The United States is not in a recession: Here's why While President Joe Biden agrees we are not in a recession, it is not up to him at all. The Business Cycle Dating Committee makes the decision as to whether or not the U.S. is in a recession.
Teyte Holcomb News Editor The term recession has been loosely thrown around recently, but what actually does that mean? Is the U.S. in a recession currently, and if so what does that mean for the citizens of the country? First, the U.S. is not currently in a recession, but that doesn’t technically mean we aren’t in one for future researchers. The decision to declare
if we are in a recession isn’t up to the citizens, or the president, or congress. Rather it is up to a group of eight un-elected people. These eight people are expert economists who have a specialization in macroeconomics and business cycle research. These individuals also must be over 60 years old and be associated with a prestigious university. Formally created in 1978, the Business Cycle Dating Committee aims to group all eight economists together to discuss the economic state of the country. All eight individuals are hand selected by the President of the National Bureau of Economic Research, James Poterba.
The committee measures “peaks and troughs” in the economy, and when a recession is declared, it is widely accepted by members of the U.S. and U.S. government officials. This committee doesn’t determine if we are in a recession in real time, rather they often make the declaration of a recession retroactively. Meaning the U.S. could be in a recession today, but it has not been recognized yet. While these committee members declare a recession, they won’t tell you how they make the decision. The committee never speaks directly to the public, and no explanation of the declaration is published to the public. While the United States
is not officially in a recession, many individuals already feel like it has happened. Many U.S. citizens have reportedly slowed spending habits and have begun saving more money than normal. All of this has led to the economy starting to slow down little by little, resulting in the national average of gas prices down 86 cents from June. While the economy slowing down is a sign of a recession, so is unemployment rates. The Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell explained that unemployment rates are at a record low in the past 50 years, which does not represent a recession. “This is a very strong labor market,” Powell said. “[A recession] just isn’t consistent
with the 2.7 million people hired in the first half of the year. It doesn’t make sense the economy would be in recession with this type of thing happening.” While this could all change in a week, the U.S. is officially not in a recession. As gas prices continue to fall and the economy slows down even more, it is up to the Business Cycle Dating Committee to determine if we are in an economic recession.

