Karen Wagman will be gearing up for a two-day, 200-kilometre bike ride this weekend from Toronto to Niagara Falls as part of the 8th annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. Fo r t h e B a y v i e w a n d Lawrence avenues area resident, it will be her first time participating in the event, which she decided to do to honour her mother who died of cancer last November after being diagnosed with terminal thyroid cancer. “I wanted to do something in tribute for her,” said Wagman, recalling how she was inspired by her 78-year-old mother’s toughness while she was battling cancer. “I saw her fight so hard.” That inspiration is what will help Wagman persevere during her long bike trek, she said, which starts in Toronto on Saturday and ends in Niagara Falls the next day. “It could be a good way to push myself and do something for a good cause and do something for myself,” said Wagman, who’s been practising by going on two- to four-hour bike rides >>>ENBRIDGE, page 19

hrough the quiet summer months, there’s a busy workshop at York University where a team of students is working with artist Marlon Griffith to complete costumes for 300 people. Those costumes will be used during a procession as part of the Parapan Am Games cultural activities. Residents will be invited to a workshop the week of June 15 to learn how they can participate. Griffith, a Trinidadian artist, is the Art Gallery of York University’s Louis Odette Sculptor-in-Residence, and was commissioned by the gallery to lead the creation of the outfits for the procession, called Ring of Fire. It’s been nearly two years in the making with the final push to complete the project now. “The project, over the last two years, has evolved into something of a mammoth. I never expected it to get this big,” Griffith said. There are many partners on the project. The procession will include dancers with disabilities from Picasso Pro and Equal Grounds. It will also include the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, members of Toronto’s Capoeira Angola community, young spoken word poets from Jane and Finch, Malvern and Regent Park neighbourhoods. Other partners include Art Starts, SKETCH, The Malvern S.P.O.T., COBA, and Success Beyond Limits. It’s these partnerships that have shaped the project into what it has become, Griffith said. Ring of Fire is inspired by the Anishinaabe Seven Grandfather Teachings, which are wisdom, courage, respect, honesty, truth, humility and love. The procession will have seven large-scale, elaborate costumed sen-

tinels, each one characterizing each of the teachings. Griffith, who has a background in iconography and design, said the design process for the costumes has been heavy to develop symbols for those teachings. It’s about using aboriginal imagery, while being accessible to everyone. “It was about coming up with new iconography to represent each of these teachings, but symbols when people look at them that they can identify immediately with what the

teaching might be,” he said. The seven elaborate characters will be surrounded by a costumed entourage of more than 70 individuals. The entourage costumes are being produced by aspiring fashion designers from the Sew What?! program at Art Starts. Local spoken word artists will perform as orators in the procession. Members of the public will fill out the 300-person procession. Griffith recommends anyone interested in participating in the procession to

come out to the workshops to learn about the project. Griffith, an experienced designer, said this project has been a learning experience for him, as his creations must address the needs of people with disabilities. “I’ve spent many years designing costumes for people but have never looked at the idea of disability. There’s so much you have to take into consideration,” he said. “It’s reimagining movement in public space and how these objects, when worn by

persons with disabilities, negotiate that space.” Griffith said he’s been collaborating with people with disabilities to understand their needs. Some costume pieces, for example, will attach onto wheelchairs or walkers. Griffith has been working with about 15 students from York University’s intensive sculpture summer program to create masks and the sentinel costumes. Among them is North York resident Muettaz Kassim, who is working on his graduate degree, who said it’s a privilege to work on the project. For one, he said he’s honoured to take part in something that’s part of such a major sporting event. But, more importantly, he said, it’s because he gets to work on something that will benefit people with disabilities. “I feel very proud because it’s a noble thing to work for differently abled people,” he said. “It’s not a matter of empathy or sympathy, it’s just duty and privilege to do something for them.” The street procession will take place Sunday, Aug. 9 along University Avenue from Queen’s Park to City Hall. The processional pieces will also be exhibited from Sept. 23 to Dec. 6 at the Art Gallery of York University (AGYU). Ring of Fire is curated by AGYU assistant director Emelie Chhangur.

