Welcoming a new administration

In an inauguration ceremony dramatically downsized by the COVID-19 pandemic, Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States early Wednesday afternoon.

The ceremony was held virtually, with few guests in attendance because of rising COVID cases in America.

Security around the U.S. Capitol as a result of the security breach two weeks prior.

Biden’s hand placed on a 5-inch thick family bible, Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath while Biden’s wife Dr. Jill Biden, son Hunter Biden and daughter Ashley Biden stood proud beside him.

Vice President Kamala Harris made history by being the first female, first african american and first south asian Vice President to be sworn into office. Harris is set to play an important role in the new administration entering the White House.

The few guests who were in attendance to the 46th Inauguration included former

President Obama with former First Lady Michelle Obama, former President Bush with former First Lady Laura Bush and former President Clinton with former First Lady Hillary Clinton. Other political figures were also present, such as former Vice President Mike Pence, Senate Majority Leader Rep. Mitch McConnell and Speaker of the House?Nancy Pelosi.

ACTIVE FAITH! (Part #2) “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.” (Heb.11: NIV) These Ancients of the Bible were commended for their faith. “Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.” (Gen.6:9 NIV) He believed God existed and God rewarded those who diligently sought him. His faith brought immediate action. (Heb.11:8) He did not put the building of the ark on a long “to do” list. It took 100 years to build. During that time he constantly spoke of the judgement that was coming. (2 Pet.2:5) This was the situation in Noah’s day.

How about our day? Do we believe God exists? To so many, God is something of the past; one you give an hour or so every Sunday morning, because of tradition, but he does not truly count

for much in life. So this moves us to turn to things that have only temporary pleasure, and build our life activities around them. Noah and others mentioned in Heb. 11, were looking for something lasting, something God had promised. They realized they were strangers and pilgrims; living here for a short time. They were living for something better. (Heb.11:13-16) It is so worthwhile to read and reread the New Testament and consider what was the hope of the early Christian leaders; they passed on to all the believers. It was not centered in this present life. They were “running a race;” living a life centered in the example of Jesus himself, and in those who walked with him during his earthly life. We can do the same; live for the eternal, present ourselves to Christ, and let him use us to bear lasting fruit.

When former Oklahoma State student Adam Dinkledine turned on the news the other day, he saw one of the strangest sights of his life: his college roommate was arrested for secretly living in the busiest airport in the world.

“I was sitting in my home office and just about fell out of my chair,” Dinkledine told The O’Colly. “I saw his picture and his name and I was like ‘surely not, it’s got to be somebody else.’

And I looked into it and it definitely was him.”

According to multiple reports, Aditya Udai Singh, who graduated from OSU with two master’s degrees from Oklahoma State in 2018, lived undetected in Chicago’s O’Hare airport from Oct. 19 to Jan. 16 because he was “scared to go home because of Covid.”

After arriving in Chicago on a flight from Los Angeles in October, Singh lived in the security zone of the O’Hare Airport, receiving food from

generous passengers and remaining incognito after stealing the ID badge of an operations manager to avoid suspicion.

“He’s a smart guy,” Dinkledine said.

“It does seem like it would take a certain level of ingenuity to be in the airport for that long. I definitely think he’s clever enough to pull it off. I don’t think he was trying to hurt anybody or anyone or anything.”

Singh has been charged with the impersonation of an airport employee after stealing an operations manager’s security badge, as well as theft of less than $500.

Dinkledine said he doesn’t think any of Singh’s actions had malicious intent. Though they haven’t spoken in years, he described Singh as friendly, but silent.

“He’s a quiet soft spoken guy, he’s really nice and friendly,” Dinkledine said. “I did not get to know him that well. We kind of had our own friend groups but we lived in the same house for one year.”

Defeat in the (metaphorical) desert

The flat, tan expanse of Eddie Sutton Court resembled a desert of sorts on Wednesday night. A widely beige scene was broken up by flashes of white and green clad players.

For the Cowgirl offense on it was the lack of points — not water — that had the 4,700 square-foot wooden space in Stillwater feeling like a small piece of the Great Sahara.

