St. Matthew church marks 50th anniversary Cu r re n t a n d re t u r n i n g parishioners of North York’s St. Matthew the Apostle Anglican Church will gather this month to celebrate the church’s 50th anniversary of service in the community. St. Matthew, at 80 George Henry Blvd., southwest of Sheppard Avenue and Don Mills Road, began as a custom-built portable church on a two-acre lot in the new Henry Farm neighbourhood. It has since grown into buildings that now house s e r v i c e s o f w o r s h i p, a Montessori school and community events. The anniversary celebrations will kick off Saturday, Sept. 20 with a wine and cheese gala. A limited number of tickets are still
available but are going fast. There will also be displays of memorabilia from the church archives, historic picture boards of church happenings over the past 50 years, and the unveiling of a book of St. Matthew’s history and parishioners’ memories, organizers said. The event will wrap up with a silent auction, with w a t e rc o l o u r p a i n t i n g s donated by North York artist Wilf McOstrich. Then, on Sunday, Sept. 21, Archbishop Colin Johnson will celebrate the Feast of St. Matthew, the church’s patron saint. Aga Khan Museum officially open
“
This is a vision of Islam in which all Canadians can be proud of.
– Prime Minister Stephen Harper
CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Prime Minister Stephen Harper attended the inauguration of the Ismaili Centre and Aga Khan Museum on Friday, officially opening the $300 million museum complex. “We celebrate today, that ambitious promise is now a splendid reality,” said Harper, standing alongside His Highness the Aga Khan again as he did four years ago during the foundational ceremony. Harper expressed his gratitude to the Aga Khan for tirelessly promoting the ideals of Islam culture and civilization, social diversity, and helping demystify Islam to the rest of the world. “This is a vision of Islam in which all Canadians can be proud of,” said Harper at the inaugural event with such notable dignitaries in attendance including former Governor General Adrienne

Clarkson. The Aga Khan Museum and Ismaili Centre, which is located on 6.8 hectares of
land at 77 Wynford Dr. near Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue, will be opened to the public starting today.
The museum’s permanent collection features more than 1,000 objects that include portraits, textiles, manuscripts, and musical instruments, which showcase Islamic art, culture and history. The Aga Khan returned the compliments, acknowledging the Canadian government, donors, architects, designers and the local neighbourhood for their support. “Here we are today, a story over 18 years has been one of deeply shared purpose,” said the Aga Khan, noting the planning of the complex began nearly two decades ago. The Ismaili Centre in Toronto joins a network of other centres located around the world including London, Lisbon, Dubai, Dushanbe and Vancouver. The Aga Khan added that he hoped the park space connecting the Ismaili Centre and the Aga Khan Museum will be used by people of all ages and backgrounds for relaxation and contemplation. “We are a community that welcomes the smile,” he said.

Grant helps in preservation of Jewish artifacts LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Holding her eight-monthold son on her lap, Dara Solomon said a federal grant will help the Jewish community preserve its history for future generations. “It is such an exciting opportunity. Bathurst St. between Finch and Sheppard avenues. Last Thursday. York Centre MP Mark Adler was at the archives to announce a $195,100 grant. The funding will go toward adding a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system and compact shelving in the vault, and renovating the area where researchers and others can study the archives’ artifacts. The oldest item in the archives is an 1838 early sur-
veying compass created by one of the first Jews to settle in Toronto. Most of the archives’ records date from the early 1900s up until today. “It’s all original, it’s all unique. You won’t find this material anywhere else,” archivist Donna BernardoCeriz said. While all the records and artifacts are important, the archives houses a few “gems” such as the Rotenberg ledger, which is a registry of people who

The HVAC will help preserve the archives’s collection of 60,000 photos and other paper records such as architectural blueprints and written correspondence. “They (blueprints) are crumbling because many of them are on onion paper, which is very thin tissue paper, so those are in desperate need of preservation in a climate-controlled environment,” Solomon said.