Improved transportation should be a Pan Am legacy I

magine a legacy from the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games where people get around this city in a more efficient fashion. Given the preparations being made for the Games’ traffic influx, it’s not an unrealistic hope. Hundreds of thousands of additional people are expected in the city and the Greater Toronto Area for the Games next month, so it’s important for everyone to do some transportation planning. This challenge on our roads will be in addition to other planned road construcour view tion projects during the summer months. Toronto stands Key to this planning process – for residents, businesses and to benefit after visitors – will be understanding Games are over the tools and resources available to help get around the city. This week a web-based transportation planner, accessible at www.2015gamestripplanner.ca, was launched by the province. It provides real-time traffic details, such as road closures, traffic speeds, HOV lane locations, a booking feature for accessible parking spots and more. An app is also available for download on Apple, Android and Blackberry devices. That announcement comes a day after GO Transit unveiled its enhanced service plans for the Games. These include more service on routes that serve major events and that Games tickets can be used as valid fare on GO on the day of that event. There’s an additional opportunity from all of this transportation preparation. Traffic is not a new issue to the city. What successes can be shared from these preparations? What lessons can be learned? We have to study the traffic patterns that unfold during the Games. We have to measure the impact of initiatives such as HOV lanes. Surely there are aspects of the web trip planner that can be co-opted for travelling within the city after the Games are done? With the transportation planning, there are additional potential benefits for the city – not just for future special events, but for day-to-day life. That’s what a legacy is all about.

A tastefest of things to come this summer I dropped by Dundas West Fest on Saturday, my first fest of the season. As usual, I expect to take in many more between now and September. For those new to Toronto looking for things to do on summer weekends, if you take in an event with fest in the title, you’re in the right place, hands down. Hands up, too, for that matter. Feet also down and up. And in and out. And not necessarily in that order, either. Fests have that kind of effect on limbs. A close second for summer events that guarantee a good time are ones that include the word festival in their name. Festivals typically have established roots. Fests tend to be of the newer variety. But, suffice it to say, it’s a veritable feast of fests and feastival of festivals this time of year. (I let suffice say it for a good reason. I wouldn’t want anybody thinking I walk around saying feastival.) There are several other

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY words that also pop up with regularity during the season that assure big crowds. Take rib, for example. Just don’t try and take mine. Especially at a ribfest. An event with the word taste in the moniker has “don’t dare miss it” written all over it. People who have lived here for awhile automatically think of the original, the Taste of the Danforth, whenever they hear the word taste. But there are new taste entries being introduced every year. Or is that entrees? Whatever. By the way, for those hearing the title for the first time, at these events you don’t literally taste the street, you sample the foods of the area restaurants. Which is a relief. Tar and cement are just not my cup of tea. I wouldn’t want them in a double double either. Speaking of street, any-

time a street name is in the event title, mark the day on your calendar. They’re the source of many great summer parties, such as Salsa on St. Clair. We’re talking dancing, not eating. It’s not about watching diners spilling sauce on the street. The only spilling to speak of is when the dancing inevitably spills out into the surrounding neighbourhoods. If you hear the word park in an event title you can be sure a good time will be had by all there. Same goes for fair. Ditto for picnic. All three are always a great source of Thisfests and Thatfests. Just thinking about the latter makes me wish it was already the weekend. There’s nothing better than Thatfests. The word zoo is also a popular one this time of year. Singer/songwriter Paul Simon says someone told him, “It’s all happening at the zoo.” He could have been talking about all our zoos, when he wrote that, because every

summer after I visit them, I reply, “I do believe it, I do believe it’s true.” You’ll also hear the word Ex over and over. It’s not referring to somebody’s now insignificant other. Ex is short for Exhibition, which is long for CNE, our amusement park that is on many a Torontonian’s summer list of things to do. All you have to do is just pick a word, any word I mentioned, and if you take the time to check out an event attached to it, though you may not feel like the world is your oyster while you’re there, you’ll definitely feel like the city is. Speaking of which, I’m going to rocking Oysterfest down by the lake this weekend and I can’t wait. Just to see those little dears come out of their shells is worth the price of admission. North York hobby photographer Yasmeen Tian is proud to have her work on display in an exhibit showcasing Toronto. The photographer, a married mother of two who immigrated from Malaysia, is one of four winners in the Snap & Share photo contest, presented by the City of Toronto and Nikon Canada. The photo submissions had to be of parks, forestry or recreation moments. Now, the photos by the winners and runners-up are traveling the city on exhibit. “I feel very honoured,” Tian said. “I’m very humbled to get the award because I do this as a hobby. I never thought of winning any awards.” She said she doesn’t normally participate in photo contests, but was compelled to enter this one as its focus was on Toronto.