Scoring drought and a struggling offense (especially in the first half) were a factor in Oklahoma State’s 77-58 loss to conference foe Baylor on Wednesday night.

“It’s very frustrating when they are scoring back to back and we can’t get anything to fall,” senior forward Natasha Mack said.

“That’s very frustrating for the team, and it kind of puts us in a mood that we can’t let affect our game.”

The Cowgirls started ice cold, shooting 0 for 8 as a team to start the game. That led to Baylor opening up a quick 9-2 lead.

“Honestly, it’s very difficult when you start off slow,” Mack said. “That’s just something we have to fix in practice and take serious in the games.”

The Cowgirls only scored eight points in the first quarter. As a team, OSU shot 49% from the field but made just two 3-pointers.

While the offense got progressively better each quarter, it was not enough to overcome a strong burst from the Bears.

That part of the game, which came halfway through the game, was the most crippling OSU offensive dry spell. If the court was a desert, the Bears — wearing all emerald green — found a bit of an oasis. Over a five-minute period that spilled into the third quarter, Baylor went on a 14-0 run.

That OSU dry spell took the deficit from a manageable 10 to being down by 24 and extinguished all thoughts of a comeback.

“We didn’t start the second half the way we needed to….we started the game missing four point plank shots from about 2 or 3 feet where we were open,” coach Jim Littell said. “Baylor does that to you at times.

They are holding people to 29% field goal percentage and out rebounding people by 20, so we have just got to have a better belief in ourselves and play

with more poise.”

The 58 points scored by OSU were a season-low. The Cowgirls entered the game averaging a respectable 72 points per game but were stifled by senior guard DiDi Richards and the BU defense.

“They’re very solid,” Littell said.

“When you have DiDi Richards, No. 2, that is in my opinion probably the best defensive player in the country at

6-2 — she can guard from the 1 to the 5.

She sets the tone for them defensively, and they block a lot of shots. They play with high hands; they don’t give you many second shots. They’ve always hung their hat on playing great defense and rebounding the basketball.

By Jacob Sturm In the closing moments of the first half, the Oklahoma State women’s basketball team found its groove — only for it to be snatched away.

In the Cowgirls’ 77-58 loss to the Baylor Lady Bears, the tempo favored the visitors.

It forced the Cowgirls into hurried shots they couldn’t convert and

looked to rattle their confidence in the opening minutes of both halves. Cowgirls forward Natasha Mack said it’s frustrating when shots aren’t falling, but they are for the opponent.

“It’s difficult when you start slow to try and pick it up,” Mack said. “We need to come (out) off the bat starting strong and doing what we do best and not letting anybody affect our game.”

A 7-0 Cowgirls run nearly halved the 16-point deficit with 2:55 until halftime, but Mack missed a free throw at the end of the

run, and OSU fouled on the other end.

After going 1 for 2 on the trip, Lady Bears guard Moon Ursin made a steal and finished the fast break with a layup, then received an outlet and scored again with one second left.

What looked like a meaningful run suddenly looked minute.

The score didn’t get closer. The Lady Bears scored the first 10 points in the third quarter and didn’t relent in intensity.

OSU didn’t score for the opening 5:41 of the second half as the lead increased to 47-23.

OSU coach Jim Littell said the approach to each half isn’t a formula to success.

“You can win a lot of games and lose a lot of games in the first five minutes of the game and the first five minutes of the second half,” Littell said. “And that’s what we did…we played cautious and we played unsure to start the two halves.”

The Lady Bears used their hands well, disrupting the Cowgirls’ plan to get Mack the ball in the low post.

Baylor collapsed its perimeter defense multiple times, forcing OSU

into silly turnovers.

OSU’s opportunities to get easy points were few and far between. The Cowgirls missed inside on multiple occasions as they struggled to regain their confidence.

“We just got to have a better belief in ourselves and play with more poise,” Littell said. “Hit little shots.

It’s hard to get open shots against them and when you do, you’ve got to make your 2-footers.”
