May 1, 2018 Dear OC Marathon Participants: On behalf of the Santa Ana City Council, greetings and welcome to the 14th Annual San Diego Credit County Credit Union Orange County Marathon. We are so pleased that the Marathon will run through the City of Santa Ana as we are happy to showcase some of our City’s unique qualities. The number of participants in this year’s OC Marathon totals 23,000 individuals. With one of the largest kids runs in the country, over 9,000 children will participate, 1,000 of which are from the City of Santa Ana. Also from Santa Ana, last year’s winner of the OC Marathon was resident Jose Madera. I wish the best of luck to all participating runners this year. I want to take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers, staff and Marathon supporters who have been so important to the success of this event. We appreciate your efforts and contributions. I hope you will enjoy this year’s OC Marathon.

LETTER FROM THE RACE DIRECTOR We are so proud to welcome runners and walkers from 44 states and 19 countries to the 14th Annual OC Running Festival, featuring the SDCCU OC Marathon and Half Marathon, the Wahoo’s OC 5K and the Kids Run the OC here in beautiful Orange County, California. The OC Marathon began back in 2004 with a vision of supporting Orange County children’s charities. It has grown to become a world-class running event in Southern California. Our event encourages community celebration, promotes a healthy lifestyle, creates awareness for participating charities and inspires kids to fitness. We encourage participants to Make the Miles Matter and raise much needed dollars for one of our 30 Official Charities or to select an important cause of their own. This year, our charities will exceed $500,000 and since 2004, the OC Marathon will have helped our charity partners to raise over $6 million dollars to support their various missions. With a mission to Inspire Kids To Fitness, our Kids Run the OC program, again expands to more schools, this year hitting 150 and will have over 9,000 children registered to participate in our Kids Run the OC presented by Nutrilite “Final Mile”. This amazing children’s running event is one of the largest youth running events in the country and will be held on Saturday morning. Please come by the festival fields just west of the Expo Hall to watch some of our kids run their final mile. You too, will be inspired. The Wahoo’s OC 5K remains on Saturday at 5:00 PM and in celebration of Wahoo’s Fish Tacos 30th Anniversary, this year’s 5K is an 80’s theme with a costume contest and Flashback Heart Attack on the main stage. Over 1,200 runners will run the next morning in the full or half marathon and claim their Combo CRUSH medal. This is our second year for the OC Corporate Challenge. The corporate challenge is designed to encourage participation in a fun event that promotes workplace wellness, advocating for a healthier lifestyle and building camaraderie. Last year we were excited to award Mark IV Capital, Kia Motors America and Nutrilite as the winners of the OC’s Fittest Firms in their respective categories. None of this is possible without the generosity and support of our partners/sponsors that help our event take place. The newest member to our family is San Diego County Credit Union becoming our title sponsor of the newly named SDCCU OC Marathon and Half Marathon. SDCCU has five branches in Orange County and is committed to helping individuals improve their own financial health and wellness. Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, simply the best fish tacos, is now in their 9th year as sponsor of the 5K. We want to welcome back KIA Motors America as the Official Automotive partner and want to invite everyone to check out the vehicles this weekend including the all-new Kia Stinger. All of the finishers in the marathon and half marathon will be given an amazing Runner’s Reward from another new partner, Saje Natural Wellness. As our Official Essential Oils and Wellness partner, runners will also be pampered by the Saje team after they finish in the Saje Recovery Zone. We also welcome back KIND Snacks, Travel Costa Mesa, HOKA ONE ONE, Massage Envy Spa, Gatorade Endurance, UPS, Manatt, Honey Stinger, Alta Dena (TruMoo), and our official host hotels, the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Spa and the Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa. We also could not do any of this without this most special group of people, our volunteers. These amazing people, many that may not even run, start their day at zero-dark thirty, stand around for hours, offering water or assistance and always encouragement to people that may or may not say thank you. Please know that you are appreciated by all of these runners and all of us at the OC Marathon. Lastly, a very special thank you to the city staff, public safety departments of our four host cities, Newport Beach, Irvine, Santa Ana and Costa Mesa, as well as the County of Orange and the various other agencies that make this event possible. Our OC staff, and the amazing team from Book That Event as well as more than 2,000 volunteers and charities are dedicated to putting on an amazing weekend for all of you. We wish all of you the best of luck and thank you for participating in the 2018 OC Running Festival. Have fun and don’t forget to thank the volunteers, Gary, Event Director

SUGGESTIONS FOR CHEERING Thinking about hosting a Marathon party along the course on race day? The following is a list of the must-haves: • Lawn and patio decorations • Encouraging signs, banner and balloons • Fun radio station and upbeat music • CDs, Jill FM, the Sound, K-EARTH, JACK FM and K-WAVE. • Musical instruments • Drums, harmonicas, bagpipes, guitars, saxophones and trumpets • Noisemakers and party favors • Blow horns, kazoos, whistles, clappers and cowbells • Create a Theme • For example, celebrate with an ‘80s theme or pretend you’re a runner crossing your own mini finish line. You could even dress up as a cheerleader. Invite fun, cheerful, and encouraging guests with lots of energy. • Create a Team Cheer • You can hoot and holler a special cheer for the runners as they pass by, and coordinate a team wave. • Cheer signs and posters! • Water, water and more water! • Food, food and more food! • A loud voice!
Up Next, cruise the Beach with the Beach Cities Challenge! 2018 is the year of the Shark!
