Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven. The LORD will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest. (Ps. 85:11-12)
Fall is deďŹ nitely a me to yield Minnekirken’s harvest. This fall the Minnekirken family will harvest‌ x New church enthusiasm of the children that the VBS team has cul vated through its me and commitment to bringing new young faces into the church. x New visitors (and maybe new friends?) that Open House Chicago and the Logan Square House Walk will bring into the church. x Money! From the me, eort and dedica on of the Taste of Norway team. x A cornucopia of memories for everyone who has a ended the 17th of May celebra on, Easter service, Bible study or other special events. x An abundance of apprecia on for the coee servers, the Sunday readers, the church board and everyone else who pitches in to keep Minnekirken vibrant and alive! x Great Joy that we receive every Sunday through Pastor David’s inspiring sermons and Dr. Yeeseon Kwon’s amazing musical rendi ons. x
A sense of hope for the future of Minnekirken, due its dedicated supporters. Please join us this fall (see page 12) for a list of events so we can share our harvest with you!

0LQQHNLUNHQ 0HPRULHV We asked some of our members and friends what their favorite Minnekirken memory was. We hope you’ll enjoy their answers. And if you’d like to share your favorite memory, please send them to >ĞĂŶĚƌĂ ĨŽƌ ƚŚĞ <ŽŶƚĂŬƚ. When I returned from Vietnam as a Marine Captain I was met with anger and name calling by my fellow Americans that stunned and disappointed me .What had happened to my Country? It had hated the War and the the War-riors not realizing that we believed we were doing what our county had asked I came to Minnekirken and sat quietly and mostly unobserved in the balcony to come back to a more fondly remembered time and to get my emotional bearings. As I now hear our Military receive “Thanks for your Service “ with regularity I realize that our country feels sorry for the way it treated those of us who served in Vietnam. There are so many special memories it would fill a book. I was baptized and confirmed there, married there, both of my babies were baptized there. Most major events of my adult life were there! So it will always be a special place. It was my Chicago home and family for almost 20 years. I remember the first time I walked into Minnekirken as a shy college student. Little could I know then that so much of my life would be lived right there! Ͷ/ŶŐƌŝĚ ƐŬŝŵ ZŽƐƐ

With the warm days of mid-summer upon us in Chicago, why should we be talking about the Taste of Norway on November 17th? It’s because I have some exci ng news to share about this important cultural event and fundraising opportunity for Minnekirken. My wife’s mother used to own a Scandinavian clothing/gi /yarn shop called The Troll’s Cove in Waupaca, Wisconsin. A few years ago, a er twelve years in business, she decided to close the store. The yarn inventory was liquidated, but there are s ll many gi and clothing items in storage. I have made arrangements with her to donate this remaining inventory to the ΗTaste of NorwayΗ sale. This donation will add to the wonderful offerings of baked goods, crafts, and clothing that celebrate the Norwegian culture and bring people to Minnekirken for the holiday season. Below is a sneak preview of some items that will be available for purchase, including les and hand-carved trolls. I look forward to seeing you there! Takk, Ma Nygaard
Sharing God’s Gi By Lynn Sove Maxson
We were so blessed to have such a lovely site for the 2018 Illinois Norsk Rosemaling show in the Good Templar Park Community House. The weather was perfect. The Good Templar Park people love having us and are so suppor ve and helpful. It is nice to be across the creek from the Viking Ship. They sent people to us and we sent people to them. One big happy family. There were co age tours and Swedish Baked goods in another cabin. .We even were lucky to have Hanna the young woodcarver who shared her fine woodcarving and kolrosing art and helped with the show. The setup was like Telemark rosemaling. Everything grows out from the root and circles around the lovely room. The educa on and book center was popular as well as the raffle and Ooty’s., Ornaments Of The Year,. Demonstrators drew many interested people and ques ons. Visitors were in a con nuous stream on both days. From babes in arms to grandparents with children. Some came from out of state and many were repeat visitors. We are given a gi and God said we should share it. Plant seeds in the young. Showing the children the nature outside the windows with light and shadows and then producing this with color and brushes, fascinated them. Many people young and old asked about classes and pracce strokes. A man from a woodworking group wanted to know how we painted their work. The camaraderie, sharing and selling made it a super show. Sharing your roots and art is very rewarding. It was fun watching people hugging pieces and telling who they are buying them for or where they will go in their homes. Mark your calendar for the Jul Market on Nov. 10 and Nov. 11 in Good Templar Park . Also, don’t miss out next June.show at Swedish Days in Geneva, IL Spread the word!.