Tian said she began taking photos when she got a DSLR camera, a Nikon, about four years ago. She photographs in parks and bushes and generally prefers nature. She shoots around the city and when she’s on trips with her family. “I enjoy shooting. It’s my way to relieve my stress usually,” she said. Her winning photo, in the Parks Category, is of a tree taken at Taylor Creek Trail, near where she lives. In the exhibit, which features approximately 50 photos, she has five pieces on display. entered in various categories. The photo exhibit was at the North York Civic Centre from June 2 to 5. It’s now at the Scarborough Civic Centre, 150 Borough Dr., until June 12, followed by a stop at the Etobicoke Civic Centre, 399 The West Mall, June 15 to 21. The exhibit’s final stop will be at the Toronto City Hall Rotunda, 100 Queen St. W., June 22 to 26. There were more than 1,600 entries in this year’s contest.

Council will have to deal with budget shortfall at some point Remember the 2015 budget? It’s been a few months now, and there’s been a lot of water under the elevated highway, as it were, so it’s understandable if you don’t. The takeaway: property tax increases were kept reasonable, in spite of the fact Toronto was hit with an $86-million shortfall due to housing costs downloaded by the provincial government. Council dealt with that shortfall with some cuts, and a $60-million “loan” from the city’s capital investment program: money that will have to be replenished over the next several years. As dubious councillors voted to approve the scheme, Mayor John Tory promised that soon he would be offering up a plan as to how best to pay back that loan. Two per cent cuts to spending across all departments was one of the ideas bandied about. This week, Toronto’s budget committee received

david nickle the city and passed on Tory’s more refined plan, which amounted to not much more than that. Tory sent a letter to the committee, asking that city departments and city-funded agencies like the TTC be asked to find two per cent of savings. The letter is not legally binding but it’s clear enough as far as it goes. Tory goes on, however, to ask for some other things: he would like to make sure that the property tax increase remains at or below the rate of inflation, and wants the city to continue to fund public transit in an aggressive way. Oh, and these efficiencies mustn’t lead to any reductions in service. On Tuesday, the budget committee had a look at the letter and sent it off to city

staff. As budget chief Gary Crawford noted, these kinds of letters have come out of every mayor’s office since Mel Lastman. Crawford admitted after the meeting that over the next few years council will probably have to figure out some other measures in order to finally balance the budget. Pa r k d a l e - H i g h Pa r k Councillor Gord Perks put things more bluntly: “There will come a day when we have a stark choice between reducing the services we deliver to people and finding a way to pay for them,” he said. “Last term, we had a mayor incapable of facing that choice. I’m hoping this council is a little more adult because the longer we put this off the worse it gets.” I guess we’ll see how bad it gets over the next few years.

The Union Pearson (UP) Express officially launched last week to great fanfare, and empty seats. Saturday marked the first day of service for UP, which promises to operate four trains an hour for nearly 20 hours every day. That means one million fewer car trips to Toronto’s Pearson airport in UP’s first year of operation alone, according to Metrolinx. But even with free rides taken into account, many UP trains were half-empty, leaving some to wonder if the service will be viable in the long run. TO act ON NOISE WALL GRAFFITI wMETROLINX

The taxi alternative Uber took heat after it significantly raised fares during Monday’s TTC meltdown. Customers who ordered an Uber vehicle off their mobile devices – after it was reported the entire TTC subway system was down due to a power outage – reported fare hikes far exceeding the usual rate. That’s the usual operating policy for Uber which claims charging higher rates during busy periods “incentivize” drivers to want to join the ridesharing service.

