council was considering a broader, $80-million plan to make Toronto’s roadways safer. To councillors’ credit, they unanimously supported that plan, and bolstered it beyond its original scope. So over the next five years, speed limits will be reduced on key roadways in the downtown and beyond, more signalized crossings will be installed and slow-speed zones around schools will be implemented. All good – although it’s a shame that councillors didn’t support an amendment from another councillor, Kristyn Wong-Tam, to accelerate the so-called Vision from five years to two. That failure, and the scolding fingerwag of the amendment by Nunziata that council finally did support, inspires little confidence. While they were at it, they might have approved another bylaw – preventing dyspeptic amendments being passed late on the third day of summer council meetings, when legislators are clearly too tired to think straight.

Council leaves behind subways, spending for summer reprieve A quiet has descended on Toronto City Hall in the wake of last week’s marathon July council meeting. It seems almost peaceful. Councillors won’t be getting together again to disrupt that peace until September rolls around – and it would be nice to think that when they and Mayor John Tory meet once more, it will remain in a spirit of peace, and reconciliation. The debate over the Scarborough subway, after all, appears to be over. Whatever one thinks of the one-stop subway extension to the Scarborough Town Centre (coming in now at $3.4 billion and probably a good deal more), council decided on its second day of meeting that it was fine with the plan, and the expense. The fight, between critics like Josh Matlow and Gord Perks and boosters like Deputy Mayor Glenn De Baeremaeker and Tory himself, had been seismic until then.

david nickle the city When the vote finally came late in the day July 12, it wasn’t even all that close: just 16 councillors voted in favour of an amendment to scrap the subway plan and build light rail there instead, with 27 siding with Tory. It might have been closer, but Tory’s team made a point of rewarding its allies. In addition to the Scarborough subway’s continued approval, council also approved studies for no less than three additional transit projects not on any list but the ones on certain local councillors’ election literature. So in the coming months, we’ll hear about a westward extension of the Bloor-Danforth Line 2, from Kipling Station to Sherway Gardens (courtesy of Etobicoke Lakehsore Councillor Justin Di Ciano); a subway

connection between the Yonge-Sheppard interchange and Downsview Station (a long-held dream of York Centre Councillor James Pasternak); and a Sheppard subway extension from Don Mills Station to McCowan Road (championed by Scarborough Agincourt Councillor Jim Karygiannis). The studies aren’t, of course, anything approaching a commitment, but they are the sort of thing that has a limited but real effect of papering over possible divisions – both on council and inter-regionally. The Scarborough subway, now that it’s going ahead, is going to eat up a huge amount of money and resources. As we must remind ourselves, it is the only major transit project in the city’s long-term transit plan that is fully funded, and the only other one that’s even partially funded is also in Scarborough: the Eglinton Crosstown line that will actually service Scarborough neighbour-

hoods. The downtown relief line, which transit planners have noted is essential to stave off unacceptable levels of crowding on the Yonge line, is not funded, nor is light rail servicing the city’s waterfront. And as was revealed this week, it will likely be more difficult than not to wrestle more money from the provincial government. Ontario’s Financial Accountability Office noted in a report released Tuesday that the province is in danger of over-extending itself on transit spending as matters stand, with an extra $50 billion in provincial debt in 2021 due to transit alone. So fulfilling those dreams – of subways, eventually, everywhere – will be a long shot. In the short run of these summer months, as pleasant and peaceable as these dreams are, dreams are all they are. Toronto Public Library helps out Pokemon Go enthusiasts If you’re looking for some easily accessible PokeStops, the Toronto Public Library (TPL) has got you covered. It’s not just a place to pick out a good book, or surf the web, library branches

are also a place to battle other Pokemon Go trainers and even catch a couple of Pokemon on book shelves and tables. TPL is the latest organi-

zation to get swept up in the whirlwind that has the world obsessed with trying to ‘catch ’em all.’ To help trainers be the best they can be, the library has created and posted a list of branches that are either a PokeStop, a PokeStop with Pokemon around or a gym. While Pokemon Go is all the rage these days, there’s at least one location in Toronto where the game could be causing more trouble than

fun. The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) has asked players of the popular app to refrain from dropping lures in or around the hospital. “We appreciate the positive intentions of Pokemon Go players who want to drop lures at SickKids,” read a statement released by the hospital.

