FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com When Brenden Kennedy was a Grade 4 student in 2011, he asked his teacher a seemingly innocent question – why didn’t his school have a hockey team? The 10-year-old was then told if he gathered enough support, a hockey team would be established at Glen Park Public School. He quickly signed up 20 students, and eight months later the Wolf Pack took to the ice for their first season in 2012. Now, years later, not only

North York figure skater works with Elvis Stojko in new movie FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com North York figure skater Michaela du Toit will take to the ice – and the television screen – when she makes her acting debut in the Family Channel’s feature film Ice Girls later this month. The 16-year-old Yonge Street and York Mills Road area resident, who represents South Africa at both junior and senior level competitions, spent about a month filming Ice Girls in Sudbury this past fall, which also stars three-time World Champion and two-time Olympic silver medalist Elvis Stojko. Ice Girls tells the story of 15-year-old Mattie Dane, played by du Toit, as she struggles to regain her confidence and determination after having her dreams shattered. Mattie, whose life is consumed by her sport, finds her

world crashing down after suffering an injury at a major competition. After falling on hard times, her family moves to a small town, leaving the teen struggling to find her place in her new surroundings.

It was unbelievable to work with him (Elvis Stojko) as a skater. – Michaela du Toit

Mattie finds some solace at the local skating rink, but talented skater Heather (played by Canadian figure skater Taylor Hunsley), accompanied by her ultra-competitive mother (Natasha Henstridge), quickly reminds Mattie what she’s been missing by not being on the ice. Mercury (Stojko), the local rink manager and former figure skater, sees Mattie’s potential

and sets out to mentor and guide her back on her path to greatness. Gold and silver Olympic medalist Tessa Virtue, who last competed with ice dance partner Scott Moir at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, also appears in the movie as a guest spot. The pair recently announced plans to return to international competition for the 2016-17 figure skating season. As for her character, du Toit said there are similarities between herself and Mattie. “She’s a strong person in general, so dedicated to everything she does, and she loves skating,” she said, adding she worked with an acting coach for the role. “She wants to succeed, she has a hunger for it.” A hockey player at the age of six, du Toit switched to figure skating a few years later and now trains at the Richmond Training Centre in Richmond Hill five days a week under

coaches Andrei Berezintsev and Inga Zusev. Du Toit, who has competed at the international level at Junior Grand Prix, Junior World Championships, and Four Continents competitions, said although her focus is skating and making it to the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics in South Korea, she hopes acting will be her long-term career. “Skating right now is obviously a big part of my life,” said du Toit, adding she used to represent Canada before switching to South Africa, where her family is originally from. Along with honing her acting skills, Ice Girls gave the teen another incredible experience – meeting Stojko. “It was unbelievable to work with him as a skater,” she said. “And his acting is unbelievable as well.”

Sofia Jimenez, right, and her classmates work out Monday to a video shot by students at Seneca Hill Public School.

Not only are young Seneca Hill Public School students eating healthier, they now have a fun new video to work out to. The Seneca “Hustle”, created by Grade 3 students for their younger schoolmates, was made to help emphasize the importance of physical activity, said teacher Melanie Borst. “The kids love it,” said the grades 1 and 2 teacher at the Don Mills Road and Finch Avenue school. “It’s fun and exciting.” Grade 3 teacher Niki

Koutsovasilis, whose students were involved in making the video, said it’s important to promote a healthy lifestyle while also having fun.

