A guide to going Greek at OSU Kalynn Schwandt Staff Reporter As a new college student, Greek Life is a way to get involved at Oklahoma State University. Within a Greek chapter, there are opportunities that can enhance leadership abilities, friendship, academics and community involvement. At OSU, there are around 45 chapters within four governing councils. These councils include the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, Multicultural Greek Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council. The Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council participate in recruitment processes in which potential new members can join chapters before fall semester at OSU. The Multicultural Greek Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council both participate in intake processes that begin following the fall semester and typically require college credit prior to joining chapters. “For MGC and NPC, their intake process could happen either semester,” Casey DomParticipating in Greek Life at OSU is a great way to get involved on campus.

Service The number of officers who have died by suicide in wake of their response to the January insurrection at the U.S. Capitol doubled late Monday, with the Metropolitan Police Department in the District of Columbia confirming the death of a third and fourth officer. Officer Kyle DeFreytag, a 26-year-old Pennsylvania native, was found dead on July 10. He served in the city’s 5th District and was tasked with enforcing a curfew implemented the night of Jan. 6, after a mob made up of pro-Trump protesters breached the U.S. Capitol in a bid to block the certification of President Joe Biden’s electoral win. “I am writing to share tragic news that Officer Kyle DeFreytag of the 5th District was found deceased last evening,” Chief Robert Contee III wrote in a mid-July message obtained by WUSA. “This is incredibly hard news for us all, and for those that knew him best.” See Insurrection on pg.2

News Insurrection... Continued from pg.1 Confirmation of DeFreytag’s death on Monday came just hours after MPD revealed Officer Gunther Hashida was found dead at his home Thursday. “We are grieving as a department and our thoughts and prayers

are with Officer Hashida’s family and friends,” department spokesperson Hugh Carew said in a statement to the Daily News. Hashida, a veteran of the force since 2003, was assigned to the police Emergency Response Team the day of the Jan. 6 riot. “Officer Hashida was a hero, who risked his life to save our Capitol, the Congressional community and our very Democracy,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. “All Americans are indebted to him

for his great valor and patriotism on January 6th and throughout his selfless service.” Their deaths marked the third and fourth suicides among officers who responded to the U.S. Capitol insurrection. Howard Liebengood, who joined the U.S. Capitol Police in 2005, died by suicide three days after the attack and Metropolitan Police Officer Jeffrey Smith, a 12year veteran of the force, took his life “in the aftermath of that battle,” Contee said during a closed-door

meeting with congressional leaders in January. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick also died from a stroke a day after he was bludgeoned with a fire extinguisher and pelted with pepper spray amid his response to the chaos. Hundreds of people have since been charged in connection with the capitol riots, including two men charged with assaulting Sicknick. news.ed@ocolly.com

News Greek... Continued from pg.1 nick, the coordinator of Fraternity & Sorority Affairs, said. “Students who are interested, we encourage them to follow those fraternities and sororities Instagram pages because that’s where they’re going to post their interest meetings...and what you would need to attend in order to be able to join one of those groups.” The Multicultural Greek Council can be found on Instagram @mgc_osu and The National Pan-Hellenic Council can be found @okstatenphc. For Interfraternity Council Recruitment, chapters invite potential new members to events that take place in informal settings. These events typically take place in the summer so when classes resume in the fall, fraternities have their new pledge classes. The link to register for Interfraternity Council Recruitment can be found here. The abundance of pledge classes for IFC chapters are formed in the fall, but the recruitment process is open throughout the year. The process to join a Panhellenic chapter typically begins the week before school starts in August. Potential new members register to participate in a process that gives them an insight on each of the 13 sorority chapters on campus. Through a mutual-selection process, potential new members narrow down houses throughout the week to find the specific chapter for them. The link to register for Panhellenic Formal Recruitment can be found here. Each day of the week consists of potential new members meeting members of current chapters inside the specific chapter houses. Through one-on-one conversations, potential new members will learn about the chapter’s campus involvement, house, philanthropy events and values as the week goes on. “They do have an informal process that happens later in the year called Continuous Open Bidding,” Domnick said. “Not all of the sororities participate in that. Only about half will participate in that each semester.” Further details and additional information can be found on the Fraternity & Sorority Affairs website or Instagram @ okstatefsa. news.ed@ocolly.com

NEITHER DO I CONDEMN YOU! Neither do I condemn thee; precious words divine. From the lips of Jesus, comes the sweetest chimes. Wonderful words of mercy; sing them o’er and o’er. Neither do I condemn thee; Go and sin no more! (Song)

When a Samaritan village rejected Jesus and his message, John and James wanted call down fire from heaven to judge these people. Jesus rebuked them saying “For the Son of man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” (Lu.9:5156) Jesus came to make away for all people to be free from the judgement of their sins, and give them a better place with God for eternity. The Apostle Paul said, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” (2Co.6:2) This is the time when God’s love and mercy is extended to all. If you have never received this free gift from God, just reach to Christ, who lives today, He will give it freely. “Whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21) If you have received, tell others that they might know, understand God’s love, and receive his free gift of eternal life

These words are based on an encounter in John 8:111. A woman, caught in the act of adultery, was brought to Jesus. The law said she should be stoned. The religious said to Jesus: “what do you say? Jesus said, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” Convicted in their conscience, people began to leave. He was left alone with the woman. All the accusers had left. The only one who could have condemned her, said to her, Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more! Christ did not come to condemn people, but to save them!!