“Unfortunately Pokemon Go can create many challenging issues and safety concerns for our patients and may impede staff in their work. “Our patients are some of the sickest in Ontario and may be going through a very difficult time in their lives. We ask that individuals respect their privacy and the hospital space.”

Kids enjoy Holland Bloorview Spiral Garden summer program fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Zach Rayment bangs his hands on the drum, keeping rhythm with the melodic chanting and guitar strumming. Moments later, after telling a reporter “singing is kind of my thing”, he belts out a rendition of Keep on the Sunny Side, which he previously performed in front of several hundred people during his graduation ceremony from Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital’s school program. The seven-year-old is taking part in Holland Bloorview’s Spiral Garden summer art, garden and play program, which is fully integrated for kids with and without disabilities situated on 1.5 acres at Bayview and Eglinton. Zach, who was born with a severe form of cerebral palsy called spastic quadriplegia and uses a walker or wheelchair to get around, has participated in activities set in the Spiral Garden, but this marks the first time he’s taking part in the summer program. “I like being outside and

doing all kinds of activities,” Zach said while taking a break from the fun Monday. “My favourite activities in school are at the Spiral Garden.” The summer program is divided into two-week sessions throughout July and August, and can accommodate 60 kids – 30 with disabilities and 30 without. Children are free to choose from a variety of activities run by professionals at their leisure, including crafts, puppetry, mask making, woodworking, ceramics and gardening. Three music circles are held daily, but kids are free to stay as long or as little at each activity. Typical age range is six to 12, while some participants are up to age 18. “Here, they are just kids,” said Shannon Crossman,

creative/program co-ordinator for the Spiral Garden program. Some children with disabilities are joined by their able-bodied siblings, she said, while some attend with a support staff member. “They all have different needs and ways to participate,” she said. “The ability to set their own curriculum is big for them.” Musician Lynn Simmons, who has been part of the program for 25 years, said it eliminates any thoughts around what ability is. “When it comes down to it, we all need help,” she said. Zach’s mom, Barb, loves the fact he can participate in the program with his able-bodied six-year-old sister, Kate. “Sometimes Zach is secluded,” she said of her son, who is a triplet. His two identical twin brothers are able-bodied and are busy with soccer this summer. And when he’s not singing or creating woodwork, the bespectacled youngster who loves Star Wars and video games can be found swimming, taking a ride on a swing, or enjoying the thrills of Canada’s Wonderland.

At left, Zach Rayment plays the drum and sings with his sister Kate and Lynn Simmons at the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital’s Spiral Garden Monday; while at far left, Zach and Kate tunnel into a mound of clay. Dan Pearce/MetrolanD

Good hearing but trouble with conversation? This improvement in hearing can be achieved for some clients through the new Phonak Audéo V’s hearing aids. This cutting-edge hearing technology comes in a miniature casing that can significantly enhance the user’s ability to hear speech in company. The hearing aids attune to the person you are speaking to and can also recognize if ambient noise increases in the background.