Introducing...Ma Nygaard New Minnekirken Treasurer On June 3rd, I had the privilege of a ending my first Minnekirken Church Council mee ng as the new Treasurer. I am honored to be able to help the church in this role, and I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I was born in Norway, Michigan, but I spent most of my childhood in Amery, a small town in northwest Wisconsin (population 2,000). My father was a Lutheran pastor, and our family was very involved in the church. I often marvel at how much Minnekirken reminds me so much of my small, hometown church. My father’s grandparents emigrated from Norway. At Christmas time, my grandmother used to make lefse, krumkake, and rice pudding (we were fortunate to be spared from lutefisk). I moved to Chicago to attend college in 1987. I have lived here ever since, except for a couple of years while I worked in Florida. In 1994, I graduated from college with an MBA, subsequently making my career as an equity options trader. In my spare time, I served as Treasurer of my college fraternity’s alumni association for nearly 20 years. My spiritual, professional, and associational experiences provide a solid foundation for my new role at Minnekirken; I feel comfortable taking this position, and confident I can direct the church’s finances. My wife Erika and I moved from downtown Chicago to the Ravenswood neighborhood in 2016, and we have been attending Minnekirken ever since. We became members of the church in January this year, and we have enjoyed our time with all of the wonderful people in this congregation. I’m looking forward to working with the board to ensure that our church is a financially stable worship home for many years to come. I’d like to thank the Pastor and the Church Council for their help and support. Please email me if I can answer any questions or be of assistance in any way.

Oleanna! The Song Wri en by Ditmar Meidell, a Norwegian newspaper editor, in 1853— a song with many verses, popular in both Norway and America, mocking tales of how wonderful life would be for Norwegians who emigrated to Ole Bull’s American colony in Pennsylvania. (The se lement failed because the land was not legally owned, among other issues.) I’m off to Oleana, I’m turning from my doorway, No chains for me, I’ll say good-bye to slavery in Norway. Ole—Ole—Ole—oh! Oleana! Ole—Ole—Ole—oh! Oleana! They give you land for nothing in jolly Oleana, And grain comes leaping from the ground in floods of golden manna. The grain it does the threshing, it pours into the sack, Sir, And so you take a quiet nap a-stretching on your back, Sir. The salmon they are playing, and leaping in the brook, Sir, They hop into your ke le, put the cover on, and cook, Sir. The cows are most obliging, their milk they put in pails, Sir, They make your cheese and bu er with a skill that never fails, Sir. And li le roasted piggies, with manners quite demure, Sir, They ask you, “Will you have some ham?” And then you say, “Why sure, Sir.” And ale as strong and sweet as the best you’ve ever tasted, It’s running in the foamy creek, where most of it is wasted. And all night long the sun shines, it always keeps a-glowing, It gives you eyes just like a cat’s, to see where you are going. And so we play the fiddle, and all of us are glad, Sir, We dance a merry polka, boys, and that is not so bad, Sir. I’m off to Oleana, to lead a life of pleasure, A beggar here, a count out there, with riches in full measure.
“They mark our passage as a race of men. Earth will not see such ships as those again.”
I’m coming, Oleana, I’ve le my na ve doorway, I’ve made my choice, I’ve said good-bye to slavery in Norway. Ole—Ole—Ole—oh, Oleana! Ole—Ole—Ole—oh, Oleana!

Benedic on Prayer from The Bible
Ar cle by Geilens, Cleveland, Diesen-Dahl
At the end of our Minnekirken Sunday services, the Pastor recites a blessing called the Benedic on Prayer. Benedic on literally means “speak well of, giving rise to the concept of “bless. In The Book of Numbers in the Old Testament, God told Moses to make Aaron and his sons priests, and that they should use words in verses 6:24-26, to bless the people. So our benedic on has deep roots within Judaism, where it is called the Priestly Prayer and is spoken in services, at home, and at the comple on of a mitzvah (divine commandment). As Chris anity emerged from Judaism, just as the Ten Commandments were kept as important in the new religion, so also the Benedic on poem was kept in the liturgy of the Roman Catholic religious service. Even later Mar n Luther saved it in the order of service for Protestants. So today around the world people sense God’s light, warmth and peace, as we hear this great ancient benedic on poem: English