The Mirror speaks with North York Central Library’s writer-in-residence by DOMINIK KUREK Toronto Public Library’s first aboriginal writer-in-residence Cherie Dimaline is finishing up her term at North York Central Library. The Metis author from the Georgian Bay area published her first book Red Rooms in 2007, followed up by the novel The Girl Who Grew a Galaxy in 2013. Dimaline was the founding editor of FNV Magazine, an aboriginal student publication, and Muskrat Magazine, an online indigenous publication focusing on sovereignty, culture and the celebration of community excellence. She was named 2014 Emerging Artist of the Year at the Ontario Premier’s Saturday Awards for Excellence in the Arts. Residents can meet Dimaline during North York Central Library’s writer-in-residence concluding celebration Saturday, June 20 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the concourse, 5120 Yonge St. There will be drummers, dancers, elders and storytellers sharing stories, songs and dances in a farewell bid. 1 What is your role as writer-in-residence?

You are Toronto Public Library’s first aboriginal writer-in-residence. What has that meant for you?

The writer-in-residence is an amazing opportunity for professional writers to get the time, space and resources to work on their own works while also interacting with the public. I review and provide feedback on manuscripts, meet with members of the writing and reading public to chat and provide guidance, and develop and deliver panels and workshops on a diversity of topics from the challenges of multicultural literary work to accessing arts grants.

As a member of the Georgian Bay Metis community, it is incredibly important to bring my stories, heritage and teachings with me no matter where I am or what I am working on. But to have my Aboriginal community and our unique perspective and understanding of stories highlighted as an asset for this role was a great honour.

What do you hope the public has learned through this focus on aboriginal programming?

What have you enjoyed most about your position? Being a writer is an isolated and isolating career. You spend most of your time being introspective and solitary. As a rule, your day involves daydreaming and silent contemplation. (It may also involve an unhealthy amount of coffee and not getting out of your pajamas for days, but that’s a different kind of story.) Being the writer-in-residence has meant that I’ve had the chance to celebrate literature, to share, and to interact with people on my favourite subject.

3 What advice would you give budding writers to help them find success in their work? With the state of the industry and the proliferation of access to free materials, it is incredibly difficult to see commercial success in the literary world. The best thing I could tell an aspiring writer is to remember that achieving success in your art is not the same as achieving success in the marketplace, and not to confuse the business of writing with the love of writing. I do stress the commitment to the craft, though. There are a lot of rules, guidelines, and technical aspects to this discipline, not to mention the magic that needs to happen to bring it all to life.

My hope is that the public has developed a more personal relationship with their role as our partners in the Canadian treaties, our divided history and our shared future. I hope the public benefitted from meeting my family and my extended family through the stories that I shared, that they came to understand my community and our principles in a grassroots manner. I dearly hope that the public feels a responsibility to be involved in the reconciliation that is ramping up and that they feel that we’re in this together and not on opposite sides of some great divide.

York professor honoured for contributions to psychology A York University research professor is the recipient of this year’s Donald O. Hebb Award for Distinguished Contributors to Psychology as a Science. A senior executive member of the LaMarsh Centre for research on violence and conflict resolution at York University and a senior adjunct scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children, Dr. Debra J. Pepler has won the award for her research on bullying and childhood aggression. Presented by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), the award is given to a CPA member or fellow who has made a significant contribution to Canadian psychology as a scientific discipline. Recipients are psychologists who have enhanced the knowledge base of psychology through their research; exerted influence through leadership as teachers, theorists, spokespeople for the discipline, and/or developers of public policy; and/or substantially influenced the

development of psychology through their work. Pepler has conducted two major research programs on children at risk in the context of peer relationships at school and in the context of the family. She also developed an innovative method of observing children’s interactions beyond the purview of adults and is recognized internationally as an expert on childhood aggression and bullying. ”Dr. Pepler’s research has changed the way we think about bullying, aggression and other forms of violence,” Dr. Joel O. Goldberg, chair and associate professor of York University’s Department of Psychology, said in a release. “Her lifetime scientific achievements stand out among the very best of our Canadian psychologists in terms of productivity, advancement of knowledge and most significantly societal impact.” Pepler received her award at CPA’s 76th Annual Convention in Ottawa June 4 through 6.
