Persian North York photo journalist and filmmaker Pooyan Tabatabaei experienced war growing up. Despite the conflict between Iran and Iraq, his life went on. Now, at age 34 and living in Canada the past 15 years, he sees the same continuing throughout the Middle East. War happens, but life continues. He’s showing this in his 16-minute film Unshaven, set in Libya during the Arab Spring, at the Eastern Breeze International Film Festival in Toronto running from May 6 to 11. He is also the executive director of the festival. His film will be shown Sunday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at Carlton Cinema, 20 Carlton St. Tabatabaei calls Unshaven an experimental film that marries images of front-line conflict with everyday life for citizens of war-torn places, particularly >>>AWARD, page 7

Cycling cop is Philly-bound for SickKids
Chris Hadfield launches space exhibit
Sgt. Stephen Hicks of 31 Division in North York will be on his bike again starting this Saturday ready to ride 960 kilometres from Toronto to Philadelphia. And he’ll be bringing along 17 other riders including 11 police officers, four York University students, a local teacher and a Toronto Hydro representative, to take part in the annual Cops Cycle for Kids ride. “We’ve done six events so far over the last 10 years,” said Hicks, who first got involved in 2004 when he rode his bike to New York City. At the time, Hicks recalled wanting to do something for a good cause after learning his father was dying of cancer. Partnering with Cops Cycle for Kids, which has raised more than $250,000 for the Hospital for Sick Children since 1991, Hicks has gone to Hamilton, Calgary, Boston and Chicago. “I always rode a bike and thought I might as well try it,” said Hicks, who has been training with his colleagues on stationary bikes throughout the winter and three times a week riding 40 to 50 kilometres. “We’re the old guys on this team now.” But with new riders joining the cause, Hicks is hopeful the event will continue to grow. “We made it grow every year to the point we have 18 riders this year,” he said. “We’re probably going to reach 50 next year.” The ride begins May 9 and continues to May 14 starting from SickKids in downtown Toronto to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. All donations in Canada go directly to the Paediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT) at SickKids, which is a team of health care professionals taking care of children with lifelimiting conditions.

Astronaut drops by Science Centre for exhibit opening
at the dinner table. If they didn’t have the answer, he would be dissatisfied with not knowing. So back in the 1970s to search for those answers, they had the Encyclopaedia Britannica. “The encyclopaedia was our Internet,” he said. Hadfield also encouraged people, whether they want to aspire to become an astronaut or any other profession, to ask themselves what’s the first thing they need to learn and change in order to begin going after their goals and dreams. For him, it was about being active and eating well to be in good physical shape as well as knowing how to make good decisions, which he put into action as an engineer and a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot. Visitors can follow his career trajectory, from watching the Apollo 11 moon landing to his time at the International Space Station, at the exhibit, which was built in house by a team of scientists, designers and writers working together at the Ontario Science Centre (OSC). “He really is one in a million, but he can also inspire millions,” said Dr. Mary Jane Conboy, OSC director of science content and design, adding
Chris Hadfield helped launch the “Be An Astronaut” exhibit last week at the Ontario Science Centre where he loaned a number of items now on display, including the flight suits he wore on his first and second missions to space. For visitors taking a look at the exhibit, particularly the youth, Hadfield said he hoped they would see some of the items like his NASA flight gloves or pilot helmet and then ask questions about them. “To have your curiosity piqued and start to investigate why in a stimulusrich environment, it’s a perfect storm for learning,” said Hadfield, who was the first Canadian astronaut to walk in space and served as commander of the International Space Station. He recalled having that curious mind growing up, often posing a question to his parents