Dropping in on minor hockey tryouts I caught some minor hockey tryouts around town on the weekend. Here are assorted sights and sounds from rinkside at Dick Duff Arena. Coach: “Alright troops, listen up. For those of you suffering from the delusion that you’ve got a lock on a roster spot, I have a rude awakening for you: every position is up for grabs. It doesn’t matter what you did last season. I don’t care what fancy shmancy hockey school you went to over the summer. Under my watch everybody starts with a clean slate at camp. You want to qualify to play for this club, you have to do it the old fashioned way – you’ll have to earn it. Nobody, and I mean nobody, has this team made. Ya got that?” Jason: “You tell ’em, Dad.” Coach: “Hughie, I know you’re the smallest guy out here, but it’s not how big you are, it’s what you’ve got here on the left side of your
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY chest, under your hockey sweater I’m interested in. You know what I’m pointing at, don’t you?” Hughie: “Sure do, coach. My ‘Batman Rules’ in bold, black letters right underneath my shoulder. And I gotta tell you, it’s a load off my mind that you feel the same way as I do about it. I wasn’t sure what the team policy was on tattoos.” Coach: “No, no, no. For the zillionth time, no. That’s it. I give up. Alright, girls. Have it your way, girls. Since you insist on behaving like girls, then you leave me with no alternative but to treat you like girls. So gir......” Tiffany: “Excuse me, coach, but if it it’s all the same to you, we prefer to be referred to as women.” Coach: “Up and down son, up and down. That’s all you’ve got to remember
about this position. It’s not rocket science.” Assistant coach: “Well put, Hank. I love the way you simplify things to teach these kids how to play the wing.” Coach: “What wing? He’s not even on the tryout roster. He’s the arena owner’s kid. I was just reminding him how to work the elevators to the luxury boxes.” Assistant coach: “I walked into another one. Small wonder I’m the assistant.” Coach: “Alright kids, here’s the last drill. You go from the red line, to the blue line, back to the red line, to the blue line, red line, back to the other red line, blue line, red line, blue line, red line, circle the net clockwise, round both face-off circles counter clockwise, back to the other red line, blue line, red line, blue line, red line, back to the other red line, blue line, red line, blue line, red line, circle the net counter-clockwise, round both face-off circles clockwise.
Then repeat it all three times and sprint to the centre ice face-off circle. On your mark, get set ... Yes, what is it Ralph?” Ralph: “Sorry for interrupting, coach. You had a real sweet rhythm going on. But I have to ask: What was that second one again?” Coach: “Nice job, kids. That was a fantastic effort from all of you today. I couldn’t be happier. You’ve all earned a break. We’ll rest for a bit and then finish up with a shootout. While we’re all catching our breath, just out of curiosity, what do you think about our league’s exciting new slogan this year: ‘Hockey: The Fastest Game On Ice.’ Not bad, eh?” Greg: “I hate to break it to you coach, but the only other game on ice is curling.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. Brotherly love fuels the search for live liver donor LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com
N
Photo/CHAIM SCHVARCZ
Sar Levy suffers from multiple disabilities that have caused him to develop cirrhosis of the liver, necessitating a transplant. Gavriel Levy, Sar’s brother, and his family have mounted a campaign to find a living donor for the procedure.
“
He’s hanging in, that’s the best way to phrase it. He’s a fighter. We’ve had some real health scares. By some miracle, his will, his drive, he continues to find a way. – Gavriel Levy
orth York twins Gavriel and Sar Levy came into the world together, their lives dramatically different but always entwined. Born 12 weeks prematurely and each weighing about two pounds of butter, Gavriel soon thrived while Sar has struggled with severe health problems including cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, a rare form of meningitis, diabetes, massive seizures and burst veins in his esophagus. Through it all, Gavriel has been by his brother’s side. So, when Sar was admitted to hospital in February with advancing liver damage brought on by cystic fibrosis, Gavriel eagerly offered to donate part of his liver to his brother. Unlike other organs, a severed liver in both the donor and the recipient grows back to normal size. Unfortunately, Gavriel was ruled out as a donor because he wasn’t an anatomical match, while their parents were disqualified for health reasons. Now, Gavriel and his parents are reaching out to the community to find a live liver donor for Sar, who is also on Ontario’s waiting list for a liver from a deceased donor. “In the past five years, his condition has worsened,” said Gavriel, who along with Sar is 27 years old. “Now, we’re at the point, I don’t want to say any day, but any time soon, he could be in liver failure. The doctors say within a week (of that happening), he could perish.”
Twin seeks a ‘special person’ to help save the life of his brother, whose liver has been damaged by cystic fibrosis Because there isn’t any other family who can donate, their only hope is finding a live donor from the community, said Gavriel, who lives with Sar and their parents in the area of Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue. “We’re hoping some special person out there will come forward and save my brother’s life,” he said. “He’s hanging in, that’s the best way to phrase it. He’s a fighter. We’ve had some real health scares. By some miracle, his will, his drive, he continues to find a way.” Although Sar can’s speak (he uses a communication board and pictures) and he can’t walk (he had two operations as a child that allowed him to walk but he lost the ability as he grew) he has so much to live for, Gavriel said. Sar is a fighter who is active and sociable. He wakes up happy every morning. He loves watching
television shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy because he enjoys seeing people’s happiness when they win. Before he was admitted to hospital, he was thrilled to attend a day program for adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. “He is a past alumni of Zareinu Educational Centre and also attended Park Lane (Public) School where he was the recipient of the principal’s award for student leadership,” Gavriel said. Sar has attended a summer camp in Catskills N.Y. for the past 12 years and is an enthusiastic participant in events run by Yachad Canada, an organization that envelopes people with disabilities into the Jewish community. He loves horseback riding and attended a program through the Community Association for Riding for the Disabled (CARD) for eight years. He adores music, swimming, outdoor activities and “is a keen lover of food,” Gavriel said. “He really loves life and little things. You just give him family and food and all that and he is happy.” Gavriel said it hurts him terribly to see Sar so ill, adding the brothers go through his health struggles together as a team. “I’m very appreciative of my health and I try to give him everything I have so we’re doing it together. I look at us like a package,” he said. “Hopefully, somebody touched by our story will want to save Sar’s life.” For more information or if you are interested in donating part of your liver, visit www.facebook.com/giftoflifeforsar or contact the family by email at giftoflifeforsar@aol.com or by phone at 647-427-7043.