Ranking the Big 12 mascots WVU Mountaineer selected first Peyton Little Staff Reporter There are certain things at games that just bring the entire experience together. The pregame tailgates, iconic marching band fight songs and the roar of the crowd after unbelievable plays. However, if there is one aspect to wrap up the college football experience into one package, it is the mascots. Mascots help build a brand for a school as well as get the crowd fired up. With no two mascots looking exactly the same, here are the best and the worst of the Big 12 mascots. No. 10 Willie the Wildcat- Kansas State Kansas State has the groundwork for a great mascot with the Wildcats. However, there is just something that is off about Willie the Wildcat. The main issue here is the uncanny mix between a man and a wildcat. It looks like a completely normal Kansas State football player until the head, which is a mascot head of a wildcat. If Kansas State would have taken the approach of buying all the way into the wildcat, Willie may have been higher on this list.
No. 9 Bruiser the BearBaylor A bear is a fairly common mascot seen throughout the sports landscape, and this works as a disadvantage for Baylor’s Bruiser the Bear. Bruiser, while an inoffensive mascot in his own right, can seem a bit generic compared to the other mascots seen throughout the conference. No. 8 Cy the CardinalIowa State On paper, Cy the Cardinal is a great mascot. With a big smile and bright colors, he fits the bill for a mascot perfectly. However, Iowa State is known as the Cyclones, and as it is seen, Cy is not a cyclone. A cardinal was chosen to represent Iowa State’s color scheme and Cy is a play on words with cyclone. While it may be hard to develop a mascot of a cyclone, a cardinal has seemingly nothing to do with Iowa State University as a whole. A good mascot, yet it is in a weird predicament. No. 7 Boomer and Sooner- Oklahoma Oklahoma’s mascots Boomer and Sooner get the job done as far as mascots go. The horse duo has gone through a few revisions over the years, but ultimately, they serve their purpose well for Oklahoma athletics. What sets these horses back a bit behind the rest of the Big 12 mascots is that Oklahoma has many other beloved
traditions, such as the Sooner Schooner, that stick out a bit more when it comes to OU. No. 6 Raider Red- Texas Tech By far the most cartoony of the bunch, Raider Red is the beloved mascot for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. With a big red mustache, a felt pistol, and a black mask, Raider Red is the perfect representation of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. While other traditions like the Masked Rider could be seen as more iconic, Raider Red holds his place as an iconic piece of Texas Tech. No. 5 Big Jay- Kansas Known more for his appearances in basketball than in football, Big Jay is one of the most unique mascots the Big 12 has to offer. The word Jayhawk, coined in the late 1840s during the state of Kansas settlement, gets its name by combining two real birds, the blue jay and the sparrow hawk. The Jayhawk is entirely original to Kansas, meaning there is not a mascot out there quite like Big Jay. With his color scheme of blue and red, his big eyes, and large beak, he stands as a staple of college basketball and KU.
No. 4 SuperFrog- TCU The SuperFrog is one of the most unique mascots in the country, let alone in the Big 12. When wearing the TCU football gear, the SuperFrog’s muscles and spikes all across his body make him a bit intimidating when looking across at the other Big 12 mascots. While it may be odd compared to standard mascots out there, the TCU SuperFrog is an elite mascot that gets those TCU fans chanting “Riff, Ram, Bah, Zoo.” No. 3 Pistol Pete- Oklahoma State Oklahoma State’s Pistol Pete is synonymous with the university and the town of Stillwater itself. Based off a man named Frank Eaton, Pistol Pete has been the Pokes go to hype man since 1958. Pistol Pete can be found making an appearance in nearly every aspect of Oklahoma State, whether that be academic or athletic. He is a key piece to the branding of Oklahoma State, and his big hat and mustache make it easy to see why. No. 2 Hook ‘Em- Texas Texas mascot Hook ‘Em is a great example of simple
done right. With a big smile, cowboy hat, and a unique mascot in a longhorn, Hook ‘Em has all the ingredients needed to make an elite mascot. Known for his killer dance moves, Hook ‘Em is a legend in Austin alongside Bevo. No. 1 The MountaineerWest Virginia First place goes to one of the wildest mascots in the country, the West Virginia Mountaineer. Armed with a coonskin cap, loads of leather with fringe, and a hand rifle, the West Virginia Mountaineer is just a fun tradition within West Virginia. What makes this mascot even more significant is the legacy aspect of it, as when a Mountaineer is done serving as a mascot, a new person is appointed through the passing of the rifle ceremony. In fact, the current Mountaineer, Mary Roush, is only the third woman to ever serve as the Mountaineer. As an outstanding mascot with rich history, the Mountaineer is the best mascot in the Big 12.

Federal Communication Commission shortens suicide hotline number Mallory Pool Staff Reporter
call 1-800-273-8255.” Chatterjee says this new number is essential for mental illness and hopes that this will change the way people have received care in the past. “So right now, there just aren’t many options for people experiencing a mental health crisis,” Chatterjee said. “A growing number of people are using the 10-digit Suicide Prevention Lifeline, but the vast majority really just call 911 and end up in an ER waiting for hours in these frenetic ERs, and sometimes even days, to get care.” The FCC and mental health advocates are hopeful that when the system becomes fully functional across the country, the rate of suicide will go down and crises related to mental health will be treated properly. They also exaggerate that not all states have a functioning 988 number yet, especially those with 988 area codes and seven-digit dialing. “As part of the two-year nationwide transition to 988, more than 80 area codes had to shift to 10-digit dialing,” the FCC said. “To ensure that calls to 988 reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, all covered providers were required to implement 10-digit dialing in areas that both use seven-digit dialing and use 988 as the first three numbers in seven-digit phone numbers. If consumers accidently dial 988 as part of a local call, they must hang up and dial again using the area code and the seven-digit number.” For more information regarding the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, please visit fcc. gov or 988lifeline.org, and if your state does not have the number live yet, help can still be reached at 1-800-273-8255 indefinitely.
The Federal Communications Commission has created a new three-digit dialing code that will connect callers to the nationwide suicide prevention hotline for suicide and mental health awareness crises. The FCC hopes with this new, shorter number, people who need access to mental health professionals or who are in crisis situations remember the number better. Just as a person dials 911 for emergencies, people who need access to mental health and suicide crises care can call 988. “There are urgent mental health realities driving the need for crisis service transformation across our country,” the FCC said. “In 2020 alone, the U.S. had one death by suicide about every 11 minutes—and for people aged 10-34 years, suicide is a leading cause of death.” The old 11-digit number made it hard to remember in emergency situations. The hope with shortening this number is that people will have better access to care, and the suicide rate will go down. National Public Radio’s health correspondent Rhitu Chatterjee is concerned that states aren’t fully prepared for the change. “But only four states have passed legislation to fund 988 and associated services, and just about half have a plan for when the line goes live,” Chatterjee told NPR. “That said, mental health advocates say this new number launch is a historic event. It’s just going to take a while to have the system up and fully functional. And remember, until 988 launch on Saturday, anyone in crisis can news.ed@ocolly.com