A lot of people have trouble catching what people say, especially in group situations, despite having good hearing. What a lot of people don’t know is that this may be caused by damage to the so-called motor or amplifier function of special cells in the ear. A new type of hearing aid can help balance this out. A great many people have difficulty hearing others clearly on a daily basis. Bad acoustics, unclear pronunciation, background noise and music often make it challenging to catch what people say. This results in them having to repeatedly ask questions, straining to hear and perhaps increasingly avoiding discussions in large groups. As mentioned earlier, this may be caused by malfunctions in special cells in the ear. According to a theory proposed by hearing researchers, “motor cells” are a type of hair cell responsible for amplifying quiet sounds. They vibrate up to 20,000 times per second. If these hair cells do not work properly then quiet sounds are no longer naturally

Hair cells in the ear move very rapidly and can act as an amplifier or dampener. If these cells are damaged, they can no longer properly amplify speech and dampen loud noises. amplified in the ear and loud sounds no longer dampened. This leads to more difficulty in hearing what is said in a lot of situations. If the hair cells have been damaged by noise or blood circulation problems, hearing aids that amplify quiet speech and dampen loud ambient noise can be a good solution for most people.

Connect Hearing is currently looking to improve hearing for people who experience these challenges and want to try this new technology. We are particularly interested in candidates who have trouble hearing speech in the situations discussed above and can benefit from a trial to see whether they notice an improvement. Interested people can register for a free hearing evaluation and a no-obligation trial of the Audéo V hearing aids by calling 1.888.408.7377.

special report

Human trafficking issue is ‘a provincial, national crisis’ >>>from page 1 police officer, as long as the accused is found guilty for what he’s done and justice is served, “I’m happy with that.” The provincial government unveiled the long-awaited human trafficking strategy Thursday, June 30, which calls for an investment up to $72 million aimed at increasing awareness and coordination, enhancing justice-sector initiatives and improving survivors’ access to services. Currently, Ontario is grappling with roughly 65 per cent of police-reported human trafficking cases in Canada. The strategy involves nine ministries and is based on four pillars: strong leadership through an anti-human trafficking office through CommSoc, which will collect and share information; increased awareness and community supports to help survivors heal; justice sector initiatives to identify trafficking earlier and hold traffickers to account; and indigenous-led approaches. Det. Sgt. Nunzio Tramontozzi of Toronto Police Service’s human trafficking team called the strategy a great start, noting specialized Crowns are a police asset. If Crowns don’t understand “trauma bonds” between the victim and pimp, it’s hard for them to wrap their mind around why a girl would protect a guy who brutalized her for years, he said, adding instead of forging ahead and putting the victim on the stand, they tend to take pleas for lesser offences. “As of last summer we only had

one (human trafficking) conviction in Toronto,” he said. “One guy. It’s pretty sad.” Ontario’s Attorney General Yasir Naqvi, who was on hand for the strategy’s release, called human trafficking an increasing, complex problem. A specialized team of Crown attorneys will ensure cases are prosecuted effectively and consistently across province, he said, adding expanded quick response programs will be in place to help victims, including paying for things such as travel costs, identification replacement, and enhancing 24-hour crisis assistance. But not everyone was pleased with the strategy. Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock MPP Laurie Scott, who put forward a private member’s bill Saving the Girl Next Door, which calls for victims to obtain restraining orders against their trafficker and sue them for damages, said while the strategy is a step in the right direction, it ultimately falls short. The Conservative MPP took issue with the lack of permanent multiyear funding and firm deadlines for establishing a multi-jurisdictional and multi-disciplinary task force. In an interview with Metroland Media Toronto prior to the strategy’s release, she said the province needs to take the lead in human trafficking enforcement. “It’s modern day slavery,” she said. “Will all survivors sue? No, but it’s a means of justice.” Scott’s bill would also include traf-

ficking as a sexual offence under the age of 18. Michelle Smith, executive director of Women’s Support Network of York Region in Newmarket, which runs a human trafficking help line, called the issue a “provincial and national crisis.” She hoped the strategy would include long-term core funding, along with people specialized in human trafficking and infrastructure for couselling. Trafficked women sometimes require “eight, nine, 10-hour care”, with psychological and emotional trauma the most pervasive aspect. “We have women that are servicing eight to 10 men a day, against their will,” she said. Funded by Canada’s Department of Justice, York Region launched a bus campaign several weeks ago aimed at trafficked women, Smith said, suggesting a go-to guide and app needs to be available for school boards to inform teachers about human trafficking signs to look out for. Besides a strategy, greater emphasis on social media literacy must be taught in schools to help combat human trafficking, said Debbie Gordon, director of kidsmediacentre at Centennial College. Being able to share case studies about other young victims works, but voices of young people who question the sensibilities of the social media culture need to be heard, she said. “Kids will listen when it’s one of their own.”