Normally low-key race turns nasty LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com Ward 23 Willowdale has traditionally been home to sleepy municipal election campaigns, routinely absent from lists of interesting races to watch. This time around, however, the campaign has turned nasty, with incumbent Councillor John Filion and rival candidate David Mousavi accusing each other of dirty politics. They are using words like “disgusting smear tactics,” “ugly,” “profoundly offensive,” “unethical” and “contemptible” to describe the others’ actions. Filion, a long-time councillor who was first elected to public office as a school trustee in 1984, said he has never been part of such a negative campaign. “I’ve never seen it before,” said Filion, who captured twothirds of the votes in a low-key 2010 campaign. “It’s incredibly offensive to me. Representing this area has been my life’s work, literally my life’s work. To have somebody say things, to put out campaign literature...that attacks my reputation, it’s disgusting, it’s reprehensible, it’s everything I despise in politics. It’s something I’ve never seen in Ward 23.” Filion said a campaign is the time for a debate about policies and ideas, not personal attacks. He said he can only hope voters look at his long record of public service rather than the falsehoods being used against him. Mousavi said he had his sights on having an intelligent conversation during the campaign. “I think Mr. Filion knows he has a real challenger this time and he probably wants to do whatever he can to frame me in a narrative to his favour to ensure he wins. It’s shocking to me.” Mousavi said he is disheartened by what has happened
during the campaign. “I know I’m running an above-board campaign. I’m disappointed the councillor is trying to frame me as the villain he needs.” Mousavi, a lawyer, said he has several concerns about Filion. For example, on Sept. 2, he emailed a complaint to the city’s building inspections department alleging construction was taking place at Filion’s Yonge Street campaign office without a building permit, an issue he raised in a letter to Filion two days later. “You are obviously aware that significant construction and alterations have been taking place feverishly to meet your required usage date of Sept. 6 for your campaign launch,” Mousavi said in his letter to Filion. The campaign took a decidedly negative turn over Filion’s campaign kickoff Sept. 6, with Mousavi accusing Filion of using “insensitive” and “racialized” language to describe his opposition and Filion accusing Mousavi’s team of paying protestors to picket his launch. When a protestor carrying a sign reading “John is a liar” was asked why she thought that, the woman said she didn’t know, she was just there for the money, Filion said. When the protest was over, the protestors put their signs in a truck, which went to Mousavi’s campaign office, he added. Mousavi said he doesn’t know
who those protestors were. In a press release accusing Filion of reaching a new low, Mousavi links to 25-second clip of a longer seven-and-a-halfminute YouTube video featuring Filion addressing supporters at his campaign kickoff. In it, Filion talks about how nasty the campaign is becoming and repeats a campaign worker’s comment referring to his opposition as an “axis of evil.” The term was used by former U.S. president George W. Bush during a 2002 State of the Union address to refer to Iran, Iraq and North Korea. Because Mousavi is of Iranian background and another cawndidate, Kun-Won Park, is of Korean heritage, Mousavi called Filion’s language inappropriate, although he stressed he did not accuse Filion of racism and doesn’t think he’s racist. “I think the comment was racialized. There’s a racial element to it. You’re referring to someone’s ancestry in a racial way,” Mousavi said. “It’s an insensitive comment.” Mousavi is upset Filion is falsely saying that Mousavi accused him of racism. When asked if it wasn’t more likely that Filion used the term to describe the negativity of the campaign rather than to impugn any culture, Mousavi said Filion could have used different words. “If he meant to say it was nasty, he could say it was nasty. For him to say it’s the axis of evil, there would have to be some thought to who his opponents are...It’s very clear it describes tyrannical regimes,” he said. “It’s unfortunate he used it. I don’t think Mr. Filion is racist... He used racialized comments that were insensitive.” In turn, Filion said in a letter
to Niaz Salimi, president of the Iranian Canadian Arts Council, that his comment was not targetted at any cultural group. “A speaker before me used the term in an off-hand way to refer to a collection of opponents who have attacked my character and reputation. He referred specifically to land speculators and Ford Nation – both of whom support one of my opponents, David Mousavi,” he wrote. “I referred to the previous speaker’s comments, repeating the term in the same context he had used it. Words such as “coalition” or “group” could just as easily have been used to describe the collection of forces attempting to undermine me in the current political campaign for councillor.” After three decades of public service, Filion said he’s offended that someone would “deliberately and falsely” seek to damage his reputation for political gain. “In my (campaign launch) speech, I predicted more of such behaviour. David Mousavi’s accusations have proved me right. These accusations have no basis and no purpose other than to attempt to damage my reputation in the Iranian community,” he said in his letter. Meanwhile, Mousavi’s position on the broader municipal election stage has also become a sore point, with Filion saying his opponent has the backing of Ford Nation. But Mousavi said he liked mayoral candidate David Soknacki before he dropped out of the race and now is now supporting John Tory (Filion endorsed Tory last month). Mousavi suggested Filion is trying to demonize him by linking him to the Ford campaign.