Pinpointed potential

Sophomore wide receiver John Paul Richardson said he expects a lot from the position group entering the 2022 season.
Richardson, other sophomore receivers, poised for breakout season
Daniel Allen Staff Reporter As Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy stood in front of the Sherman E. Smith Training Center, there was one specific topic of emphasis. A better situation for not just his offense as a whole, but the receiving core in particular. “Anybody here that followed us last year (knows that) it was really scary,” Gundy said. Heading into the 2022 season, the Cowboys have a bevy of uncertainties surround-
ing the wide receiving core. Outside of sophomore Brennan Presley, veteran Tay Martin and a banged up Braydon Johnson, OSU was inexperienced when it came to its wide receivers. Then came the injuries. “We were playing up through the first three or four games where we couldn’t do much on offense,” Gundy said. “We were playing true freshmen at wide receiver, and former high school players. They were just out there getting lined up (trying to) survive. That’s not really a productive situation on offense, for any team.” A profuse amount of them struck the Cowboys through the first three games of the season, allowing true freshmen such as Jaden Bray, Blaine and Bryson Green, and John Paul Rich-
ardson to cement themselves within the roster early on in the season. Guys like Richardson wholeheartedly believe the early experience has shaped this year’s receiving core into a more well-rounded group than last year’s. “We had a lot of young guys out on the field last year,” Richardson said. “Honestly, I think that (did) nothing but help us this year. Experience is very important at this level, and I think I expect a big year from our guys. I mean (we’ve been) busting our tails and we’re ready to roll.” It shouldn’t have happened, but it did. Because it happened, the newcomers were able to garner enough live, quality reps to create momentum for a roaring finish to their
first year campaigns. Big play makers such as Presley and Martin were heavily utilized last season due to the lack of depth within the position early on as well as the overall inexperience within the core. However, the freshmen quickly inserted themselves and provided a spark to what was a sluggish offense during the early weeks of the 2021 season. Those early heroics from the youngsters led to key plays from those same players in a much-needed nonconference win against Boise State, an imperative Bedlam victory and a statement New Year’s Six victory against Notre Dame. With an experienced and healthy Johnson along with Presley back, the return of such a young and experienced
group of wide receivers for the Cowboys should bolster OSU to a successful season offensively. Last season showed the potential of the young wide receivers, and Richardson and the other returning sophomore receivers all believe this year’s group is poised to garner eyecatching numbers. “I think we’ll all get in there and I can guarantee (we’ll) all make our plays,” Richardson said. “We got (Brennan Presley) coming back. I can’t say enough about him. The (Green) twins, (Jaden) Bray, I mean you know we got some dudes. I’m really excited to see how we’ll do.”

Cooking for college students
Breakfast, lunch and dinner done easy Peyton Little Staff Reporter What is easier, preparing a meal in an apartment or dorm after a long day of classes or going and grabbing food on campus or around Stillwater? Obviously, picking up food from fast food places might seem much easier than preparing and cooking food, but that does not always have to be the case. Cooking food can be simple and fun, and it just might taste even better than that fast food. Here are a few recipes provided by students that will help you stay out of the drive through. Breakfast There is a reason it is called the most important meal of the day. Breakfast helps provide energy throughout the day, and sometimes it can be the remedy needed for morning classes or exams. These do not have to be difficult meals, just something that gets the day started. Breakfast takes very little prep work, yet it yields fantastic results. After those morning classes, a great lunch can be a good pickme-up going into the rest of the schedule. The important thing about lunch is that it needs to be quick, easy and delicious.