The students are having fun learning how to be more healthy in their life. – teacher Melanie Borst

Thanks to several Metro Green Apple School Program grants, students are also working new, healthy foods

into their diets once a week, such as kale, Borst said. “We’re trying to implement healthy eating,” she said, adding new foods will be tried for about three months and students will then discuss how much they liked, or disliked it. “The students are having fun learning how to be more healthy in their life.” Angela Halkidas, principal of Seneca Hill, said she’s pleased young learners are developing healthy habits. “Melanie Borst and Niki Koutsovasilis are two remarkable teachers at Seneca Hill who are engaging students in making good food choices

as well as enjoying physical activity,” she said. “We are especially proud of the Seneca Hill Hustle. Our Grade 3 students took on a leadership role in creating the video, which is being used by Seneca Hill kindergarten, Grade 1, 2 and 3 students during daily physical activity. “What a fun way to build a healthy Seneca Hill lifestyle.” According to the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, for health benefits, children aged five to 11 years should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity daily.

anning chewing tobacco in public spaces, arenas and sports fields should be a piece of cake. Given Toronto’s history dealing with tobacco regulation, it’s more likely to be a gooey lump of chaw. Chaw is one of the terms for so-called smokeless tobacco products. Historically popular in the American south and midwest, the product also known as chew, grizzly, skoal and snuff has been spreading in at least visibility thanks to its popularity among professional and semi-professional athletes – in particular, baseball players. The use of the product is extremely unhealthy. It might not get into the lungs, but it’s just as addictive as cigarettes and pipes and it’s associated with mouth, esophageal and pancreatic cancers, gum disease, and heart disease and stroke. Its use is on the rise among young people. In it’s used by six per cent our view Ontario, of students in grades 7 to 12, or 58,200 students (that according Chewing to the 2015 Ontario Student Drug and Health Survey). That’s up tobacco use is Use from 4.6 per cent in 2011. The rate is lower for Toronto on the rise students – the increase is just three per cent here. But without a doubt, the power professional athletes exert as role models is an influence, and a bad one in this case, on any young person. This week, Toronto Board of Health Chair Joe Mihevc announced he’ll be asking the chief medical officer of health to draft a bylaw that would restrict the use of chewing tobacco from city facilities and public venues such as arenas and sports fields – including the Rogers Centre where the Toronto Blue Jays play. Council ought to approve the bylaw when it comes forward, as a matter of responsible stewardship, just as it has approved ground-breaking bylaws preventing smoking in bars and restaurants and bingo halls. Critics might argue a bylaw in this case would differ from one restricting cigarette smoking: there is no issue of second-hand smoke affecting the health of non-smokers. This may be so but it doesn’t mean there’s no second-hand influence. And the influence of celebrity athletes, casually gumming a wad of toxins, is demonstrable and needs to be stopped.

column

Union’s ‘job for life’ being phased out Toronto council won a significant victory in its negotiations with the city’s outside workers – no question. Forget about the less costly benefit plan and the meagre pay increases that CUPE Local 416 agreed to. That’s just money. The big, champagnecork-popping win is on something more fundamental. Now that this contract is signed, it won’t be long before Toronto can shed itself of a significant number of unionized garbage collectors by putting out a tender call, having a couple of meetings and contracting out garbage collection in most and eventually all of the city. Conservative members of council and former mayors have been hoping to contract out garbage collection since amalgamation, when former Etobicoke mayor and west-end councillor Doug Holyday came extolling the virtues of old Etobicoke’s contracted-out garbage

david nickle the city collection. Etobians were very happy, thank you very much, with their contractor-delivered household garbage collection. The trucks came on time, picked up the garbage, and if there was ever a problem between the drivers and the owners, well that was their problem. Etobicoke was strike proof. Not so the rest of Toronto. In North York, Scarborough, East York and York and Toronto, city worker strikes meant that garbage moldered in garages and backyards until it got rank enough to heap in city parks and surface lots. CUPE Local 416, the union representing garbage workers, had real leverage at the bargaining table because of that. Former councillor Jane Pitfield put it most nakedly when in the

run-up to her failed 2006 mayoral campaign, she told reporters that she thought it was time to “phase out” unions. Toronto’s outside workers have agreed to something like it, after they ratified the provision in the contract that phased out what another former councillor and deputy mayor Case Ootes dubbed “jobs for life.” That was a provision that former mayor Mel Lastman’s administration agreed to, that prevented the city from replacing workers with more than 15 years seniority in the event their position was contracted out. That provision has been the single barrier to the contracting out of garbage collection citywide. It’s why even uber-conservative mayor Rob Ford could only contract out half the city. It’s why a strike in warm weather would still be a political nightmare for councillors and mayors who want to get re-elected

