Saxophone theft robs student’s way of life Zach Collums @zachcollums

To Jarred Carlton, his saxophones represent more than just instruments that allow him to teach or make a living.

They are instruments filled with stories about exceptional opportunities to play in far away places and watching students fall in love with music.

But, the creation of new stories has come to an unexpected halt.

After leaving his alto and tenor saxophones in his car while he went to school March 18, Carlton, an OSU graduate student, discovered his saxophones had been stolen.

Although the saxophones cost $4,000 each, Carlton lost more than money. From playing gigs in the birthplace of Jazz to teaching students in north Texas, Carlton has made unforgettable memories along the way, increasing the instruments’ sentimental value.

Carlton said his saxophones are special because of what they can bring to people listening to his music.

“For me the feeling of fruition is when people get something from it,” Carlton said. “It means I’ve done something on another level that you just can’t put into words. That comes to me and it makes me feel amazing because I made a difference.

“You don’t really know exactly, how you made a difference but you know you have affected their lives intrinsically. It’s mind blowing because I used a saxophone to do that.”

From an early age, Carlton was introduced to a life of music. His parents and his two older brothers were all musicians growing up. Music was always around, whether it was instrument practice at the house or singing at church.

“My brother plays drums, my mom sings and my other brother plays trombone, so it was something that was constantly there,” Carlton said.

After a move from California, where Carlton was born, to Texas in 1999, Carlton became more involved in athletics, especially football.

Even though athletics began to take up more of his time, Carlton still continued playing music.

“It was always athletics

and music, but music was always something I could count on day in and day out,” he said. “It led me to crazy different places.”

Carlton went on to study music education at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

Once there, Carlton met Hardrick Rivers, a professor at Northwestern State.

“When I moved to Louisiana, I was very fortunate to find a guy (Rivers) that took me under his tutelage,” Carlton said. “He played in all the bars clubs and casinos and basically took me under his wing. I got my formal instruction, and I got that informal instruction. Plus, I got to travel around the beautiful state of Louisiana.”

While in college, Carlton took an internship in Australia, where he played in superbands with musicians ages16 to 20.

For Carlton, playing the saxophone isn’t just about the thrill of playing in remarkable locations.

“When I’m playing the saxophone, I’m really trying to express a story, a feeling, an emotion,” Carlton said.

“I’m trying to evoke an emotion from whoever’s listening, no matter if it’s happy

or sad or it’s a distant time where they, too, can travel back, like, ‘Oh I used to listen to that song with my dad,’ or,0 ‘Me and mom used to go here; that song would always be on the radio.’

“So it’s just really trying to evoke a memory or emotion out of them. There are just sometimes when you can’t express the emotions inside of you out with words, so that’s where the saxophone

and music speaks.”

Just as Carlton tries to evoke memories from his audience, he’s also created his own unique memories with his saxophone and jazz music. One of Carlton’s favorite memories is of when he had the opportunity to perform with his brother for his mom for the first time last month.

special to his mom, being able to see her sons play together just for her.

“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to make your mom proud on a level where she was like, ‘I produced two musicians that are playing for me right now,’” Carlton said. “Even though it was a crowded banquet hall, it was us playing for her.”

April 20: MARIN ‘CURRENTLY NOT COMPETENT TO STAND TRIAL’ Attorneys claim a Stillwater man who nearly beheaded his friend is psychotic and unfit to stand trial.

Attorneys for Isaiah Zoar Marin, 21, who is charged with first-degree murder, filed an application April 14 asking Payne County court to schedule a competency hearing after a psychologist evaluated Marin.

After meeting with Marin on two separate oc-

casions, psychologist Jolie Brams diagnosed Marin with Asperger’s Syndrome and delusional disorder, according to the document.

“Mr. Marin has an all-consuming belief that he has been chosen by an interplanetary group named ‘Stellar’ that places demands on him,” the document states.

Marin said he believes his mother placed a “chip” in his head at the instruction of Stellar, which he also believes is monitoring his thoughts and beliefs, according to the document.

Brams finds that Marin’s inability to distinguish between reality and fantasy interferes with his relationship to his attorneys, the document states.

Marin has doubts as to whether his attorney, Peter Astor, is “operating in the real world or not” and is concerned Stellar may try to interfere with Astor’s representation of him, according to the document.

Although Marin is currently on medication for psychosis, Brams has declared him “floridly psychotic.”

Marin’s competency hearing was held April 20, and Special District Judge Katherine Thomas ruled there was evidence to doubt Marin’s competency. She ordered an evaluation for competency be performed by the Oklahoma Forensic Center. She also ruled Marin, who is being held without bail, confined to

Payne County Jail until he is transported to OFC as he poses a danger to others.

Thomas ordered the evaluation to be completed

by Marin’s next court hearing, June 1 at 9 a.m.

Sunday: STILLWATER POLICE INVESTIGATING SUNDAY NIGHT SHOOTING A 21-year-old Stillwater man was shot in the head after an altercation at an apartment complex Sunday night, according to a media release from the Stillwater Police Department.