Shawn Lall makes professional stage debut in ‘Richard III’ JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com
said. “I think we’ve managed to produce something very special.” Involved in theatre, acting, singing and dancing for as long as he can remember, Lall said he didn’t consider pursuing a career in performance arts until his last year of high school when his drama teacher suggested he check out the youth mentorship program at Soulpepper Theatre Co. in the Distillery Historic District.
S
hawn Lall is excited to be starring in his professional stage debut in Kadozuke Kollektif’s Richard III: the Pleasures of Violence. “This is actually the first theatrical production I’ve been involved with since graduating from Humber (College) and it’s really exciting,” said Lall, a member of the experimental theatre company, which has done an innovative reimagination of Shakespeare’s classic political play. dual roles In Richard III: The Pleasures of Violence, Lall plays the role of two main characters: Lord Hastings as well as The Duchess of York. Lall, who grew up in North York but has called the Carlaw Avenue and Queen Street area home for about a year, describes Lord Hastings, Richard III’s chamberlain of the court, as a “conflicted sort of character” who is caught in a tough place when he must question his friend’s unethical choices as The King. challenging role as the Duchess of York, Richard III’s mother. “Her character is very plagued by a lot of guilt regarding Richard, the way he’s acting and the things he’s planning to do, and the chaos he’s unleashing on the kingdom,” said Lall, who stars in the threehour production alongside his friends/classmates Tyler Winn and David Fish. The Leslieville-based actor said he’s also excited to work with his former college instructor, Tatiana Jennings, the show’s artistic director. “It’s a dream come true to work together so close after graduation,” Lall
“It was really excited to get an immersion in performance arts,” Lall said of the eye-opening experience, which led him to sign up for Humber College’s Theatre Performance and Acting for Film and Television programs in the fall of 2010. Lall’s next endeavour is a Shakespearean stage adaptation of Reservoir Dogs, which is set to debut late next year.

