Bladder Cancer Canada walk takes place at Sunnybrook Park Sunday DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Longtime Toronto sports broadcaster and college professor Jim Van Horne woke up one morning, went to the washroom and filled the toilet bowl with blood. Until that morning, he had no prior indication something was wrong. He knew little about bladder cancer, and he certainly was not aware of anyone suf-
fering from it. “I mean bladder cancer, what the hell is that? It’s not very well known, but it’s a nasty disease,” he said. That was eight years ago. Today, and still fighting bladder cancer, the 64-year-old speaks about the little talkedabout disease that is the fourth most common form of cancer among men and 12th among women in Canada. >>>SEVERAL, page 17

Hospital’s healing garden a special place Offers peaceful, private setting for mom dealing with son’s illness Fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com
Minna Rhee’s son was just two hours old when breathing issues developed. Born just shy of 38 weeks with weak lungs at North York General Hospital (NYGH), little Nathan developed pneumonia shortly after his Aug. 17 arrival. He was admitted into the Leslie Street and Hwy. 401 hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where he has remained for the last two weeks. “The first couple of days I was a basket case,” said Rhee from inside the hospital, taking a break from her baby son’s side. “I had two children at home who wanted to see their brother.” She discovered NYGH’s Healing Garden accidentally a few days after Nathan’s birth when she needed fresh air to catch her breath, noting her Fitbit was reminding her to get her steps in. Her plan was to walk around the hospital’s parkade, but once outside she saw yellow
picnic umbrellas. Curious, Rhee wandered around the trees and flowers before crossing the parking lot at the east end of the parkade and setting her sight on rose bushes, a gazebo, and a fountain situated in the Don River. “I could hear the soothing sound of trickling water,” she recalled as she got closer to the river and fountain. “It was almost a natural progression to start breathing. I was taking deeper, slower breaths and it was very restorative. I could hear crickets and see birds and butterflies.” Unbeknownst to Rhee, she had stumbled upon the Healing Garden, which has been part of the hospital since about 2009. Even if she can only slip away to the Healing Garden for five minutes to “meditate, pray, and cry”, she always feels better after, she said. “It’s nice to be able to have a private place to do that,” she said. “It’s a Godsend. You can’t control what happens to you, but you control how you react.

Minna Rhee, whose child is being cared for at the North York General hospital neo-natal intensive care unit, takes a break in the hospital's Healing Garden.
I didn’t want to be a sobbing mess forever, and this place helped me come back.” Cliff Harvey, vice president of planning, facilities and support service, said the garden gives patients, family, and staff the opportunity to step
into a natural setting. “The greatest beneficiary are the patients who are able to get outdoors,” he said. “Family members also use it, and it’s also for staff. It’s hard to imagine (Hwy. 401) is the next door neighbour.”
A landscape architect planted 310 trees, 367 new shrubs, and 167 vines throughout the garden in 2010, Harvey said, adding a sculpture created by a Montreal doctor will be unveiled in the garden in October.

oronto marks an important milestone Sunday with celebrations to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Toronto City Hall. The two half-circle towers, with the council chamber pod in the middle, that dominates Nathan Phillips Square is an iconic symbol of the city not just for residents but for people around the world. It’s one of the great things about Toronto that should make us proud. To celebrate this Sunday, there will be a free event from noon to 5 p.m. featuring entertainment by the Jordan John Band and a performance by STOMP dance competition finalists. Also taking the stage will be a group called the Clamshell Quintet, which is made up of four city councillors and a deputy city manager. Master builders from LEGO will be on hand to help residents build a replica of our view City Hall and the surrounding area. Inside, there will be photoIt’s one of the graphs, architectural models and of the original furnishings great things some specifically designed for the buildabout Toronto ing. As was shown during this summer’s Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, the building and Nathan Phillips Square are an important gathering place for all residents. Whether it’s hosting special celebrations, New Year’s Eve parties, or serving as a nice place to sit and have lunch in the summer or go for a skate in the winter, the area is always busy and reflective of life in the city. It also serves as an historical reminder of pre-amalgamation Toronto as its formation coincided in many ways with the creation of Metropolitan Toronto in the late 1950s. An open competition was started in 1957 to design the new city hall, and the eventual winner was Finnish architect Viljo Revell. Ground was broken in 1961 by then City of Toronto mayor Nathan Phillips. It officially opened on Sept. 13, 1965. Along with celebrating a community gathering spot and a uniquely designed building, residents can also use this month to find out more about how Toronto City Hall came to be and how the city has developed over the past 50 years. Free lectures on that very subject are set for today and Sept. 24 in the council chambers starting at 7 p.m. For more on the celebrations, go to www.toronto.ca/ cityhall50th