in wards east of Yonge Street. It’s why CUPE Local 416, whose membership is less than a quarter that of the city’s inside workers’ union CUPE Local 79, has real power in a collective bargaining session. That power hasn’t been removed, but it is, as Pitfield put it, being phased out. In 2019, the final outside worker will cross the line into an inaccurately named “job for life.” He or she will enjoy another decade or two of job protection. The rest of the city’s workers will serve at the pleasure of Toronto council, and the jobs that they have will be as good as Toronto council deems to be their due. No doubt about it. In love, war and contract negotiations, to the victors go the spoils.

Funds raised to help more kids play hockey >>>from page 1 helped coach this year’s Winter Classic. “It’s grown so big.” Brenden’s dad, Colin Kennedy, who also helped coach the Winter Classic, said he’s pleased to see how others have embraced the event. “It’s an incredible ride of the excitement of hockey at its purest form at its natural level,” he said, adding his daughter, Hannah-Marea, played for the Wolf Pack last year. This year’s Winter Classic was made up of two Wolf Pack teams who took on players from Armour Heights Public School and Brock Public School. A 3-on-3 exhibition game between Wolf Pack

alumni from the inaugural team was also held. Money raised from a raffle, which included Toronto Maple Leaf tickets and signed hockey memorabilia, will be donated to Hyundai Hockey Helpers Program and KidsSport Ontario, Kennedy said, adding last year $1,117.25 was raised for the organizations. Kennedy is already thinking of next year’s Winter Classic, which he hopes will see the alumni team take on police officers from 13 Division. “Last year we had a skills competition and this year we had the alumni game and a free skate, so we’ll see what we can do differently,” he said. Like last year, Karl Subban, father of Montreal Canadiens

defenceman P.K. Subban, was on hand to offer support and words of encouragement to the young players. “I like (the hockey program) because it is an opportunity for kids to do something that they have always wanted to do but was not possible until the volunteers from the school and parents from the community came together to make it happen,” he told The Mirror. “I know what it is like because it mirrors my situation as a child growing up in Sudbury, Ontario and is the reality of so many children today. We can’t reach all our children in the four walls of the classrooms. Sometimes it is on the field, court or between the boards on the ice.”

Dakoda Robinson, right, battled for the puck against Navil Malale, left, and Jacob Rawnsley, centre, during the second annual Glen Park Public School Winter Classic tournament, hosted by the Wolf Pack on Friday.

Eight-year-old math whiz gives tax lecture to business students

hands up

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Carlie Weinreb walks to the front of the room filled with business students, and using a black marker and paper – while standing on a chair – she explains how the income tax system works in Canada using mental math techniques. The Avenue Road and Hwy. 401 resident was six years old. That was two years ago. Now, at the ripe old age of eight, the Summit Heights Public School Grade 3 student recently gave a similar lecture at the University of Toronto, and has related presentations lined up in coming weeks at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Windsor – just in time for tax season. The young tax whiz started math studies at age two under the tutelage of her father, Lorne, a chartered accountant. Staff photo/DAN PEARCE

Carlie Weinreb is an eight-year-old tax whiz kid.