Know your city with Heritage Toronto tours W
hether you’re a resident or a tourist, how much do you know about the City of Toronto? Let’s go one step further: how much do you know about the city’s rich history? The answers vary from a lot to very little; however, even those who know a lot about Toronto could certainly use a refreshing experience. So with that in mind, now is the time to take one of the many guided tours offered by Heritage Toronto, slated to run through to Sunday, Oct. 4, and get a city refresher. From Etobicoke to Scarborough, North York to all the pockets in the downtown core, the city is alive with a rich and diverse history, making any day or weekend tour an experience every Torontonian should have. “Heritage Toronto’s fun and our view informative tours give citizens the chance to see Toronto’s in a way they Head outside neighbourhoods never have before,” said Heritage and explore Toronto executive director, Francisco Alvarez. Toronto If you’re looking to get started quickly, May is Asian Heritage Month with tours that take you through Chinatown, Korea Town, and the city’s Filipino community. In Etobicoke you can take in the ‘Hurricane Hazel Revisited’ tour. The ‘Guild Park’ tour talks about the long and rich artistic history of the southeast Scarborough area. In North York, why not take in the ‘Downsview Park’ tour? City neighbourhoods are also the focus of tours such as ‘Leslieville: Orange & Green’. There are also bike tours, music history tours, and tours such as ‘Before Toronto’ that take participants on an archaeological bus tour of the city’s first 13,000 years. Spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner – even fall has tours to offer – so why not take full advantage of our great city – voted the No. 1 place to live in the world to live by The Economist magazine. Toronto has so much to offer, including some fascinating history that’s well worth learning more about. So head out and experience Toronto in ways you’ve never experienced before. For a full list of tours (you can filter by type and time) visit http://heritagetoronto.org/tours/2015tours

column
It’s official: spring has finally sprung During the winter, whining about the temperature had become so contagious it seemed like just about everybody in my neighborhood was hiding inside because of the cold. Heck, I saw a tumbleweed roll down my street it was so empty. I mean that. An actual tumbleweed. I should know. I was the one who tossed it. I did it many times, in fact. It was just me and that old tumbleweed all by our little lonesomes for all of February and most of March. I was getting pretty good at rolling that sucker, too, I must say. I had a mean knuckler that would have made R.A. Dickey envious. I had a deceptive slider that would have given Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion fits. I had a mesmerizing change up, a wicked curve
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY ball and a nasty fastball. There would be no calls to the bullpen to replace me, no siree. I was in it for the long haul. I was the starter and the closer all rolled into one. My exploits did not go unnoticed. I was being followed closely on Sportsnet, TSN and ESPN. Fans all over the world were downloading my app. I had gone viral on YouTube. There was talk of a duet with Miley. The Donald was calling to talk to me about being on Celebrity Apprentice. Yeah, life was good, alright. Alas, nothing lasts forever. Before long that wimpy tumbleweed started whin-
ing it was too cold for him, too, and he disappeared inside along with everyone else. It was like a ghost town around here after that, I tell ya. Then when spring got off to a late start it was more of the same, barren feeling outside. The flowers refused to come out. The early birds slept in. The squirrels were interested in gathering dust, not nuts. To add insult to injury? Even the owls didn’t give a hoot. Then seemingly out of nowhere, temperatures picked up dramatically this week and have actually passed the seasonal averages and suddenly everyone and everything has come out of hibernation. The flowers are finally starting to make an appearance. The early birds are giving those worms a run for their
money. The squirrels are collecting overtime. And the dogs are barking up a storm. But it’s the people who are really standing out. I honestly can’t remember it ever being so crowded in these parts. It looks good on the neighbourhood to see so many out and about. Best of all, those winter scowls are nowhere to be seen. Everybody is smiling. Well, not everyone. The tumbleweed seems a little down in the dumps with nothing to do anymore. Poor guy. So, if you’ll excuse, I’ll take him to Tim Hortons for a tumble tumble. That’ll snap him out of it in no time. Award-winning journalist screens film >>>from page 1 for children. “For them, life is always going on. It doesn’t matter if there’s war. I’m showing a different aspect of living,” he said. “It shows the harshness of war and it shows the essence of living.” Tabatabaei recalls being a boy of about
eight in Iran when his and his friends’ homes were bombarded. His mom worked as a nurse through the conflict and the family moved around to find a safer place. “That’s what I’m trying to show in this film, too,” he said. An award-winning journalist, Tabatabaei
has seen conflicts and news-breaking events around the world and his images have appeared in Time
To
Magazine, The Toronto Star, Panorama, BBC, CBC and more. He spent about eight months in 2010 during the Arab Spring in the Middle East, including at the start and end of the war in Libya. This year’s festival will feature short and midlength films of all genres from 32 countries, which
contain an Eastern taste or philosophy, including from countries in Asia, the Middle East and northern Africa. Each showing at this year’s festival features eight films, running a total of 70 to 90 minutes.