and Katherine Dennis that brings together artists through the creation of installations at historic houses and museums in Toronto. The installation opens at Gibson House Museum in North York Sept. 21 and runs until Nov. 9. The artists who will produce site specific projects that respond to the history of Gibson House are Robert Hengeveld, Matt Macintosh, Sara Angelucci, Eleanor King, and the Department of Unusual Certainties. This installation will include artist-led tours of the museum, at 5172 Yonge St. north of Sheppard Avenue, and walking tours in the neighbourhood. Built in 1851, Gibson House was the home of Scottish immigrant David Gibson and his family. He was a land surveyor who helped map early Toronto. Contact: gibsonhouse@ toronto.ca or 416-395-7432.

Politics and transit don’t mix: board of trade RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A report from the Toronto Region Board of Trade
(TRBOT) is calling for a better decision-making structure to prevent the type of political interference that has derailed past tran-
sit plans. The board’s latest discussion paper strongly recommends reforming governance structures for

HUDSON’S BAY AT YORKDALE MALL GIVES BACK On September 11, Hudson’s Bay Yorkdale hosted the Giving Day, where customers saved on purchases in store while benefiting local charities in the Toronto area. The charities sold $5 tickets to their donors and supports in hopes to raise funds and awareness. Ticket proceeds sold in store, were donated to Look Good Feel Better,to help empower women and encourage them to manage the effects cancer and its treatment have on their appearance and moral. Customers were treated to hors d’oeuvres, music, beauty makeovers, product demonstrations and giveaways.
transit agencies such as Metrolinx so they are not vulnerable to a change in political whims. It proposes four possible models to integrate transit decision-making, which have been used successfully in other jurisdictions. What’s more, with a newly elected Liberal provincial government in place with a majority mandate, as well as funding commitment in place to provide $15 billion over 10 years to transit improvements in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), board CEO Carol Wilding said there’s great opportunity now to reform the existing governance structure. “The time is now and there’s too much at stake, $15 billion,” said Wilding following the release of the report Sept. 10 at the TRBOT’s downtown office. “Others have done it, we can do it. We’re not looking to break brand new ground

here.” The report recommends four broad options for future regional transit governance: w Creating a transit alliance offering integrated service and operating under a unified brand. w Uploading all transit operations to the province. w Creating a special body managed by GTHA municipalities to share planning and policy decisions. w Creating two special bodies at the municipal level to separate planning and operational decisions. Wilding said looking at international examples could help the region avoid the type of political interference seen during last year’s Scarbrough subway debate which she described as the “poster child” for how not to build transit. “If you look at the ways they’ve done it, whether in London, Manchester, Portland, there are details in
the report which show how the basic structure works and how it allows political input but ensures the right decisions are made on the right basis,” she said. “And they stick. They don’t flip flop like with Scarborough.” Wilding, who is leaving the board of trade, said all options for reform should be considered, including uploading the TTC to the province or allowing Metrolinx to have the final say on transit building. And with a stable provincial government in place, she suggested all of the options listed in the report can implemented in less than a year. “When you are in an environment where there is a provincial majority government, I’d suggest you could move fairly efficiently,” she said.

Tory skips out on Transit’ debate w‘Big Mayoral front runner John Tory withdrew from a transit debate this week with Olivia Chow just a few hours before it was scheduled to begin. The event still took place on Monday, but with only Chow taking part. Earlier in the day, Tory’s campaign team released a media statement confirming he would not attend the Big Transit Mayoral Debate, co-organized by the advocacy group TTCriders and the Ryerson University Student Union. Tory blamed “extraordinary demands on his time along with Doug Ford’s entry into the mayoral race for his withdrawal from Monday’s debate as well as other events planned for this week. Rob Ford and David Soknacki had also agreed to attend before both withdrew from the mayoral race. Chow used the opportunity to hold a solo Q and A on her transit plans – and continually criticize the absent Tory in the process. About 150 people attended the event, which was held at Ryerson.