At 9:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to Stillwater Medical Center after receiving a report that a gun shot victim was

requesting treatment. As officers were responding to the SMC call, police were notified of reports of gun shots at the Logwood Apartments, 716 N. Husband St. Officers were told two men entered the apartment where the victim, whose name has not been released, and a juvenile witness were staying, the release states.

Both suspects were armed with guns and forced the juvenile to the floor while the victim was taken into a bedroom, according to the release.

An altercation occurred between the victim and one of the suspects, and the victim was shot in the head as a result, the release states.

The men were seen

running from the apartment immediately after the shots were fired and left the scene in a maroon or burgundy sedan.

The witness drove the shooting victim to SMC, where he was treated and released.

Detectives determined at least two shots were fired after police found two bullets struck the floor of the victim’s apartment and the ceiling of the downstairs apartment. No one else was injured as a result of the shooting.

No arrests have been made in this case. Anyone with information is asked to contact SPD at 405372-4171.

Carlton said teaching at Centennial and working with jazz groups at OSU has allowed him to do more than simply teach

music.

“The biggest impact is taking a group of young children, regardless of the age, and giving them a new concept and finally seeing the light go off, like, ‘Ah, that makes sense,’ then inspiring that passion from them,” Carlton said.

One of Carlton’s professors, Jeffrey Loeffert, assistant professor of saxophone and theory, said Carlton has had a lasting impact on the jazz program at OSU. “Over the past two years, Jarred has helped to cultivate a seriousness in our jazz combo and jazz

chamber music program that we did not have previously,” Loeffert said.

“He has been a tremendous asset to our program, and we are grateful for his many contributions.”

The impact is not the only thing Carlton has shown to those who teach at OSU. Carlton has expressed his love for the saxophone as well.

Ryan Gardner, an assistant professor of trumpet, has been able to see Carlton play his saxophones while at the program at OSU. Gardner said Carlton lets his character come through his music.

“He puts forth a lot

of effort and creativity,” Gardner said. “When he plays, it’s an expression of who he is.”

Since his saxophones were stolen, Carlton has had to rely on borrowing friends’ saxophones for teaching and performing.

He said he doesn’t know who would have stolen his precious instruments.

However, the time away from his personal saxophones could be shorter than Carlton initially thought, thanks to a former colleague.

Once Alan Sypert, a former co-worker from Centennial High School, heard about the stolen

saxophones, he made a gofundme.com account with hopes of replacing them.

Sypert said he hated to see what happened to him because of what kind of teacher and person Jarred Carlton is.

“He’s a fantastic player who has great ideas and a unique sound,” Sypert said. “Kids seem to gravitate toward him and latch on to whatever he says.

They just eat it up.

“He’s really easy to listen to and really easy to respect.”

The fundraiser has $2,230 of its $4,000 goal.

Carlton said the moment

he is able to get the saxophones in his hands again will be a joyous occasion.

“It will be like eight Christmas mornings, before you found out Santa Claus wasn’t real, wrapped into one moment,” Carlton said.

Board of Regents approves expansion and renovations Will Tracy @OColly

Oklahoma State University is making moves to maintain its competitive edge by upgrading its dairy, seeds and fire protection facilities.

The OSU/A&M Board of Regents on Friday chose architects and construction firms to begin the design and construction process of three new projects at OSU. Regents approved an expansion to the Fire Protection Publications Office, an expansion and renovation of the Dairy Center and construction of the new Oklahoma Foundation Seed Stocks facility.

Mike Buchert, director of long-range planning, said the FPPO publishes and sells training materials for fire training and emergency services.

Mike Wieder, associate of Fire Protection Publications, said the organization has simply outgrown the existing facilities.

“We’re the world’s larg-

est publisher of firefighter training material,” Wieder said. “It’s going to require more people than we have now, and we need space for those folks.”

The revenue from those sales will cover the cost of its expansion, which is projected to cost between $2 million and $2.5 million.

The Dairy Barn, on McElroy Road west of campus, was last upgraded in 1987. Buchert said improvements are needed if OSU is to remain nationally competitive, and the primary improvement will be the addition of a freestall barn.

Traditionally, livestock are confined to separate pens while in the barn. A free-stall barn allows the cattle to move freely and mingle. Buchert said allowing the cows to socialize has been shown to improve milk production.

The plan also calls for living quarters for students, who care for the herd, and improved milking and feeding facilities.

Regents selected GH2 Architects of Tulsa and Lippert Brothers of Okla-

homa City to head the Dairy Barn project. The Ferguson Family Foundation is expected to cover the cost with a $2 million donation.

Jeff Wright, coordinator at Foundation Seed, said the Foundation Seed Stock develops better seeds that lead to higher yielding crops. It then sells the improved seeds to regional growers.

He said the current facility is lacking.

“As our varieties have grown in demand, so has the need for more production,” Wright said. “And our current facility just can’t keep up.”

Regents chose McFarland Architects and Nabholz Construction to assist with the project, which is projected to cost $4 million. The majority of that cost will come from private donations.