Spadina subway extension on target for 2017 opening, says TTC C DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com TTC CEO Andy Byford is touting the construction progress of the Toronto-York Spadina subway extension (TYSSE), saying the project is moving towards the target date of opening in late 2017. The tunnels are in place and the majority of the tracks have been laid south of Steeles Avenue. “The project overall is about 70 per cent complete. The tunnels were completed back in 2013, the track is nearly all laid, the power rail is going in, the station boxes themselves are all in differing levels of construction,” he said, standing approximately 25 metres below ground on
the platform level of the future Hwy. 407 subway station. Byford and TTC staff gave media organizations a tour of several of the future subway stations on Monday, May 4 with a walk through the stations themselves and the track tunnels, revealing that much of the heavy work is complete. “It’s been a while since I’ve been to this station (Hwy. 407). I’m struck by how much it has advanced since I was last here,” Byford said. “The contractor has really powered on and that’s what we need. We need two really long, dry summers. That is critical to meeting our end date of 2017.” The Hwy. 407 station is about 60 to 65 per cent
complete, with the station’s structure being nearly entirely finished. About 60 per cent of the tracks along the extension are laid, including in all of the tunnels south of Steeles Avenue, save for the tracks at the York University and Pioneer Village stations. Joanna Kervin, TTC director of third party, planning and property, said the tracks
should be fully laid in 2016. After that, the tunnels will be outfitted. This includes installing dry fire line piping, hangers for signals, and running of cables through tunnels. Then, crews will bring power to the tunnels, scheduled for April 2017. Once power is in place, the TTC can test the subway extension before it is opened to the public. “Our drive for the schedule

is getting everything ready to get that power turned on,” Kervin said. “That’s critically important.” She said there are approximately 800 to 900 workers per day through the TYSSE project. All the stations along the extension will be fully accessible and are planned to open simultaneously. Downsview Park station will integrate TTC subway and GO Transit train services in one station. The station is about 85 per cent complete, and the tracks have been laid. The station features large windows that bring natural light to the station, including down at the station level. parking on site. The Hwy. 407 station, located in York Region, was the northernmost station on the tour. The station will feature a 550-space commuter parking lot, an 18-bay bus terminal for GO and York Region Transit (YRT) and a future connection for the Hwy. 407 Transitway. The station will have large stained-glass windows to bring natural light inside as well. Media also visited the future Pioneer Village station, located on Steeles Avenue. The station will feature bus terminals for TTC and YRT vehicles, and will have parking.

Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for student Photo/Courtesy
Sargam Yagnik is the only North American to be selected for the Around the World in 80 Hours Student Fellowship program.
>>>from page 1 ences and events. Yagnik added that France and Belgium were just added to her itinerary as well. She learned of the once-in-alifetime opportunity through her program co-ordinator at Humber. But it seems the combination she had of education, management experience and a love for travel helped her get chosen for the program along with
two other students from Denmark and United Arab Emirates. “Around the World in 80 Hours Student Fellowships are awarded to distinguished university students who demonstrate an exceptional interest in corporate travel management and a commitment to working in the global business travel industry,” said Amber Kelleher, ACTE managing director of global engagement, in a
statement. Yagnik realized she wanted to work in the tourism industry after backpacking in Australia, New Zealand and Asia, and living in Switzerland for four months, all after graduating from York University with a sociology degree. “I want to travel for work,” she said. “It was exactly what I was looking for.”