A back-to-school survival anthem

t’s been a rough first week. Getting the kids back to school is always a grind. I’m so stressed out I don’t even have the strength to unwind. Then I remember the six magic words and at once I’m energized. One burger, one shake, one fries.
have what it takes to get in my dreams. And though fried chicken ain’t chopped liver it just don’t tantalize. Like one burger, one shake and one fries.
So I’ll pick them up after class Friday And drop them at their grandma’s by 4. And when my car leaves that driveway I’ll put the pedal to the floor. Then make a beeline for the mall food court while I begin to fantasize About one burger, one shake, one fries.
My doctor wishes I shared the same passion for spinach and peas. And that I didn’t look at broccoli like it had some kind of disease. But no vegetable alive (and I’m including onions) can bring tears to my eyes. Like the sight of one burger, one shake, one fries.
I’ve got nothing against pizza. Or burritos stuffed with beans. It’s just that they don’t

nutritional value there’s precious little proof. And though all that fat and sugar goes straight to my stomach and thighs I gotta have one burger, one shake, one fries. Well, the moral of this story is no mystery. There’s only one meal that wields this power over me. So you can sing for your favourite supper. Me, I’d rather rhapsodize about one burger, one shake, one fries. Yeah, it’s all that I need. I don’t have to supersize. One burger, one shake. There can be no mistake. Respect the park: reader To the editor: I am shocked by the litter in Fountainhead Park. Candy wrappers. Pop cans. Coffee cups. Juice boxes. Cigarette packs. Even the odd piece of furniture. And please don’t get me started on dog poop. It’s not one particular group of people. There are adults, teens and young children, individuals and families alike. I see parents who don’t seem to notice when their charges throw garbage on the ground. Often the adults are chatting or on their cellphones. The city seems to do what it can. There are garbage bins in the park that are emptied regularly. Sure wish, though, that something could be done about all the broken park benches near the high school. Why can’t people make the effort to keep our neighbourhood park clean? What will it take for it to be respected by everyone? Janis Jaffe-White

Business gives older adults equal footing in technology DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com It may seem young people take technology use for granted, but that’s certainly not the case for all of them. A trio of recent and current college students have founded The Gadget Guides, a business based in North York that aims to educate members of an older generation how they, too, can benefit from the technologies that are so much part of young people’s lives. The business is headquartered near Yonge Street and Finch Avenue. The three young partners are cousins Ami Moyal, 20, and Moe Elmaleh, 21, and their friend and former high school mate Corey Freeman, 19. They attended the Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto (CHAT) in Richmond Hill. Freeman and Moyal grew up in North York, but now live in Thornhill, while Elmaleh resides in North York. “A lot of seniors express frustration and are turned off at first,” said Moyal, a recent Seneca College grad who studied online marketing and web development. “As we come in and show them how problems can be simply solved, regardless of their