“I study every night,” Carlie said. The youngster, who said she lectures because she enjoys teaching people, said math comes easily for her. “I like all math,” she said, adding she often calculates the tax while out shopping. “It’s easy. My favourite math is tax because tax is all the math – adding, subtracting, percentage, greater than, lesser

than.” Though she helps out at tax time by doing the returns of her father’s clients, she’s still deciding on a future career, which may or may not involve tax. And in exchange for her tax lectures, Carlie requests donations to The Children’s Wish Foundation, a Canadian charity which grants wishes of children diagnosed with a

life-threatening illness. Carlie acknowledges her presentation skills have become better over the years, noting she now faces the audience, speaks louder, and takes time for questions – and has yet to be stumped. Her dad, Lorne, said learning math tax allows young students such as his daughter to engage in real-world situations. “If kids apply the math, they have a better understanding,” he said, adding Carlie enjoys dance, piano, and cooking classes when she’s not crunching numbers. “Tax is basic math.” Lorne, who spends about half an hour a night going over math with Carlie, said it was she who requested to lecture the business students two years ago, when Lorne was scheduled to do some tax training. “She doesn’t seem to be intimidated,” he said. “I’m pretty amazed.”

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Dozens of at-risk kids in Toronto will have a more comfy night’s sleep thanks to the efforts of the students of Bannockburn School. Bannockburn, near Avenue Road and Wilson Avenue, held its second annual pyjama day on Friday with students attending class in their sleepwear. As part of the event, students also donated a new pair of pyjamas to Moorelands Community Services, a midtown agency that provides leadership-building activities, camp opportunities, skills development and more for youngsters from lowincome neighbourhoods. The pyjama day came about thanks to the efforts of Grade 4 students Zoe Finkelshtein and Alexis Maheras, who launched the initiative. PJ Day

“We wanted to have a pyjama day, and we thought if we were going to have a pyjama day, it would be nice to have a fundraiser at the same time,” Zoe said. The two girls approached school staff and got the goahead last year. At the first Bannockburn pyjama day, they collected 83 pairs of pyjamas, a number they expected to eclipse with Friday’s event. For a school with a total of 125 students, bringing in that many pairs of pyjamas was impressive and showed that Bannockburn students had bought in to the idea. ‘Bought a pair’ “This morning, our lower elementary students were selling our own Bannockburn pyjamas, so a lot of families came in to drop their kids off, bought a pair of those and donated them,” said Meg Kahnert, head of

Bebe and Herby are looking for new families In this month’s adopt-a-pet column, you’ll meet Herby, a shepherd mix who is looking to find an understanding owner who will help him gain confidence and see his goofy side. You’ll also be introduced to a tabby cat named Bebe, who has blossomed but is still being overlooked for adoption – why has she been waiting so long for that special someone? Herby Handsome Herby is a shy fellow who is looking for a quiet, calm home. He hasn’t been exposed to big city sights and sounds so new situations can be somewhat unnerving for Herby. Once he has acclimated to an environment and feels safe, he can be playful, affectionate and even goofy! He would do

lorraine houston critter chatter best in an experienced adult home. He’s been with other dogs at the shelter and does well with dogs of similar size and energy level. At seven years young, Herby still needs plenty of physical and mental stimulation – in fact shelter staff say he would benefit with some positive reinforcement training to help build his confidence. Herby is a neutered male German shepherd mix. If you are interested in him, please contact the Oakville and Milton Humane Society at 905-845-1551. See Herby on the web at www.omhs.ca/ adopt-a-pet Bebe When Bebe first came into the care of Team Cat Rescue she was confused and frightened. When her owner died, she lost the only home she had ever known. With love, patience and reassurance, Bebe has come a long way

thanks to her caring and understanding foster parents. She is now a sweet and gentle girl who loves affection and enjoys being petted and brushed. Once she’s comfortable, Bebe will come say hello to new people and ask to be petted. She has even learned to socialize and interact with a fellow feline and seems to be enjoying playtime! She has been waiting a long time for someone to notice that under her shy exterior is a girl who is now ready to love again. Bebe is a five-year-old spayed female tabby. If you are interested in her please contact Team Cat Rescue at info@teamcatrescue.ca. See Bebe on the web at www.teamcatrescue.ca Lorraine Houston is director of Speaking of Dogs, an organization devoted to education, outreach and rescue. Her column appears the last Thursday of every month. Contact her at lhh4dogs@rogers.com