Buchert said the three projects don’t yet have an estimated time of completion, but he expects them to be completed within three years.

Petting Zoo:

Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Student Union Activities Board will bring a petting zoo to Engineering South Lawn. Ashton Patton, a sophomore English major, helped bring the event to OSU and said the event is for students regardless of their schedule for the day.

“It will be a come-and-go petting zoo, so people can come pet an animal for a few minutes and continue on their way,” Patton said. “It will be a good stress relieving event for students walking by and students who plan on staying awhile.”

Dreamcatcher Carriage and Party Ponies will provide the animals for the petting zoo, which include puppies, kittens, goats, ducks and other small farm animals.

Pete’s Pet Posse:

Wednesday-Thursday Students will have a chance to interact with therapy dogs on campus on Wednesday and Thursday. Waggin’ Wednesday is Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. at Edmond Low and Pete’s Posse is from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Reboot Center in the Student Union.

Kendria Cost, who handles the media inquiries for Pete’s Pet Posse, said the program strives to help the students all semester, but especially during dead week.

“Our hope is that we can take the dogs out and people can interact with our dogs, relieve stress and forget about the exam they are getting ready to take and decompress just a little bit,” Cost said.

Wednesday-Thursday Mindfulness Meditation is a class held at the Seretean Wellness center from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday in Studio 1. The class is open to students and faculty.

Colvin Center to host Superhero Fun Run Stetson Payne @Stetson__Payne

The second annual Superhero Fun Run 5K hosted by the Oklahoma State University Wellness Department is Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Colvin Center front lawn.

The event costs $10 to enter, and participants are encouraged to compete in costume as their favorite hero or villain.

The race itself will be two laps around campus starting at 8 p.m. after

opening activities. A live disc jockey will also be on hand at the Colvin front lawn.

Last year’s event had 170 participants. The run is also paired with a costume contest.

Jason Vlastaras, assistant director for student fitness, said two unique prizes would be given out at the costume contest.

“Legendary Comics here in town have donated two valuable comics as prizes for the costume contest,” Vlastaras said via email. “I’m not 100 percent on the winner, I want to say it was Iron

Oklahoma State softball will wrap up its final nonconference matchup Wednesday after a week off against North Texas in a doubleheader at Cowgirl Stadium.

The Cowgirls (19-28) are coming off a 7-1 loss against the No. 1 offense in the country in Oklahoma.

OSU trailed the Sooners 1-0 through the first three innings but gave up four runs in the top of the fourth, giving OU a commanding lead the Cowgirls couldn’t overome.

The loss marked the young Cowgirls’ 15th in their last 18 games.

“Obviously, they really wanted that one because it’s an in-state rival,” coach Rich Wieligman said. “You have to play your best ball to beat that team.”

OSU sophomore pitcher Brandi Needham has been a

workhorse thus far, pitching a team-high 150 innings.

Wieligman has high praise for Needham and said he looks forward to her improving the rest of the season.

“She goes out there and does everything she needs to do,” Wieligman said. “She has been unfortunate and has had a lot of groundballs find holes, but next year, she will be playing with a lot better defense behind her.”

North Texas (16-27) will look to rebound from a series sweep against Louisiana Tech. The Mean Green head to Stillwater to finish a four-game series against the Cowgirls, which North Texas leads 2-0.

“We have definitely had some ups and downs,” Needham said. “We have had moments where we could definitely use improvement, but we have fought through everything and have never given up. I think things will definitely get better.”

Cowgirls set to host NCAA Regional Brandon Cavazos @bcavazosOSU

Cowgirl tennis00 received a No. 12 overall seed in the NCAA Championships following an impressive season.

It was all smiles in the varsity room at GallagherIba Arena on Tuesday when the Cowgirls obtained an opportunity to compete for a national championship. OSU will host Boston University in the first round of the NCAA Championships and will look to make a run at the national title.

This is the first time in the program’s history that the Cowgirls will host an NCAA Regional.

“It was one of our primary goals at the beginning of the season to be one of the top 16 teams to get a chance to host,” coach Chris Young said.

OSU capped off an exceptional 21-5 season with a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships. The Cowgirls expected a better placing at the Big 12 Championships after performing well in conference play throughout the season.

“It gives us a lot of motivation going into the NCAA tournament that we know that the last match we played wasn’t our best, gives us an opportunity to redeem ourselves,” Young said.

OSU will face a Terriers squad that has recently picked up momentum.

Boston is coming off back-to-back championships in the Patriot League and will make its 15th appearance at the NCAA Championships.

The Terriers finished 14-7 overall and went undefeated in conference play.

“They’re usually a pretty strong program so I know that the first-round matchup will be a tough one,” Young said.

In the 2014 NCAA Tournament, OSU defeated South Florida in the first round but fell to ninth-ranked Florida in the second round.

“Now we have a lot of girls that have played in the tournament before.

They know what to expect and honestly being at home and having our home crowd is going to be exciting for the girls.”