After witnessing the struggles of older adults in their own families with high-tech devices, Ami Moyal, left, and Corey Freeman (along with Moe Elmaleh) founded ‘The Gadget Guides’ to teach seniors how to use modern technologies such as computers and tablets.
age and other false perceptions, they see this stuff is easy.” The business started in early 2015 after Moyal was inspired by his grandfather, who splits his time between Canada and Israel and communicates with his wife who lives in Israel, using FaceTime and Skype on
iPads. “At that point, we thought why aren’t all seniors using technology?” he said. “In this day and age, people are living longer, people have more relatives that live all over the world. There is definitely a need for communication.” He reached out to Elmaleh, who
studied human resources, and Freeman, who is studying economics at Columbia University. Freeman said he liked the concept. His parents and grandparents use computers, but they have their own struggles that he helps solve. While communication is a big part of what The Gadget Guides teach their clients, technology provides access to much more than that, such as news and history. “There’s more content online, that is readable, than has ever been possible before to people,” Freeman said. “My grandparents read the news every day, but the breadth of news, the fact that you can go to a news site that’s located in a foreign country to give you a different perspective on things, those kinds of things were impossible before.” When the business formed, the trio made cold calls to retirement residences. Now, a few months later, through word of mouth, their reputation has spread and clients are calling them. They teach in class settings, mostly at retirement homes, usually in North York. They do one-on-one lessons and small group sessions. Moyal recalled a moment when he was teaching a class about Street View, a feature of Google Maps that
allows users to view areas of the world as seen from the street. “Two weeks ago, we showed this man from Nova Scotia, not his city, not his town, but his street and the house he grew up in. He was totally blown away. This is actually where he proposed to his late wife. Moments like that, where the class stops and they can see this is something they thought was impossible...It’s an experience of a lifetime,” he said. He said the biggest frustration for clients is their own self doubt. However, he said today’s technology is easy, and it can become part of a person’s daily life, no matter their age. Freeman agreed. He said older adults will be frustrated with the constantly changing and evolving technologies, but those changes generally make things easier. “Technology constantly does evolve,” Freeman said. “But the thing with technology is that it gets easier and easier to learn. I think if we were to teach our clients how to use computers from the 1970s, it would be a lot more difficult than it is to teach them how to use the iPad.”

No auditions required for the Drama School at O’Connor House location >>>from page 1 at The Assembly Hall in Etobicoke, YPT Studio (Nathan Cohen) Theatre downtown and Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts near Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue. The Drama School offers classes for children in grades junior kindergarten to 12. Check individual locations for the grades they serve. The O’Connor House location was chosen to better serve the eastern part of the city, said Karen Gilodo, YPT’s associate artistic director, education. There are no auditions for the Drama School at the O’Connnor House location,
and any child can register, she said, adding alumni include actor-turned-hip-hop artist Drake and actor Kiefer Sutherland. “Students work on improv, movement, text, building selfconfidence, team work,” she said, noting the Drama School expansion was made possible by a recent $3 million donation from The Slaight Family Foundation in honour of Ada Slaight. “We’re not necessarily cultivating Hollywood talent. They should just enjoy expressing themselves.” There is still room in the fall, winter and spring Drama School sessions at O’Connor
House, Gilodo said, adding the other sites are close to full. “Many students do the whole range of (Drama School) programs until age 18,” she said. “Some go on to receive theatre degrees, some go to arts high school, some are working actors.” Now coming up to its 50th anniversary season, YPT has received 44 Dora Mavor Moore Awards, which honors theatre, dance, and opera productions in Toronto, and produces professional theatre for young audiences.

Several bladder cancer walks taking place across Canada >>>from page 1 He’s lucky, he admitted, as the disease and the treatments used to fight it have not had a great physical toll on him, “I’m not going to let it slow me down. I refuse to give in to this thing. It’s just something that’s not going to win. I’m going to fight this. As long as I have a breath, I’m going to live my life the way I want to live it,” Van Horne said. But others are not quite so lucky. For that reason, the St. Clair Avenue and Yonge Street area resident encourages everyone to help a cause that has helped him through his eight-year journey, which continues still. The 2015 Bladder Cancer Aw a re n e s s Wa l k t a k e s place Sunday, Sept. 13 at Sunnybrook Park in North York, near Sunnybrook Hospital. The five-kilometre walk is among a number happening across Canada in September. Last year, the events raised $450,000 for Bladder Cancer Canada. “If the walk raises the awareness for one person or saves one life, it’s worthwhile,” he said. Bladder Cancer Canada estimates 8,300 Canadians will be diagnosed with the disease this year. The organization raises funds to help address day-to-day issues for people with the disease, to raise awareness of the disease and to fund research into diagnosis, treatment and elimination of bladder cancer. Bladder cancer has an 80 per cent recurrence rate, making it the most expensive cancer to treat per patient.