Players compete against each other at the ‘Battle for the CN Tower’

Pokemon Go helping take augmented reality to the next level

>>>from page 1

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

Grewal was one of the ones to get a picture with the mascot. “I’ve always been a huge Pokemon fan since I was two years old – I’ve watched all the anime series and played all the games,” she said. “I am so excited to see Pikachu here – it’s like my childhood dream came true.” Matthew Cashman, 30, the organizer of the “meet-up” and co-founder of Legacy Gamers, a Toronto-based gaming events organization, created the event “on a whim,” and said he was surprised at the turnout. He thought it was a great way to celebrate an important game in many people’s childhood. “I used to play Pokemon back in the day when it first came out, on my Game Boy black-and-white screen,” he said. “As a kid, I was pretty passionate about it.” Developed by American software company Niantic, Inc., Pokemon Go operates very much like a fantasy Google Map. The game is set in augmented reality, where players physically walk to “capture” Pokemon. The game also includes PokeStops that are city attractions, historic sites and art instillations for players to collect extra PokeBalls, lures to attract Pokemon to the area as well as other items. Pokemon Gyms, located at various physical locations, are places where

players become trainers and battle other Pokemon players on different teams. Monday’s event was dubbed by Cashman as “The Battle for the CN Tower”, meaning players competed against each other for Toronto’s most iconic Pokemon gym. “It’s Canada’s icon as

well – so I thought it would be the best place to celebrate the launch of the game,” he said. Jill Vienneau came to the event to accompany her son Jackson, but ended up installing the game on her phone as well. She became a Level 5 Pokemon trainer in one day.

“I was skeptical at first,” she said. “But I must say, it’s been a lot of fun. You definitely get sucked into the game.” Chris Mackinnon, 28, came from Etobicoke with his friends. He said Pokemon Go gave them a purpose to go outside. “We’re all out here to live out our childhood dreams of becoming Pokemon trainers,” he said. “We have proven this game is better to play with friends and we’re so glad the game is out for everybody in Canada.” However, Mackinnon admitted the game poses a safety risk for people. “I think the most dangerous thing is that you’ll end up in areas that you’re not familiar with,” he said. Toronto police Const. David Hopkinson said safety plans are in place and police officers are on site to make sure everyone is able to have fun in a safe manner during the event. But more importantly, he advises the public to be in charge of their own safety and not get carried away when playing the game. “The app does not account for your safety, as it does not take into consideration any traffic or trespassing onto private property,” he said. “Be aware of your surroundings, and be aware of how it MORE ONLINE Safety tip list issued for young Pokemon players at bit.ly/pokesafety

Even before it was available here this week, Nintendo’s augmented-reality phone game Pokemon Go was showing numbers to rival social-media giants like Twitter; filling parks and boulevards with giant mobs of like-minded players, hunting for virtual sprites in parks and boulevards, through the camera-lens of their smartphones. As viral phenomenon go, Pokemon Go is near the top of the heap. But it may well signify something more significant than even that. “It’s important not to underestimate how important this phenomenon is on different levels,” says Natalie Zina Walschotts, a Toronto-based game critic and designer who’s been playing and watching the game since it first emerged. “Literally a third of the world is playing this game,” she says. “More people are playing this game than anything else, and that’s important. The other thing that’s crucial is that it has already changed the discourse with which we move through the world.” Moving through the world – and interacting with objects that are not in fact in the world – is a cornerstone of a suite of applications known as augmented reality (AR), as opposed to virtual reality, which through devices like a Oculus Rift headset immerse users in a completely invented