Catching up with Rodarius Williams at Giants training Ryan Novozinsky Editor-in-Chief

After three long years, Rodarius Williams is finally going to see his brother play in an NFL game. He’s been too busy to do it be-

fore –– being a cornerback for OSU requires some demanding hours, after all. But on Aug. 22, Williams will watch his brother, Greedy, who is a CB for the Browns, play from the best view in the stadium. The sideline opposite him. “It’s going to be real fun, I’m looking forward to it,” Williams told The O’Colly at Giants training camp Thursday. The Williams brothers will face off in the game and in two joint practices before that. This has to mean trash-talking galore, right? Not in this sibling rivalry. Williams

said there’s only been advice sharing and motivation between the two. For someone who’s currently grinding through their first training camp after being drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Williams said Greedy’s tips have been crucial. “We’re both trying to help eachother out so that we can become some of the greats in the league some day,” Williams said. The results are evident on the field too. During a 7-on-7 drill in the Giants’ practice on Friday, Williams intercepted a pass from

third-string quarterback Clayton Thorson and diced through the offense afterward. This was a key play for Williams as he tries to earn a spot in New York’s deep secondary. “All I do is show up and work my tail off,” Williams said. When Williams was drafted, his resume was one of the most impressive in OSU’s defensive history. He set a record for consecutive starts (48) –– which was also the longest streak among all FBS defensive backs in his senior season. See Rodarius on pg.5

sports Rodarius... Continued from pg.4 He also had 31 pass breakups, which ranks sixth in school history and was fourth among FBS active players in 2020. Now in the NFL, Williams needs to forget all that

and prove his skill against the best players in the world. That’s why his daily schedule is always football focused –– even in one of the loudest cities in the world. “I’m a pretty chill person, I don’t do too much,” Williams said. “I go here, go to work, then when I get home I study film and go to bed.” When Williams was drafted, he celebrated in the moment, but

kept it brief. He knows that at any time, this dream could be taken away from him. That’s why he “keeps his head down and works.” “The dream goes away fast,” Williams said. “You have to step in and actually live that dream. As a kid you always want this moment, and I’m grateful for it, but every day you need to put one foot in front of the other and work.” Williams learned some of this

in Stillwater too. With four years of playing time, he was a veteran at OSU and picked up on lessons along the way. While he misses it sometimes, he prefers the NFL grind. “Sometimes you miss just the bunch and dealing with your friends, but I have a new path that I have to start and dominate,” Williams said. sports.ed@ocolly.com

Cowboys react to Cade’s draft selection

Sam Hutchens OSU men’s basketball team eagerly awaited former teammate Cade Cunningham to be selected in the NBA draft.

Sam Hutchens Staff Reporter

Oklahoma State forward Kalib Boone watches the NBA draft every single year, but the 2021 draft was his favorite. “Oh (this draft is) number one because Cade (Cunningham)

is my dog,” Boone said. “I’ve never played with a number one overall draft pick, so seeing one of my former teammates be the number one pick, nobody can top that.” Former OSU point guard and No. 1 high school basketball player in the nation, Cade Cunningham, was selected Thursday night with the first pick of the 2021 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons. His college teammates, who couldn’t be happier for Cunningham, erupting in celebration at a watch party in Stillwater at Eskimo Joes. “I’m so happy for him,” OSU junior guard Avery Anderson said, “Because when you see a dude put

in work every day day and night you just want to see him do great and I know that’s what he’s going to be. He’s going to be great.” It wasn’t just Cunningham’s playing ability that had people talking. He wore a black suit and pants and even threw on a pair of sunglasses as he walked out onto the draft stage. “(Cunningham’s wardrobe was) very tough. I loved the chain he had on, the watch, everything was tough. The shades (were) tough at the end,” Anderson said. For the Cowboys who played with Cunningham, He was no ordinary number one overall NBA

draft pick. To them, Cunningham isn’t just another fresh multimillionaire rising NBA star, he is just Cade. “In high school, when you watch highlight tapes and everything, you just see like good,” Boone said. “But when you play with that person you get to see the good, the bad and the ugly. Playing with him for a year and hearing that from high school he was going to be the number one pick I was like, ‘they’re not wrong.’”