Participants join the 2014 Bladder Cancer Canada Awareness Walk in Toronto. This year’s event takes place at Sunnybrook Park Sunday.
Van Horne had no indication he was sick until that fateful morning eight years ago. Tests at Mount Sinai Hospital revealed he had four major tumours in his bladder and, two weeks after finding out, he had surgery to remove them. BCG vaccine Then treatment began, which includes bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) injection into the bladder. BCG is a vaccine that provides immunity or protection against tuberculosis and is also used to treat bladder
tumors and bladder cancer. He has now completed five cycles (once a week for six weeks each) of the BCG injection treatment, the last of which ended a few weeks ago. While the treatments take a physical toll, Van Horne said he feels fine now. The 5k walk begins at 10:30 a.m. with registration starting at 9:30 a.m. Entry into the park is off Leslie Street, just north of Eglinton Avenue East.

Iconic Toronto City Hall celebrates 50 years DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com
Over the past 50 years, Toronto City Hall has played many roles. It’s been in the background on not one but two Star Trek series; it’s been nuked as a stand-in for the zombieinfested Raccoon City in Resident Evil: Apocalypse; and in its strangest media turn, it was central to the internationally televised tragicomedy of former mayor Rob Ford’s term of office. But to begin with, the iconic structure of two curving towers clasping a council chamber that resembles nothing so much as a 1950s-era flying saucer, had a simpler role: the futuristic and hopeful new seat of government for the old City of Toronto. It was something that Toronto’s civic leaders had meant to do since 1943, but in typical Toronto fashion, they dithered and equivocated for more than a decade until then-mayor Nathan Phillips took the reins and called for an international design competition. It wasn’t until September 1965, that the finished building – designed by Finnish architect Viljo Revell – opened its doors onto the civic square named after Phillips, as the brand
Toronto City Hall officially opened on Sept. 13, 1965. A 50th birthday celebration is set for this Sunday.
new Toronto City Hall. This weekend, that new city hall celebrates its 50th birthday, and it’s doing it in style. Literally. Mayor John Tory, who moved office into the building less than a year ago, remains struck by city hall’s iconic style. “From the standpoint of external recognition, it is one of our most iconic buildings,” he said. “Internally
– I think while there are johnny-comelatelies like Yonge-Dundas Square, Mel Lastman Square – it’s the great public space.” The building is so iconic that it’s been a staple not just in movies and television, souvenirs and logos, but in spite of its obvious challenges, it alone all of the civic centres from the former Metropolitan Toronto municipalities was the obvious and
only seat of government for the newly amalgamated City of Toronto. In the late 1990s, that meant a lot of careful work on a building that is also a heritage structure. Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moeser was put in charge of managing the $4.8-million renovation that turned the council chambers from a space for 15 city councillors and a few city staff to one that would accommodate a council that was initially 57 members strong. “That was one of the challenges – how do we design the council chamber and keep the heritage and you know, make it something that we can all be proud of,” recalled Moeser. “I spent a lot of time with it, with the architects and so forth. The devil was in the details.” The building had and still has its quirks that had to be dealt with. The council chambers were famously accessed only by two glacially slow hydraulic elevators, and exits to the roof. Briefly, there had been plans to remove the large wall between the public chambers and the members’ lounge, but Moeser confirmed the apparently free-standing wall served as a counterbalance to prevent the entire saucer from tipping
off the single pillar that supports it. In the end, the council chamber maintained its old-school charm – remembered well by councillors like Parkdale-High Park’s Gord Perks, who began his political life as an activist. “I have so many memories of being here. I can remember being 22 years old and holding an activist thing up in the council chamber. I used to make deputations up there,” he said. “I can remember Citizens for Local Democracy holding meetings up there. Launching Kathleen Wynne’s political career.” Tory said city hall should be an inspiration to city builders in the future. “It’s a symbol of something we should do more of which is do things that are bold,” he said. “Although I don’t think it’s bold to have an architectural competition, and maybe we should do more of that. It’s 50 years of age, it looks very striking and contemporary, which is an interesting commentary on what you get when you have these competitions.”

