Manchester’s one of a kind choir for mental health

Choir master Dan McDwyer and arts organisation TripleC* areto start a Manchester choir for people with mental health issues. The choir will be unique: it will be a safe way for people to join in with a group activity with proven wellbeing benefits. Additionally, it will also come with on-hand psychological support to signpost people to further services if needed. The choir starts in the first week of March. The message is that anyone who has had or still has a mental health condition is welcome to join. It will be at the Bridgewater Halland no previous singing experience is needed. Dan McDwyer, has also worked with the Parrswood Choir who sang with Ariana Grande at the One Love Concert. He said: “Music can be such a powerful channel for emotions – and singing with one voice brings a sense of unity to everyone who takes part. “The music will contemporary and modern – and that upbeat feel sums up the project and its aspirations.” Psychologist Elaine Craig, who will also be at the weekly events, is keen to stress the proactive benefits of the choir. “There are so many benefits for people, with joining with a group activity,” she says. “It stops isolation and by singing with one voice, there is a real element of team work and working towards a single goal. “This isn’t going to be a choir that defines people by their

mental health condition – it will be a safe place where people can have fun. The results of the choir will also be evaluated by wellbeing questionnaires before and after performances, for those people who give their permission to do so.

An American 16-year-old who feels that enough isn’t done to represent the different colours people come in within beauty brands has started her own makeup page. TNT News The portion sizes of some of Britain’s most popular foods are to be cut, with health officials telling the public it is time “to get on a diet”. Public Health England is targeting pizzas, ready meals, processed meat and takeaways, in a new obesity drive. The government agency has also urged the food industry to start using healthier ingredients and encourage the public to opt for lower calorie foods. It is all part of a drive to cut calorie consumption by 20% by 2024. The target will apply to 13 different food groups, responsible for a fifth of the calorie intake of children. It comes on top of the sugar reduction programme, launched last year, which is targeting nine different food groups. It also comes above the sugar drinks levy, which comes into force in April. Combined, these three measures mean health officials are taking direct action to influence the consumption of foods responsible for half of children’s calories. But PHE chief executive Duncan Selbie said the steps were as much about influencing the diets of adults. “Britain needs to go on a diet. Children and adults routinely eat too many calories, and it’s why so many are overweight or obese.”

A new study has found that ethnic minority workers in the capital’s public sector face a pay gap of up to 37%.The finding is not exactly surprising, but it is particularly depressing in this year, the 70th anniversary of Windrush and half a century since the 1968 Race Relations Act finally outlawed the infamous “no blacks, no Irish, no dogs” signs. Across the UK, and particularly in London, racial diversity is nothing new. Yet a report last year from the Equality and Human Rights Commission found that “broadly speaking, in the period 1993-2014, there has been very little narrowing of ethnic pay gaps and for some groups they have actually increased, particularly among men”. There is clearly discrimination in employment, with people with equivalent qualification but with African and Asian surnames having to send in twice as many CVs just to get an interview. Black and minority-ethnic people are also more likely to face disciplinary action and other decisions that most affect progression and pay. An anonymous public-sector worker told TNT that, “people should be paid equally for the job that they are doing. “Everybody is working hard. If you are putting in 110% as the person in the same role next to you, you should be paid equally for your effort.” There’s no shortage of ideas on how to respond to these inequalities – from diverse recruitment panels to name-blind CVs.