space. Pokemon Go is not the first AR technology or application – several years ago, Google introduced an experimental device Google Glass, which projected images and text on a pair of camera-equipped eyeglasses – but Pokemon is the first to catch on. Given its success, it is not likely to be the last. Walschotts was immediately struck by the power of a game that takes the imaginary friends of childhood, and places them in a familiar environment. “You are literally doing the thing you were pretending to do in a video game, and you are doing it in a real physical space,” she says. And because it is a game – one shared by millions of other users – it is safe, in the way that Google Glass, with its cameras and potentially disturbing and voyeuristic applications, might not be. But make no mistake, augmented reality will soon enough have numerous practical applications. “Augmented reality makes the invisible, visible,” says Toronto-based science fiction writer and strategic foresight expert Karl Schroeder. “It has the potential to be a kind of heads-up display showing us what’s going on around us in a much more live and detailed way than traditional news or word of mouth. Our phones already show us where the nearest restaurant or gas station is… Everything from dating to political activism can be supercharged by AR.”

Jeff Gao

fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Emma Mogus, 17, was looking for a way to help a friend who suffers from ALS better navigate technology when she came up with the idea for a tongue controlled computer mouse. The Tongue-InterfaceCommunication (TiC) is a $10 non-invasive, tongueoperated, customized and programmable USB-HID (Human Interface Device) keyboard with interface circuitry. The prototype consists of a mouth guard with five pressure-sensitive switches across the front that correspond to up, down, left, right and enter. So if the user has a keyboard that pops up on the computer screen – Mogus is working on a wireless TiC version – they can easily type and search, Emma said. And TiC isn’t just for people with ALS; it’s also useful for people with MS or spinal cord injuries, Emma said. Emma drew innovation inspiration from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which calls for research, development and support of all types of assistive technologies with an emphasis on affordable devices. “The

tongue is capable of complex movement, it doesn’t get tired,” Emma said, adding it took about 18 months to develop the prototype after using online forums, courses and tutorials as guides. The TiC prototype has been entered in science fairs, and went through subject testing, but Emma wants to work out any snags before it moves to the next level of testing, adding top priorities are making the device wireless and ensuring the mouth guard fits comfortably for all users. Though TiC hasn’t made it onto shelves yet, it has won its creator the 2016 Weston Youth

Innovation Award from the Ontario Science Centre. Established in 2008, the award encourages and recognizes young Canadian innovators. Emma will be awarded the $2,000 prize at the Ontario Science Centre in the fall, and will work with a multimedia team at the Don Mils Road and Eglinton Avenue site to create an animation to showcase TiC, which will be displayed in the Weston Family Innovation Centre. And Emma is heading to McMaster University in September to study chemical and physical sciences. “I want to help people.”

Province announces installation of 500 new electric vehicle stations A network of charging stations to accommodate burgeoning Electric Vehicle (EV) usage will be in place by next spring, the Ontario government announced Wednesday, July 13. The $20-million plan will see 500 charging stations installed at 250 public and private locations across the province, including more than 60 in Toronto. The move is intended to allay ‘range anxiety’ for EV use and encourage longer drives made possible with more opportunities for recharging the car’s power source. The money comes from an investment fund created by the province to better promote green technologies like electric vehicles, of which there are an estimated 7,000 operating in the province. That number is expected to significantly increase over the next decade. According to the province, 200 granting requests

aware. Not so in the catering industry, however, where food is often frozen and efficiency is the name of the game. Peter Harvey doesn’t buy into that. He wants PG Harvey Events to align with his values – local, seasonal, handmade food.