After summer break, community council Taxi alliance says proposed regulations will kill business receives 10 development applications In its first day back from summer break, North York Community Council received 10 preliminary reports for projects developers hoping to construct in the north end of Toronto. Such reports provide preliminary information on proposed construction project, which then require a community consultation meeting and public meeting before the city gives final approval for the project to proceed. Changes to the proposals often occur between the preliminary and final reports. The preliminary reports appeared at community council Sept. 8. The 10 proposed projects would consist of the following, if eventually approved: • 111 Wenderly Dr. – The proposal consists of six four-storey townhouse units in two rows of three at Marlee Avenue and Wenderly Drive. Each unit would have a rooftop patio and there would be one shared garage. • 713-723 Lawrence Ave. W. – This proposal would see the construction of 93 three-storey townhouse units in two rows, with one level of underground parking with a total of 97 spaces and bicycle parking
for 40 bikes. The site is just west of Lawrence West subway station. • 2795-2799 and 2801 Bathurst St. – The proposed project would include a 10-storey mixed-use residential building fronting Bathurst Street at Glencairn Avenue and two rows of four-storey townhouses. • 53-63 Sheppard Ave. W. and 62-68 Bogert Ave. – This project would construct a 14-storey residential building with ground-floor commercial uses and four-storey townhouses for a total of 192 units along Sheppard Avenue, just west of Yonge Street. • 3057-3067 Bayview Ave. and 1 Burleigh Heights Dr. – This would construct 22 three-storey townhouses fronting Bayview Avenue, at McKee Avenue, with a single-level underground parking garage. • 49-51 Lawrence Ave. E. and 84 Weybourne Cres. – This proposal seeks to construct a four-storey apartment building complex that would consist of 22 residential units and a shared parking garage, just east of Yonge Street. • 100 Ranleigh Ave. – This proposal would see the construction of a four-storey, 43-unit apartment building at Ranleigh Avenue,
between Yonge Street and Mt. Pleasant Road. • 3 and 5 Southvale Dr. – This proposal seeks to build an eight-storey residential building with 98 apartments, including 97 underground parking spaces at Southvale Drive and Millwood Road. • 939 Eglinton Ave. E. – This proposal would construct 1,500 residential units, 2,950 square metres of retail space, 9,690 square metres of office space, 1,639 parking spaces in a four-level underground garage, a public park and a new public road just east of Laird Drive. The project would include two development parcels. The north parcel would consist of two residential towers of 19 and 24 storeys connected by an eight-storey mixed-use building, fronting onto Eglinton Avenue. The south parcel would consist of two residential buildings of 31 and 34 storeys connected by an eightstorey mixed use building to the north of the proposed new road. • 1648-1682 Victoria Park Ave. – The application seeks to build 179 apartments in a complex of four blocks of stacked back-to-back five-storey townhouses, north of Eglinton Avenue.
DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com A spokesperson for Toronto’s taxi industry said proposed new regulations to eventually regulate Uber Canada’s ride-sharing app will kill traditional regulated cabs. “If the report is adopted as is, the taxi industry will be dead,” said Sam Moini, spokesperson for the Toronto Taxi Alliance. “Creating a new license gives an outrageous advantage to the Uber taxis... The report will kill 10,000 full-time drivers and replace them with part-time Uber X drivers. They will be competing for crumbs rather than a piece of the pie.” The Taxi Alliance’s position came as the city’s Ground Transportation Review report was released, in advance of the Sept. 16 meeting of the city’s Licensing and Standards Committee. The report is intended by city staff to close a loophole that allowed Uber to continue to offer variably-priced rides to consumers through a smartphone app. Under the plan, Uber will be forced to register as a taxi brokerage – and eventually be able to operate vehicles in a new category to be
called a “Transportation Network Company.” That will permit vehicles for hire to take rides, but they will have to have adequate insurance, criminal background screening, driver record screening and vehicle inspections. Uber Canada issued a statement welcoming the report. “It’s great to see the thoughtful leadership City staff have shown in crafting this report, which has a thorough understanding of how ridesharing, consumer choice and smart regulations can benefit Torontonians,” said Uber spokesperson Xavier Van Chau in a statement. Mayor John Tory supports the report and said the incursion of Uber into the city’s ground transportation marketplace is an inevitable disruption. “One of the purposes of this regulatory reform and modernization is to create a more realistic and viable set of rules to help the taxi industry remain viable,” he said. “It is not the government’s role to regulate Uber out of existence or to ban it. At the same time, Uber cannot operate as if this is the wild west. There have to be regulations in place.”