Music Wri en by Ole Bull on Your Computer One may spend a pleasant hour at the computer exploring the topic of Ole Bull and his music via Google and www.youtube.com. Some tunes he wrote, popular during his tours of America before the Civil War, “Niagra,â€? “Solitude of the Prairies,â€? and “to the Memory of Washington,â€? are not found on Youtube, but you can hear an Ole Bull Mix including “SĂŚterjentens SĂ˜ndag,â€? with a vocal by Sissel, very pleasant. Ole Bull was a highly successful violinist who performed hundreds of Folke-Concerts in many countries. He had such conďŹ dence and energy that he did not always bother to follow strict classical teachings. He whi led down the li le wooden “bridgeâ€? on the valuable violin he played to bring the strings closer to the ďŹ ngerboard, enabling him to play up to 4 strings at once. His musical embellishments suited to this modiďŹ ed violin could not be duplicated by other violinists. A person of genuine talent, a musical prodigy as a child, he created his own way of playing that, together with his strength and courageous ability to travel and play concerts, pleased the public and made him wealthy. A book one can read free on the computer screen, “The Project Gutenberg EBook of Ole Bull,â€? by his second wife, Sara C. Bull, tells the story of his life (1810-1880), his inuence in both Norway and America, and his misadventures, including a steamboat crash on the Ohio River when he jumped o the burning boat, swam with his violin to shore, and played a concert the next day.

WHY OCTOBER 9? The holiday was first recognized by Wisconsin in 1930, eventually becoming a nationally observed holiday Ç ĹšÄžĹś ŽŜ ^ĞƉƚĞžÄ?ÄžĆŒ ĎŽÍ• ĎϾϲϰ WĆŒÄžĆ?Ĺ?ĚĞŜƚ :ŽŚŜĆ?ŽŜ žĂĚĞ Ä‚ WĆŒĹ˝Ä?ůĂžĂƚĹ?ŽŜ ƚŚĂƚ ŽĨĨĹ?Ä?Ĺ?ĂůůLJ͕ ĨĆŒŽž ƚŚĞŜ ŽŜ KÄ?ƚŽÄ?ÄžĆŒ Ͼ͕ Ĺ?Ć? Erik’s dad was Thorvald Asvaldsson, who was actually banished from Norway for manslaughter, which is what sent young Erik there in the first place. BAD OMENS Erik the Red was set to join Leif on his first North American expedition, but he left the crew after falling off his horse on the way to board the ship and took the fall as a bad omen. “LEIF THE LUCKYâ€? Leif and his crew stayed on in Vinland for a winter, and when they made their return to Greenland in the spring, they picked up yet another group of castaways on the way home. Thus, the punchy nickname “Leif the Luckyâ€? was born. WHERE IS VINLAND? Some people believe that Vinland is around the Cape Cod area, while others swear it’s in the north of Newfoundland. Still others believe that “Vinlandâ€? as a name applies to a wide region, not just one spot. What we do know, however, is that there is a Norse settlement at the northern tip of Newfoundland and signs of similar settlements around Canada’s Gulf of St. Lawrence. While Cape Cod doesn’t have the same evidence to back up strangely persistent beliefs that it was actually the site of Vinland, there is a stone wall in Provincetown that has been attributed to Leif’s younger brother, Thorvald. RELIGIOUS LIFE Leif got hip to Christianity after a trip to Norway that resulted in his becoming a bit of a consultant to King Olaf Tryggvason, and he quickly tried to convert his family and friends once he landed back in Greenland. His mother, Thjóðhildr, was so into Leif’s religious awakening that she too became a Christian and even built her own church, called Thjóðhild's Church. Erik wasn’t so keen on the idea, and steadfastly stayed with his Norse paganism. THORVALD’S ADVENTURES Despite some claims that Leif returned to Vinland, it’s generally believed he didn’t—but that he sent out younger brother Thorvald instead (perhaps that’s where that stone wall came from). Two years after Leif’s discovery of North America, Thorvald borrowed his ship and set out to see it for himself. For a couple of years, Thorvald and his men explored the coastal areas, until a “skirmishâ€? with Native Americans reportedly ended in Thorvald’s death. He is believed to be the first European to die and be buried in North America, which is a sad distinction.