Game on for street hockey in Toronto, council rules Ball hockey, basketball to be permitted despite recommendation from city transportation staff DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com It will be game on for street hockey players this year, after Toronto Council voted without debate to permit the playing of hockey and basketball on some roads. The move came on July 15, the fourth day of Toronto Council’s last meeting before the summer break, as weary politicians gave the thumbsup to Eglinton-Lawrence Councillor Christin Carmichael Greb’s motion setting out rules for both on-street basketball and hockey. Transportation staff had recommended against allowing the age-old practise of playing ball hockey and basketball on streets with portable

nets, “as it encourages children and adults to play on the roadway” and could create a safety hazard. Council decided it was worth the risk. “We’re dealing with an age where obesity’s a problem and kids don’t have the space to get out and run around,” said Carmichael Greb. “I think that parents need to teach their kids how to be responsible and play safely. Most of us grew up doing it and it’s not anything different now. You yell ‘car’ and you go away, and you yell ‘play’ and you go on and play.” Carmichael Greb moved an amendment to the bylaw prohibiting playing on roads. Now hockey and basketball are permitted on local roads that have a speed limit of 40 km/

hr or less, only during daylight hours and never before 9 a.m. or after 8 p.m.. Those who decide to play are responsible for finding locations that are safe and playing safely, and they waive all claims against the city in the event of mishap. Portable nets are allowed so long as they don’t obstruct sight lines, nor obstruct driveways or create safety hazards for vehicles and pedestrians. They also can’t interfere with street cleaning or traffic control devices and must be removed on completion of the activity. “Now kids can be active — it gives them another mode to be out having fun, learning street smarts and building community,” said Carmichael Greb. “It’s a win for families and for people who think the city has all these silly bylaws that can’t be enforced. It shows you really can make a change a city hall.”

While his seasonal menus evolve, Harvey says some of his signature items include his lobster bisque with cognac cream, and his prized béarnaise sauce. Through weddings, corporate galas, a private Valentine’s eight-course dinner and a children’s Christmas party, he says customizing a menu is one of the most enjoyable aspects of his work – a flexibility he says larger caterers often can’t indulge.

Peter Harvey takes the clean, local organic food trend to catering It’s easy to find locally-grown organic menus these days as consumers become more health-conscious and environmentally

While Harvey has been a chef for many years, he hasn’t always been a businessman. For guidance, he joined the City of Toronto’s Food Venture Program, which covers goal-making, balance sheets and other essential skills. “I think it’s an excellent program that all people planning to start a business in catering should experience,” says Harvey.

Air conditioned TTC debuts Faced with frustrated and sweltering transit riders due to a lack of air conditioning on its subway trains, the TTC has resorted to a novel solution. Some lucky Bloor line riders had a chance to board a Toronto Rocket train last week, which are normally seen on YongeUniversity-Spadina line. The vehicles are characterized by barrier-free access allowing for uninterrupted travel from one end of the train to the other. And blessedly, all Toronto Rockets are air conditioned. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said the goal is to add a few Rockets to Line 2 service while repairs are made on the broken trains. texting and walking on streets wbanning

More than a few eyebrows were raised when Toronto Council passed a motion last week seemingly banning the simple practice of using a handheld device while walking in a shared roadspace.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT The move came as part of the passing of the city’s Vision Zero safety plan, to reduce pedestrian and cycling deaths to none. The motion asks the Ontario Ministry of Transportation for permission to enact the ban. However, ministry spokesperson Patrick Searle said no consent is needed, and wouldn’t be given at any rate. go users receive warning wpokemon

Transportation agencies are advising aspiring Pokemon Go masters to be watchful of their surroundings while they play the hit game. unveils new go buses wmetrolinx

New double-decker GO buses were unveiled last week by Metrolinx. The buses are fully accessible due to their lower floors and wider entrance ramps, which slope more gradually. As per provincial accessibility guidelines, the buses also have automated next-stop announcements. The double-deckers are also low enough to enter stations such as the Union Station bus terminal. These are manufactured by Scottish company Alexander Dennis, which also provided the older fleet.
