Oklahoma State University will roll out the orange carpet for student fashion designers Friday.

The Department of Design, Housing & Merchandising in the in the College of Human Sciences is bringing back the Euphoria Fashion Show – An Orange Carpet Affair for its sixth year at 8 p.m.

Taylor Douglass, a DHM senior and this year’s producer, said the show is not only an OSU-sponsored event but also a shining moment for all students in the DHM department.

“It’s a student-run organization that puts on a fashion show to showcase mainly the senior designers and their final collections,” Douglass said.

It’s also an opportunity for students in the apparel merchandising track of the DHM degree to show off their event-planning and production skills. Interior design students can apply their techniques in design and production.

offered within the DHM department for producing the fashion show in the spring, most students start preparing months before the semester begins.

Douglass’ co-producer Kirsi Williams, a DHM senior, said the event took months to perfect and they began planning major aspects of the show in November.

Diane Limbaugh, a DHM clinical instructor and adviser, said the process for producing the show officially starts in January with the class discussing specific features of the show, such as the venue and budget.

designs from 16 students. Of those students, five apparel design seniors will present their senior collections.

Sydney McAleb, an apparel design senior, said planning for her collection began almost a year ago and she has spent most of the semester finalizing each garment. She said the culture and music of the 1960s and 1970s inspired her collection.

“I wanted to create pieces that took those revolutionary colors and ideas and highlight the similarities in our current cultural climate,” McAleb said.

guests what they have learned over the course of their education. This May, only five students will graduate with a degree in DHM with an option in apparel design.

Chandler Craven, an apparel design senior, said she remembers how seeing the collections inspired her as a freshman.

“I had never sewn before this major,” Craven said.

“So to think that I would be able to do something like that, I didn’t think that was possible.”

The show’s producers expect more than 300 guests, including parents, faculty and the public.

With the new north wing of the Human Sciences building, Euphoria moved from

the ConocoPhillips Alumni Center back to the school in the Great Hall.

The runway won’t have a traditional layout, Douglass said. The producers said the stage will go through the crowd, giving viewers a 360-degree view of the models and garments.

“I’m excited, and I’m also nervous because with each new venue becomes a whole different set of challenges,” Limbaugh said. “But it’s kind of nice to bring it back to the college.”

Four professionals from the fashion industry will judge the students’ designs, including Philip Washington, a Stillwater native who owns the Oklahoma City-based modeling agency Philip Ryan International Model Management. Washington will both judge the models and look for potential models to sign to his agency.

Awards in the past have included most marketable collection, best use of nontextile/sustainable design, best use of computer-aided design, and top male and female model.

Tickets for the show are $25 for general admission and $50 for VIP admission,

which includes access to a reception and silent auction.

A special addition to this year’s fashion show is a silent auction for VIP ticket holders at 6:30 p.m., which the DHM Advisory Board is sponsoring. There will also be a reception for VIP ticket holders, parents and DHM faculty to meet the senior designers.

Proceeds will go to the DHM department to help purchase computers for the interior design studios, including the DHM Mixed Reality classroom, according to the Human Sciences website.

With the new venue, runway and silent auction, the producers and designers said they expect a fun event not only for them but also for parents and guests.

“It’s not going to be something that you’re going to be bored at,” Douglass said.

“It’s going to be something you’re going to see amazing work at.”

In what has thus far been a disappointing season for the Oklahoma State baseball team, the same could be said for a handful of its veterans.

As the Cowboys brace for a road series against No. 4 Texas Tech, several of their opening day starters have only occasionally seen their names in the lineup, pushed into platoon roles with freshmen. That includes senior first baseman Dustin Williams, who has started only 22 of OSU’s 36 games after starting 63 of 65 for last year’s College World Series team. Williams said coach Josh Holliday has talked at length with the platooned veterans of their required involvement, a message they’ve followed through on.

“We’ve gotta be ready,” Williams said. “At any moment, we could have to go out there. … We never want to come out here and not be engaged with what’s going on, whether we’re one of the nine guys out here or whether we’re over here (on the bench). I think that’s a really special quality about our team.”

In addition to Williams, center fielder Ryan Sluder, a Preseason All-American a year ago, has battled injuries and inconsistency the past two seasons. Jacob Chappell seemed to have an early grasp on OSU’s shortstop job, but he’s batting .182. The quartet, though, combined to play major roles for the Cowboys (21-15 overall, 4-8 Big 12) in their victory Tuesday against Oral Roberts.

None of them started the game, with OSU’s lineup at one point having five straight freshmen.

Williams’ pinch-hit home run trimmed a late deficit in a game that eventually went to extra innings. In the 11th, Sluder laid down a sacrifice bunt to put the winning run, Chappell, at second. After Williams was intentionally walked, Rosa’s ground-rule double scored Chappell and gave OSU its first walk-off victory of the season.

“I’m really happy for a couple of kids who delivered, who’ve had some tough runs at it,” Holliday said after the

game. “... They understand they haven’t produced a ton, and with that, you gotta produce. They all understand that, and we’re trying to match up and keep guys involved and give guys chances, and when you get a chance and you do good, you get a chance again.”

Near the bottom of the Big 12, the Cowboys need a series victory against the Red Raiders (32-8, 8-4), another team that made it to Omaha last year. OSU is 0-4 against teams from last season’s College World Series field.

From the bench or the lineup, the veterans can go a long way in reversing that trend.

“I think for us, we have to be that type of team,” Holliday said. “We need all of our parts to be used effectively, and we need to buy into that as an identity and celebrate it. Good for those kids. I’m proud of them for being team-oriented.”

Choosing a career is an important and sometimes difficult decision to make. There are numerous resources available at OSU for academic and career success. Consultants in Career Services will sit down one-on-one with students to offer career assessment and exploration tips and strategies.

Students interested in increasing their chances of finding their dream job can attend information sessions, such as Adulting 101: Emotional Intelligence, Dress for Success and mock interviews. The Hire System on the Career Services website provides a way to explore opportunities for internships and part-time or full-time jobs.

Hundreds of employers from across the country visit campus each year for career fairs. Some individual colleges have their own events, such as the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology Career Fair, which focus on careers related to course-offerings within the particular college.

Advice From a Professional Pamela Ehlers, director of OSU Career Services, encourages students to meet with a career consultant as early as their freshman year. “We serve students from ‘admissions to positions’. Form a relationship with your career consultant and let them help you,” said Ehlers.

Ehlers, who has more than 30 years of experience working in career counseling and development, encourages students to not declare a major right away, “Take different classes that interest you before deciding on a major.” Regardless of major, Ehlers stresses the importance of learning to be flexible and honing speaking and writing skills. “Students should use university resources such Don't declare a major as tutoring services and the writing center and take advantage right away.
