Black History Month mobile museum comes to stillwater

By Addie Duling The Black History 101 Mobile Museum came to OSU’s campus on Tuesday, March 9.

The museum was brought to campus by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Center for Africana Studies and the Student Union Activities Board. These associations partnered together to fund the museum and bring it to Stillwater.

The founder, CEO and curator of the museum, Khalid el-Hakim, has collected thousands upon thousands of artifacts, only a small portion of which were on display. l-Hakim traveled the country for over 30 years visiting antique shops, flea markets, estate sales, auctions and more to build upon his diverse collection of memorabilia.

Ramirez attended the museum with her husband and her fifteen-year-old daughter. They felt attending the museum was a valuable opportunity to learn about and discuss race and institutional discrimination.

The exhibit has been on display in over 40 states and at over 500 different institutions.

“One of the reasons we’re interested in bringing the museum in was because of the mobility,” Johnson said. “We could put it in a space that was not tight. It is open and allows for multiple people to come in and as people are visiting the museum, they can take it at their own pace. It allows for us to have an in-person event but do it safely.”

The museum has also recently added a virtual option to continue to educate visitors and communities during COVID-19.

AutoZone and other companies seek ways to encourage vaccination

Marcus Trevino Several companies are incentivizing their employees to take COVID-19 vaccinations.

AutoZone is the latest company to publicly announce its new incentive policy. Their employees will receive $100 upon completion of the final dose of the vaccine.

AutoZone’s CEO, Bill Rhodes, said the health and safety of employees and customers is the company’s top priority.

“We are removing any work-related barriers, strongly encouraging and incentivizing AutoZoners to get a COVID-19 vaccine when they are eligible,” Rhodes said in a statement.

ALDI, Olive Garden, Dollar General and McDonald’s are offering their workers up to four hours of paid time off to get vaccinated.

Each manager of these Stillwater locations declined to comment on whether or not their employees were likely to take advantage of these opportunities.

Nevertheless, the companies are hoping to encourage immunity around the community.

Autozone is offering $100 to employees who prove that they have received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Lifestyle Red Dirt Film Festival Documentary Highlight

by Amelia Jauregui An interior checkpoint created in 1994 in Brooks County, Texas, is the difference between life and death for upwards of 600 migrants each year. It is also the difference between the existence of a new documentary, Missing In Brooks County.

“Missing in Brooks County” is a new feature-length documentary shedding light on the events that are happening in Texas currently, and will be shown at The Red Dirt International Film Festival here in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Lisa Molomot, co-director of this documentary, was able to share information on what the film is specifically about.

“So Missing in Brooks County is a documentary feature that deals with the situation in Brooks County, Texas, where there is an interior checkpoint, which is almost like a second border for the migrants who are coming from Latin America and have already crossed at the border of Mexico and the US,” Molomot said. “They usually come in groups and they’re picked up by their group or their guide, and they’re driven up to Brooks County. But due to this

interior checkpoint, migrants usually have to get out of the car and then walk around the checkpoint which is like a three to four-day walk through private ranches, in order to avoid this checkpoint.”

Due to the long journey and immense heat in southern Texas, it is not uncommon for these migrants to get lost on the way or die of dehydration. Molomot got the idea to create this documentary to share just the amount of heartbreak and pain that is brought because of it.

“So our story is really about two families that are looking for their missing loved ones in Brooks

County, so we decided to interweave these two stories of these families looking for their loved ones together,” Molomot said. “And then we also hear from local human rights activities who communicate with the families who are missing loved ones, as well as people whose work is to try to identify remains that are found on some of these ranches, but also from vigilante ranchers who’re not happy that migrants are coming through their property and kind of have these dogs that chase after them.”

Defining it as an ensemble film, Molomot expressed just how much collaboration and

vulnerability it took to have such a range of interviews and opinions on the matter.

And with any film or project, there are goals set out to accomplish. For Molomot and her team, the goal was to shed light on this heavy and lesserknown situation.

“Right now we are actually working on an impact campaign and we’re bringing together different people working on border policy to show them the film to try to generate some ideas of how they can use this film to kind of explain the situation,” Molomot said. “So this film can kind of deal with the emotional side of what’s going on, that

can’t really put in a policy paper.”

As for bringing this film to Stillwater itself, The Red Dirt Festival seemed like a good match between the topic and audience.

“You know, this one seems like a good festival and a good way to show audiences in Oklahoma the film,” Molomot said. “It really seems like a good audience in general.

But really, for me, any audience is a good audience, I just want to share with as many people as possible, but what we learned about this festival just seemed like a good match.” entertainment.ed@ocolly.com

A 13 seed can’t be written off as an easy win for the Cowboys, especially when it’s Liberty.

The Flames upset No. 5 Mississippi State in the first round of the 2019 tournament as a 12 seed.

Speaking of 12 seeds, No. 12 Oregon State will also look to carry the momentum gained from winning the Pac-12 title into the tournament. If the Cowboys win, and the Beavers pull off the upset, the two would face each other in the second round.

Perennial tournament team Syracuse snuck in with an 11 seed this year, and Rutgers earned the 10 seed, both

capable of pulling off an upset.