Tory promises ‘achievable, measurable’ plan for separated bike lanes DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com John Tory will be releasing a bike plan that will include bike infrastructure at transit stations and an “achievable, measurable plan to build separated bike lanes. “It will focus first of all on maintaining and providing a line item to make sure that cycle lanes are properly maintained, said Tory in front of reporters Tuesday morning. “Second will be to have greater bicycle infrastructure at transit stations including the Smart Track Stations... thirdly, I will make a reasonable, achievable, measurable commitment to have more separated bike lanes and a network of real separated bike lanes, rather than these promises people make to build hundreds of kilometres of bike lanes. Tory made the comments standing between construction fences that are blocking off much of Wellesley Street between Yonge Street

and Queen’s Park Circle. He called the news conference to re-iterate promises he had made earlier in the campaign, to personally oversee a committee that would work to mitigate inconvenience from road work. Tory had no new policies to announce at the event, but when asked he said he would be unveiling the details of his bike strategy in the coming days or weeks.
Tory said he had recently ridden downtown in the company of members of the advocacy group Cycle Toronto – for the first time in his life. He decried the lack of progress on making separated bike lanes and said he would make it a priority to do so. He said he would also make sure that maintaining the existing network of bike lanes would be a line item in the budget.

Stalled mayoral race gives voters time to ponder the big questions T
he Ford family’s personal and political kerfuffle last week sent some serious shockwaves into the early part of this week of the mayoral campaign – serious enough to send things into a bona fide stall. On Monday and Tuesday, three of four mayoral debates died on the vine. Olivia Chow got out on Tuesday morning to host a news conference, rescheduled from last week, to let voters know that four west-end progressive councillors were behind her mayoral bid. John Tory, the candidate responsible for
putting the kibosh on those three debates, held a news conference an hour later that was somehow less surprising: to remind voters that he intended to keep promises related to gridlock that he’d made during the summer. Up until the print deadline for this column Tuesday afternoon, newly minted mayoral candidate Doug Ford was spending his time at the bedside of newly minted Ward 2 council candidate Rob Ford – so not saying much of anything. The sound of shuffling feet was just about deafening.
Calling All Newlyweds!
david nickle the city Quiet times aren’t always a bad thing. In this one, it might just be useful to sit a spell, and in the absence of blaring pitches of mayoral agendas – just think a bit about where we are, where we’ve been, and where we want to go. Until last week, Toronto was in what ex-mayoral candidate David Soknacki correctly pegged as a referendum on Mayor Rob Ford. For four years, Ford put many Torontonians through a meat grinder of embarrassment, insult, and privation. His activities somehow provided some measure of comfort to others. We lined up on either side of that very sharp line Ford drew: with Ford More Years on one side, and
really everything else on the other. When Doug Ford gets going, he’ll be presenting Mayor Ford’s agenda without the drug use – and also without his little brother’s singular level of charisma that would make him a serious threat. Which is to say: here on in, this election might finally just be about the ideas Well, not entirely the ideas: we’re all a little partisan, some casting ballots for New Democrats and certain Liberals, others voting for certain other Liberals and Conservatives. Some of us feel strongly enough about that to pick a mayor now. But for the rest of us: what an unexpected opportunity to pick not so much the person of the mayor, but the kind of city we want. In this quiet time we
might ask: do we want to pay more taxes to build a subway in Scarborough and more stations on an electrified GO line? Would we rather send that billion-dollar property tax levy to build a downtown relief line, and skim more tax revenue from the land transfer tax to build a downtown relief subway line and buy more buses? Do we want to contract out garbage collection in the east end or not? What about bike lanes? It’s much easier to think about these questions when we’re not also deciding how we feel about all the other ugly matters that have consumed us until now. Clarity is a rare and wonderful thing. Savour it while it lasts.