Tory needs to talk austerity
A
WHEN CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK ASKS FOR YOUR HELP, WE GET IT.
t the start of the whirling vortex of chaos (otherwise known as the May meeting of Toronto Council) next year’s budget seems very far off. It is not, of course. While council and the city deal with the ramifications of open-season on food trucks, a new city manager, the quest for a just taxi license and gender balance on the Toronto Transit Commission, the city’s 2016 budget looms large – larger than is typical, in fact, thanks to the odd way council decided to balance the 2015 budget. This was in March, when council approved a 2.75 per cent property tax increase for homeowners, and filled a $60-million shortfall by effectively borrowing from the city’s own capital financing capacity in future years. Services were generally sustained or even enhanced, taxpayers were mollified with a rate-of-inflation
going to have to start talking about more difficult things: strategies for cutting waste in the city’s administrative bureaucracy, cuts and fee increases. Tory has so far avoided talking about fees very much, effectively ruling out the operationally sensitive but politically difficult application of “revenue tools” such as road tolls and consumption taxes. Without a willingness to increase or enact those things, the city is left with only one option: austerity. The city doesn’t have a terrible record on measured austerity. In general, residents seem to like their services and react with a certain amount of organized pique when they are threatened. When the matter finally comes up, it will show even a rough-and-tumble council meeting such as this week’s for the honeymoon that it is.
david nickle the city increase, and the pain, Mayor John Tory promised, would come later. Tory also promised to let Toronto know in the coming weeks how he would deal with the 2016 gap between what it costs to run the city as it stands, and the diminishing amount of money actually available to the city. Although Tory would not use the words, it all suggested that in 2016, Torontonians would be looking at some form of service cuts. Given that, it’s understandable that Tory has not yet made good on that one promise, to explain how he’ll balance things. So far, the Tory mayoralty has been a good-news affair. His announcements generally aren’t about telling people what they can’t have, but what he will provide. Very soon, our mayor is

Diamond separation meeting wDavenport Metrolinx will hold a public meeting next week to share its plan for separating the Davenport Diamond rail crossing. It’s already been reported Metrolinx will launch an Environmental Assessment in late summer for building an overpass to elevate GO Transit rail service over CP Rail freight train traffic which meet at the crossing. Metrolinx established a resident panel to offer suggestions for transforming the lands freed up below the overpass, which could be used for new public space. The meeting takes place Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Centre Visit www.metrolinx. com/RERDavenport PRAISE FOR BYFORD’S OF TRANSIT wUSE
Breaking news: a public official was spotted riding the TTC. That may not seem newsworthy, particularly since the official in question is TTC CEO Andy Byford,
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT who makes regular use of the Better Way, doesn’t own a car and has never had a driver’s licence. But after a Reddit Toronto user spotted Byford on the subway speaking to riders last Friday – stopping even to pick up some trash off the subway floor – it was enough to spawn a message thread (www.tinyurl.com/ llbcjpy) with dozens of comments praising the TTC’s top official. MINISTRY chided FOR ROAD CARE wTRANSPORT
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation promised swift changes following a report by the auditor general critical of its decision to contract out winter maintenance to the private sector. Released last week, Bonnie Lysyk’s report concludes contracting out work to the private sector has led to reduced expenses for the Ministry, but at the cost of a steady decline in mainte-
nance standards. In a statement, the ministry said the findings align with its internal review of winter maintenance standards and that it would report within 60 days on how to implement changes. FINISHING TOUCHES FOR UNION PLATFORM The TTC announced it will complete construction of the second subway platform at Union Station in coming weeks. The station was closed again last weekend as work crews completed final touches to the Yonge line platform ahead of the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. It will be the last time the station is closed before the Games begin in July due to the construction. The platform opened last year in an unfinished state. Its final design includes an “art wall” that doubles as a glass divider spanning the length of the Yonge and University platforms.
